What do you think about that idea?
A homophonic nerd who hates christmas. Get a present of the local frats and turns into a new member of the frats and celebrating Christmas by getting fucked by his new bros or/and fuck them.
Jeremy groans as he hears aggressive knocking at his door. Maybe if he ignores them, they'll leave. But after a few more minutes, the aggressive knocking returns. He looks up from his chemistry textbook and sighs.
“Its finals season, don't people have better stuff to do? He grumbles as he walks and opens the door, “This better be good.” He mumbles, but as he opens the door, his eyes narrow.
Jeremy glares at the burly fraternity brothers standing on his doorstep- half naked despite the cold. Their obnoxious Christmas caroling grating on his nerves.
“Can't you see I'm trying to study?” he snaps, crossing his arms over his thin chest.
The frat boys' smirks falter momentarily at Jeremy's harsh tone. They shift uncomfortably, seemingly surprised by the reaction. One of them, clearly the ringleader, steps forward.
“Hey, chill out man! We were just trying to spread some holiday cheer.” he says, attempting a grin.
His biceps flex as he crosses his arms, mirroring Jeremy's posture. The others snicker behind him, their eyes roving over Jeremy's slender frame.
“Yeah, you could use a little 'cheer' yourself, nerd.” another one sneers.
“Fuck off 'bros'.” Jeremy mocks, “Don't you have anything better to do? Maybe get drunk and give each other bro-jobs?” He smirks, clearly proud of his taunting.
The frat boys exchange angry glances, but their leader holds up a hand, silencing them. He turns back to Jeremy, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Alright, alright, let's not escalate things here.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out something small, holding it out to Jeremy, “Here, consider this a peace offering.” It's a gingerbread man, intricately decorated to resemble a buff, muscular figure, “I hope you appreciate the effort we put into this.” the frat boy says, chuckling, “We figured since you're so into...books and shit, maybe a little holiday baking would brighten your day.”
The others snicker, but there's an undercurrent of tension still lingering in the air. Jeremy narrows his eyes suspiciously at the gingerbread man, but takes it. After an awkward and begrudging thank you, he slams the door in their face. Jeremy slams the door shut, annoyed at the interruption. He sets the gingerbread man down on his desk, eyeing it skeptically. It's ridiculous how detailed the decoration is, almost like a caricature of muscle-bound masculinity.
“What a joke.” He mutters.
Jeremy picks up the gingerbread man, examining it closer. Despite himself, he feels a pang of hunger. He breaks off a leg and pops it into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully. There's a sweetness to it, but also a savory depth that's surprisingly satisfying.
“Huh, not bad. Maybe those assholes actually know how to bake.” He chuckles at the thought of burly frat bros baking together.
Jeremy barely notices the subtle tingling sensation starting in his legs. At first, it's almost imperceptible - a slight heaviness, a tightening of the skin. He absentmindedly rubs his thigh. As he continues munching on the gingerbread man’s legs, the sensations intensify in his lower extremities. Muscles begin to swell and thicken beneath the surface of his skin, straining against the fabric of his jeans. The denim stretches taut, creaking softly as it struggles to contain the rapid growth. His calves bulge outward, transforming from a lean, wiry shape into a thick, corded mass. Veins pulse visibly along its length, prominent and throbbing. Higher up, Jeremy's thighs begin to balloon, expanding into a formidable pillars of raw power. His quadriceps and hamstrings hypertrophy at an alarming rate, bunching and rippling beneath his skin.
“Fuck.” He mumbles, shifting uncomfortably on his new pillowy bubble butt, “I should move around a bit.”
He stands up to stretch and takes a bite out of the gingerbread man’s torso. As he does, he feels a surge of energy course through his body. His stomach rumbles hungrily, craving more of the sweet, spicy flesh. He devours the rest of the torso in greedy mouthfuls, savoring every morsel. With each bite, Jeremy's transformation accelerates. His midsection expands, the once-skinny waistline now a chiseled expanse of defined abs. Each ripple and groove is etched into his skin like the finest marble sculpture. His chest broadens, pectoral muscles growing dense and powerful. His nipples harden into pert, masculine buds, standing proudly atop newly formed pecs. Shoulders widen, trapezius muscles bulging with strength.
Still unaware, Jeremy's hands tremble slightly as he brings the gingerbread man's arm to his mouth. He bites into the soft dough, feeling the texture melt between his teeth. The flavor explodes across his tongue, a perfect blend of spices and sweetness. As he chews, Jeremy's arms undergo a dramatic metamorphosis. Biceps and triceps swell, growing massive and imposing. Forearms thicken, veins popping out in stark relief. Wrists broaden, tendons standing out prominently as they anchor the gigantic muscles above. With each swallow, Jeremy's sense of balance and coordination deteriorate further. He stumbles backwards, dropping the gingerbread man's head onto the floor with a soft clatter.
“Oh fuck!” He falls backwards and lands on his ass with a loud thump.
At that moment, his clothes rip from the strain of his muscles, falling away from his chiseled frame. Jeremy gasps when he sees his new figure. He surveys his new physique, hands reflexively reaching out to touch the ridged planes of his chest. His fingers trace the defined edges of his pectorals, marveling at the sheer size and hardness of the muscle beneath. Beneath the gaze of his own awestruck reflection, Jeremy becomes acutely aware of the substantial bulge straining against his underwear. He shifts uncomfortably, feeling the fabric dig into the newfound mass. With a sharp tug, the elastic waistband gives way, allowing the underwear to slip down his thighs and pool around his ankles.
“Holy shit... what did that gingerbread man do to me?” Jeremy gasps as he stares at his growing erection and he instinctively wraps a meaty hand around his cock.
A shiver runs down his spine as he realizes the full extent of his transformation - not just physical, but also primal and instinctual. His mind reels, struggling to comprehend the sudden shift in his desires and needs. Jeremy's gaze drifts to the remnants of the gingerbread man lying on the floor. The head, still intact, beckons to him with an unsettling allure. A part of his mind screams at him to resist, warning of unknown consequences, but the allure of the sweet, spicy treat proves too strong to ignore. With a sense of trepidation, Jeremy plucks up the gingerbread head. He brings it to his lips, hesitating for a moment before taking a tentative bite and then devouring it. The flavors explode across his taste buds, a potent cocktail of sugar, spice, and something darker, more primal.
“Oh fuck...” He grunts as he feels a pressure in his skull.
His features begin to shift, contorting into a more brutish, angular visage. His nose flattens, becoming wider and more prominent. Cheekbones sharpen, giving his face a harder, more chiseled appearance. His eyes, once a mirror into his sharp mind, become dull, gleaming with confidence and arrogance. A cocky smirk spreads across his lips, drawing attention to a set of perfectly straight, pearly white teeth.
“Oh yeah, I'm fucking beast mode now!” Jeremy boasts to no one in particular, admiring his reflection in the mirror, “Look at these guns!”
He flexes his massive biceps, watching in awe as the muscles ripple beneath his skin. He gives them each a kiss. His ego inflates with each passing second, replacing any semblance of humility or empathy.
“You know what? Fuck school. Who needs books when you've got a body like this?” Jeremy scoffs, kicking aside his textbooks and notes. “Time to live life to the fuckin’ fullest.”
A knock at the door pulls Jeremy away from his self-indulgence. He quickly grabs a pair of his old red briefs, which strain against his ass and cock, and strides over to the door. The frat boys who had earlier disrupted his study session stare wide-eyed at the towering, musclebound behemoth now standing before them. But their silence quickly turns into snickers and low whistles as they take in Jeremy's exaggerated physique and the prominent bulge straining against his skimpy underwear.
“Well, well, well, looks like that’s the way the cookie crumbled.” one of them jokes, elbowing his buddies and grinning wickedly.
The others chuckle and high-five each other, clearly amused by their friend's successful prank. The ringleader steps forward, patting Jeremy's shoulder roughly.
“Welcome to the team, big guy! Now that you've got the right look, why don't you join us for some holiday cheer?”
Jeremy’s dull mind processes the request, and he grins as they hand him a Santa hat. And despite the cold, he joins his new brothers in their caroling. Belting out the words to various songs. Enjoying the looks of pure lust as he shows off his masculinity. As they walk back to the frat house, Jeremy felt a firm hand on his ass and feels the lustful eyes of his new frat bros on him.
“I think it might be time to frost our gingerbread man.” One of his bros snickers, adjusting his bulge, “You ready Jer?”
Jeremy's grin widens, his dull mind now consumed by a single-minded desire to please and impress his new fraternity brothers. He nods eagerly, a spark of excitement igniting in his chest at the prospect. He licks is lips, imaging their cocks in it- his ass pulsing with need. Yeah, he was going to give them a Christmas they’d never forget.

Cool Kanji Party Tricks
Or “How I Use Kanji to Impress My Friends”
Learning kanji can be daunting, especially for those just starting out in their Japanese studies. There are two thousand standard kanji needed to read a newspaper, but Japanese people know and use many thousands more. There are several methods available to self study kanji (just do a quick Google search to find the most popular), but any serious study of kanji takes time. Lots of time. It can feel like studying kanji over and over is a waste of time, especially since you have the internet at your fingertips to look things up at any time. However, I really believe that having a good foundation in kanji is essential to mastering Japanese, and I wanted to share what I call "cool party tricks" to encourage you in your kanji studies.
Tumblr media
What are "cool kanji party tricks"? This is just a list of things I have noticed that having a solid understanding of kanji will allow you to do. I have been studying Japanese for more than 10 years, and most of these things I just noticed one day in an a-ha moment, and even though someone had told me for years that learning and practicing kanji is important, it took several realizations for me to truly grasp what that meant. I would say that many of these require an intermediate grasp of the language to be able to use consistently, but I think that you can start doing any of these after achieving a basic foundation in the Japanese language.
So when your hand is cramped from writing the same kanji for hours, when on'yomi and kun'yomi have become swear words, and when you lost that one little point on the exam because the kanji you were supposed to use was only off by one stroke from the kanji you actually used... I hope you will remember this post and feel a little bit encouraged.
Find the appropriate kanji to use when typing in the romaji/hiragana on a computer/phone
Since I started my Japanese studies during high school, the formal classes I was taking had me writing out kanji for homework in order to remember it and to be able to pass the quizzes and exams. So I spent many hours writing out kanji only to end up with hand cramps and ugly looking written characters. It took ages and the stream of kanji that I had to learn seemed endless. However, one benefit I quickly saw was that I was able to quickly adapt to typing in Japanese on a computer/phone because I was able to correctly identify the kanji that I had practiced, and knew which one to select when several choices came up.
In Japanese, many words have the same sounds but different kanji and meanings (these are called homophones). So when you type in the hiragana or romaji for a word into the keyboard, it will prompt you with a list of kanji to choose from. Being able to correctly select the right one is something I suddenly realized I could do one day, even if I hadn't used the word often. I knew and could recall a larger number of kanji than I thought, and I could eliminate any incorrect kanji for the word I was trying to use. Having a good solid foundation in kanji characters means that you don't have to go look up every word in the dictionary to check that you have the right kanji, and you also don't have to leave the word in kana because you can't guess the right kanji, but rather you are confident enough to pick the correct kanji for the word on your own. This makes typing more efficient and saves time!
Understand the meaning of a word just by looking at the kanji
When you know a significant amount of kanji and what they mean, sometimes when you encounter new compound words you can guess at what they mean. Or if you are like me and sometimes forget how to read words you are already supposed to know, you can magically relearn them by looking at the kanji and interpreting the meaning. So sometimes when I am reading text in Japanese and I see a compound I don't know, I can interpret the meaning from context and from my understanding of the individual kanji, and continue through the text without stopping to look up the word. This helps you to get the gist of a text without having to look up all the words, and is how you can start reading more advanced books or manga.
Guess at the pronunciation of a word from the kanji
On the flip side of the previous cool party trick is being able to guess how to pronounce a word by knowing the on'yomi and kun'yomi of the kanji, and therefore being able to guess at the pronunciation of a word. Unless the word has 人 or 生 in it. This helps most when reading out loud in class or to another person. It will also help you to feel smug about yourself while reading a book that is of a more advanced level and being able to determine the reading of several compound words in a row.
Understanding a new word using kanji clues
As an extension of the previous cool party tricks, I eventually reached the point where I could hear a word in conversation that I had never heard before, and figure out the meaning using kanji clues.
For example, not all Japanese people know English (shocking, right?), and busting out your phone to look up every single word you don't know can become burdensome in continuing the flow of a conversation. So, if I hear a word that I don't know during a conversation (and the continuation or flow of the conversation hinges on my understanding of the word), I will stop the person and either ask what kanji the word is written with, or if I have a guess I will ask "is this using the kanji for X?" This way I can gain clues to the key word without stopping the flow of conversation too much. (It's also a fun way to show off to Japanese speakers.)
For example, if you hear the word jishin (じしん) in conversation, and you aren't sure which meaning the speaker intended:
自信 self-confidence
自身 one's self
You can ask:
"Did you mean 自信 (jishin) with the "shin" from 信用 (shin'you) or did you mean 自身 (jishin) with the "mi" (another pronunciation of 身) as in one's body?"
Then the person can respond:
"Oh, I mean 身 (mi)! As in, 自分自身 (jibun jishin), or one's self."
Then, you can continue the conversation, having an understanding of what the speaker is saying and not having to take out your phone to translate as often. This also can give the person you are speaking to a better sense of your level and help them to tailor the conversation to you.
[I hope this conveys what I am trying to illustrate ^.^]
TL;DR: Kanji is Fun
Honestly, when kanji clicks and you can read words or understand their meanings, it's like deciphering a secret code, and this is one of the things I find so cool about Japanese, and why I have studied it for so long. So if you are just starting out and are daunted by kanji - don't worry. I am still daunted by kanji, but I also find it a useful tool to improve my knowledge of Japanese and to communicate in a way many people cannot. I hope this information was useful and inspires you to suffer through learn more kanji.

Why not an orange or what was lost again during localization
The first case of Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (Gyakuten Saiban 5) greets us with the mummy Apollo (Odoroki Hosuke), a panicking Athena (Kizuki Kokone) and the defendant Juniper Woods (Shinobu Morizumi), who treats Athena to an orange to calm her nerves and wish her strength.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What if I told you that there is no orange at all?
Tumblr media
これ・・・・差し入れ持ってきたの。 うちの畑で取れた子なんだ。
kore sashiire motte kita no. Uchi no hata de toreta kona nda.
I brought this as a gift. It's from my garden.
Tumblr media
あ、ありがとう! えーっと、これはイヨカンかな?
a, arigatō! E ̄ tto, koreha iyokan ka na?
Oh, thank you! Um, is this Iyokan?
Tumblr media
うん。・・・・おばあちゃんが言ってたの。
un. O bāchan ga itteta no.
Yeah. ...Grandma told me.
Tumblr media
イヨカン食べると、 “いい予感”なんだって。
iyokan taberu to, “ī yokan”na n datte.
Apparently, if you eat iyokan, you get a good feeling.
Tumblr media
(やば。わたし、なんでイヨカンを にぎりしめて涙ぐんでるんだろ)
(yaba. Watashi, nande iyo kan o nigirishimete namidagun deru ndaro)
(Oh no! Why am I clutching an iyokan and crying?)
Stop. Iyokan? A good feeling? Let's figure it out.
The iyokan (伊予柑 - Citrus × iyo), also known as anadomikan (穴門みかん) and Gokaku no Iyokan, is a Japanese citrus fruit, similar in appearance to a mandarin orange.
Tumblr media
The name "Iyo" was taken from the ancient name of a place in Ehime Prefecture, the Iyo province.
The flesh is slightly sour and more bitter than an orange, but sweeter than a grapefruit.
There is a variation grown into a pentagon shape to promote good luck also giving it another nickname, Gokaku no Iyokan, which translates into "Pentagonal Iyokan"
(which is also very similar to the expression 合格 [goukaku] — to meet the requirements;
試験に合格する. [shiken ni goukaku suru]  — to pass (to endure) an exam;)
Tumblr media
And what kind of "good feelings" are these?
In Japan, the citrus can be seen during springtime as a seasonal KitKat flavor with messages of "good luck" to students studying for exams on each packet. The name "iyokan" is also a near-homophone for "good feeling" in Japanese, and is used as such in its marketing.
Tumblr media
“いい予感”
いい — good, beautiful; kind
予感 (よかん) [yokan] - presentiment; premonition
好感 [koukan] — a good feeling; kind feelings, disposition, sympathy;
___________________________________________
I am not surprised that the original name was lost (even the translator makes an orange out of this word). Although it is a hybrid of tangerine...
The localization successfully changed the meaning of the fruit, adjusting it to an orange. Still, the meaning of orange in Western culture varies - "fertility", "prosperity", "longevity", "strength" etc.
Although, it was possible to leave Juniper's grandmother Japanese, especially considering that the granddaughter learned the meaning of citrus from her. Well, that's my personal opinion.
___________________________________________
Dictionaries and forums helped me again, please don't scold me for shortcomings and mistakes. Just point it out

Mandarin has 22 initials, 36 finals, and 5 tones. This means there are 3960 phonetically (and tonetically) distinct words. But the List Of Commonly Used Chinese Characters lists 8,105 different characters (most of which are distinct words) in common use. This means that the majority of mandarin words are homophones. That sounds somewhat annoying to deal with
It really is! Despite having studied it for over a decade I am not a good speaker and never have been and it's for this exact reason. Context and memory. A lot of the time I will remember the characters but the bane of my existence is remembering the right tone
Tumblr media
So I'll hazard a guess based on probability and the other person will say "什么" and then I'll say it again with a different tone until they nod in understanding. Imagine if you were talking with someone at the function and they said "your spear is sister. your fur is sleep. your cat is a plum" watching your face carefully for cues until they hit on the right combination of words to compliment your hat. That's what having a conversation in Chinese with me is like!
This is not even getting into the words that have the same tones but mean different things depending on context e.g. the reason why it's rude to give people clocks as presents is that 送钟 and 送终 are both sòng zhōng but the former means "to gift a clock" and the latter is "to bury a parent"

every time i need to motivate myself to do something i just remind myself that i was denied a perfect score on my junior year book project because i have a lisp and a shortened frenulum -> i kid you not, he said to me [when i asked] "i don't know, you didn't speak clearly?" YOU DON'T SAY 💀 and then the anger keeps me working
anyway this is a character study for early Charles and Edwin, because i have literally never written british ghost boys and i want more content of their orb forms [also y'all were so sweet on my last dbd posts, so i wanna make sure i get the fic just right <3] ↑ basically, think the first scene where Pearl gets poofed in SU -> ao3 fic: here <-
It was odd.
Edwin had spent far more time being dead than he had alive- so he was well aware that only a scarce few sensations remained prevalent in a ghost's nervous system.
Pain, for one, seemed especially common. At least to him- like it was attracted to the mere homophone of his last name.
Well. Misery did like company, to be fair.
On the other hand, feeling any sort of temperature highly depended on extenuating circumstances.
Charles seemed like the exception to a lot of these so called circumstances.
"Edwin, what the hell is that thing?" Crystal cuts in to his thoughts, damn near tugging her curly hair out, "Where's Charles?"
The warm ball of light hovering in his palm bobs as if to say hello.
It's a motion so endearingly Charles, especially when in a room of his own demise, that the psychic immediately keys in. Slowly, oh so slowly, she releases her poor hair- her expression dumbfounded.
And she pokes.
"Crystal!" Edwin sputters, aghast at her frustratingly in character impulsivity. No wonder the two got along so well.
He's about to scold her, and really lay in as to why touching any supernatural entity she didn't understand the delicate complexities of was a bad idea, when he catches sight of the horrified crumple to her brow.
...ah.
Right.
Crystal hadn't been in the room- despite only being a few turns behind them- when Charles had.. what would be the appropriate term for this? Discorporated? Become even more incorporeal? Unembodied?
Poofed?
Regardless, she had likely saw the events that Edwin had been too slow to stop.
Inadequacy clamps around something squishy in his chest- which is weird, considering as a ghost he shouldn't have anything squishy anymore. But- again. Charles.
The room they were in had a splat of ghostly blue in the center of it, around the perfect size for a blow to the head.
With a single golden earring laying in the center.
Edwin doesn't think ectoplasm will be particularly harmful to her, but she's already reaching into the mess before he can warn her to be careful for once.
Warmth floods his blue stained gloves as Charles shrinks against his palm.
"She's not scared of you," he mutters to the poor thing, bringing his other hand around to [gently- very gently] brush his knuckles against that soft light, "She's just worried."
And with every right.
If he was correct [and the chances of the opposite were very slim] in what she'd seen, it was more than likely that the psychic was now privy to the horrific imagery of Charles being bludgeoned.
This was supposed to be a relatively easy case- a warmup of sorts now that they had reclaimed their office space.. how did it all go so wrong?
A simple retrieval case, that's all this was supposed to be. And now..
Again, unprecedented warmth rushes through his form- this time originating from his nose. The little orb had floated up the scant few inches between them to bump softly against it.
How was it fair for someone so impossibly sweet to be dealt such a cruel hand?
"...I'm supposed to be comforting you," Edwin finds himself huffing, the words a touch too watery for his liking.
"Ugh.. even like this you two are disgustingly domestic."
In Crystal's hand dangles Charles' earring, cleaned shiny again with obvious care.
"I'll get the stain out of your sweater back at the office."
That's all he can offer right now, when his mind is already so cluttered with how to keep this delicate form safe. He lets Crystal slip the earring into one of his pockets carefully, his hands either full or stained with the ghostly blue of-
"What happened," the psychic bites out, hesitantly reaching for the little ball of light again- now that she's prepared, "-to the asshole that did this?"
Edwin side-eyes the much larger blue splatter on the opposite wall, before returning his attention to the rather adorable scene of Charles baubling up and down in his palm.
"He finished his business."
[+-+-+]
You know, you'd think existing as an incorporeal being would exempt you from most normal human ailments.
But noOo.
Charles' chest felt unbearably tight. His breaths, breaths that he shouldn't even need anymore, puff uselessly into the suddenly yawning space in front of him.
There's a stupid whistle on the end of them, a pained whimper he was just a little too preoccupied at the moment to be humiliated over.
Nothing was- everything was-
Fuck. Fuck.
Barely a meter away from the.. rather new ghost, his even newer friend stood skewered on a bar of iron.
It was a fancy thing, his frazzled mind latches onto. Pointed in a sort of spade-like tip with winding and delicate vine patterns.
Ornate, Edwin would probably call it.
If he wasn't bloody impaled.
"Charles-" oh fuck, okay, he never wanted to hear that wheeze again, "Charles, I'm okay."
He couldn't help it- he hadn't been a ghost for particularly long yet, maybe two, three years?- but in the time he'd known Edwin he hadn't yet lost his fragile hold on his tone.
"YOU CALL THIS OKAY!?"
Until today.
Edwin shushes him- though not cruelly.
"Yes, Charles, and everything will be fine. I've read about this."
Why would he- that did sound like something he'd do, actually.
Right up there with yanking an iron skewer out of his own chest.
"Edwin-"
Charles lurches forward, already pressing his hands to the gaping hole left behind like he could stem the bleeding.
Though it wasn't really bleeding? It was more.. wispy blue.. smog. Or some kind of jelly? It was hard to tell, even with his hands coated in the stuff.
Slender, cold fingers grip around his wrists- unsteady but grounding as they give the younger ghost a firm shake.
"I don't have enough time to explain," Edwin says, tone apologetic and strained, "I don't know what- exactly is going to happen.. but I hopefully won't be gone too long. Okay? Charles?"
"Mate- what!?"
His new friend, perhaps his only friend, coughs out a glob of the blue smoke- jelly- stuff and then abruptly goes limp. Charles scrabbles to keep him upright, trying not to focus on how unbearably cold he suddenly feels.
He hates the cold.
"Edwin? Edwin!" he chokes, before the older ghost warps like he got sucked into a void.
In his place, is a simple ball of floating light.
[+-+-+]
"Jesus Christ, Edwin."
The matching stares of horror were expected, to be honest. And deserved.
"Poor Charles.." Niko breathes out, delicately cupping the little ball of light between her palms, "No wonder he's so protective of you.."
And that's also deserved.
Because now that he thinks back on it, that must of been well and truly terrifying for Charles to witness. It was terrifying to experience too.
Edwin didn't know what would happen after he.. poofed. Niko chose that term- apparently it was some pop culture reference? Either way, he had no way of knowing that he wouldn't wind up back in hell.
Charles hadn't let him out of his sight for almost two years after that, and his need for constant tactility had ramped up to 20.
"I'm not going anywhere, Charles, you can let go of my sleeve."
..maybe he could've been a bit more understanding in the aftermath... all things considered.
Edwin thumbs over the gold star earring in his pocket.
They were all gathered back in the office, on various pieces of furniture or floor. Or air- if you were a floating ball of unembodied light.
"How long do these little.. forms typically last?" Crystal asks, though it's clear her nonchalance is only a front.
"It depends on how severe the injury is," he indulges, then rethinks his answer, "I think."
"You think?"
"This has only happened a handful more times in the 30 years we've been partnered. Sometimes it lasts no more than an hour, other times it can take as long as a month. I'm afraid we have no way of knowing."
Niko coos under her breath as Charles bumps against Edwin's cheek.
"Aww.. you keep track."
He raises an eyebrow, confused, even as his finger comes up- devoid of his stained gloves- to merely make sure Charles' form is holding strong.
"Of course I do. Why wouldn't I?"
For some reason, his response only makes Crystal throw her head back and groan- quite dramatically too, at that.
"Disgusting," she huffs, adamant even in the face of Niko's protests to the contrary.
Edwin is so caught up in his confusion and vague amusement of their conversation that almost doesn't notice when Charles floats over to Edwin's other side- over the armrest.
At least- not until he starts flickering.
Immediately panic seizes in his chest, and he's jerking forward to catch the small thing between his hands. He's gentle, of course, even as he scowls at the idiocy his best friend is currently displaying.
"Need I remind you what happened the last time you tried to reform early?" Edwin hisses, and subsequently feels like the worst person in the world when Charles seems to wilt in his palms.
Because he knows why his partner is so desperate, alright, he knows.
But...
"I wish you'd let yourself rest, Charles."
It's not just the two of them anymore.
As reluctant to the idea of it Edwin was at first, he's come to greatly appreciate having the two girls in their corner. Crystal, in the way she strong arms him into new perspectives and Niko's near endless optimism.
It's.. nice.
Charles Rowland is the best person he knows.
"Let me be the one to protect you for once... please?"

Wood & Words (part2)
Woodworker! James Potter and Princess! Reader.
Warnings: angssssst. James being kind of a dick? Kinda proof read.
Part1 part3
Tumblr media
For the third day in a row there was a knock on the wood shed door.
Upon entering the shed Y/n was surprised to find James not in the middle of his work but leaning against the wall gazing at the book she had given him.
“Oh your majesty. Good morning.” James said closing the book quickly and placing it on his work bench.
“Good morning Mr Potter, I see you’ve been practicing.” She smiled.
“Oh um yes:” he glanced over at the book with an annoyed expression.
“And how is that going for you.” She smiled rocking on her heels with excitement.
“I believe I had enough for today.”
James had been studying the same couple of pages for two hours this morning and had picked up none of it. The words made no sense and the sentence all mushed together.
James had a tendency to get irritable when he was embarrassed or self-conscious.
It was only natural that he was fed up after two hours of not learning to read a single word. He looked up at the princess, frustrated.
“Oh I see. Are you having trouble.” She asked.
This only made James more frustrated. “I’m not having ‘trouble’ I’m not a child.” He said bluntly.
He turned to his work bench, it looked as though he was working on the shelves of the book stand.
“I didn’t mean it that way..” she scrunched her brows growing slightly annoying at his dismissiveness towards her but she tried to stay calm . “Would you like me to help, perhaps having someone else explaining things will benefit you.”
James did not respond to her. He continued sanding one of the shelf slats.
“Mr Potter?”
“I’ve told I don’t want your help. I’ve excepted the book as a gift and now I’m studying it. Is that not enough for you?” He said not taking his eyes of his work, his voice filled annoyance.
She looked at his profile in shock, why was he being so rude.
“I’m only trying to help.” She sounded both hurt and angry by his out burst.
“Perhaps it’s best if I just leave you be then. l’ll return in a week to fetch those things I asked you to make…I won’t bother you beyond that.” She was quick to turn on her heels and head for the door.
James saw how hurt she was at his reply. He’d felt embarrassed, but he hadn’t meant to cause the Princess so much distress.
In one abrupt motion, he stepped forward and grabbed her hand, stopping her from leaving.
“Wait!” James froze when he realized what he’d done. Touching the princess without permission not to long ago would have gotten him hanged. Thankfully those rules do apply anymore but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t face serious punishment if she reported it.
He was embarrassed but he didn’t dare pull away, even if it was probably the more appropriate course of action.
“Let go of me.” She said in an annoyed tone.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. I shouldn’t have touched you. Forgive me.” James rambled.
“It’s alright James..” she sighed. The sound of her calling him by his first name was sweet to him.
James was speechless for a few moments, having not expected to hear the Princess calling him by his name, again.
It was a nice reminder that she did in fact viewed him as an equal.
“You’re not bothering me. I just…I get embarrassed rather easily when it comes to my... illiteracy, You've been nothing but kind and I’m so very sorry for my behaviour." He explains.
“I…if you don’t mind I would like you to help me.” He admitted looking away from her.
“You do?” Y/n had the biggest grin on her face and look of hope in her eyes. James simply nodded.
“Come sit outside then.” She grabbed his hand and the book, pulling him outside quickly. After a few steps she took a seat on the ground near a tree.
She pulled him by his arm to sit next to her.
“Okay now where was it that you were up to?” She asked pending the book and scooting closer until their shoulders touched.
“Page 6, I believe.”
Y/n tuned to page six. ‘Silent Letters and Homophones.’ She simply smiled.
“Ahh I see…you know I’ve had several private tutors and to this day I this find these to be a pain in the back side.” She confessed.
“Really?” James asked raising an eyebrow. Her confession made him feel a little better about how hard he had found that section to understand.
“Yes I mean your telling me, that when they made the English language no one sat and thought ‘hmmm maybe we don’t need three different theres or a silent k at the beginning of knock.’ It’s ridiculous.”
James only laughed. Y/n began going over a few pages with him explaining the topics as best she could.
“Does…does that make sense?” She asked.
“So ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ are the same?” James responded chancing at the book from over the princess shoulder.
“Yes.”
“Then what’s the point of having both.” James said
“I don’t know..” she laughed turning towards him.
Their noses were only a few short centimetres apart. She examined the specks within his hazel eyes. He had such kind eyes.
“Thank you for helping me, I’m sorry I was so harsh.” He whispered to her not breaking eye contact.
“It’s no problem at all.”
They held there places, a thick tension sat in the spaces between the two, for only a second he glanced down, the princess’s lips ever so slightly parted. He leaned forward, the tips of the nose just grazing each other….
“Y/n!! “ the voice of her mothers lady in waiting, Ms Anne, startled the both of them. “Where are you it is almost supper?!”
“Christ. Where did the time go?” Y/n was quick to her feet. “I’m sorry I must go.” She said dusting off her dress.
“No it’s alright.” James said.
His head felt cloudy. still a bit dazed by how close they had been only moments ago.
Within the blink of an eye the princess was dashing away. He watched has her hair moved along with her in the light breeze. She always look so heavenly.
…..
The following morning Y/n was preparing for the day. She thanked her lady in waiting for assisting her with her dress and sat at her desk.
"Good morning my dear." The queen entred the room.
"Oh good morning mother. Lovely day outside don't you think?" Y/n said with a happy smile.
"Yes it is. Planning on taking a stroll are you?”
"Yes actually I was.” She smiled.
"Hmm, Off to see Mr Potter I suppose." The queen gave a little smirk of amusement.
Y/n's face dropped, her mothers comment caught her off guard. "I- mother it's not... I can explain. He's simply..."
"Oh yes simply making a book stand correct?" The queen smiled with a light laugh. Y/n only nodded.
“That’s not what Ms Anne seems to think. “ the queen took a seat in the edge of y/n four post bed.
“Ms Anne?!”
“Yes she said you too seemed very close when she came across the two of you yesterday afternoon.” The queen said with a smile.
"Mother I-"
"It's alright my dear. You never did seem suited to all those stuffy princes anyway."
"Mother it's not like that. There nothing.....romantic about the situation." Y/n explained.
"Perhaps not. However have a sneaking feeling you're not happy about that" the queen stood once more.
Y/n looked to the floor. As usually her mother was right. "Mother I've known him for three days."
"Your grandfather meet your grandmother at breakfast and had proposed to her by supper time. If anything you two are dragging this out." They both laughed.
"Alright then off you go... he's probably waiting to see if you'll show up again."
Y/n hugged her mother tightly. "Thank you" she said before darting out of the room and heading towards the castle exit.

hey, since you've mentioned before that you're learning french, i was just wondering if you have any thoughts on the science behind second-language acquisition --- specifically on stephen krashen's theory of 'comprehensible input'. obviously i agree that the more CI you get the better but i have some misgivings about an approach that completely rejects any sort of explicit grammar instruction. i think it's possible to develop an intuitive sense of a language's grammar through CI and at the same time be aided by some explicit grammar instruction where necessary. and while i respect that not everybody's goal in language-learning is to speak with perfect grammar, i have to say there are a lot of people who take the 'CI purist' approach who still make fairly basic grammar mistakes that could have easily been fixed by going over grammar. and if they don't mind that then that's perfectly fine but my problem is that they often misrepresent how much grammar you can naturally 'aquire' through CI only. and obviously if your native language is english you can probably get by with not studying spanish grammar (though you will likely still make mistakes) but you're gonna have a much harder time if you decide to not study the grammar of, say, mandarin. anyway, sorry if you're not familiar with the debate and i've just bombarded you with information that you couldn't care less about but i thought i'd ask anyway.
i don't know this particular person's work lol but yeah i think you and i basically agree -- the skills a person needs to learn depend on what they're using the language for, but yea if your goals include knowing the grammar then you just are going to have to do some amount of explicit grammar instruction... like it cuts both ways sometimes (hearing common constructions in films & podcasts sometimes cements them way better for me than parsing them out on paper or whatever) but i just don't think it's possible to like intuit the entire grammar that way lmao.
i guess with french this is maybe a particulr concern to me because there are a lot of homophones so often when i hear a word out loud, i only know which it is based on context (vers/ver/verre/vert...) so like my listening comprehension & grasp of grammar are mutually complementary skills. like i basically only used reading knowledge for many years & in retrospect that was kind of foolish because i read better when i hear better -- i think this is probably true of pretty much all languages lol. again though which skills matter to you does just depend on what you need to be able to do with them. so

[set after the final chapter of the main story but before its epilogue]
Straits of Singapore, 30km off Singapore
"Sir, are you sure he'll show up tonight? It's been hours and still no sign from Park, Kim or Min."
Seokjin studied the piece of paper between his fingers. It was crinkled from having been stored in his jacket all evening.
A dry laugh left his lips then. "Don't worry, Blake," he said into the radio, "When Park Jimin says he's showing up, he will."
"Roger."
A muffled chuckle was heard beside him as he put the device down and he glanced at Hoseok resting his folded arms on the desk. "But only if you cracked his riddle correctly," his former team mate and friend pointed out with a raised brow, "I mean, you sure about time and place?"
"Pretty sure, yes. He sent that with a postmark from Singapore," the leader of the robbery department nodded and held the paper out for him. Hoseok grabbed it with curiosity, reading over the scribbled note with a hum.
'Meet me at the deck with no cards,
when the sun comes home.
Don't forget to wear a bow tie!
I'll bring the bow, not the arrows though.
See ya!'
"'Deck', 'bow' and the 'see', which is a homophone of 'sea' - it all hints to a ship. And this cruise ship with a bunch of loaded people is the only kind our thieves would be interested in."
"Yeah, I see - no pun intended," the leader of the organised crime department said and slid the note back, "And 'when the sun comes home' means when it's the closest to earth, which was today. Summer solstice."
"Exactly."
"Okay, fine," Hoseok sat back and let his eyes wander around the security room. Eventually adding with a sigh, "But I'm still bummed he had to pick the same time and place my team's got to perform an undercover operation at. Too many cooks spoil the broth, you know. There're so many other places or dates."
"You forget the CEO's wife owns this highly valuable black pearl. I bet everything I have that this is what they're after."
"Probably."
"The better question is, why does that mob boss you're after have to attend the same party."
"What do you think.." Hoseok propped his jaw on the palm of his hand, a sarcastic smirk playing on his lips. "He's acquaintance with Lee, that CEO."
A short laugh left Seokjin's lips and he averted his gaze from the security screens. "Of course, criminals and CEOs are not that different from each other after all."
His younger colleague showed his agreement with an amused chuckle when his radio transmitter beeped.
"Sunflora here, what do you have for me Squirtle?" he answered, causing Seokjin's brows to furrow.
'Squirtle' and 'Sunflora' were the names of Pokémons after all. So he gave Hoseok a wondering look which the latter only dismissed by waving his hand.
"Purugly is heading to the restrooms. S-should I follow?"
'Purugly'. Another Pokémon.
"No, but keep an eye on him nonetheless and wait in a good distance. If he doesn't come out in five, report."
"Understood."
He put the device back down, meeting Seokjin's questioning face. "So?"
"What?"
"You got Pokémon codenames? Never knew you were so into it."
Hoseok shook his head though. "Wasn't my idea," he explained with a laugh under his breath, "Squirtle is her favourite one and she claims she looks like it, that's why she always uses it. So I thought why not using these names for all of us? Makes the whole undercover thing a bit more fun."
"Huh, that's clever. I should do that, too, from now on." The older agent paused but only for dramatic effects as he added with a sigh, "Disappointed I didn't come up with that myself."
"Be my guest. Have you any in mind already?"
"Charmander, of course!" he exclaimed full of enthusiasm and picked his own radio device. "Blake, Jeon? From now on only call me 'Charmander' over the radio. Got it?"
Jungkook's chuckle was heard on the other line. He was rather amused than irritated, but even Skylar wasn't questioning her supervisor's quirks anymore. Both replying with: "Roger that, Charmander."
"You really do with them whatever you want, huh?" Hoseok wondered with a laugh while scanning over the security screens from the ballroom where the birthday party happened.
Considering they were on a cruise ship, it was impressive how grand it was. Opulent decorations like crystal chandeliers hanging above the heads of guests, adding to the ambiance of the ballroom. People dressed in their most expensive and fashionable gowns and suits while enjoying conversations and litres of flowing champagne and wine.
Seokjin only shrugged with a smile. "The kids are alright and they're able to see a joke. But I do sometimes miss you and Namjoonie. Remember when we first started out together?"
Hoseok huffed out a laugh, reminiscing the past when the three of them started out in the robbery department together. "Don't remind me, I'm glad I don't have to deal with the shenanigans of these thieves anymore." He patted Seokjin's shoulder than. "But it was surely fun with you guys, I miss that, too."
He was about to add more when his transmitter beeped once again, interrupting his train of thoughts.
"Squirtle here, he hasn't come out yet."
With a groan, Hoseok's face hardened and he got closer to the screens. His eyes narrowing as he switched through the cameras. It always astonished and in some way also scared Seokjin how he could go from cheery to professional within a second.
"Squirtle, you hear me?"
"Yes, Sunflora."
"There hasn't been any records of him leaving through the other side of the corridor. Are you sure he hasn't returned to the party?"
"Positive. Is there a different way out?"
Seokjin's eyes widened at this and he grabbed the blueprint they'd got from security, eyes searching for any possible vents or openings. He gestured to Hoseok to pass him the radio over.
"Here's Charmander. According to -"
"Sorry, who's there?"
Remembering he'd literally only just come up with his new codename and had never directly spoken with this 'Squirtle' before, he laughed a little embarrassed to himself. "Sorry, agent Kim from the robbery department here," he spoke firmly, "The blueprint doesn't show any other means of escape, unless he decided to swim back to shore. So he must be still in there. Wait another five."
"Okay, got it."
"Is that Squirtle good?" he questioned his friend while sinking back into his seat, observing the monitors.
"She's my best agent actually," Hoseok answered truthfully, "You should've seen her shooting her way through and bending a whole gang boss to his knees. It was beautiful."
The older agent whistled lowly, quite impressed by the thought of that. Or at least how he imagined it. "Sounds like a feisty one."
"Depends. She's surely a lively person, but once you get to know her, she's an easy-going homebody. Similar to you."
A scoff passed Seokjin's lips, pretending being offended by his words. "So you wanna say I'm not unique?"
"Well, I wouldn't subscribe to that," Hoseok said with a teasing grin, "Both of you also get upset in the same hilarious way actually."
"Ouch, that hurts my pride you know."
The two shared a laugh when a sudden commotion on the monitors caught their attention. The guests seemed to be agitated and scattering around the area.
"Jeon, Blake, what's going on there?"
"The black pearl, it fell from Mrs Lee's brooch."
"There's multiple pearls on the floor now! It created a turmoil."
"I can imagine," Seokjin muttered before speaking louder into the radio, "Keep your eyes closely to the guests. Surely that's a distraction by Jimin and the like."
"Of course."
He stood up then, sliding on his black suit jacket. "I'm heading out for support. See, told you he'd show up."
"You need my help? I could tell my agents -"
"Nah, don't worry. I'm sure you guys have your hands full with this commotion, too."
"Sunflora?" Indeed, Hoseok's own agent tried getting in touch with him. And he gave Seokjin a thumbs up, wishing him good luck as he headed out, before grabbing his radio device then.
"Sunflora here."
"I spotted Purugly. He's rushing out with a group of people due to some uproar, I'm following him."
"Roger, Squirtle. Be careful in the chaos, it's a distraction from the thieves. The robbery team will handle it though. You focus on our guy."
"Got it."
»»»
Seokjin squeezed through the noisy and fidgety mass, people hunching and picking up any black pearls they could find - or at least the fake ones Jimin had spread around to cause this uproar.
It was impossible to draw his gun with so many civilians around, so he just continued with careful steps and sharp eyes. Soon spotting something that rose enough suspicion in him to follow it. A rather calm man was galantly making his way among the rambling crowd.
The main reason this man rose his suspicion was rather intuitive though. He recognised him being one of the bodyguards close to the Lee's, he'd stood beside them all evening. Of course his agents had already checked all stuff members for possible disguised criminals before boarding the ship, but they hadn't been observing them nonstop ever since. And this bodyguard now was clearl heading to the exit instead of being on the other side of the ballroom with his boss who was panicked and shouting at his men to find his wife's pearl.
With a confident smirk, he neared the man until he was close enough to grab him by the shoulder. "And I thought you'd never make your appearance, Park Jimin. You had me waiting for quite some time," he sighed in fake-annoyance.
The man visibly flinched at Seokjin's words, glancing over his shoulder then with a lopsided grin.
"Sorry, pops! Got a date with a pearl!"
He abruptly crouched, disappearing from his sight and Seokjin spotted him a few seconds later further away. He'd got rid of his disguise by now and promptly continued his way among the people. But Seokjin wouldn't let Jimin throw him off so easily.
He was close on his heels and Jimin could feel it. His eyes quickly scanning the area for any possible distraction when seeing the interpol agent almost having reached him again. But then he realised that he was literally in the middle of possible distractions and smirked as soon as he spotted a suitable one.
As he continued pushing threw the mass of people, he grabbed someone's wrist and abruptly tucked the person backwards. Right in front of Seokjin, blocking his way. It was a young woman with dyed dirty-blond hair and in the pushing and shoving, stumbled and fell against the agent's chest who caught her out of reflex.
"My apologies, miss, but -" Seokjin was about to politely shove her away when their eyes met. And any further words got stuck in his throat instead.
He swallowed hard. She was the most mesmerizing woman he'd ever seen in his life.
Full cheeks, cute nose, pillowy lips and soft brown eyes which were staring back at him intensely, placed so perfectly that it completely disarmed him and took his breath away.
For a moment he wasn't in the middle of the ballroom anymore, he was in the abyss of her wondering orbs.
The woman seemed just as stunned, her expression mirroring his.
However, soon he was washed back to the shore of reality and his memory returned, recalling his initial task of chasing after Jimin.
"S-sorry."
The woman's eyes turned into a dazed scowl, as if she herself had just snapped back into reality and wouldn't recognise the place she found herself in. She stepped back, at least as much as she could in the crowded space, his hands sliding off from the warm skin of her arms. And without a single word, she simply turned and disappeared back into the sea of people. Like a siren who had lured him into her world only to release him again after growing bored.
Someone in his work field and position shouldn't get that easily distracted and usually he didn't. But something in this mysterious woman completely enchanted him and it was more than unfortunate they had to meet under such circumstances.
Perhaps, in a different profession, in a different life, he could've met her differently. Could've spoken to her more.
By the look in her almond eyes, she might've felt the same sugar-rush shooting through her chest. But it didn't matter anyway, he wouldn't see her again. And he had to focus on more important things right now.
He began running through the now less dense becoming crowd, out of the ballroom. The double doors closed behind him with a dull sound, drowning out the jarring voices from inside. The corridor was long and he'd seen Jimin running towards it so it was his best shot right now.
Eventually reaching outside the deck, he was met with the strong night wind of the open sea tousling his dark waves. It was sparsely lit, only a simple lamp every few metres illuminating the broad area. And there at its end, on the very edge, he found the masterthief standing and laughing as soon as he noticed Seokjin nearing him. As if he'd been waiting for him all along.
"Oh damn, didn't expect you back so soon. Really thought I made a good choice there, could swear she'd be your type."
The agent laughed under his breath, biting down his lip. It wasn't surprising to him anymore, knowing his opponent well enough in all those years to know his little mind games. So he chose to ignore his comment, not giving him the satisfaction of a retort. Although Jimin already knew the truth by the brief look that passed Seokjin's eyes.
"Hands up," the agent said instead with a confident smirk, now able to draw his gun, "Unless you wanna fall into the cold sea."
The thief, however, only met him with an unfazed glance. His arms slowly going up before one of his hands turned, revealing something between his fingers. And under the light of the full moon he could see it sparkling dark. The black pearl.
Seokjin could tell it was the real one.
"Hm, maybe I'll do just that. You know, return the pearl to its natural habitat on the way, too. Thanks for the great idea, pops!" His lips curled further into a beaming grin and before Seokjin could react, Jimin let himself fall backwards.
Perplexed, the agent rushed to the railing. The harsh wind hitting his face as he looked over it, making out the outlines of a motorboat in the darkness. Diverging from the ship and driving towards the coast.
"Dammit." He sighed and hit the cold metal of the railing, letting it echo get swallowed by the waves. With a dragged sigh, he couldn't help but laugh shortly before pulling out his radio device.
"Jungkook, Skylar?"
Jungkook was faster to answer this time."Yes, sir?"
"Find a radio unit and alert coastguards and agents on the mainland to keep an eye on a motorboat coming from our direction."
"I assume it's about our thieves?"
"Correct, Jeon."
"Roger, I'm on my way."
Returning inside, he caught sight of security guards and staff members who had managed taking back control over the situation and calmed people down.
He came across one of the other agents of Hoseok's team and asked him where his supervisor was. The agent told him in the manager's office with their suspect and Seokjin thanked him before making his way there. As he passed by with hasty steps, walking to the other end where another door led to the offices and security room, he spotted the CEO and his distraught wife being questioned by Skylar in a corner.
Soon he reached a cherrywood door, giving it a few knocks and watching it open at the third knock, revealing his friend behind it. And Hoseok stepped out.
"Heard you got your man, that must be him I assume?" he motioned to the handcuffed guy at the armchair behind Hoseok's shoulders.
Hoseok grinned. "Yup, our 'Purugly' aka Mr San Shinjuk. Isn't that right?"
The criminal kept an desinterested and bored expression, unimpressed by his enthusiasm. "You got nothing on me anyway."
"I wouldn't call a wad of 100,000 won notes and exposing documents, nothing," Hoseok countered with a raised brow, making the man scoff and grow back quiet. Making Hoseok grin widen before joining Seokjin outside in the corridor, closing the door behind him.
"What happened with Park?"
Seokjin only let out a dry laugh. "Well, let's say at least you got your guy.."
Hoseok's eyes widened. "You mean he -"
"Yeah, yeah," Seokjin ran his fingers through his hair, "They got away again."
"Well, next time then."
"Of course next time!"
"I gotta say though. Thanks to the little panic he created, San couldn't complete his restroom deal," Hoseok chuckled.
The irony that his friend was thankful to his nemesis wasn't missed on him. "So that's what took him so long in there.."
"Exactly."
"But I surely won't thank Jimin," Seokjin huffed then, "Would only get into his already big head."
"Sir!"
The yell coming from the end of the corridor, cut their laughing off. The person audibly churned up as they came closer.
"Sir, I'm sorry I lost San. Someone pushed me and there was an idiot blocking my way. Otherwi-"
"Don't worry, Kim," Hoseok interrupted her with a reassuring smile, "You did a good job. We got him."
The woman sighed in relief and her tense shoulders relaxed. A weight seemingly being lifted from her shoulders. "I'm glad, I was worried we wasted our chance."
She was about to leave again when her eyes landed on the person beside her supervisor
Seokjin had turned around to see who Hoseok was talking to behind his back.
And both grew stiff.
There she was, the woman with the full cheeks and dazzling eyes. Her waves pushed to one side, cascading down her shoulder softly as silk. Their bright shade contrasting the black fabric of her tight dress. Now without endless people surrounding them, he had a clearer view on her, seeing it reached only half her thighs, leaving a handwidth of skin between its hem and her overknee boots who added height to her rather petite physique. And he noticed the grip of a 9mm peaking out from one of them.
He watched her burgundy lips part then in shock, unable to avert her eyes from him either.
"The idiot," she eventually breathed, causing the sudden tension to dissolve abrubtly. And Seokjin scoffed amused. "Excuse me?"
She dismissed his question and instead glanced at Hoseok behind him. Only earning a confused glance back. "You two know each other?"
"This is the idiot who blocked my way!"
"Hey, wait a sec, I didn't do it on purpose!" Seokjin quickly defended himself, "Jimin pushed you onto me, so if someone blocked anyone's way it was you blocking mine."
Flustered at the unknown to her details on the incident, she folded her arms and looked away. "That- that wasn't my intention," she mumbled then with a small embarrassed huff.
The taller man sighed and mimicked her in a less serious manner. "Neither mine."
"Well," Hoseok began then in an attempt to change topics, "Agent Kim, how about you let me introduce you to the other agent Kim then?"
She frowned, looking Seokjin up and down. "You're an agent?"
He ignored her judging glare and flashed her a charming smile instead. In a way, he found her even more intriguing now than before. "Nice to meet you. And you are?"
Hoseok nudged his arm as he stepped beside him. "She's the one you talked to earlier. Agent Kim Yongsun."
"You-" His eyes grew, facing her again with a stunned expression. "You're 'Squirtle'?"
Yongsun unintentionally backed off, equally astonished. "You are 'Charmander'?"
This was the guy who also used Pokémon codenames like her? No way.

"Hey."
Yongsun averted her gaze from the waves beneath her, the wind brushing rather harshly against her bare skin. The ship was heading back to the harbour, all guests having been gathered back inside until arrival and she used the short length of time to enjoy the city lights in the distance sparkling like watercolour on its dark surface.
"H-hey."
She straightened herself when seeing Seokjin approaching her on the deck. He emerged from under the sparsely lit canopy with a timid smile on his lips. His dark brown hair pushed back by now, his forehead peaking behind a few loose strands. His tall figure came to an halt beside her then and he shoved his hands into the pockets of his suit jacket that was casually left unbuttoned.
"I didn't think I'd find anyone here. You alright?"
"Yeah."
Oh, he did look like a deity – exuding the perfect balance of authority and charm.
Her breath hitched and she managed to give him a nod along with a hum through her folded lips. Focusing back at the crashing waves underneath.
Truth was, she was uncertain of how to face him again after the previous hour and perhaps also tried avoiding him by staying out there. After all, she'd called a department leader an idiot. It didn't matter that she'd found out - after asking around her team mates - that he was actually a year, almost two, younger than her. In the agency, he remained a senior agent to her.
Sure, she hadn't been aware of who he was in that moment and he'd also seemed taking the whole story with humour. Yet, she couldn't help feeling awkward and mortified in his vicinity. She couldn't even look him straight in the eyes anymore. Even if it didn't cause her trouble at work, it still remained an embarrassing memory and she felt her face heat up.
"Sorry again for earlier," she mumbled while grabbing onto the metal pole of the railing, in search for the right approach, "For.. for blocking your way and.. and also calling you an idiot."
He hummed and contemplated for a moment by tapping his finger against his chin. "Hm, thinking about it now.. I should probably get compensation for personal suffering. That 'idiot' really hurt, you know," he deadpanned, earning a quiet gasp from Yongsun.
She faced him with wide eyes, ready to argue when instead she met his amused grin. He was only joking. She relaxed and tucked away some streaks of hair the wind had swept in front of her eyes.
"You totally should," she laughed softly then.
"You wouldn't mind paying me compensation?"
"Who says that I'd be the one paying?"
"You were the one making me suffer after all," he countered.
She could only laugh out at his teasing smirk. "But wasn't it all the thief's fault in the end?"
"Hey, he wasn't the one calling me an idiot," he countered with raised brows. The fake upsetness on his face made her laugh even more. It was a loud, squeaky laugh and her eyes disappeared.
He smiled. She was cute and not intimidating at all. Hoseok had been right.
The friendly banter had calmed her previous nervousness. It was easy to get along with him which shouldn't be surprising considering he was friends with Hoseok, one of the nicest persons she knew.
But she remained firm in her stance. Arms folding in front of her chest then. "He was the one pushing me to you, though, so it's his fault really," she said. An almost cartoonish grin on her painted lips.
Much to her surprise, however, Seokjin's demeanor visibly softened at this. Eyes flickering over her round face before settling back to the illuminated skyline of Singapore. "Ah, but I don't mind that part so I can't hold it against him."
Her brows furrowed, feeling like she'd lost the thread. "Why not? I thought it prevented you from catching him."
He simply shrugged his broad shoulders. "I got to meet you this way, didn't I? So it wasn't all too bad."
The night was rather brisk out there on the open sea and yet Yongsun felt like standing at 32°C in the midday sun.
He was most definitely flirting with her, even if it was in a smooth subtle way. And the worst part was that she didn't mind.
Still, she decided not to make a big deal over a hot flush because literally anyone, even furniture, would get butterflies with this guy.
His eyes left the lights in the distance then, a timid smile dancing on his lips. "Sorry, was that inappropriate?" he asked bashfully considering her silence, "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
She hadn't noticed how flustered she'd been and swallowed, clearing her throat when finding her composure again. "I'll let it slide," she said with as much nonchalance as she could fake in that moment, glancing briefly at him and noticing his blushing ears, "But only because we're in different departments and I won't have to fear favouritism."
"That's true. Although your teamlead is one of my best friends, so who knows.."
"Well, I'll trust that he won't do any."
He laughed lightly. "True, he wouldn't."
"You should be extra nice to the thief next time," she continued then, "You know, to thank him."
"Not that bad of an idea actually. I could crack less jokes when arresting him."
Propping her jaw on the palm of her hand, she glanced at him amused, the distant lights dancing in her eyes. And when she smiled in a way her teeth peeked a little through her lips, he could swear that he died, just a little bit, when she looked at him like that. Like he was the only man in the world. "You're a funny guy, aren't you?"
He breathed. "I try to at least."
Her gentle eyes wandered down to the sea again. The harbour shining clearer now as they drew closer. "You know," she spoke up, mischieviousness returning to her features, "I'm only apologising for the 'idiot', nothing more."
His brows knitted together. "Didn't you also apologise for blocking my way through?"
"Hm, I take it back since you said you didn't mind that."
Humming, he folded his hands and propped his elbows onto the railing. Neither one was a big deal for him and he'd found it rather funny how flustered she'd been once Hoseok had told her who he was. But he couldn't help it, he enjoyed teasing her over it.
"Mh, fair enough. I still forgive you for both though."
"Maybe I should've called you something worse then. Like douchebag or jerk," she mused with an arched brow only for her laugh to die down as soon as Seokjin leaned in. Narrowing the gap between them.
All of her pretend-confidence fell apart at the sudden proximity of their faces. Heaving a shaky breath, her eyes flickered to his plump lips which he noticed. And it took everything in him not to close the gap completely.
"You can call me whatever you like." His voice was deep and feathery, brushing over her flushed cheeks like a whisper only for her to hear. "But obviously not during work," he added with a laugh as he retreated, "That'd appear highly unprofessional. For both of us."
Taken aback, Yongsun watched him walking away, heading back inside without even giving her time to properly ponder over his words and their meaning.
"Wait!" She turned around abruptly. There was a lovely innocence in her round eyes. "What do you mean?"
Seokjin, however, only shrugged with an ambiguous smile. "Who knows." He opened the door then but before entering, he paused and faced her again. "You should also come inside. As beautiful as this dress is on you, it won't prevent you from catching a cold."
She frowned and looked down on her short dress. Only then she sensed the cool breeze surrounding them again. In all the time he'd been around she'd completely forgotten about the chillness out there.
"Uh, yeah. In a minute," she said, feeling her cheeks blushing over his, once again, subtle way of complimenting her.
He gave her a nod and disappeared through the door. Leaving Yongsun back on the dim-lit deck.
She couldn't quite figure out if the beauty of his lips was more their softness or their association with the words he spoke.
Scrunching her nose, she folded her arms on the railing, letting the wind gently tousle her blond waves. It was a pity that she began shivering now considering the beautiful view. Perhaps she should indeed get back inside before catching a cold, despite the urge to clear her mind even more after that anew intense accounter with him.
And she wondered, was it alright flirting with him like that? He might not even be in her department, but he was still another agent. And a higher-ranked one, too. Then again, he had done most of the work, really. She'd simply played along.
Shaking her head, a dry laugh left her tinted lips.
Either way, it wasn't like this would lead anywhere. They worked at different departments, on differents floors. Their paths most likely wouldn't cross again unless another joint operation happened.
And for some reason that realisation filled her with disappointment.
She wasn't usually the type of woman to feel easily attracted to men or even cared enough to give a second thought to them. But his kind eyes and enticing face did sparkle something in her. And the fact his male ego didn't seem hurt but rather took her earlier blunder with humour, was definitely a bonus point. Besides, he generally didn't seem to take himself too serious either. Both fatally opposite traits in most other men.
Yongsun was so lost in her thoughts, she didn't pay attention to the sound of the door opening again and someone stepping out. Only when fabric met her skin, wrapping around her shoulders and back, she realised she wasn't alone anymore and was ready to draw her gun when a soft laugh was heard.
"What a scaredy-cat," Seokjin teased and her eyes widened when seeing him standing there in nothing but his black button-up shirt. Her glance fell and she realised his suit jacket was drapped over her, instinctively grabbing its collar. She about to reject his offer, when meeting his warm smile.
"Thought it's better than nothing."
"T-thanks."
He gave her nod and turned around, returning to the door when he glanced at her over the shoulder. "You can return it next time we meet. I'll make sure it's soon, this is my favourite suit after all." And Yongsun's eyes widened when seeing a wink follow his words before he returned inside.
Stunned, her thoughts raced and tripped over each other.
They'd eventually meet again. Soon.
Her fingers unconsciously curled more, tightening their grip on the suit jacket.
She only hoped he was sincere. After all, she could tell he wasn't the kind of man a woman got a simple crush on. He was the kind of man you fell hard for, and the thought of that terrified her. She didn't want to fall hard for anyone at all, especially not a superior agent or someone who might not mean any of his words.
But she had always been a curious cat. And Seokjin definitely triggered her curiosity.
With a small huff, she slid her arms into the jacket. It was still warm from his body and it made her shudder. Burying her hands deep into its pockets.
Great, she thought.
Now she had a crush on her supervisor's best friend.

Tomb of Yu Hong 592-598 CE. Link to my blog at bottom with more sources and description of individual images.
This is probably a Sogdian tomb. Interestingly, the man has a haplogroup that was widespread amongst the blue-eyed Mesolithic/Neolithic Western Hunter Gatherers (WHG are probably where blue eyes originated from) and the haplogroup is found today most prominently in Sami, Finns, and Estonians. His wife has a haplogroup found prominently amongst East Asians. Based on her East Asian origins and the inclusion of some Turkic-looking people in the tomb's artwork I would assume she was probably a Turk, herself. The long-haired men without halos (e.g. panel 4) are probably Turks, that was a typical appearance for them during this time period. Men from other surrounding populations such as the Sogdians, Huns, Tocharians, etc. typically kept shorter hair that didn't go past their shoulders. More info:
"The man buried in the tomb went by Yu Hong (Chinese: 虞弘; pinyin: Yú Hóng; Wade–Giles: Yü Hung; 533–592 AD), with Mopan (莫潘) as his courtesy name, who was a Central Asian, probably of Persian or Sogdian origin, and practiced Zoroastrianism. He had settled in Early Middle Period China during the Northern Qi, Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties. This tomb is so far the only archaeological find in the Central Plains region that reflects Central Asian (Western Regions) culture. The epitaph found in the tomb records that he was a noble of the city of Yü-ho-lin / Yuhelin (尉紇驎) in the mysterious Yu country (魚國), assumably for which he is named, because the two characters 虞 and 魚 are homophones.
According to the epitaph, Yu Hong started his career in service of the nomadic tribe at the time, known as Ruru. At the age of 13, he was posted as an emissary to Persia by the Khagan of Ruru, as well as Parthia, Tuyuhun and Yuezhi. Later he went on a mission to the Northern Qi, Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties. He served as chien-chiao sa-pao fu / jianjiao sabao fu (檢校薩保府, lit. “acting director of the office of Zoroastrian affairs”, or “Sogdian affairs”) during the Northern Zhou period. The term sa-pao / sabao (薩保) comes from the Sogdian s′rtp′w, means a “caravan leader”.
He had later served as a provincial governor in the Sui dynasty government, a chieftain of the Central Asian people who had settled in China during that period. Yu Hong died at the age of 59 in 592 AD. His wife survived him by six years, and was buried in the same grave in 598 AD.
A study on ancient DNA reveals that Yu Hong belonged to the haplogroup U5, one of the oldest western Eurasian-specific haplogroups, while his wife can be classified as haplogroup G, the type prevalent in East Asia.
The age of U5 is estimated at between 25,000 and 35,000 years old, roughly corresponding to the Gravettian culture. Approximately 11% of Europeans (10% of European-Americans) have some variant of haplogroup U5.
U5 was the predominant mtDNA of mesolithic Western Hunter Gatherers (WHG) [this is where blue eyes probably originated from].
U5 has been found in human remains dating from the Mesolithic in England, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, France and Spain. Neolithic skeletons (~7,000 years old) that were excavated from the Avellaner cave in Catalonia, northeastern Spain included a specimen carrying haplogroup U5.
Haplogroup U5 and its subclades U5a and U5b today form the highest population concentrations in the far north, among Sami, Finns, and Estonians. However, it is spread widely at lower levels throughout Europe. This distribution, and the age of the haplogroup, indicate individuals belonging to this clade were part of the initial expansion tracking the retreat of ice sheets from Europe around 10,000 years ago.
U5 was the main haplogroup of mesolithic European hunter gatherers. U haplogroups were present at 83% in European hunter gatherers before influx of Middle Eastern farmer and steppe Indo-European ancestry decreased its frequency to less than 21%.
Today, haplogroup G is found at its highest frequency in indigenous populations of the lands surrounding the Sea of Okhotsk. It is an East Asian haplogroup. Haplogroup G is one of the most common mtDNA haplogroups among modern Ainu, Siberian, Mongol, Tibetan and Central and North Asian Turkic peoples people (as well as among people of the prehistoric Jōmon culture in Hokkaidō). It is also found at a lower frequency among many other populations of East Asia, Central Asia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. However, unlike other mitochondrial DNA haplogroups typical of populations of northeastern Asia, such as haplogroup A, haplogroup C, and haplogroup D, haplogroup G has not been found among indigenous peoples of the Americas."
