Suzanna Clarke's Piranesi is a tour de force of imagination and a masterclass in voice, setting, foreshadowing, and retrospective inevitability.
It's also vaguely Machen-esque, if Machen were to have written hidden places that were also beautiful and full of light and nourishing, even while they're also really dangerous.

Another book cover design I did ages and ages ago for Piranesi, by Suzanna Clarke. I do think this was possibly one of the most beautiful and emotional books I’ve ever read. Recommend forever.

Vestibule of an ancient temple . . . (Vestibolo d'antico Tempio . . .) Giovanni Battista Piranesi Italianca. 1743–50) From the Met.
I read Suzanna Clarke’s 2020 novel Piranesi recently and was reminded of other stories of isolation. Andy Weir’s sci fi stories of being lost in space, where the hero uses their wits to survive alone. Also the story of isolation and revenge, as in Park Chan-Wook’s Old Boy, where the hero focuses on their hatred to survive. Piranesi is a book whose hero uses their wit, yes. The hero even contemplates revenge. But in the end, the hero sees beauty in the world, beauty that is immeasurable. That is enough.

Just read Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke. THIS BOOK WAS SO F'ING GOOD I SWEAR I'M GONNA MAKE IT MY WHOLE PERSONALITY. It reminds me so much of my dreams from when I was younger and a place I like to escape to when daydreaming. I loved it so much.
It's a definite must read.
I would also like recommendations of similar books plss

Review: Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke
Review: Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke
Goodreads | Waterstones Piranesi’s house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he…

Hello.
I’m an oil painter with a life goal of writing a novel. When I submitted a few short scenes to a critique group (I made clear that I was not a writer), they were constructive and helpful but, surprisingly, they all indicated that I had an old style of writing. I’m not sure what that means, as I have never thought of style.
They were trying to say, I believe, that my “style” of writing isn’t popular today and wouldn’t sell, but sounded good. (One said poetic.).
So - my question:
What are a couple of great novels that are not written in a modern way that you’d recommend I read?
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, by Suzanna Clarke and Little, Big by John Crowley.

New book stickers have arrived!
I was thinking of which book opinions I needed represented in sticker form before drawing these, the books that first came to mind for each are as follows (all opinions entirely my own):
Either Adored or Loathed This, Not Sure: The Magicians by Lev Grossman- what a brilliant story filled with such unreadably unlikeable characters!
I Need to Read the Sequel Immediately: I have so far started all of the next Robin Hobb books the minute after finishing the previous one. I can't actually sustain that pace unfortunately because they're all 900 pages long.
Extremely Sad, But in a Good Way: All of my favourite books are this- most particularly the Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteridge books and Marilynne Robinson's Gilead books
Loved, Loved, Loved This Book: The last book I immediately decided was my favourite before I even finished it was The Fortnight in September by RC Sheriff, in which nothing happens except an English family goes on holiday in the 30's. Fucking brilliant.
So Good That I Bought a Fancy Special Edition: The only fancy special edition I own is His Dark Materials, it is indeed very good and important and wonderful.
Shouldn't Have Bought This, Never Going to Read it: 90% of the non-fiction books I buy that aren't about the Beatles sit unread and unloved. I have been meaning to read SPQR by Mary Beard for several years..
Didn't Understand a Word of This: I read 200 pages of Darkmans by Nicola Barker when I was at university and tried to reads the whole Booker longlist once. It made me feel like I'd forgotten how to read English
Relevant to All of My Very Specific Interests: I read Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke in one sitting, slack jawed in surprise at how exactly 'for me' it was. Unreliable narrator! No real explanation as to what is going on! A fantasy about characters rather than medieval England-ish settings and magic systems! So so fantastic.
This Has Not Aged Well: I pushed my way through to the end of American Pastoral by Phillip Roth, but my word.
How about you?

Then Because She Goes
★ Matty Healy x Original Female Character
★ slow burn, friends to lovers, mutual pining, eventual romance, eventual smut, fluff, time skips, angst
★ 15 Chapters, 74243 words
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Well, she says beauty brings copies of itself into being. That it makes us draw it, take photographs of it, describe it to other people—it has a forward momentum. And I always thought that that was a sort of—superficial, I guess—way of putting it. But I feel that when I’m with you. Almost like I want to savour you up so that the minute you’re gone there’s still some of you left.”
From meeting in a second-hand bookshop in central Manchester, Este and Matty begin exchanging questionable (and pretentious) book recommendations and flourish an alluring interest in one another.
1: You are mine, I’ve been drowning in you
2: You fracture light again
3: Beautiful, please don’t cry, I love you
4: When you leave, I cry on the inside
5: I wake up, love you, so love you, love you
6: Cry, I wake up, love you, love you
7: We’re supposed to leave by half-past eight*
8: You wait for a bit
9: Pissed again, I’ve been dying to meet you
10: You fracture light again (Ooh), I love you, oh, love you*
11: When you leave, I cry on the inside*
12: Oh, so I love this, I love you, so love you
13: Cry, I will love you, love you, love you
14: We’re supposed to leave by half-past eight
15: Will you stay or wait?*

All-Star Superman and Lois Lane
After being discovered by the US government, baby Kal K. was given to Agents Martha Clarke and John Kent, raising him as "Ma" and "Pa" Kent. However, operation head General Sam Lane couldn't foresee two eventual problems: Clarke and Kent's legitimate affection for the child, and his own daughter's whistleblowing on the his illegal activities. Helping the young couple escape, Clarke and Kent sacrificed themselves to give Kal the chance at a real life.
Kal and Lois spent months on the run, eventually falling in with The Planet, an activist group working to disrupt the activities of the Apex mega corporation, itself tied to the captivity of Kal and others like him. Lois's journalistic skills and Kal's superhuman abilities--speed, strength, able to leap miles into the air--proved a powerful combination, drawing other activists like Suzanna Hawke (The Green Arrow) and Arthur Shin (The Aquaman) to their cause.
At the same time, Kal discovered a new aspect to his powers: he could access a "Phantom Zone" brimming with ethereal beings. They would impart knowledge and power to him, bolstering his physical strength with strange visions, superheated beams of light, and eventually the power of flight. Chief among the phantoms was someone or something named Zod, and he had vested interest in Kal and the secret of his origins.
Kal shared that interest, but he had more important things on his mind. Namely, working to assure a better world for his partner and the child they were now eagerly awaiting...

Tagged by @viss-and-pinegar 🙏
I tag @kookaburra1701 @nientedenada @mongoose-bite and @expended-sleeper
1) Describe one creative WIP project you’re planning to work on over the summer.
I'm honestly hoping to finish up Halfway to the Sky. It's been a strong bullet point on my To Do list for a while now, but my writing drive absolutely dried up. Which I know by now means that something about the story needs to change. And I think I know what it's gonna be.
Otherwise I'd love to crack into that Dark Brotherhood-centric fic that's brewing in my brain.
2) Rec a book:
I will forever and always recommend "Piranesi" by Suzanna Clarke. Absolutely changed me.
3) Rec a fic:
"Far from Ourselves" by Babble
It's a heavy one, so tread carefully.
4) Rec music:
I've been listening to a lot of Hozier. Do I really need to recommend Hozier? I feel like anyone even remotely queer or poetic loves that guy.
5) Share one piece of advice.
Whatever you're feeling right now isn't forever! All conditions are impermanent. Life is constant change, nothing lasts, not even happiness, so find peace in this present moment. :)
