1BR (2020)

You think 1BR is going to be one thing. Then it surprises you. That obvious threat? not what you thought it was. Then it surprises you again. This horror film is not the kind you’d expect.

New to Los Angeles, Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom) moves into a tight-knit apartment complex. Everyone seems so nice but someone has problems with their new neighbor. Strange noises at night, threatening notes slipped beneath the door…  what she thought would be an idyllic home isn’t.

The turns 1BR takes come early but the less you know, the better. Ultimately, writer/director David Marmor's story is about being trapped and powerless. Sarah came to LA to escape her father (Alan Blumenfeld), whom she resents. At her new job, Sarah's boss looks down upon her and takes advantage of her inability to stand up for herself. Unfortunately, quitting isn't an option for obvious reasons and because it would take her away from her only friend outside the apartment complex, Lisa (Celeste Sully). Someone in the community she’s joined doesn’t want her there. As an outsider, there's nothing she can do about it. From there, her imprisonment gets worse. You put yourself in her shoes. You fantasize about what you would do to escape her situation but the obstacles she faces are so daunting... You become unable to see any way to break free. You feel powerless. Despair engulfs your soul. Sarah/You want to give up. Maybe resisting isn't worth it. Surely you’ll become acclimated to the situation or some natural phenomenon will fix everything.

Then you remember that this is a horror movie. 1BR puts you and Sarah through the wringer. Your resolve simultaneously strengthens because you want her to pay back all the people who are making her suffer - with violence. It also weakens because you realize there’s only so much one person can take and that ultimately, we’re all so small compared to everything that's out there. The film goes to a place other filmmakers usually set outside of the present or somewhere not as “ordinary” as a major city. This choice is what makes 1BR so frightening. The horror is not in some faraway land or time, it’s right now. It’s using modern tools and modern-day anxieties to make you sweat. It's done in a way that seems so very plausible. It could even be happening right now and if you found out that it was, you'd be out of luck. It would be too late to change anything.

1BR is the complete package. You get all of the scares and anxiety you’d want out of a horror movie. You also get a fulfilling character arc from our heroine. It makes you think about what you would do in her situation, satisfies your bloodlust, makes your palms itch, creeps you out, fills you with paranoia, and surprises you. (November 1, 2020)
