This is a stupidly niche crossover

Making a list of Mendoza-Tao connections cause I’m convinced they’re the same person. They have too many similarities

- both are super smart, they like science

- both come up with inventions /plans to help the team

- both kinda leaders at some point

- both kidnapped Zia at some point

- Both commit arson

- Both are tortured as blackmail for the main characters

- Both have their own silly sidekicks (Pichu and Pedro and sancho)

- They both have similar coping mechanisms

- They both gave a flower to the girl they liked

- They both met their girl in Patala

- Both are part of trios but are kinda the “outsiders” of their trio (Tao is in the kid trio, but he’s not a chosen one vs Mendoza is part of the sailor trio but is obviously extremely different from Pedro and sancho)

- Are not part of any duos either

- So in China, Pedro accidentally gets catapulted by bamboo stalks, for like, comedic purposes. Later on, Tao gets inspired by that event to build a catapult. But Mendoza also gets inspired by the event and uses the flexibility of the bamboo stalks to smack a guy during a fight

- That one scene in season 1 where they’re in the Amazon kingdom and they say to the sorceress “ok we bet that your prediction will be wrong and there’ll be NO tempest tomorrow”. And then while in their room, Pedro and sancho are like. Mendoza aren’t you gonna do something. And he’s like “nope” then goes to sleep. And then Esteban says to Zia “i have full confidence in Tao’s plan!” Then the screen cuts to Tao sleeping. Yeah…

• They both very smart and passionate about science + They love to teach other people about it

• they're curious

• they deal with trauma in similar ways, which is why Tao is the only person able to see through Mendoza's exterior

• Tao also understands that Mendoza is trying to use them + has bad intentions

• Mendoza appreciates Tao's intellect not only because he's useful to him

• Mendoza associates himself to Tao because when he figures out that they've been walking in circles, he specifically calls out Tao and asks him if he's noticed it too. Meaning out of all the people in the team, Mendoza figures tao is the only one he can talk to about more complicated things. Which is a good thing cause when he tries to talk about navigation to Esteban and Zia, they don't really get it

• and above all they extremely loyal and would die for their friends (I can include specific scenes where this has happened)

I was tagged by @az-is-back. Thank you! ^^ I don't have a WIP folder. I have a 'Word_doc' folder and everything I've ever written is in there. For the character breakdown ask. Let's go onto solid bases, and say Athanaos. I wonder what you will have to say :)

Solid bases more like old bases, you know I haven't really thought about mcog since- euh. Last winter? Anyway!

How I feel about this character: criminally underused. I don't agree with everything he did but I think his reasoning and justifications would have been VERY interesting to see, especially compared with other characters' willingness to involve themselves into the children's quest, which Athanaos never allowed himself to do.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Mendoza, obviously. We've already talked a lot about this and I don't feel like copy-pasting it all today. They fit very well together and the dynamic is very tasty. And I also kinda ship him with Esteban's mom. Duh. Whatever her name was.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: honestly I think Athanaos and the Chambord alchemists should have gotten some time to be nerds together. What do you mean he sent them letters and told them about his son and his son's quest and we never saw any of that? Let Tao see some non-evil alchemists be nerds like him.

My unpopular opinion about this character: ...I don't think this fandom is big enough to have popular opinions to begin with, not for such a secondary character. I don't like his "healed" look from season 4, mostly because the show couldn't be bothered (or didn't have the budget?) to have that look evolve with time. If he's just beginning to get better then let him begin weak and grow stronger, let his hair grow, heck, even let him get inflicted by the common cold.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: LET HIM TALK ABOUT HIS WIFE!!!!! How come Esteban is looking for his dad but his mom only gets like two sentences, no name and no face?!? That's casual French misogyny for you. Also I think it was Kam who wanted to see Athanaos and Mendoza argue about the children's quest (to help them or to keep away), and yeah I still really want to see that. Mendoza protecting the kids every step of the way is fundamentally at odds with what Athanaos thinks he himself should do, and I want them to clash about it. Why didn't Athanaos even tell Esteban he was alive? Did he have such blind trust in the prophecy? But we've seen with Tian Li that the prophecy can be a warning and other people can influence the quest for good, so what's Athanaos' excuse?
