We still have a land line telephone, though we both have cell phones as well. The home phone is inundated with calls from telemarketers, which is annoying at best. I get the idea, that it's a job for somebody, but I don't entertain the idea of doing any business, I didn't initiate, with strangers over the telephone. Another weird thing is that often when we answer the phone and say hello, there is nothing from the other end - quiet. Lately, I've taken up a tactic that I use when I don't recognize a number and I get a call ID description of wireless caller or out of area. I answer the phone as:" Alfred's Unicycle Universe."

HBO's docuseries chronicling the multibillion dollar industry of scamming citizens over the phone under the guise of fundraising money for charities illuminates viewers on many aspects of telemarketing across several years from the inside. Lipman-Stern uses his own archival amateur home video footage from his time working in these dubious offices alongside criminals, convicts, and the generally unemployable. It's ultimately a grim outlook into American scammer culture thriving with little incentive for anyone to dismantle or regulate its successful Wild West business model.

some scam number called me and just for fun I picked up the phone, listened to the busy call center background noise for a second & then said conversationally, 'It's LOUD wherever you are, 'and the guy said 'ugh dammit' and hung up on me without saying another word

Me: *Doing stuff at my late grandmother’s apartment when the phone rings.*

Man on Phone: *Gives me a spiel* If we were to send you an envelope, would you make a donation through the mail?

Me: Well, this number is my grandmother’s who recently passed. I’m only here to do- 

Man on Phone: Is the man or woman of the house available?

Me: ...No. Because my grandmother recently passed. No one lives here and this number probably won’t be used anymore-

Man on Phone: Ok I will call back later. *Hangs up*

Me: ...What.

Fucking debt collectors are realizing they have to be smart for us to answer the phone...

they started calling from my local area code somehow (not this particular call tho. This one I was hoping was for a job...)

I answered, LONG delay (which is always a sign), and they asked if I was who I was. I asked what it's about, knowing anything collections wise I would hang up on, and they said 'it's concerning a business matter.'

HA. I don't have stocks, investments, extra money...so any business would be on your end, to your benefit.

So I hung up immediately.

Fuck telemarketers and debt collectors. YOU BOTH WORK FOR SOME OF THE MOST EVIL COMPANIES ON THE PLANET!
