Summer has arrived, Loudly sing, Cuckoo! Seeds grow and meadows bloom And the forest springs anew, Sing, Cuckoo! The ewe bleats after the lamb, The cow lows after the calf. The bullock jumps, the stag cavorts, Merrily sing, Cuckoo! Cuckoo, cuckoo, well you sing, cuckoo; Nor will you ever stop now.
A Medieval song by an unknown English monk. He was apparently excited by summer's arrival.
Well count me in. Cavorting sounds like fun (see beetles above).
Photos from a bike ride this past Sunday on the Mon River Trail.

...It gives me an unreasonable amount of joy to think that at least one of my ancestors probably also swept their kitchen while singing Sumer Is Icumen In...
... loudly, off-key, in a game approximation of the neighbours' language they don't speak, annoying their friends and loved ones

Saw The Wicker Man (1973)
Tumblr media
Spoilers below but you should watch it, it has become one of my favorite movies.
Adored seeing this on the big screen. Lots of close-ups, lots of pain and humor much more visible. In Hardy's world of almost inescapable diffuse, fuzzy light (most intense during the shots of the eucharist, but almost omnipresent), the shots that most stood out to me are those in real darkness. The nighttime orgy, the photograph development room, the darkness under the hood of the hobbyhorse, some of the shots running through the cave, all interrupt the horrific daydream of Summerisle with a concrete counterpart, a physical reality composed of darkness. This darkness, which Howie does not desire (as a Christian who wishes to live in the light of God) and cannot achieve (even his bedroom at night is poisoned by the light of unreality developed by the island's inhabitants), can only come truly in the final shot, after he has died, neither reincarnated nor resurrected, as the light of the sun sinks beneath the horizon.

Earlier tonight, someone on my feed posted a poll about what the oldest song you can sing is, and just how old it is.
This was the first thing that sprang to mind for me. It's been going around and around and around and around in my head ever since.
So: here, have a 13th century earworm. Good luck getting rid of it. Toodles!

Our big tree on the corner is leafing out, maybe for the last time. I stood under it a few days ago, looking up. Birds were getting settled for sleep, and the branches framed the crescent moon perfectly in the twilight. I felt a deep sort of communion with Beltanes past, standing in the circle with my coven, looking up through the trees in the gloaming periwinkle sky and seeing the stars come out. I will ask the tree if it will let me take a live branch for a wand soon. I want to be able to feel that connection always. I also hope the honeysuckle along our fence will come back, so i might ask it for a branch as well. I don't like losing these friends.
I still haven’t lit my Beltane altar. I think I’ll do it Tuesday, which is the astrological date this year. We did go out for a nice meal, though, and that was definitely a good way to celebrate. It isn't much, but I think it's all I have the energy for right now.
May and early June is one of my favourite times of the year, and I’m so happy to shed the wild winter we had for warmer days. I think my summer spirit divebombed me last night when we came home - I've never had Blue Jay come to me before, even though we always have plenty of bachelor boys yelling at one another. Let's hope it doesn't mean I’m going to start yelling at passers-by!

We reached the summer solstice somehow, so here's a deep cut for my weekly #StupidAccordionTricks series, the shortest video I've ever recorded and also the oldest song, nearly 800 years of age! Stand back, #SumerIsIcumenIn

Arceus - Out of all your achievements, which one makes you the proudest?
And!
Meloetta - Favorite song. NOW.
Arceus ask first... The one that probably meant the most was beating up what was apparently an Ultra Beast with a little help from the champ in Kaskade, but what I think made me proudest was managing to befriend and capture Jangle. He has helped me in so many ways.
Meloetta ask... Right now, I'm listening to Sumer Is Icumen In: the oldest Galarian song with lyrics that exists, giving a glimpse into the early language and customs.
My favourite though is Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen.
