HI THAT WAS ME IM SORRY TUMBLR ATE UR ASK. PERIL IS TRANS I KNOW HER ALSO INTEGRAL TO HER CHARACTER AND IM THE ONLY ONE WHO SEES IT(THATS BASICALLY THE ASK)
HII NO NEED TO BE SORRY TUMBLRS SYSTEM IS ASS!! THANK YOU SM FOR RESENDING THE ASK A <33 OKAY PERIL POST DO-OVER!!
Tumblr media
SPECTRUM USED FROM THIS POST!!!!!!!!!
OKAY SO I JUST DECIDED TO FILL THE WHOLE THING OUT! I headcanon Peril as Intersex and nonbinary!! AND SAME FOR ME, they fall fight between “I know them” and “their lore is literally impacted by their transsexualism”!! Peril is a very Nonbinary character to me, the way she was raised to view things as very “black & white” and hosting a sense of little self autonomy— makes them finding a comfortable identity in a very “”in the middle”” gender compelling! Especially within the understanding of how Peril was raised and brought up in someone else’s vision, being able to find self-identity in that nature of breaking down the “black & white” structure that was forced on them through the act of finding identity in neutrality. I find the development of self-love extended through gender expression in that nature something that works well in-unison with Peril’s pre-existing themes! Especially in regards to the layered metaphors of the Necklace. As a nonbinary person myself - I found that to be a pinnacle moment of forced suppression of identity into something more “palatable” to the public perception - in this analysis that being the forcing of femininity onto a gnc aligning identity - speaking to the way many nonbinary identity’s are expected to lean “one direction or the other”. So that moment being involved in Perils story - and her breaking free of it and having a self-realization/control moment - very reflective of nonbinary/gender non conforming experiences !!
With that though - thats just my own interpretation and connection to those aspects of Peril’s characterization! I find her lore and themes within her character to speak to many universal experiences of identity that can be interpreted in a fluid way. Like I personally read it as a very compelling arc about non-conformity and applied my own experiences with gender expression onto it, but other interpretations/analyses are just as strong! Thats why I put this headcanon in the middle, because I find it connects heavily to their lore, but is similarly just an extension of it and not necessarily interwoven in-full. Its a lot of personal interpretation which is why the personable “I know them” also 100% fits my perception of transgenderism onto Peril <33
Also the Intersex headcanon is purely a me thing, I always thought Peril was intersex just like. Factually lmao (one of those “I somehow convinced myself this was canon and was surprised to learn it was not” moments lmao). The reason I included it as well is because within my headcanon I think Peril would similarly absorb her being intersex to a further extension of gender identity! Again, breaking down those “black & white” views that were forced on them through themself - literally! Notably being intersex does not inherently mean gender identity is going to be impacted as well, just for this headcanon I feel Peril’s relationship to their gender identity would be strongly impacted by them being intersex <3 !!
OKAY SORRY THIS GOT LONG BUT THIS WAS FUN TO WRITE! TWICE ! LMAO! I have lots of thoughts on these guys so feel free to ask any questions about the other characters if ya want!!! I have many thoughts lmao…
Also I love analyzing these dragons so if anyone has a different interpretation of the characters & wanna share PLEASE DO!!!! I love hearing other perspectives, especially if they contrast my own interpretations, it’s all so cool!!!! <333

I've said this before but genuinely working with kids who love WOF for a solid 80% of my week for the past year/year and a half is what's actually killed my interest in WOF (tho I'm still here, obviously, and the ttrpg isn't going anywhere). Like,,,, idk man they have stickers on their water bottles of their fave guys and I think it's just made me detach a lot more from the rewriting I do bc as long as kids are having fun with it I kind of settle into a neutral tolerance instead of the like writing mania that this blog has operated on for the past,,,,,, jesus, it's been 8 years.

this memes popular in another fandom im in so went ahead and did it with WoF. Explanations + separate art below the cut! (click for better quality!)
Lynxfall (box 1 and the entire bottom row) - Im a total sucker for bubbly, energetic person + uptight, snooty person whos touch starved. If u know me u know all my fav ships follow this dynamic. I just adored them from the moment I read book 14. My favorite wof ship, and actually my two fave characters lol
Winturtle (box 2 and 5) - not sure why I like these two, but I do! I'm not super big on them, but I like em. Not sure if they count as a rarepair either Qinter (box 3) - oh boy I know I'm gonna just get murdered for this but I just. Don't really like Qinter as much. I mean I used too, but the amount of bitching the fans do really just put me off on the ship. I know not everyone is like this but I am just so tired with everything having to be about Qinter. Nothing wrong with it but I don't want to hear more about Qinter.
Anemarin (box 4) - self explanatory, love the sort of puppy dog love Anenome has toward tamarin.
Moonjou (box 6) - no idea if they r controversial but I do see a lot of arguing. I'm not super into this one either, but I think its cute.
Now for the arts, all done by me. designs were done by me too.

ultimate ship confession lets go (well not really but here's what i think):
cleril: isn't in a great place right now, but it has potential to be good. i like them a little more platonically. people need to stop ignoring peril's character development omg.
glorybringer: i'm too tired to care at this point. this has been debated to death.
blacier: it's kind of cute (well, the fandom version is; canon is more toxic and that's less of my thing. good for you if you like that though). no strong opinions.
jamapple: POSSIBLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHIPS 💖💖💖💖 they got their spotlight in OND BOOK and that's all they needed to win me over. the flashback to them snuggling in the hammock????? MY HEARTTTTT 💕💕💕💕💞
mastermind x chameleon: i have seen this shipped maybe twice. and i can't get it out of my head. it's just so interesting to me.
winter x kinkajou: wait...... maybe? a part of me thinks they could be cute, but most of me says pass.
ripnami: somewhat has potential; is currently very boring and questionable. i'm not against tsunami having a love interest, but i'm loosing faith in riptide. riptide i KNOW you can become interesting please do literally anything before you bore me to death.
lunatail: they're adorable together!!! obsessed with them omg. people need to talk about them more (for my sake).
clearsight x sunstreak: no opinions; seems fine. i feel like most of the people who hate this ship hate it because they wanted clearsight and darkstalker to get together. which. 🤨
moonbli: it's just okay. a little cute, slightly bland. could get better as they develop their relationship.
quinter: i normally love these types of dynamics, but i'm not interested in quinter? no idea why. i guess like them more platonically.
sunnyflight: uhhh no. don't like this one. i think sunny kindly shutting starflight down and him being okay with that is very refreshing.
whiteout x thoughtful: i feel like people forget about them a lot..... and i can see why. i really think it's cute how they're both artists, but they just don't have much momentum.
glacier x boa: i find this one is more compelling than blacier. glacier crying when she heard boa's backstory... girl me too.
smolder x thorn: i started to appreciate this one so much more when i read smolder's section in the guidebook. that man was a sopping wet disaster. hope they're happy together. i really like them.
sunnyspeaker: seems very cute! no strong opinions. i'd feel a little bad for starflight lmao.
mangrove x orchid: 💖💖💖💖💖💖 I LOVE THEM AND I NEED TO KNOW HOW THEY'RE DOING.
anemone x tamarin: anemone SERIOUSLY needs a good influence, so i think tamarin would be good for her. i'm very curious and i want to see their relationship develop.
winterwatcher: ehhhhhh. i can see the vision, but the vision isn't for me.
scarlet x burn: no. love LOOSES 🔥🔥🔥 the only love for burn is BLOODSHED.
starspeaker: it's cute. that's it. idk. i used to not like them together, but now i think they're fine.
sunlow: 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 THEMMMM!!!! the flashback to their first meeting had me giggling and kicking my feet.
darksight: no. their relationship was very interesting and complex and well written, but from a shipping standpoint??? no way in HELL.
kinkajou x moon: it's cute! no strong opinions. stuck between whether i would like them more as friends or lovers.
clearsight x listener: fun to entertain, but i like them better as friends. if clearsight stayed on pyrrhia, listener would've turned her into a wine mom and they would gossip.
lynxfall: no strong opinions. they're both gay as hell and seem right for each other, but i'm just not really interested. again, no idea why.
anemone x pike: i DO like the bodyguard trope... but anemone x tamarin has more potential in my eyes.
blicket: kind of a guilty pleasure for me....... YES it was rushed but they're really cute this each other. luna imagining that wedding tapestry of them...... melting my heart.
umber x qibli: sounds cute. i like the idea of umber crushing on qibli and then finding someone else though.
turtlejou: meh. has a little potential, but is mostly boring to me. i appreciate how kinkajou was honest with turtle about her feelings at the end.
blister x morrowseer: idk. if they were married i think they would try to poison kill each other 24/7.
carnelian x moon: ehhhh, not for me. i don't like it that much. maybe because carnelian is kind of an eh character to me (SORRYYY i know a lot of you guys are carnelian girlies).
fathom x indigo: glad they got a happy ending. wish we got to see them interact a liiiiiiiiitle more, but i like them.
pertle: no. they're besties and you can't change my mind.
snowfall x sky: thought about this one for a while...... but..... ehhhhhhhhhhhhh...... no.
coral x blister: no.
jambringer: again, very fun to entertain; i can see the vision. but i can't abandon the jamapple ship 😤
arcticslayer: probably one of the most realistic relationships in the book. very conflicted about them. i think they were more attracted to the ideas of each other. maybe.
ok i KNOW there's more ships but i'm cutting it off here because this is getting long. also i haven't read the winglets so idk what's going on over there.
if you're hurt by my opinions and want to rage over them, you're a baby. ship whatever you want (so long as it's not really really weird); i do NOT care.

Bestiaryposting Results: Mlekragg
Unsurprisingly, multiple people read the entry and immediately clocked what this was. (Thank you for not actually making a guess in text, so that people who don't recognize it are able to work without that preconception.) I didn't want to leave it out, because the mythological ones are fun, but unlike some of the others, the modern conception of this beast is pretty much exactly what the bestiary says.
Anyway, as always, if you don't know what I'm talking about, you can find an explanation for this whole thing at https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting. If you want to join in, the new entry for each week is tagged with "maniculum bestiaryposting" so it should be findable. This week's entry can be reviewed here:
Below the cut you will find the drawings responding to it, in roughly chronological order:
Tumblr media
@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) decided to branch out in an unusual direction with this one, in order to avoid drawing the creature they'd identified from the entry and also have some fun with it. I just think this is some quality creature design. Love the mask-thing, love the springy tail, and that's a really good rendering of a cuttlefish face IMHO. There's a really interesting explanation for all of these features, what inspired them and how it all works together, in the linked post, which you should go read.
Tumblr media
@moonygryffin (link to post here) took a more direct approach, with the twist that the creature here is modeled on American fauna rather than ones the medieval Europeans would have been aware of. The body is a mountain lion, and the man-like head is a golden-headed lion tamarin, which of course comes with its own mane. I enjoy the choice to not use a lion lion, but rather two animals with "lion" in their name; also I've always thought lion tamarins were very cool-looking. For more details -- and an example of an attempt by MoonyGryffin to draw the same creature several years ago -- see the linked post. (Also thank you for providing alt text.)
Tumblr media
@sweetlyfez (link to post here) has made an attempt to take the entry literally without drawing the creature she has recognized, which is a challenge considering how specific the description is. I think the decision to give it flea legs to help with that exceptional jumping is clever. SweetlyFez describes the result as an "awful creature" and... honestly I can't argue, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one of these. In fact I think I'm going to wrap up this commentary and scroll down so I don't keep making eye contact with it.
Tumblr media
@pomrania has also decided to go the route of "let's get weird with it", and avoided the literal interpretation by re-analyzing the word "has". This is similar to that style of joke one hears now and then -- you know, "he has the heart of a poet... he keeps it in a jar at home." (Incidentally, props to Mary Shelley for being perhaps the only person who could make that claim and not be kidding.) So this creature has the face of a man and the body of a lion, not in the sense that it was born with them, but in the sense that it keeps them as possessions. Very clever, and the underlying creature design is also fantastically creepy in my opinion.
Tumblr media
@coolest-capybara (link to post here) mentions that she didn't recognize the description, and has given us this really cool-looking, rather menacing creature in their excellent medieval style. (This is why I insist on not naming the beasts even when it seems clear what it is -- this amazing piece of art might have looked entirely different if someone posted a spoiler.) I'm really struck by how it simultaneously looks like a patchwork sort of creature (different front & back legs, etc.) but all flows together into a cohesive whole. Just really well done, I think. (Also, thank you for including alt text.)
Tumblr media
@cheapsweets (link to post here) has drawn the creature mid-leap, showing off its jumping prowess by shooting straight up into the air. I think this drawing does a very good job at combining human and lion anatomy to make something unsettling -- and the inclusion of the skull diagram up in the top left points to the amount of thought that went into this. As always, please check out the linked post for a detailed discussion of the design. (Also, thank you for including alt text.)
Tumblr media
@strixcattus (link to post here) has drawn one that's oddly cute, and looks a bit worried. However, according to the description they've written in the linked post, this reaction on my part is probably going to get me killed, because apparently they're still quite vicious. I like it, though -- and, as always, I urge you to go read the linked post for this one.
On to the Aberdeen Bestiary... oh, we can't, actually. This is another missing page. So here's the illustration from the Ashmole Bestiary instead:
Tumblr media
So, first of all, this is indeed the manticore, and I'm sure most if not all of the people who said they had guessed it got that correct.
Second, we can also note that all the artists who said something along the lines of "well we know about the issues of drawing medieval scorpions, so the scorpion-tail description doesn't need to be literal" were also correct there. Apparently this time a scorpion tail is just spiky all over, which I have to admit does look kinda cool.
Now let's address the elephant in the room. WHAT is that thing on its HEAD? My best guess is that it's meant to be a crown -- medieval art often sticks hats on nonhuman creatures with human faces, almost as if the artist wants to make sure you know it looks like a human head on purpose. I don't see crowns that often, though; usually it's just a cloth hat. (The one in Bodley MS 764, where I got the text for this entry, is clearly wearing a Phrygian cap.) I find myself unable to see it as anything but a daring hairstyle that is absolutely not working for it, though.
Anyway. The manticore is an odd one in its continuity here -- a lot of the mythical creatures in the bestiary have been changed, reinterpreted, or forgotten in the intervening centuries. I think maybe the manticore happens to have hit that sweet spot where it's popular enough that people remember it, but not so popular that it gets excessively telephoned through widespread transmission. I think a couple people noted that the Standard Fantasy manticore is more or less spot on to this description, and indeed, I can only think of one change:
Tumblr media
(Art from the Magic: the Gathering card "Crimson Manticore", artist Daniel Gelon)
At some point, those bastards got wings. It's not universal at this time, but if you do an image search for "manticore", the majority of the modern ones are winged. I'm not really sure where that came from.
(Side note: I tested this by doing a Google image search, and one of the top results was a particularly odd-looking image, so I clicked on it out of curiosity. It was at the top of an... article? on a webpage I'd never heard of, and the opening of said article included the sentence, "In medieval bestiaries and art, the manticore was depicted with unique features such as paws, teeth, and fur." You don't say there, bud.)
Interestingly, the D&D manticore is slightly different from the description in an additional way.
Tumblr media
Instead of a scorpion tail, it has a tail covered in spines. This has apparently been part of the D&D manticore since the beginning -- the above image is from 2e, but the 1e version had the same tail. (I just didn't use it because it's not as clear in the picture.)
Now, scroll back up to that Ashmole Bestiary image. The one where the tail doesn't really look anything like a scorpion's. Looks... similar to this in broad concept.
I doubt that Gygax or Arneson or whoever designed that aspect of their manticore after one bestiary image, so I popped over to bestiary.ca to see what else was out there. Out of the 38 medieval manticore images collected on that website, there are only two with a tail covered in spikes: the Ashmole manticore and one other that's clearly just a less-skilled artist working from the same image (it also has the same hat). Looking at the text sources, though:
"...it has a tail like a land scorpion, in which there is a sting; it darts forth the spines with which it is covered instead of hair..." -- Aristotle, De animalibus
"To the end of its tail is attached the sting of a scorpion, and this might be over a cubit in length; and the tail has stings at intervals on either side." -- Aelianus, On the Characteristics of Animals
Okay, that's the D&D version, mystery solved. New question: is it a coincidence that the Ashmole illustration fits Aelianus's description? Remember, the page is missing from the Aberdeen bestiary and the Ashmole bestiary isn't translated. The text comes from Bodley MS 764, which does not have a spiky-tailed manticore. My Latin is terrible and I'm untrained in palaeography, so I can't tell whether the entry there preserves the spiky description.
If any palaeographers out there want to solve this one for me, it's Bodleian MS Ashmole 1511, f.22v-23r, available digitally here. (I'll put some screenshots below, but I expect it's easier to zoom properly on the library's digitized manuscript.)

Okay, that's all I've got. Enjoy your week everyone.

Alright gamers! I've collected a list of notes that my friends were able to pick up on while reading the leaked guide. It's a bit disjointed and hard since it's quite difficult to read, but here we go. Under the cut is a bulletpoint list of it all.
This is the video I'm talking about, by the way.
And a quite couple of notes:
This isn't the full thing. Several pages were skipped during it. Some sections cut-off abruptly because of that
Some things simply aren't readable (at least to those I've worked with and myself) because of the motion blur from the pages turning and the slightly low quality
I'll leave out a bit of stuff from the stories that aren't terribly relevant (like what happens in them) as I don't really consider them lore. Only bits and pieces from them that are relevant I'll include
With that being said, let us begin with the lore dump.
MudWings chose their own names
MudWings have adobe buildings
MudWings have royal balls
Burn threatened Coral to try and get her into joining her side, but Coral refused
Burn pretty much tried intimidating all of the tribes into siding with her via blackmail
Blaze tried to get Coral on her side and the letter was so disjointed that "she could barely write or string a sentence together"
^ "It was abundantly likely that she had never read a single one of Coral's bestselling scrolls"
Blister bribed Coral into joining her side by promising the treasure that she stolen from the SandWing treasury before she left
Blister memorized all of Coral's scrolls so that Coral would like her more
After the burning of the Summer Palace, the SeaWings refused to speak to Blister because it was only then that Coral realized that Blister was fishy with the death of Kestrel and also manipulating her the whole time
There is a letter from Anemone to Tamarin that's basically a love confession plus a vent dump
^ Anemone tells Tamarin about how she was incredibly isolated her whole life and had no social life due to her mother and status as a princess and animus. She had never seen another dragon that wasn't a SeaWing (except Blister) until the DoD came. She writes about how she wishes that there was a town like Possibility built near the borders of the Sea Kingdom so that the MudWings, RainWings, and SeaWings could all mingle about. She also talks about her insecurities over being a ruler and wishes that Auklet will be the one to step up and claim the throne. Anemone writes about how she feels intense guilt for attempting to kill her family and says that Auklet hasn't done anything like that, thus would be a better queen
^ Anemone wanted to gift Tamarin a pearl but Kinkajou didn't allow for it because she suspected it was enchanted
The Rainforest Kingdom has "strange geological formations" that can be dangerous
Dragonbite vipers have an evolutionary cousin called Lanceheads, which live in the rain forest
Glory theorizes that the reason why the screaming monkeys from THK adapted to scream like that was because it was done by the NightWings so that they would lose sleep, resulting in an easier takeover
RainWing knowledge was limited for ages because of how some outsiders would go in and never return, which is why RainWing venom was unknown
RainWing assassins are real
^ RainWing assassins were known to hunt during the day while NightWing assassins worked during the night
Queen Anaconda's grandmother outlawed the use of venom on dragons due to its lethal nature and later tried to disband her army because of a peace treaty she signed between the RainWings, MudWings, and SkyWings
^ Because of no war, the RainWings become more laid-back and this is why they're like the way they are in the modern day
There is a story about a NightWing named Comet who was hatched under "a" comet (no particular comet specified) and with no full moons. He was supposed to be powerless, yet he had a vision. The story cuts-off there
There's a part with a couple pieces of SandWing treasure
^Desert Tiara: This tiara, worn by queens for centuries, is [???] from silver into spikes resembling cactus spines, and embedded with crystals to represent the precious [???] of the sandwing kingdom
^The Twilight Necklace: This necklace is a long, thin, coiled chain made of a [???] black metal, possibly of NightWing origin. Care should also be taken when [???] [???]"
^The SandWing Scepter: The scepter is a staff of oak wood, plated with [???] gold, and inlaid with onyx and pearls. Records suggest the scepter is possibly [???] [???] and [???] animus-touched, but care should be used when handling the scepter [???] [???] [???]"
^Assorted Gems and Coins: Likely in [???] stamped with Queen Oasis' symbol
Smolder keeps Rose on a leash via a bracelet he got for her and has her in a cage when she's not being good or it's night time
IceWings do not use scrolls to preserve stories, instead using "bards", which are storytellers. They are chosen from birth
^ There is a story about a bard named Caribou in the book who's from The-Village-Of-The-Plentiful-Seals, a village near the gift of sustenance, which are three lakes where if a dragon sticks their claws into the water they'll always catch a seal
Nearly every generation in each family has someone named Caribou to honor an animus whose name was Caribou
Icewings have a yearly feast where they go to The-Village-Of-The-Plentiful-Seals where they eat, sing, tell stories, and dance for five days and five nights
The aurora borealis is said to be the Great Ice Dragon's frostbreath
There are Great Ice Dragon temples that feed the poor and hungry for free
Where-No-Dragon-Goes-Hungry is another village and has a MASSIVE statue of Caribou carved out of whale bone
Where-No-Dragon-Goes-Hungry also does a yearly competition on who can make the best caribou sculpture
We-Venerate-and-Remember-Caribou also has a market that stays open all year and holds the Great ice Dragon temples
Noble IceWings despised the gift of sustenance due to believing that it was a easy way of getting food, saying that it only are lazy and that they should work for their food and be useful to the tribe
Canyon was the name of the Skywing King who married Scarlet. He was like Scarlet, but a man. Obsessed with his appearance and a bit egotistical
Skywings have marriage rituals where the two lovers will fly up in the clouds and say wedding vows or something. They do this alone, there are no wedding guests or anything like that
^ This changed when Scarlet became queen, and she threw lavish parties for marriages, but people didn't really like that (because Scarlet would also have gladiator fights as part of the "party") so most dragons would either do the wedding ritual in secret or would just not marry
SilkWing schools take their dragonets to their hive's misbehavior way twice a year to terrify the young dragonets into obedience
^ "Do HiveWing dragonets get traumatized this way? Nope."
Here are some rules that are listed that SilkWings must follow:
"SilkWings are assigned professions suited to their limited set of skills as a tribe and begin work as soon as they have wings."
"SilkWing partnerships (marriages) are designated by Queen Wasp and her sisters, and are binding unless the queen chooses to sever them."
"To preserve the dignity and unity of our two tribes, personal relationships between HiveWings and SilkWings are not tolerated."
"No trees are allowed in the Hives, neither planted in your terrariums or gardens, nor portrayed in our art, in solemn commemoration of all the lives lost during the tree wars."
"To ensure their safe transit throughout the Hives, all SilkWings must wear bracelets designating their school or place of work at all times. Travel between hives must be cleared with supervisors and local HiveWing authorities."
"All dragons must refrain from stealing or destroying property"
"Each SilkWing metamorphosis must take place within the cocoon."
SilkWing dragonets are taught only by HiveWings, and are told that all HiveWings learn what SilkWings learn at a much much younger age in order to keep SilkWings feeling inferior
Silkwings who are especially good at something, or just quick with their work, are often assigned tasks that are much harder for them. "Troublemakers" are always given the hardest jobs. Io theorizes this is to keep SilkWings too busy and too tired to wish for a better future
Yellowjacket Hive is the "manufacturing" hive and has factories and stuff. They produce glasses, lamps, and book printers. They also have a university that specializes in engineering
Hornet Hive is the economy hive, where shops are everywhere, everyone is in accounting, and has a university for commerce, and apparently there are companies or something because Hornet Hive is where people manage their employees which are scattered throughout the continent
Vinegaroon Hive specialized in ecology, and has a bunch of cool fish in a lake (they get eaten). Dragons from Vinegaroon Hive are usually the ones to lead research expeditions? They also host hunting trips
Mantis Hive is still just "The College Place" where they teach HiveWings to become professors for the other colleges in other hives. They also focus on innovation, and part of the hive collapsed a while ago which is theorized to be from an industrial experiment
Tsetse Hive specializes in doctor stuff and healing and stuff. They probably have a med school. It is now basically confirmed that Tsetse Hive has a prison where anyone over the age of 50 is sent. since Wasp cant control elderly dragons
LeafWings don't have very much
There's some letters from Sequoia to someone named Linden, and then Belladona takes over and sends a letter to Sequoia about how her letters are no longer welcome but most of the words are too blurry to make out. I think this part is just about how the PoisonWings and SapWings used to have friendlier relations, but Belladonna changed this when she took over

Ok, I got the Guide to the Dragon World and I'm gonna talk about it in full now.
Spoilers if you haven't read the book.
I feel about it the guide the same way everyone else does. Either I or the advertisements and delays hyped up the book too much, and I was expecting more in depth stuff, but the guide in itself is a 10/10.
I like the prolong, as it talks about how dragons lump the tribes into stereotypes and this book is a way to stop that, with stories from all the other tribes. I do wish the annotations from the other dragonets of destiny were more frequent.
The scorching story was fine, but would have been more impactful it we didn't already know the more detailed story.
Pyrrhia:
The maps are cool, very detailed, kind of wish it labeled the old Seawing Island palace, considering it labeled the old Nightwing palace.
Mudwings:
The Mudwing chapter is the most well done, with a story of the stereotypes of the Mudwings and then a note of the true life of the Mudwings, followed by two stories about things we heard about in the books, like the Mudwing Succsession crisis and how they found out about the blood red eggs being fireproof.
The Mudwing Succession story also tells us some extra things about mudwing life: Most Mudwing villages have a school and they have a naming ceremony to name themselves after they are old enough to know about Mudwing life.
Sepia's scroll does show one thing: we actually know a fair bit about Mudwing life, about as much as the Skywings or Sandwings, the problem is we don't spend any time with the Mudwings or their kingdom. Like we didn't know how they named themselves, but we also don't know about the Sandwing full moon festival or Skywing schooling, things that probably wouldn't come up outside of a guide like this.
Seawings:
Queen Coral still sucks. We do find out that Coral allied with Blister because Blister gave the Seawings treasure and battle plans and, most importantly, read and memorized all of Queen Coral's scrolls and said she loved them. Apperently Queen Coral is trying to tell everyone that the Seawings had a big hand in ending the war and were a part of the dragonet's plan.
Moray tells Queen Coral that Starflight might want some Seawing history written by someone other then Coral. I like how in this and Talons of Power, Moray doesn't just worship the grown Coral walks on, but actually disagrees with her sometimes and tries to tell her no.
Queen Coral tells us about some of her scrolls. Some we heard of, some we haven't, they were cool.
We also get some letters between Albatross and Queen Lagoon, they don't really tell us much we didn't know about.
We then get a scroll about learning the beginnings of Aquatic. It was alright, I don't really care about the Seawings all that much, but it was cool.
Turtle was assigned to write about Seawing customs, but he turned it in too late and had to send in a letter from his brother instead. That was rather annoying to me, "oh no we can't learn the full details about Seawing culture for some reason, lets just learn about hatching day events."
Anemone tells Tamarin about how she misses her and the Seawings main weakness is not being able to communicate with other dragons as well. Also we have blind scrolls now!
I don't really care about the Seawings that much, they're probably my least favorite Pyrrhian tribe.
Rainwings:
The Rainwing chapter starts with a story from Kinkajou about Silver, Glory's pet sloth, and how Silver met Glory and helped her. Silver is clearly a stand in for Kinkajou, it also has parentheses around notations of her talking to Moon about how to write a story, and isn't technically very well written. I really like the story. I'm not really someone who wants a new story with Kinkajou in the lead, but it was fun.
We then read the "Dangers of the Rainforest" scroll, with a few annotations from Glory about how the Rainforest isn't so dangerous and the Rainwings can be dangerous if they wanted to. I like how the scroll is one mentioned in the series, specifically The Hidden Kingdom, and is accurate to the description, it barely mentioned the Rainwings themselves.
Handsome tells Glory about the story of the Royal Rainwing Challenges and how they started. The Rainwings used to fight for the throne in the death matches that every other Pyrrhian tribe did, and then they went through eight queens in a month, and the ninth queen said we should stop the death fights, as if we kill all the strongest, smartest Rainwings, we won't have any smart, strong Rainwings left, so they devised different, non deadly challenges. We learn about a few more: The storytelling challenge, the cooking challenge, and the sloth taming challenge.
Jambu then tells us about different colors on Rainwings and what they mean. It also notes the usefulness of this, as if you are in trouble or if you feel bad, your friends will know and can help.
We then learn about how the Rainwings didn't know how to read and write for a while, but they did tell oral stories, either about history or just new, made up stories, and how Starflight realized how creative and deep the Rainwings could be.
However, in the past, the Rainwings could read and interacted with other dragons and got into wars, and then we read the letter about what happened to the Rainwings.
The letter is Python, the great-aunt of the current Rainwing queen, Queen Jacaranda, the granddaughter of Queen Anaconda, the Rainwing queen in Darkstalker's time. Python is upset that Jacaranda is abiding by the peace treaties and dismantling the army and saying that venom can no longer be used on other dragons. The Skywings took a lot of rainforest and killed about half the Rainwings, although Python says that they Anaconda would have fought even if she was the last Rainwing left. This does explain why the Rainwings are pacifists, but doesn't explain why they stopped reading or interacting with other tribes, I guess that was the fault of the queens Grandeur let on the throne, but everyone talks like the Rainwings fell apart a long time ago.
I do like how the Rainwings are written in this book compared to the Hidden Kingdom. The Hidden Kingdom has a problem of saying the Rainwings are bad for things that aren't bad at all, like not having a Rainwing palace, or Suntime, or not eating meat. Hidden Kingdom may have been trying to say at the end that the Rainwings are fine, they just need to still fight if nessesary, but I did not find it very clear.
The guide book tells us that the Rainwing traditions make sense actually, and even thought they can't read, they can still tell stories.
It also seems like the story of how the Rainwings changed was a bit retconned. In the third book, Grandeur said that they used to keep track of the royal eggs, but her daughters were useless, so they opened the throne to everyone, but then the only ones who signed up were bad queens. Earlier Grandeur said that in her day, the Rainwings used camoflauge to hid from tribes who wanted to take their rainforest and she wouldn't mind using her venom on the Nightwings, so I think the original plan was that the Rainwings fell apart with Grandeur, but then it was changed to show how the Rainwings aren't bad, just different.
Nightwings:
I enjoyed Tales of the Nightwings, but it is different from how the novels describe it. We didn't know much about it to be fair; it was Starflight's favorite scroll, it mentioned some stuff about Nightwing schools, and we found out it was all untrue after finding out Nightwings couldn't really read minds or see the future, at the time. This made it sound like it was a scroll about the fake life of the Nightwings, but instead it was a story about a Nightwing who didn't have any powers, got bullied, and then had a vision that saved everyone. This would be fine, but then the comment about none of it being true doesn't make sense. I get that they were talking about the powers in general, but its not written as a true story. I would have liked it more if it was a bunch of supposedly true stories about Nightwing life.
Moon tells Starflight how Nightwing powers work, we know all of it so I'm not gonna go over it.
Glory and Deathbringer talk to Mastermind about why Nightwings think the way they do.
Apparently some of the Rainwings are ready to forgive the Nightwings immediately, I hope these are the ones who weren't imprisoned because otherwise, why. At least he knows he did bad. Mastermind is kind of like Darkstalker in my eyes, a dragon who is bad and did bad things, but because he has a character outside of evil, some people don't think he's bad.
Nightwings are taught from birth that they are the best dragons genetically and because of their powers. Mastermind also seem surprised that the other tribes don't think that way about their tribes, at least not to that extent.
They didn't just ask the Rainwings for help because they knew almost nothing about them, and when they found out about Rainwing venom, they assumed the Rainwings were dangerous and were also afraid to show weakness, since they talked about how strong they were. It's interesting that in both this and Prisoners, most Nightwing take the Rainwings seriously, which makes me think that the Nightwings told everyone Rainwings were lazy to keep everyone away from the Rainwings.
The good of the Nightwings is their love of learning, and how they were the first tribe to develop a written language, and take medicine seriously, and they used to help the other tribes with their visions.
We then get a note from Fierceteeth about the new Nightwing colony, Renewal, for the purposes of starting their own tribe with their own queen instead of merging with the Rainwings.
Fierceteeth seems to try to make herself tougher then she is, talking about how hard it is to live here instead of the Rainforest, as if bragging, and how she says she doesn't care about Nightwing history, but the island was cool. The Nightwings have also become nocternal, waking up late in the day and hunting through the night and then goingg to sleep shortly after sunrise.
Fierceteeth is also interested in the theater, as no one on the island was ever taught anything artistic, just "science, superiority, and survival," which is interesting, the Nightwings are trying to put on a play, and Fierceteeth says she'll send Starflight some tickets if it works.
Also Fierceteeth has eggs, and she says Starflight is invited since he's the only family Fierceteeth has left. She seems excited about said eggs, which is not something I expected of her character. I think it cute and she seems to care about her brother more then she lets on. Also we learn the Skywings have big hatching day parties, probably courtecy of Queen Scarlet.
We then get a scroll from Renewal about Queen Vigilance's glass jubilee. Vigilance brought back the Full moon festival and has musicians play during it. The festival celebrates the gifts of the tribe. Each seer offers a future vision, and the mind readers share the thoughts of adoration to the queen. Queen Vigilance also made an island temple to the first nightwing librarians, and hopes to have the glass jubilee continue.
We can see that in the past, the Nightwings still though of themselves as the superior tribe, both in arts and science. I also like the inclusion of the island temple, no one seems to talk about the Nightwing temple in the discussion of religion. Also I like how this is clearly propaganda, I bet Vigilance's children are bad at playing and no one was thinking of her.
Sandwings:
Yeah, I'm with everyone else on the Sandwing chapter, it's the worst out of the book. It doesn't tell us anything about Sandwing life and culture.
We get a flyer asking if anyone knows about the missing treasure, the Desert Tiara, the Twilight necklace, the Sandwing Septer, and some assorted gold coins with Queen Oasis's face on them.
Then we see a letter from Sunny about Burn's creepy hall, the hall contained the white dragon with no wings that was said to be a Icewing Sandwing hybrid, but Sunny doesn't think so. She doesn't think their a Silkwing, because they only have two wingbuds, so either they're from a non heard of tribe, or an animus enchanted dragon. This is interesting, because I thought the white dragon was a Silkwing until graphic novel 5, when they just looked like a Icewing with no wings.
She also has a dragon bite viper skin, a fish tank full of odd looking fish, a blood red Mudwing egg she planed on destroying on the brightest night, but it never hatched, a Silkwing wing, and the Stuffed Nightwing, who bragged about having an animus object, the dreamvisitor, and wouldn't give it to Burn, so she had him killed, but she could never find the dreamvisitor because they swallowed it.
We did learn about some new treasure and more about the "hybrid" and the wing and how the Nightwing got here and about some more stuff in Burns collection, so there's that.
We then get Smolder's diary, from the first week after the death of Queen Oasis and how he raised Flower. This is my main problem with the chapter, the big story doesn't tell us anything new about the Sandwings. The Mudwing sucession scroll told us about Mudwing schools and how they get their names and royal life. The Skywing scroll of Queen Scarlet's husband told use about Skywing families and Queen Firestorm, but we don't get anything in Smolder's story we didn't already know. If we did, I would be more lenient to this chapter, but it doesn't
Tell us about the Full Moon festival, or the Sandwing animus gifts, or how Jerboa III met Queen Glacier or something. Burn's weirdling tower was a cool idea, but it's not enough.

Things I've Found From The "Guide to A Dragon World" Scholastic Teaser:
A Seawing Scroll by Coral called "How The Seawings Ended The Great War and Saved The World!"
A letter from Anemone to Tamarin talking about her personal opinions on the Seawings approach to intertribal relations and her own fears and thoughts on becoming Queen. She also mentions dreaming of a town like Possibility but it's built on the SeaMudRain border. She signs the letter off with "Love, Anemone"
Not much is known of the Rainforest. Knowledge on Flora and fauna is extremely limited since the Rainwings are an isolated tribe
There is a letter from a Rainwing named Python during Anaconda's rule. The letter talks about how the Rainwings are falling from grace and power
Rainwings were amazing assassins during Anaconda's rule.
Queen Vigilance was a scholar and created the island temple dedicated to the first librarians of the Nightwing tribe

Quinter and Anemorin thoughts?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I’m gonna talk about Quinter first, since they are the first board here on the left! So I’m not too big of a fan of it myself but I can definitely see the vision here, if I’m being honest I just don’t really like Winter in general so lol. I think Winter brings it down a lot and I think Qibli deserves a better boyfriend. Although I definitely respect it.
Anemorin is a tough one for me because 1. I headcanon Tamarin as an Aromantic Lesbian ( Aaron don’t headcanon every character ever as aro, ace or aroace challenge lol, although I can see Tamarin with a QPR I doubt she would be interested in Anemone. ) and 2. It’s always read to me as INCREDIBLY one sided, very cute and very sad for Anemone, but also a tiny bit funny. I think it’s better for Anemone’s arc if she doesn’t always get what she wants in the beginning, and then finds someone who she wouldn’t initially have a crush on and then falls for after their interest in her! But that’s just me… I can definitely see Tamarin and Anemone being friends later on and laughing about how Anemone had a crush on her.
