I don't like Rebirth because I think it really strips a lot of agency from Aphmau.
In season one of Diaries it starts with Aphmau standing in a forest before seeing Vylad in the distance and chasing him to Phoenix Drop, this opening builds intrigue by making one wonder who Vylad is what he was doing. One initially doesn't question what Aphmau was doing in the forest, but later on the season when she states that she doesn't remember her parents, in makes you interested in her past and what led her to that moment. This also shows her ability to act for herself, although she finds Phoenix Drop by following Vylad, he wasn't directly in front of her nor did he tell her to follow him. She saw him and decided to chase him, this was a choice she made.
In Rebirth we are shown Vylad place that stick he got given by Lucinda's mom and summon Aphmau. This wasn't as interesting as the original because it drops the slower and more intriguing style of the original to instead just show you the thing that was vaguely hinted towards for two seasons. This also makes Aphmau have less agency then in the original. She doesn't notice Vylad and decide to follow him, no she lays there unconscious while Vylad has a cool moment(Vylad's my favorite Lil guy I just think this is a bad way to introduce your main character). Instead of running into Phoenix Drop, she lays there asleep and then some men drag her there while she's barely dressed.
In the original she is a capable fighter, possess good life skills, and survival abilities. Although she cannot recall her past she is capable. She's smart, she just doesn't know the lore. In Rebirth she's a bumbling fool.
In Diaries, she helps the people of Phoenix Drop and acts as a capable leader, so they make her lord. In Rebirth peo0le mistakenly think some guy think she's hot, so they pretend she's lord.
In Diaries Aphmau move a number of people into Phoenix Drop, in Rebirth, at least one of them, Donna, already lives there.

Hp and Narnia fans I summon you to talk to you all.
Now I know we as a fandom have fancasted the Pevensie children as the founders of Hogwarts but what if we changed it a bit.
Now hear me out, we originally casted Peter Pevensie as Godric Gryffindor, Susan Pevensie as Rowena Ravenclaw, Edmund Pevensie as Salazar Slytherin, and Lucy Pevensie as Helga Hufflepuff and everyone either agreed or disagreed about their house placement.
But I think I shall bring a new idea forth. Allow me to introduce the idea
Lucinda "Lucy" Gryffindor, daughter of Godric Gryffindor
Edmund Ravenclaw, son of Rowena Ravenclaw and brother of Helena Ravenclaw
Susannah "Susan" Slytherin, daughter of Salazar Slytherin
And last but certainly not least
Peter Hufflepuff, son of Helga Hufflepuff
Think about this for a second.
The children of the founders of Hogwarts

Hi so I had ✨️thoughts✨️ on a concept for a stf episode/scenario/etc that I remembered tangentially related to your Papa story (so good btw) (also this may end up being long I'm so sorry)
It'd most likely be something geared towards an older audience (like not kindergartners lol, something for the spinoff whenever that happens maybe? Idk what the target audience for it will be considering we dont know anything about it) and framed as either a Father's Day or Halloween episode (I don't think we got any Father's day eps other than the one episode I hate with a burning passion)
Basically, Sofia is going through her things and finds something of Birk's, whether it be some sort of sailing gear or clothing or a gift or an image of them together (idk it could be anything, we know borderline nothing about this man) and she's hit with what I'm going to call the Rose Quartz effect. Missing a parent who you barely/don't know, having unanswered questions that won't/can't be answered, having all these conflicting feelings about this one person and feeling all of them yet none of them at the same time. Losing a parent at such a young age is rough and was just the tip on the iceberg of Sofia growing up far faster than she needed to.
Where am I going with this? Well, because of all of these unanswered questions and difficult emotions, Sofia wants to talk to her deceased father. Ghosts exist canonically in the series, who's to say they can't be summoned? Maybe she gets help from Cedric, or she finds a book on her own, or maybe she even gets help from Lucinda and the witches or that one ghost from the Ghostly Gala episode who's name I can't remember but I definitely had a crush on as a kid.
The main conflict of the episode would probably be all of these internal conflicting desires for Sofia, possibly also Miranda's own feelings about her belated husband (is this how you use belated? Idk lol).
Regardless of how it happens, the episode ends/has its final act with Sofia summoning her father, Birk. He sees how much his little girl has grown up, how brave and kind and smart she is. She gets to see and say goodbye to her father a final time and get proper closure. Maybe throw in a line or two there from Birk on just how grown up Sofia is, almost (definitely) too grown up for a pre-teen/adolescent girl.
The message of the episode would probably be something about grief and the process of it all, how it's okay to be angry that someone you love is gone, how talking about it opens old wounds but helps to heal them. It's bittersweet.
But yeah definitely not something suited for what the original demographic for stf was. Of course important to talk about, but with what I'm talking about it'd probably go over such young heads.
Sorry that this is so long! I had to get all my thoughts out and it got pretty rambley lmao
This is such a good idea for an episode!
I agree that Birk would be disheartened at how grown up Sofia is, obviously he'd know she's grown since she was five, but she's too far ahead, and not in the natural way that some children just emotionally mature quicker than their peers.
I think even though it's been a long time and Sofia doesn't really have anything to miss as she hardly knows life with him, she still really misses Birk, like I said in chapter two of "Papa..." some days she just wants to be by herself and lay in bed grieving him. I wish the show brought it up, especially for the potential children watching who lost one of their parents like Sofia. This would be a really good episode for that reason alone, honestly.
Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if this spin off went a more mature route, considering how a good deal of the fans are teens and adults, and there's going to be people watching who grew up on the show and are now older just out of curiosity. If I remember rightly something similar happened with miraculous ladybug, they started making the episodes more mature after the creators realised the main audience was teens and adults, not their original target audience. I've seen Craig interact with lots of older fans so he definitely knows they're a big audience!

Dollar Bin #43:
Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music
Tumblr media
My famous brother repeatedly pushes a few choice artists on me, artists I've resisted for years. After all, I figure I've got plenty of time to feel my way into The Feelies, plenty of time to flip on the Television, and plenty of time to consider a serving of Cale (as in JJ; John is obviously a long time given in my pantheon of greatness).
Ry Cooder comes up in these discussions.
"He's an amazing guitar player," my brother argues. Yeah, that doesn't sell me. So is (or at least was) Eric Clapton. But ever since he left The White Room he seems bummerful tonight.
"But he plays like a zillion instruments!" continues Senior Doom and Gloom. Give me a break bro: Stephen Stills regularly credits himself with guitars (always plural), bass, piano, organ, vibes, Moog programming, Clavier, orchestration, conduction, deduction, obstruction, destruction and cowbells - plural cowbells.
But my brother's third statement always sells me on Cooder: "Yeah, but he's totally weird though - his records are nuts." Now that helps. Nuts is good in the Dollar Bin.
And then my famous brother layers on icing for the hotcakes he's hawking: "And remember dude, Neil Young opened for Cooder for the Bottom Line Honey Slides show." Now we're talking! Tell Neil to cook me up some cheap, finely chopped grass so I can listen to some Ry Cooder.
And have him add the tasty morsel that Cooder shows up prominently and with convincing thoughtfulness in Linda Ronstadt's straightforward but occasionally beautiful bioflick The Sound of My Voice. Then I'll move Ry Cooder onto my Dollar Bin Yes list.
Well, all that went down, so this summer I picked out three Cooder titles, each for a single salty buck. Let's consider the first one I came across...
I have to say, Chicken Skin Music's cover makes it look like it hardly merits my hard earned dollar. If I wanted to see cartoon skeletons, or for that matter, any kind of cartoon whatsoever, fornicating with cartoon ladies in cartoon dirt I'd be, well, an altogether different person.
But I dropped the needle anyway this week and my first impressions were not too favorable. If I wanted a white person singing Leadbelly, complete with repetitive use of the n-word, I'd summon Lucinda Williams. I guess. But I won't be making that summons: we're almost 50 years past the Night of the Hurricane, people; the n-word's use is hereby bestowed only to Black people, and they can do with it what they wish.
Overall, the tone of Chicken Skin Music is weird alright, I'll give my brother that much. Around 1999 I spent a single night at Hussongs in Encinada, pounding Pacificos and getting way into the Gringo action. The place was nuts: it was the closest thing I ever want to see to an actual orgy - only no one was actually naked or making love, thankfully; everything was just way out of control. This album was probably playing in the background.
Plus there's an apocryphal story about my father spending a night in Ensenada jail at some point in the late 60's for breaking into that same bar via a bathroom window; the whole thing sounds like a bunch of bunk; but listening to Ry Cooder duet with a drunken accordion on He'll Have to Go makes me believe my dad's wacko through the window story and assume it was Cooder who gave him the boost in.
youtube
But the album's greatest moment precedes that track and features, allegedly, Laurence Fishburne on vocals. Yeah, that Laurence Fishburne: the guy who was (this is actually true!) 15 years old when this record was recorded and had, concurrently, lied about his age to land a role in Apocalypse Now. (Just think about that: when I was 15 I regularly wore a Lenny Kravitz T-Shirt and I couldn't tell the difference between a peace sign and the Mercedes logo; in other words, I was a childish dope; meanwhile a young Larry Fishburne spent his 15th year on the planet playing an adult soldier a nutjob film on the other side of the world.)
And, supposedly, Fishburne was singing on this record at that very same time! That, or someone is having a ball on the record's Wikipedia page. Let me know if you figure out whether or not the whole thing is actually true. And if it is true, how does one go about working with Cooder and Copola simultaneously on opposite ends of the earth - all while being 15? Perhaps the Matrix helped make it all happen, after all, Fishburne uses that film's version of the force or whatever to secure his sunglasses to his face with no temples. (Temples are the name of the curved sticks that connect your lenses and frames to your ears and face).
Tumblr media
And what's with the mini me in that image above? I know: maybe there are actually two Laurence Fishburns out there: the big guy from the movies and a second, tiny version of him who sings on Ry Cooder records!
Anyway, tell me if you hear Larry in the mix here; this song is great!
youtube
Sweet huh? Why isn't the rest of Side 1 this soulful and earnest? If Fishburne had sang this song to Martin Sheen early on in Apocolypse's production maybe our future President Bartlet would have chilled the heck out, not gotten so drunk and not broken everything he could get his hands on in that hotel room; altogether it looks like a pretty lousy way to spend your 36th birthday.
Tumblr media
But Sheen had demons to exorcise I guess, and apparently Cooder did too because he spends the entirety of Chicken Skin Music's B Side in a bizarre Hawaiian funk, performing songs like Stand By Me and Goodnight Irene like he's the last guy standing in an about-to-be-tornedo-struck tiki dive bar. He just keeps tossing off cheap mai tais and refusing to leave, convinced the paper umbrellas cluttering his drinks will defend him against the impending elements. They don't.
But is Chicken Skin Music ultimately worth my buck? Hell yeah! I'll listen to it whenever I'm breaking into Hussong's via the Matrix.

~The Descent Down Below~
(A/N - Hopefully, this attempt sticks. This is actually attempt number 2 of writing this original fic, and we can actually see this one to the end. This was actually based upon a concept i had when i was younger to give another OC an attempt at a relationship; i decided that, "Yes. But it will not be easy for her. She shall go through Hell and back to get it"--and thus this was birthed.
Fair warning to you as well, the following fic will be containing a LOT of themes unsuitable for the faint of heart, varying from violence of varying kinds to gore and much, much worse. Trigger warnings will be placed in the beginning after the Author's Note.)
Tumblr media
-Really, Cel? A ouija board? We’re not kids anymore; why’d you pull this old thing out?-
“Humor me, Josie. It was one’a th’ first things i played, growing as a witch in trainin’...an’ one of the first magically inclined tools i really ever played with as a fledgling. A ouija board can be quite fun an’ thrillin’ IF ye know all th’ stops.”, Celeste responded, straightening the cloth atop the dining room table.
The Valentina residence’s dining room was lit by only the light of candles, giving way to an almost romantic, comforting ambience. While Celeste set up for the ritual, with Josephine burning off white sage and rosemary, Lucinda watched skeptically as all of this took place. It wasn’t necessarily the first time she’d ever taken part in a ouija board ritual. It wasn’t so much that she minded being there…but something about the entire act felt so…tasteless. Tasteless, yet also so simple and quite honestly, a bore. It felt like something a teenager would do at a sleepover out of boredom and for a quick, cheap thrill. Still, she wasn’t about to question it, since—as much as she hated to admit it—Celeste was definitely right about one thing: with the correct experience and technique, a ouija board could actually quite interesting.
Bringing the glass of wine to her dark red lips, blue eyes watched carefully as the middle oldest of the three brought out the board she was talking about. Something about the damn thing shot chills down her spine, which...said quite a lot, but also, raised questions.
“You...played with this thing...? I hope you know NOW that this thing is no toy, Celeste. The board has been the subject to those who fiddle with becoming a demon’s plaything for centuries. It is why whole slumber parties end up dead by daylight.”
“Well, of course. It took...one good time o’ summoning somethin’ i shouldn’t have t’ fully grasp the concept. I wouldn’t be havin’ Jo burn all this sage an’ rosemary IF i didn’t know, Lucy. Have faith.”
The woman scoffed, “Here is where the misunderstanding lies, dear. I have plenty of faith in you; after all, had I not, I would have been the one to lead and not you. I just don’t think this is a safe idea. Even with all the precautions you’re taking...don’t you see that even with all this, there’s a chance that something could still go wrong?”
“Maybe so...but give it a chance. If something goes wrong...all of us are capable of protecting ourselves.”
With that, they placed the last incense in its holder and Josephine took her seat at the table, along with the other two. Celeste sat at the center, between Lucinda and Josephine, staring down at the swarthy mahogany board. Despite how glossy and well-kept it looked, it was ancient, having been in Celeste’s possession for centuries.
A stiletto-tipped hand rested gently on the planchette, and all three pairs of hands were sitting there with hers. All was silent, waiting for Celeste’s lead. With a clarifying breath, she then spoke the following phrase in Latin —
“Intrate hoc sanctum, omnes spiritus de ultra. Rogamus loqui tecum.”
(Enter this sanctum, all ye spirits from beyond. We ask to speak with you.)
With that, the room shuddered and grew darker, leaving only but the lone gentle light of the candles as a guide for them to see. It was then it felt as if they were being watched by eyes they could not see, although from what direction, none were sure of. Once she was certain of the surrounding atmosphere, Celeste spoke once more.
“...Is anyone here? Speak now, or leave us in the dark forever more.”
As if responding, a fourth pair of hands joined theirs. While Celeste didn’t flinch, Josephine hissed in surprise while Lucinda gasped, growling curses in a demonic tongue. Then, with a light force, it moved their hands over to its response.
>YES.<
They were no longer alone, and so Celeste’s gaze remained straight ahead, focused on the empty seat where the force seemed to stem from. “Might i know your name, strange one? We mean you no harm. We only wish to talk. Nothing more than such.”, she replied politely, a smile curling at deep terracotta red lips.
A pause before the entity gave its answer. >ICARUS.<
-Oh, like the kid in Greek mythos...probably died because of his own damn hubris. Seen it before. I mean…man is known for the primary trait that caused the fall of The Morningstar straight to Hell. What else is new?-
Lucinda shot a scathing glance. If her eyes could kill, Josephine would’ve been dead 10 times over. “Josie--! That was quite rude!”
-Luce, you an’ i both know humans are some arrogant bastards. You’re surprised at this because...?-
“Both of you, HUSH. Now...Icarus, was it? Beautiful name, by th’ way...may i, if it isn’t too much...may i…inquire of when it was that ye passed...?”
A few more moments passed by, and then, slowly…the phrase was spelled out in front of them.
>1896. DIED BY BOARD.<
Board...
Did he mean...a ouija board? It would’ve been made since the invention of the board was about 5, maybe even 6 years prior to the death of this poor man. Maybe he was trying to contact someone, and it went wrong? That was the only thing that Celeste could properly come up with that may have been the cause of death for the soul she was speaking to. It saddened her; just what made him consider using such a thing was a good idea?
...Should she even ask that?
“1896, hm...? And you say you died from the...board, was it? Do you mean...a ouija board, love? Can...can you be a bit more precise? How? I c’n think o’ quite a few ways one’s end might come wi’ ouija boards.”
>TRICKED. THEY LIED. POSSESSED.<
-GREAT! A demon-possessed man! Already off to a wonderful start, Cellie!-, Josephine sent sarcastically.
“Well...this is jus’ from what we’re able t’ get from th’ board. It’s like clipped textin’; y’ know how when an older person’s learnin’ t’ text an’ they can jus’ get a few words down at a time? ‘S like that for older spirits. I actually know a way t’ make speakin’ t’ Icarus easier...but ‘s a bit more complicated than some sage an’ incantation. This is where y’ gotta get a bit more...personal.”
With that, she reached from her left pocket a small athame: something she always used for when she needed blood for a ritual, should it call for it. And this night, it did...
“For this t’ work, i need th’ blood o’ the one who wants t’ see ‘im. Not much. Jus’ a pinch...there’s a reason they made this board of th’ material it’s made of. For purposes such as this...”, and with that explanation, Celeste stuck the tip of the blade into the tip of her right pointer finger and pressed until blood rushed from the small nick.
She then passed the blade to Josephine, who seemed more than eager to be doing something regarding the use of blood. She gladly took the knife and slid the blade across her own fingers to draw a fair bit of blood, before handing the somewhat dirty knife to Lucinda with a wide grin. Out of the two, Lucinda looked the slightest bit disturbed by the act. However, she didn’t want to be the only one to not be able to see the spirit they were speaking to, and so she followed.
Shakily, she took the knife and pressed the tip into her palm, letting the crimson red liquid trail down her fingers until it reached the very tips. There, she touched the board with the others, completing the circle of blood that pooled about the planchette glass. The piece glinted and emanated a soft light at first, and Celeste allowed her eyes to flutter shut as her entire body tingled. The feeling of static electricity filled the room, descending upon the other two who had resigned themselves to the act.
A drowsiness filled the both of them, until suddenly, there was a small lapse of consciousness.
Once it all came flooding back to them, it was then they could hear a voice. A man’s...it was soft-spoken and mild, but sweet and one neither woman expected to hear fill their ears. When Celeste’s eyes then opened again, she was greeted to the sight of a well-dressed man from what she assumed was the late Victorian era. With mousy brown hair and wide-open, unseeing white eyes that had the lightest tint of a powder blue, it was jarring to behold.
He definitely appeared the part of an undead ghost, with eyes that looked as if he’d seen things no man should have ever had to lay witness to, and a general look as if he’d not been sleeping well. He also looked fairly young, and if one had to guess, he appeared to be roughly younger than Celeste but also older than Josephine.
Something about this brought about the Mother Hen in both Celeste and Lucinda, but neither woman dared to show this. Instead, it manifested in sheer curiosity. Josephine only stared back, with only the opposite. Disinterest and even slight amusement in the other’s reactions...a smirk curled at the corner of her mouth.
He was cute, yes...but to her, ‘cute’ meant something she could tease with ease.
The man who called himself Icarus looked ahead, but something about those eyes held a key indicator that perhaps his sight was not the best. He knew there were three women sitting in front of him, which meant with this inference alone, he could look between the three individually. Nervousness and distrust were blatant in those large, doll-like eyes.
He finally, after the longest time, mustered up the courage to speak. His voice was tiny and shaky, but audible to the three. “You...you can...?”
“Yes, love. We c’n see you...perfectly, in fact. It’s...quite odd, really.”, Celeste laughed. “I’ve had that spell in th’ back o’ my mind for ages...but never ‘ad th’ right application for it. A ouija board is...a limited method of communication, but this...we c’n see you jus’ as if there was someone there before us...”
“And, by the Gods...it works. I truly forget that there’s a method to your madness, Cel...”
“Mmm...so you’re th’ one this board summoned, ah? I actually expected an older gentleman with that name...but i guess tis th’ con of assumin’, right? You...may i ask you another sensitive question, carino...?”
“You may. I assure you whatever it may be...i probably have heard it before. I don’t believe there is much that can truly frighten me...i lost all fear of the unknown long ago, my dear lady...”, he responded gently, a small smile curling at his mouth.
“Right...when you mentioned the ‘board’, which i guess was t’ mean th’ Ouija board...what did’ja mean by that? How was it tha’ this board ended your life?”
The smile on his lips then died to a spacy stare. He looked away, unsure of how to answer that question honestly without having the horrific memory tied to that response replay in his head. On one end, she was being so sincere and kind about her questioning that he felt compelled to continue answering, but on the other, how was he to answer something like that?
Icarus was torn between two evils: being dishonest with the woman or his own horrific trauma and death being relived again.
Fiddling with his hands, the act of toying with his fingers was enough to comfort him enough into not outright panicking before them. “I’d...i’d sooner not...answer that, ma’am. I...I can’t...not like...l-like...oh...”, he trailed off, mumbling into deafening silence.
It was then Celeste felt absolutely horrible for even asking him, if his shift in demeanor wasn’t much to go by. She felt as if she’d just kicked a puppy, and it took everything in her to not sever the circuit, keeping him visible and audible to all of them and embrace him. She looked over to Lucinda, who seemed to share in this grievance while Josephine’s impish expression softened.
-I mean...i s’ppose i would too if somethin’ came out from th’ board an’ used me as their personal lil joy-ride before killin’ my ass deader than a doornail—HEY!-, Josephine’s response was briefly cut short by a sharp punt to the ankle under the table. A low, agitated grunt left Lucinda at this.
“That’s ENOUGH! Haven’t you anything else better to say, or are you actively trying to start something with this poor man?! If you don’t want to be here, Josephine, simply say so!”
-...Ok, i could’ve phrased that better...but in my defense, you DID tell me t’ be honest. That’s all i was doing...an’ besides...yer acting as if that’s not pretty much what just happened. For God’s sake, LOOK. He even said it. The board killed him; what do you think that means? It means somethin’ looking t’ take advantage gave him th’ smoke an’ here he is!-
Both women glared her down , but it was Celeste who kept her eye on Icarus the entire time out of the corner of her peripherals, waiting for the phantom of the young man to go completely undone from grief and panic from the flooding memories of how his death came to be.
But, no. Instead, he slumped over until his head was practically down on the table, shielding his face from view.
Her heart ached, and with her untethered hand, she reached out—stopping for a moment mid-way, as if reconsidering it—before finally then deciding to console him. Her fingertips barely grazed the back of his arm, ghosting over his sleeve. Even if he was dead, she could feel a warmth radiating from his skin.
Was it just an illusion...or was it a result of her magic trying to compensate and make him seem as real as possible?
She wasn’t sure...but she knew he was reactive to her consoling touch. He didn’t touch her back, but didn’t push her hand away.
“Pardon her...sometimes, i forget she’s overly mouthy, so feel free to ignore that...if you are uncomfortable by the questions, then by all means: you are not obligated to answer them.”
“I...I’m aware of this, but...she also speaks the truth. In my darkest hour, something…i couldn’t quite tell you nor explain…but something, with no intention of playing nice sought to take my life. I thought it was them—the one i lost...but t’was a horrible lie. My death was nothing more than a fluke, and so shall it be—”
“Maybe so...but it is the way of fate. Sometimes, she can be cruel...and other times, she can play cruel games...none of it is fair, nor was how you passed...and for that, i truly am sorry...”
A mournful hum, before he looked up at her once more with solemn, clouded over eyes. “...My time in your hold wanes, sadly...i must go...but if you ever wish to speak with me again. All you need to do is call my name...i assure you, miss...i will come. As one who is as well-versed in the art of specters as you, i can confirm it...to call the full name of the deceased soul will make them come to you, as you would if someone called for you.”, he spoke, his voice as quiet and reverent as a prayer.
Celeste blinked, but an understanding gleam filled those dark emerald eyes. He was right—while the spell was effective in keeping spirits visible and audible to those contacting them; it was never for too long. She could’ve begged him to stay, but alas, that was outside of his own control as a phantom. So, with a nod, she returned the same tone of voice.
“Alright...until next time, Mr. Icarus...goodbye.”
As soon as all three women’s hands let go of the planchette, the spell was broken and the world around them regained its natural lighting. Icarus was now no longer able to be seen or heard from, which only further confirmed the spell had dissipated to nothing, leaving the trio in both wonder and slight sadness for the man.
The one who seemed the most affected by this was, of course, the leader of the seance herself.
Her questions only left her with more questions, but mostly about the man she’d just spoken to; not only did his appearance leave her wanting to talk to him more, but what he had told her also struck her as fascinating. By how he talked about the dead and spirits, he was possibly a medium of some type, which only drew her into him more just by default.
Be that because of her own fascination with spirits and the afterlife (Hell, her closest companion and guardian was this!), or because of the longing of her own Elias...
Elias...
She remembered the night she learned about his demise by the man who had wanted her as his own bride and as a trophy. It made her glad that he’d taken her sight from her when he’d first had her locked within the dungeons of his manor; a world without Elias was a world she no longer wished to see. Even after she could restore her sight after finally being free of El Antiguo Mal, it made her wish after then that she hadn’t.
So...maybe he could tell her something about him?
Was that even possible?
...Would Icarus even want to do that...?
It sounded quite selfish for her to make him use a gift that he’d been given, likely to bring closure to the bereaved and the dead. It was a gift meant for everyone, not just her. She then felt ashamed for even considering that as a possibility, but...it was a possibility.
A small one, but not an asinine one.
She had to see him again...
She HAD to see Icarus again...
-...I know that look in yer eyes, Cel...what is it?-
“...Nothin’. It’s...it’s nothin’. Really, Josie. Come on, let’s...let’s get this mess cleaned up, yes? Who’s on for a movie and a bottle o’ Sauvignon? After that, i’m sure you both ‘ave ‘ad enough o’ th’ smoke an’ mirrors routine...”
Both Lucinda and Josephine looked at one another. Something didn’t feel right about this; the dazed expression and current countenance didn’t suit Celeste, and they knew it. Something about the experience had set something off for the woman, and being ever the brave soul, she was trying to repress it.
Be that with other activities or alcohol, as if the act of offering a bottle of wine didn’t say it all.
Still...was it wise to make her talk about it? Both knew that once Celeste was dead-set on something, there was no stopping the draconian woman...so what made it any different here...?

regulus comforting barty in the last chapter was so !!!!!
I WOULDNT RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET WITHOUT YOU
THEMTHEMTHEMEHDHHDHSHDE
can u maybe talk about bartys thought process in this scene, ik regulus noticed him shutting down a bit but is he the type to overthinkiverthinkoverthink or just have sirens and screaming and crashing noises in his head when he's panicking
THANK YOU!!!
regulus does not overthink an emotional conversation one (1) time and accidentally POPS OFF with THERE'S NO HAPPY ENDING FOR ME UNLESS YOU'RE IN IT
barty's more of the *record scratch* *sirens* type, he doesn't really spiral the same way regulus does, it's a Red Flag Red Flag Red Flag sort of thing
buuuuut this scene isn't very long SO! i'm just going to go through the entire thing
(i'll be including direct quotes from chapter 54 below the cut, but i'm not going to tag this as spoilers since it's a chapter that's already been posted)
so, first of all: barty comes in expecting this to be about the war. that's important because that's his mental context - this is about battle and loyalty and allegiance and intelligence and whether evan is trustworthy. because 'is evan trustworthy' was a question barty and regulus were asking each other YESTERDAY. LITERALLY THE PREVIOUS DAY. (a lot of words have elapsed since it's a busy couple of days for regulus, but like, THAT WAS SUNDAY. THIS IS MONDAY. TECHNICALLY TUESDAY BECAUSE IT'S AFTER MIDNIGHT BUT EMOTIONALLY MONDAY.)
and he is also tired and that's important too!! he is not alert, his brain is slow, he doesn't have Overthinking Everything About Evan to keep him awake (regulus has been vibrating out of his skin for the past 20 minutes at LEAST). like he's paying *attention* because this seems *important* but he is tired.
so right away: regulus goes off script. he's talking around stuff. he's mentioning lucinda???? lucinda's not involved in the war?????
this is when barty begins to get the sense that maybe he made an incorrect assumption about why he was being summoned at 2 in the morning. but he really does not know where regulus is going with this, so it's not an 'ohmygod feelings' moment, it's a '?????' moment. hence his visual confusion - he's very much lost already. regulus what. just tell me. i am so sleepy
but there's a long pause there!! and in that long pause, barty has the thought of: lucinda was gossiping about people yearning for each other at dinner.
he doesn't like having that thought, and that's why he responds with "Lucinda spent all of dinner talking about Hufflepuffs you find incredibly dull" - giving regulus an opportunity to clarify what the fuck he's talking about. and regulus... sort of clarifies, but not in a direction barty really likes - i'd call his thought process really along the lines of 'wordless seeping dread' here
and then regulus basically goes 'i have a huge crush on evan' and everything DOES click into place for barty
if regulus were in this position, he'd spiral - super long rambly paragraphs of inner monologue about implications and emotions and all of that. barty is more... nonverbal about it, if that makes sense? inarticulate? just like an 'oh.' and with that 'oh' comes a general sense of 'regulus is not mine anymore.'
after barty's "Oh" when regulus starts talking again, barty isn't really... listening? like he's hearing the words regulus is saying but he's just kind of mentally reduced to that one feeling, putting the world into a new configuration. when he says "So... you like him," that's... 'admitting defeat' is too strong of a phrase, but it's not WRONG. that's half resignation, half 'am i going insane, is regulus about to be like no dude how the fuck did you come to that wild-ass conclusion?'
because this is OUT OF LEFT FIELD for regulus. he's never breathed a word about being romantically interested in anyone ever. barty got very comfortable with that status quo. which is now being ripped out from under his feet. yay!
regulus, of course, charges onward - he's in Problem Solving Mode, but the problem he's focused on is the Evan Problem. but then barty lets some bitterness slip (he was trying to make a joke. it came out too real.) and then he gets The Regulus Stare Of Investigation because regulus has clocked that something is *off*
and that's when barty pivots! because regulus is asking him for help with this, and he's not going to just be an asshole to his best friend for the crime of having feelings for someone. he can be upset and angst over his life and his crumbling sense of self worth later. right now, regulus requires ASSISTANCE. and barty doesn't want to make regulus feel bad about asking for help because regulus DEFINITELY does not need that, he has a hard enough time with it as it is, and this is an emotionally sensitive topic and barty does NOT want regulus to shut him out so!!! time to be HELPFUL
but too late. regulus has found the problem and he is not letting go of it. barty tries to divert him with another wry comment of sorts, except it doesn't really work, and then he gets another Regulus Stare Of Investigation and then regulus hits him with the "I wouldn't ride off into a sunset without you. I wouldn't like it."
now, this is both a 'oh thank god' moment and a 'mortifying ordeal of being known' moment for barty. he doesn't quite want to acknowledge how PRECISELY regulus identified the problem, because that means acknowledging that on some level, barty *is* possessive of regulus, but in the sense of like... being possessive of his place in regulus's life as Closest Person? it's not even about being most important to regulus - it's about being closest to him. and regulus clearly knows that, which is... a vulnerable moment for barty
but regulus has reaffirmed the most important thing, which is that they are BFFs, and so barty's brain can slowly begin to work again now that regulus has removed the big sudden wrench in the gears
but he is still sleepy and he wants time to adjust/process, hence asking regulus if they really need to discuss it right at that second. if regulus had said yes, then barty would have done it, but he is relieved that he can go
and barty is STILL sad about it. that's important. he's going to be supportive but he's sad because it means their dynamic *will* change somehow, unless regulus gets over evan like. asap, which probably won't happen. but at least regulus isn't *leaving.*
barty's going to continue to feel insecure about that - they'll need to talk about it more before it's really resolved, and to some degree barty won't really feel solid in the new normal until it's pretty settled and he actually knows how he and regulus work these days because he has proof
BUT!!! he and regulus are at least on the same page about being vital to each other's happiness. so there's that!

uhh 2, 4, 24 for the oc thing 💯
2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs?
like asking if I have a favourite child! I have biases for sure though haha - usually because certain dynamics interest me or because certain characters are fun to write
Mechana and Lucinda have been favourites for a while though - as mentioned Lucinda has been around for years and years and gone through many changes, pretty much her whole character has been flipped on it's head since 2014 when I initially came up with her design
Mechana was slightly more recent, about 2018? she was based on an AOStH AU that was supposed to more focus on Robotnik's robots as they try to navigate the world on their own after leaving the abusive paternal relationship of their creator.
so Mechana was "what if we made Robotnik a lady. Oh no I like her."
she's still kind of messed up, she's burned bridges with a lot of those closest to her including the sentient robots she built. She has an alcohol problem. She once had very honorable goals but she's been gradually losing her way, up until present canon time where she's very much like Robotnik - bitter, prone to violence and stubborn.
I realized, because this universe is more serious than the one it's based on I wasn't going to have a Sonic, so I needed a different sort of rival for Mechana. Lucinda just sort of happened to flit across my mental radar, but having both characters in the same story has shaped both of them so much I can't separate them anymore
like, Lucy's orange made me want to lean more into giving Mechana a contrasting colour scheme, Mechana is mentally decaying, Lucy is trying to fend off a physical disease that claimed her father's life at around the age she is now. Lucy is obsessed with fitness and all that healthy lifestyle stuff, she scarcely drinks. Lucy is more obsessed with her image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was going to bring up more characters I have biases towards but I think the fact that I went on about these two as long as I have is pretty telling HAHAHA
I want to do more with them sometime though! Like, part of me thinks their universe would be cool as a premise for a game or something
oh I also at one point wanted to do some animated thing with them (one other character mentioned here, Dr. Mallard is another rival roboticist Lucinda hired - he was otherwise good, but a combination of running tight on money and Lucinda deceptively painting the job she was hiring for in a virtuous light persuaded him to work for her)
youtube
also a bit biased towards Eddie Winters bc he was really fun to write, Animato my funny mask guy (...maybe I just have a bias towards funny mask guys also) and Selkie who might be one of my all time fave persona/fursona designs
4. A character you rarely talk about?
I have certain stories that just kind of sit in limbo sometimes, so I can have like, casts of characters who just sit on the backburner haha
I never talked about her specifically I don't think? Sherry is the main character in a story I had in development for a while - this was in 2020
Tumblr media
sort of a magic + monarchy setting, Sherry (dark blue + left) and her twin brother Mickey (pink + far left) were born to a malicious ruler, after Mickey was disowned in his youth for being outed Sherry was set to inherit the throne. Although, things would not go to plan, many years later Sherry escaped from the monarchy with Verde's (green) help in order to transition.
The story's canon begins with Sherry and Mickey reuniting, both of them having been in hiding and their half-brother Dan now as the sole prince the throne would publicly claim. The two of them receive a mysterious message: the King is out for blood, he wants to get rid of Sherry for good and make sure his authority is absolute and unquestioned.
So Sherry goes on a quest to find other women to aid her and find a way to counter the King, while also trying to avoid those he's sent to capture and kill her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's also lots and lots of magic, Sherry's power is summoning and wielding knives, characters tend to have very specific types of magic and there's sometimes a hereditary element to it (metal is also the King's element, summoning swords has been a tradition)
lots and lots of exploration on the subject of identity, particularly with a focus on women
also, geez, some of these ladies came from a LISA AU except like a reverse deal with all women? Madam Monocle and Hedi specifically from the main cast - Madam is one of my favorite designs also, I have talked about her before, badass older lesbian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if I like a design I will recycle it somewhere mark my worms
it's not a priority rn but I still wanna do something with these guys eventually!!
24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?
might also have to go with Madam Monocle here bc she's just so much fun, she's a wild lady

November 28 -- Around the World in 30 Days -> The Isle of Wight
1: The Isle of Wight has a particularly low density of Magicks. Possibly due to the Kingsbury influence over the years, but probably due to how cut it off it can be from the Mainland, the population of Magicks on the Isle is pretty small, if there are any at all.
2: There are rumours of a pod of mermaids off the south coast. There a lot of stories about mermaids over the past few centuries which is pretty typical for an island, but legend still persist today of a pod of mermaids that live off the southern coast, using the cliffs for cover and the channel for hunting
3: Carisbrooke Castle is open to visitors in the summer. A bit like Alnwick Castle, some of Carisbrooke is open to the public in the summer, showcasing what the interior looks like in the modern world. Of course only a select few rooms are open and an entry fee is charged, but the money goes towards the upkeep of the castle.
4: Or... it was. As of September 2023, the castle closed up early, and its future as an attraction is uncertain.
5: You could also (previously) rent a horse from the Carisbrooke stables. Because Lady Lucinda had such an interest in horses, the stable at Carisbrooke is particularly large, and before the castle closed it was possible to rent a horse for a hack around the castle grounds.
6: Some of the fossils found on the Isle of Wight may not be dinosaurs. Some scholars have been making arguments that some of the numerous fossils found on the island aren't actually dinosaurs, but in fact are the ancient ancestors of modern magical creatures, but no one has actually thought to test the fossils properly.
7: The Needles were created by an ancient seamonster. An old legend says that some great seabeast tried to jump up on the cliffs of the Isle, cleaving it into chunks and leaving the Needles behind. One of the Kingsbury men was said to have slain the beast, but there's no evidence to suggest it actually happened.
8: The Carisbrooke Cemetery is haunted by a very particular spirit. Though there's a few different ghost tales about Carisbrooke cemetery, the main one is of William Cheverley, who was the groundskeeper for almost sixty years. Legend says that if you go into the cemetery at nightfall and move things around, Cheverley's ghost will move them back. And if you anger him enough, he might just chase you right out.
9: There is a network of hidden underground tunnels under the isle. Supposedly abandoned railway projects, only a few are known about and open to the public, but there are rumoured to be more that are closed off to the public, and perhaps used for illegal smuggling...
10: The Devil's Chimney wasn't just used by smugglers. The steep path through the cliffs and down to the bay may have once been used by smugglers to get easy access to the bay, but some say the sheltered path was used by those trying to summon demons, using the cover of the rocks to hide their illicit activities.

London bridge is falling down, my Fair Lady (Demon! Venus & Human! Alaric)
Written by @thelonelyreaderr and edited by me as per usual! :D
[Masterlist] [Mini Stories] [AO3] [Wattpad]
Alaric is a human, and Venus is a demon he accidentally summons so our demon lady decides to torture the poor human :D
Summoning a demon was definitely not on Alaric’s to-do list for Halloween, but there he was, in a crumbling old house, and lying on a pentagram he drew the floor. His main worry was that his hair was going to get lice.
‘It took so long to make it this perfect shade of purple, and yet, I’m letting it all go to waste…’ As Alaric started up at the ceiling, he wondered if the roof would fall on him and put him out of his misery he had brought upon himself.
‘Oh. That explains the smell,’ Alaric thought as he noticed the mold and weird fungus growing in the corners and crevices of the house.
“Just how long do I have to lay in this stupid pose?” Alaric asked, clearly annoyed at how long this is taking. His friends who were crowded around a withered-looking book glanced at him, but didn’t move.
“A little while longer– Hey! Don't get up!” Lucy scolded as soon as she saw Alaric push himself off the floor out of the corner of her eye.
“Lucinda. I am not laying on the floor again until you find what you're looking for. In fact–” As Alaric started to stand up, he cut his hand on a shard of glass poking out from the floorboard. He cursed under his breath and he furiously shook his hand causing his blood to splatter all over the moldy carpet. The musty smell of the house was quickly replaced with the coppery smell of Alaric’s blood.
“I swear to all that is good and holy if I get an infection and will have to cut off my hand because of this…” Alaric angrily muttered through clenched teeth, desperately trying to stop the bleeding from his hand.
“Let’s hope you don’t.. I’m not paying your medical bills if you do though,” Lucy teased, playing with a strand of light brown hair that had fallen out of her space buns. Alaric rolled his eyes at Lucy’s reply and stepped out of the pentagram, not noticing as his blood dripped onto the floor and seeped into the dusty wooden planks. Even if they did notice, no one would pay attention to the pentagram if it started to glow a faint shade of crimson.

As the night faded into the morning, the friend group tickled out of the house until one remained. Alaric couldn’t bring himself to leave just yet… it was as if there was something or someone forcing him to wait. Becoming bored at the waiting, Alaric decided to explore the rusty house. As he made his way up the creaky, spiraling staircase, he couldn’t help but wonder what the house had looked like in its golden days.
Funnily enough, he had never been to the second floor but as he went from room to room, he felt a strange sense of comfort and…belonging? Alaric wasn’t sure what he felt, but it felt nice so he continued exploring around the house.
As Alaric approached the final room, he hesitated to open the door as his hands gently rested on the rusty brass door handle. It took him a few seconds to gather his confidence, but once he did, Alaric quickly opened the door and pushed it wide open. To his amazement, there wasn’t as much withering as in the other rooms. If he really wanted to, he could take a nap on the bed. A shiny piece of silver caught Alaric’s eye as he glanced around the room. Tilting his head to the side, Alaric made his way over to the dresser and picked up a silver hair comb. ‘It hasn’t rusted?’ Alaric thought as he toyed with it. He was quite surprised when he saw that a shiny, new comb had somehow ended up in a place like this.
“Playing with my toys now, are we?” A velvety voice asked from behind, causing Alaric to snap his head back and gape at the beauty before him. She had sage green hair that fell to her thighs, and russet-colored skin which was a deep contrast to her silver eyes. Heat filled Alaric’s cheeks as he quickly realized he was staring and immediately turned his head to the side, hoping to not embarrass himself further.
“Your toys?” Alaric managed to squawk out. He was quite confused on what she meant by that, but he had a feeling that he would find out soon.
“Yes, toys. That comb is mine,” The girl replied with a smile, taking a few steps closer to Alaric.
“And so are you,” The girl added, her lips turning into a sly smile as she approached Alaric.
“I-I’m yours?” Alaric mentally cursed himself for stuttering, but he didn’t have time to focus on that. He blinked several times, contemplating on whether what he just heard was real or not.
‘Ugh.. I must be hallucinating from the lack of sleep last night…’ Alaric thought, trying to convince himself that none of this was real, despite the fact that his inner voice was telling him that it was very much real.
“Yes. You summoned me so now I own you,” The demon said as if it was obvious. She bared her fangs out as she grinned wider at Alaric.
“That's how it works?” Alaric questioned, trying to stall for time. He felt himself back up to a window and actually wondered why he even agreed to summon the demon with his friends.
“Mhm, the name Venus by the way.” Venus teased as she got close to Alaric, clearly trying to seduce him.
“Oh..” Alaric quietly stuttered as he felt Venus’s eyes on him. He honestly did not know what to do in this situation.
‘Welp, guess I’ll die,’ Alaric ultimately decided. It wasn’t very likely that he was going to escape from a literal demon from hell, so might as well accept his fate.
A sudden gust of wind caught Alaric off guard. The next thing Alaric knew was that he was lying on his back, looking up at the sky. Alaric blinked several times, trying to process what in the world had just happened as he suddenly felt a sharp pain come from his head and something warm flowing down. Alaric realized that Venus had pushed him out the window and he was now on the ground. Bleeding. Alaric internally sighed, wondering how in the world he would survive with this crazy demon…

The Americans “Stand True”
Tumblr media
Every few years, musicians arrive on the scene with an undeniably fresh approach to a tried-and-true genre. Showcasing this with unparalleled proficiency is the acclaimed Los Angeles-based Americana band The Americans. Upon hearing Stand True the band’s forthcoming 11-song, sophomore studio LP (out May 6 via Loose Music) it’s evident why revered producer T Bone Burnett raved, calling them, “genius twenty-first century musicians that are reinventing American heritage music for this century. And it sounds even better this century.” The title track and album opener, “Stand True,” showcases the group’s riveting grip on storytelling, dynamics and melodic hooks that leave listeners cemented to their speakers. Patrick Ferris (vocals/guitar), Jake Faulkner (bassist) and Zac Sokolow (guitarist) collide to deliver a moving collection that lands somewhere between Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Nathaniel Rateliff. Following their 2017 debut album, I’ll Be Yours, The Americans took a step back, regained focus, and went into Big Bad Sound studios in Los Angeles to carve out an album of material that “is more our own than ever before,” the band confirms. The overall touchstone of Stand True, which the band self-produced, is devotion in the face of loss. And with that, the album’s sophomore single, “Born With A Broken Heart,” solidifies that concept as it showcases an edgier side to the band; a gritty ode to the way romantically wounded people sometimes find one another. “Driving home from gigs, Zac would tune into a Navajo AM radio station out of Window Rock, AZ,” recalls Patrick. “Parts of the song came from some of that music. It feels like driving through Los Angeles at night.” It was sometime in the 1970s, a decade before front man Patrick Ferris and bassist Jake Faulkner were born, that their mothers met on a train to Woodstock. Patrick and Jake met as children, but they lived in different cities and saw very little of one another before reconnecting in high school. They got along immediately through their joy for busking (street performing), and pre-war American country and blues. “Nobody I knew liked the same music,” recalls Patrick. Jake came to San Francisco from Los Angeles to visit, bringing his guitar and baskets of recording gear. They spent that summer recording homeless street musicians with a mobile unit they lugged around the city, making copies of the recordings for the performers to sell. Guitarist Zac Sokolow had dropped out of high school and was busking on the streets while working construction in Los Angeles when Jake saw him playing guitar. Jake convinced him to move in and start a band. They spent years digging through obscure records and arcane field recordings, teaching themselves the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, and slide guitar. Patrick calls this long immersion, during which he created and hosted a radio show, a “purist” phase. “We were suspicious of modern rock music,” he says. “When we got together and formed a band, we had to make everything from scratch. We had no template. There was no band we wanted to be like. We were curious if we could create something brand new, summoning the spirit of old blues and country through what we’d learned firsthand, leaving nostalgia behind.” “We write our songs inside-out,” says Patrick. “We grab hold of something minuscule and primitivea simple turn of phrase or an unusual beatand try to build a song around it. It’s inefficient, and hard to write words over, but it’s magical when it works.” The band’s distinctive, powerful works have captured the attention of a number of stars. They’ve backed Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Ashley Monroe, and Devendra Banhart, and twice joined Ryan Bingham on national tours. They worked closely with Jack White and T Bone Burnett, joining Nas, Elton John, and Alabama Shakes in the PBS primetime series American Epic. Their live show, honed over many hundreds of performances, is something to behold. Ron Wray (No Depression) writes, “they’re led by lead singer, guitarist Patrick Ferris, looking like James Dean but even better…Jake Faulkner, with his dark black beard and jaunty hat, dances across stage, lifting his stand-up bass like a dancing partner.” Steve Wildsmith (Daily Times) admires their “anthemic guitar hooks and a heartland sense of urgency that’s tailor made for road trips and late-night parties beneath a field of brilliant stars.” The band’s first tour was different from most. A friend who’d introduced them to Robert Frankwhose collection of photographs inspired the band’s namewas appointed drummer. He was allowed to play with only a plywood suitcase, which he beat with a soup spoon. The band set off on a meandering, quixotic odyssey that found them playing honky-tonks, rural bars, a Navajo radio station, and a wine cellar in an abandoned Coca-Cola bottling plant. Some of the venues hadn’t hosted a live band since the 1980s. “We had a passport to the hidden heartland of our country,” recounts Jake. “What you learn exploring the nooks and crannies of any place, but especially this country, is that there’s no type of person.” Zac adds that “stereotypes break down at the individual level. What makes American music great is the same thing that makes America greatpeople who come from all over the world, each with a story, each with something to contribute.” Additional Artist/Song Information: Artist Name: Americans Song Title: Stand True Publishing: HIGH WATER MUSIC Publishing Affiliation: ASCAP Album Title: Stand True Record Label: The Americans Read the full article
