New Comics!

Didn't get around to this last month, but we're getting back to this, baby!

Birds of Prey #12 -- Sophie Campbell's art in this was indeed very cute. Plotwise, hmmm, I keep coming back to the fact that Kelly Thompson writes fun comics. And this was a fun issue! There were a lot of fun moments and sight gags. The cartoon/chibi designs of the characters were all excellent. I liked Babs' big cartoon glasses (and I really liked her outfit!) and Cass' ears, and how Vixen and Megara's powers were drawn. I do feel like the cute art does make it harder for me to take the plot seriously though, when I'm expecting something more like Tiny Titans from the vibes. Overall though, I'm going to be curious to reread this arc once it's complete and see if it reads smoother because right now it feels simultaneously too fast and like there's not much going on each issue.

It feels like we're hopping too quickly between all these places and the constantly changing art, while a fun concept is starting to make it harder to feel settled. There are a lot of characters in this arc and it feels like Thompson is having trouble balancing them. These past few issues have felt very repetitive in that they jump through the portal, adjust to the new changes, go beat up stuff, and jump through another portal, cut to the real world for a couple pages while Maps and assorted characters stand around. Right now it's feeling like it would've been nicer if this plot was more focused. Does it really need 5 issues? I'm wondering if this will read smoother in trade.

I think my last comment is that both this and the last issue have a sequence where one character's like 'I have an idea' and then we cut to the birds executing the idea without really explaining what they want to get out of the portal. I get that it's to build suspense, but it's kind of frustrating to be hit by it twice in a row. I'm not sure how to articulate this, but I feel like there's got to be a middle ground between telling the audience nothing and telling them everything.

Shazam #14 -- I think part of the reason why I'm finding myself more eh about Birds of Prey is that I read Shazam right after this and it just feels like Campbell is doing a much stronger job of juggling the different pieces and all the different characters she brings together in this issue in a way that's engaging and really feels like it's moving the plot forward. In this issue we've got Freddy, Billy (and also the Captain!), Mary, and Uncle Dudley and Mary gets a more supporting role, but it feels like there's a good amount of focus on each character.

Freddy's POV so much fun. He's over here like 'I am going to talk my way out of this situation' and the results from that are very entertaining. Uncle Dudly is also fun and there's a good set-up and payoff in this issue with him. I liked what we saw of the continued conflict between Billy and the Captain and I am here for the invasion of the Submen as next issue promised. It's just really fun.

King Kull the Beastman was the warlord ruler of the Submen in prehistoric times.  He ended up in suspended animation in a cavern until he was revived in the modern era.  He attempted to reconquer the world but was thwarted by Captain Marvel (Shazam).  The two would battled on many subsequent occasions and King Kull would become a founding member of The Monster Society of Evil.  The villain additionally battled The Justice League as well as Stargirl and Cyclone.  He first appeared in Captain Marvel Adventures (1951).

The 21th April: direct men's rights action in St.Petersburg, Russia

First men's rights mass action in the former Soviet Union: 90 (including 9 our activists) participants on the protest against military draft

The time and place of the meeting were defined in advance. 9 activists of Masculist Initiative* split into two groups, after that we moved to the protest rally place in the center of St.Petersburg. The first group – with organized car transportation – arrived earlier for safety reasons: to assess the situation. No reasons for concern were found, nevertheless we left two of our activists outside of the rally place to control and check the situation. (There are a lot of far-right groups in Russia, they aggressively oppose MRM and GLBTQ+ activists). The second group arrived a little bit later, it joined the first one. We moved into an impromptu isolated rally zone that reminded us not of a place of free speech and activist manifestation, but of a holding pen. Policemen checked the contests of our posters and let us in. (In Russia everything is bad with freedom of speech and freedom of assembly). We overheard them speaking: one policeman said, we should have switched to contract army long time ago.

Those who took part in the protest rally – about 90 people – started to form groups in front of the stage. Four activists joined us – three “undecided” and one from Yabloko (one of the biggest liberal political parties in opposition to the Russian government). One of protesters was recruited by us.

We took the most visible places (for some of our members had an activist experience in the past), those with posters moved nearer to the stage. Due to that, we were later considered to be one of the most influential political force there. Our slogans had the same destiny of success.

We were pleased to see how the majority of speakers made their accent on the male sex of conscripts, as a sign of gender-based discrimination. It’s not just about people to be registered as conscripts, to be obliged to military service, to be bullied, humiliated and murdered. It’s about men who face all of this. It is surely an important point, if we truly intend to get rid of conscription slavery. We repeatedly observed how tradcons won the debate, because their opponents did not have enough internal strength or will to use men’s rights discourse as an argument base. And exactly the opposite – tradcons lost the debate, if someone started talking about gender inequality against men.

Unfortunately, comrade Zamarov’s speech, which we frankly consider to be the most powerful one, was not in a live webcast due to technical problems. Nevertheless, we have a recorded version of it.

There was an episode of an elderly woman (who surely did not have to face military service by herself) “speaking” and scolding those men who do not wish to die for governmental elite’s interests. During her “speech” the microphone stopped working. We are not sure, whether it was done intended or by accident. We did not remain silent and shouted “Down with that!”, “Go away!”: we respect free speech, but insults combined with hate speech are unacceptable. Our pro-government opponents used this occasion to present her as a victim of demonic “submen”. Exact embodiment of pragmatic tactic – just start insulting people, avoiding any form of responsibility by hiding behind your sex and age. Fortunately, this mad being ended her bad stand-up, policemen got her out of there.

“This protest rally is first of all a limited time period to publicly express minorities’ issues and positions. Free speech is a possibility to express one’s opinion in a correct form. It’s not about people making us silent. The woman wasn’t impolitely made to shut her mouth. It’s her who tried to make us remain silent, invisible.”

There was one more provoking man, holding a poster. The following was written: “Take your hands off the military draft!”. When asked about whether he ever served himself, misandrist responded in the negative. His following destiny is unknown.

On the whole, we are satisfied with our action and will take part in the Coalition against conscription.

Thankfully nobody was detained during the rally.

Opinion attacks of the majority was not long in coming: comments in St.Petersburg’s online groups were full of misandrists, overreacting at the bare fact of our existence. Famous Russian tradcon Vitaly Milonov didn’t make anyone wait a long time: he named men, who are not willing to secure his privileged ass, miserable. He also lied about radical improvements in the service conditions of conscripts. (He never was a soldier).

Putin supporters considered the protest rally a failure unanimously. But if they’re right, where does all this stink come from? Armchair experts with questionable competence came from nowhere suddenly, building their message on Russia “becoming weaker”, mixing contract military with mercenaries, considering the action against slavery and war to be a spit on the cheek of our forefathers (who actually tried to make a world without enslavement and wars). Judge yourself whose point makes more sense: an elderly woman went to one of us and said that we are fighting for a right cause. Her only son dies in Afghanistan.

We witnessed a new wave of archness and aspersion from one of pseudo-masculist communities (pro-patriarchal Men's Movement (Muzhskoe Dvizhenie) and pro-paedophilic Intelligent Masculism (Razumnyi Maskulizm)), which is better known for its hatred directed towards “Checkmate, scum”. Our haters’ leader stated that we used this chance for only one purpose: to look more important in comparison to his weak texts and ugly one-man pickets.

Other communities considering themselves to be masculist preferred not to comment on this news. Recognition came from an unexpected place for some people: the feminist community EQUALITY supported our first massive action – the first one of such an importance in Russia’s history.

* Masculist Initiative (MI) — men's rights organization from St.Petersburg, also standing against toxic masculinity, homophobia, acephobia, transphobia, racism, fascism and pro-patriarchal communities. At the same time, MI is an autonomous group, independent of feminism and so-called “SJWs”.
