Post By:BookGirl This past weekend the St. Louis County Library and local book store the Novel Neighbor teamed up to put on the, first ever, St. Louis Teen Book Festival. Having never put on an event like this before they were not sure what to expect but with over 400 people in attendance I would call the event a huge success. Summary: After Aila Quinn’s mother dies and her father is drafted into the war, she and her younger brother, Miles, are sent to Sterling, where mysteries abound. Every seven years, the experiences people take most for granted — smells, reflections, even the ability to dream — disappear, and the next time is coming up. Now, Aila has to figure out the truth from the clues her mother left behind, and why the rural town is so convinced her mother was somehow responsible for its misfortunes.
Favorite Quote: “But just before he’s hoisted into the air and carried away, he searches through the crowd until he catches sight of me. Grins until his crooked tooth shows. And I think that for the rest of my life I will never forget this night — when under an empty ink sky, a boy who shone brighter than the stars stopped long enough to smile at me.”
Thoughts: Amazing, astounding, all the good words. I loved this so much. If you’re into magical realism, then this is for you. If you’re into solving mysteries, then this is for you (because there are quite a few twists and turns throughout the book). This might be the fastest I’ve finished a book in a while, and that’s just great. The author got me to really care about the characters, which isn’t something I can say for all. I guess I’m just gushing about this book right here because there’s literally no place else for me to do so, and I’m about to burst with all the praises I have for it.

This book is overflowing with breathtaking beauty. I was hooked in from the very first page to the last, unable to put the book down. It's as carefully crafted as a snowflake, and it's magical, enigmatic, and utterly addictive. Emily Bain Murphy work piques my interest, and I'd like to read more from her.
If you're seeking for a good winter read, I recommend Emily Bain Murphy's #splintersofscarlet . It occurs in the winter, and the book's tone perfectly represents the season.

The Disappearances Review
Tumblr media
Rating: 5 out of 5
Dates: March 15, 2020 to March 20, 2020
This book is not at all what I thought it was. I thought this book was about missing teens, which is 100% incorrect. That is what I get for not looking closely at the description.
This book is a historical fiction that is about the disappearances of things we take for granted. From smells to stars, things have gone missing from the people of this book. After figuring out quickly this book was not at all what I thought it was, I was excited to see where it took me. For once, I knew almost nothing going in.
The mystery behind it and the ties to Shakespeare makes this book worth reading. I had theories about what caused the disappearances but I never even got close. I honestly wouldn’t mind reading this book again later in life.
Would I recommend this to someone? Yes
