I’m answering the questions you asked, as you said you wanted me to. Those I tag will have to answer these questions as well.

Ten Questions

1. What sense, besides sight, do you most incorporate into your descriptions?

A: Hearing. I’m a great believer in strong sound design, especially when it comes to harsh or terrifying things. They need to sound awful too for them to have an impact. Though I would like to use touch more, as I think it’s probably the most grounding and ‘real’ sense.

2. Do you have a main source of inspiration for your WIP?

A: I always try to create stories that are as original as possible, so I draw from my collective experience of many many other works and not from one in particular. I find it helps to isolate the best qualities in other pieces and draw on those. That said, I was particularly taken recently by a fantastically gory and unsettling story I saw online called ‘Past the Spine’. So that’s probably the most recent major influence on my writing.

3. Which developmental rabbit hole do you fall down most often; character backgrounds or worldbuilding?

A: Character backgrounds, hands down. I’m very much a character writer. Though the worlds characters inhabit of course are likely to affect their personality, so the two are very closely interlinked.

4. What, if any, extra tidbits do you like to see from authors, ie. character profiles, maps + art, folklore, etc?

A: I love seeing short animations or films or trailers related to pieces of literature. Character drawings are always fascinating to me, and by extension these other visual adaptations, probably because if done well they bring the inspiration I’ve drawn from the page out into reality.

5. Is there any part of writing that you find more challenging than the rest?

A: Persistence. I do occasionally run out of energy or drive for whatever I’m writing, and the result is an abandoned piece of work. It tends to happen after maybe a week of working on one thing.

6. If you could be immediately fluent in any language other than your own, which would you choose?

A: Maybe Mandarin? I’m not altogether sure why.

7. If you could re-write any character’s arc from any fiction book, whose would you change?

A: Officer Collingswood from Kraken by China Miéville.

8. How?

A: I’d give her a much more prominent role in the story, and a more central hand in the plot.

9. Why?

A: She was quite simply a fascinating character. She’s a police officer who uses weird grungy street trash magic. At one point in the novel she summons ghosts of the idea of police officers out of old cathode-ray TVs and burning VHS tapes. I can picture her using neon strip lights to make a summoning circle.

10. What are the first three words you associate with “green”?

A: Calm. Close. Love.
