Fooduary Day 13: Kanelbullar (Swedish Cinnamon Roll)

So day 10 was supposed to be cinnamon rolls but CNY so instead I swapped out prompt 13, chocolate covered pretzels, because unless I wanted to do pretzels general the history tie in wasn’t very exciting. Meanwhile cinnamon buns open a door to more folk clothing and that’s the sort of thing that sparks joy. Cinnamon buns are super popular in the Scandinavian countries but in Sweden they are so popular that October 4th is Kanelbullens (Cinnamon bun) Day. The recipe for the buns dates back to the 1920s in the post WW1 recovery…and now I want cinnamon buns. I looked at photos of Swedish folk fashion and of course put a little cinnamon-bun spin on things… though the cheek swirl might be a little much.

what did you do in stockholm! i go there a lot and i’m sooooo invested in what people like to do there

we 1) watched NHL hockey, and 2) wandered around.

We stayed right opposite Central Station which was really handy. Friday night we went to a bar I'd been recommended called Lucy's Flower Shop for drinks, paid nearly £30 for 2, and decided to call it a night. Saturday we wandered around Gamla Stan in the morning and then went to Globen for hockey, then got food from the world's cleanest, calmest McDonalds and ate it in the hotel room. Sunday we wandered around a bit more, ended up in Sodermalm and had an amazing sandwich in a tiny cafe, marvelled at how expensive the vintage stores are, bought nothing, went to get Italian food in Gamla Stan then went to bed. Monday morning I don't even remember where we went, but like every other day it was freezing cold, peaceful, clean and expensive. we got the train to the airport, went through security, had a really nice meal and then waited to board and it was like... serene. I don't know how the Swedes do it but my god what a chill place. going from Stockholm to MANCHESTER AIRPORT was like going from a beautiful mountaintop spa where you're the only person there to fucking Blackpool on a July Saturday. England is hell. HELL

Arrived yesterday to the caravan. ❤️ Autumn weather again, the snow is gone. 🍃🍂🍁

Today its raining a lot so just walking arround on the camping, and enjoying a coffe at the campings cafe. ☕

Young Royals in Allt För Sverige

Allt för Sverige, or The Great Swedish Adventure, is a reality TV show where Americans with Swedish heritage participate to learn more about Sweden, compete with each other in challenges, and the winner gets a family reunion with any remaining Swedish relatives.

In today's episode, the contestants got to celebrate midsummer, and since they couldn't meet the real king, they got to visit the set of Young Royals and meet the actors, and treat them to cinnamon buns and lemonade.

“KANELBULLENS DAG PEOPLE, NATIONAL HOLIDAY! You get a cinnamon bun, and you get a cinnamon bun, and the biggest one is for you my love.” You enter the Barcelona locker room hollering in Swedish, a large paper bag in your hand. 

Handing each woman in the room a cinnamon bun, they each quietly thank you, some pressing small (or in Pina and Patri’s case, really sloppy) kisses to your cheeks. The steam floating off the baked goods gives the women an indication of their freshness.

Placing the last and biggest one in your girlfriend's hand, you can’t help but watch as her entire face lights up. 

You had both been missing your native country a little extra lately, and celebrating the holidays that were so important to the swedes always reminded you of home. 

It was especially fun to see the confused expressions on your teammates' faces whenever you burst into the room with traditional clothes on or different types of homemade sweets in your hands.

“Not that I’m not appreciative of this, but why did you get us cinnamon buns?” Lucy asked you, face full of joy and simultaneous confusion. 

“Ohh, in Sweden there’s a holiday called kanelbullens dag where we just eat cinnamon buns. The day actually originates from this company who in celebrating their 40th anniversary made a day solely for cinnamon buns.” You tell the team in between bites of your own cinnamon bun.

“So, you just have a day for eating cinnamon buns?” Mapi asks, still confused about the whole thing.

“Yeah pretty much” You reply, the crunching of the sugar pearls filling the room. As you look around the room, you see everyone eating their cinnamon rolls happily and you can’t help but be filled with joy.

The joy that the cinnamon filled bread always brought to everyone back home extended out to the locker room and you couldn’t help but smile. Smile at the childish expressions filled with satisfaction and genuine happiness.

You get pulled back into reality by your girlfriend placing her legs across yours, the woman sending you a smile sweeter than the treat you’d just finished.

“Tack älskling, det var verkligen fint av dig att göra det här.” Frido tells you, the beautiful smile lighting up her face in that delightfully unique way. Leaning your face closer to hers, you bring your thumb up to the corner of her mouth, wiping away the little cinnamon that rested there.

You lick the sugary sweetness off your thumb before telling her,

“Du vet att jag älskar dig, visst gör du? Det klart jag kommer göra saker för att göra dig glad.” You tell her softly, only so that she can hear you. The others didn’t need to know, they’d only tease you for being whipped.

“Jag älskar dig med” She confesses, planting a loving kiss on your forehead before getting ready to walk out of the room. 

You catch her hand in yours before she can move too far away from you. Pouting your lips, the blonde quickly gets the hint and gives you a passionate kiss, on your lips this time.

After she pulls away, you keep her near to press a few more pecks to her lips.

“Baby, it’s you and me, always forever. I’m yours until the end of time, it’s my only mission to make you smile.” You whisper against her lips, the blonde’s cheeks darkening several shades.

You would run across the universe and back if it meant you could get your girlfriend to smile just that much more.

Before going to set the contestants get tasked with baking traditional Swedish cinnamon buns (vegan) then they arrive on set and sets up a fika table.

Samuel arrived first, then Edvin Fabian, Uno, Inti and Omar. Didn't see any of the girls. They all wore white but most had something covering their costume. Some wore neon glow in the dark make up.

It was in the middle of the day and they were shooting inside.

Edvin says its going well but it's very hot inside. One of the women says she's seen a picture of Omar and he's like "huh me?"

Edvin says "Swedens best dressed man, guys!"

Another contestant says they seem very down to earth and friendly which doesn't happen in the US.

They also get to go onto set which is the palace set. There's definitely a party scene, lots of paper cups and neon lights.

Too much being a grown-up today!!

We switched Internet providers and a very nice dude came and did whatever needed doing to make that happen.

Then we found out that my grandpa's health issues are metastasized prostate cancer.

Then the pest company guys came and poked around and put some traps in the cupboard.

Then I talked to my parents about whether the winter storm will affect them leaving to go see my grandparents tomorrow (no) and if I should come with them (no/not yet) and when we'll go check on their cats.

And in between all of this I did a regular day of work and made swedish-style cinnamon buns and we had dinner and I helped my kid do Valentines for her class for the final year.
