treading delicately here because there is much fun and whimsy to be had, plus i don't want to speak for anybody. but as this pherson of the year tourney proceeds, can we all just be extra cautious and gentle and supportive and mindful of the fact that there are humans behind the blogs, and those humans didn't ask to be a part of this and now just have to be cool about it? and they're all so smart and funny and creative and essential to this space! so idk yeah let's just be. thoughtful? there are no winners or losers on phannie tumblr we're all just doing our thing here building something weird and wonderful and fun together <3

localization moment... this part made me curious about what the original was so i looked it up and:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in japanese, wocky says ペテン師 (petenshi) at first, which means swindler/imposter (hilarious because that's exactly what alita is) and then "corrects" himself and says 堕天使 (datenshi, fallen angel), to which trucy responds "i don't think you need the 'pe' or the 'da'." (just "tenshi" meaning angel)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in korean, wocky initially says 전사 (jeon-sa, warrior) and then says 타락천사 (tarak cheon-sa, fallen angel) to which trucy says "one of those is missing an extra line (referring to the difference between ㅈ and ㅊ) and the other has an unnecessary adjective attached." (just "cheon-sa" meaning angel)
i think it's interesting to see which parts of the original pun each localization latched onto!

The funny thing about rhysand is that he's one the characters that are the archetype codifiers for the "dark, tortured and brooding shadow daddy love interest" that fills paranormal/dark romance/romantasy books 2010s onward.
But he fails to hold up the foundation that was set by simultaneously being less memorable than other contemporaries of same trope (see the darkling, edward cullen) and far more toothless than his (copy paste) successors.
He's generic.

In Defense of the Phandom (Mostly): Dan, Phil, and Our Parasocial Social Club
Tumblr media
Refer to my previous pinned post for an explanation of and outline for this project. Now that I'm done going through my old reblogs (god, it took forever), it's time to actually research and write this script! This will be my pinned post for the foreseeable future, so you can come back to it by clicking on my blog for the current status of this part of the process. (Note from February 15 - everything is on hold for now while I wrap up my dissertation!)
Script word count: 2,350 | Last updated: January 9, 2025

More details below the cut!
Research → peer reviewed or published literature:
I read a few things (like Haidt's The Anxious Generation) while I was in the process of searching academic databases, but most of the 403 works I have saved to Zotero for this are currently unread. They're not all the same length or will take the same amount of time to read, so the completion proportion is just getting updated based on vibes. I'm absolutely not referencing all 403 of these things in the script - I just cast a wide net for materials I thought might be relevant. Furthermore, there are some things I didn't save that I know I'll be referencing, like some of the Pew Research Center's work in the early to mid 2010s on teenagers and technology, or the journalistic coverage of what got my school district in huge trouble in 2011.
Research → Social media and forum archives:
The collection of posts, art, and fic (other than mine) to reference in the video. For regular posts and art, especially by people who have long since abandoned their accounts or whose content went pretty viral, I feel comfortable just showing things in the video with credit as examples. For fic, I intend to just discuss trends more broadly and vaguely since, as a fic writer myself, I know we tend to get more flack and less acclaim for our work and therefore prefer to stay out of the spotlight. Let me know if you think I should handle this differently - the academic impulse is to credit sources and reproducible searches for every single thing you do, but that's definitely not best practice for phandom history since we have so much "forbidden" lore. I'll also be reading the IDB forum front-to-back, listening to things like the phandom podcast, reading the current generation of phanzines, and looking at recent (and historical, if anyone has any) surveys done of phannies within the community. I'm assuming those folks would appreciate credit and/or a shoutout.
Research → The great rewatch:
Rewatching everything DNP-related so I can talk about it from more recent memory (and read what's left of the original comments for DNP videos that are still up at their original locations). I know there's a playlist for this but I also know it's incomplete, so I have been doing some poking around myself and will probably continue to.
Research → Discussions with other phannies:
The first task is to sort that whole Zotero collection into more manageable sub-collections (on PSR on PSIs, on mental health, on YouTube platform history, etc), which is what I'm currently working on.
Writing → Introduction, background, and conclusion sections
See old pinned post for the outline. Will expand details here once research is mostly done (I plan to read and watch everything in the research section aside from talking to other phannies, then complete the script's rough draft, then talk to others on call, then integrate that with and finalize the script).
Writing → 2009-2013
See above.
Writing → 2014-2018
See above.
Writing → 2019-2025
See above.
Writing → Long tangents (fandom, RPF, and PSRs/PSIs)
See above. These tangents are kind of mini video essays in and olf themselves, so I may write them while I'm reading through my saved stuff in Zotero and before I rewatch all the DNP videos.

fun(?) fact Ive noticed on second playthrough is how the game really hammers in the symbolism of Polle and "the baby" thats the catalytic event of everything in the game, if you've somehow missed it:
Well first there's Jimmy's line about him "being sexually attracted to cartoon horses" to Anya' face (what a fucking piece of shit. we have no idea when "it" happened or when Anya found out she was pregnant for sure but the psych evals happened one week before the crash and there is no way this all happened within one week, which means "it" happened before the psych evals)
There's of course the weird running baby-horse hybrid in the womb in medical
There's the very first minutes of the game where after setting the course to crash the ship, Jimmy goes through hallways and hallways with increasing images of Polle (first the posters then the Polle statue that gets freaky at the end), and at the end of the game, you learn that he went to crash the ship after learning that Anya's pregnant
And finally, at the very end there's Polle talking to Jimmy and there is one line of Polle wondering if he should call Jimmy "Old Man"
And idk, maybe linking the two by having Polle both represent Pony Express as its mascot and the consequence of what Jimmy did to Anya as "the baby" is meant to show how Jimmy is afraid of the punishment he will recieve back on earth? And that's why he says to Polle "You're dead! And Pony Express too!" at the end, reassuring himself they can't get him for what he's done? Or maybe it's just meant to link both being let go from Pony Express and having consequences for raping Anya into one entity? And bringing those two things into one was the reason why he decided to end it all with crashing the ship? Idk food for thoughts

Been toying around with the idea of pronouns as a minor game mechanic in a social manipulation game. Where there aren't any relationship meters and you have to gauge NPC opinion of you based on pronoun use and other social cues. Then I imagined getting the notification "pronoun unlocked! you can now use the informal you" and started laughing

My initial impression of these two when they first appeared together on screen, with them being the same shade of ultra-light beige from head to toe and leaning into each other, was that either she was his ride or die gal pal or they're constantly in some sort of freaky psychosexual warfare that keeps them tethered to each other.
