What Is A Flavor House And How Do They Make Food Taste Great?
The words "flavor house" conjure images of a buzzy café dishing out international cuisine bursting with aromatic spices, sizzling seafood, and flavorful sauces and dips. Exotic music drifts through the room, and conversation flows from table to table — but in reality, a flavor house is nothing even close to that. A flavor house is a food-industry term that, at first glance, seems clinical and calculated, like a science lab but with edible specimens.
In many ways, that's exactly what it is — a place where "flavor chemists" determine how to enhance the taste of packaged food products before they go to market. But don't worry, lab-created food isn't quietly taking over grocery stores and infiltrating our kitchens. Flavor houses have been around for decades, ever since processed and preserved foods became commonplace in Western dining. In fact, they impact the foods we consume on a daily basis and there's a good chance you've already eaten the fruit of their scientific labors.
Natural and synthetic flavor creation
In the simplest terms, flavor houses are commercial food laboratories in which flavor scientists, or "flavorists," create a specific flavor to improve or define the taste of a food product. Heavily processed foods, which vastly populate the Western food supply, can lose flavor as they're baked, fried, and frozen, according to Kim Juelg, a senior flavorist and organoleptic scientist at Givaudan, the world's largest flavor house, who explained the process to Dr. Sanjay Gupta at CNN.
A primary example of how flavor scientists influence the taste of food comes in the small print on a product label, one that says something like "contains natural and artificial flavoring." Those flavors can come from natural sources or synthetic ones, and the goal is either replicating an existing flavor or creating an entirely new one. Sometimes, flavor houses also step in to meet a sourcing need, such as when a natural ingredient is in short supply or is prohibitively expensive for general consumers.
For example imitation vanilla or "maple flavored" syrup can be substituted when vanilla beans or maple tree sap is hard to obtain. Flavorings can also help improve the taste of low-fat foods. The Senopsys corporation, in describing flavor creations, defines flavor as referring to "all tastes, aromas, mouthfeels, and textures of a product." A professional formulator blends chemicals, natural extracts, and reaction products to create the desired effect.
How widespread is the practice?
Flavor houses deal in proprietary trade secrets across the food industry, even though only about 1,000 flavorists exist worldwide, dealing with thousands of aroma compounds for blending and flavoring your food. Professionals in the field typically start as chemists or food scientists, then follow a seven-year path of apprenticeship and testing to receive accreditation. If the idea of this food intervention keeps you up at night, rest assured.
Even though a single flavor typically contains 25 to 30 compounds, the flavoring in a product usually doesn't exceed 1% of its total volume. And the FDA evaluates food seasonings to determine whether to classify them as GRAS, meaning "Generally Regarded as Safe." The agency points out that every consumable item, whether fresh from Mother Nature or combined with other ingredients, contains chemical compounds influencing how they taste, look, and feel, as well as what kind of nutrition they provide to human bodies. Flavor houses just add more to the equation.

CHILI LIME TORTILLAS

Ingredients:
10 (5-inch) corn tortilla chips
3 tbsp avocado oil
Juice of 1 1/2 limes
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp salt
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 375°F
In a small bowl combine the avocado oil, lime juice, chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika
Stack the tortillas and cut in them half. Then cut each half into 3 triangles, leaving you with 30 chips total
Lay the tortilla pieces on 2 large baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Using a silicone brush, coat each side of all of the chips with the lime mixture
Bake the chips for 15 minutes until they golden brown. Cool them for about 10 minutes and serve

▶️ Cashew Butter Cookie Dough Bars 🍪🍫 ▫️ Ingredients: 🔵 1 cup cashew butter 🔵 1 cup almond flour 🔵 1/3 cup agave or maple syrup 🔵 1 tsp vanilla extract 🔵 1/2 tsp salt **use only if cashew butter is unsalted 🔵 1 cup mini chocolate chips (reserve half for coating 🔵 1 tsp coconut oil ▫️ ◾Instructions: ▫️ In a large mix, mix together the cashew butter, agave, vanilla, and salt if using. ▫️ Once well-combined stir in the almond flour. ▫️ Fold in 1/2 a cup of the chocolate chips, then press into a lined 8X8 baking dish. Let freeze for 1 hour. ▫️ Melt the remaining half cup of chocolate chips with 1 tsp of coconut oil. ▫️ Remove the batter from the freezer and spread melted chocolate on top. Return to freezer for an additional 10 minutes. Oh man thats so fucked up i didn't know that, damn big corporations are fucking evil. Didn't believe this at first because its a textbook example of unreliable source (makes me angry, seems surreal and has no sources cited) but its true according to Wikipedia and TastingTable)
the story of kfc fucks me up man. the colonel founded this gas station that expanded to restaurant, the chicken at the restaurant gets popular, makes KFC, it gets big and he sells it to a corporation for a lot of money. realizes he got sorta scammed out of the true worth of kfc so tries to get more money and they refuse and the courts side against him. then he starts a new chicken restaurant claiming the corporate people were not making chicken to his standards and kfc sued him because kfc owned the colonel's likeness and the courts agreed. a corporation owned this man's name and appearance. he wasnt allowed to use either, thus legally erasing his reputation making it harder for him to get taken seriously in any food venture. the man, to the day he died, was going into kfc's and throwing fits because the food had fallen into such bad shape he hated it was associated with him. and it's like, whether he's a bad man or a good man or whatever, a corporation owned his identity, stopped him from using his reputation and identity in other businesses, and refused to acknowledge his outrage that they changed his recipes and still attributed it to him. this is literally the obnoxious plot of a jay and silent bob movie, but it was this dude's real life. what the fuck.

A charcuterie board is an appetizer typically served on a wooden board or stone slab, either eaten straight from the board itself or portioned onto flatware. It features a selection of preserved foods, especially cured meats or pâtés, as well as cheeses and crackers or bread! Thought I'd do a little kids version alongside cake and strawberries 🍓
While "charcuterie" technically means a range of different cured meats, these platters go beyond salami and prosciutto, typically featuring various cheeses, crackers, spreads and produce!
They seem to be popular party pieces - for starters, they're extremely flexible: you can adjust the ingredients for different preferences, scale the portions up or down based on the number of guests and make them as affordable (or high-end) as you'd like. You can even tie them to a certain theme, like a color, geographic region or season. But perhaps the main reason they're a must for entertaining is that they require zero culinary skills to assemble.
8 ways to make a great board 🥖🧈
1) Choose soft, pre-sliced meats (like pro (like prosciutto or jamón Ibérico), and a couple harder meats that require cutting (like a log of salami or soppressata).
2) Place harder cheeses, like a block of sharp cheddar or Manchego, alongside harder meats.
3) Add at least one spreadable cheese (like chèvre) or a dip (like tzatziki or hummus)
4) Throw in some complementary snacks. I'm talking crackers, jam, bread, pickles, fruit, honeycomb and whatever else you fancy.
5) Dress it up - beyond serving it on a pretty wooden butcher block or a marble cutting board, consider working in other decorative elements.
6) Tiny label tags are helpful and cute, while little bowls and plates to hold preserves or fruit add colour and dimension to the spread.
7) Pick the right size board.
8) If its for the family (kids especially) then keeping it simple is key - you can never go wrong with string cheese, crackers and juice boxes.

INDIAN STYLE VEG MECARONI
INGREDIENTS OF INDIAN STYLE VEGETABLE MACARONI
4 Servings
1 1/2 cup pasta macaroni
1/4 cup finely chopped carrot
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon red chilli powder
1 tablespoon salt
3 tablespoon refined oil
2 tablespoon tomato ketchup
2 pinches mustard seeds
1 pinch powdered asafoetida
1/2 handful coriander leaves
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped tomato
1/4 cup chopped capsicum ( green pepper)
30 grams baby corn
For Garnishing
3 tablespoon spring onions
HOW TO MAKE INDIAN STYLE VEGETABLE MACARONI
Step 1 / 3
Heat a pan of salted water over medium flame. Allow it to boil for 5 minutes. Now add the macaroni pasta in the boiling water and cook until aldente. Once the macaroni pasta is cooked, drain well and keep the macaroni aside. Allow it to cool for few minutes.
Step 2 / 3
Heat oil in a pan over medium flame. Fry the mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida powder for 30 seconds.
Step 3 / 3
Once the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the carrots, onions, spring onions, tomato, capsicum, baby corn, macaroni, tomato sauce and red chilli powder. Stir well and cook the macaroni for a minute or two. Remove from flame and add lemon juice. Mix well and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve at once.
