hunters are typically hereditary, in the sense that the skills and traditions are passed down from parent to child over the years. this life was expected of rosemary and sage, but while other children of hunters learned of supernatural creatures at a young age, zehra decided it was best to let them be children as long as possible, debating with adem whether to wait until they were at least ten or twelve to tell them or whether they were more at risk not knowing. 

when the girls were about eight, adem made a wrong move. he’d taken down a trio of werewolves. or, at least, so he’d thought. one had survived and remembered his scent, wasting no time in tracking him down. the family was staying at a lodge in chugiak with family friends right outside anchorage for the twins’ birthday, still absolutely not grown out of begging to go to the marsh wildlife boardwalk. the werewolf, near feral in their wolf form and even worse consumed with rage, had no mercy for anyone in adem’s family. shattering the wooden cabin door into pieces, only zehra managed to escape with a terrified rosemary in her arms. they ran until the earth ran out, and when the werewolf slashed at rosemary, it managed no more than a scratch before zehra shoved rosemary off the cliff. people went cliff diving here regularly, and perhaps it wasn’t safe, but an icy lake was better than being left for a werewolf. 

when their family friends, taras and sasha koval, returned from dinner, they were too late to catch the werewolf and found only zehra in her final moments. sasha’s hand clasped in hers, zehra begged her to look for her daughters, to keep them safe, and to keep them far, far away from the world they all knew. 

sage’s body was never found, and all a young rosemary could remember when she awoke in the hospital was the frigid temperature of the lake, a soul-freezing emptiness that left her feeling as though she’d never know warmth again. they told her it had been a car accident, that they’d driven off a cliff and only she had survived, that her vague memory of a splintered cabin was just her brain’s way of trying to process what she couldn’t remember. as more time passed, she believed she really must have imagined it. 

the kovals adopted her and kept to zehra’s last wishes. despite her being younger by several years than their son and daughter, they raised her as their own, and kept her completely oblivious of supernaturals, whether they agreed with it or not. for her thirteenth birthday, after a read of anne of green gables, rosemary asked to legally take the koval last name, too. 

she will introduce herself has rosemary, but her closest friends might call her rose. she’s fine with any nicknames except despises mary.

after losing her biological family, rosemary has been desperate to never be left alone again and puts down roots in as many friendships and community organizations as she can manage, often spreading herself too thin.

losing her brother-in-law was another terrible blow, but emotionally losing her sister morgan was the most devastating loss yet, since it felt like her own fault for not being able to reach her. 

is very big on platonic love and will hold hands and hug and snuggle with everyone without hesitation. probably seems flirtatious at times but does not flirt with anyone on purpose and is entirely oblivious to anyone flirting with her.

Supergirl: Lena Luthor - Type 6w5

Type 6s are reliable, loyal, hard-working and suspicious. Type 6s have the basic desire to be safe and have stability, and they have a basic fear of being without support or guidance. At their best, 6s are self-reliant and content with themselves, and at their worst, they are full of self-doubt and insecurities.

Lena is cautious, reserved and responsible, however she often lashes out if she feels she is being lied to or betrayed. At her best, she puts herself out there and is friendly towards people, for example, her relationship with Kara and the other super-friends.

I was stuck between 1 and 6 for Lena, because she is really afraid of being ‘bad’ like her family, however, I think her reactions to Kara lying to her and her motivations are more in line with 6.

Lena has had a tumultuous childhood, which has caused her to fear abandonment, and being alone. She has always felt like an outsider in her family since she was told she was adopted, and she has felt like Lillian didn’t accept or love her.

At her best, she is happy and secure in her friendships, especially with Kara as she feels she can really open up to her and tell her what she is really feeling. She tells Kara about her childhood and her fears of being betrayed, which she usually would hide from others. She also tells her a lot about her relationship with her mother, which is something she hasn’t told many other people, because she feels she can trust Kara.

At her worst, Lena is extreme in her views about betrayal. For example, she is desperately trying to create Project Non-Nocere to stop people from hurting each other, because she was so hurt be Kara. Throughout the show, she has also disintegrated towards 3 as she often neglects personal relationships and throws herself into her work. She is extremely closed off towards others and often lies as she is afraid of not being accepted or being thought of as evil.

She shows her 5 wing as she is much more reserved than a 7 wing and she has a strong focus on knowledge. Lena is extremely intelligent and she often uses knowledge to feel secure in things.

Supergirl Enneagram Types

Okay, after months of procrastination research, I finally compiled a list for the enneagram types of the main characters of supergirl (at least most of them).

Before we dive in, I would highly recommend checking out the enneagram institute’s type descriptions if you’re confused as I won’t be giving full descriptions of the types as that would take too long. I will go into the aspects that informed why I typed each character as such.

For a summary though, there are nine types, one through nine. Most people also have a dominant “wing” one of the types either side of them which influences their personality. For instance, a type 9 could be a 9w1 or a 9w8.

Kara Danvers - 2w3

“I can’t let that stop me from helping the people that need my help”

Twos are often known as “the helper”. Kara’s first priority in any situation is helping people, even at the cost of herself. I mean hell, she flew herself (and fort rozz) into space to prevent planet from being mind controlled. Like a type two, when she is in stress she becomes resentful and angry.

Her three wing shows in how she continually strives to improve herself, working hard to prove her worth to others.

Alex Danvers - 6w5

“You got me”

Sixes are known as the loyal skeptic - and are the type most closely related to anxiety. Alex is extremely loyal to the people she loves - a ride or die sort of woman. Like many type sixes, Alex does not like to be unprepared for a situation but will barrel in headfirst for her loved ones and her community.

Her five wing shows in her introversion and when she taps into the “scientific” portion of her brain, seeking out knowledge to make sense of her surroundings.

J’onn J’onzz - 8w9

Type eight is also known as “the protector”. J’onn throughout the series has progressed to a healthy eight - integrating to the positive traits of a type two, becoming a force for justice and protecting the innocent. He demonstrates eight qualities in the battle with anger most type eights have to reckon with, and the fierce protectiveness he has of his found family.

His nine wing shows in his desire for peace, both in his mind and externally.

Lena Luthor - 1w2

“I will not allow you to judge me and my use of science for the betterment of humanity.”

Type ones are also known as “the reformer” or “the perfectionist”. Their basic fear is of being a corrupt or “bad” person at their core, which certainly applies to Lena who is terrified of becoming like her brother. Lena’s obsession with “fixing” people is emblematic of her type, seeing the differences in the world as flaws that can be fixed by her. The fact that she uses her own morals to determine what is “correct” and is incredibly resistant to criticism, rather than collaborating with others , demonstrates the less healthy qualities of a type one.

Lena really wants to help the world, to be loved and needed by others. Her two wing shows in this.

Nia Nal - 4w3

“The greatest gift we can give each other is our authentic selves”

Until reading that quote, I was stumped on what to type Nia as. She has the energy and optimism of a seven, the desire for fairness and justice like a one or an eight, the desire to help like a two and sometimes the people-pleasing nature of a nine. However, Nia is a type four. The basic desire of a four is to find themselves and their significance and their basic fear is to be without an identity. Nia’s identity is the most important thing to her, not only as a trans woman but as a superhero, a friend, a journalist, a daughter a sister. Identity is so fundamental to the beauty of the world to her, that any attack on someone’s identity is met with a blast of dream energy.

Her three wing shows in her engagement with others and her determined nature towards her work and heroics. Nia wants to leave a mark on the world.

Brainiac 5 - 5w4

Now, I do understand the irony of a character called Braniac *5* being a *type five*, but he does fit the bill. Type fives crave knowledge and understanding of the world above all else, and if you think Brainy isn’t one who wants to know everything... then I guess we’re watching different shows?

James Olsen - 4w3

“When you take a picture of someone, it’s permanent. You’ve captured the truth of them in that moment and that you can keep forever.”

James is a type four with a strong type three wing. He’s proud of his achievements and doesn’t like to stay in one place career wise for too long, seeking opportunities. However, like Nia, his identity is one of the most important things to him. It’s why he became guardian, he wanted to be more than just the *friend* of a superhero. Identity is why he revealed himself to the world, and why he is so vigilant against injustice.

Winn Schott - 3w2

Winn was tough until I started thinking about the basic fear of the enneagram types. A type three’s basic fear is of being worthless. As Winn progresses throughout the series he slowly becomes more of an “achiever”, being proud of his accomplishments and pushing himself to new heights (and new time periods). Winn wants to be known, to be appreciated for the things he can do and to have something he can be proud of himself for.

Mon El - 7w6

Type sevens are perhaps the most extroverted and optimistic type. Mon El too likes to seek out adventure and not be beholden to mundane things in life. He seeks out the things he enjoys and does his best to avoid pain. Less healthy sevens can be incredibly impulsive and scattered, but like we saw with Mon El is season three, when personal growth is achieved they become more focused.

Kelly Olsen - 9w8

Whilst some may categorise Kelly as a type two as she too enjoys helping people, I don’t think that’s correct. Type twos aren’t afraid to be confrontational, whilst a type nine will prefer to keep the boat steady. Kelly is definitely a calming and steady force in the superfriends.

Hey, Charity! How are you doing? Do you know Hogwarts Houses of the characters of the Originals and Legacies? Also are you planning on watching Supergirl someday? I'm just so curious to know the characters' HH, MBTI and Enneagram

I've seen a couple of episodes of Supergirl. She's a Hufflepuff and an ESFJ. Beyond that, I don't remember much.

The Originals - Klaus, Rebekah, and Freya are Slytherins (Family First), Elijah, Marcel, Vincent and Hayley are Hufflepuffs (Community / everyone is equal), Kol and Davina are Gryffindors (I do what I want even if you disagree), and I'm not sure about Cami -- Gryffindor?

I don't remember Legacies characters well enough to categorize them... I'll watch it and give my opinion whenever season 3 turns up on Netflix. Hope is probably a Slytherin; she seems to take care of everyone in a possessive, Buffy-esque way (mine to protect).

Lena sp4 argument :3

I’ve been iffy on Lena’s enneagram for a while and had settled on sp1 (I was sure she was e1, just unsure on the subtype), however after growing my knowledge and reconsidering; I present you with my sp4 argument! I might throw in some points regarding MBTI & Jungian to reinforce my analysis too.

Part 1: Refuting E1

While E1 is a take I understand, after further analysis it doesn’t fit Lena beyond surface level traits such as perfectionism and self-criticism. We should first examine the 3 triads present in enneagram, being gut, heart, and head. The gut triad is the one that deals with Anger, with E1 in particular turning this anger into righteousness, they move against people. The head triad deals with fear, moving away from people; they retreat into their own head living in the world of ideas. Finally the heart triad is the one that deals with shame, with E4 being the one that is focused on their devalued image (unlike the pride of an E2 or vanity of an E3).

SP1 is a type that I think has been misinterpreted, SP1 is often described as a type that turns their anger into oneself, always striving for perfection, thus turning their anger into warmth. While this may be true, it’s still important to realize that SP1 is still an E1 (not even the countertype at that), they are still incredibly focused on outside standards, they merely mask their anger in contrast to the other subtypes. While yes Lena does fall into this, so much of her character is based on internal personal sentiments, rather than the external standards of perfection. While Lena does have strong morals she believes in, E1 should not be correlated simply with that.

Let’s compare the passions of E1 vs E4, which are Anger and Envy, respectively. The passion of anger causes the person to be critical, frustrated at the world and themselves for not living up to their expectations. They look down upon those that don’t fit into their moralistic ideas, seeing themselves as superior in that aspect. I really do think Lena lacks the crucial element of resenting the world, not just herself. Her arc in season 5, is really the only big indicator to me and even then, it came primarily from the hurt of Kara not revealing her secret, with her moralistic ideals of “fixing the world” stemming from that. It was due to her hurt of being confirmed, by the people she trusted the most, as being the bad guy. Envy will be explained shortly.

Part 2. Explaining SP4

Lena is a very interesting and complex character, however I feel like much of the analysis regarding her typology is very denying of her inherent emotionality, of her personal sentiments; in fact many of the arguments regarding INTJ on this page hinge on how “strong” her Fi is. I had also believed this and even wrote an (unpublished) analysis explaining her functions.

The tertiary is one that isn’t even mentioned in the original literature about MBTI and even so, it is a weak function. While this is not an MBTI or Jungian argument I ask for people to explain how Lena would be a thinking>feeling type, just because she is incredibly smart and capable of rational thought doesn’t make her a thinker. So much of her character is built on the sense of feeling, which as outlined in Jungian, isn’t inherently tied to showing emotion.

However let’s get back to the point.

While E4 may have the image of a lamenting character or one that’s all about creativity or identity; that is a massive oversimplification of the type. We should first examine the ego structure of an E4.

E4 has the fixation of melancholy, they feel dissatisfied and yearn for more, eventually they develop the passion of envy, which causes them to desire what others may have, they feel a deep sense of lacking.

>”In type 4 there is a deficient self: the person feels that they are worthless, that they do not have, there is an impoverished image of themselves, and there is also a strong idealization of what they would like to be.”

The self-preservation instinct is one that is focused on their own survival, thus they focus on their own security.

How the instinct manifests in E4 is that it creates a character that takes in their own envy (thus being the countertype), believing that they can take anything that comes their way. They are demanding and expect perfection of themselves. SP4’s aren’t also very expressive with their emotions, which fits Lena’s attitude of repressing her emotions. This line from the E4 book made me think of her little boxes.

Here are some quotes outlining the character of an sp4.

>”Although it is not difficult to confuse the search for perfection of an conservation E4 with that of an E1, the conservation E4 accompanies this attitude with effort and dissatisfaction: the search to be perfect or to do things perfectly is the consequence of a feeling of inferiority and an attempt to compensate for the experience of being insufficient.”

>“Different from the "sufferer" (social E4) and the "insufferable" (sexual E4) is what is called the "suffered" (or “long-suffering”) in Spanish, an expression that speaks to us of a capacity for self-frustration and endurance.

>”Instead of being a very tearful person, the sufferer is one who does not complain and avoids crying in front of others, and who has learned to swallow a lot and endure pain without blinking.”

>”One of the most obvious differences between the E4 conservation and the other subtypes of envy is the lack of expression of this passion: conservation is the subtype where envy appears most denied, and it is difficult to recognize it because the person does not stay in the lack and in envy towards what it does not have, but through effort it transforms in a compensatory way what it lacks, thus defending itself from the envious feeling.”

Think back to moments in the show, how Lena tries so hard to be different from her family's legacy, she feels this deep shame of being a Luthor, desperately trying to redeem the name, to try and do something good. We see her put on a stoic, hardworking mask, being overly consumed in her work. While in moments of vulnerability (and mild alcohol inhibition) she reveals her true feelings, such as the scene Lena has in S3E05.

These lines are so indicative of Lena’s deep shame in her name, how she truly views herself as below others and less then. Despite her view of herself being very negative, calling herself a bad person on many occasions; she strives for altruism and tries desperately to show that she is different from her family.

What she tries to do with L-Corp, by reforming it, wasn’t to fit her own expectations and to aim for the idea of perfection.

No, it was reformed out of a sense of penance, a fact that Lena literally states in the first episode she’s in.

Childhood:

The childhood of a sp4 also matches up extremely close to Lena’s own, she lost her mother at a young age, blaming herself for her death, following that she was taken in by the Luthor family. From this Lena grew up with a poor self image, feeling rejected by Lillian, while also undergoing the guilt that still plagues her into adulthood.

>”Physiological and emotional deprivation at an early age, which may be due to the loss of the mother due to death, illness, depression, abandonment or temporary absence-”

>”In the most general case, when the mother remains by the child's side but stops attending to him, taking care of him and giving him a safe environment, the child introjects the hostile figure, giving rise to his bad internal image and the experience of lack and longing for the good mother The mother is left as great and idealized and the child feels very small and helpless. This way of seeing others as superior is going to be repeated in their relationships throughout their lives.”

This deprivation of affection and loss results in a character that believes they are at fault, thus leading to their tenacious and masochistic attitude. Lena took all the terrible things in her childhood, introjecting them and thus believing that she is a bad person. We see her channel these beliefs into her efforts of being a better person, to try and always do right.

also so>sx instinct as I see Lena being incredibly aware and attentive of social norms, rather than the focus on one-on-one relations/competition the sx instinct is about. Although I would be willing to change my mind on this.

Conclusion:

Lena is an sp4 as she lacks the world resentment and external standards of perfection that an E1 would have. However she does fit the feelings of deficiency, she has a strong ideal of who she wants to be, striving for that image with tenacity and effort; this matches up with how the passion of envy is twisted in combination with the self-preservation instinct. Her themes of trying to be perfect and swallowing pain, are a near textbook reflection of an sp4.

FUN FACT! I am an Enneagram type 4 so nearly all of my answers fall into some form of “it depends” because everything is determined by my mood, and that is usually effected by the weather so a lot of things change depending on the season. So enjoy my rambling answers!

Favorite Color(s) - I like soothing teal ocean colors as a general rule although since I fully embraced my Hufflepuffy-ness I have an affinity for yellow, especially in the fall, and I stubbornly wear it even though it doesn’t look the best with my skin tone.

Last song I listened to: Not sure but as I have been binge-listening to Folklore it was probably something from that album, or something from Sleeping at Last or Panic! at the Disco. But it’s almost time for my Halloween playlist because my music tastes have to reflect the mood of the season or it makes me feel uncomfortable. I just found out a friend literally puts her WHOLE ASS MUSIC LIBRARY on shuffle and listens to it that way. Christmas music, and classical music, and rap music just all one after another, it’s utter madness and makes me panic to think about.

Last film I watched: I am usually watching shows not movies so the last one I watched was The Old Guard and I have not stopped thinking about it sense.

Last TV show I watched: Finally started season 5 of Lucifer last night!! Although before that I was getting my grandma to watch The Good Place with me and now I kinda want to watch that all over again. 

Favorite character(s) - Oof. There is literally no solid answer to this. Roswell is of course my Tumblr obsession but I always have a soft spot for grumpy characters who are deeply traumatized and in pain and really just need someone to love and care for them. (There is a reason Hufflepuffs and Slytherins make good friends). I just know what it’s like to feel lonely and like no one understands and putting up a prickly guard because I only love by whole measures. Everyone deserves love and hugs and by golly! I volunteer as tribute to give it to them! I also love sunshine characters though, like Barry from The Flash and Kara from Supergirl. I need the balance.

Pets: Two adorable Caviler King Charles Spaniels Vincent and Rory who are brothers and soooo sweet, and three cats. Jasmine who came with the house we bought and is old but very sweet and shy. Persephone who is almost a year old and a shelter rescue. She is a black and gold calico who loves me sooo much and purrs at me at all times and snuggles her face into my hand and then drools on me, but also weirdly likes to smoosh the side of her face into my face and occasionally nips at my nose or lip if I’m not careful (she pulled my lip ring out once since it didn’t have the balls on). And Angelo, a kitten my mom got that was found abandoned under a porch. He is white with blue eyes and it starting to get orange spots on his feet, tail, and ears. He loves to snag toes and is an adorable little monster.

Sweet, Savory, or Spicy food? I like the idea of sweet foods, and I love to look at them and think about them, but I really, really love salty, savory, spicy foods. It’s the New Mexican in me. Breakfast should always include green chile and I will literally never, ever turn down potatoes. I also put red pepper flakes and/or Siracha on most things. I also love a good salty/sweet, or spicy/sweet combo!

Favorite Book(s): Too much data. Does not compute. I don’t read as many books as I used to because my brain is being difficult but fanfic, specifically the RNM fandom has single-handedly saved my reading life. But if pressed to answer the question, Lord of the Rings is what I usually go with for my favorite book(s). The last one just fills me with an aching bittersweetness so I haven’t read it in awhile. I’m a big fan of fantasy and escapist reading so I have a lot of favorites but LOTR really kicked it all off for me.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Ben and Jerry’s Coffee Heath Bar Crunch is my eternal favorite but I don’t splurge very often. I also love mint, coconut, a really good vanilla bean, and various sorbets. 

One Thing On Your Bucket List: I don’t have one because the idea stresses me out but I’m currently working on updating my room and once I replace the window (should be arriving by the end of the month, yay!), and cover the popcorn ceiling, and paint, and strip the carpet out and redo the floors, and get a bed frame with drawers so I can ditch the dresser and have more space (wheeew, I’m tired just thinking about all of that) THEN I want to put in an infrared sauna (Like what Tyler Blackburn has, I’m sure you all remember THAT photo). As a general “things I want to do” list I would like to travel more, but that gives me a lot of anxiety and planning is very stressful for me. I also got lost in the grocery store a few times as a tiny child and still have a weird panic about getting lost so I’m still looking for a life partner to be my travel buddy so I can actually enjoy seeing things. Also, if I end my life covered in nerdy tattoos, that would be a plus. I’m working on it but the pandemic has thrown off my yearly tattoo schedule. 

Favorite Festival(s): I...I do not generally attend festivals as they are loud and full of people and there aren’t a lot where I live, but there is a corn maze in the fall about an hour away and we always go do that which is fun. I need to find some arts and crafts festivals though because I do love that kind of stuff and they aren’t so noisy and it’s usually full of nice old ladies and dapper millennials which I can deal with.

I feel weird about tagging people because I always feel pushy or like I’m bothering people who already did it (hello, middle child syndrome), but I do like doing these things and if you want to do it too, feel free!

Supergirl: Kara Danvers - Type 2w1

Type 2s are known as the Helper. They have a basic desire to be needed and loved and a basic fear of being unwanted or unworthy of being loved. Type 2s are caring, friendly, generous and people-pleasing. At their best, type 2s are unselfish and unconditionally love those around them with no strings attached. At their worst, Type 2s can become possessive, manipulative and will often give to get. 

Kara has always wanted to help people, and will always put the feelings of others above her own, which epitomises a healthy 2. At her best, Kara is selfless and sacrificing, for example, she sends Mon-El away for the greater good, despite wanting him to stay with her on Earth.

At her worst, Kara can be dismissive and aggressive to those closest to her. At the beginning of s3, she is depressed because she had to send Mon-El away, so she pushes away Alex, J’onn and Lena. However, she starts to become more comfortable in her relationships with the other characters and stops relying on others for her happiness.

We also see some of Kara’s inner resentments when she is on Red K, as she begins pushing people away and telling them what she really thought about them. Her real feelings about Cat and Alex come to the surface, as Kara usually suppresses these emotions to spare their feelings. This often happens with 2s, as they are usually people pleasers and hide their real feelings from others to preserve their relationships.

Another hallmark of 2s are their positive outlook and their ability to see the best in people. Kara always tries to see the best in Lena, despite Alex and other characters constantly telling her that she is a lost cause or inherently evil. This is one of Kara’s best traits, and helps her form close relationships with others.

She has a strong wing 1, as most of her motivations are informed by her sense of right and wrong. She always tries to do the right thing, however, she will still try to help people even if it goes against her morals. When everyone thought Reign was too dangerous and that she needed to be killed, regardless of Sam’s presence in her body, Kara fought for another way.

Reflecting on 2020

The strangest thing about 2020 was how familiar much of it felt: Working from home, extended periods of isolation, weeks and months blending together. To a much lesser degree, those are things I experience each year as a freelancer. And while I suspect it will take awhile before the full extent of the trauma we’ve all lived through this year fully sets in, right now I’m mostly focused on gratitude. I’m grateful for the health of my loved ones. Grateful I already had a work-from-home routine to maintain during the pandemic. And grateful that I was able to quarantine with my family for much of the year—which had its challenges but also its rewards too.

In my 2019 year-end post I wrote about feeling like my career was finally on an upward trajectory after several years of plateauing. This year obviously offered some new wrinkles in that regard. I made significantly less money and felt familiar fears about how sustainable this career actually is. But having less work also gave me more time to focus on the actual craft of writing. I feel like I reached a new level in terms of voice, clarity, and the ability to self-edit. I'm the sort of person who constantly (arguably, obsessively) strives to be better, and it’s rewarding to feel like that hard work is finally slowly starting to pay off.

In addition to devoting my quarantine time to mastering a favorite curry recipe, getting really into the Enneagram, finally learning to French braid hair, and rewatching all of New Girl, I also had some really cool opportunities scattered throughout the year. I interviewed John Barrowman about his surprise return to Doctor Who, which felt like a real milestone for me. I also contributed to the Los Angeles Times’ list of TV shows to binge-watch during quarantine, which appeared both online and in print. And thanks to everything going virtual this year, I was able to attend a press panel for the fifth season of This Is Us, which is the sort of thing I’m not usually able to do as a Chicago-based critic. 

My career is always a juggling act between film and TV, and this year made me appreciate how valuable it is to be able to move seamlessly between both worlds. I took on new TV assignments covering the first season of Stargirl and the second season of The Umbrella Academy, both of which were a blast to write about. And while I didn’t watch quite as many films as I did in my insane catch-up year last year, I did fill in some more major blindspots. I also contributed to The A.V. Club’s list of the best films of 2000 and shared my own ballot over on Letterboxd. Oh, and I set up a Letterboxd this year too!

Elsewhere, I made my debut on Bustle and The Takeout, and ended the year with a Polygon article about “Kind Movies” that pretty much sums up my entire ethos on storytelling. I was also named a Top Critic by Rotten Tomatoes, which was a real honor. But the pride and joy of my career remains my rom-com column, When Romance Met Comedy. I devoted a whopping 49,000 words to analyzing 25 different romantic comedies this year. And I’m really pleased with how the column has grown and with the positive feedback I’ve received.

I have to admit, I sometimes worry that year-end highlight reels like this one can make my life seem easy or glamorous in a way that doesn’t reflect what it’s like to actually live through it. I'm tremendously lucky to get to do what I do, but I also struggle a lot—both with the logistics of this career and with bigger questions about what value it brings to the world. My goal is to approach 2021 with a greater sense of intentionality. I want to be more thoughtful in my career choices, more purposeful in how I use social media, and more active in my activism and politics. I’d also like to do 20 push-ups a day everyday for the whole year, but we’ll see how long that resolution actually lasts.

Finally, on a sadder note, one other defining experience of the year was the loss of my dear internet friend Seb Patrick, who I’ve known for years through the Cinematic Universe podcast. Seb created a wonderfully positive nerd space online, and was a big part of my early quarantine experience thanks to the Avengers watchalongs I did with the CU gang in the spring. I’m so grateful for all the fun pop culture chats we got to have throughout the years, several of which are linked below. Seb is tremendously missed, and there’s a fund for his family here.

Hey Charity! First of, congratulations on your book, I just finished it a few days ago. Still digesting it since I've been through various phases in my life that scew my perception of true me but I believe it's really helpful and a great guide for anyone to revisit, thank you so much for writing it!

I was wondering if Clark and Lois are in Justice League/Batman vs Superman (or other incarnations for that matter, like the original Superman movies, "Lois and Clark" or Superman and Lois/Supergirl) the same types they were in Smallville. And kind of a reverse question for Lex, which type have you encountered him being the most? Is Justice League an exception to the rule or the norm?

Dang. I knew I forgot someone -- Clark Kent! I even went back and re-watched Batman vs. Superman to refresh my memory and then forgot. Such is my life. :P He's an ISFJ 2w1 in this franchise, but he's usually an ESFJ with the same Enneagram type. Lois Lane is almost always ENP (usually ENFP -- the idealist who thinks she can change the world with her words); except in Smallville, where she's an ESTP.

Lex is almost always an NTP, I think. I haven't seen the original Christopher Reeve movies, so I can't comment on him there, but he seemed to use Fe and Ti in the Lois & Clark series from the 90s, and I don't buy his scheme to turn the earth into Krypton 2 in the Brandon Routhe version as all that ETJ-ish. Naturally, my favorite is the INTJ version from Smallville, where he wasn't a ridiculous cartoon villain with some nonsensical plot up his sleeve but actually had visible motives and goals with tangible results.

I've only seen a couple episodes of Superman and Lois, so I can't comment on that. It's a pain to stream it through the app, so I'm waiting until the library gets a copy. I can say, however, that their boys are SPs in that -- one is an ESTP and the other is a 4-core ISFP.

literal meaning: “counsel” “Twin”

symbolic meaning: Bruce named him after his two fathers. He wanted to honor Alfred for taking care of him all those years.

MBTI: ISTJ (The Logistician)

Enneagram: Type 3 (The Achiever)

5:How tall are they?

5′11 and a half, but he tells himself he’s 6′0

His eyes fluctuate between a gorgeous hazel-green with golden undertones and a light brown.

9:What are their parents names? Did they know their parents?

Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. 

He never met Bruce, although his dad named him and left him an entire corporation. His mom though, he knew for the first ten years of his life, growing up with her teaching him some of her tricks. That all came to an end when she was placed in Arkham Prison though.

11:Are they an early bird or a night owl?

Night Owl. It’s the one time where nobody will bother him, plus when else is he going to hop around stopping crime?

13:Do they prefer the heat or the cold?

Alfie grew up in Gotham and he grew up in the cold. That doesn’t mean he likes it though.

He prefers the sunshine of National City (cause they didn’t get any in Gotham) even if it gives him bad heatstroke during the summer.

15:Are they in a relationship/have a crush on someone?

He is currently crushing/will end up with on Kara Danvers (aka Supergirl!) 

at the beginning of chaos theory, he is in a casual relationship with Lena Luthor of L-Corp, but it ends quickly.

17:Do they prefer coffee or tea?

Coffee, coffee, coffee. His entire bloodstream is practically all black coffee and caffeine at this point. He can’t function without it.

19:Do they have any hobbies?

Other than secret vigilanteism, saving the world, and running an entire company…

He loves to draw and paint. His mom would always encourage it and Commissioner Gordon would buy him new art kits for Christmas each year.

It’s one of his only outlets and one of the only ways for him to calm down when he’s stressed or panicky.

Air. Alfie is detached, all mind, and highly values his freedom. He craves intellectual stimulation and is able to be objective, even if it hurts others’ feelings.

23:Do they drink alcohol?

He’s a Wayne...You bet your ass he drinks alcohol.

25:How do they see themselves?

He sees himself as the person he wants least to be. Alfie sees himself as his father, a playboy with parental issues who takes it out on the world around them. He doesn’t think very highly of himself and chooses to focus on trying as hard as possible to distance himself from Bruce, not realizing that in doing so, he’s becoming exactly like him.

In reality, he’s more like his mother.
