Ultra Age bits: the interview
So I'm going to try and look in deep at the various bits of the fanbook, at least those that look potentially interesting to see if there's something new and comment on my finding or lack thereof. Beware, my comments might not be positive.
So next I've been looking at the interview done to Horikoshi and his five editors, especially since I read somewhere it said something about Himiko's death. As we're talking about 11 pages of interview for once I'm not going to add the scans of the pages and I'll warn you the interview was translated by Google translate so take this with a grain of salt. I'll include the images from the interview, but I'll skip the 'memorable quotes' (the interview highlights some memorable quotes said in it by repeating them in a box).

FIRST PERSON IN CHARGE: KOIKE HITOSHI
STARTING FROM A DIFFICULT SITUATION!? THE STORY BEHIND THE BIRTH OF “MY HERO ACADEMIA”
----I understand that Koike-san has been involved with “My Hero Academia” since the series’ inception.
Koike: The first time I met with Horikoshi-sensei after I became his editor, he told me that he wanted to turn a one-shot he had written a long time ago, called “My Hero,” into a serialized work. I also liked that one-shot, so I was all for it. After that, we talked about how “if we want to serialize it, it should be set in a school.”
Horikoshi: Was that so? I don’t really remember (laughs).
Koike: That was 10 years ago (laughs).
Horikoshi: However, I remember that Koike-san was extremely helpful to me. At the time, I was stuck on writing the manga... After I started preparing for the serialization of “My Hero Academia”, we had meetings once a week, but there were many times when the storyboards were not completed.
Koike: “It’s okay if it’s not ready yet, but let’s just meet face to face and talk for an hour or two,” I said, and we had a meeting.
Horikoshi: I remember him encouraging me by saying, “Horikoshi-san, I think this is really good.” I felt really bad about showing up when there hadn’t been any progress.
Koike: I had to force him to come just for that part (laughs).
Horikoshi: Looking back now, that was a turning point. If Koike-san had given up on me, I probably wouldn’t have drawn manga again. But Koike-san never gave up on me, and thanks to him, I was able to create the work that is “My Hero Academia.”
Koike: But I’m not such a kind person. However, I’m a contrarian, so when Horikoshi-sensei said, “I can’t draw it,” I wanted him to draw it instead. I was like, “I’ll definitely get him to draw it!” (laughs). In that sense, I think Sensei and I got along well.
----What specifically were you struggling with?
Horikoshi: It took a year from the first meeting for “My Hero Academia” to complete chapters 1-3, but the first 7-8 pages of chapter 1, where the world view is introduced and Mt. Lady appears, were redrawn dozens of times.
Koike: The next scene after Mt. Lady is set in Deku and Bakugō’s middle school days, but there were actually a number of different scenarios to consider when deciding how to portray these two.
Horikoshi: I couldn’t think of a satisfactory development, so I got stuck there. There was a scenario where the two of them had already entered U.A., and also, the Villain rampaging on the first spread was a Nōmu.
----Was it planned for him to appear from the first chapter?
Horikoshi: Of course, they were just one of the normal Villains, with a completely different setting from the current Nōmu, but the Nōmu design was reused later. It was difficult at the time, but looking back now, I think I was saving up ideas for constructing “My Hero Academia” over that year.
Koike: But the climax of the first chapter, the scene where Deku, before he receives his “quirk”, rushes out to save Bakugō who is being attacked by a Villain, was solidified early on. I was shown that scene in advance, and I thought, “This could be an amazing piece.” In a normal new serialization, the highlight of the first chapter is when the main character awakens to his power and defeats the enemy, but I was shocked to see that “you can get catharsis without defeating the Villain.”
Tumblr media
Horikoshi: I remember that Koike-san praised me for that scene.
Koike: The second chapter, in which Deku trains while cleaning up the coastline and receives “One for All” from All Might, was originally supposed to be depicted as a flashback during the U.A. entrance exam arc in chapter 3. However, we decided to split it up because we felt that there were too many elements packed into one chapter.
Horikoshi: That’s why it inevitably feels like a lead-up to chapter 3.
Koike: I also thought, “Isn’t just cleaning up the coastline too plain?” and asked if we should do something more flashy. But Horikoshi-sensei said, “No, picking up trash is a good idea for Deku’s first hero activity.”
Horikoshi: I was a bit worried too, but I thought it would be better if Deku was a bit plain, so I went for it.
Koike: So I asked him to make it even more exciting.
Horikoshi: But I didn’t know how to liven things up either, so I just wrote the words “entrance exam,” “the day,” “morning,” and “six o’clock” in really big letters in the monologue about the day of the exam (laughs).
Koike: I think he added a bit more muscle to Deku (laughs). But contrary to our worries, the survey results for the second chapter were also good. Usually, new serializations drop off drastically in the second chapter. I was so happy that I called Sensei. I told him, “We can have confidence in this work called ‘My Hero Academia.’”
EVEN POPULAR AUTHORS ARE RAVING ABOUT IT!
Horikoshi: I was also really happy that Kishimoto-sensei, the creator of “NARUTO”, praised the second chapter.
Koike: That’s right, Kishimoto-sensei spoke to me and said, “The second chapter of ‘My Hero Academia’ was really good!”
Horikoshi: Kishimoto-sensei said, “The second chapter was even better than the first!” He especially liked Deku’s line, “I’m so blessed that All Might has done so much for me...”
Koike: It’s a good line. It’s something that Horikoshi-sensei would say, or rather, it’s a line that’s in sync with the author’s words. This is true of most shōnen manga, but the personality of the author, Horikoshi Kohei, fits perfectly into the main character, Midoriya Izuku.
Horikoshi: I don’t intend to draw manga characters as alter egos of myself, but my human side inevitably comes out.
Tumblr media
Koike: During an early meeting, Horikoshi-sensei said, “I’m drawing it from Deku’s perspective, with the stance of how he can be recognized by All Might.” That made me want to check out the work from the standpoint of, “If I were All Might, what kind of efforts by Deku would move me?”
Horikoshi: So we both created the work from Deku’s and All Might’s perspectives, right?
Koike: The third chapter, which depicts the entrance exams for U.A. High School, felt promising even during our meetings, and I thought, “This one’s a winner!”
Horikoshi: At the end, there was a cathartic moment when Deku used the power of “One For All” for the first time to defeat the test robot, so I thought it would be okay.
Koike: There were only a few other scenes where Ochako appeared, but when Deku almost fell over, he was saved by her “quirk.” That scene was also good. I fell in love with this girl just from that scene.
THE UNEXPECTED DEPARTURE OF THE EDITOR COULD HAVE LED TO THE END OF “MY HERO ACADEMIA”?!
Horikoshi: But due to the increased workload of Koike-san, Koike-san left his position after the third chapter. To be honest, I thought, “My Hero Academia is over...” That’s how big of a presence Koike-san had in my mind, and I thought of him as a pillar of My Hero Academia.
----It’s like Deku and All Might.
Horikoshi: That’s absolutely true.
Koike: I was also disappointed because it was a personnel order that I was removed from my position. What made it complicated for Horikoshi-sensei was that I was in charge of another work, and I was ordered not to be removed from that one. It was an order, but I also swallowed it, thinking, “If both works are to be successful, this is the only option.”
Horikoshi: I was so jealous that I thought to myself, “I won’t lose to the work that Koike-san is in charge of,” and for a while I felt a burning competitive spirit (laughs).
----As the first editor, what were your thoughts on the final chapter?
Koike: I was involved up until the appearance of All Might, Deku, Bakugō, Ochako, Īda, and Present Mic, so I was moved by how they all tried their best until the very end and came up with their own answers. Also, it’s a classic for a boys’ magazine to have strong heroes like Bakugō and Todoroki play an active role in battles, but I was also very moved by how Īda and Ochako played an active role in the final stages, not in battles, but in the direction of “saving people.” As a reader, I was happy to see the success of both heroes who save people and heroes who fight (laughs).

SECOND EDITOR: MONJI KENGO
RELATIONSHIPS OF TRUST BUILT THROUGH “HONEST WORK”
----Monji-san was in charge of the story from chapter 4 up until just before the school festival arc.
Horikoshi: Even now, I feel sorry that I may have been rude when the responsibility was handed over from Koike-san to Monji-san.
Monji: No, I didn’t think you were rude at all. But you did have a sad look on your face (laughs).
Horikoshi: I was really shocked when Koike-san was replaced (laughs).
Monji: Of course, it would be unpleasant to have the person who started the serialization be replaced so soon after it started. But when we started the meeting, I could sense Horikoshi-sensei’s desire to “work together,” so I felt relieved that he didn’t think “compared to Koike-san, this guy is no good” (laughs).
Horikoshi: I hadn’t thought about that at all (laughs).
Monji: As the person in charge at the time when “My Hero Academia” was starting to grow, it was fun to have the opportunity to experience various things such as the TV anime and movie adaptations. However, working with Horikoshi-sensei, I felt that he was a very anxious person. His humble attitude did not change even after “My Hero Academia” became a hit.
Horikoshi: A certain author once told me, “Once you become popular, you’ll be able to hold your head high and walk confidently in the middle of the street!” But I couldn’t feel that way at all, and I thought, “That’s a lie.” Even after I’d risen once, I was nervous as I drew “My Hero Academia,” thinking, “I have to make sure I don’t fall back!”
Monji: Horikoshi-sensei, you’re not the type to be greedy, but you do seem to be very particular about the surveys.
Horikoshi: I was nervous about the survey results every week (laughs). But one day, I made up my mind. Just before the WBC finals, Ōtani Shōhei said, “Let’s stop looking up them (to the US national team),” and at one point, I also thought, “Let’s put ‘My Hero Academia’ and ‘ONE PIECE’ on the same stage!” “We’re rivals! Let’s stop looking up to them!”
----What kind of person was Monji-san in your opinion, Horikoshi-sensei?
Horikoshi: He was a very reliable person. Even when I was stuck writing, he would cheerfully say, “It’s okay,” and it was a great relief.
Monji: I didn’t mean to give him any consolation, and I honestly thought “It’ll be fine” because “My Hero Academia” was really interesting. Also, I don’t want to lie to the author as much as possible. Even if the quality of the name is not satisfactory from the editor’s point of view, I can say “This is good enough” and pass it on, and that’s easy. But if I do that, I think the writer will realize that “This editor is lying.” So I told Horikoshi-sensei things like “Let’s fix this part.”
Tumblr media
Horikoshi: I had an awful lot of trust in Monji-san. If he had even once said to me, “We don’t have much time left, so I’ll give the OK even with this quality,” I don’t think I would have trusted him at all.
Monji: But I was convinced that Horikoshi-sensei’s manga is not just about technique and story structure, but also has soul, so it’s definitely interesting. I was thrilled when I read the manuscript for “Todoroki Shōto: Origin.”
Horikoshi: I wrote that chapter with momentum and emotion (laughs).
THE SECOND EDITOR’S EFFORTS HELP HIM OVERCOME HIS SLUMP!?
Horikoshi: Another time I felt that Monji-san saved me was the chapter in the Intern arc with Kirishima & Fat Gum and Rappa & Tengai. In fact, Monji-san drew the reference name for this chapter.
Monji: No no, actually Horikoshi-sensei made quite a few revisions to it and it became quite interesting, so it was just a rough scribble of the idea.
Horikoshi: No, I’d like to say that that’s definitely not the case. At the time, I was stuck on my writing, but when I saw the spread of Kirishima drawn by Monji-san, I realized, “This is what My Hero Academia needs right now!” and “This is what a shōnen manga is all about!”
Monji: I’m glad to hear you say that.
Horikoshi: It takes a lot of courage to draw a double page spread. Because it’s the scene where you have to decide the most. Back then, I would put the brakes on at that point.
Monji: I liked both Kirishima and Fatgum, so I thought, “It would definitely be fun to tell a story like this.”
Horikoshi: From that point on, it started to get fun, and the image of the battle between Mirio and Chisaki that was planned to follow came to mind, so I drew just that part first.
Monji: I was surprised when he suddenly said to me, “I’ve drawn 15 pages of storyboards” (laughs).
Horikoshi: That’s why I was definitely saved by Monji-san at that time.
Monji: I’m happy. When the chapter about Kirishima was made into an anime, I suddenly got a LINE message from Horikoshi-sensei saying, “I want Monji-san to be credited in the original story for this episode,” and I was really touched. “You remembered me.”
Horikoshi: It was such a big event for me.
----As the second editor, what did you think of the final chapter of “My Hero Academia”?
Monji: In the chapter “A Young Woman's Declaration,” the story changed from “The story of how I became the greatest hero” to “The story of how everyone becomes the greatest hero,” and he declared, “This is the story of My Hero Academia.” I think that mindset was carried through to the very end, to the final battle. In the final chapter, Deku loses his “quirk” power, but he is resurrected as a hero with the armored suit that everyone made for him. I was very moved by that development. “You don’t become a hero alone, you become a hero together with the others.” I thought that this was one of the answers that the work “My Hero Academia” gave. I was also happy when Bakugō called out to Deku at the end, “Come on, Deku.”

THIRD EDITOR: YORITOMI RYŌSUKE
MAGICAL CREATIVITY
----Yoritomi-san, I heard that you were in charge of the Aoyama Anomaly arc through to the middle of the All-Out War Between Heroes and Enemies arc.
Horikoshi: After Yoritomi-san came, I changed the way I treated my editor a little. Before that, Koike-san, who was my first editor, was older than me, and Monji-san was the same age as me, but I’m younger than Yoritomi-san. They’re from a generation that knew about “My Hero Academia” before they joined Shueisha, so I realized that I can’t rely on them and call “editor-saan!” like I have in the past. I had to be more confident.
Yorifumi: But Horikoshi-sensei listened carefully to what I had to say even though I was younger than him, and our meetings were always very friendly, so it was easy to work with him.
----Yorifumi-san, what kind of author is Horikoshi-sensei in your opinion?
Yorifumi: Horikoshi-sensei has amazing ideas and the ability to absorb new ideas. Right after I became his editor, a character called Gentle appeared in the school festival arc.
Horikoshi: When I was meeting with Yorifumi-san at a karaoke bar, I said, “Since it’s the school festival, I want to make it a light-hearted story,” and “I want the enemy to be as stupid as possible, a foolish gentleman.”
Yorifumi: At that point, Horikoshi-sensei had already sketched Gentle’s visual, and he had already solidified his image. When we asked each other, “So how can we introduce his foolish gentlemanliness?”, I happened to be watching the TV drama “Aibō”, so I said, “How about pouring tea from a high place like Ukyo-san, so that it gets all sopping wet?” and it was included in the manuscript. What’s more, La Brava wasn’t even there at the meeting stage, but then she was standing next to Gentle with tea on her head (laughs). I was happy that my idea was adopted, and by having the character La Brava standing next to him, it emphasized Gentle’s foolish gentlemanliness. I thought he was a person with an incredible amount of creativity.
Horikoshi: Isn’t that just me getting ideas from other people?
Yorifumi: No, it’s just that Sensei has a great ability to absorb essences from the outside world into his work. I like soccer, but the sensei wasn’t a soccer fan at the time. But when I told him an episode from Messi’s childhood, it was translated into an episode from Hawks’ childhood, and the visual of Hawks drawn on the back of the comic was inspired by the earrings worn by Cristiano Ronaldo. The World Cup was being held at the time, but the sensei was busy, so he didn’t watch it closely. But he found cool essences in the limited time he had and incorporated them into his work.

Tumblr media
Horikoshi: I didn’t have a lot of ideas, so I picked up things outside of my scope from casual conversations with my editor.
Yorifumi: We both like comedy, and one day we were talking about a certain comedian, and a character based on that person appeared in the story (laughs). I thought the process of creating a character was like magic. Even during meetings, Sensei is drawing something in his sketchbook. Sometimes a character is born from that. I think it’s amazing that he continues to draw in his free time even though he’s busy writing at work.
Horikoshi: No, it’s just to give the impression that something is being drawn.
Yorifumi: But Agoyamato Tsutsutaka-kun, that character was born from a sketch. I was wondering “Who is this guy?”, and then he appeared in the manuscript, so I was surprised. There were many other wonderful character designs, so I thought “Are they going to use this guy!??” (laughs).
Horikoshi: Isn’t it cool? The space battleship shape of the face is based on the Space Battleship Yamato, which is brilliant.
Yorifumi: That’s why I think not many people realize that he has the name Yamato. He gets a concussion every time he shoots the Wave Motion Gun from his jaw, right? Why do I remember a setting like this that is never shown in the main story...?
Horikoshi: He is really good at his job.
Yorifumi: Is it okay to have so many stories like this? (laughs) But Sensei had an outline of the scenes he wanted to depict in his mind, and we struggled during our weekly meetings to come up with a way to get the story to that point.
Horikoshi: It was hard to connect the dots in the story. When Deku and Bakugō were almost killed by Shigaraki in the All-Out War arc, I was really stuck on what to do next. But then, talking with Yorifumi-san, we thought, “It would be great if Gran Torino came to the rescue,” and we thought, “That’s it!” I got really excited (laughs).
Yoritomi: I remember that Horikoshi-sensei was very happy when his worries were resolved.
Horikoshi: That meeting was fun (laughs). Also, when we had to choose between two options at important turning points in the story, we had a lot of discussions about what to do and which way to go.
Yorifumi: We had discussions like, “Can we stop killing off these characters?” Especially All Might and Endeavor.
ENDEAVOR AVOIDS DEATH WITH A SINGLE MOVE
Horikoshi: Endeavor was supposed to die somewhere after the High-End Nōmu fight in volume 21.
Yorifumi: That’s right. At first I was also like, “No, that’s too much...”, but then I gave up and thought, “It will be what it will be,” and then Endeavor’s turnaround was so amazing that he survived.
Horikoshi: As I was drawing it, I thought it would be wrong for Endeavor to die here.
Yorifumi: Endeavor will continue to carry that cross and atone for his past mistakes.
Horikoshi: I think it was around this time that I started to think that I wanted to make a story with as few deaths as possible. I love the tension of life and death, and it’s necessary, but I wanted to keep it to a minimum in “My Hero Academia.”
Yoritomi: But on the other hand, they end up suffering serious injuries in the fierce fighting, so they end up in a terrible state.
Horikoshi: I made sure that it would definitely leave a scar.
Yorifumi: But it’s precisely because the characters are struggling like this but are still doing their best that their words are more persuasive and I felt even more encouraged reading them.
----As the third editor, what did you think of the final chapter of “My Hero Academia”?
Yoritomi: The story has taken many twists and turns since we first discussed it, and there have been many changes.
Horikoshi: Yes, I once told Yoritomi-san that “My Hero Academia will end in one more year,” but it ended up continuing for five years (laughs).
Yorifumi: In the beginning, there was a plot where All Might was killed by Shigaraki, and then Bakugō tried to kill Shigaraki, but Deku stopped him.
Horikoshi: That was one idea.
Yorifumi: Even though there were many changes, I think we stuck to the theme of “the greatest hero” that we set out in the first chapter until the very end, and I think that gave the readers a push in the right direction, making it a positive and fantastic final chapter!
Tumblr media
FORTH EDITOR: TAGUCHI HIKARU
DEALING WITH MASS DEATHS SOON AFTER TAKING CHARGE
----I heard that Taguchi-san was in charge of the period from the middle of the all-out war to the beginning of the second decisive battle.
Taguchi: Up until the point where Endeavor and Hawks start fighting All For One together.
Horikoshi: I remember that every time we finished a meeting, Taguchi-san and I would play a certain Super Smash Bros. game (laughs).
Taguchi: A certain bird character that Horikoshi-sensei uses is very strong (laughs).
Horikoshi: At the time I was very busy with the original art exhibition and the third movie.
Taguchi: Over the New Year holidays, we asked him to draw some pictures for an original art exhibition…
Horikoshi: That was a tough deadline.
Taguchi: The line drawing of the B1-sized picture is finished with only two days left, and then we start coloring from there.
Horikoshi: I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
Taguchi: No, no. Not only the third film, but even the fourth film after I was put in charge by Imamura-san, it was amazing how they were able to handle the amount of material, including the special booklets for visitors…
Tumblr media
Horikoshi: Since they were going to take the trouble to make it, I wanted the people who had worked so hard to be rewarded as much as possible. As a result, I ended up making the editor work twice as hard.
Taguchi: No, no. Going back to when it was being serialized, it was the time when the all-out war ended and many heroes, including Midnight, died. Soon after I took over, I remember having a discussion with Horikoshi-sensei like, “Should this character be on the death list?” Specifically, Majestic.
Horikoshi: We often had discussions like, “Is this development going a bit too far?”
Taguchi: There were many difficult decisions to make, but it was a refreshing experience to imagine the readers’ reactions and discuss which parts I wanted to include and which parts I wanted to suppress.
----Are there any other memorable episodes?
Taguchi: After the all-out war, when Deku wanders off and returns to U.A., Ochako cries out, “Please let this be his Hero Academia!!” That part was the only one that Horikoshi-sensei had shown me about a month before.
Horikoshi: I often draw an exciting image first. When I’m putting together a story, I get excited and scribble down the scene. I get stabbed with the strongest spear, told to draw this week’s storyboard before that, but having this helps me to keep the excitement going on the path to get there.
Taguchi: When I saw that scene, I had a premonition that “this chapter will be amazing.” When it was published in the magazine, the response to the survey was very positive, and I even got a message from Koike-san, who was in charge of the original, saying “Why not do it?”
TOGETHER WITH THE SUFFERING OF THE TODOROKI FAMILY
Horikoshi: Taguchi-san helped us out with the tough developments towards the end.
Taguchi: There were a lot of heavy chapters related to the Todoroki family. In the chapter where the Todoroki family somehow managed to come together and face the future at the hospital, Sensei was worried and said, “This is serious...I wonder if this is okay.”
Horikoshi: It was extremely tough and difficult, so Jeanist saved me.
Taguchi: Sensei had been talking for a long time about how Endeavor shouldn’t be forgiven, so this development was the result of much consideration, and it was very moving for me.
----What did you think of the final chapter?
Taguchi: I was in charge of a lot of the dark developments towards the end, so when I left I was worried, “Will a lot of allies die?” But in the final chapter, even though everyone was wounded, I think it was a classic ending for a shōnen manga. Sensei was unsure whether to have a scene where Shigaraki appears in the background at the end, so he maintained a stoic attitude until the end, and I feel like I really appreciate his hard work.
Tumblr media
FIFTH EDITOR: IMAMURA TAKURŌ
ENDEAVOR WILL FACE OFF AGAINST “RURIDRAGON”!?
----Imamura-san, is it true that you were in charge from the middle of the final battle onwards?
Imamura: In the story, Endeavor fights All For One, and in the collected volumes, it’s around volume 36. When I first became his editor, Horikoshi-sensei pointed to Endeavor and said, “This is my Ruri-chan.” I didn’t understand what he meant at the time, but it was just sensei’s own playfulness (laughs).
Horikoshi: At that time, “RuriDragon” had just started, and it was incredibly popular from the beginning, and I liked it too. Ruri-chan can breathe fire from her mouth. So I felt a sense of rivalry and tried to make Endeavor breathe fire in that chapter. I thought, “I have a character who can breathe fire, too!” Of course, no one knew about it.
Imamura: In terms of the story, from the final battle to the end, it was the most difficult period for Sensei.
Horikoshi: But Imamura-san was very helpful because he gave me objective opinions. When I asked him, “This is what I think, what do you think?” I interpreted his response as probably being close to the general reader’s point of view.
Imamura: Shōji-kun’s Heteromorph discrimination story, which I took over soon after, was written with particular care and consideration.
Horikoshi: It’s a story where even one wrong line could hurt someone in real life, so I was grateful for Imamura-san’s objective perspective.
Imamura: Thank you. I’ve realized once again since I became your editor that Sensei’s manga is insanely interesting. However, you also linger with care about the names and the illustrations (laughs). I was wondering, when did the popularity poll anniversary illustrations start to have that density? There are an incredible number of characters, aren’t there?
Horikoshi: I think it started when I drew 20 students from Class A plus two teachers for the first anniversary. Once I drew it, I didn’t want to lower the density of the image any more. I once tried reducing the number of people, but I really regretted it.
Imamura: From the reader’s perspective, it’s nice to have a lot of characters (laughs). What I found amazing about working with sensei was his spirit of service to his readers. He fills the blank pages of the comics with original illustrations, and there are pictures not only on the back of the cover but also on the back of the obi. I’ve never seen anything like this (laughs). The character introduction pages also have a playful variety.
Horikoshi: I’m sorry for causing you so much worry regarding the progress of the project (laughs).
The sudden announcement of Bakugō and Toga’s deaths
----Is there a chapter that left a lasting impression on you, Imamura-san?
Imamura: The chapter where Bakugō is on the brink of death in the fight with Shigaraki, and the chapter where Toga dies. When it was Bakugō, it was right after I took over, and I was surprised when he said, “Imamura-san, Bakugō is going to die, but is that okay?” But at that time, the plan for Bakugō’s revival had already been made.
Horikoshi: I didn’t want to kill the character, but I also wanted to express Shigaraki’s overwhelming strength. So I killed him off, with the intention of reviving him later.
Imamura: When I asked him, “When will he wake up?” he said, “About a year or a year and a half later in the real world.” I couldn’t immediately reply, “That’s fine.” I knew Bakugō would come back to life, but fans would have to wait a year (laughs).
Horikoshi: Imamura-san actually consulted with an emergency medical technician.
Imamura said, “Theoretically, if we could sew the patient up the moment the heart explodes, he might be able to survive.”
Horikoshi: I was able to depict it with peace of mind because I was told that it was a possibility. It was really helpful that Imamura-san was able to do things like this quickly and with agility.
Imamura: And the chapter where Toga dies. Originally, she wasn’t supposed to die. She was supposed to get caught and serve time in prison.
Horikoshi: I was going ahead with that concept, but then I changed my mind halfway through.
Imamura: I was walking around Shinjuku when I got a call from sensei, who asked, “Is it okay for Toga to die after all?” I thought, “This is no joke,” so I canceled all my plans for the rest of the day and spent about three hours with Sensei discussing whether or not he should die. We explored various scenarios.
Horikoshi: Actually, there was an idea that Toga was still alive... Sometimes Ochako would go to the forest where the battle had taken place and leave a syringe full of her own blood there. Then the next day it would be gone.
Imamura: It does seem to hint at her survival.
Horikoshi: But in the end, we decided not to do that because it would mean no one would take responsibility. In the end, Imamura-san also gave us the OK.
Imamura: I also had a hard time deciding whether death or survival was better.
Horikoshi: But thanks to you, this chapter received high marks in the reader survey.
Imamura: After finishing the manuscript, Sensei would do a self-check. Then, in the final scene, he added an exclamation mark to Toga’s monologue about being an “ordinary girl” and made it “an ordinary girl!” Just that one thing changed the nuance completely, and it gave me goosebumps. It made the reading experience completely different. The end of the girl, Toga Himiko, became sad but bright.
Horikoshi: Doing things like that ends up delaying the manuscript (laughs).
----Imamura-san, during the final chapter that you were in charge of, was there anything that stood out to you?
Imamura: I was quite naïve during the writing the final chapter.
Horikoshi: I was worried about whether readers would accept the story of Deku, who has lost his “quirk” and grown up eight years later, receiving an armored suit from his friends and going off on a date. I was worried that it would ruin the story so far. But while I was in that state, all of my past editors came to my workplace...
Imamura: We had planned to meet up from the start, but I contacted all the previous editors and said, “Sensei is feeling anxious about the final chapter, so could you please come earlier?” and they came to Sensei’s workplace.
Horikoshi: It was incredibly encouraging when everyone read the draft of the final chapter and said, “It’s fine, isn’t it?”, and thanks to that I was able to finish drawing the story called “My Hero Academia”...!

That is until a storm forces his ship to make repairs at a notorious pirate port, and he finds himself press-ganged by a cutthroat band of pirates and dragged into a life of peril, adventure, and romance.

The smell is warm, encompassing him in a lustrous hug that made his insides feel, oddly, like curdled milk; spoiled and hot. And yet, it felt strangely nice as the smell wafted across the room, filling his senses with... what was it again? Kirishima grabbed the bag, the plastic crinkling as he did so. Ah, hazelnut cream. His and Aizawa-Sensei's favorite flavor apart from cinnamon streusel.
"I'm not good at giving advice," Aizawa muttered, clasping his hands around the scalding mug, unfazed. "I'm sorry."
Kirishima didn't smile.
"It's okay, Aizawa-sensei. I don't mind just sitting here."
"Well, I don't mind sitting with you."
Or: Aizawa notices a change in one of his strongest students, and in a desperate attempt to get him back to his normal self, accompanies him every night for a cup of coffee and occasional midnight snack in the common room's kitchen. However, he finds that no amount of caffeine can keep his student's demons away, and despite his growing concern, he tends to more pressing matters. Like how recently imprisoned villain, Kendo Rappa, had somehow escaped his maximum-security cell and was on the hunt for a rematch against a certain red-haired hero...

Suffocating (Almost like a Hug)

“Okay,” he said, struggling to keep the bitter tone out of his voice. He didn't really want to see a therapist, but he would if Aizawa told him to.
“What is it, problem child? Just tell me what's bothering you.”
“It's just...ugh. Seeing a therapist. It doesn't sound very manly,” Kirishima muttered, staring down at the floor. Neither is crying your eyes out in front of your teacher, he thought bitterly.
“I go to therapy twice a week, you tellin’ me I'm not manly?” Aizawa asked, a small smirk on his face. Kirishima felt his eyes widen at that.
OR
Kirishima is struggling with nightmares after his fight against Rappa. Aizawa is there to help him realize it's okay to ask for help when you're struggling.

My Hero Academia: Bomb Shell
My Hero Academia: Bomb Shell by DabiHawksEvents
Bakugou's dream has always been to become the number one hero, the best that Japan has to offer. After about twelve years, it happens though not in the way he expects. After a fight to help Midoriya take down All For One for good, the villain leaves this world with one last wound by taking Bakugou's beloved quirk just before he's put down. With no way of getting his quirk back, and the reality set in that he's now quirkless Bakugou naturally begins to spiral, putting both his health and his relationships at risk as he battles with emotions and problems he's never experienced before.
This story will contain dark themes, and multiple ships that I felt were appropriate within this specific retelling of unofficial future events. This of course is by no means canonical, I have not caught up with the manga nor do I plan to anytime soon. This was purely written out of a desire to share a story that my friend and I were quite proud of.

The Underground Sky
The Underground Sky by Jasdidion
What changes when everyone's favourite cinnamon roll has entirely different parents? What happens when two pro heroes have fun in U.A. 15 years prior and have a kid?
Let's go see what happens if Izuku was instead born and raised by this new hero couple! They will have some trouble, but in the end they will watch their child grow... And they will watch him fly in the skies of the underground society as the best underground hero!
More information directly relating to the story in the notes! Be sure to read em!
Okay! As usual! I use a lot of O.C.'s from other fics! It's mostly just parents and such, but I still appreciate people who make O.C.s! I make a few myself and can say it's very difficult! I don't own MHA of course, and I don't own the O.C.s of others!

It was all an accident. Izuku never meant to wander as far into the forest as he had. He hadn’t meant to cross that tiny stream, and walk up that broken down flight of stairs. He hadn’t known what the consequences would be. He just thought it would be a good place to take photos. An innocent outing on summer afternoon. Izuku would never have imagined what it would lead too. (The filthy, kinky Spirited Away AU no one wanted)
