I read 156 books and graphic novels in 2023. 119 graphic novels, 37 books. 25 non-fiction, 131 fiction. 69 graphic novels, 50 graphic mangas. 15 re-reads.
Starting in March with Unbroken, I started reading a number of books about World War II. I think I had, as ever a goal to read more non-fiction and since there are so many books on the 2 World Wars, they are often the ones that I’m able to check out from the library without a super long wait list. Then Oppenheimer came out this summer so I was more intrigued and decided to read the basis for the film (which is atypical for me outside of comics). Following Unbroken I read a few spy books, Operation Mincemeat and Double Cross in May by Ben McIntyre that were super interesting.
I had previously read The Confidence Men about 2 British POWs from WWI who escaped a Turkish POW camp by (among other things) a Ouija board. I had started reading The Diary of Anne Frank/Diary of a Young Girl sometime this past year I think and finally finished it near the end of the year and Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning in October. I started listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in November or December and read for my family’s book club The Woman Who Smashed Codes about Elizabeth Friedman and her husband who developed cryptology in the US between World War I and II and was treated pretty wretchedly by the US government for her efforts. This was in no small part due to J. Edgar Hoover, who seems to be more and more a villain every time I have the misfortune of encountering him in books and other media.
A manga series I had started last year, The Promised Neverland, I’m close to finishing (I believe there are 20 volumes, which isn’t super long for a manga series. Full Metal Alchemist is 20-something volumes if I remember correctly) and I finally finished Hikaru no Go about a teenager who accidentally finds himself competing in the Japanese game Go due to a haunted Go board in his grandfather’s attic. A web comic that my wife got me interested in, Lore Olympus, retells the story of Persephone and Hades with a combination of contemporary and antiquity culture. The comic is broken up into “seasons” and the second season was recently finished so I wanted to read up to that point while waiting for the end of the third season. Unfortunately, it was long enough ago that I had read up to the end of the first season I ended up having to start over. But this was good as there were a number of things I caught the second time through and appreciated more on a re-read.
I also read the 4th and 5th Wheel of Time books for the second time this past year, which was an interesting experience. There were a lot of things I remembered incorrectly because of the 25ish years since I read them initially. I don’t think I’m going to read the entire series all the way through again, but I might read book 6. I finished re-reading The Sandman (partly due to the release of the Netflix series) and went on a kick of other Vertigo (an imprint of DC Comics that focused on non-superhero books, more adult and more creator-controlled that is now largely if not entirely defunct) titles (the Dead Boy Detectives, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing). Don’t know where I’ll go with that. Also read a decent amount of Spider-Verse comics (mostly Spider-Gwen but one big crossover book that was sort of the culmination of the Spider-Verse storylines (I think?)) that was interesting. Spider-Gwen is a great comic that has yet to lead to the frustration I felt with the later Miles Morales books.
Nagata Kabi’s memoirs about self-esteem, her fraught relationship with her parents, alcoholism and eating problems is both interesting and very frustrating. I am very lucky to not have hardly any of her emotional, mental and health issues that are wound up together but reading her mangas it is hard not to want to shake her when she seems to recover from one life-threatening catastrophe only to work herself into another. I’m morbidly curious about her later volumes about pancreatitis.
Lastly, there were some books on Arthur and some non-fiction or books by African-American authors that I had intended to start or finish that I’m dragging my heels on. We’ll see what happens in the next year with that.

Kaius’ description on that ‘poorly describe your OCs’ post is actually amazing lol
I’d love to hear a little more about them if you feel up to talking about them!
Haha absolutely.
So Kaius is a tiefling gunslinger who worked as a hired gun/hit man/bounty hunter/what-have-you, pretty much did anything if it paid, up until he met his future wife, a samsaran named Esmalda. She worked as an entertainer playing piano at a club in a city called Goldengate. Kaius took up a job as a bouncer for the club and got close to her. They hit it off, and after dating for some time they got married, and later had a daughter—Kee. These were the some of the happiest times in Kaius’ life.
Then as Kee got older, she began to grow ill. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her, and her condition was getting worse—slowly, but steadily. Kaius and Esmalda disagreed on how to get together the money to pay for her medical bills. Kaius wanted to go back into his old business, but Esmalda was afraid that was too dangerous and would bring his enemies to their doorstep. Esmalda wanted to do some…“private entertainment” as a side gig…but Kaius wasn’t comfortable with that idea. Their relationship became rocky and eventually they split up. Kaius went back to his old gig as a hired gun, going by the name “Hawke” (short for Hawkeye) to try to keep his life with Esmalda and Kee separate from his work life. He became a habitual liar, not trusting anyone with any piece of honest truth about his life incase it might lead back to his family.
This led into our actual game, in which Kaius met a rag-tag group of weirdos—a fire genie sorcerer, an aasimar cleric, a rakshasa worshipping tiger beastkin antipaladin, and an orc wizard. He followed his modus operandi and lied constantly about everything involving himself. Which was hilarious when he played two truths and a lie with them and he rolled a nat 1 to deceive them in believing his 3 lies.
Anyways his deception didn’t last long because their first stop on their journey ended up being—where else—Goldengate. They ended up needing to pull off a heist of an artifact in a museum belonging to a man who it turned out Esmalda was currently dating for money. Kaius managed to talk his ex into looking the other way at their antics, used a clever mix of magic and items to become invisible and silence his gun to slip inside and steal the artifact while the party was fighting the security system, and got it out to their getaway vehicle.
As they were escaping their cleric, Gabrielle, explained that the artifact, a golden bowl, had the power to turn water stored in it into a medicine that could cure any disease after an hour. Kaius told them he needed that bowl, he needed to take it to the hospital, *now*. Without asking for an explanation, Gabby let Kaius take the bowl, despite it being a sacred artifact of her religion. Kaius jumped off a *moving bus* with a bowl *full of magic water* to get it to his sick daughter at the hospital. And he succeeded, he got the medicine to her, and it worked.
He returned the bowl to Gabby later, and thanked her for trusting him. In return for her trust, he told her the full truth about everything, about who he was and why he was there and what the medicine had been for and who Esmalda was to him. He asked her not to share it with the others. He still didn’t want more people to know than necessary, to keep his family safe. Gabby understood, and agreed.
After that Kaius continued traveling with the party because he felt like he owed them, and he helped them to gather the rest of Gabby’s artifacts. Without a desperate need for money driving him anymore, he could relax, and he ended up actually being a bit of a playful prankster when he could get away with it.
Later, it turned out Kaius made a big mistake trusting Gabby, when she turned out to be the leader and messiah figure of a cult that wanted to usurp the pantheon and replace them with their god Menia. When Gabby turned on the party she tried to have Kaius turn with her, believing he would take her side given that he viewed her in a sort of fatherly way. He really did hesitate, especially because she was the reason he’d managed to save his daughter. The only reason he didn’t end up turning traitor with her is because she ended up making a thoughtless comment about what Menia would do to those with ‘impure’ blood like Kee, who was half tiefling and half samsaran. Knowing his child wouldn’t be safe in Gabrielle’s world, he turned his gun on her instead.
From then on, Kaius has had a policy not to trust anyone who isn’t family. The closest person to him outside of Esmalda and Kee is the orc wizard, Eleanor, and that’s more a case of respect for her than trust. Volstat the beastkin and Hiyi the genie turned on him and Eleanor after the final battle because both Eleanor and Kaius believed Gabby had the potential to be redeemed after learning how she’d been manipulated by the cult and Menia, while Volstat and Hiyi just wanted revenge. Kaius and Eleanor have taken up a sort of foster parent role with Gabby, working on helping her to unlearn the things the cult taught her.
Once Kaius retired again and the fighting cults and gods and all that BS was over, he and Esmalda got remarried, and without the stress of dealing with medical bills or fear for their daughter’s life, things have gone well. Kaius runs a bar where Esmalda plays piano, and his guns are hung up where he doesn’t need them…so long as no customers get too rowdy.

Oooohhhh that little- then she tells him they can all live together and sums up all the crap we are going through right now *cough cough* coronavirus, and then he does a freakin 180 and is like, “I don’t deserve this. Then once they all go back to the human world, guess what, EMMA FREAK FRACKIN IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD AND HAS NO MORE MEMORIES???!!!!! Now I think I’m really gonna die of agony ಠ_ಠ. Then after all the kids look over entire freakin universe, some weird magic crap happens (thank you Conny) Ray finds her and she’s like, “who are you?”.........poor Ray and Norman, the pain they must’ve felt at that moment. woohoho that would be one crazy emotional rollercoaster urgh. And eventually she’s like, “I’ve feel like I’ve been looking for you all this time and they live happily ever after. Waaaahahaha I’m gonna start crying agaaaiiiinnnnnn 😭😭. Man, the promised neverland is a master piece. Thank you Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu, you’re story has impacted me in many ways and reminded me what a wonderful life we have (not a life where we are food for demons living on farms and are destined to die 🙃) and are able to choose a future for ourselves and make a difference in this world!ヾ(^◡^)ノ". I am procrastinating so here is a list of books I hope to read this year but this is more than I can manage and I am also a mood reader. I will try. Please let me know if you've read any of these and if you like them or not :)
(Maybe I will cross them out as I go that would be fun... and add more books that I for sure am going to read instead of sticking to the list)
Abercrombie, Joe - Red Country (yeah, it's still the only one in the series I haven't read. I am embarassed too. The book is cursed. I also plan to read the newest one after it's released)
Abercrombie, Joe - Half a War (need to finish the trilogy even though it's just good. Fine.)

17 questions to answer, 17 people to tag!! Let the games begin!! (cough* that was weird *cough😂😂)
Thanks to @bluelric for the tag!!
Nicknames: Well🤔🤔 I go by Astrid on social media (cause is a really cute name at least for me😂😂) but my little cousins call me "Mimi" and in every game I play I say my name is Deborah... So yup😂😂 (some personal information got leaked... Frick!! 😂)
Zodiac: I'm a Libra!! 😂😂 (don't believe on zodiac signs but it's pretty funny to read incorrect quotes about them😂😂)
Height: 1'63cm... Almost 1'64 :')
Last thing I googled: funny thing: I actually didn't remind what I last googled so I searched in my search history and...

Yup
Song stuck in my head: Two actually: Ophelia by The Lumineers and Little Talks by Of monsters and men... Last one since I saw @officersnickers quote I haven't been able to put it off of my head 😂😂 and Ophelia cause I've just discovered it and I love the song😍😍
Number of followers: 38 amazing people that I seriously don't know why they follow me😂💖💖
Amount of Sleep: Not sure exactly how much but I can say this... Not enough... (but I usually sleep around 6 hours so🤔🤔)
Lucky number: Don't have one but my favorite number is both 3 and 632281 (3 thanks to pjo and 632281 thanks to my adopted children 😂😂) Ohh 6 also works🤔😂
Dream Job: I'm not sure but I want a job where I can see people smile thanks to something I have done or help to do... At some point of this year (and also at some point of last year😂) I wanted to be the care taker of an orphanage but one of my cousins said to me that I would suffer once I'll had to part ways with the kids I'd raise and that he didn't want to see me heartbroken so... Yup I just want to make people happy but I don't know how😂😂
Wearing: A grey t-shirt that says "Guapa 24/7" and a pink pastel pijama short (Guapa 24/7 means "Beautiful 24/7" in spanish 😂😂)
Favorite song: Don't have one 😔 But I've been wanting to listen songs with the same style as "Ophelia" or "Riptide" from Vance Joy cause they remind me of summer🤔😂 if you have any recommendations pls share them💖💖😔
Fav instrument: Ukelele (which thanks to my cousin I know how to play!!! 😂😂), Violin (the only instrument that makes me enjoy classical music) and Kalimba
Aesthetic: I like pastel stuff but also grunge with glitch... Depending on my mood cause at times I like to have a dark aesthetic 😂😂
Favorite Author: From a series of books?? Rick Riordan or James Dashner (Pjo and The Maze Runner authors) From Manga?? Kaiu Shirai And Posuka Demizu. From drawings?? Viria with digital and Tamaytka with traditional and watercolors 🤗✨😂
Favorite animal noises: OWLS. I LOVE WHEN OWLS HOOT is just :')
youtube
(This owl brings me joy)
Random: I like to make stories in my head right before sleep and once I decided to do it with some The Promised Neverland characters... I ended up dreaming about Norman being really serious with his role of "second big brother in Grace Field House" and being really sweet with Gilda and now I'm not sure what to do?? 😂😂😂 Also I found hilarious that in Ray's description in the Manga (at least in spanish) they say he's wise when he tried to burn himself... It's not "wise" exactly "Norma editorial"... it's called trauma...
Tagging Time!!
(not sure I'll get to 17 people though😂😂)
@anabethtessahermione @brokenpisces15 @i-need-a-permanent-vacation @just-in-e @spaceoceania @venus--syndrome @pernico-under-the-dead-sea @officersnickers

The Spark (CountryMusicStar!Bucky x OFC)
Pairing: Country Star!Bucky x Country Star!OFC
Rating: PG
Warning(s): Angst & Fluff
Word Count: 2,954
Info: This series has been running around my brain for forever, like over a year, so here it is. This is for @the-omni-princess 1k Writing Challenge, I grabbed Celebrity AU. Please forgive me for having it be 2 days late, being sick and just having a laptop that doesn’t quite like me hasn’t helped me get this done on time. I do not know lawyer-speak or contract speak for that matter, so please do not come after me or my friend @stormygedd0nthespaz who helped me with this. Thank you!
Synopsis: What do you do when the man who holds your career comes to you with an ultimatum, that not only affects you but the lives around you? That is what is happening for Sparrow Lake, she thought she would start 2020 with just her close friends and family, but when Tony Stark shows up at her family's Smokey Mountain home, with fellow country star Bucky Barnes and their manager, that was not going to happen.
Thursday, January 9th E!News Online
Stark Record’s owner Tony Stark held a press conference Thursday morning in Nashville, to announce the engagement of two of his top-selling artist Bucky Barnes and Sparrow Lake. The couple first sparked rumors when they performed their new singles Center Point Road and I Will Fall, which both happen to be duets with each other, at Stark Records Take Over Grand Ole Opery. Fans of both Bucky and Sparrow took to Twitter with their speculations but were shot down by Sparrow Lake’s guitarist, Clint Barton, who tweeted; “What happened to the days when artists could collaborate and it didn’t mean they were in relationship?” It was quickly retweeted by Sparrow’s siblings Bey Lake and Peter Parker, as well as Bucky Barnes best friend Steve Rogers.
Tony broke the news saying, “It is my pleasure to announce the engagement of two of my record labels artist Bucky Barnes and Sparrow Lake. The couple have worked hard to keep the relationship as private as possible for the past thirteen months, but know they are ready to share it with you all. As the fans have been speculating for a while they were together, both Sparrow and Barnes are open with fans, they felt it was the right thing to do. They are working on setting a date for their wedding and are happy to have their relationship out in the open. Stark Records, couldn't be more happy for Barnes and Sparrow, they make a great couple. I look forward to seeing what the future brings them. Thank you.”
In Tony Stark fashion he didn't stick around to take questions from the press, but just hours later Sparrow posted to her Instagram, where she showed off her ring with the caption, “My soul said yes.” Just minutes later, Bucky Barnes posted a photo of Sparrow Lake makeup-free, with the caption, “So glad you said yes, so we can take over the world together.” If that doesn't melt your heart, I don't know what will!
Wednesday, January 8th, 10 AM - Great Smoky Mountains, Eastern Tennessee
The house was alive giggles from Birdie as she ran after Jojo, who held her scrunchie in her jaw. Clint laughed at his daughter's antics reminding her to be careful between puffs of breaths. Bey sat on the couch, guitar in lap, phone beside them as they recorded a demo for a pop star. Sparrow sat with her mother, Maggie, sipping on a new tea she had gotten while in Canada with her father Bruce. This was how Sparrow imagined her break, before she hit the studio, with her family, her friends just relaxing.
“Mr. Lake, Hayes is reporting that Mr. Stark is coming up the driveway, I wasn't aware we were expecting him today.” Kaius, frowned as he walked in listening to his Bluetooth earplugs. The security guard was known for not liking Tony Stark’s chaotic fits, as he liked to call them. Bruce looked up from his book, pulling his glasses off confused before shaking his head.
“We weren't aware he was coming to visit.” pulling himself up from the chair, Bey followed suit laying their guitar on the couch. “Why don't you go ask Mags to put the coffee on and I’ll go see what Mr. Stark is here for.” patting Kaius on the shoulder, he made his way out the front door pulling his bomber jacket closer to his body as she black SUV came to a stop.
Bruce watched on as Happy Hogan opened the door for Tony Stark, followed by Sam Wilson, his daughter's manager, last but not least Bucky Barnes got out. Bucky looked annoyed as Sam spoke to him, but shook his head before he smiled when he saw that Bruce was watching them. Sam waved to Bruce as he took a bundle of bouquets from Happy, Bruce provided a head-nod of acknowledgment.
“Good morning Bruce, would it hurt to get cellphone reception up here?” Tony climbed up the steps while gazing up at the maestro of recording music. “Also I hear a congratulation is in order, 4 grammy nominations, that makes what 60 in total your career so far?” Bruce shook Tony’s hand when they met at the top of the stairs.
“Don’t go congratulating me just yet Mr. Stark, I haven't won yet. As for cellphone reception, my Verizon network works just fine, I was able to call my sister and heard her crystal clear.” Bruce peered down the shorter man, as they waited for the other two gentlemen to reach the porch. Tony scoffed as he pulled his cellphone out to see his name network only had two bars.
“Is there a chance that Miss. Sparrow has risen yet from slumber?” stuffing his cell back in the pocket of his jeans, as both Bucky and Sam came up behind him.
“She rose with the sun today. Mr. Stark, we weren't expecting you today, any of you. Not that I'm not happy to see you Sam or Bucky, but this Sparrow’s vacation as well as mine, so if you don't mind me asking, what is it your here for?” Bruce leaned against the banister his arms crossed over his chest, keeping the heat in. Before any of the visitors could speak, Sparrow had opened the front door, her mother's Mexican serape around her shoulders.
“Sam, Mr. Stark, what a surprise, I just checked with Sarah, she said you didn’t call or e-mail to say you were coming by. Bucky it’s so good to see you.” stepping out onto the porch, Sparrow laid a kiss to Bucky’s cheek, before doing the same to Sam, her eyes staying on Tony the whole time. Clint and Kaius stood vigilant in the doorway.
“I thought you’d give your team a break, we also needed to talk in person, at best interest.” Tony kissed Sparrow on the cheek as he took his sunglasses off and looked at her with a fond smile. Sparrow pulled away, taking one of the bouquets off Sam’s hands. The anemone’s stood out against berries, lilies, cotton, and roses.
“Let's go inside then, it's warm and my mother put a fresh pot of coffee on and she’s about to take a tray of snickerdoodles out of the oven.” Kaius and Clint broke away from the doorway allowing the group to pass by, Bey was holding Birdie upside down by her legs, making the little girl giggle. Maggie stood in the entrance of the living room hands on her hip, an apron around her waist looking at the men.
“You best remove your shoes before you mess up my house, I had these floors cleaned before Christmas so my angels could eat off them,” Maggie ordered the group, referring to Birdie, Clint’s daughter, and Jojo the family's dog, when she meant angels. Bucky made no protest and was quick to take off his worn cowboy boots, while Sam handed over the matching bouquet to her before he slipping his Timberlands off. Tony sighed before he took a seat at the bench in the entrance, pulling off his Adidas. Maggie kissed Sam’s cheek before she took both hers and Sparrow’s bouquets into the kitchen to put them in water.
Bruce leads the group into the dining room, sitting at his usual head of the table. Sparrow sat beside her father to the left, the windows casting a rainbow effect to her. Tony sat down with Bucky between him and Sam, facing Sparrow as Clint came in and sat down beside her. Sam opened his jacket to pull out a file and setting it on the table, immediately Sparrow's stomach dropped.
“Sparrow, I assume you've seen the charts since you and Barnes put your singles out at the end of November. Well fans have been speculating that you two are together for awhile since photographers caught you both leaving the studio in New York.” Sparrow looked at Bucky who was staring at her, he winked but it did nothing to ease the monster sitting in the pit of her stomach, that felt like it was trying to claw its way out currently.
“So I got to thinking you know what would be great, if we could form the next Faith Hill and Tim McGraw!” Was she going to faint, was the room suddenly too hot? Sparrow threw the serape from her shoulders and covered her face with her hands.
“Stark, you do realize they are always fighting? Just last year when I was backstage at their tour, Faith was kicking him out of their dressing room and they were spending the rest of tour in different busses. That marriage is in shambles.” Sam didn't think the Tim and Faith were a good reference at all, as he put his two sense in. There was no doubt the two loved each other but no one would want to put themselves willingly in their shoes.
“Okay, so terrible reference, Sparrow Lake and Bucky Barnes could be the next Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. I bet they could even be the next Johnny and June Cash, I want to make it happen.” banging his hand on the table, Sparrow flinched back while Bruce glared at Tony. Tony was out of his mind if he thought he had the next big it couple, you had to have a couple for it to be a couple.
“Just one problem Stark, last I checked Bucky isn't dating my daughter.” Bruce stood up from his chair, placing his hands on the table, making his annoyance ever the more known at the label owner and multimillionaire.
Clint reached under the table grabbing Sparrow’s hand as her leg started to bounce up and down. Anxiety was heavy on her mind, Tony Stark had something up his sleeve she just knew it. Bruce sat back down just as Maggie came in with a platter of cookies along with mugs and coffee.
“Mom, can you take Dad and Jojo out for a walk, he needs some air.” meeting her father's gaze as her mother placed a kiss atop her head. Bruce was up from his seat no argument as Maggie looked at him from above their daughters head. Placing a kiss on the crown of Sparrow's head, he sighed then proceed to follow his wife out of the room.
Sparrow poured cups of coffee for everyone, buying time to be sure her parents had left the cabin. Bucky watched her closely, he could see the slight shake in her as she passed each cup out, how her left pointer finger plucked at the skin on the nail bed of her thumb. The door closing pulled everyone from their thoughts as Sam took a cookie from platter stuffing it in his mouth in one go.
“Tony, as my dad said before, me and Bucky aren’t dating, I‘ve made no inclination that I was dating anyone since I broke up with my ex, so I’m just not sure what you are insinuating.” Clint and Sam’s eyes met while Bucky scratched at the stubble that had grown on his face over the past few days.
“Well it’s simple really, Bucky and you have been dating in secret for the past 13 months, that give you what six months to get over what’s his face. Bucky over Christmas break proposed to you and well, you both just love your fans so much it’s now time for the two of you confirm that you have been in a relationship and you want to share this wonderful news with them.” Tony smiled at her while Sparrow’s jaw dropped, the monster was now raging and it was going to try and claw its way out of her. Clint well he was laughing, the man couldn’t be seriously insinuating a fake marriage was an amazing idea.
“Stark you can’t seriously be thinking that a fake marriage is going to sell more tickets and records are you? It may work for a little bit but when TMZ finds out it’s fake because you can’t fake records like that, well it’s over their fans will hate them.” Clint got up from the table and started to pace the dining room, running his fingers through his hair.
“No it will be real, they will be married till one of them doesn’t want to make music anymore. I’ve thought this out for weeks, they can tour together and support each other. They will be the next big thing. Sparrow if you don’t go through with this, I will terminate your contract with Stark Records.” It was getting harder to breathe, the air felt stifling, she could hear Clint calling Tony something before he stormed out of the room. Suddenly someone was beside her holding her hand, and she knew it was Bucky.
“But what about my contract surely you can’t just take it away from me because I refuse to get married.” Sparrows’ voice cracked as she looked to Sam than Tony, as her pointer finger tried to make contact with her thumb, but Bucky held her hand tighter.
“I looked Sparrow and in your contract under clause 12 article 1, it says at any point in which you don't fulfill any request or obligation given to you by Tony Stark or Pepper Potts, they have the right to terminate your contract.” Sam handed over the very contract Sparrow had signed at 21, without her parents beside her or a lawyer, for that matter. He had the part he was talking about highlighted in lime green. This was real, she could very well have her record contract taken from her.
“Sam, Tony can you give me and Sparrow a few minutes alone.” Bucky continued to hold Sparrow’s hand as she stared at the contract. His heart went out to her it truly did, he remembered what it felt to feel as if the world was out to get him when he was barely acknowledged by fellow country artist, producers wanted to control his sound. He found his backbone, kept his true friends closer and stood up for what he believed in, his family.
When they were alone Bucky got up from the table and pulled Sparrow along with him, remembering the door Maggie Lake had come through, as the kitchen, he leads them through there. At the breakfast nook was leftover ice water from breakfast, he quickly pulled a chair out for Sparrow to sit, before pouring the water. Once he was sure they were alone and some of the color had returned Sparrow’s face he took her hand again.
“Sparrow I need you to listen to me and I need you to listen to me well. I’m on your side and I know in the end we’ll make a great team but you just have to hear me out.” setting her glass down she turned her body so it was facing him and he had her full attention. “As much as the media likes to think I’m with every girl I’m seen with I’m not. I haven't been with anyone since Delores Smith, and she, she broke my heart, Sparrow. I haven't had time for anyone, I’m always on tour, in the studio recording or I’m promoting a single. I need someone who understands me and I think that if you give us a shot, a real shot to fall in love like I’m willing to try, I think we could have something.” pulling her hand from Bucky’s she started to pull her hair up but he got up and moved up behind her. Suddenly he was putting her hair in a French braid.
Sparrow felt like she owed this to everyone in her life to do this. She owed this to her parents who worked so hard year after year, album after album of her own dads to this. She owed this to her siblings who cheered her on, but especially Bey and Peter who had known what it felt like to feel so lost. Scott, she for sure owed him, he had taken her song and put it on the airways of his music show, got her played all across North America, taking her directly himself to Tony Stark. Scott had helped her get signed. She really owed it to Clint, who took his only child on the road with them, looked out for her like a big brother did. He had given up so much to be her guitarist and he showed no signs of stopping. How could he let not only them down, the fans but herself?
“I promise you Sparrow Lake we are in this as a team.” Bucky gave her his signature half-smile as held out his left pinky to her, biting her lip she hooked her right one with his.
“Don’t make me regret this Barnes, and I hope you are prepared for this family because you have no idea what you have gotten yourself into.” talking as she watched Bucky get down on one knee, she laughed when he reached into his skin-tight jeans to pull out a purple velvet box.
“Sparrow India Lake, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife and my best friend, that drives Sam crazy with me?” opening the velvet box sat a beautiful ring that Sparrow recognized right away as a ring she pointed out to her sister-in-law when they were out shopping.
“Yes, yes James Buchanan Barnes, I would love to drive Sam crazy with you as well as become your best friend and wife.” Bucky took the elegant celestial ring from its holder and placed it on her left ring finger, making it very official. Sparrow Lake was on her way to becoming Sparrow Lake-Barnes.

Consequences of Karrnath Session 23
A Sword in Shadow Cast
Our Players this week:
Dagne, Vengeance Paladin, an undead soldier created by the Odakyr Rites, but is now something else entirely. They are a Seeker sworn to protect the living. Has a skeleton horse mount from Find Steed named Coffin. They are the party leader and reluctantly serve under King Kaius III. Can be abrasive and dishonest, but they are ultimately kind.
Vaeren, Swarmkeeper Ranger, a blind Deathguard sent to investigate Dagne’s nature. They keep a spirit idol with five spirits of dead Deathguard: Galan, Kerxna, Paeral, Aelrie, and Nym, who can allow them to see, but from a third person point of view. They’re contemplative and disciplined, helping Dagne keep the party in line.
Syv, Glamour Bard, a traveling performer turned traveling adventurer. Her personas are Eshi, a sea elf, and Star, a shifter. They’re generally positive with a bit of a mischievous streak and hold a strong sense of justice, especially where they see discrimination against changelings. She is generally supportive of the whole group, emotionally and in combat.
With the small cloaked figures nowhere in sight after the fight, Vaeren rushes through the whole complex to find them. Eventually, they spot one, hiding up in the rafters of a hall. Knowing they’re caught but surprised to be spotted, the figure drops down. They’re carrying a bow, shortsword, and a staff with carved designs and rainbow feathers. Their face is obscured by a full mask. “Did not plan to contact you yet, but seeing that you found me that is what we must do then,” the figure speaks with a Talentan accent, “do you have anything to ask of us?” “I want to thank you for your help back there,” Vaeren replies. “You are welcome for the assistance. We intervened because you are enemies of our enemies, and it is better for you to be alive that dead.”
“You say that we are enemies of your enemies,” Vaeren asks, “but who are your enemies?” “Our enemies are the enemies of life and the world, and those who traffic with them.” It takes Vaeren a moment to tease out that riddle, but they get it by remembering Etena’s words, “what connection is there between the Red Watchers and Khyber, if you know of one?” “The Holy Ones made us aware that the Shadow Sword has his claws in them,” the halfling responds, and Vaeren is at a loss, not recognizing either epithet, they continue, “am I correct in surmising that you are after Inesa Yanova?” “Yes, we are,” Vaeren confirms. “Good, we can aid you in this task, but given a bit of time to find what location she has taken. If you meet me in two days’ time outside of Korth on the edge of the Night Wood, I can likely give you a good direction to go in to find the location of your quarry.” “Your help would be very much appreciated.” “I shall see you then,” the halfling turns and walks away, leaving the compound.
Vaeren returns to the rest of the party in the courtyard. As they arrive, everyone sees a large, birdlike form take off from nearby and fly away. Dagne approaches them, “did you find anything?” Vaeren nods, “in two days at the southern edge of Korth by the Night Wood, we’re meeting a rainbow feathered halfling. They should tell us where Inesa is.” “Did they tell you anything else?” “They mentioned Khyber being connected to the Red Watchers and the Shadow Sword, whatever that is, being connected too.” Dagne recalls that, in myth, Mordakhesh The Shadow Sword was the a lieutenant, warlord and legendary commander in the First War, serving Rak Tulkesh, the Rage of War. “That is very bad, the Shadow Sword serves directly under an Overlord, the Rage of War,” superstitiously, Dagne does not say their names out loud.
“We’re fucked,” Syv says. The Red Watcher prisoners appear visibly shocked by the revelation, clearly unaware that their organization had such ties. “I think that would be a serious problem,” Seven muses, “one thing I do know about demons is that if you kill them, they go back to Khyber. Isn’t that how that works? Not sure we could take that guy though. Well… so I think we should head back to Korth so you can give your report, I can meet with my friends, and then we can all set out after Inesa. Because I am going to kill her, that’s still the plan.” “You’re unconcerned that Inesa serves the Shadow Sword?” Dagne asks. “Well, we can’t do something about the Shadow Sword, we’re not Tira Miron, but we can do something about Inesa.” Some humor enters Dagne’s bleak tone, “I think I’ll take you up on your offer to meet The Wall then.”
Upon returning to Korth, the party is stopped at the gate by a warforged guard, unusual on two counts. “All of you, name and identification” the warforged commands. “Is there a problem?” Dagne asks as the party produces their paperwork. Looking it over, he responds, “doesn’t seem to be. You may enter the city. There has been a curfew imposed for tenth bell.” “Understood. We’ll be on our way.”
As the party walks through the city, most citizens seem on edge. Many White Lions and warforged bearing the iron wolf crest of the Iron Legion are patrolling the streets. Seven splits off from the party in the Low District, taking the warforged prisoner with him. To pass between the wards, the party has to go through additional identification checks. When they arrive at the wall of High Court Ward, the check is much stricter, and only Iura Josan is let inside. When Dagne informs the warforged guard of the prisoners, he sends a couple iron wolves to drag them off. After a while, another warforged comes to tell the guard to allow Vaeren to enter as well. Syv asks why she can’t be let in, and the warforged replies that unless they have business in the ward, they cannot be allowed in. Iura Josan and Vaeren were allowed in due to direct orders, and no such orders were given for Syv. She sighs and walks away.
Dagne follows a warforged escort to Crown Home, which is swarmed with the royal guard. They’re led inside and have to wait for a time, but then they’re led to meet with the king. He’s wearing his armor. “What happened in this city?” Dagne asks him. King Kaius sighs, “we have had a wave of Red Watchers make themselves known after a writing of Inesa’s was distributed, detailing the actions of the Ministry. This led to unrest with the Watchers tried to exploit, so I’m having my people deal with that. Have you found anything?” “Two things. One, you were correct that the pale men were created by the Ministry of Dead. They are acting in treason. Two, the Red Watchers are being manipulated by the Shadow Sword.”
“The Shadow Sword? I might find that hard to believe, but the Daughters of Sora Kell took control of a region in the last few years. It seems the world has gone mad. We already have enough on our plate without having to battle monsters of myth,” his voice sounds surprisingly unconcerned in the face of this revelation, and he quickly pivots to the other subject, “the reveal of the treasonous actions of the Ministry to the public does give us a chance to stop them in the open, which is fortunate despite the unrest. We play into the anger, dissolve the Ministry, destroy their new creations and determine how to reorganize their assets.” “Can I read this pamphlet?” Dagne asks, finding his words curious. The king gives them a copy. They read it to find that it contains the information they’d given Vakaris, the information they had remembered. Dagne has no choice but to confront this now, “did you know about the Odakyr Rites?” “Not until the war ended,” Kaius replies. “Regent Moranna kept this from you?” “This is so,” he says simply.
Dagne searches the king’s face for any hint of a lie, but there is nothing, “alright. My party is going to receive a lead on Inesa Yanova in two days’ time. Shall we pursue her?” “Yes. You should capture her so we can hold her until things cool down. She is too popular at the moment.” “And what of the Shadow Sword?” “I’ll look into this threat. The best thing to do at the moment is continue to oppose the Red Watchers, especially now since they’re being influenced by a demonic force.” “Understood. We will bring Inesa Yanova back to you.”
Meanwhile, a warforged escorts Vaeren to Crown Home, informing them that the queen has scheduled a brief audience. Queen Entrigani seems to be in good spirits, grinning when Vaeren enters the room. Once the escort leaves, she says “hello guardian. I’ve been monitoring you and you’re doing well. You’ve become much more instrumental to our missions, joining the kind’s forces and helping us with one of our primary goals, dismantling the Ministry of Dead.” She picks up a bow, which had been leaning against the table, and places it on top, “In light of your accomplishments, I’d like to award you this. It’s a sunbow named Oathbreaker, called such because on of its previous wielders used it to kill three Oathbound in battle.” Vaeren bows to conceal the creeping discomfort they feel, “thank you ma’am. I’ll be sure to use this for good.”
“While you’re here,” Etrigani asks, “do you have anything to report on your long term mission or any of our other aims in Khorvaire?” “As for now, we are still unsure, but things are on track for us to figure out why soon,” Vaeren recipes. “That is good news.” Vaeren continues, not wanting to provide nothing, but also not wanting to share everything they know, “they seem to mean well, and their behavior is wildly inconsistent with the effects of Mabaran magic. They have refused to kill and ensure that all prisoners are kept alive. They are very in tune with the party’s well-being, acting as if they were still alive. In fact, they have been recovering memories from when they were.” The queen raises her eyebrows, “this is highly unusual. Continue your investigation.” “Yes ma’am.”
Vaeren is first to reunite with the party, followed by Dagne a while later. When they return, they comment, “where’d you get the new bow?” “It was given to me by my boss,” Vaeren replies. “And what did she tell you to do?” Dagne asks with suspicion. “She told me to continue on with the party.” “And if she’d told you to leave?” “That is not something I was told to do.” Syv cuts in, “but if you were told to leave, you would’ve?” Vaeren sighs, “no. I wouldn’t. I am not going to leave this party. We are sticking together.” Relieved, Syv begins to tear up, and Vaeren gives her a hug.
With that, the party heads back down to the Low District. Upon walking through the gates, the party sees a familiar cart, manned by a kobold and a warforged. Another warforged, the same model as Seven, is walking away, carrying Dagne’s old poleaxe. Syv runs up to Nik immediately. “Ah, hello friends!” Nik greets the party, “good to run into ou again. This city we entered before things got crazy and now we can’t enter any of the other wards. There are far too many lions and there are a few blast discs in this cart. You don’t want anyone finding those. It is excellent to see you all. We have lots of stuff in the cart, some you’ve seen before, some you have not, including many strange liquids,” he produces a vial of purple liquid, “like this, potion of maximum power. When you cast a spell under its influence, it will be powered maximally. I don’t know how it works, but I did the smell taste, the taste test. It’s legit.” Nik rambles on about his other wares, healing potions, venom, daggers, dust of disappearance, an everbright lantern, and a potion of advantage, refusing to give anyone else a word edgewise as he goes on. “Yeah, I’ll buy a couple healing potions,” Syv manages to say.
Ignoring her, Nik continues, pulling out a curious small vial of liquid on a chain, “so, uh, if someone has innate power, there’s a needle on the end of the stopper. They can prick themselves, add a drop of blood to the vial, and it’ll make them better at innate power. I also have ten pounds of salt.” Syv manages to get the topic back to healing potions. Nik has one C3, three C2s, and three C1s in stock, costing 350, 120, and fifty Galifars respectively. When Syv balks, Nik mentions that he’s actually more interested from purchasing treasure from the party anyway. Dagne produces bars of adamantine, byshek, and two of a strange purple alloy. Nik takes to them immediately, and the two haggle his initial offer of 300 Galifars all the way up to a 6500 check plus 500 store credit. “Syv,” Dagne asks, “does Nik have a valid bank account?” “I have more than one valid bank account!” Nik interjects, “I have my savings account, investment account, look, I have arcane marked check paper. If I lie about this I go to jail.” “To my knowledge, he’s never scammed anyone with checks,” Syv adds. Dagne takes the check.
Dagne wants to cash in the store credit immediately for the C3, one C2, and one C1, to which Nik points out that they’re short twenty Galifars. “And these potions are stolen, you can’t sell them at market value,” Dagne points out. “For the last time,” Nik says with some exasperation, “these are military surplus, and by ‘military surplus’ I mean someone grabbed them from the Mournland. It’s not stealing if there’s no one to enforce ownership. However, since we’re friends, toss me a platinum and I’ll call it even.” “Very well,” Dagne flicks the coin his way. Nik catches it and bites it, “yup, Soldarak real platinum.” Dagne then produces the books they’d taken from Tazaera Mol’s tomb, offering to trade them. Nik seems ecstatic to accept since the books are so well preserved. A lengthy barter ensues, in which Dagne trades books for the vial, blast discs, the potions of advantage and maximum power, which they take, dust of disappearance, the Talenta brushsnake venom, which they give to Vaeren, pipes of haunting, and a bag of ball bearings, they give to Syv. With twenty-two books still left over and Nik out of magical stock, he purchases the rest of the books in two checks from two of his valid bank accounts for 10,500 Galifars total.
After asking around the Low District, the party is directed to The Wall’s central headquarters. It’s a building that used to be a tavern, but has since stopped serving any alcohol since the warforged don’t need to drink. It’s a wooden building with a recent large addition, cannibalizing the building next to it to become twice the size. Loud talking emanates from the premises. Dagne opens the door and steps in. The patrons are mostly warforged of Seven’s model. There are a few fleshborn, including one man with a red hair and beard, wearing elvish half plate and carrying a bardish on his back. Despite his new face, Dagne is able to recognize Ivis in an instant by the armor. He’s engaged in arm-wrestling a warforged wearing a top hat and a suit, and Seven sits at the same table.
Dagne approaches the trio, “greetings, Sven. Who are your two friends?” “This is our commander, Questions, and this is Andrev the wolf. He came in pretty recently but seems like a cool guy.” At that moment, Questions wins the match. “Well met Questions, Andrev,” Dagne says, looking at each in turn. “Well met to you!” Ivis, Andrev, replies, and with a big grin on his face, remarks, “I think I’ve seen you before.” “Well met,” Questions agrees, “I’m the leader of this outfit. Seven told me about you. You’re Iura Josan, they’re Vaeren and Syv,” they gesture to each in turn. “That’s correct,” Dagne says, then turns back to Seven, “why as us to meet The Wall?” “Cause I think they’re good people to talk to,” Seven shrugs, “I like talking to them. Plus if you’re friends with The Wall, they can help you in the Low District.”
“What exactly are you doing in the Low District?” Dagne asks. Questions answers, “The Wall has guarded the Low District since shortly after the end of the war. We make sure that it’s a safe place to be.” “A noble cause,” Dagne says, noticing two iron wolves socializing with the rest of the forged in the establishment, “how’s your recruit?” “They’re adjusting,” Seven responds, “they had followed one of their friends from the war into the Red Watchers. Unfortunately that’s one of the people I killed during that fight, but I think they’ll readjust. They’ve taken the number Ninety-six.” That last detail strikes Dagne, “you all have numbers?” “Yep, we all have a number within our company as well as our name. My number is Seven and my name is Tracker cause I was good at tracking during the war, most of our names are like that.” “But that forged wasn’t part of your company.” “When you join you get a number,” Seven explains, “well he doesn’t technically have the number yet since we haven’t done the ritual, but we showed him which numbers we had and he picked that one. The ritual is later today.”
Once again, something is curious, Dagne asks, “what do you mean by numbers you had?” “During the war, the company had a system with designations for the warforged, including a number at the end. There were two-hundred original numbers, so everyone in the company had a number from one to two-hundred.” “So Ninety-six is dead then?” Dagne asks, just for clarity’s sake. “Yes, Ninety-six fell during the war. It was a great loss, as all who fell are.” “Indeed, death is the greatest tragedy of all,” Dagne states the familiar mantra, trails off, and then adds, “so, could I watch this number assignment ritual?” Seven nods, “if you want to. We’re holding the Enumeration at seventh bell.” Dagne notices then that every member of The Wall has an identification plate on the back of their hands. Questions’ number reads 26.
Suddenly, Questions looks at Syv, “what’s that magic around you?” “Oh, I’m a bard,” she says. “It seems to be minor glamour. Most bards don’t have that effect,” he muses aloud. Syv glances at Dagne and Vaeren, but neither bail her out, “I’m a special bard? I don’t know. I guess I just have that effect on people.” “If you don’t know, maybe you should look into the cause,” Questions suggests. Syv shrugs, “I never noticed anything.”
When the seventh bell sounds, the warforged all gather in another building and sit on the empty floor. The room is set up as a makeshift shrine to Dol Arrah and Dol Dorn, but the sovereigns are portrayed as red and silver warforged bearing spears and banners. A warforged, the same model as Seven once again, stands by the shrine, accompanying the soon-to-be Ninty-six. Dagne notices that he’s wearing a golden ring on one of his two fingers. Questions, Seven, and ten other warforged sit up front. Only one is of a different model, lithe with dark plating.
The warforged up front begins a eulogy for Ninty-six, named Unbroken’s life, listing accomplishments and their value to The Wall. They fell in a battle referred to as The Day of Brothers’ Blood, and even Dagne is at a loss trying to guess which battle that could be. Once the speech is finished, he asks the recruit if he’ll carry on Ninety-six’s legacy. He affirms. They place an identification plate bearing the number 96 on the back of his hand, which then fuses to the metal.
With that, the gathered warforged begin to chant, “Ninety-six!” Then, “The Wall still stands!” Dagne, curious about the warforged Sovereigns, the golden ring, and the whole Enumeration, whispers to Seven, “what’s your sect of the Host called?” “We follow the Legionaire’s Creed,” he responds, “that’s what Questions calls it. He wrote a whole book about it. I read it. It’s a pretty good book.” As it dawns on Dagne that the whole sect is brand new and specific to this group of warforged, the chanting continues, “Ninety-six! The Wall still stands! The Wall still stands!”

Highlights:
IVIS IS BACK! :D
Nik is apparently inspired by Hondo Ohnaka from The Clone Wars and yeah, that vibe is absolutely there. He has this way of ripping you off, admitting you’re too smart for that, and then still ripping you off anyway. Also the detail where he has multiple valid bank accounts is hilarious.
We finally got to see Queen Etrigani! And she was so unsettling! I don’t like the implication of her giving Vaeren a bow that kills Oathbound when they’re mission is related to Dagne.
Inesa published the Ministry of Dead’s sins but specifically left out that Dagne, the king’s agent, is undead. She had to have known, since Dagne told Vakaris both pieces of information. I’m worried by the omission.
Speaking of worrying things, I am apprehensive about Ninety-six. He’s a Red Watcher, and The Wall may have taken him in, but I doubt he’s trustworthy. At best, he’s unloyal, at worst, a spy.
Vaeren really got to shine this time! Their conversations with the halfling and Queen Etrigani were both so important and cool.
Syv’s moment where they pressed Vaeren about leaving the party was so sweet. She really wants to keep everyone together.
Dagne is so, so worried about the Shadow Sword. The fact that they wanted to call off hunting Inesa? Yeah. It’s serious.
