Your anecdote about the four years old kid is a case in point for why the show shouldn't have the conflict that it does.

Even if all the messed up morality and deconstructive elements were on purpose, they shouldn't be in a show for such a young demographic and especially not in the manner they're presented. Avatar is a perfect example of how you can tackle difficult subjects in a kid's show. Namely: the characters solve the overt aspects of the problem within the episode, and if they don't it's still acknowledged as a problem.

This "subtle deconstruction" has no place in a show with this demographic, for the same reason you would not let a five year old read dark romance.

And it's not even good dark romance! They don't lean in to the messed up elements nearly enough for the story to have the same appeal of dark romance and I'm saying this as someone who absolutely loves messed up characters and relationships. Marinette would need to be written as a villain protagonist in order to make this a satisfying storyline and we all know the writers don't have the balls to do that.

So all they end up with is a half assed trip to unfortunate implications land that isn't going to be fun for anyone and will make for some horrid messaging for the main demographic of impressionable kids.

Yeah, like, at this point Miraculous isn't suitable for children. Full stop. The lessons are rancid, the morality is in the pits, and even just the stories are difficult to follow and inconsistent.

Like, the writers can't commit to anything. Miraculous’ wide mass appeal was reached through not committing to any one idea but throwing enough things out that people could think they're seeing hints of a story they want to see. This is why the writers don't actually want to change anything about how the show works, because the formula is so perfectly non-committal. Because of this, I don't believe Miraculous is going to pull the rug from under us and reveal to us that it wasn't actually protagonist-centered morality, but a deconstruction of protagonist-centered morality.

Even so, if the writers decided to actually change course to save face and pretend they totally intended this to be a deconstruction all along, that has no place in a children's show. You need to understand what's being deconstructed to get the deconstruction at all, and small kids learning emotional regulation aren't that familiar with literary theory concepts or story tropes. They're still learning that stories have a beginning, middle and end, so expecting them to wait 20-60 episodes for the resolution that “hey, Marinette lying to her boyfriend about his dad and his human nature makes her a bad hero” is a tall order.

And yeah, I have seen some Miraculous stans try to defend Lovesquare by claiming it’s actually meant to be a dark romance, which, like, has no place in a kids’ show period. Kids don’t have enough experience to understand what they’re being shown or find it appealing for its own sake.

And exactly, I have enjoyed my fair share of dark romances and codependent relationships. I ate that stuff up while reading Gideon the Ninth this spring, and Miraculous' “dark romance” isn’t appealing to me at all. They pretend like the messed up parts of the romance are actually cute or just fodder to give Marinette something to be upsette about, how tragic that she abuses her boyfriend, that’s so sad for her. How sweet that Adrien has been abused into not having any wants or needs outside of pleasing Marinette. That’s not spicy. It’s as half-assed as everything about this show.

idk if this is a hot take necessarily but I will only be satisfied with 2o2g if it is mediocre at best. I want a cheesy action movie with gratuitous explosions. yeah good writing and acting and directing would be nice or whatever but this way I am pleasantly surprised if it happens and not disappointed if it doesn’t. but really I would be thrilled if it is your run of the mill action movie and nothing all that special.

i'm at the exact same place to be honest my no 1 hope is that it is either watchable or so bad it's good. if we're being completely honest, my personal take is that tog 1 was also.... mediocre at best, and i say this as someone who latched onto it like a baby bird. it absolutely has compelling characters and concepts but oftentimes those concepts aren't quite followed through fully, which i think is what contributes to it being such a good piece of media for fan content because there's so much you can explore that the movie doesn't. and admittedly it only has 2 hours. tog 2 has been through so many reshoots and crew changes and the like, plus rucka is writing again and the screenplay is easily the weakest part of the film. it was never particularly well written. if we're being real. the performances are solid, because the cast are all very good at their jobs, but the dialogue is awkward enough that there's some lines that still come out strangely. i like the general approach gina had when directing, some of the stuff she altered / brought to it is compelling but visually / stylistically it ranges from ok to. well. not good. we all make fun of how grey it looks. i say all this with all the love in my heart. but building off of tog 1 as an admittedly pretty solid foundation with an added villain, added lore, more characters and less breathing room (100 mins vs 120, which is still wild to me), i fear we have a Mess on our hands. so i have given up hoping for something good and am instead hoping for something fun. if quynh doesn't walk away from an explosion with sunglasses on i don't want it

You know I’m gonna be honest, I kind of love the fact that in Transformers fanon, pretty much any Transformer can get pregnant or get someone pregnant regardless of gender, and due to it being such an accepted part of the fandom, you don’t have to make up scenarios so that it can happen with two characters of the same gender, like one of them being trans, or Omegaverse, or some genderswap shenanigans, or the characters are in some way not entirely human so you can give them different biology that allows this

I mean technically Transformers does fall into that latter category, but it applies to all the characters, and it’s so normalized that it’s not something you have to go out of your way to explain (unless it’s to explain it to the human characters, but that’s different)

I love it, it’s beautiful. And honestly, I’m gonna be really sad whenever I inevitably leave the Transformers fandom and I’m gonna have to go back to fics where this isn’t the case. Or whenever I remember that oh right, that isn’t how it works in real life, or in most fandoms

I am 5 seconds from writing an essay on why till was never actually in love with mizi and he in fact just idolizes her but wasn't able to really tell the difference between those things because every show of love he grew up seeing (mizi and sua, and how ivan acted towards till) was somewhere between romantic feelings and worship so obviously he'd take one look at his own feelings of "I like mizi for all these reasons and think she's great and I want to be near her" and think yes this is romantic attraction. of course. naturally

yeah this is me projecting onto till but also it makes SENSE. like this fucker grew up around mizi literally calling sua her god. why do we think he's going to understand the difference between idolization and worship and actually being in love with someone. he grew up with ivan chasing him and only having eyes for him. why do we think he's going to understand the difference between wanting to be noticed and actually being in love with someone. mizi experiences her love for sua as sua being her god, the center of her life, absolutely everything, someone who owns her heart and is her whole world. and till probably hears her say this. and he decides that because his life centers on mizi (and wanting validation from her), he must be in love too

the way he is about mizi reminds me soooo much of myself when i was younger. I'd pick a person to latch onto and ignore everyone else and want them to look at me and talk to me and treat them saying my name as the best moment of my life and think that was love (it was actually hyperfixating on people and also I don't have romantic attraction)

its also the. the fuckin. the error no better options line in unknown. till needs someone to latch onto, someone to chase, someone to worship. everything sucks. everything absolutely sucks in his life. he needs someone to cling to and mizi is the person his eyes land on

I do. I know some people think either he wouldn't have or he would've missed so that's why the writers had him shoot Dorian instead, but mmmmmm no, I don't personally think so. I like to think that if he had taken the shot, his shaky hands would've caused him to shoot her fatally.

Mostly because I'm already so normal about the fact that of the Ericson crew, Marlon and Louis are the only ones with a body count. Well, that we know of, but shown to us in the game, at least. Plus, we know it's Louis' first kill.

Like yeah, Clementine and AJ become part of the crew and they have bigger body counts, and if we're counting indirect kills caused by actions, then Tenn has a count... and I guess everyone has blood on their hands for blowing up the boat... but I'm talking about killed directly with a weapon like....... I lied, I'm not normal about that at all, Louis and Marlon are the ones who have killed someone in Louis' route. I'm also not normal about the fact that Louis kills Dorian and then even as he's clearly in shock, he tries to go with Clementine to get AJ, and then later on when they talk about it, he says it feels like bile but not quite and he's glad he has it in him to do it.... listen, listen, listen... I'm obsessed with that.

Anyway, so if Louis shot Minerva, I think he would've accidentally killed her and can you imagine? He's already enough of a mess after killing the woman who pinned him down and tried to cut his finger off [or succeeded] but he knew Minerva, they were friends before the twins were taken. Even Violet couldn't kill her even though that would've been the smarter thing to do, and we know thanks to meta knowledge that killing her would've saved lives, but Violet couldn't, and I don't think Louis would intentionally either.

Speaking of Violet, if Louis killed Minerva, I hate to think about what that would've done to Vi. I think she might've actually left at that point, like what was planned before it got changed to her being burned. I don't think she would've attacked Louis over it, though, like yeah she attacked Clementine in the cell but Louis? I don't know, but I don't think so just because it's Louis and he'd be a mess about it anyway.

Though if he did kill her, it would be a neat parallel to draw... y'know, because Louis forgave AJ for killing Marlon even though he was pissed and heartbroken, and Violet was annoyed with him the entire time... but could she ever forgive Louis for killing Minerva? Y'know? We already have a similar parallel with AJ shooting Tenn, but still.

If Clementine killed Minerva in that moment, though, then I could see Violet attacking her since in her eyes, Clem proved her right.

So yeah, I get why they added the Dorian kill to his route. It adds another compelling element to Louis as a character, but we also need Minerva alive for episode 4; Louis can't kill her, he can't miss, and he's not going to stay with her because we need Violet to stay on the boat and him to be on shore for all routes.
