Kaladin's dynamic with Szeth is probably the funniest in the Stormlight Archive. Like they go from enemies with Kaladin literally killing him to both working to the same guy to said guy assigning Kaladin as Szeth's therapist and sending them to the countryside for a field trip.

Oh goodness, I don’t know if I could pick a favorite! I’ve got like a top five or so for each fandom I’ve been in and that fandom list is always growing!

A fanfic that I really enjoyed (as well as one I don’t think I’ve recommended yet) is Dust by isnt_it_pretty on ao3

It’s super in character and the world building details are spot on!

In summary he spends words of radiance generally being part of a love triangle he is only barely aware of, realizes he confused his platonic affection for shallan for romance (which can be common in the aro community, how do you really define romantic attraction? Especially when you don’t experience it yourself?), idk how common it is for allos to confuse romantic attraction with being reminded of your kid brother and wanting to be friends like seriously, he repeatedly forgets that the bridgemembers might get married or have relationships, he seems to think about romance very little compared to other characters, he was notably proud of remembering that uh drehy? was gay and that the other one was dating the bartender woman? Which highlighted how little he thought about it, the few times he mentions it it’s almost like he views romance as a nebulous inevitability rather than a desire, many other fantasy books have a tendency to shoehorn in romance even when it’s immensely impractical so I just appreciated that not being his focus, and I like the idea of having a major POV epic fantasy character be aromantic which we don’t see a lot. I want aromantic rep and he’s a genuinely cool character I like and it would be nice to have a popular aro character.

AND! He was also entirely oblivious to the rhythm of war phenomenon where light eyed women were going to his clinic just to flirt which is a huge aro mood, I cannot and will not register if someone is into me I do not think about it at all.

To me as an aro person I think he feels aro and I simply decided it’s more fun for me that way!

I think I specifically head canon him as aromantic grey ace

8, 13 - Kaladin

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

when people forget his bangs no real answer is probably the sort of baby-fication people will do sometimes? Some combination of his grumpiness + aroace swag + trauma + people's desire to wrap him up in a blanket will sometimes make people write him or talk about him like he's a little stupid anxiety ball that doesn't understand relationships. Like, kaladin is a smart guy who is sometimes bad at social cues or handling how he's feeling, he's not a baby who has zero knowledge of the world around him.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

I think kaladin would be a serial over-user of the thumbs up emoji. You text him pretty much anything and he's like 👍. Man just does not want to be typing Adolin: Just found out navani and dad are getting married Kaladin: 👍

lirin/hesina?

Lirin and Hesina are compelling to me for the way they not only survive but find ways to thrive despite adversity.

There are hints that Hesina may have given up a lot to be with Lirin; certainly his relationship with her father isn't great but that could mean a thousand things. They are high nahn darkeyes in a town of low-ranking darkeyes plus one lighteyed family, and that sets them apart from both sides. They are in a situation where they need to rely on each other for support and they are consistently there for each other. They are a team in every sense of the word.

I don't know if you know, but the death of a child significantly increases the chances of divorce, so we know that the loss of both of their children would've been a huge stress on their relationship. But when Kaladin suddenly comes across them again, we find not only are they still working as a medical team, in positions of leadership in making sure the town is safe at the mansion, but they have had another child. They lost both of their children and they tried again knowing exactly how losing Oroden could tear them up inside. They found ways to incorporate that grief into their relationship! Doing that is such hard work. (Not that other couples don't do that and end up in different configurations or moving on from the relationship, if that's the direction their healing goes! That's also valid.)

So I guess what compels me the most about them is their adaptability, their ability to show up for each other, the strength that they share with each other, and their ability as a couple to keep themselves filled so they never pour from an empty cup.

Can you tell I love them?

Words of Radiance - Brandon Sanderson (Stormlight Archives #2)

5/5 - delicious tension and character interactions; everybody grows; i forgot how absolutely awful Shallan's backstory is, poor girl

Spoilers below!

I love that in each of these novels, Sanderson is dedicated to discussing what holding to your choices and your oaths actually means. What does it mean for a character to promise two people contradictory things? What does it mean for someone to live a lie? How does someone come to terms with their traumatic past, even knowing that they were choosing from a series of bad options? I cannot express how much I love a thinking novel! And not in the sense of "Is killing people wrong? You decide" because frankly that's tired.

Anyway, I really appreciate how much depth that Shallan has in this novel. Explaining her backstory turns her from a character who can be somewhat annoying at times with a dark past, into someone who's actively trying to make the world a brighter place for her own sanity. It also reveals a hardness, an edge to her that is certainly present in WoK, but nowhere near as pronounced. One of the things that my sister and I have remarked on while reading Sanderson's books is that, while his romances are sometimes a little weird (not you Shallan/Adolin, never you), his female characters are almost always superbly written. Shallan is allowed to be competent and feminine while still being annoying and a disaster and too ready to insult people at all times.

Kaladin's arc is one that is incredibly near and dear to my heart, and while I love him and think he can do know wrong (yes, even in the times when he is very much doing wrong), I just love seeing everyone else think he's insufferable and annoying and mouthy! He's a little bitch and I love him for that! They put him in prison, made him depressed and willing to commit regicide, and then he turned around and said (to Elhokar's face), "Let's be clear on this Elhokar, I hate you and you're a bad king and not a great person and also a whiny brat (the tirade continues for a while) but I'll protect you anyway." That's character-of-all-time behavior.

I also adore the way that Adolin/Kaladin and Shallan/Kaladin develop a working relationship over the course of this book. They go from reluctant coworkers into best worsties into actual friends.
