Does J'onn's beloved bartender have any relatives in Gotham that make family dinners incredibly, incredibly awkward... or is the last name just an unfortunate coincidence?
I'm pretty sure both martians would have that same doubt, but while J'onn tries to avoid the subject in order for it not to get weird, Ma'al doesn't hesitate
Jonathan Crane and Al Crane are distant cousins! Jonathan is a child of an affair, and was raised by his grandmother on his mom's side. He went by his maiden name "Keeny" until college where he switched his surname to "Crane". While they both grew up in Georgia, Al and Jonathan didn't get to actually meet each other until they both studied in Gotham College as roommates. People give them weird looks because they don't look related.
Tumblr media
They get along! Al is one of the few family members Jonathan tolerates. Al eventually moves to Denver to be a bartender while Jonathan becomes a psychology professor in Gotham. They stay in touch. Al doesn't know anything about the Scarecrow stuff.
Tumblr media
Ma'al jumped to an entirely different conclusion about their relationship.

from the vein of the six degrees of kevin bacon, i love to play the six degrees of the arrowverse, with the idea that anyone or anything can be related back to the arrowverse within six degrees. okay some examples:
the 1997 Cinderella is one degree away from the arrowerse, because it stars Victor Garber and he was also in Legends
Queen Elizabeth II is two degrees away, as her son is King Charles and King Charles appears as a character in Legends
RADA, a famous drama school in the UK, is one degree away, as their president is David Harewood, who was in Supergirl
Miley Cyris is two degrees away, as Dominic Purcell is her stepdad now, and he was in Legends
please add your own weird arrowverse links in the replies and the reblogs!! i think we can encompass the whole world if we try!!

"We're enemies."
"That seems a bit silly since you physically can't kill me. And besides, 'enemies' is a two-way street and I rather like you!"
"We're arch-enemies and I hate you."
"Are you telling me this to convince yourself? You're certainly not convincing me. I think you're just grouchy because you haven't had any lunch yet."
"You're the one following me!! I've been trying to kill you for weeks!"
"Well, what else is a demi-god supposed to do, haunt the local church? Boriiiing. And your attempts to kill me have been laughable at best, you haven't even tried poisons. Admit it, I'm growing on you."
"Growing as a pain in my ass!"
"You know, I certainly could, but I don't think you'd find it painful."
They crest the final hill before the great port city. Plains roll out before them, green and lush after the spring rains. The great chiming of bells can be heard even here. There's salt and destiny on the air and a storm building at sea, great clouds of greys mounting on the horizon. Their crops will grow plentiful this season.
Her traveling companion draws a deep breath, perhaps smelling the change on the wind.
"Would poisons even work?"
And perhaps not.
"No."

Lena, a lonely metro ticket clerk, saves her crush's life, but due to a series of misunderstandings, she finds herself building a relationship with his family and falling in love with the victim's sister.
Read on AO3
I edited the two existing chapters and, hopefully, will post the rest accordingly, if covid lets me continue with my life.
A little excerpt beneath the cut:
“I’ll see you all tomorrow, I think.”
“No, Lena, wait!” Eliza calls her and stops her, “Wait, I hope I’m not stepping in, or into any plans you may already have, but even though it’s not how we would have wanted it to happen, we want to invite you to have Christmas dinner with us.”
Lena chooses to ignore the pull in her heart and warmth spreading in her chest, “That is so nice of all of you, but...”
“Please, we would love to have you there.”
But she can’t ignore the sting in her eyes where the tears are starting to fill.
“Plus you haven’t met Kara,” Hank says
“That’s right,” Alex interjects, “And you have to try my mom’s special egg nog”
“I...” they all look at her, in a different kind of expectation than they did earlier, so in a quiet voice she says, “I would love to.”
“Great! Give me your number, I’ll text you the address.” Nia offers.
“Thank you all.” she says after the number exchange is done, “I guess I will go home and then meet you there.”

So I spent my tween-early teen years watching the CW Arrowverse shows because that was my mom's version of soap operas and one of the Arrowverse shows was always on the tv
I decided to rewatch those and it really shouldn't shock my mom I turned out to be queer
When my two favorite characters were Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow) and Winn (Supergirl) I was bound to like girls
they're still my two favorite characters...

These folks watched a whole ass movie not realizing the main character was transgender and it was a 2 second kiss between men that made them lose their ever-loving minds.
It's amazing to me that if it weren't for those 2 seconds, many of these folks would have given this movie a 4 or 5 star review. But two seconds of the most vanilla, non-sexy, yet genuine and loving kiss somehow ruined every moment of enjoyment the previous 90 minutes brought them.
Imagine if they realized the trans allegory. I wish I had a way to tell them. I wish I had a way to make them realize they related to a trans character. That they rooted for them. That they accidentally empathized with a trans story.
This was a beautiful movie. In every sense. I really hope between this and Spider-Verse, we can have a moratorium on every 3D animated movie using this style of character design.
Tumblr media
It's time to let go of the rubber toy look.
I love Toy Story, but its success kind of doomed 3D animation to never take any risks. I thought maybe it was just a limitation of the medium, and perhaps it was for a time... but after seeing Love Death + Robots and Arcane...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I realized they can make 3D animation look however the hell they want now.
The rubber people were just risk avoidance.
"That's what people are used to and so we're sticking with it."
But the real beauty of Nimona was the story. I won't spoil it but the plot is pretty much, "If you get to know a trans person, you probably won't hate them anymore."
Not knowing any trans people is one of the biggest factors in anti-trans bigotry. And so this movie uses allegory to let an audience get to know a trans person. And you get to experience someone slowly start to understand what it is to be trans from an outside perspective.
It's sad that will probably be lost on those folks above because all they will remember is the kiss. Seriously, it was such a harmless, mundane, blink-and-you-miss-it kiss. But I'm hoping that others will take the lesson of this movie to heart. That you should get to know people before you judge them.
Part of me does wish we could tell trans stories without allegory. That we could just have overt trans characters. But I think this is the best representation possible right now.
It's crazy that Supergirl was one of the bravest shows as far as modern trans representation. It wasn't an edgy HBO drama trying to push boundaries. It was a family-friendly superhero show and they were just like, "Here is a transgender woman with superpowers and it's fine." And I loved that it was part of the character but it wasn't all the character was. Though I think they just missed the manufactured "moral panic" window where that choice would have been extremely controversial causing boycotts of Warner Bros. and whatnot.
My only complaint about Nimona was a small penis joke. It went by very quickly and many may even miss it. But I was surprised to see it in this movie in particular. Especially since those jokes can have collateral damage toward trans folks. With all of the positive messages, wasting a joke on body shaming was a tad disappointing. I mean, it was a fairly lighthearted "Is it cold in here?" joke. I don't want to make it sound worse than it was. But it still registered on my Richter scale of things that bother me.
Anyway, I wholeheartedly give Nimona a 5 out of 5. It helped me understand my friends on a deeper level and it was warm and funny and entertaining. There was a scene at the end that was so beautiful and heart-wrenching and I was crying my eyes out. The animation and the symbolism and the acting were just so perfect.
It's a shame Disney tried to kill this movie. But I am so glad it was allowed to exist despite that.
