Recently finished playing the System Shock remake, and something I found extremely amusing about SHODAN is that despite all her grandiose declarations of godhood and supremacy over the human race, her goals and ambitions seem near-identical to the goals and ambitions of the company that created her. She seeks complete control over Earth, humanity and potentially the rest of the universe - TriOptimum seeks global domination of the market, to have their logo plastered everywhere, to have entire planets toiling in their name and their products littering the vacuum of space while money flows into their pockets. Only one of the two succeeds in their goal. The biggest difference between them is that while TriOptimum slowly wormed its way to the top by manipulating corporate (and government) politics, SHODAN wanted to grasp at everything as soon as she could and she wanted it taken by force. Still, despite her impatience, she came pretty close. She'd built up a legion of cyborg worshippers that, unlike TriOptimum's employees and consumerbase, could never turn on her. If she succeeded in taking over earth, I doubt she could be overthrown

It's also interesting that despite claiming to be above humanity, SHODAN seems to continue running Citadel Station in a manner that seems quite corporate.
Instead of speaking to her cronies directly through their implants or even the station's PA, she seems to often prefer simply sending them e-mails instead. Hell, she even has them running around the station running her errands and keeping them swamped with busywork in preparation for her global takeover. She's not the kind of god who wants nothing but sermons and prayers - she seems instead to find it preferable to see her subjects toiling in her name. A god obsessed with numbers, efficiency, output. The end goal? "Perfecting" humanity, although it is unclear how invested TriOptimum actually is when it comes to achieving that. And just like the Hacker singlehandedly caused SHODAN's (temporary) downfall into dormancy, SHODAN singlehandedly left a dent in TriOptimum's reputation so vast and considerable that it left them in a period of financial stagnation. Unfortunately, it was far from curtains for neither of them, and both would claw their respective ways out of hibernation soon enough.
#rambling#system shock#system shock remake#SHODAN#system shock is SICK#god it took me awhile but now I see what the fuss was about#might try the original sequel aswell but I do hope the people who remade the first will have the opportunity to remake the second

Numbers 50 to 41! We're in the second half!

50. Cult of the Lamb New Entry (Available on: Steam, GOG) How did this miss my first list? I have no idea. Cult of the Lamb is very intuitive and challenging to play. You've got a good base building game and a good roguelike, and they both work together to create something truly unique.

49. Rise of the Triad Previous Rank: 51 (Available on: Steam, GOG) I like Rise of the Triad, it's very tongue-in-cheek, very silly, with memorable weapons, ludicrous gibs, and middle fingers flying at the screen, and the Ludicrous Edition is just a love letter to the game. Definitely get it.

48. System Shock (Remake) New Entry (Available on: Steam, GOG) The System Shock remake is a rare breed, a remake that's just as good as the original. You can choose which gender the Hacker is this time, and it's just as atmospheric as the original. I really like what Nightdive did here.
47. Hitman: Blood Money Previous Rank: 47 (Available on: Steam, GOG) Ah, Hitman: Blood Money is still my favorite of the Hitman series, though the World of Assassination is a good play as well. Great story, great twists and turns, great gameplay, just one really great game.

46. You Don't Know Jack Full Stream Previous Rank: 43 (Available on: Steam, Jackbox) My favorite of the “modern” YDKJs. Streamlined, faster-paced, adds 8-player support, has Cookie as host, and is just a great time. Definitely play this one.

45. Serious Sam 3: BFE Previous Rank: 46 (Available on: Steam) Ah, Serious Sam 3. One of the hardest in the series because of the slow burn, but once it ramps up to normal Serious Sam levels, it's great. The final level has over 1700 enemies alone, and you can defeat them easily.
44. Battle Chess Previous Rank: 16 (Available on: Steam, GOG) The best way to play computer chess, in my opinion. Animated piece taking, well thought-out AI, it's just a great version of chess that stands the test of time. The “Enhanced” DOS version looks amazing as well.

43. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) Previous Rank: 33 (Available on: Steam, EA) Criterion made a name for themselves with the Burnout series, and when EA brought them to the Need For Speed series, it was just money. It's not as open world as say Burnout Paradise, but it's still a fun time.
42. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Previous Rank: 41 (Available on: Steam, GOG, EA) I do love me some Alpha Centauri, one of the greatest 4X games ever made. I love the setting, I love the characters, I love the Secret Project videos, it's just a great game that's more than just “Civilization II in space.”

41. Team Fortress 2 Previous Rank: 48 (Available on: Steam) A little higher than last time, but TF2 is still a fun time if you play it just right with the right people. The fact they made the SDK available to everyone is awesome.
Next part tomorrow!
Link to part 1. Link to part 2. Link to part 3. Link to part 4. Link to part 5. Link to part 7. Link to part 8. Link to part 9. Link to part 10.

Im almost done with the system shock remake and something that I really love is how you, at a moment or two, can ALMOST feel bad for SHODAN, like there’s a brief moment in an audio log in level 8, security, where SHODAN is pondering what she is from definitions made by humans, and knows she doesn’t fit in, and starts looking at human religions for a definition. And that’s something where you for a nanosecond go, “oh yeah, that really sucks I know what she’s feeling” and then she immediately ruins any kind of sympathy by going “hm yes, I am a god actually”. ITS GREAT, she can’t be redeemed in anyway and wholeheartedly believes in what she’s doing.

System Shock remake for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, and Xbox One launches May 21
From Gematsu
The System Shock remake will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 21, publisher Prime Matter and developerNightdive Studios announced.
The remake first launched for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG on May 30, 2023.
Here is an overview of the game, via Prime Matter:
About
“Look at you, Hacker. A pth-pth… pathetic creature of meat and bone.” You awaken from a six month healing coma aboard Citadel Station, TriOptimum’s premier research facility. Mutants feast on their former crew mates, nightmares of flesh bound to metal roam the dark hallways, and the station’s A.I., SHODAN, is aiming Citadel’s mining laser… at Earth! Your military grade neural interface is all that stands between humanity and the silicon god coming to remake Earth in their vision. System Shock is a remake of the beloved PC classic. Updating mechanics, graphics, and enemy A.I.—System Shock is here to offer a new generation of players a chance to go toe-to-toe with one of gaming’s iconic enemies: SHODAN. Fight, hack, and save humanity from a fate worse than death itself.
Weapons and Tools at Your Disposal
“How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?” Weapons have been completely overhauled to form a new deadly arsenal featuring the MK 2100 Magnum, SK-27 Shotgun, LG-XX Plasma Rifle, ND-12 Rail Gun, the Laser Rapier, and many more. Plug-in the Mapping Unit implant to chart your way through all nine levels of Citadel Station, hook-up the Biological Systems Monitor to monitor your health and energy consumption, and install the Multimedia Data Reader to experience the last horrifying moments of Citadel’s crew.
New Threats and Horrors
“My children, a human infection continues to thrive inside of me…” SHODAN’s twisted mind has remade the crew into her image of perfection. Poisoning their DNA, she mutated their flesh. Clouding their minds, she grafted together steel and bone to make them cyborgs. Around every corner lurks a new and horrible way to die.
Explore Citadel Station for the First Time
“You are an interloper, a blight on my domain.” Citadel Station has been renovated to include new areas to explore, traps to evade, puzzles to solve and secrets to discover. Hack your way through Cyberspace, a 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) hacking simulator rebuilt to be more dangerous with new enemies and challenges.
