Mori Nagayoshi- Househusband Edition

- Mori Nagayoshi makes for one hell of an interesting househusband: he's skilled with his hands, incredibly devoted, extremely chaotic and hard-working; all in one package. It may take time for him to get used to the role, but he'll try. - Firstly, he has a rather amusing reputation within your workplace as the 'bloodthirsty lover' for his rather intricate yet violent bento lunchbox arrangements. Somebody, for the love of god stop Mori from making such ghastly decorations with pickled plums, peppers, ketchup and tomatoes!!! - Despite that, he makes absolutely delicious grub. Though the kitchen may transform into a miniature replica of hell once he's finished (trying all these new recipes despite being an ancient warrior isn't easy, you know!); the love he pours into every meal is incredible. As Mori's a rather avid reader, he doesn't mind checking out a recipe book to bolster the family's range of meals every now and then. - You better watch him when he's cutting up the food, though. Look at how skilled he is with tearing into meat! "Well, it ain't that different in texture from what I usually cut, anyway." It makes all the difficulty of adapting to being the household cook worth it when you praise him for his efforts. - Because he has no clue about what on earth modern cleaning is all about, "Who the heck invented all of this?!", he sometimes ends up being advised by local people in the community willing to help. To them, he's an utter riot and fun to be around! As he's a pretty smart guy, he catches onto their advice and tips on how to maintain the household pretty quickly. - But his curiosity definitely gets the better of him, such as him stabbing a Roomba with his spear just to see 'how it damn works!' At least he's doing his best to learn! He does prefer cleaning jobs that require him to use a lot of his strength, though. - When going grocery shopping, it's best if you give him a list. All of these new sights and sounds really excite him. However, he's also the kind of househusband who would rage on your behalf if anything you wished for was out of stock! In fact, he has ended up causing quite the fracas over that. - Mori likes to walk around the vicinity of the area and explore, stopping off at interesting places and learning new things from the various people around him. And hey, if said experience helps him build upon his househusband skill meter; then all the better.

- Whenever he has no chores to perform, he loves to join the locals for nearby Naginata Classes. Though the Naginata is a little different from the spear he's used to wielding, it gives him the opportunity to not only have fun socializing over what he enjoys doing, but also to forge new bonds. - He also is a popular regular for Calligraphy Classes, even winning some major competition titles! His accolades with the brush have made him quite the celebrity in your area, locals hiring him to write stuff for special events and festivals. If it's fun, then Mori is all for it. - In the case where you may possibly have little ones, he may make for a rather intense yet fun parent- though his terrifying method of waking them up through various uncanny means may scare the little ones a bit. However, he'd ensure that he arrives on time to all of their events; not wanting to miss out on a single moment. - Because you're so often at work, Mori often misses you. He wishes that the two of you could spend more time together. Though he doesn't mind his role as the warrior of the household- he'll stake his very soul into protecting it- he wishes he could return to the days where the two of you would let your hair down, just having fun doing whatever! - As a result, he may come off as a bit clingy whenever you're back from work, wanting to join you in the bath, hold you against his chest- as well as many other things. You likely won't be able to pry him away from you! okay so I have 3: Suna, Tatsumi and Aria, but I'm gonna talk about Suna and Tatsu (pics in that order, courtesy of this picrew) both of them are from a kimetsu no yaiba/demon slayer inspired campaign (which is currently on a hiatus that has lasted over 6 months, but should return shortly!!)

so, first we have the user of the water breathing technique suna, the girl that was born to be the perfect demon slayer. she's known about the existence of demons ever since she can remember, both of her parent being demon slayers and wanting her to be ready to face the world they live in. she trained all her life to join her parents, her free time being spent with the kid next door (which sets up the best and angstiest childhood friends to lovers storyline ever). she used to be really cheerful and welcoming, and it's only after her parents disappear that she closes herself off, the only 2 people able to get to her being the boy next door (kyojuro rengoku) and her dad's best friend, who took her in and finished her training. throughout the campaign she meets both naru and haru her teammates, developing different relationships with both of them, but caring about them in her own weird way. as time passes their missions start getting more dangerous until the inevitable happens and one of them died, haru, she managed to survive and closed herself once more due to the pain and guilt, pushing yasuhiro (the demon slayer sent to fill haru's place) away and mistreating him. then she lost the love of her life and once again she blamed herself for not being good enough to save those she cares about, so she spends all her time training eventually developing her own fighting style, and sacrificing herself to save both naru and yasuhiro.

then there's tatsumi, the character I created in case suna died. she's the polar opposite of suna. tatsumi didn't learn about the existence of demons until she received a letter from her brother yuuji, in which he apologized for keeping demons a secret from her and their family. determined to find her brother she decided to join the demon slayers. she became a user of the mist breathing technique, learning quickly and soon enough becoming a demon slayer herself, eventually catching the attention of the mist hashira himself, tokito, who took her under his wing so she would eventually become his successor if anything happened to him. due to the trust placed in her she was allowed to go on solo missions, which meant she could secretly look for yuuji. it was only after she came back from a mission that she was informed she would be joining a squad, taking the place of a recently deceased woman, only to find out one of the 2 remaining members had decided to leave the organization, leaving only her and yasuhiro in the team. tbh there's not a lot about tatsumi story wise because of the hiatus, but she's a literal ray of sunshine, doing everything to remain positive and lift the party's mood because she promised herself (and her brother) that she would never stop smiling, no matter how hard things got.

with my bestie (the player behind haru and yasuhiro) we have actually worked on a lot of different AU's for the characters, my personal favorite being the kpop au!! the ship dynamics are amazing !! (+ everyone is alive)

Thanks for your request, anon! Sorry this took me so long to get to, you were buried in my inbox lol. But I hope this was worth the wait because oh boy this required all 3 of my brain cells.

Tornado of Terror: As you said, soap operas. She also loves candy apples in canon. But...she also is a HUGE fan of those really cheesy Cosmopolitan magazines that have all of the personality quizzes and the “which hot male celeb would date you” scenarios. She doesn’t fall for it one bit. In fact, she hate reads those fuckers in the same way that people pay to go see bad movies. It’s fun.

Silverfang: Yoga and following along to some cheesy-ass 80s workout videos. I’ve said he likes yoga in a previous headcanon, but he also likes to exercise along to some obnoxious 80s pop while some dude in a leotard instructs him on what to do from a TV screen. He wears sweatbands and legwarmers, too. The whole shebang. He only does it when he’s alone, though. Sometimes he’ll try to teach yoga to his disciples as a way to help them decompress after a long training session, but his workout tapes are his best-kept secret.

Atomic Samurai: I don’t know what a SMAP is, but he’s definitely got some questionable music choices going on considering he’s... well, the way that he is. I’d say he likes to listen to old country, like Marty Robbins and Glen Campbell. It’s really funny because you’ve got this intimidating man from Japan (or a fictional universe basically set in Japan) with a badass katana and shit but inside that empty head of his, there’s just a faint “out in the west Texas town of El Paso....”

Child Emperor: Picking at scabs. He’s often on his knees fixing shit in his lab, and he probably gets burned all the damn time from playing around with lasers so he’s undoubtedly always has a wound healing somewhere. Whenever he’s working on something, he’ll just absentmindedly pick at his scabs. It’s a bad habit and he knows it, but nothing beats the feeling of peeling off an entire patch of that shit. So satisfying.

Metal Knight: Buying books. He doesn’t even read them. He just buys bigass novels with smart-sounding names to fill up his library because he thinks it’ll make his dick grow another three inches or some shit. One of the few things he likes in this world (besides homicide) is the smell of a new book. If he’s feeling particularly pissy, he’ll go into his library and just ssssssnnnnnnnnnniififfffffffffff. He spends an outrageous amount of money on it. If he has anyone over (which is unlikely, but hypothetically speaking) and they mention his library by asking something like “have you read all of these?” It’ll be one of the few times in his life that he’ll feel shame.

King: Reading and writing fanfiction based on his favorite video game/anime series. Nobody knows he does this except his small following online, of course. And even more so, nobody online knows he’s an ultra-popular S-Class hero who’s friends with the most powerful man on earth. He’s actually a pretty decent writer, he just doesn’t take himself too seriously so the plotline to his stories tend to get a little haywire and overly self-indulgent. Let him have his fun. He just wants to be a Sailor Scout.

Zombieman: Singing. He actually used to be a good singer (he sounded like a discount Steve Perry back in the day), but constant smoking really fucked up his voice. He might as well have lungs the size of grapes because he can’t carry a note for more than 2 seconds without wheezing like an accordion with asthma. He’s never sang in front of anyone before because he thinks it’s silly thing that isn’t worth showing off. Play anything from The Eagles though, and he’ll have a hard time resisting.

Drive Knight: He likes to open up panels in his arms and legs to play with the wires (basically a robot’s version of nerve endings, I’m assuming) just so he can feel something. It’s kind of sad because he doesn’t experience pain or the cold or being tickled... (I know what y’all are thinking and you’d better STOP). So he sometimes takes it upon himself to dick around with his insides and dip his toe into what it feels like to be human, even if it’s just for a little bit. He’s super secretive about it (he’s just secretive about everything, really) because he doesn’t want anyone to know that he desires something outside of being a weapon of mass destruction justice.

Pig God: His whole schtick is basically indulging in a guilty pleasure — pigging out on delicious food with no regard whatsoever for one’s overall health. Other than that, however, he does like to collect body pillows. There, I said it. All he fucking does is eat and he’s too much of a big boi to be going out 24/7, so he’s gotta be on the internet/watching anime/playing video games/reading manga during all of that downtime between his stints of doing hero work. His bed is fucking ginormous to handle all of that big boy-ness and on it, he has his body pillow nest. He rests on a throne made for kings. A true icon.

Superalloy Darkshine: Also working out along to some cheesy 80s exercise videos. His hero outfit was inspired from what those ravishing instructors would wear on the television. Well, it was supposed to be a full leotard but it ripped every time he flexed just a tiny bit so the speedo is the only thing that’s left. He’s gotta hella rhythm and keeps up with the music using little to no effort. Although, he can’t go too hard because he’s also a big boi and he’ll literally shake the entire building if he gets too turnt up. Dance muscle boy, dance.

Watchdog Man: Eating too many dog treats lol. Sometimes while he’s stationed on his little podium thing, visitors will leave him little offerings like dog treats and other miscellaneous food items/toys. He never takes them or eats them in front of people, but he often brings everything home with him after a long day just to gobble that shit up. He’s gained a little weight since he started doing it but you can’t even notice it because his suit is hella bulky. Some of it is due in part to stress-eating because being a dog and dude at the same time is hectic, but it’s honest work.

Flashy Flash: Racing shit. Whenever he’s on his travels during, say, assassination missions or hero work, he gets hella bored really quickly. So, to help with this, he’ll often race birds or planes flying in the sky on his way to his destination to see who’s quicker (it’s always him). Sometimes he’ll even play catch with himself by throwing a pine cone or something and running to the place he guesses it’ll land before it even touches the ground. He just does a ton of weird speedster shit whenever he’s bored and he’ll deny it if anyone asks.

Genos: Purposefully putting a little bit too much oil on his joints after each upgrade so he’ll be as slick as a salamander. It’s a really funny feeling to be able to move your limbs with little to no resistance without having to worry about popping or breaking anything. It just makes him feel so agile despite being like, a hunk of actual metal. If he wasn’t so uptight, he would loosen the screws in his fingers to he can bend them almost all the way back (he’s actually thought about it a few times), but both Dr. Kuseno and his 3 remaining braincells attested to that. He just likes to tinker around with his body and see what weird shit he can do. It’s a bad habit because it’s led to a few things being broken on multiple occasions.

Metal Bat: Zenko’s shitty pop music. Whenever he drops her off at school or piano practice, he’ll immediately go home and blast that shit on full volume (because he’s practically deaf from always jumping out of falling buildings and continuously blasting music in his earbuds) while doing chores and the like. He’s one of those people that HAVE to have something going on in the background as they’re getting shit done. He’d rather be caught dead than listening to the OPM equivalent of Taylor Swift because he knows Zenko would never let him live it down.

Tanktop Master: Wearing suits around the house when he’s not even going anywhere. He’s got to wear his tanktop 24/7 whenever he’s in public to keep up The Image (which he has no problem with, he genuinely loves the tanktop ideology) but he also needs to feel fancy every once and a while. So, if he happens to have the time while in between appearances, he’ll prance around in a suit tailored just for him. Because he’s so fucking huge that he had to pay someone a large sum to custom make an outfit that actually fits. He is 7-motherfucking-feet tall. 7.

Puri-Puri Prisoner: Making Valentine’s Day cards all times of the year. Listen, it gets boring as hell in prison. Sometimes the guards will let all of the inmates have a little glitter and glue to keep themselves busy because no harm can come of a little arts and crafts, right? He likes to make cards on the daily just to let all of his lovers know how much he appreciates them. If they express even the slightest amount of disdain for his creations, he’ll spent the next week crying in the darkest corner of his cell block. He also likes origami. Origami is huge in prison because it’s hella time-consuming and guaranteed to calm a busy mind. His favorite things to make are little unicorns.

Amai Mask: Bath bombs. There have been several mishaps in which he’s used a poorly-made bath bomb and came out of the tub looking like Shrek but he’s grown and lot since then, okay? After a long day or a particularly stressful concert, he’ll sink into some hot water and drop a ball of lavender-scented goodness in there. It’s become a bit of an addiction because he’s got multiple cabinets dedicated solely to his collection, but at least he always smells divine.

Iaian: Shakespearean dramas. Kama got him hooked on theater shit and he’s since ripped through all of the most well-known plays. He thinks in iambic pentameter. It wasn’t always noticeable since he’s a quiet, well-reserved guy but his fellow disciples and Kami have recently noticed that he’s developed a bit of a dramatic flair. Even worse, he’s started calling himself a knight whenever he puts on his armor. Everyone prays it’s just a phase but seeing as how stubborn Iaian is, that seeks highly unlikely. Kami is dying inside because he can’t handle another drama nerd.

Okamaitachi: Soap operas, like Tatsumaki. Kama is the most dramatic out of all of the disciples so it’s only natural that she’d like the most dramatic genre of any show out there. She doesn’t exactly watch them religiously though. She’s the type of viewer to drop off the face of the earth for three seasons and come back without knowing what the fuck is going on (because the disciples have limited access to cable due to Kami’s dumbassery and ignorance to anything technology-related), but still cry during the finale anyway because oh no these people are so hot and one of them is deaaaaaad and the other one is that person’s long-lost sister....

Bushidrill: Taking alcohol from Atomic Samurai’s stash every so often. Bushidrill knows what the good shit is and he could buy it himself if he wanted to, but why would he when there’s a perfectly good alcoholic to steal from living right down the hall? He only takes in small doses because, believe it or not—he’s smart, but Kami isn’t gonna notice regardless of whether or not Bushi takes 1 or 5 bottles at a time because the old shit couldn’t spot a purple raccoon if it was 3 feet in front of him. There have been times where Bushi has opened bottles of Kami’s alcohol right in front of him just to play God and he always, without missing a beat, says “Oh, we have the same taste. How neat.”

Fubuki: I’ve said this before in a previous headcanon, but she has a mild obsession with Victorian aesthetic. She’s got a small collection of semi-authentic ballgowns that cost upwards of a-fuckton-of-money each, but anything’s worth it to be able to play dress-up with Lily. Fubuki’s favorite thing is making Lily feel beautiful because everyone has been an insecure teenager at one point and she knows how it feels to not be comfortable in one’s own skin. This isn’t exactly a guilty pleasure because she’s not guilty about it, but it’s almost gotten to a point where an intervention is needed. She’s got so many damn dresses and sooooo much fine china....

Saitama: Retail therapy, lol. Saitama is only good at budgeting because he has no choice given how fucking poor he is, but give this boy even a little bit of leeway and he’ll buy the ugliest clothes (to which he thinks look poppin’) and the best meats without even batting an eye. His entire manga collection is the product of him having little to no self control the moment he realizes he’s got a bit of money to spend on himself. This is also the only time he’ll experiment with cooking because now he can actually afford to fuck up, literally.

Mumen Rider: Sweets! I’ve said this in a previous hc but he has a major sweet tooth. You can substitute salt for sugar in any given recipe and he’ll see it as a major improvement because he just goes absolutely buckwild for anything sweet. His pancreas is suffering, but he believes nothing feels better than curling up under the covers on a rainy day with a heaping helping of milk chocolate. The only thing that makes him feel better after getting beat to shit is a kiss on the cheek and box of his favorite cookies (and some bananas, lol).

Sonic: Like Flash, he also likes racing things. But, in addition to that, his guilty pleasure is doing his own hair in elaborate hairstyles (when it was longer). He’s pretty much homeless so he’s got a lot of time to himself in between murders. This is when you can find him sitting in the woods somewhere braiding flowers into his hair and tying it off with a moss ribbon. He’d never admit he does this because he’s a big macho man and he’d probably cry.

Garou: Spicy chips. I’ve said this before in a previous hc, but he absolutely inhales his food without even tasting it half the time so it’s not even like he gets to enjoy the flavor that much. He just likes the burn because he’s a shithead. He also doesn’t fear death or a torn-up asshole, so he’ll eat an entire family-sized bag of the OPM-universe equivalent to Takis without even batting an eye. He’s been beat to shit so many times that the agony that comes with downing so much spice is lost on him. He doesn’t even need water. It’s insane. Someone stop this madman at once.

Silence filled the room. Those in the guild knew Tatsu and Levy well. Even if they fought they made up well and they truly loved each other. It seemed everyone supported their union except maybe a jealous few who decided not to attend or other's who couldn't be there for other reasons. Everyone was seated, letting the officiant continue with the ceremony.

"Our first reading today comes from a novel by Robert Fulghum." He opened an old book, provided by Levy, before reading the passage that was marked. "You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making promises and agreements in an informal way. All those conversations that were held riding in a car or over a meal or during long walks—all those sentences that began with "When we're married" and continued with "I will and you will and we will"—those late night talks that included "someday" and "somehow" and "maybe"—and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding. The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, "You know all those things we've promised and hoped and dreamed—well, I meant it all, every word." Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another—acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, and even teacher, for you have learned much from one another in these last few years. Now you shall say a few words that take you across a threshold of life, and things will never quite be the same between you. For after these vows, you shall say to the world, this—is my husband, this—is my wife."

Levy glanced over at Tatsu, smiling before the officiant moved onto the next part of the ceremony. "Marriage is perhaps the greatest and most challenging adventure of human relationships. No ceremony can create your marriage; only you can do that—through love and patience; through dedication and perseverance; through talking and listening, helping and supporting and believing in each other; through tenderness and laughter; through learning to forgive, learning to appreciate your differences, and by learning to make the important things matter, and to let go of the rest. What this ceremony can do is to witness and affirm the choice you make to stand together as life mates and partners." 

The officiant than turned to Tatsu first, reading from the small script he had made up. "Do you, Tatsu, take this woman to be your wedded wife?"

Akiyasu Kurahashi! A rant!

Aki was one of the characters that grew on me. Around during the events of the dawn book I hated what he did. This applies to Kagemaru also (later on I fell for him as well, but that's for another rant)

Aki looked like an antagonist but I was still curious about what lay behind that exterior... what forced him to do things he did? the entire picture..

I was curious but I never thought I'd end up loving him. My love for him grew gradually... similar to the gradual way he changed... It almost felt natural and now I truly love him and he's one of my fav characters in ARR. I think its the character growth plus the time gap... made him loveable.

In an event, they show him regretting his actions, feeling insecure about his status... he also questions himself if he deserves Mc's love... and that truly broke my heart. Aki's character and his feelings are as real as they can be... from someone who's done sinister deeds to someone walking the road to restoration, his growth is something I loved to witness...

I'm so glad I gave his mainstory a chance. What am I saying! I loved ARR so much that I read all lovers books, even the books of the guys who are not my type. But to be honest they are all adorable, really. I have many favorites in ARR which is why I'm reluctant to accept the ending we got in the EN app.

Back to Akiyasu, I think a good amount of time had passed between the events of dawn before his book was released. He moved away from the MC and the others and underwent lots of emotional changes. (Yes, he still struck with Kagemaru, but even so that was to pay him back, wasn't it? Aki became withdrawn and lonely. He'd always bee that way, tho he was with Tatsu. His quest for revenge never really let him live a free life) I

In the mean time we as readers/MC kind of naturally became more forgiving. (I kind of liked Aki in the start, too, though he was bad. Not the docile Aki, nope. He was sugary sweet and it was actually very suspicious. )

I loved it when he showed his true colors. More like, loved the challenge he posed and how Futaba dealt with it. In the end, when he couldn't land the final blow was when I knew he had some good in him. (of course I knew he had to have it. this wouldn't be otome if he didn't.)

His book had a lot of self loathing on his part. His regret was evident and I totally enjoyed every bit of his and Futaba's journey to the end scene...

When he holds her and cries saying how he can't bear the burdens of his sins alone...

(now this is different from yura's where the MC jumps to being in love with him as soon as he "corrects" his mistake of attempting to sacrifice her! I just couldn't connect to them there... Nevertheless, I forgave Yura. I even like him. He's funny and dotes a lot on Gaku. Just my feelings for him have always been platonic and his book did nothing to make me fall in love.)

Aki and MC have come a long way and the mutual support they got, the way they watch out for each other, do little things, go on sweet little dates (while getting a little jealous and possessive at times), I loved all of that and I've come to love Aki a lot.... Ryohei's voice while he voices the "real" Aki is my favorite haha. I won't start about my favorite ARR seiyu's voices because that'd make another essay

This year's JP app Akiyasu's birthday story looks soon good... I'd buy it if I earn an SSR ticket! lol I'm spending a lot on COD this month so don't think I can spend more.

In this post I’ll just put the remaining interesting miscellaneous pictures (food and drink, non-shoujo otaku/pop culture, and lychee stuff - my favourite fruit ^^).

For all you Persona 5 lovers out there, our airbnb apartment was in Sangen-jaya, the real-life neighborhood on which Persona 5′s Yangen-jaya is based on (san meaning 3 in Japanese and yon meaning 4 lol). 8D

There was an event in Ikebukuro’s Animate (manga/anime/otaku-stuff chain store) celebrating Final Fantasy’s 30th Anniversary. Here’s a large Tonberry plush:

Still in Ikebukuro, my sister and I booked a time slot for the Swallowtail butler cafe. I was the only male client in the cafe for almost the whole duration of our stay (you have to book a timeslot in advance and the 2 person ones go out fast). I personally find Akihabara’s maid cafes tacky, but the Swallowtail butler cafe had more an atmosphere of a fancy restaurant. The food and decor are European-style. The service is excellent (you ring a bell to call your waiter to refill your cup of tea!? and the waiters come to the side of the table and bow after every time they service your needs). Alas, no pictures are allowed once inside the cafe proper.

We went to a Pokemon Center (Pokemon merch store) in Sunshine City (a skyscraper complex in Ikebukuro with a shopping mall, a small museum, a planetarium, an aquarium, a hotel, a theatre, and a theme park - Namja Town) situated in Ikebukuro (again) and there was some sort of event with a gigantic inflated Exeggutor.

We also went to arcades (in Ikebukuro). Taiko games are fun. I really enjoyed drumming to Koi by Hoshino Gen, a hugely popular Japanese song (as of writing). It’s also the theme song for the drama adaptatio of Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu, an ongoing Josei manga series by Umino Tsunami.

Crane-games at the arcade. These are hard. The cranes are so weak they have a hard time picking anything heavier than a tiny plush. 

They had meat chunk plushies LOL! This totally reminded me of Shibata from Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai xD

I then went and took purikura (photo booth stickers photos, you can’t possibly not know this if you’ve read shoujo manga for any amount of time lol) with my sister (solo guys weren’t allowed lol). xD

I found it pretty fun (even if I look horrible with the filters as a guy); definitely go try it out if you’re ever in Japan~

Food:

Bento box sold at Shinagawa station (pics taken in the Shinkansen). Major train stations all have stores selling bento box meals for Japanese businessmen short on time.

Bento box sold in a supermarket we ate for breakfast. While not obviously high-end cuisine, I was surprise to find out how good these tasted for the price paid.

And the meal wouldn’t be complete without soy sauce, here in a cute little fish disposable container.

I don’t understand why there’s no “seaweed” flavour potato chips sold overseas (where I live). These are sooo good and tasty .>.<

Here’s the washoku (traditional Japanese cuisine) dinner we were served in our room by our Hakone hotel.

We also had a traditional breakfast in the morning.

Back in Tokyo we went to Genki sushi in Shibuya, a conveyor sushi restaurant but with a twist: instead of having a selection of fresh sushi rolling around up for grabs, each seat has a tablet on which you can select the fish you want. And then the sushi plate would come up to you on any of 3 rail levels. Other than that perk, it was very tasty and cheap (~1000 to 1500 yen can easily fill you).

No trip to Japan would be complete without a ramen meal. So here’s one of the two I had, with a side of nice gyoza dumplings.

Another cheap tonkatsu meal from a restaurant in sangen-jaya. 

The restaurant featured a ticket vending machine more commonly seen in ramen restaurant in which you order what you want on the machine and hand it over to the staff once you take a seat. Very convenient if you don’t know the language (if there is an English option on the machine, that is).

Kiwi Fanta (with added vitamin E) from a vending machine. This has a pretty snazzy taste, I think I prefer it to the classic orange Fanta. But you know, it’s not available where I live. :/

Now THIS drink is special. It’s basically your ubiquitous Japanese melon soda, but you have to shake it (very counter-intuitive for a drink in a can lol) or else it’s just some weird-tasting slime. The drink has a very fuzzy flavour.

I thought I had more pictures of vending machine drinks (vending machines in Japan have a very large variety of drinks and it’s well-known that Japan has a diverse selection of flavours when it comes to drinks), but apparently not.

Hi lovely, i’m sorry for the late reply! Here are some things I thought were useful, although I am not an expert so if there is anything missing or wrong, anyone can add on to this or message me :) When it comes to actual comic books, I know a whole lot more about DC than I do Marvel.

DC COMICS

The hardest part about reading comics is probably the starting part, because it can be an indecisive process, especially when you don’t know any characters or story lines. I suggest starting with the Rebirth series, which is pretty much a refocusing of everything in the DC Universe, because it is began in mid-2016 and is currently being released, so it will be much easier to jump into! If not there is also the New 52 series, which is the relaunch they had in 2011, prior to Rebirth. Also, some of the Pre New 52 comics are really good too like Green Arrow and Black Canary and of course your Batman and Detective Comics etc.

WHERE TO START:

Start By Finding A Character You Like

This is probably the easiest way to get started, at least it was for me. Before even reading a comic I loved Harley Quinn, so when i decided to start reading the comics, I chose to follow her story line first. I found out that her first appearance in The New 52 was in issue #1 of the Suicide Squad comic, so I started there.

Starting At Issue #1?

Whilst starting at issue #1 in whatever series you choose can be beneficial in that you won’t have much missing information, it isn’t 100% necessary. With comics, you can start with any issue, and eventually after reading a few, you will get the hang of deciphering which unknown information was in previous issues (which i always just research on wikipedia if necessary) and which information will be given to you in future issues.

HOWEVER

with DC Rebirth, start with DC Rebirth #1 (http://www.dccomics.com/comics/dc-universe-rebirth-2016/dc-universe-rebirth-1) and then you should start with the Rebirth #1 comic for each title (e.g. Flash Rebirth 1) before starting with the actual #1 of the title (e.g. The Flash #1).

with the New 52, you can start with the Flashpoint (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic-novels/flashpoint) comics, which explains how the New 52 timeline reset came to be.

Chronological Order

If you are really committed, and want to read an entire comic launch (e.g. the New 52, Rebirth) in order of when they were published, you can use this handy webpage, which lists all the DC issues that were released each week (start at 08/31/2011 for New 52 and 05/25/2016 for Rebirth).

Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel)

A former psychiatrist turned mentally insane supervillain. Harley Quinn has some of the best character depth in the DC Universe, as a survivor of great physical and mental abuse by her “lover”, the Joker. With Harley, you’ll get great action/fighting, amazing humour and even better character development. She is also one of the canonically LGBT+ comic characters, with a fluid sexuality  (unknown as strictly bi, pan etc.) and polyamorous tendencies, as represented by her relationships with Poison Ivy and Mason. She is an unconventional symbol of hope, as she undergoes a great journey of self-discovery and independence, whilst continuing to demonstrate homicidal and psychotic behaviour.

Primarily Featured in ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Harley Quinn’ comics

HARLEY QUINN: PSYCHOLOGY, DOMESTIC ABUSE AND CHARACTER GROWTH

Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) & Green Arrow (Oliver Queen)

So I put these two together because there are things I want to say about them as a pairing, as well as individually. Dinah and Oliver as a pairing (known as Green Canary) are without a doubt one of the greatest comic romantic pairings. Individually and as a couple, they are definitely near the top of my favourites list (and by that I mean they are literally in second place after Harley and Ivy). However to shit on my life, in the New 52, the Green Arrow storyline follows more closely to the likes of the TV Show Arrow, in which Ollie and Dinah no longer have a romantic history (what the fuck), and instead Oliver is involved in a team up with characters John Diggle and Felicity Smoak (who is sorta the replacement Oracle… which we’ll discuss in a second). Being completely biased here, i’ll say that the biggest mistake of the New 52 was not continuing the romance between Dinah and Ollie, as well as the friendship between Oliver and Hal Jordan (Green Lantern). LUCKILY, in DC Rebirth’s ‘Green Arrow’, Green Canary is back, with a reset of the timeline bringing us a completely fresh “first meeting” of Dinah and Ollie, and a whole lot of future potential.

Bookshelf Briefs 9/26/19

Black Clover, Vol. 17 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – As predicted, friends are fighting friends in this one, as a good deal of the cast have been Possessed By Elves. Not Asta, of course; he’s our hero. But Yuno seems to be affected… except he proves to be the only one with the mental strength to throw it off. I’d roll my eyes at this if it weren’t Black Clover, a series that runs on clichés. Speaking of which, remember that nun from chapter one? The one Asta is theoretically still in love with? She returns here as the villains go after the orphanage, allowing Asta and Yuno to return and show off how much they’ve grown. Black Clover loves to run on things we’ve seen before, but this volume may have had a bit TOO much of that, as it was unsurprising. But still fun. – Sean Gaffney

Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 2 | By Mika Yamamori | Viz Media – I will admit, this series is going to live or die on how far it takes the teacher student romance—I don’t THINK it’s endgame, but as with most shoujo it’s hard to make sure. (Shonen romances are nice enough to telegraph the winner in the first chapter.) It’s well-crafted, and the author seems to be aware of the issues it involves, but we shall see. Till then, I do enjoy the kids hanging out with each other, particularly when Suzume manages to be so sleepy during a study break that Yuyuya’s mask slips off and she starts berating her in front of everyone—though the masochistic guys she then starts to attract are less welcome. I enjoy the sense of humor and characters in this, despite some issues. – Sean Gaffney

Daytime Shooting Star, Vol. 2 | By Mika Yamamori | VIZ Media – Daytime Shooting Star continues to be far better than it seems like it’s going to be, with a student-teacher romance at its core. The important factor, of course, is that Suzune’s love for Shishio is unrequited, though he does finally become aware of it at the end of this volume. One thing I really love is that there’s drama—Suzune has made friends with Yuyuka (who has a subplot of her own in which she slips up and shows her true belligerent self and gains some masochistic devotees as a result) and is attempting to shield her from the knowledge that the boy Yuyuka likes (Mamura) instead likes Suzune—but no cartoonish, over-the-top villains. There’s just complicated circumstances and likable characters and it’s all really great. I hope it doesn’t spoil it all by doing something stupid like hooking up Suzune and Shishio, at least while she’s still a student. – Michelle Smith

Emanon, Vol. 2: Emanon Wanderer, Part One | By Shinji Kajio and Kenji Tsurata | Dark Horse Comics – This is two large short stories continuing the story of a young woman who has memories going back to the dawn of time. We get a better understanding of what happens when she moves from mother to daughter, and what happens to the mother—it’s disturbing and a bit terrifying, no surprises there. The current Emanon also has a twin brother, something that’s never happened before, and their reunion is as awkward as you can imagine. As for the first story, boy howdy that is a lot of nudity. It’s absolutely gorgeous—the art alone is worth buying this for. But boy howdy, that is an AWFUL lot of nudity. Interested to see where this goes next. – Sean Gaffney

Golden Kamuy, Vol. 11 | By Satoru Noda | Viz Media – This volume gives us the Golden Kamuy equivalent of Bonnie and Clyde in two lovers, now reunited after he gets out of prison, who love to make love and also love to kill people. Naturally, they run afoul of the 7th Division, but the action sequences are absolute gold. Meanwhile, Sugimoto and company are running into a new outlaw running around defiling animals. Biblically. If you’re the sort to be bothered by a two-page spread of a man screwing a deer… well, you likely stopped reading Golden Kamuy long ago, but I feel I should give the warning anyway. It’s also sort of hilarious, like a lot of Golden Kamuy‘s grossest moments. Even for a series that runs on pure “what the hell?” this volume was pretty bonkers. – Sean Gaffney

The Ideal Sponger Life, Vol. 3 | By Tsunehiko Watanabe and Neko Hinotsuki | Seven Seas – Even when our lead couple have successfully coupled, there’s still intrigue. Zenjiro NOT taking a second lover is proving to be, you’ll pardon me, a royal pain, and his pretense (which is somewhat true) that he’s so gaga over Aura that he can’t even look at another woman will only take him so far. Worse, once Aura’s pregnancy gets out, it turns out that Zenjiro’s ancestors may actually ALSO be from this world, which means trouble if the two magical powers combine in their child. Fortunately, our hero is also really good at contractual language, something we rarely see in an isekai. I’ll be honest, this is a LOT more interesting than I was ever expecting. I want more. – Sean Gaffney

Queen Bee, Vol. 1 | By Shizuru Seino | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – I read Seino’s Girl Got Game back in the day, but truth be told, I didn’t like it very much. Queen Bee is definitely an improvement, though I continue to not love Seino-sensei’s approach to zany comedy. (I just think too hard about where random chainsaws came from, for example.) Anyway, the premise here is that Mihane Hirata is an aggressive girl with a scary face who’s in love with the class prince, Toma. He thinks she’s interesting and wants to get to know her, but doesn’t want her for a girlfriend. What I didn’t like was all the background characters who keep popping up to comment about how hideous Mihane is, but what I do like is both Mihane’s self-loathing and Toma’s insistence that she should just be herself. If this were longer, I might pass, but as it’s complete in three volumes, I will probably finish reading it. – Michelle Smith

Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!, Vol. 1 | By Take| Seven Seas – Given the titular heroine, all puns intended, and the fact that the book literally has a raised cover so you can see her boobs stick out, you would think this would in fact be pretty lewd. It’s not. Aside from one or two accidental gropes and a brief shot of Uzaki in the shower, this is not a title about boobs. What is it? Well, picture Teasing Master Takagi-san if she were actually bad at it. Uzaki really likes her sempai and wants to hang out with him all the time. He finds her overeager personality and ludicrous breasts to be rather exhausting, but doesn’t dislike her per se, so they do in fact hang out a lot. Slice-of-life then occurs. If you like that sort of manga, and can tolerate the breasts, this is worth a look. – Sean Gaffney

The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 1 | By Kousuke Oono | Viz Media – One of the manga debuts that I was most looking forward to this year was The Way of the Househusband. The premise is simple enough—a legendary yakuza boss known as The Immortal Dragon has left the underworld behind and now lives a his life as a stay-at-home spouse—but Oono’s execution is brilliant. The intensity, fervor, and complete earnestness of this former yakuza in his approach to household chores, shopping, and all the rest is magnificent to behold. I would certainly be interested in learning more about The Immortal Dragon’s wife and the story behind them settling down into marital bliss, but even if that is never more than hinted at, I expect The Way of the Househusband will continue to be immensely satisfying and ridiculous in the best sort of ways. I was not at all disappointed by the first volume and am eagerly awaiting future installments. – Ash Brown

Seldom has a series won my heart so quickly. It actually wasn’t the “cozy yakuza comedy” aspect, though that offers plenty of amusing scenarios, from Tatsu thoroughly intimidating an unscrupulous door-to-door salesman to drafting rival thugs to help him at a bargain sale to taking cooking lessons with a bunch of ladies to exclaiming “hot damn” over a great deal on cabbage. No, it was the cat, curiously sauntering into the background to survey the goings-on. The kitty has the best reactions (and some bonus chapters of his own). Tatsu’s career-woman/otaku wife Miku is great, too, and I look forward to the story of how they met. This short volume goes by swiftly, but it is quite the treat. – Michelle Smith

Why Shouldn’t a Detestable Demon Lord Fall in Love? Vol. 1 | By Nekomata Nuko and teffish| Sol Press – This book is like just eating pure sugar from the bag. For once the demon lord is the one summoned to another world. He’s fine with that, as a) everyone hated and misunderstood him in his own world, and b) his summoner is a hot young woman raising two cute orphan children. He’s nice. She’s nice. The kids are nice. Even the tsundere kid is really nice. There is an evil lord and his evil assistant, and they are the standard “I have no redeeming features” brand of evil, but you get the sense they were put in by editorial decree. The author just likes writing sweet married life scenes. I don’t know whether this deserves more volumes, but it was pretty good. – Sean Gaffney

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 3 | By Kamome Shirahama | Kodansha Comics – It’s titles like these that make you realize the sorts of things Harry Potter didn’t do. After resolving the cliffhanger of the previous volume, Coco continues to learn how to be a witch, helped by a young man in a potions workshop who can’t see colors, which makes it hard to, well, tell potions apart, as absentminded folks don’t really label them well. He’s a smart cookie, though, and shows her a shortcut that might help save her mother. Meanwhile, a lot of forces are making things more difficult for her—both actual antagonists, giving her secret powerful ink, or her own teacher, who may be more of a smiling villain than anything else. One of the best new titles this year. – Sean Gaffney
