It's you and Kou's first date, how will it go?

You stood in front of the mirror in your room, Nene at your side. She was digging through your closet and drawers, looking for the best outfit.

You had asked her for help since her first date with Amane was a success (😏)

"Nene-chan, I'm nervous. What if he doesn't like how I look? Or what if I mess up and make things awkward? What if-?"

"Y/N-chan, calm down. You'll be fine!" She handed you a (f/c) knee-length dress. "Now try this on!"

I stood at the entrance of the park where Kou and I were supposed to meet. With Nene's help, I was able to put together a cute first date fit.

A (f/c) knee-length dress with ruffles at the bottom, a small black cross purse, and (c/c) ankle boots.

I enter the park and look around. Kids running around, adults sitting and conversing, families having picnics, but between all this, I managed to find him. My breathing hitched in my throat, he looked breathtaking (literally).

He was wearing (whatever you imagine cuz I'm too lazy). Once he noticed me, his smile widened, and he waved me over.

"You look beautiful!" I could feel my cheeks heating up, he never fails to fluster me.

"Thank you! You look really handsome too, Kou-kun!" His eyes widened and a light blush coated his cheeks.

"Th-thanks.."

WHY IS HE SO CUTE?! THIS IS ILLEGAL!

We walked around the park, where a spring festival was being held. Mostly gossiping conversing, we only stopped at a few game booths. (I swear, somewhere along the way, I saw the same bright blonde hair and glowing blue eyes following us!)

I looked at his hand, the urge to hold it growing, but what if he didn't like it? What if I was going to fast?

I tried to reach my hand to hold his, only to stop myself last second when he started explaining something to me. I paid attention to him, trying to forget my failed mission.

Another time, I tried to grab his hand, only for him to move a bit. Well, that was embarrassing. At least he didn't notice.

"Oh, hey! Look! Dango!" Kou exclaimed. "Do you want some?"

"Oh, sure!" I smile at him.

I stayed where I was, beside some tree, as the blonde boy went to buy us each a Dango stick.

As he walked back, I couldn't help but stare (I mean, who can? He's too pretty). The way his blonde hair moved in the wind as he walked. The way his bright blue eyes shined like blue sapphire under the sun. I didn't even notice I was staring until he placed the Dango stick in front of my face, "Here you go!" He said, a bright smile on his face.

"O-oh, thanks," I take the dango from him as we start our wandering trip again. Kou was talking about something, and I was half paying attention to what he said when he suddenly, but smoothly, slides his hand onto mine, intertwining our fingers.

I glance down at our hands, than back up at his face. The young male was looking to the other side, while still going on about something that happened at school to Yokoo, Satou, and Mitsuba completely unfazed. And here I was, a blushing mess.

Well, at least, Mission: First Date was a success.

Hanako is known to be pervert and make pervy comments to tease, and you were his favorite to tease

He anted to make you crack in a way, you were never bother by his comments and instead joked back which he absolutely loved but he also wanted to make you flustered and shy at least once

“Oh looky here [name]!” He said with a giggle as he held up some handcuffs and rope he picked up from a drawer while trying to find parts to make a body

Kou and Yashiro understood what he meant, Yashiro looked the other way while Kou called him a sicko with a red face

You smiled at hanako and laughed, “Oh wow Hanako! I didn’t know you were into that, I don’t judge though!” You said and it only made Hanako feel shy instead of you

He loves how you never get mad at his jokes and if you ever make a perverted joke, he falls so hard

You were sitting down on the bathroom floor, you were stuck on a question for physics. It was only you and Hanako in the girls bathroom and Hanako leaned over to see what you were doing and giggled

"You're stuck on a question? Come on! It doesn't even look that hard!" he remarked with a laugh and pressing his finger into your cheek to annoy you

You huffed and waved his finger away "If you're so confident then why don't you help me solve it and I'll consider giving you a treat after." you winked at him after, making him look at you in awe and red cheeks.

Hanako immediately got to work and instructed you how to solve it, hoping that you stay true to your word and give him a prize after. He can feel himself get all giddy and red at the thought of it

I really loved writing this, it was pretty funny and interesting

Teru Minamoto

For being a supernatural that has to make a deal with someone to deploy your power you were wandering around pretty bored, searching for a perfect candidate, just making some mischief here and there, bothering a little the humans and supernatural that cross in your way

And what you have done has caught the attention of the family of exorcist Minamoto, even if you wouldn't doing anything Teru wouldn't let you alone, his work as the leader of the clan Minamoto is to exorcising all the supernaturals he find, besides he despises them

The first moment you two meet is when Teru attacked you without warning and with all his strenght, not letting you too much time to defend yourself, barely managing to escape with some tricks, leaving you frustrated for what happened, and Teru is too, he is furious that a supernatural managed to escape from him

Trying to take revenge or go against him won't be a really smart move since he is a really good and experienced exorsist, and since without making a deal with someone you are pretty weak you are in a clear disadvantage, it wouldn't be that way if you can deceive him and make him believe that you have all your power but is more likely that he already knows about your limitations (and if not he will find out soon)

Next time Teru even just see you he imediatly tries to attack you, but you always manage to escape (not without badly injuries) just to leave him more frustrated and angry. Since then you become constant target for Teru you have no other option to just run away and hide, you know it would be imposible now make a deal with someone since just by trying it he will exterminate you before you have the opportunity to even offer the deal

All this situation is so humiliating and shameful for the prideful you, so you start to work on your revenge, prying even the smallest details about him in hopes to find something that could help you gain an edge. In the other hand Teru wasn't better, every time you manage to scape just frustrate him more and more, how a stupid supernatural such as yourself manage to go away from him like this (even Akane can tell how frustrate he is, but he won't ask he isn't that stupid to do so)

Both of you prepare yourselfs to the next time you two fight, getting ready to give everything to be the one who end up being victorious, although the next time you two fight end being pretty much the same, both having his own way to fight and non of you willing to give up just end up on you escaping (but this time you weren't the only one injured)

What started full with hate and frustration quickly become a rivality with lots of motivation, both wanting to be the one who defeat the other and unconsciously helping each other to become stronger (it also gets pretty scary for whoever see you two being so motivated), as strange as it sounds both of you become rivales in a more honorable way

It get to the point that you approached to him to express your bloodlust against him and this time he didn't attack you imediatly, on the contrary he express the same against you, and that wasn't the only time, from time to time one of you approach the other to exchange some words (mainly to mess and tease the hell of each other)

However, Teru keep this as a secret for the sake of the honor of his family, the only people who he will let know (and yet hesitantly) is Kou or maybe Akane, and both will be shocked that Teru is "getting along" with a supernatural.

Also, it could happen that, since your relationship grow the one whit a rivality more settle and honorable, they end up seeing the two of you together, Teru won't say much or make a big deal of it (specially if is Akane who see the two of you), but if you try to say anything about it he imediatly goes against you and attack you, not with all his strenght though is more like a warning (because knowing you, you probably will try to make it seems like a friendship)

Teru will never admit it, let alone to you, but he grows to like the relationship you two have because with all the fights he has become even more stronger, not just physical but mentally too since he had to come up with differents ways to deal with you, besides even when he always says that you are annoying as hell you make things a little more funny

Is not probably, but he will be really mad if someone else manage to exterminate you before him, you two have a rivality and no one should interpose (and won't try to hide it, glaring angrily at the person without saying anything)

Hanako-kun

In the Kamome Academy there is a lot of spiritial energy since there is not just the seven misteries but also some other supernatunals, so having curiosity for that place won't be too strange

One day you just decided to give a try and visit the place, wandering around just seeing the students go by and searching for the others supernatunals. By the first moment you enter in the academy Hanako has know about your presence, and even when you were just chilling around the school he was very wary of you

It get the point that either you discover him stalking you or that he himself approached to you to introduced himself, at first he was very cheerful and polite, but you can easily tell that he is still wary of you, and he wasn't too bad on distrusting you, being a supernatural who seeks to make less than fair deals with others is pretty dangerous and he is in charge of protecting the place and the order between humans and supernaturals, so is just natural on him

Just take him one time seeing you trying to make a deal with someone to fully distrust you and keep an eye on you whenever you are in the academy, he tried to fight against you at the very moment since you were being a threat but you managed to get away with some trick and no matter how much times he tries to stop you somehow you always manage to get away from him, that frustrate the hell of him

For that reason you two end up having to pass a lot of time together and he ends up disliking your only presence a lot, making it worst knowing the little to nothing respect you have for human lifes or how you just use them to have fun. For a while your relasionship just goes from following you to make sure you don't cause problems to fighting with words and even physically from time to time

Since he doesn't let you do almost nothing you just start to have fun with him, messing with him, jokinly threatening him with doing something or teasing him with whatever you can (specially with the fact that he can't go outside the academy, but he always give it back saying that you are pretty usless without making a deal)

He never really trusted you around humans so when you get to know Yashiro and Kou (because is imposible for you to don't meet them one way or another, specially for how he care for them) he make you keep a distance from them and get really protective over them, Hanako even warned them about you when you weren't there (making them pretty scare of you in the process by accident)

The thing is that after spending so much time messing with Hanako you had just forget your goal of managing to make a deal and take advantage with someone and just started to focuse on him, you were having so much fun by even just spending time with him that you let pose a threat long ago, just going out of the school to mess with him too, but Hanako couldn't know because he is too blinded by the first impresion you gave to him, too worried that you will harm someone

Getting to be friends with Yashiro and Kou will be difficult since Hanako has warned them about you, but it isn't imposible, it just have to happen outside of the school (although with Kou is still pretty difficult since he come from a family of exorcists). When Hanako notice that they started to get along with you he is mixed between feeling betrayal and worried sick for them, making it worst when they try to explain him that you aren't that bad (or at least not anymore)

At the end has to be Tsuchigomori who make him realice that you had changed, one day while Hanako were complaining about you he point out how you had stoped wander around the school like a predator and just focused on him with joy all over your face, he may even dare to say that there is some care too

Flustered, Hanako will be thinking on it for a while, at the end he get the conclution that you actually changed, he still doesn't fully trust you but he is willing to give you an opportunity. The next time he has the opportunity he will talk to you, he shyly apologize for treating you so bad when you already changed, however you just laugh at his words calling him silly for being so worried, after all if he wasn't so wary of you it wouldn't have been so funny mess with him

From then you start to win Hanako's trust little by little, and even when he get more comfortable around you your relationship still doesn't change much keeping messing with each other but this time in a more friendly and playful way (although Hanako tries avoid by all means you meeting Tsukasa since knowing how much you two like messing with him that would just end in disaster)

he finds your hobby really interesting and adorable, you have a lot of talent and itʼs good that you practice everyday.

sometimes, when you have nothing to do, he invites you to the students council room and makes you sit beside him, he likes the silence thereʼs in the room while you draw whatever is on your mind while he finishes his work.

his grades are excellent so of course he shines in art class, he gives really good advices on how you can get better with your art, drawing / painting with him is really fun and relaxing.

if you gift him a drawing of him or you two together heʼll make sure to put it in a frame, beside the pictures with his siblings so he can see it everyday; heʼll praise you a lot and maybe gift you a drawing as well, as a thank you.

akane aoi

heʼs literally your number one supporter, always been since the start, he definitely takes pictures to every single drawing u make, even if itʼs just one doodle on the end of your note book or on your arm.

talking about doodling on someoneʼs skin, he will scream like a fan girl if you ask to draw on his arm, it could be anything really: smiling faces, lil shining stars, flowers.. he will cherish them till they completely faid away when heʼs washing himself up he will be sad about it too.

i wouldnʼt try to ask him for suggestions on how to make your art better though, he will always compliment whatever you draw, even if itʼs just a literal stick men, he cannot manage to criticize you and your art.

believe me when i say he will go feral if you draw him or both of you together. Imagine handing him a small drawing of you two holding hands w little hearts as decorations, and each second his face gets more and more red.. heʼll probably stick it to his ceiling, right in front of his bed so that it will be the first thing he sees in the morning and last thing he sees before closing his eyes to sleep.

i think she'd be really amused about the fact that you both like art and spend most of your days drawing, you both support and help eachother when the other needs help or suggestions.

since you two share the same passion, expect to do some works together with shijima, maybe like you both seat in front of eachother and draw the other or draw shared parts of a singular painting, you know things like that if you understood.. where you both have fun.

Hello!!!

I am going to preface this with the fact that I only got into anime around 2014/2015 (Fullmetal Alchemist + Brotherhood) and then read the manga around 2016.

I only started avidly reading around 2019 with digital copies of JoJo and fell into loving manga from there and genuinely becoming a reader/keeping up with new releases and starting to learn Japanese (basic hiragana, etc) in 2021.

My other qualifications for these picks are that I am an irl artist (illustration and stained glass), taught an art history course for 1 year, and I read/write as much as possible outside of work.

I will also say that I may not have finished reading all these series yet, but they are the ones near and dear to my art-loving heart.

Also sorry it’s a few more than 10 *sweats*

Fullmetal Alchemist — Hiromu Arakawa

My very first manga.

Knowing that Arakawa taught herself art while still working on her parents’ farm and used her nights/time off to write it made me so in awe of her drive and skills. The ways the story deals with humanity, war, power, and love make it a timeless classic.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure — Hirohiko Araki

It’s bonkers. It’s off the wall. It’s been going since the 80’s and Araki is still working. There’s so much to love. There’s so much to hate. But no matter how you feel about JJBA, it’s undeniably a masterpiece.

Araki’s dedication to the art is one of the biggest draws, with his fashion and art history references and use of bright colors. You can feel his love for the medium shine through his full color pieces!

My personal favorite parts are Phantom Blood, Diamond Is Unbreakable, Stone Ocean, and Jojolion (ikik all the “boring” parts, but I think that’s where the characters are most interesting)

Jujutsu Kaisen -- Gege Akutami

My next big read after JoJo. After watching season 1 of the anime, I knew I needed more. The way that Gege uses the classic shonen tropes combined with explorations of life and death is very strong storytelling.

We learn from the start about curses, cursed energy, we witness a major death in the protagonist’s life and he’s given a goal:

“You’re a strong kid, so help others. Even if it’s only those closest to you, just save the people you can. It’s okay if you lose your way, and don’t worry about whether they’ll thank you or not. Just save as many people as you can, even if it’s only one.”

The series often shows us what it means to save even one and the self sacrifice that comes from protecting others, even if it’s painful or difficult. Throw iconic characters into the mix and you have the basis for an already notable classic shonen manga.

Spy x Family — Tatsuya Endo

Found family slice of life with a big dose of action and fluff?? Literally the perfect comfort manga. I saw enough promos on tumblr that I finally caved and started it in 2020 and I LOVED it.

More people are familiar now bc of the anime’s popularity, but I definitely recommend reading it as well! The art is consistently high quality, the face expressions are hilarious, and the main concept of fighting for peace is re-stated throughout the storyline.

Loid took on this mission and his spy position to bring peace. He never wants to see the horrors of war again. He never wants to see another child cry. The family may be “fake” but the feelings are real.

Witch Hat Atelier — Kamome Shirahama

I cannot stop giving high praises for this series!!!! It’s like if you mixed Ghibli’s nature and art with Narnia or LOTR’s fantasy vibes. The magic system is based on drawing and it’s such a treat for artists to read.

Shirahama also uses a lot of traditional art references for her work, like rococo, art nouveau, classic illustration, etc. She’s won awards for the series and every one is deserved.

Also the two main witches, Qifrey and Olruggio, are definitely in love and take the best care of their witch students (cough daughters) in the atelier. Qifrey is like if you mixed Howl Pendragon with Gojo Satoru. Olruggio is the traditional tsundere with a heart of gold.

The series also talks a lot about disability and how we can improve others’ lives to make them more comfortable and accessible! It’s a very unique world and story that draws you in and makes you feel at home.

Chainsaw Man — Tatsuki Fujimoto

Yes, the series everyone is currently talking about. And I’m not going to call it peak or goat, but I think the concept is very strong and well-executed.

Fujimoto pulls you in from the intro (esp Pochita, how can you not love a cute little chainsaw dog!?), he makes you care about the characters, and slowly rips your heart out chapter by chapter. It’s won awards for good reason.

Not everyone is morally black and white. There’s giant battles and dynamic art. The main character just wants to touch some boobs. The other main guy is basically a househusband after work hours. Add in a pretty girl blood devil who doesn’t like vegetables. An Angel Devil who can kill someone through a touch and loves ice cream. A sopping wet kitten of a girl who works at her family’s burger place and hunts devils on the side. etc etc.

The characters are one of the strongest aspects of Chainsaw Man and their dynamics with each other. Hate, love, control, fear… The series talks about our basest desires and anxieties and explores them in a fictional playing field with all the flare you expect from a Shonen Jump title.

Toilet Bound Hanako Kun - AidaIro

THE ART STYLE THE ART STYLE THE ART STLYE. This series is done by a two person team (AidaIro - one for art, one for writing) and I appreciate that each brings their strength to this manga.

The coloring and art are so dreamy and whimsical, while still using strong jewel tone colors (instead of only pastels or earth colors as you might expect in a western fantasy series).

The work uses the “seven school wonders” as its base and Nene Yashiro as the protagonist who just wanted to get a date with her crush and called on Hanako’s help. Through her impulsivity, she ends up under a mermaid’s curse and makes a pact with Hakano to make it more bearable, getting pulled into the carryings-on of spirits around the school.

The art/story combo is engaging, dynamic, and emotional. There’s a lot of hilarious face expressions in this manga as well and little visual gags/jokes that make it fun to read. The series started in 2014 and is still ongoing!

The Way of the Househusband — Kosuke Oono

a former yakuza member marries a designer and becomes a stay at home househusband. Hijinks ensue. Add in his former gang friend Masa and their cat Gin and you have a recipe for domestic comedy.

I’ve genuinely laughed out loud so many times reading this manga. The chapters are pretty short and are good when you need a little break to not stare at a screen. It’s another good comfort manga when you need something low intensity.

Dorohedoro -- Q Hayashida

I have to admit I found this one because of the anime MAPPA did, but I immediately explored the manga and mud and sludge art book. Q Hayashida trained in fine arts before becoming a mangaka and it shows through the quality of her work.

From the heavily detailed manga panels, to the mixed media covers, and bonus comics done in color, the world is rendered in a blend of gritty realism and surreal fantasy.

Dorohedoro is one of the most unique pieces of worldbuilding I’ve encountered, with the smoke magic system, use of doors for traveling between Hole and the sorcerers world, as well as including devils in the lore.

Again, characters are a big draw of the series, but the art is just mind blowing to me as an artist, knowing the level of craft she put into them. I still flip through the artbook for inspiration when I’m feeling drained.

I haven’t finished all of the manga, but I’m slowly collecting the volumes (some are out of print). But I believe all the pdfs are up on archive.org (also please keep in mind there is an Adult Only/18+ content warning on this manga as there is gore and some nudity)

Blue Period — Tsubasa Yamaguchi

I started collecting this when they released volume 1 and just kept collecting. If you’re an artist at all or appreciate art, this is a series for you. It describes the struggles of finding your voice as an artist so deeply and you will feel understood and seen.

There are quite a few characters in the series, so I suggest looking at the wiki for this one to keep everyone straight. I also recommend watching the anime, as the colors and voices help distinguish the characters further.

The art history references in the chapter art makes this a scavenger hunt for art nerds and the messages of self searching, acceptance, and discovery are something anyone can relate to. (edit: I looked up the series more and it's another woman author!! :D )

The Case Study of Vanitas — Jun Mochizuki

Another I started collecting because of the anime, but it’s SO so beautiful (Arakawa sensei even gave a recommendation inside the front cover of volume 1!)

Also!!! Another woman author!! I’m so happy to give lots of women author recs. If you like gothic romantic vampire dramas set in alt history steampunk Paris with a dash of horror, then this is for you.

Bisexual vibes from literally all of the main 4 (Noe, Vanitas, Dominique, Jeanne). Some moments of sensuality, but it never goes into overtly sexual, making it more accessible for teen readers.

Her watercolors are instantly recognizable and stunningly gorgeous. Noe’s delight in the world is balanced by Vanitas’ grumpier realism. Also, the concept of a vampire that can read memories through blood blew my mind. Definitely recommend.

Special mentions:

Yotsuba&! (a classic first manga for kids. Heartwarming. Funny. Adorable)

Skull Face Bookseller Honda-san (also a good anime. Only 4 volumes. All the crazy things that happen in a bookstore/publishing. Funny and a great autobiography by the author Honda)

Kaiju No. 8 (an up and coming Shonen Jump that’s already slated for an anime!!!! Kaiju battle action + a 32 year old protag that had an accident while working and can now turn into a Kaiju >:D Monster lovers rejoice)

I also have a few singles of older shojo manga that I’m getting into recently like Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Kitchen Princess, Host Club!

Kou Minamoto

Is immediately put off by what you’re saying and is immediately concerned, and gets even more concerned once you get together and just stares nervously at you while stuttering, not knowing what to say

“That’s so embarrassing, if that were me I would kill myself no doubt! Being so stupid like that, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself!” You casually said while looking at a post on your phone.

“O-oh… umm…” Kou is at a loss for words sometimes and tries to brush it off by moving onto something happier to distract you from thoughts like those

When you make a joke that’s one day too far he genuinely seems so much more concerned and ask if you’re okay. He gets so worried about you that it’s best not to make jokes like that near him.

If you don’t show up the next day, he gets worried and is immediately trying to leave school early even though he knows Teru will berate him later for it, he needs to see you’re okay and when he arrives to your house and sees you are, he’s very serious about not making jokes like those again and is invites you to his house more often to distract yourself and is willing to help you get help

Teru Minamoto

Gives you a nervous smile when you joke about suicide and even when you you’re dating he still gives you an obvious fake smile to not hurt your feelings. He knows that outright saying that if you need someone talk to talk to can be annoying sometimes so he’ll try to subtly let you know he’s there

Whether it’s from talking about a topic of a documentary of a tragic life of some celebrity and all they needed help to having Kou telk you that you’re part of the family and that you can tell them anything when you’re over at their house

“I can’t stop messing this up! God I really should’ve taken those pills when I had the chance, what the hell!” You said angrily at the fact you couldn’t get the string through the small hole in the needle.

Teru could only smile at you, he never says anything to your ‘jokes’, but then he stops and just goes to frowning hoping that you’re not being serious

When you don’t show up the next day, he’s not super worried and just assumes you’re late but sends you messages. But after a few hours the messages become more frequent and by the end of the school day he’s running to your house scared. When he sees you’re alright, he’s pissed and says enough is enough and he’s not taking anymore jokes and is instead going to help you

Hanako

He might laugh at your jokes, but it’s only so he doesn’t worry you. He’s not an unfamiliar when it comes to stuff like this and he knows you might now want to talk about it right away so he’s fine with trying to take it slow

On the inside though, his ghostly heart is scared that you’re it joking and you’re actually being serious. He can’t bear the thought of you dying—and especially dying this way so he keeps a close eye on you and has Kou and Yashiro even make sure that you’re doing okay

“God, I’m so stupid and useless” you say with a laugh as you look at your test result and shove the paper back in your bag

Hanako stares at you, and lets out a laugh that’s believe enough. He’s conflicted on what he should do, should he ask how you’re doing? What if you lie to him? Would you even want to talk to him?

It seems as if his worries have come true when you didn’t show up to school the next day and asks if Yashiro or Kou have seen you at all and to message you on those weird electronic things. Yashiro only agrees to go to your house when Hanako asked because she too was worried about you. Hanako waits impatiently the next day and sees you and you tell him you were just feeling sick. If he could, then Hanako would definitely cry and basically forces you to promise to tell him if anything is wrong with a scared and worried expression on his face

Akane Aoi

You’re the most precious person in his life so he takes everything very serious when it comes to you. A paper cut? He’s getting ready to call an ambulance for you and is frantically asking you if you’re okay.

So joking about such topics near him immediately alarms him and hea on full protective mode with asking if you’re joking or not. He takes everything you say seriously, he cares about you a lot so to see you laugh about it, hurts him a little

“What if I jump out this window right now? I really do want to do this test!” You whined and looked over at the window that was right next to where you were sitting.

Akane had a prominent frown on his face, he knew you weren’t exactly mentally okay and you’re jokes were becoming more and more frequent

He’s on full panic mode when you don’t show up to school the next day and the worst possible outcomes are immediately coming to mind. He hopes he’s wrong and is blowing up your phone and is willing to mess up his perfect attendance streak for you, he’ll fix it later. But when he sees you overslept and your phone died because wig wasn’t charged, he’s disappointed. He knew it was getting worse if you dying was what came to mind when you didn’t show up so he pledges to help you
