Movie Review | Mr. Mom (Dragoti, 1983)

Given the 1983 release date, I was hoping that this would have a bit of grit or edge to it. Knocking back some beers, dropping a few swears, flipping people off, he’s Mr. Mom, man. 

Yeah, I don’t know where I got that idea because this is pretty milquetoast when it isn’t being overly cartoony. I guess there are limits to how edgy a movie about a guy who stays at home all day to look after his kids can be, but imagine if like Eddie Murphy had played Mr. Mom during this era. He definitely would have dropped a few swears. Unless he went all Golden Child, in which case, this would have been a snoozefest. I think Michael Keaton is a little too nice here, and between this and finding him pretty whatever as Batman, I have to concede that he’s not my guy. 

Anyway, this is diverting enough. Whatever my qualms with Keaton, he and Teri Garr do what’s asked of them pretty well, and Keaton gets to kick a little ass when he tells off and later punches out Jeffrey Tambor. (He’s Mr. Mom, man.) There are also hints of racier material when the possibilities of extramarital affairs present themselves, but the protagonists are too fundamentally good to be seriously tempted. And while things reset at the end, the movie is less reactionary than you’d expect when exploring the relationship between gender roles and the workplace.

Can you top this? Yes, we can. How the hell is it possible that this sitdown with The Sopranos Richie Aprile aka David Proval, will go down as one of the most entertaining shows yet? It shall. WOW. What fun. Great stories. Crazy coincidences. More great stories.

As if it wasn’t enough that David’s mother and I share the same family name,    and she has the same country of origin as my grandma with the same name, we’re both New Yorkers, David went to Yeshiva, my father taught Yeshiva, our paths crossing about a decade ago while filming Henry Jaglom’s The M Word with Michael Imperioli, post their work in The Sopranos, pre ours at Women Who Write and Game Changers. 

Thanks to the suggestion of my new good friend, Mark Metcalf, who also middled last week’s stupendous sitdown with Tim Matheson, I know David’s extensive body of stellar work, Mark added technicolor. I jumped at his suggestion to invite David. My gratitude to both of them is boundless. What fun! I know I said it before, but it bears repeating.

From his grandma and the Yiddish theatre, school plays, Uta Hagen, to Scorcese and Mean Streets, thanks to his friend, Jon Voight, how he got it—DeNiro, Keitel, Pavlo Hummel, again thanks to Voight, which led to Nunzio, a hysterical story about filming with Jack Gilford, Elliot Gould, and James Caan, which included more great stories about James, to the other James… Gandolfini. David’s audition(s) for The Sopranos, so much great stuff there, moving from mobster Richie Aprile to a Rabbi in The West Wing, Teri Garr, Richard Dreyfus, coaching Eddie Murphy, an insanely great story there, a Drama Desk Nomination, Innocent Blood, John Landis, Don Rickels, hysterical stuff there, meeting Sinatra, and sitting down with him, a fan, wow, Everybody Loves Raymond, Italy, and his personal discontent… all straight talk, with loads of laughter and a few tears. I loved every single second, especially when his wife of 46 years, Cheryl, joined the conversation from the other room. 

Forget cowbell. More David Proval!

More Than A Dozen Swimmers Plus Two Coaches At International Meet In South Korea

The World Championships for swimming gets underway this weekend in Gwangju, South Korea, and Cal will be well-represented throughout the weeklong competition with more than a dozen Golden Bears slated to race in the water. In addition, David Durden is serving as head coach of the U.S. men's team and Teri McKeever is an assistant for the U.S. women.

Team USA features eight swimmers with Cal ties, with five on the men's side and three for the women, and almost all have previous World Championships experience. Other Bears will be donning caps for their home countries from Egypt, Spain, Hong Kong, Croatia and Singapore.

Nathan Adrian is the most decorated member of the group, having claimed 13 World Championships medals and eight Olympic medals during his career. He is competing at the world meet for the sixth time and earned four medals the last time the event was held in 2017 – gold in the 400 free relay, 400 medley relay and 400 mixed medley relay, and silver in the 100 free.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy qualified to swim all three backstroke distances – 50, 100 and 200 meters – and will likely be on the medley relay. This summer marks his third world meet, and he enters the 2019 competition with six all-time medals – three gold, two silver and a bronze. Two years ago, Murphy claimed gold on the 400 medley relay and 400 mixed medley relay, silver in the 200 back and bronze in the 100 back.

Kathleen Baker has a trio of World Championships medals to her credit – gold in the 400 medley relay, silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 back, all from 2017 – and this marks her third all-time appearance at the meet. She's scheduled to compete in all three backstroke events this year.

The rest of Cal's lineup on the U.S. squad features Katie McLaughlin, Jacob Pebley, Josh Prenot, Andrew Seliskar, and Abbey Weitzeil.

Those representing foreign teams include: Farida Osman (Egypt), Camille Cheng and Stephanie Au (Hong Kong), Marina Garcia (Spain), Ema Rajic (Croatia) and Zheng Wen Quah (Singapore).

This is the last part of my Olympics trilogy, as it was just too longer a list to put into one post - here we go from shooting (smh) to Wrestling. I hope you have been having a great Olympiad!

Shooting - books tend to be about the aftermath, not actually about this I'm finding and honestly it has just led me to articles on gun control and why it needs to happen. Go read this article at The Atlantic 'The Constitutional Argument for Gun Control' please.

Skateboarding - Honestly, I can't wait to see this. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 has so much to answer for, my music taste for one and dammit, I am glad we now have more than Elissa Steamer representing women, she really paved the way. Honestly, this list from Skateism is so good and I highly recommend reading it.

Rock Climbing - I would highly recommend 'The Art of Holding On and Letting Go' by Kristin Bartley Lenz or if you want a classic then maybe give a try 'The Ascent of Rum Doodle' by William Ernest Bowman - a book about some very hapless mountaineers.

Surfing - Dude. I don't know what to put here but I will suggest, 'Girl Out Of Water' by Laura Silverman, if you're from the UK, 'Grey Skies, Green Waves' and 'And One Would Think The Deep' by Claire Zorn.

Swimming - I would recommend a book about the history of Swimming, 'Splash!' which is a history of humanity going swimming and a perfectly fitting book to read while taking in this sport. Michael Phelps would be proud of you.

Table Tennis - You know, thanks to table tennis, China begun a detente with the US? Amazing really. You can read all about it in 'Ping-Pong Diplomacy: Ivor Montagu and the Astonishing Story Behind the Game That Changed the World' - which is by far the most interesting book about this sport I've found.

Taekwondo - I didn't find many books on this subject unless it was teaching you how to do it which I really would recommend going to a teacher to do and then picking one up, safety first. But I did find this really interesting article on the Guardian about Dina Nayeri who through Taekwondo ended up at Harvard after being a refugee to the USA.

Tennis - You can find a whole list of book recommendations on goodreads here, but Annie LaMott's Crooked Little Heart seems to be the most recommended book about tennis.

Track Cycling - Considering how good GB are at going in circles at very fast speeds, there is no fiction about this so far, not even a cheeky little romance. I really find the races exciting, especially Keirin and Omnium and I highly recommend you give it a look if you can during the games, you'll be amazed.

Trampolining - it's an excellent metaphor for things, but I can't find a book about one, unless you include 'Teri, the Trampoline Fairy'. I mean I'm not sure you're a person if you've not got a fairy named after you to be honest. For those who are curious, I'm the violin fairy.

Triathlon - I mean, yeah tough call.

Water Polo - There are books in the goodreads search I now want to unsee thanks to this sport. Just go read 'Sam and The Sea Monsters' and we will never speak of this again.

Weightlifting - I couldn't find many books on this, however I would check out this article on Literary Hub about Oliver Sacks and the impact of Weightlifting on his writing and how sport can impact an author's work. It's interesting.

Wrestling - The Wrestler's Wrestler by Dan Murphy comes to mind. I recently was lucky enough to read this before publishing and it covers an incredible array of wrestlers and brilliant Olympian wrestlers too.

I bought these books a while ago from charity shops before my country went back into lockdown again. I adore shopping at charity shops and secondhand bookshops as I’m usually able to find books I haven’t seen anywhere else for a really good price. It’s interesting trying to work out the history of the books too, in this haul there are a couple of retired library books and one was given to someone as a reward. It gives them a lot of character! In the mood for a bit of silliness, but I need to set this Youtube clip up for you youngsters in the crowd.

Roosevelt “Rosey” Grier was one of the top NFL football stars of the 1960s. He also dabbled in a number of other fields including needlepoint and music. He had a few hit records, and one of them was “Since You’ve Been Gone”, an R&B tune he put out in the mid-60s. He appeared to perform it on the show Shindig and he brought along several of his fellow NFL players to do background dancing. The one on the far left is Merlin Olsen, who became an actor some years later, appearing on Little House on the Prairie and Father Murphy, among other shows of the 80s. The other two are Deacon Jones and Lamar Lundy who were also top of their fields in sports.

Not necessarily dancing, mind you. Rosey does a great job, but the “Fearsome Foursome” on this show had more in common with “Left Shark” than “backfield in motion”. But I love this clip because it’s just plain fun and raises a smile. At least it does for me.

For those folks interested in such things, one of the dancers in the back row is Teri Garr, who later became an actress appearing in shows such as Star Trek TOS, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Young Frankenstein and Mr. Mom. The backing singers are the Blossoms, featuring Darlene Love (middle), who is a legend in her own right and the Blossoms backed countless performers (let’s just start and end the list with Elvis).
