I can’t believe it. We’re finally here. Round 3 starts tomorrow (2/1), with our first poll dropping at 8 am EST.

Some notes:

Round 3 will be our biggest round yet, and I have 227 polls scheduled. That’s almost a year’s worth of polls. It should be obvious that not every Order is going to make it to Round 4. So you’re going to need to be more choosy this round. Be honest. Come here with a plan. Do a bit of research. Know your favs. This next round is covering Animal Orders. If your favorite animal is a Great White Shark you need to know that it’s a Lamniform. So you should make sure you’re only voting fav in the Lamniformes poll and not fav in the other shark polls. You can still vote love or like in those polls; that’s what those options are there for. But this round is going to require a bit more focus if we want a diverse roundup next year! If you’re someone who votes favorite in every poll, try to pick just one or two favorites from each class we’re covering. I would actually love if we could have at least one representative from each class moving forward. (That being said, don’t be afraid to reflect it in your vote if the descriptions and propaganda have you discovering new favorites! I’m kinda hoping for that here too!)

I can not state enough that this tournament relies on numbers. If you want your fav to move forward you have to make sure people see it. Reblog, post propaganda, etc. If you don’t have a large following, reblog the poll anyway, add some GOOD propaganda onto it, and then chances are I’ll reblog it which increases the chances of it getting seen again. Get your friends involved. If you know someone that only blogs about squids, tag them! This tournament is all about PASSION.

I had some complaints last round about missing some polls. These polls are all pre-scheduled. They post once a day, at 8am EST, and they’re open for 7 days. If you click on the tag #/Animal Polls while within my blog, you can see every poll in one place. I recommend doing that every so often so you don’t miss any of them! You can also turn on notifications or follow the blog via rss (but that also means your gonna be seeing asks, extra propaganda, and poll results as well.) On top of that, I will post a schedule of every single poll at the bottom of this post, under the read more. If there are polls you absolutely do not want to miss, put them in your calendar!

That being said, there is ONE BIG CHANGE this round. I am removing the hate option. I put the dislike and hate options there as a fun little mechanic to strategize and steal points from other people but uh… I’m ngl, it’s starting to Hurt My Feelings. Whoopsie. The dislike option will remain but I feel like hate is a bit too strong of an option to include. The fact that dislike, neutral, and simply not voting already detract points from the total seems like enough. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still, as always, this is just a silly Tumblr tournament that doesn’t really matter in the long run. Nothing’s going to happen to the animals that make it to the next round and nothing’s going to happen to the animals that don’t, we’re just trying to figure out the most popular animal on Tumblr. If your favorite doesn’t make it, that’s okay! If anything, that just makes it, and you, all the more unique! And if it does? Welcome! You’ve found your people!

It's almost 2025 y'all!

I'm stealing this idea from Michelle and Emily, except instead of just picking one, I'm going to share seven sentence snippets from all of my fics from this year! Also, at the end I'm going to share a snippet of a WIP that I am hoping to finally get the ball rolling on in the new year.

our love will guide us home

The sights and sounds surrounding him begin to still, the cruel, meaningless world slowing to an agonizing stop. All Carlos feels is darkness. A terrible sickness consuming him from the inside out as he resigns himself to the inevitable. TK is going to die, and a part of Carlos is dying with him. Everything feels slow, solidified. Inching closer towards the end until all that is left is a good man who died a hero, and a broken man who mourned the loss of a love. His first real love. And perhaps, his last.

until the end of time

It's a look that makes him feel complete. Carlos is the final puzzle piece in his life, making him whole in every way. They were made for each other, no evidence of that greater than the way TK feels when he looks into his eyes. Trusted. Wanted. Loved. He sinks into Carlos slowly, joining their bodies and their hearts, watching fireworks erupt in his face, going inch by inch until he's fully buried inside of him and the rest of the world ceases to exist.

leave your love in the lamplight

Every time they have to say goodbye, they follow it with a “see you soon” spoken in kisses pressed to their rings. It's a reminder. It's a promise to always do everything they can to make it back home. Carlos knows he will keep that promise. No matter where this job takes him, no matter where his investigation into his father's death leads – he will always, always, come home to TK. He makes that promise with every kiss, and now he seals it into place with the last words he speaks before TK's alarm comes alive, telling him that it’s time to leave for work. “I love you too, husband.”

tonight your tears will fall from the sky

He knows that if TK is truly about to die, and if that's what's going to kill him, it's going to be a painful, grueling death. “TK…” he breathes. “How long?” “We covered the door with our turnouts but it's not going to work for much longer. Maybe a few minutes.” A few minutes. Nearly thirty years, a whole lifetime ahead of him – and all it takes is a few minutes to put an end to it all.

winds are shifting for our souls

He can hold TK, and he can imagine a world where he'd never have to let him go again. “Come here,” he whispers. “I've got you, baby.” A sob rips out of him and startles Carlos. It comes with the weight of a dam break. TK's cracks crumble into sand as he buries his face deeper into Carlos' shoulder, and his resolve vanishes entirely once he's safely tucked away. Hardened horror falls into the hands that cradle his face, keeping him steady as he cries.

with broken wings we fly

“She told me how much you loved watching him play when you were little.” Hesitant hands graze the newly polished wood. Carlos is gentle, as if even the slightest pressure from his fingers would cause the guitar to remember its age and crumble into a million pieces. Or as if it were a ghost. “I didn't even know she still had this,” he whispers. TK smiles fondly, placing his hand next to where Carlos’ rests against the rosewood. He lets out a soft sound and traces a circle around the blue of his ring.

and the silence sets me free

When TK paced the kitchen after restless nights and early-morning AA meetings, Carlos was there. When he confided to the person over his phone instead of the man in his bed, Carlos made sure to be there when he was done so he could kiss him goodnight again. When TK’s grief unfurled and painted his eyes in tears, tears that were illuminated by the light of the candles he lit in honor of his mother, Carlos was there. Waiting and listening, squeezing his arm, allowing the silence to subside naturally and make way for the heavy conversations that finally came on the final night. Bittersweet sorrow swelled up in a wave that would eventually seep into the air along with the smoky remnants of the flames. Every little step feels like another immeasurable goodbye. “It won't get easier if you never go, Carlos.”

Now for my currently untitled murder mystery au.....I really hope to be able to share this with you guys in 2025, but I make zero promises.

Carlos Reyes was already somewhat of a legend before his name ever made its way into the top scores on the detective's exam. As a patrol officer, he'd worked several cases off the books, which often resulted in reckless decisions, many of which nearly got him killed or fired. Detailed reports of how he chased down a kidnapper while off duty and broke into the house of a serial killer without backup didn't exactly leave TK with a lot of confidence. Sure, he's damn good at what he does. TK just can't help but wonder if the cost will eventually catch up with him. “I'm looking forward to working together,” Carlos says, offering a handshake that TK accepts hesitantly. Behind his forced smile, there's a voice that says no, he absolutely is not looking forward to working with him. At least the feeling is mutual.

2024 Fic Roundup

Thank you so much for the tag @emyn-arnens! I love a good stats summary, but sticking the rest of this under the cut for those who prefer not to think about the numbers.

Total Words Published at end of year: AO3 says 58,099, not counting the seven parts of tfs I haven't crossposted from tumblr yet (which probably gets me up to around 75k-ish).

Fandoms: just the Silmarillion this year!

Most kudos: Notes on the Care of the Tormented, ed. Elrond Half-elven (T, Maedhros & Maglor, 4k)

Most hits: the cleaving (G, Maedhros & Maglor, 8k)

Most comments: the cleaving again

New Things I Tried: I made much more in-depth attempts at OC-centric fic, which turned out so much more fun than I expected! I got a bit more detailed with the smut, and definitely branched out a little with the characters I wrote.

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: the fairest stars, even though my posting speed slowed way down from last year. swan song (G, Finarfin/Eärwen, Elwing and OCs, 18k) also ended up rather consuming my summer.

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: I opened the document that became kept you like an oath (G, russingon, 1k) at midnight and clicked "post" on AO3 at 2am. This was perhaps not the healthiest thing I could have been doing with my night, but it was the most fun.

Favourite Thing I Wrote: I wouldn't have listed it at the time, but the more I think about it the prouder I am of before the black gale (E, OFC x OFC, 8k). It was such a new venture for me, but I think it’s some of my best prose and distils my thoughts (about violence, and corruption, and when exactly a person – or a people – is past saving) better than almost anything I’ve written. Plus it put me in all my Númenor feels ❤️

Favourite Things I Read:

A very inexhaustive list, but here are some standouts from my 2024 AO3 bookmarks!

In Memory to Dwell by @eilinelsghost (G, Finarfin & Finrod, 6k): such a moving and tender exploration of Finrod’s post-reembodiment journey, with absolutely beautiful prose as always from Frankie.

Right-ho, Edrahil! by @actual-bill-potts (G, Finrod & Edrahil, 4k): “Finrod tries to steal Lobelia Sackville-Baggins’ spoons” is an incredible concept to begin with, and this fic is (perhaps unsurprisingly) the funniest thing I read all year.

A Tale That Wasn’t Right by @zealouswerewolfcollector (M, russingon, 2k): a fantastic use of epistolary format, and such a fraught and complicated YoT-russingon dynamic.

Two Half-Kings and a Full Lake Between by @melestasflight and @polutrope (T, Fingolfin & Maglor, 12k): yesss messy Finwean drama my BELOVED. This is such a fascinating and in-depth view of the period immediately after Fingolfin’s host arrived in Beleriand, I love it.

naught green upon the oak series by @welcomingdisaster (E, Maedhros/Maglor, 38k): goddd this series drives me INSANE it’s just such an awful preventable and yet inevitable tragedy and yet they LOVE each other so and aahh go and read it I’m not coherent.

You can also browse our lengthy lost fic masterlist, where we have compiled every request we have been unable to find over the past few years. We're always hoping someone will recognize a fic so we can let the asker know what it was!

1. It was on ao3, 8th year, after the war, very often the writing shifted between draco and harry's POV. Draco and theo were dating (but they breakup in the end so drarry gets together), it's also a bottom draco fic but I can't remember any specific sex scenes. Theo peer pressures draco to do pills-like drugs and latter ron mentions to harry that he saw theo and draco staring at ron weird and laughing in the hallways at night. Their relationship is toxic but I don't remember much about it, draco and harry slowly starts to become friends, it's more or less at the same rhythm as Theo and draco relationship crumbles. I remember there was a point were theo has sex with some other guy to get more drugs and draco gets upset because he was cheating but then theo says that the other guy raped him and draco is not supposed to tell anyone because he could get in trouble and harry is secretly listening to the most part of the discussion and in his head he starts to question why would nott get in trouble if he was the victim but ultimately doesn't do/say anything about it. Theo gets addicted to those drugs but I can't remember if draco get as well or not. I can't recall if someone harasses draco for being a ex death eater but the students definitely look at him, and other slytherins, differently and most of them get excluded from the rest of the school despite the majority being innocent or too young to have done anything

2. harry and draco I think were already together. But Hermione liked draco and tried to steal him from harry and either used a love potion or gave him a cookie which made him fall in love with her. Some maybe key points I remember are: Harry was thinking and out of space not listening to ron and hermione fighting, when they finally got his attention ron told him about how Hermione thought it was ok for her to flirt with draco even in front of harry. Then at some point draco came up to the three and as he left hermione kisses him on the cheek in front of harry. I read the story on Wattpad in like 2020/2021 and Im pretty sure it had chapters.

3. harry has an owl service or some delivery food service like ubereats, postmates, deliveroo and once he learned who the order was for, Harry was going to give Draco Malfoy a piece of his mind for such a request for late delivery. “ugh pure bloods and their wealth”. then unexpectedly the wards let Harry in, and then he was face to face with Draco. now I will be honest, the role of Harry and Draco could be reversed, but I don’t think so? It may feature a young Scorpius Malfoy or Teddy Lupin. rating: explicit / mature? last remember reading it on ao3. One shot, completed. Maybe apart of Harry/Draco Owlpost Fest? tags: post-war, not canon compliant?, owl, owlpost, delivery, malfoy manor, grimmauld place, order, baked goods, food service. harry and draco are like in their 20s-30s. one chapter: about 10K words

4. i’m pretty sure in this fic harry is this well known baker/pastry chef in the wizarding world, and him and draco become friends and soon start dating. draco falls in love with harry’s sweet desserts which harry claims has a “special ingredient” which he won’t tell draco until the end. that’s when they meet in harry’s pantry/bakeshop and draco soon learns harry methods to creating such desserts, especially when harry uses his magic literally and metaphorically to create a huge order for a Ministry event which make draco falls deeper for him and his special filling especially when they go to the eat and eat his home made desserts. rating: explicit / nc-17. last I remember reading it on ao3. May be apart of a Drarry fest including: H/D Erised or Food Fair or Owlpost. From 2020-present maybe? tags: post war, not canon compliant, bakery, baker, pastry chef harry, coffee shop, coffee, post hogwarts/ harry potter epilogue what epilogue, frosting, icing, innuendos, pwp, cake, batter word count, filling, cream, crème, food, euphemisms. harry and draco are like in their 20s-30s. one chapter: 10K-20K words

5. fic I read a couple months ago. I found that fic at AO3, it's a multiple chapter (I don't remember the exact number of chapters). Main couple is Drarry. The fic is not magical au, I think Harry is a university student(?) and such an extrovert slight flirty person, but he only has Hermione as his friend. Btw, in that fic, Hermione is having an affair with Remus (their professor). Harry is crushing over Draco (Draco's not a university student), he's often goes to the campus to pick up Astoria, his girlfriend at that time. One day, Astoria invite Harry to her house in order to spice up her bed activity with Draco. At first, Draco is so shocked and offended(?) with Harry's presence (Draco has a idk what to call it, i guess internalized homophobic(??) caused by his father action). But then, slowly, Draco become more intrigued to Harry. Harry also realized that Draco is not the same as what Draco show in the outside, Harry knows that Draco hide his dom side(?) to look so calm, collected, chill, and so on). I think it's save to say that there are some infidelity at that fic but at the end Draco ends his relationship with Astoria first before officially start a new one with Harry. Oh, and Astoria is kind of regret her choice introducing Harry to Draco because she kind of sad to lose Draco, but no hard feeling tho.

6. the first few chapters are poems. Draco was fleeing to the muggle world or something and Harry captured him. Harry is also an Alpha and he mated with Draco forcefully, I think in this world if one of them dies then the one mated with you can be dead too. Thank you so much, it’s on AO3 but I can’t find it.

7. looking for a fic where Draco works as a mailman or something and he plays chess with one of the elderly lady in a wizarding nursing home. The lady also gives him tips but it embarrasses him but he accepts out of necessity. Harry is an auror and a newly turned werewolf and he cannot control himself around Draco like I remember that he keeps sniffing him while they were near an elevator. I've reread this fic but I can't seem to remember the title!

9. fic on ao3, it was about Draco being like a sex slave for the deatheaters, and he was held up in chains and perceiving a lot less of his surroundings due to him trying to not feel anything. The plot of the war was different, and Harry and Ron were using polyjuice to get inside the manor, then they found Draco and were surprised, but Ron did like a gesture that he would also r4pe Draco (like unzipping his pants or something) and Harry stopped him, I think Harry said to Draco that he was gonna try to set him free when they could and Draco stayed there while watching them go. I'm not sure about that last part, and I do not remember much more or maybe even he wasn't free at all at the end

10. what I remember is that Draco was held in a room at Order headquarters, I remember several members tried to visit him for questioning, including Harry. But Draco didn't reveal anything at all. Then there is a scene where Harry comes in and tells him that Lucius Malfoy is dead, Harry shows the ring as proof that he is not mistaken

11. I could be mixing up two fics. I'm pretty sure it was on AO3. It was a 4th year AU, where I believe Harry and Draco were already dating when the Tournament happened. One scene that I remember clearly is that when Harry has to do that wand thing for the tournament, his wand just doesn't want to be used by Ollivander, so it hits Ollivander in the head. Also I think that Harry and the other champions get along pretty well and ARE working together. So much so that I think that they all agree that they just don't really wanna be a part of the tournament and then they train together and everything. And if I'm not mistaken, for the second task they all decide to use a boat? To get to the Merfolk village and then just dive and get their hostage. And for the third task they were just planning on get inside the maze and do a picnic?

4. What was your favorite thing you wrote?

Pink Pony Club

Any time Bodhi has to face the memories of his small hometown, Aretia, Tennessee, it’s painful. But after moving LA just over a year ago, he’s found a new home: at the Pink Pony Club. 5. What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?

The Shadow Stalker. I did not have a serial killer AU with ethical non-monogamy, dirty bathroom face fucking, and dark romance elements on my Bingo card for this year.

Honorable mention to: Shut Up and Fly With Me. This one might not seem experimental, but it's the only thing I've ever written in first person in my entire life.

After three long years apart, Garrick and Xaden are finally reunited at Basgaith. Only, instead of the romantic reunion Garrick expected, Xaden is holding back, afraid to take their relationship public for whole host of stupid reasons that start and end with Alic Tauri.

6. Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?

Uhh. I wrote a fic about Xaden watching his cousin have sex on dragonback...and surprisingly the people loved it.

I want to say Paradise by the Dashboard Light...but apparently I wrote it last year. Fuck it. It's my post and I'm saying it anyway.

It was long ago and it was far away and it was so much better than it is today. A Tharion/RQD retelling taking place in 1970's hybrid Lunation/Real-World AU based on the music of Meatloaf.

8. Who is an artist that inspired you?

@sholdthebus is one of the sweetest people around and I love all their art. Also @korrinamoe has some of the best Sloane/Aaric art around there and also some awesome are for Crowns of Nyaxia. Of course @silverlude and @xenafay too!

9. Who is an author that inspired you?

@iftheshoef1tz. I cannot read anything that Fitz writes without getting jealous of her talent. She makes writing seem effortless and everything she writes is moving and emotional and sexy.

I also have to call out @hoeelliexx for inspiring a Fourth Wing/AFTG crossover that I've been plotting out.

@born-to-riot and @acourtofladydeath for keeping me engaged with the Azris fandom even as my mind wanders.

And, of course, @suebswrites and @essjaywrites who keep me a functioning writer when all I want to do is quit. Add in @alexandia03 and @greeneyedwildthing who help host the @rq-gift-exchange!

10. Who is a new author you discovered?

This makes me feel like a mother playing favorites. @ubiquitouslyme, @siobhanbooks and @copperfirebird are some of the many talented writers I met this year. (You all better tag the rest of the crew!)

Pick and choose your ideas carefully. There are a ton of things I want to write, but if I get distracted by the plot bunnies, then I end up going several months without updating my main fic and it's hard to get back into it.

The post-holiday retail slump is in full swing. Rick and Morty still dominates store shelves, but new designs? Nope. Even Spencer's is stuck with last year's apparel. I did overhear a funny conversation when I walked in:

"This is malarkey, my friends! Why are people taking the tags and not the product?"

So people are stealing...tags? Not the actual items? I worked in retail, and I still don't understand the bizarre things that customers do.

Anyway, since I can't post a real-world merchandise roundup, I thought I'd highlight a different type of merchandise: fan-drawn posters, T-shirts and stickers. I did my best to weed out the AI and stolen art.

Highest kudos + Highest Hit One-Shot:

I didn't do a whole lot of one-shots this year, so for both of those it's 'fate is just a world for all the things we can't control', a story for One Piece where Robin is time looping the events at Water 7. this one was honestly really fun. It's the first time in months I'd gotten clocked by the inspiration bat and gone 'oh yeah writing is FUN.' i wrote a lot of it at work, when I worked 11 PM-7 AM. four in the morning fic on company time.

New Things I Tried:

the Usagi fic I wrote this year was a set of 10 drabbles making one story. i should do that again sometime, that was a lot of fun. cut me open, call me home involved a lot of writing in the style of old oral tradition fairytales, which was entirely new and harder than I expected it to be!

Fic I Spent The Most Time On:

hm. i think both in terms of hours and the fic that took the most months from start to finish, it would be Casey Jones and the Forty Thieves, the 1990s moviefic which I first put down words for in August 2023 and which got posted February 2024. wAIT NO Carlyfic, Winter Music, has a section in it that I wrote back in January 2023, on my phone at the Waltham commuter rail stop.

Fic I Spent The Least Time On: Ad Lib, which was a bit of a one-day endeavor.

Favourite Thing I Wrote: I really, really, really like how Winter Music turned out. I also liked competitive agoraphobia exposure therapy so much that I'm now working on a sort-of-sequel.

Favourite Thing(s) I Read: going to cheat a little and link my bookmarks, because I got into One Piece this year and ohhhhhhhhhh man is there some good stuff in there. special shoutout to two of my favorite urban fantasy fics from that corner of the internet: King Tide by carriecmoney, and A Crown of Flowers by HyperbolicReverie, which just finished. I also adored Unknown System, or, New Peoples by alatarmaia4 which is a Murderbot/Discworld crossover.

Writing Goals for 2025: [clenches fist] mushroomverse moviefic. I'm gonna get there. I'm gonna get the buildup. I'm gonna stick the landing. I also really want to finish the prompts I took back in 2023--I'll be making a list of those shortly so I can pin it and keep track. Oh, and I'm participating in the TruffyFest this year! I've got one thing in the works, and another prompt I have my eye on, so in a perfect world I'll finish those. I'd love to do another Big Bang or just another longfic in general, it's been ages, but that's more of a hope than a goal. as is finishing Passionate Pools. which is ON MY LIST.

New Works: Mostly One Piece. like I said I've got a sequel to the Heart Pirates on Zou fic in mind, which involves both spoilers and speculation for current manga stuff. I've got another couple fics in mind that may or may not be destined to be finished--Vivi stealing from the gods, Usopp playing Scheherazade in Wano. I have a list of what I'm doing for Mushroomverse each month until August, and I've got the Truffyfest works I can't talk about yet.

“it’s been ages since we were really honest” - a oneshot i wrote for the Netflix Originals Fic Exchange for dreamkist on ao3! it was my first time doing a fic exchange and i’m really glad i took that leap and did something like it, because it was a challenge in a fun way, and i really like how it turned out. it’s about gob and tony’s first times as a couple (not just their First Time because we all know about that), and i’m proud of it.

“I Want to Break Free” - my biggest solo project to date, my gob bluth figure skater AU. i’ve said so much about this fic and agonized about it and joked about it, and at the end of the day i am so proud of it, and i’m glad that i wrote it.

“The Pianist and the Magician” - birthday fic for @quinnmorgendorffer, pianist!gob meets struggling magician!tony and they share a night together (not smutty despite the description lol). i’m soooo proud of this one, my goal was to make it very atmospheric, almost movie-like, and i think i achieved that, in a sense.

“Everything He Needs” - my very first reddie fic, written shortly after seeing chapter 2 and having my heart ripped out, lmao. it’s a stereotypical fix-it where richie stays with eddie in the hospital as he recovers. i do really like how it turned out, though.

“New York’s Hottest Talk Show Guest: Richie Tozier” - this is a crossover fic with SNL, but i’m putting it here because richie and eddie are the main focus. basically, richie goes on late night with seth meyers, brings eddie along, and they meet seth and his husband, stefon as well. it’s very silly and self indulgent, but was inspired by ADORABLE fanart which i adored.

“Want You in my Room” - richie and eddie have morning sex, nothing more, nothing less.

“who’s gonna drive you home tonight” - cowritten with my friend robin. eddie had a “fuck you mom!” phase once he got out of derry and that resulted in him getting a motorcycle and a few tattoos. he comes back to derry and him and richie meet. this is currently unfinished, but i hope we can finish it in 2020!

SNL:

“'cause living like this is risking all that i know, and if it kills me, that's how i wanna go” - seth meyers/stefon 5+1 times fic. i love how this turned out and all the love that it received was totally unexpected.

Favorite Fic: honestly not sure. i’m going to go with “‘cause living like this...” because it was probably the most fun to write, and i’m really glad that i stopped being too embarrassed to share all my sethon thoughts with others, because i got so many nice comments. “everything he needs” is probably a close runner up, though.

Hardest Fic: hoooooo....probably “i want to break free” because i’ve always been hesitant to do multichapters because i’ve abandoned them before, but i needed to finish that one (and i did!). also, even though i’m a huge figure skating fan, that fic required a lot of research on the scoring system and rules of the sport during the time that i set the fic in.

What was the best thing about 2019?: writing for new fandoms like IT and SNL!!!! holy shit, i did NOT expect to be completely consumed by the Clown Movie this year, but i definitely was, and now reddie is one of my favorite pairings i’ve ever been invested in. because of that, i read sooo much good reddie fic, i seriously cannot overstate how amazing the writers for reddie are.

What was the worst thing about 2019?: the writer’s block that went through this winter, ugh

Any last thoughts for 2019?: this was my best year for fic writing by far, and i’m so thankful for all the suppor i’ve received

Goals for 2020

Yuletide 2019 roundup

Pour one out for The Terror; it's passed 1000 fics on AO3 and so 2019 is probably the last year it'll be Yuletide-eligible. I contributed to this fact this year with two fics.

But meanwhile, I was gifted five, FIVE stories this year. Four of them are Untitled Goose Game fics. Clearly that game has touched a nerve. And one was an absolutely delightful and moving crossover between Iain M. Banks’s Culture novels ... and the Discworld.

Longer rec list to follow later (maybe; I say that every year and never remember to do a proper recs post, but this year I’m going to try to at least remember to bookmark my shit). Meantime, here’s my personal goodness.

Banks, Discworld - Terry Pratchett Tags: Cheradenine Zakalwe, random guest appearances, Crossover, Beware small wrinkly bald men, Yuletide Treat Summary: Floating around in the deep near-void of space, shaped like a disc balanced precariously atop four volumes of ship, was the GNU Man In The Funny Black Hat. Words: 3,498 My notes: Funny story! When I saw a request to beta a Culture/Discworld crossover pop up on the YT Discord, I thought “oh hey, I am uniquely qualified to do this beta!” So I volunteered, but forgot to mention my AO3 name, and, well, long story short, I ended up beta’ing my own gift. (“Wow, it’s almost like this was written for ... me ... oh.”) It’s mildly mortifying for everyone involved but also funny, and honestly with a story this good, I can’t even be mad. I never would have thought to mix these two universes, but it’s done very well, and also is a fine tribute to Banks and Pratchett. (N.B. There is some suicidal ideation involved, but it’s well within the Banks canon range.)

Words: 2,178 Director’s commentary: When I got my assignment, the first section basically wrote itself within an hour (and is, I confess, inspired by/ripped off from a thing MFK Fisher wrote about shrimp and corpses). The rest took ... longer. But it did all fall together eventually, and I’m actually very pleased with how it turned out, particularly with the ending.

Words: 1,854 Director’s commentary: The recipient had a prompt involving future archaeologists within the universe of the show finding relics from the expedition. I’ve been fascinated with that sort of thing all my life (the issue of National Geographic about the dig at Herculaneum with the famous Ring Lady on the cover made a huge impression when I was a kid) and so that prompt just sent me running at speed. It was originally going to be another one of my fake-academic articles, but that fell apart fast (the only remainder is the last “Now” section), and instead I went with the two-timeline, parallel-story structure that you see now.

I did this last year and it was nice to do some self reflection and make some goals for 2019. I encourage all my writer friends to do this! No tagging necessary, just tell each other to do it. <3

Fics Posted (Gen): 6

Space Birthday (9,595 words): Hunk can feel it in his bones; it’s his birthday. He wants to have a nice one... and does... after accidentally raiding a Galra outpost with Lance and Pidge.

Pilot (4,340): Shiro finds himself in a different reality post s2. Here, the mechs are called Gundams. (Shiro in the Gundam Wing universe/reality)

Code (7,321): Pidge and the others keep fond memories of Earth through oldies musical trivia. It comes in handy on a mission.

Self Insert (6,357): Lance reads a story to his niece and nephew on the eve he leaves for school at the Galaxy Garrison. The kids have Opinions on how it should go.(i totally still need to change their names to the canon ones)

Too Soon and Not Soon Enough (1,796): Keith is 13 and is supposed to go to the Galaxy Garrison next year at Shiro’s encouragement. Until the Galra invade and plans change.

Plance on Ice (2,300): A figure skating AU! Pidge and Lance are former competitive partners having a date free time on the ice

Being Plance (3,900): Pidge and Lance pull a personality switch prank over on the rest of the team. Canon verse.

Keeping Cool (3,098): Mermaid AU! Pidge is in trouble with pirates and gets some unexpected help from the sea.

The Cake (839): Canon verse, Lance gets a cake for his birthday and assumes it’s from Hunk.

Frostbite (6,109): Pidge is a renowned super villain. Lance is a hero in training with something to prove. Lance over uses his powers one day and Pidge has some soul searching to do.

Crystal Clear (5,516): Another superhero AU. Lance is captured by his arch nemesis. They have a heart-to-heart, taunt, and flirt.

The Secrets of Beasts (2,007): AU canon verse. Years down the road, Green keeps Pidge from going on a mission with the others. It takes Kosmo to find out why.

See You Yesterday (8,132): Lance works nervously as a bartender for a 1920s mafia when all he wanted to do was leave the farming life. One night he gets a strange patron who changes his life - and his perspective of the world. Time travel AU

Shot Through the Heart (1,087): post canon AU. Lance and Pidge keep Nadia and Sylvio entertained.

Seasons of Magic (11,744): Pidge is a mage. Lance is her dragon familiar. Series of domestic-ish one shots. Not in sequential order.

Between Rocks and A Hard Place (8,144): Canon verse. Pidge and Lance are trapped due to a caved-in mine, with pirates waiting for them on the other side. And Pidge is hurt.

Birthday Prompt #5 (5,500): Oh gosh I never named it. Fantasy AU in which Lotor is essentially Rapunzel and Allura is Aurora with a better (depending on who you ask) birth-prophesy. Tiny hint of Shallura in this as well.

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like A Christmas Carol (Plance- 14,384): post s8 canon verse with @hailqiqi and @sp4c3-0ddity. Exactly as the title says. Lance is the subject of a ghostly intervention. Crack treated seriously.

Fey AU (Plance): with @vivalachocolate this was @sp4c3-0ddity ‘s prompt to Viva but I was nosy and added a chapter and I’m so glad she wasn’t mad at me for it. 😅

I guess the 17 Plance fics speak for themselves. I did write one Lotura fic as a special birthday prompt because @ritsykitty is such a good friend.

Character breakdown:

I have a gen fic for each Paladin, but then the Plance fics outnumber those, so Lance and Pidge would be my go to.

Characters that had the main focus:

So for character POV, each Paladin has one, then within Plance, Pidge has 12 and Lance has 7. Interesting, I thought it was more even. Hunk had a POV in a Plance fic too briefly!

Specifics:

Best/worst title?

Best title: Urgh I liked a lot of them. Too Soon and Not Soon Enough probably. I like how it summarizes the story without telling you how, but by the end you know.

Worst title: Seasons of Magic aka I tried to come up with a clever title when I realized I wasn’t done with it. It’s so bland to me. I’m also basically trying to rebrand from mage/familiar AU. I don’t think it’s working 😅 (not that I care I’m trying to make it easier to reference but I’m too late)

Best/worst last line?

Best: “I love you too, Pidge,” he [Lance] says, nestling her head to his chest and not bothering to correct her. “You’re the best nemesis a hero could ask for.” - I love that line so much, from Crystal Clear. Enemies to lovers is such a good trope.

Worst: Pidge groans. At this rate her double life is definitely doomed to unravel. - for how much I love Frostbite, I really hate how lame it ends. Like I totally could have said that better or continued the scene a bit but I am LAZY.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I wrote waaaaaaay more than expected. I figured I’d write something every few months. Now I can write a 2k fic in a setting if I’m on game.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

I was just doing gen fic last year, never would I have expected to be so taken by Plance that it became my main muse.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Honestly? Probably Pilot. It was one of my earliest VLD fic ideas to do a Gundam Wing crossover and to actually finish a one shot early in the year (when I was still dipping my feet into fandom again) just made me so so happy. I still smile thinking about the continuation possibilities. One of my favorite parts of Shiro’s character is that he is the ace pilot. Because of Keith’s role that sometimes gets overshadowed. I was so pleased to get to highlight that.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

On Ao3, that would be Exsanguination. No surprise there, it was my first posted Plance fic and I continued it.

On Tumblr it’s First Encounters, the first of the Altean Plance AU based on the art and headcanons. I was just struck with a clear opening image one afternoon and wrote it all right then and there. I had no idea it would be so well received.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

Space Birthday. It may have been a bit of a mess since it was my very first VLD fic, but it has everything I love. Hunk bonding with an ‘enemy’ over cooking, Team Punk, Plance in distress, Hunk saves the day thanks to mechanics. Also heartfelt stuff with Keith. And he’s the only Paladin besides Lance to get an actual birthday themed fic from me.

Story that could have been better?

I really hate to say Wrong Diamond, but I totally could have done much better with it. It feels skimpy. Probably why I am still writing in the AU.

Sexiest story?

Ha. That would be a tie between Crystal Clear and Exsanguination. The first I actually tried and the second completely by accident. I’m not sure it worked though.

Saddest story?

All my sad fics have a bit of crack to them. Pilot is pretty melancholy. Crystal Clear has a good Plance argument that gets heated. Road Trip in general though might take the cake. It’s full of angst amid some humor due to the premise.

Most fun?

Shot Through the Heart in terms of tone.

Story with single sweetest moment? Space Birthday

"Uh, Keith, hold up a tic."

Confused, Keith turned back around. "What?"

Hunk rubbed the back of his neck. "So uh, you know we're friends right? Like, I meant what I said we're like brothers. We're tight. I mean, we share a mind inside of a giant robot."

Keith blinked, clearly surprised. "Yeah, I kinda got that from the hug you gave me back then. It was nice," he said with a smile. "And we work well together."

"Yeah so - wait what? No, I'm supposed to be giving you the pep talk here."

"It's fine, Hunk. I'm doing important work and so are you. I already had this talk with Allura."

"Oh. Well, what I'm trying to say is that we're friends. I care a lot about you and your feelings. So if I say something that's weird or you don't like, you gotta tell me. I'm a terrible and nosy person and I'm sorry."

Keith stood silent, processing the words, and then smiling. "I've accepted the side of me that's Galra," he said simply. "It's still a little weird, but I've always had this feeling that something didn't add up." He smiled a bit. "I don't mind a question or two, but I'm still learning myself."

"Deal, no Galra questions for a while then. Just as long as you come visit more often, okay? We all miss you.

"...hug it out?"

Keith snorted and obliged into Hunk's waiting arms. "Always."

Hardest story to write?

I struggled with the ending to Exsanguination. It took forever to come to me.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

I wrote The Secrets of Beasts in one setting and I still can’t believe how easily it came out. I blame the Plance discord folks for putting everyone on a baby craze.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

Not particularly? I write based on my existing understanding of the characters and nothing really surprised to that note.

Most overdue story?

Welcome to the Neighborhood. I wanted to write that Allura gen fic all year (as I wanted one for all the Paladins) and I hoped s8 would give me the motivation. It was not worth the cost.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Collaborations! And participating in a zine! And signing up for events (exchanges and bangs)! I learned that it’s not that scary. People are chill and so easy to get along with. Also the task isn’t as daunting as I think of it’s an idea I love.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

This is hard because I’m already doing above and beyond what I ever expected to be doing writing wise. I suppose it will be to finish my gen fic since I’ve been writing a lot of plance lately.

After using the French Bulldog 5 Things You Should Know About This Woman Dog Mom She Loves Dogs More Than Human Tee Shirts diapers for almost two years I must say it s sad to have to cancel the bundles their customer service is awful and I m not sure what s going on with their diapers my last bundle 6 out of the 7 packs of diapers didn t work the sticky tags rip when trying to put the diaper some kept falling off so the diaper wouldn t stay up I contacted them through email and the person asked me for pictures to show how they aren t working ummm no I can t email you pictures of my half naked baby then she says not what I meant I mean pictures of the diapers so you want me to keep diapers that I have use and take pictures it really makes no sense so upsetting I guess they are okay for smaller babies but not for active 17 month old. So this is going to be a bit long but bear with me I had what I believe to be a pointless and incredibly frustrating experience with the assistant manager jamie at your auburn hills great lakes crossing location today I have been coming here for three years I frequent your orlando san marcos and new jersey locations as well at least once a year when we stop we usually spend 5 to 10 thousand dollars on your products the system is simple I go in park in a corner and bring bins to my corner sort them bag them move them to the front register and repeat today I brought a personal duffel bag as it holds about 8 to 12 of your bags worth of stuff I get told that i’m not allowed to use it because it’s policy not a big deal at all I say okay i’ll do that for the rest rather than rebag all of this i’ll just go up in line and pay for it and it can sit behind the counter seems pretty reasonable to me nope I got obstructed suggested that I might be stealing something and not allowed to pass stating if I don’t want to follow the system I can leave he then takes my entire duffel dumps it onto the floor and then rebags it into victoria secret bags then moves it to the front counter so it can be rang in I thought this was a little odd but hey he was doing all the work rebagging it so whatever i’m like dude i’m going to be spending about 8k today all I want to do is come in spend some money get out without any drama what’s the problem whoevers in charge should be thrilled with a sale like this we’re spending 8k keep in mind that I told him that I would do what he wanted and it wasnt’ a big deal and the response was to the effect of stop being lippy and just listen I told him what do you want from me I just agreed with you and said I would use your bags i’m not being lippy at all I know this because I said okay dude not a problem i’ll use your bags his response was maybe if you get to buy it i’m like what are you suggesting that an 8 000 order is something you guys don’t want he’s like yeah if you buy it i’m like dude we are spending 8k today why would I bag up a bunch of stuff and spend 2 3 hours picking our your fabulous product to not buy it anyway so I had 4 credit cards one card had 2 000 one had 3500 one had 2000 and one had 1000 because I am buying for multiple people I had 4 different cards all in my name I wanted one receipt for each card not a big deal to me right wrong again he cited some policy and said if the order is more than 750 items that they aren’t allowed to ring in under 750 items on any one receipt id like to point out that that amount is higher than your employees said they could take as a cash payment I asked him to please show me that I would understand better if I could just read it he was willing to do so he brought out the policy book and to my surprise what it actually said was words to the afffect of cash payments cannot be split up or over 750 items I forget the second half my immediate reply was so what’s the big deal im using credit not cash he snatched the policy book away from me at that point and said you know what you can just listen to me or I don’t have to let you buy anything it’s up to my discretion I then called your orlando outlet and your new jersey outlet and talked to the store managers and cited your policy I was given I asked them to confirm if that was accurate and both said if it was a policy it was news to them I then asked if they would let me buy my order using 4 cards and 4 receipts the woman at orlando said oh my gosh yes we do that every single day I asked if I went to her store if I would have any trouble with this in the future and was told no then she said you can always come down here if you’re in the area and i’ll be happy to take your order after that phone call I tried again here’s the video of that attempt I said listen I have 4 credit cards your register girl said you told her she can’t ring up an order under 750 items that’s 3500 if it’s 5 items not all of my cards have that much I have done multiple receipts every time I came here heck I can even supply them to show it he tells me that because I am order so many items that I can’t have less tan 750 items per receipt so I point around to everyone else and ask what about everyone else you aren’t forcing them to spend a minimum of 750 items what about the final charge i’ll have 750 items for two tickets but the leftover isn’t going to be 750 items you’re not going to let me buy them he shrugged his shoulders to say no at this point I haven’t yelled ive been a bit snarky and sarcastic because I know he’s just giving me a hard time two people ring in our order almost every time I am up there and we were there 3 times in the last 6 months spent a bunch each time so at 730 8pm or so we are done shopping assuming that two people could ring us up ended up being a fantasy he forced one employee only to ring us up later on he comes up when its now close to 9pm and says hey you mind if we ring you up on both registers I chuckle and say no I don’t but you do you don’t want to be breaking that 750 rule do you he glared at me and then sent the employee away and walked off after blinking a few times I laugh because after telling me over and over he couldn’t do it he just got caught trying to do what should have been done to begin with a short while later after 9 I find out that everyone is standing uip front except for the one girl and another associate because none of the rest of them are allowed to help her ring us up the only two people left in the store with about 700 more items to be rang in if that’s not enough since it was a holidy all of these employees are apparently being paid overtime to stand around and wait at a bit after 10 all but two girls leave and one girl is waiting to count cash while the other girl sits and keeps ringing stuff in we apologize profusely we expected two employees to ring us up like always and timed our visit to be out around 9 if this had happened instead of having one literally stand there and watch her for 1 hour and 47 minutes after close we would have all been out on time and no overtime or extra hours spent so finally at 10 47 pm our orders are done we thank the lovely girl lauren and jasmine who got stuck staying 2 hours past close because a manager made up some random policy and had to double down when I pointed out he really needed to follow that 750 rule when he was going to toss another girl on the register if this is policy fine it doesn’t seem to be no manager at your other outlets knew what he was talking about the orlando one insisted that the only restrictions are on cash payments and verified I was paying cash or credit it’s a pretty humiliating experience to get hassled trying to buy panties and bras by someone who’s on some type of power trip the only thing I said sideways to him was that I flat out didn’t believe his policy and that credit absolutely is not the same as cash I didnt call him any names scream at him or did anything to disrupt the store beyond what you see in the videos if this is not policy i’d like an apology from that manager in person or over the phone admitting he was mistaken I would hope that the next time I go there I am not hassled but if not I guess there’s always orlando or new jersey who seem to be quite friendly I also want to give recognition to jasmine and lauren lauren is the poor soul who got stuck ringing everything in alone because of the manager’s silly rule and not allowing anyone to help because it would be in violation of the 750 item rule jasmine was the cash counter who had to wait until we were out of the store to count cash even more interesting is that I had a former employee with me helping me buy and she said she never heard of this policy either but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t added since she left she was just as confused because the manager spent over 30 minutes trying to explain and defend this when that time certainly would have been more efficiently spent doing productive things instead of hassling someone who literally sits in a corner and speaks to no one while sorting through your products one bin at a time id love a call back about this or to find out what exactly is going on ive never been hassled like this before and it was a little frustrating and very trying to keep my cool joe rossetti alexandria gunn.
