The most visitor-friendly thing a city's transit system can do
Transit agencies do themselves and their customers a favor when they don't make would-be passengers buy a new stored-fare card or install a new app.
LONDON My packing list for this short trip to the U.K. did not include any plastic cards with embedded electronics, because London was one of the earlier cities in the world to grasp that you can persuade people to take transit if you will just shut up and take their money right before they board instead of first asking them to buy a reloadable transit fare card. By “money” I mean the kind…

Top 10 NFC Security Risks You Should Know:
Tumblr media
NFC payments have made transactions faster and more convenient, but they also come with security risks. By understanding these risks and taking proactive measures, you can enjoy the benefits of contactless payments while staying protected.
Near Field Communication (NFC) has made payments faster and easier, letting you tap your phone, use a mobile wallet, or pay with a contactless card in seconds. In the UAE, where digital payments are growing fast, NFC is now common in supermarkets, restaurants, and even small shops. No need to carry cash—just tap and go!
But while NFC is super convenient, it’s important to stay aware of security risks. Just like any digital technology, there are ways hackers can try to take advantage. The good news? You can take simple steps to keep your payments safe.
In this blog, we’ll explore the top 10 NFC security risks and, more importantly, how to protect yourself while enjoying the ease of contactless payments.
1. Eavesdropping
Eavesdropping occurs when a hacker intercepts the communication between two NFC devices. Since NFC operates over a short range (usually a few centimeters), the risk is lower than other wireless communication methods. However, skilled hackers with specialized equipment can still intercept data.
How to Stay Safe:
Always use encrypted transactions.
Avoid making contactless payments in public places with unsecured networks.
Use mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Samsung pay, which add an extra layer of encryption.
2. Relay Attacks
A relay attack happens when a fraudster intercepts NFC communication and relays it to another device to make unauthorized transactions. This type of attack can be carried out by two hackers working together, where one is near the victim and the other near a payment terminal.
How to Stay Safe:
Enable biometric authentication for payments (fingerprint or facial recognition).
Keep your NFC-enabled card or phone in an RFID-blocking wallet.
Use mobile wallets with tokenization technology.
3. Data Corruption and Manipulation
Hackers can manipulate the data being exchanged during an NFC transaction, leading to altered transaction amounts or unauthorized access.
How to Stay Safe:
Always check the payment details before authorizing transactions.
Use official banking and payment apps that offer security features.
4. Unauthorized Transactions
Contactless payment fraud can occur if someone gets too close to your NFC-enabled card or phone and initiates an unauthorized transaction.
How to Stay Safe:
Set low transaction limits for contactless payments.
Regularly check your transaction history.
Use mobile wallets instead of physical cards for added security.
5. Malware Attacks
Malicious software can be used to exploit vulnerabilities in NFC-enabled smartphones, allowing hackers to gain access to personal and financial information.
How to Stay Safe:
Avoid downloading apps from untrusted sources.
Keep your smartphone software up to date.
Use antivirus software to detect malware threats.
6. Lost or Stolen Devices
If your NFC-enabled phone or card is lost or stolen, someone could use it to make unauthorized payments.
How to Stay Safe:
Immediately report lost or stolen cards to your bank.
Use "Find My Device" features to lock or erase data from a lost phone.
Set up strong PINs or biometric locks.
7. Cloning and Skimming
Skimming devices can be used to steal NFC card information and create duplicate copies for fraudulent use.
How to Stay Safe:
Use an RFID-blocking sleeve for your contactless cards.
Be cautious when tapping your card on unfamiliar payment terminals.
Regularly monitor bank statements for suspicious transactions.
8. Physical Security Threats
Since NFC payments are often used on smartphones and cards, physical theft of these devices can result in unauthorized access to your financial data.
How to Stay Safe:
Enable remote lock and data wipe features for your phone.
Keep your card in a secure wallet or purse.
Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) for banking apps.
9. Fake Payment Terminals
Fraudsters can set up fake payment terminals to capture NFC payment information from unsuspecting users.
How to Stay Safe:
Always check for official branding on payment terminals.
Use Tap on Phone technology with trusted merchants.
Avoid making payments on unfamiliar devices.
10. NFC Sniffing and Spoofing
Attackers can use NFC sniffing tools to collect data from your device and use it for fraudulent activities.
How to Stay Safe:
Turn off NFC when not in use.
Only enable NFC payments when making a transaction.
Use secure apps with encryption and tokenization.
NFC Security in the UAE:
The UAE has been at the forefront of digital payment innovation, with businesses and consumers rapidly adopting NFC-based solutions. Tap on Phone technology, which allows merchants to accept payments directly on their smartphones, is gaining popularity among small businesses and taxi services.
The UAE's regulatory bodies, such as the Central Bank of the UAE, have implemented strict security measures to ensure safe digital transactions. However, users must also take precautions to protect themselves from fraud.
How UAE Businesses Can Improve NFC Security:
Implement strong authentication methods like biometrics and PIN verification.
Educate customers about secure payment practices.
Use payment solutions from reputable providers like Foloosi, which offer advanced security features.
How NFC Will Improve and Expand by 2026:
By 2026, NFC technology will be a normal part of everyday life, making things easier and more convenient. Paying for coffee, unlocking doors, or even starting your car will happen with a simple tap—no more carrying multiple cards or remembering passwords. Security will also be much stronger, with better encryption and biometric authentication, so people can tap and pay without worrying about fraud.
Final Thoughts:
NFC payments have made transactions faster and more convenient, but they also come with security risks. By understanding these risks and taking proactive measures, you can enjoy the benefits of contactless payments while staying protected.
In the UAE, where digital payments are becoming the norm, adopting secure payment practices is essential for both consumers and businesses. Whether you're using Tap on Phone, mobile wallets, or contactless cards, always prioritize security to prevent fraud and unauthorized transactions.
Stay informed, stay secure, and enjoy the ease of NFC payments!

Weekly output: Lifeline explainer, TikTok trends, Google kills Google Pay
BARCELONA–Hola desde MWC! I’m here for my 10th time to cover the giant tech event formerly known as Mobile World Congress. I’m here through Thursday morning, which the past nine years of covering MWC have taught me will be barely enough time to take in the show and probably not enough time for Barcelona tourism. Before I left, I wrote an extra post for Patreon readers sharing my notes on two…

not to be the guy that’s only talking about mizu5, but I think the impact of it is so interesting. obviously it’s going to have the impact of handling a trans character’s story really well —something that is so important as we continue to progress as a society— and I think it’s also a testament to how much these things can blow up. handling a queer character’s story well is going to make a really good impression among audiences (at least, the ones that are progressively becoming louder and louder in the grand scheme of things). I’ve seen this event bringing people into proseka too, which there’s something to be said there
it’s so interesting to me how much this event has spread outside of the immediate and related fandoms for project sekai (think enstars, bang!dream, etc.), onto completely random people’s social media feeds. the amount of tweets I’ve seen from random ass accounts talking about this is kind of fascinating
Tumblr media
like this is just some guy. and I’m obsessed with it.
anyways. big game companies or tv studios. make more trans and queer characters that have care and understanding put into their storylines. it will pay off and age incredibly well and bring you more money
