I’m sorry?? What?
Was reading a Wikipedia article on Mori Ōgai and apparently his daughter Mari was the “creator” of the YAOI GENRE?!?! I’m reeling.
Wtf

I think it's a mistake to assume Kafka Asagiri's pen name is a direct reference to Franz Kafka's writings rather than a reference to how Kafka is interpreted in modern Japanese literature. Like, Metamorphosis is less effective for understanding absurdism in Bungo Stray Dogs than Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami or The Box Man by Abe Kobo.
In any genre analysis, cultural context is crucial. For example, there are key distinctions between Japanese Gothic and Southern Gothic, Taisho Roman and European Romanticism, etc. If you aren't adjusting the filters through which you're performing your analysis to the relevant cultural context, you're inevitably going to blunt your understanding.

Summer 2023 Anime Roundup
Tumblr media
Anime of the Season – My Happy Marriage
I had been looking forward to this supernatural-tinged romance set in Taisho-era Japan ever since it was announced in 2022, and it did not disappoint me in the least. It follows a young woman who’s been sent to live with a fiancé without her input after a deeply traumatic childhood marked by physical and emotional abuse spearheaded by her spiteful stepmother and apathetic father. Despite his reputation in society as a cold, callous man who drives women away, her fiancé hides a kind, loyal personality behind a stern front and becomes instrumental to her recovery, encouraging her at every turn to stand tall on her own two feet.
The first half could be a little frustrating at times as the traumatized female lead struggled to speak up for herself and take up space, but that only makes her eventual growth into a more assertive woman all the more satisfying. Her voice actress does a fantastic job of slowly increasing the volume and strength of her voice over the course of the series as Miyo gains confidence. Adding to this performance is a beautiful soundtrack by Evan Call that blends perfectly with the dramatic story and gorgeous backgrounds full of traditional architecture surrounded by blooming flowers. It’s rare to get a joseimuke anime with this high-quality production, and I loved every minute of it. 9/10
Tumblr media
First Runner-Up – Bungo Stray Dogs S5
At the beginning of summer, I hadn’t watched any of this series past season 1, but the hype got to me and I picked the series back up halfway through this season. Thank god I did, because this season was incredibly good, with well-animated action, gripping suspense, and a resolution that was both world-altering and intensely personal. 8/10
Tumblr media
Second Runner-Up – Undead Murder Farce
A sardonic half-oni man teams up with an immortal severed head and her fierce bodyguard/maid to travel around Europe to pursue the people who stole her body, while solving mysteries involving monsters along the way. The mystery writing was a little uneven and exposition heavy, but the playful dynamic between the characters was magnetic. 8/10
Horimiya: The Missing Pieces – This season consists of the scenes cut from the first adaptation of the manga and lays them out thematically, rather than chronologically like the manga. Taken as a comedic slice of life, I think it works really well, as the vignettes can just sit and be amusing without feeling like they’re stalling for time to avoid ending the series. 8/10
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts – For the first time in almost a decade, we got an anime for a Hana to Yume fantasy romance manga, and this complete adaptation of the story totally hit the spot. Our sacrifice turned queen-to-be was delightfully feisty, and our beast king was perfectly protective and encouraging. 7/10
Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero – I went into this expecting a simple comedy on the ecchi side about a down-and-out hero and the demon lord he defeated ten years ago, and I got that, but I also got a really well-written fantasy story with complex antagonists and a delightful little romance with real chemistry between the titular characters. 7/10
Bleach: TYBW Part 2 – This part of the new season was right back to the problems I had with the original run of the series. The visuals are great, with stylish character designs, nice saturated colors, and smooth animation, but the story relies on stringing together fights between side/minor characters more than it should. 7/10
BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! – I don’t generally watch female idol shows, but everyone’s praise got to me, and I ended up checking this out at the end of the season. The character drama is excellent for the most part, and the music is good, but the 3D CG animation was not my favorite, and Saki felt poorly written just to seed a sequel season. 7/10
MIX S2 – This is the spiritual successor to the 80s series Touch, but it’s loosely related, not a direct sequel, so it stands alone just fine. This high school baseball series has the Adachi standard emotional sucker punch to the gut along with a generous helping of dry humor from its large cast of likeable characters. 7/10
Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari S2 – If this was better animated, this would be a solid shounen action series with a romance subplot. The writing left nothing to complain about, with a large cast of well-rounded characters and a satisfying romance between two characters who actually suit each other. 7/10
Sugar Apple Fairy Tale Part 2 – What a complicated series this is to talk about. The art and animation were both pretty good, and the story was at least trying to be deliberate in how it addressed the inequality in its world, but I’m not sure it handled the slavery issue consistently. 7/10
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior – People are starting to complain about all these villainess adaptations, but I’m enjoying this trend of female main characters working to avoid a disastrous end by gathering allies around them. I just wish the visuals for this particular anime weren’t so insipid. 7/10
Edens Zero S2 – This season felt a bit more coherent than the first, being split into two main arcs instead of several smaller ones, and introduced some genuinely tough opponents with tricky abilities, while also revealing secrets about the main crew. 6/10
Sweet Reincarnation – This reincarnation isekai does very little to distinguish itself from the rest of the crowded field of isekai, but it didn’t have an RPG menu and the pastry chef turned precocious lesser noble didn’t push Japanese food on the people of the other world, so I kept watching. 6/10
The Misfit of Demon King Academy S2 – Season 1 of this series was such a fun genre-savvy romp, but this season was a tedious Proper Noun fantasy that was extremely confusing and basically no fun to watch. 5/10

Miraitabi - Inspirations
Yuuya:
Tumblr media
Seto Kousuke - Kagerou Project
Shinpei Ajiro - Summer Time Rendering
Jou “Joe” Tazuna - Your Turn to Die
Atsushi Nakajima - Bungou Stray Dogs
Oz - Pandora Hearts
ARAKI (Utaite >> channel)
Asahi:
Tumblr media
Mitsuri Kanroji - Kimetsu no yaiba
Yuji Itadori - Jujutsu Kaisen
Roland Fortis - Vanitas no Carte
Kenji Miyazawa - Bungou Stray Dogs
Nagomu Irino - Deaimon
Meychan (Utaite >> channel)
Saigo:
Tumblr media
Kiyotaka Yagashira - Holmes of Kyoto
Accelerator - A Certain Magical Index
Tamahiko Shima - Taisho Otome Fairy Tale
Cale Henituse - Trash of the Count's Family
Rufus Barma - Pandora Hearts
nqrse (Utaite >> channel)
And because their characters are initially inspired by their respective voice claims, so…
BONUS: Fun Facts about their voice claims
If someone does notice, each voice claim of Miraitabi’s members are all based on the three real singers who usually do a collaboration together and yes, I personally adore their dynamics.
Despite Yuuya being the youngest in the group, his voice claim is the oldest; basically the parent of two chaos over there.
All three of them like cats and have ever kept at least one cat at one point in their lives. Likewise, the Miraitabi members are currently adopting “Ojou-chan” in their care (seriously why most great singers always have pet cats?).
They often do the cover of Vocaloid songs.
Saigo’s voice claim is the only official rapper in the group; moreover, he is a hypmic fan in real life. He plays the game and even did a short cover of Buster Bros verse from Division Rap Battle.
... TO BE CONTINUE FOR MORE(?)

About Taishou stray woof woofs I THINK YOU SHLD WRITE SMTHING BOUT IT? I WOULD LOVE TO READ YES YES YES!!!!
Tumblr media
(Excerpt from Taishou Stray Dogs, chapter 1)
The chill seeped through his clothes, into his muscles, into his bones. He really might get sick.
“D-did I make it…?” Akutagawa mumbled, reaching out to grab the currently unconscious man’s wrist. Before a pulse could be checked, the body moved on its own, jerking violently and out of control. “Easy there!” Akutagawa encouraged, moving to the man’s side and helping him cough out the water from his throat.
Now that he could take a good look, it was a man around his twenties. He looked shabby, though that was probably expected of someone who fell in a river. Tendrils of dark brown hair and…are those bandages? dripped water on the grass. Akutagawa noted with a touch of unease that the man’s head was wrapped up with bandages, one eye hidden from view.
Dangerous, his mind whispered. Stay away. This guy is bad news.
Naturally, Akutagawa ignored it.
When the man’s gaze finally settled on Akutagawa, he drew a deep, shuddering breath.
“Tsk, was it you? The one who interrupted my jump?” The man said, making a face that almost looked like a pout.
“…Interrupt?” Akutagawa blinked water off his lashes. “Uh, hold on, I think there was a misunderstanding. Didn’t I just rescue you from drowning?”
“But I jumped.”
“Jump?”
“If you must know, I was trying to commit suicide, but you just had to come along and get in the way.”
A chill ran down Akutagawa’s spine.
What should he do now? He had saved someone who did not want to be saved. What could he ever do to atone for committing the same mistake again?
During his frantic thoughts, he noticed the man had gone silent; for how many of his breaths, Akutagawa wasn’t sure.
“Wait, could it be?” The man’s visible eye gleamed as he loomed over. “That you—” Akutagawa thought he’d go cross-eyed as he leaned back instinctively while the brunet continued to invade his personal space, “—are an angel of death sent to ferry me to the other side of the River Sanzu?”
“… … ”
Thankfully, Akutagawa was spared from having to make a reply by the deep growling of his stomach. Mortified, Akutagawa covered his stomach on impulse.
“You must be hungry, lad.” The awkwardness of their situation stretched on, but a smile began to etch itself around the stranger’s lips. “To have a pure, cheerful, and energetic suicide without fuss is my motto. Since I ended up causing you trouble, it is only right I make my amends. What do you say to going out and eating dinner?“
Akutagawa still had a lot of questions, namely why the stranger seemed so cheerful even when his suicide attempt was foiled, and what was with that ridiculous motto, but for now he opted to address the more important matter at hand. “Um. I don’t have any money.”
“Not to worry, it’s all on me!”
Relief poured in like blessed rain. “Oh, that would be a great help. Actually, I haven’t eaten in— ”
Another rumbling echoed deep and low, but this time, it wasn’t Akutagawa’s stomach at fault.
“I’m hungry as well,” confessed the brunet as Akutagawa stared. “And now that I think about it…” He pulled the pockets of his soaked coat inside out. “It seems my wallet got washed away by the river too.”
“Ah. That is unfortunate.” Akutagawa nodded, although a part of him already knew this was too good to be true. If nothing else, at least he had someone he (sort of) knew in this unfamiliar city.
“There you are, you useless waste of bandage!”
It was a shrill and enraged voice that came from the other side of the river. Startled, Akutagawa swiveled his head around to see a tall bespectacled man, arms forming a cross over his chest. He was dressed a little like a salaryman, wearing beige pants matched with a beige vest over a black long-sleeved dress shirt, as opposed to the brunet with him who looked like a drowned cat.
Well, Akutagawa amended to himself, the description wasn’t entirely inaccurate. He did almost drown.
Art by the awesome @fukasenanairo. She also helped flesh out TSHSD, where would this be without her and @vanillue-sensei.
Anyway, as you’ve probably suspected after reading, the characters will be very different from their BSD counterparts. You can say this is my take on how BSD would be if they had different personalities and abilities. And because of that, this is not just a simple AU but a totally different story altogether, merely borrowing the elements I found most interesting in BSD.
I’ve worked on bits and pieces here and there, but I’m a slow writer and not too sure with how/when/if I would publish what I have so far. Probably, you’ll see TSHD pop up again without notice!

InuKog Fic Rec List
Bodyguard AU (series; E): @dyslexicsquirrel
What do you do when you're stuck with a bodyguard you hate and unexpectedly go into heat? You fuck the bodyguard, of course.
Or: Inuyasha thought it was a good idea.
Broken Windows (NR): @inwiste
Kouga wished he could say that rocks hitting his window in the middle of the night was the last thing he expected to hear, though that would be a lie. They had become a common (and not entirely unwelcome) part of Kouga's life.
In which Inuyasha goes to Kouga's house in the middle of the night and throws some rocks at his boyfriend's window to get his attention (and possibly a kiss or two).
The Canine Truth (M): Yukio (Ao3)
After Kouga gets hurt in a fight with Moryoumaru and Inuyasha saves him and takes care of him in a hiding place away from everyone, the two canines have enough time to get to know each other better and maybe even find truth about each other's feelings.
Demon Bites, Human Skin (M): @ghostrobin
Inuyasha is going through a full moon without Kagome by his side, but that doesn't mean he's as alone as he thinks he is.
Dog Bet (E) by PaperFox19 (Ao3)
Inuyasha and Kouga make a wager that Kouga loses now he must pay the price.
For the Good of the Club (E): @fawn-eyed-girl
Inuyasha Taisho has been sent by his father, Tōga, the president of the White Dog Motorcycle Club, to negotiate a deal with the president of the Wolf Den MC, Kōga Kobayashi. Inuyasha is eager to make his father proud, but he’s also eager to see if he can get a certain Wolf Den club president to notice him.
Because Inuyasha has heard rumors. That Kōga Kobayashi likes men. And Inuyasha can’t help but wonder if Kōga Kobayashi would like him, too.
In the Company of Wolves (T): @mythicamagic
Every place feels like a temporary home for a Hanyou. Kouga offers Inuyasha a welcome respite within his wolf pack.
Lonely Figures and Rendezvous (T): @angeljays
Koga happens upon Inuyasha during the new moon and the two share some words of comfort and of realities.
Pancakes and racing games (G): @inukouga
Sesshomaru, (very reluctantly) asks Kouga and Inuyasha to watch Rin for a while.
Stray (E) by 3phemeral (Ao3)
Where will Inuyasha go when all the humans he knew are gone? Kagome's last words give him some idea, and he tracks down one of his only comrades left - Kouga.
Until You Cross the Finish Line (T): @gaykagome
High school track star Kouga is good at a lot of things: talking to his e-boy crush Inuyasha without putting his foot in his mouth is not one of those things.
Where He Belongs (E): Aikawa_Akihito (Ao3)
Years after Naraku's defeat, Kagome never came back from her time and Inuyasha is alone in the world once more. When he finds a wolf cub,the lone survivor of a vicious attack, will he be able to get it to the wolf prince and find a place among the pack?

do you know any english otome with matsuoka yoshitsugu acting in it? besides taisho x alice
YES!!! That's the VA of Kirito right?
Actually one of the games I mentioned in my previous post Olympia Soiree has him as one of the main guys!!!
I have not played Olympia Soiree since it just recently came out in English (September I think?) (For Nintendo Switch) But I'm excited for it because, like I said, the voice actor lineup is amazing! You'll hear the following VAs in Olympia Soiree:
Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (Kirito)
Nobunaga Shimazaki (Kazuha JP Ver./YUKI SOMA FROM FRUITS BASKET MY GOD/Haruka Nanase from Free!)
Yuma Uchida (KYO SOMA FROM FRUITS BASKET THE SOMA BROTHERS ARE HERE I CANT EVEN FUNCTION)
Tomokazu Sugita (Chrom JP Ver. from Fire Emblem)
Yuto Uemura (TAMAKI FROM MY HERO/ATSUSHI FROM BUNGO STRAY DOGS)
Another Otome Game that Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is in:
Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly (not really a favourite of mine but to each their own, PSVita) (Other VAs include the VAs of Kageyama, Sakusa, Natsu, Tokoyami)
These two are the English ones I know of but I'm sure he's defo in more Japanese otome games.
Realizing that Kageyama, Todoroki and Nishinoya/Bakugou's voice actors actually do a lot of otome games XD
EDIT: @she-on GASP I totally missed that haha :D Forgot that Xiao is also Matsuoka’s character

astra lost in space: the short & dramatic space adventure
Tumblr media
do you like the thrill of the promised neverland? the sleek animation in psycho-pass? the drama cut by comic relief in full metal alchemist? the "family by choice" trope & high school kids acting like high school kids? if yes to all, go read astra lost in space! if you're not convinced enough or you've already watched the anime, i'm here to give you a push of persuasion!!
let's talk about the manga, first & foremost. the series is complete, with a run from may 2016 to december 2017, with a total of five volumes — roughly 50 full-length chapters. it also won the manga taisho award in 2019! so it's safe to say that this series is well-acclaimed, and since it's so short it's pretty easy to enjoy it without having to spend a long time reading.
so, with that in mind, here's a brief synopsis of the plot: in the year 2063, a group of teenagers is set to attend a camp on a nearby planet, which is typical for teens at their high school. however, soon after they arrive, they stumble upon a mysterious black orb that sucks them into space thousands of light-years away without any explanation. although they're able to find refuge on a nearby ship, the group must find a way to return to their planet, all the while surviving the unknown.
Tumblr media
that sounds like a really basic story, but in actuality it's not!!! the author does a great job mixing together various genres with lots of plot twists as well as a fun cast of characters. like i said, it's not very long, so unfortunately the characters aren't that well fleshed out, but nonetheless they're still interesting & likable in their own ways! conversely, because the series is so short, a single panel is very telling of their personalities.
Tumblr media
i won't say much about the art except that it is good, because it's space. i am a sucker for space!
Tumblr media
the anime was in the summer 2019 season, produced by studio lerche (known for assassination classroom amongst many other titles). the cast features a variety of prominent voice actors such as hosoya yoshimasa (doppo in bungou stray dogs), minase inori (rem in re:zero), nobunaga shimazaki (haru in free!), uchiyama kouki (tsukishima in haikyuu!!), and saori hayami (shinobu in demon slayer).
Tumblr media
while the anime did a fantastic job bringing the story to life, there were lots of changes apparent from the manga that (though weren't entirely necessary to the plot) made me feel a bit disappointed. that's expected to happen for an entire series adapted in only 12 episodes, especially since it leaned more towards the drama than the humor to flow better, but i think if you watched the anime only, you missed out on some of the subtle details that really heightened the story & just what made astra lost in space such a wild, thought-provoking experience.
there was also this moment of comedy, which as my favorite but definitely got cut out for time LOL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tl;dr astra lost in space is a good sci-fi, thriller, comedy story that deserves more love!! even if you don't want to read the manga, watch the anime! it has amazing art, lovable characters, and an absolutely incredible plot!!! SPACE!!!!!!!

Okay okay just imagine Inuyasha being taken in by the Yourouzuku after his mom dies because he saved one of their own and he’s basically a member of the pack since they love to adopt stray demons (yeah I made that up but whatever). Anyways, so he ends up growing up with them and becomes best friends with Kouga (though he refuses to wear the whole armor fur thing because his robes were from his mother) and life is good. That is, until one day when Kouga, Inuyasha, and a couple others run into trouble on the Eastern mountains and Kouga ends up battling a demon and falling over a cliff with it to what certainly would be his death.
They search, and search, but they can’t find his body and Inuyasha panics because his best friend is dead and everyone is going to abandon him so he flees from the tribe and they can’t find the dog demon either, and this is when Inuyasha runs into Kikyo. He’s grieving the loss of his best friend, someone he’s known since childhood, so loving her is easy in some ways. It eases the pain that he’s feeling about Kouga. Anyways, events end up falling into place as they did in canon (with Inuyasha thinking of using the Shikon Jewel to become human), though this is more because he’s sick of being around demons because they remind him of everything and everyone he’s lost in life (his mother, his father, his friends, Kouga) and Naraku deceives both him and Kikyo and Inuyasha ends up sealed to the tree.
And it turns out that Kouga had indeed survived his fall years before. He fell into a river below and was carried downstream with multiple injuries, but he survived. Ginta and Hakkaku told him about Inuyasha leaving and the trio searched for him with the help of Ayame, but by the time they found him it was too late and Inuyasha had already been sealed to the tree and there was nothing they could do. They grieved the loss of their pack member and would occasionally come back to see if anything had changed, but it hadn’t.
That is, until one day when rumors reach them about a half-demon working with a strange human girl and the Shikon Jewel resurfacing.
When they hear “half-demon” they immediately think of Inuyasha and run to the tree, but he’s gone. There is evidence of a fight nearby, but their friend is gone. Thus begins their search for him, and this leads them straight to Sesshomaru. Yeah, that’s right, Sesshomaru. Specifically, when Sesshomaru is about to kill Inuyasha before entering the tomb. Rather than the Unmother saving Inuyasha from death, Kouga races out and tries to attack Sesshomaru, forcing him to move away and he misses Inuyasha and hits the Unmother instead, and Inuyasha is then grabbed by Ginta and Hakkaku while Ayame stands with Kouga. Kagome of course is incredibly confused, but Sesshomaru still manages to get through the portal with Jakken and this time, Kouga, Ginta, Hakkaku, and Ayame join Kagome and Inuyasha in going to the grave of Inu no Taisho. Sesshomaru is so strong though, they can’t really do anything to hurt him and Ayame protects Kagome from Sesshomaru, taking her on her back and helping her climb out of Inu no Taisho’s bones when the air becomes unbreathable because of Sesshomaru’s poison. At this time, Kouga and Inuyasha are fighting Sesshomaru and losing, though Kouga is able to leap out of the bones with Inuyasha after Ginta and Hakkaku escape. Inuyasha still takes Sesshomaru’s arm off and gains the use of the Tetsuaiga, but now they have four new additions to their group and Inuyasha has a tear-filled reunion with Kouga because he thought his best friend was dead, but in reality this bastard was alive and he had no idea (his words).

So, a friend and I were discussing which anime we think the PTs would like and we came up with: Ren - Kaitou Kid (obviously), Ryuji - literally any shounen series, Ann - Haikyuu (because Shiho) Yusuke - Kimetsu No Yaiba (because Taisho era design and fluid animation, he would be all over that shit), Makoto - She'd have to be talked into watching it, but she loves some JoJo, Futaba - Any mecha series or adaptations of games , Goro - Bungou Stray Dogs, and Kasumi - Yuri On Ice. Any ideas???
HUH interesting question...? Hm. I guess if I were gonna add my one two!! I think Akira would also like Durarara!! and Baccano! :0 lots of be crime do gay in those shows.... And we all know Ryuji watches Naruto lmao. I think Ann would love something like Golden Time or Momote Lollipop! And umm Yusuke I think would be the type to watch the very beautifully animated/experimental anime movies. Mak.... i think she would like something smart.... ACCA: 13 comes to mind..... FUTABA i think she would LOVE DIGIMON and like Sgt. Frog and Osomatsu-san fhsbfbdjdbtf Haru though seems like the type to like Aggrestuko haha maybe she’d relate to her!!! And Goro I think would be into either a) power ranger type super hero justice fun shows or b) things that make you question your existence on this mortal plane. So like Samurai Flamenco on one hand and Paranoia Agent on the other hfndjfnfjdj And last but not least Kasumi....! Honestly probably Sailor Moon or maybe Princess Tutu seems to suit her quite well!! Phew.
