SPY X FAMILY - Character Relations Theory
Spoilers for SxF manga chapter 104 & 106 below the cut:
everyone good? okay
let's delve into the whom is secretly related to whom theories.
I suppose we've more or less heard of the Handler aka Sylvia Sherwood is Anya's long lost bio mom (or at least related) theory,
but have you considered:
Jeeves is somehow related to Twilight, who is originally [Redacted]?
I know it was shown in manga that [Redacted] doesn't have any bio siblings in his family, but what if there is a cousin 1 or 2 times removed or a half brother or long lost twin elsewhere?
both have blue eye color (wiki says Jeeves has dark blue, but I can't find a coloured version of Jeeves, so no guarantees yet *shrug*)
both have quick reflexes and combat skills
both are really good cooks (this guy made a gourmet dish in the middle of a forest; and Twilight under-covered as a world-class chef before)
both care a lot for children and are sometimes lenient on them
both have a over-the-top serious female subordinate
even the way they look to the side, or mannerism wise is rather similar *deja vu plays in the background*
look me in the eye and tell me you haven't seen Loid/Twilight make these expressions before
I know some are really wide common ground for people in this story setting (e.g short reaction time and fighting skills from wartimes/occupational needs) and I might well be grasping at straws Endo put in for Foil comparison between the 2, but the similarities are uncanny
#sxf#spy x family#sxf manga#sxf spoilers#similarities similarities#loid forger#agent twilight#Jeeves aka the Desmond's butler#just speculations for now#granted his hair is not blond but at least that makes for the cousin once removed theory more plausible than others#I almost thought Twilight somehow sneaked into the Desmond family when I saw Jeeves#unless it was just to show Daiman has a brand of proper rapport from home which is similar to Loid's brand of caring#which explains why Daiman seems somewhat comfortable around Loid even upon first meeting back in end of s1#though#if this theory & another theory elsewhere where Melinda and Jeeves are related are both true#this would make [Redacted] Damian's uncle from his mother's side...#oh the irony that they reunited bcz of a mission called Strix#Character Relations Theory#sxf theories

So my full government name is Adriana Araújo Dutra Rodrigues. [Because names in Brazil are VERY rarely a simple two-piece. You usually inherit AT LEAST a surname from your mother and one from you father, but it can get ridiculous fast. I'll talk more about that another time]
I always want a username that also worked as a pseudonym for me, to make it easier for people to differentiate me from the SEA of Adrianas out there (there are a lot of us).
The thing is, my full name is very long for a username. And each individual surname I have is VERY common around here. Heck, without even trying to, I know an Adriana Araújo who is a famous TV reporter and a completely unrelated one who is a politician. So, no dice with my mother's surname. "Rodrigues" is an even more common surname, it's like weeds in your garden. It's marginally less common than "silva" or "costa", but BARELY. And I don't really like the sound of "Dutra", which happens to be the slightly less common surname I have, so it's a no for me (guess which surname the government generator picked to compose my official teacher e-mail?).
The problem with those surnames being so common is that, for every social network, e-mail provider or other internet service in general, I'll NEVER get to be the first one to pick "adriana.[surname]" as a username, with or without dashs and dots. I got a wattpad account AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN BRAZIL and I was still, like, the 5th or so Adriana Rodrigues. So I had to get creative.
Solution 1: If I shorten my surnames into initials, it becomes AdrianaADRodrigues or AdrianaADR, which just look like I was going to write my name on caps and stopped. Which is an awesome coincidence, don't get me wrong, but people wouldn't understand without knowing my full name. The definitive deal breaker, however, is that there was a modestly famous comic artist called Daniel HDR back in the day, and ten out of ten people I spit-balled the "Adriana ADR" option for a username/pseudonym assumed I was copying/referencing him. So, sadly, not an option.
Solution 2: SCREW THIS NOISE I'LL USE MY MOST "EXOTIC" OC NAME AS A USERNAME
Not someone else's character, because I wanted full ownership of that username, but I decided to use the craziest, the always-available-as-username-est name I had in my roster as my internet pseudonym.
And it happened to be Alex and Rose's youngest, Strix. With her surname, Van Allen attached to it. So, from around 2004 until I published my first book in 2021, I used "strixvanallen" as a username in pretty much EVERYTHING.

THIS is Strix van Allen
The only miscalculation on my part is: Strix is an actual character in said book and I don't feel like renaming her. So, I can't really confuse people by signing the book as her and expecting everyone to separate us. Either it will look like she is the secret narrator of everything, which doesn't make sense (and it's Diego's job, who is very protective of it), or it would make people assume that she is an author avatar/self-insert, which couldn't be further from the truth (ALL my characters are self-inserts, duh). So, I signed my book as "Adriana Rodrigues" (it's common, but at least not in the SF/F niche in Brazil, I guess), and changed my usernames all to "adrianastrix" where applicable - since a lot of people only know me by "Strix".
And that's why my blog is called "Just another Adriana Rodrigues" until I find something better. It's a nod to the thousands of Adriana Rodrigueses in any platform that allows Brazilians. Which, to be clear, don't annoy me nowadays. I have embraced the "common name, excentric personality/interests" situation, and find it funny actually.
USERNAME LORE GIVE IT TO ME NOW YOU ALL
#username lore#bigger than I thought it would be#strix#strixvanallen#vampire#I do have this tendency of naming my characters very common names#if I'm gonna struggle with usernames Y'ALL WILL YOU HEAR ME#And I don't really care about meanings#I'm just a mother picking baby names on vibes and personal favourites#Which makes things doubly hilarious when the names DO mean something perfect#Like Alexander meaning “protector of men” or Auguste meaning “majestic” or “venerable”.

Thinking about Strix again, regarding the dimensions, I figure at this point car-sized dimensional footprint means somewhere around 16' in length to maybe 18' in length at the most generous.
For reference 18' is about the size of a Cadillac El Dorado from 1978, 16' is about the size of a 90's era trans-am
#nbeast says a thing#Strix#I have Many Thoughts about tiny jet#because tbh it would fall in line with that show to have an aircraft as small as a car but be able to do Big Aircraft things#and the idea of it is too fun

[Creation of my own Wiccan Tradition]
THOUGHTS - PERSONAL MYTHOLOGY
Erikapaios (Orphic God, the Lord, Lucifer) & Nyx ( The Lady Night ) ''give birth'' by Spirit (Blue Fire) to/ or incarnate as - Eros and Tanathos (Divine Twins of Feri) & to all divinities (of Hellenistic Polytheism), including the Witch Mothers (Circé, Hecate, Nyx, Séléné, Medea ~ traditional witchcraft). This Wicca is duotheist (of course) and very Polytheistic.
The Gods are also the Divine Twins, (Feri Tradition) Pillars of the Wild (The World described in Strix Craft) & the Civilised (Helpol), Artémis & Apollo, The Dioscuri..but also the Red and the Green Man of Blue Rose Feri: Pan & Dionysos. Gender is fluid.
The Blue God is Eros. Arddhu is Tanathos.
Quacoralina is Nyx.
Lucifer, the God, is Erikapaios/ Phanes. (Luciferianism), but also Apollo and Helios. He's may be Abraxas.
Lucifera is also Hekate, Séléné, or Hestia (fundation of the cult amongst human).
Being Luciferians, these Gods remains separate individuals: Hekate is not Nyx, Helios is not Erikapaios. Hestia is not Hecate !!
The goddess of the Esbat is Selene. Hecate is honored by the Deipnon. Dionysos, Aphrodite and Pan, Hermès, Apollon, the Kharites, are important, with Artémis (1st Goddess who visited Gaul) ( Zeus, Asclépios, Hadès ,etc) Primal Gods, Titans and Olympians are worshipped. Heroes too.
The Wheel of the Year is informed by Strix Craft. The calendar incluses also famous greek festivals. There is a myth close to Traditionnal Gardnerian Wicca but only as a formula of invitation of the Goddess and the God: the ''Sabbats''honor individual Gods (Hestia : february the first, etc)
There are other festivals for the Theoi and the Witches.
The Queen of Witches is Circé who also represent ontological anarchy (Chaos, Hakim Bey), the Black Heart of Innocence.
She's the (spiritual) daughter of Hekate & She's a Goddess.Witchcraft is informed by the Land spirits and french folklore can be invited as long as it stays under the patronage of Hecate, the Queen Circé, (to be continued) Hecate bears the Witch Fire and Kirke is the one I chose to transmit it. Some special Tools.
The Divine Initiate is Antinous (the Blue Lotus)
There are 3 types of Ancestors.
This Wicca is dynamic equilibrium between duotheism and polytheism in my own tradition. It names Orphic Gods but isn't initiatory and accessible to all. It's not ''Orphic''. It is the Wiccan Twin of Strix Craft. It is Luciferian.
Respect to Traditionnal Wicca: • Circle: insist, but all spells do not fit well with a Circle casting (powder-spells, etc) • 4 Guardians: _______• Elemental workings • Tools •
Death - Hermes Psychopompe > the Garden of Persephone.
There are 3 souls, 3 Worlds, et 4 main categories of Divinities and spirits : Red, White, Glas, Black. The Witch Can work with many spirits (Médusa, Helios, etc) : this Wicca is deeply informed by Feri, but is not Feri.
This Wicca has 4 focus: Relationship (The Gods and the Self) , Nature (spirits) , Witchcraft and Community (Wicca, Helpol, Witches, Strix Craft)The Goddess Can manifest by the Pentacle of Iron, The God by the Pearl Pentacle (or the other way) etc
Values: to be continued. No Threefold Law.
To be continued.
That's all, folks!

@wesavegotham Haha so I definitely didn't just forget to respond- but anyways, putting this into a reblog bc I suspect I'm going to get long winded as always. I am in absolute agreement about Twilight being someone who is willing to do whatever it takes for his goal of peace. And to be fair, I don't think he realizes just how attached Anya is to him, obviously he does his best to be an ideal parent, and I'm sure he plans to make sure she can live a good life once Strix is said and done. But the simple truth is Anya doesn't *want* any other family or any other parents. Yes, she orchestrated Loid and Yor's meeting for her own entertainment, but at the end of the day, they are the first family she's ever known, and they're a damned good one, even with all their flaws. I don't think expects Anya to carry his same ideal, she's a child, he doesn't expect much of her in general, but Loid doesn't have the emotional awareness I think to fully comprehend what the end of Operation Strix will mean for Anya. But seriously people looking at Loid's very complex relationship with his own emotions and just go "oh no he's a completely normal guy who fell in love and wants to be a dad so bad!!!" like budy did we read the same story. Are you sure? For honesty's sake, I have not read the dance arc (i read spy fam chaps in a binge like once a year or so); however, I am going argue against what I'm reading as anger against Twilight for his inner thoughts about Anya (feel free to correct me if I'm misinterpreting). Because at the end of the day, thought crimes aren't real, and it's not his fault he has the 1 child in the world who knows what he's thinking at all times. Spyfam has a very consistent themes about true self vs outer perception, when it comes to the facades we put up around people to how we engage in various societal roles such as husband and wife or familial roles, Loid is a prime example of such because his inner and outer personas are so vastly different. If this was anyone besides Anya, he would be coming across as a sincere and genuine first time parent because no matter what he thinks of her, no matter how he is using her, he ultimately cares about Anya's happiness and that shows itself through his actions, not his thoughts. If you do something kind but with selfish intentions, the result is the exact same if that kindness was done selflessly. While he does think about Anya in incredibly insulting ways sometimes, absolutely does not have any faith in her, I can't blame him for the effect it has on Anya because *how can he be expected to know.* Another thing I think is fascinating about this is that, in the ways only a child can, Anya does her best to manipulate him in turn. My favorite moment in this regard is during the cruise arc, when Anya is trying to get away from Loid so that she can help Yor. She's doing it for the sake of her mom, but in doing so she's stressing Loid out to the max, something Anya only realizes after she reads his mind at dinner and recognizes how her *actions* are coming across rather than her goals. It's a very sweet moment of her realizing Loid genuinely, truly, is just trying to make her happy and she's sincerely worrying him. Though, I do agree that once Anya's secret comes to life, I would love *love* a serious conversation between her and Loid about everything that happened in regards to their fake family and operation Strix. It's only fair after all the deception and such we see from him in his day to day life. But also that would require Loid having the emotional capacity to be fully honest which is. very hard to imagine XD
I rewatched a few of the early episodes of spyfam today bc getting to see the movie gave me an itch to scratch, and in particular episode two made me finally able to conceptualize what about fandom twiyor that irks me so deeply. If you like widespread fandom interpretations of them I would uh, look away bc none of my opinions on it are positive.
Episode 2 of the spyfam anime remains one of my favorites because of all the little flourishes the studios add to sell you on Yor as a character while also expanding a bit on the manga's original commentary on the stigma that follows older single women. What draws Yor and Loid together as a family is that neither of them are capable of having conventional relationships. Both of them are war orphans forced to grow up far too soon and who threw away aspects of their humanity to fight for what they believe to be a better world. While Loid's position as a spy and mastery of deception allows him to avoid the stigmas that would come from the ordinary person discovering what he does, that is not something that holds true for Yor, whose weakest point is that she simply cannot understand "normal." She's aware of the way her coworkers demean her and insult her but can do nothing about it because her only conflict resolution skill is murder. She is constantly reminded that she is an outsider, hence why Loid's declaration at the party is so meaningful to her, and what convinces her to ask him to continue the facade as a married couple.
Underneath it all however, is a quiet showcase of amatonormativity that drove both Loid and Yor to their arrangement. Eden requires a student to have a perfectly nuclear family. Societal conventions dictate that Yor, happily single at 27, is someone pathetic (to her coworkers) or someone in need of help (to her brother). Marriage is an expectation that Yor is pressured to commit to, and a societal requirement that Loid must uphold for the sake of his mission. And while this showcase begins in episode 2 it is something that spyfam continues to highlight when it comes to the expectations both Loid and Yor struggle to meet when they try to hard/become to anxious over what is "expected" as a married couple vs what the other person is actually thinking/feeling.
Now, what the fuck does this have to do with fandom you ask? Here's the thing. Spyfam reached the broad range of anime fans when it exploded in popularity, which is when I started engaging with it beyond just comments on the latest manga chapters. Modern fandom already has the issue of classifying ships into tropes rather than actually like, shipping characters as they are. And that's exactly what happened with twiyor. People began going "oh my gosh this is the moment she fell for loid," "oh he's so in love with her just look at him," before we had even reached episode 10. Which was incredibly frustrating to me because clearly Loid and Yor are not anywhere near in love that soon in the story- and the basis for that frustration starts in episode 2 for me. Because Loid and Yor's marriage is one that is unconventional from the very beginning, and it is that factor that defines their dynamic an allows them to function as healthily and sweetly as they do. People don't need to be in love to be married or to be a parental unit. None of that requires romantic love, it is simply an expectation of our society, the same sort of expectation that cripples Yor and makes her think she has to find a partner, then that she has to find a husband to appease those around her. Seeing that completely erased in a large portion of art/commentary/fics written about them angers me because its something baked into the foundation of their dynamic and something I feel enhances them as a potential romantic pairing rather than detracts from it. But we can't have that because of course a man and woman living together and caring for a kid fell in love almost immediately.
And don't even get me started on how people misinterpret Loid for their far more romantic interpretations of his motivations and relationship with Anya and Yor or else I will start losing teeth from how hard I am clenching my jaw
#idk idk i just dont think its fair to blame loid for what he thinks of anya in regards to anya being fully aware of it#bc he never treats her the way his thoughts would imply#and its actions that matter first and foremost#again if this were any child other than anya this wouldnt even be a concern bc he hardly ever lets his tru thoughts show#and he in turn does recognize anyas achievements#its just that he has 1 goal in mind and that is operation strix#and he doesnt bother to censor or self correct his thoughts bc they're just that- his thoughts#while its 100% not a healthy way for anya to grow up- the same can be said for her telapathy in any situation#she's intimately aware of things she should not be aware of as a child#which i think is easy to miss because she still has so much of that childhood innocence#bc the author is smart and actually writes her like a child#she knows things she shouldnt but that doesnt mean she always has the capacity to understand them fully#her logic is that of someone her age#spyfam so good#when i have time to fixate on a new thing i will absolutely be returning to it

Damianya turning point
I'm sure this is fairly obvious but I adore Damianya so I'm still going to write this. Damianya has subtly shifted over the years so has my fanon interpretations of them. I think they've became less one-sided and the bus hijacking was when Anya started to see Damian differently (ie. in a better light).
Anya has always reacted in accordance to whether Damian is being mean or nice. (Eg. She only went for Plan B after Damian saved her from the dodgeball despite initially disliking him to the point of not bothering with Plan B.) So when Damian takes the initiative to apologise, Anya instantly beams and sincerely tells Damian he was "super cool". She even calls him a hero (heroes like her dad and Bondman). I think this is genuine on Anya's part because when Damian did his big self sacrificing moment, he had no idea the bomb was fake. He saw all of that danger with none of Anya's knowledge and decided to go for it.
Anya likes being the protector more than the protected (ch 105.5). She is very proactive in trying to save her parents and her classmates. While her parents and the adults are obliged to look after her, Damian is... not. Arguably, his higher social status would make him more "worthy to be protected" than a commoner kid. But while Anya puts on a brave front, she gets scared and anxious like any other kid, seen as when the adrenaline rush fades and she cries into Yor's arms.
Damian, as a fellow child, is not obliged to stand up for Anya. He said he would make the perfect hostage, and while what he said makes sense, Anya can read his mind. The catalyst for Damian to make a move was seeing Anya "look scared" (misinterpretation of Anya being overwhelmed by other's thoughts). And I think hearing Damian's panicked thoughts afterwards made Anya appreciate him more, because he wasn't fearless. He stood up for her while being acutely aware of the risks and being terrified himself. He was a "hero" who 1) wasn't obliged to protect her 2) lacked the information Anya had 3) was just a kid like her. Anya now sees the similarities between herself and Damian (will protect people they care about) while feeling touched by his determination. She's always protecting people so it feels nice to be protected. (And not just in silly situations like dodgeball matches.)
Note that Anya only called Damian a hero after his apology, but not before he called them friends. Anya might be reminded of Strix afterwards, but before that, it was all genuine. Damian acknowledged his mistakes and said something nice, so Anya was also willing to say something nice (and be honest).
There is also the aspect about Damian's family. I think Anya has always understood, even if just subconsciously, that she and Damian are similar because they want to impress their fathers. Now that Anya has met Melinda (and Demetrius), she comes to the conclusion that Damian's family is weird. Someone who wants the same things as her (a loving, caring family) is less fortunate than her. I think this is why Anya directly reassured Damian that his mom loves him + why we got that close up of Damian saying "your family seems nice". Now that she sees more similarities between herself and Damian (and feels better about him), she wants to be kind to him.
Then it seems like Damian and Anya are returning to their bickering status quo. Interestingly, Damian apologies in both the post hijacking chapter and the crunchy cakes chapter. Granted, for the latter he was apologising to Henderson, but I think Anya could tell Damian really wanted to give her the cakes. She happily agrees that they're even and that they can be good friends.
And then, of course, the famous school party chapters.
It is SO important to me that Loid literally thought Anya could dance with whoever she likes. He had a logical train of thought Anya could follow. "So long there isn't any major rift" -> Damian and Anya's friendship improved after the hijacking, and while they still bicker, it's not anything major. Loid points out the Desmonds wouldn't consider Anya and Damian deserves to make his own choice. After Loid "set Anya free", Anya looks at Damian (reading his mind? Judging the situation?) and decides she wants to dance with him. This is a decision she made of her own accord. Throughout the story, Anya obediently followed Loid's requests for Plan B, but when she is permitted (and requested) to "not go for Plan B" and can choose whoever she wants, she still goes for Damian.
Then Anya fought tooth and nail to be Damian's dance partner. It didn't matter that she looked undignified or tore her dress. She just really, really wanted to win. And she shocked even Loid. She won this part without any interference from Loid or reading minds. Anya's just that determined.
And then we have the second most insane panel of this chapter.
No sparkles! No mind reading sparkles! She knows! Because of course she does! While the other girls see it as an opportunity to swoon over Damian, Anya gets straight to the point. She didn't do it with fanfare, didn't do it with a smug "heh". She just said what she knows. Because she knows Damian.
Tying in with what she knows about Damian's family, Damian's words seem like a confession. He's already admitted to her that he's not close with his parents (bus hijacking chapter), and he's now openly envious of a commoner's family. Then he tries to walk it back but Anya knows the truth.
So she also tells him a truth. A truth that she keeps hidden from her own family, but will tell the boy she calls a hero.
Anya openly values Damian as more than an asset to Plan B and no longer grudgingly puts up with him. Sure, he's still a jerk sometimes, but Anya's also seen his nicer/ more vulnerable sides. If Damian is nice to her, she will be nice to him. If he tells her a secret, she'll also tell him a secret. They are similar kids with similar motivations. And Damian is important/special enough that Anya told him her most well guarded secret (which can be dangerous!! Given he's the son of the "evil superboss"!!).
I don't Anya likes Damian in the way he likes her (ie. not puppy love), but she definitely cares about him and almost has a soft spot for him? Like when she truly wanted to dance with him. And she told him that his mom loves him AFTER Damian said something mean (while reading his true thoughts).
While Damian frustrates Anya and she says she doesn't like him (for good reasons lmao he's still annoying), she is willing to be kind and vulnerable. She sees through Damian's snark and arrogance. Almost like she wants to encourage the softer side of Damian to come out instead of his prickly defensive side.
This is subtly different from the fanon in the initial Damianya boom of spring/summer 2022, in which it was jealous/pining/tsundere Damian x smug/annoyed/oblivious Anya. They aren't just bickering push-and-pull frenemies with romcom potential, they're kids with a real connection and they're willing to be soft in front of each other while toughening up around everyone else (eg. Damian instantly calming down in the cake chapter when the other kids left). Anya has always been special to Damian, but now Damian is also special to Anya even without Strix. And he will likely continue to be special. <3

So I've been thinking about them:

Specifically I was wondering what the moment was (if there even was a specific moment) that cinched it for Twilight developing feelings for Yor.
[Spoiler warning: this post references manga chapters not yet animated]
I think for Yor it's pretty quick. Like, this moment here:
Not that Yor fell in love with Twilight then (ymmv) or that she's fully aware of her feelings, but it's explicit that she felt connected to him here and attached in meaningful ways.
But for Twilight, it wasn't so clear. For a while I'd kind of decided that it just came over him slowly (and I think there is something to that) and that there wasn't any singular moment which stood out. But that didn't feel quite right. The more I thought about it, the more I thought there were two stand-out moments, only one of which Twilight actually (semi-)clocks.
The first, which I think passes him by entirely, is this:
In my view, this laugh is an entirely authentic response. I think he is, despite himself, delighted by this woman who 1. just unexpectedly saved him from being stabbed, and 2. did it by sending the guy flying across an entire alleyway.
This is accentuated in the anime, I think, by the jaunty, puckish music that makes up the first part of their marriage theme song. I am dying for the reappearance of this music in some fashion, btw, it's so fun and cheeky and I'm hoping foreshadows their vibe after various revelations and particularly when they start working together as Agent Twilight and Thorn Princess:
The second moment for Twilight, I think, is more subtle for all it's more impactful. Or at least, the degree of its importance passed me by on initial read/watch, and I think it's deliberately downplayed by Twilight himself. Because he does actually clock it but if he looks more closely at it, well... then he might have to do something about it. And maybe that something won't comport with what the mission needs, and then what?
It happens when Twilight first bugs Yor, and then poses with Franky as SSS agents to test whether she knows Yuri is with the SSS.
It's clear in the lead up that Twilight recognises he has some feelings about/for Yor, and he doesn't want to spy on her; he doesn't want to mistrust her at all. He has to convince himself to take seriously that she may be a potential threat.
And even then, the convincing only sort of mostly works, because he hesitates again:
Which is, by the way, bananas. At this point, they've been a fake family for maybe a handful of weeks? Twilight is an experienced, accomplished spy with a finely honed and necessary sense of paranoia. Of course he should be suspicious. Her brother is an SSS agent! Canonically, the SSS are both Twilight- and SSS self-described as Twilight's greatest existential threat. It shouldn't be a question whether or not to verify Yor's knowledge here. And yet.
We all know how the rest plays out. He decides that listening in isn't enough, he needs to confront her insofar as he's able. I wrote previously about Twilight's relationship with Anya and the pivotal moment for him in how his view of his relationship with Anya changes based on Anya's (and Endo's) choices. I think a similar thing happens in this scene with Yor.
See, it would have been enough for Yor to continue to deny, continue to not call on Yuri's help, to prove she didn't know, and to put Twilight's mind at ease.
Endo takes it further.
Y'all: THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WILD. It borders on levels of impulsive foolhardiness that Twilight should actually take as a negative for the person playing his wife for Operation Strix. Yor even alludes later to the problems this could cause!
The SSS are indiscriminate; if Yor was facing down actual SSS agents, first assaulting and then threatening them would 100000% land her in custody. Were it not for Yuri, it may even get her disappeared, based on how casually and frequently Yuri references having people executed. It would absolutely put the Forgers at risk, in general and in the implicitly sexist Ostanian society, because if Mrs Forger behaves this way, how does Mr Forger behave? And why can't he control his wife? The Secret Police are not known for their leniency, their modesty, their discerning, their temperateness, their mercy. They are known for the exact opposite of those things. And due to being a spy, Twilight probably knows they're actually much worse than even their public reputation.
And here's Yor saying: you can question me but if you threaten my brother or my husband, I will fucking end you. Bodily.
Of course, it's entirely in keeping with her character, and it's an entirely revealing moment of who she is. And I think this is the moment for Twilight. He's already been trusting her bit by bit, as he says above, intuitively. I'd suggest that maybe even more than that though, Yor taps into something Twilight deeply wants: backup. Someone and somewhere safe. Maybe we could describe a person fulfilling that role in an adult relationship as a partner...?
It's because he doubts his intuition (his wants, his feelings, things he shouldn't be countenancing) that we get to this point where he (overzealously) tests her.
She blows his test right out of the water.
The SSS are basically the group he fears most; this is reiterated throughout the story. He doesn't trust them specifically because of who he is and also just generally. He doesn't trust their judgment. He doesn't share their values or their priorities. He doesn't like them around. He doesn't like them looking. He doesn't like being anywhere near them. (Also, he's right.)
And here's Yor. Not only standing up to them on his behalf but actually going on active defence on his behalf.
(I pause here to note 'on his behalf' is a bit, mm, tricky, since it's actually technically on Loid's behalf and I have Thoughts and Feelings about Twilight & Identity. But for the sake of the impact of this moment on Twilight, we'll take it as writ that in this moment there's no appreciable difference between Twilight and Loid.)
I think from here on out, it's incredibly difficult for Twilight to ever doubt or distrust Yor. He perceives her as firmly in his corner, that if the chips are down — if his worst enemy and his worst fear come knocking — she'll be on his team, unflinchingly. He may not think there will be much she can do (heh.) or much she can offer given the power of the SSS and her civilian status (I reiterate: heh.), but it matters that he believes that she'll be by his side.
And you know what? He's right. She will be.
That isn't something he's had since he was a little boy. Even WISE doesn't seem to offer that to its agents, given Nightfall's thought here:
Twilight's had to rely on himself for decades and now here's this astonishing woman who will threaten the Secret Police for his sake. Of course he trusts Yor. Of course this moment widens the cracks in his barriers. And further: of course those cracks start to reach into those walls deep, deep inside that protect his heart. This is all before getting to other moments, like when he reflects on how Yor is creating a better world in ways he (thinks he) can never aspire to do himself. That she loves Anya openly, freely, with such dedication, to the point of sacrificing her own needs. That she just never gives up, she persists and persists and persists, always doing her best. That she reminds him it's okay to accept peace and to rest. That she wants and tries to take care of him... On and on and on.
Of course we get to this point:
I'm particularly taken with his body language a little later in the scene. He manages to get himself to sitting but he's still sprawled, open, even as he can't wrap his mind around what exactly is happening or why, and he's feeling vulnerable for all that. But at the same time, this is Yor. And she's safe.
In my view, if the Mole Arc hadn't happened immediately between this moment and the earlier where Yor declares herself unhappy, it would have been clearer how much stress he felt specifically due to Yor's apparent sudden unhappiness with their arrangement. The stress got subsumed (conveniently, ahem, Endo) into the stress and violence of the Mole Arc, but I think it rattled him pretty profoundly. It's also additionally why her warm greeting hit him as hard as it did: relief across multiple lines, such that he had to remind himself not to relax, despite Yor's apparent return to normal.
And there may be added layers to Twilight's reactions to Yor's bad moods due to his familial history, as pointed out by @unhappy-sometimes in this post; the inverse, of course, is that Yor's general good-naturedness would add layers to Twilight's sense of security with her. And the apparent loss of that, all the more devastating.
Rounding out the original moment though, I think this in many ways demonstrates the point:
Twilight throws away the bug. That is also wild. It isn't like that bug could only be used on Yor; it wasn't somehow modified to only respond to her person. It was a device that could be used and reused on different targets, on people who actually are worthy of being bugged, etc. But instead of pocketing it for later use, Twilight throws it away.
Actually: he not only throws it away, he crushes it first. Perhaps because he couldn't stand to have that particular device around, the device he used when he doubted Yor?
Seems kind of irrational, Twilight.
Seems kind of telling.
I mentioned my last Twilight meta about his relationship with Anya: in that, I suggest Twilight recognised entering into a compact with Anya, which subtly modifies, for him, the motivations around Strix. I think something like that happens here, too. If Yor is willing to go to such apparent extremes to protect him, he'll do his utmost to protect her.
I've had this meta in my drafts for a while, but I'm chuffed by this panel from the most recent chapter, as it kind of underscores all this by Yor's positioning of herself:
(Of course the point is there isn't a dichotomy: they'll protect each other, as indicated by Yor's if I had to choose: she won't have to choose.)
Back to Twilight, at this point, he can still justify all this as being within mission parameters. Of course he should protect Yor: she is an innocent civilian and if anything happens to her it would threaten Strix. But if/when this line is tested, if/when there comes a point where protecting Yor is actually the option that may put Strix at risk or put him somehow in opposition to WISE, then we'll see.
And more importantly, Twilight will see, too.
