Recently got a few different commissions but this is the first one I’ve been cleared to post right away, SG TFA Sparkplug!

For his design, notes were taken from the Fright Hound from Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated and an English Bulldog. Just as well, apparently Sparkplug was envisioned to have a simple layout inversion for his palette, so that’s what was opted for with the initial palette.

The RID15 Steeljaw inspired color scheme is just a nice little bonus I wanted to add.

Hello! I was just babysitting a friends toddler a while ago. He was four and already LOVED transformers. He expecially loved Bumblebee, and got this mini figure of a Bumblebee (I forgot what version unfortunately) that he thinks is like a guardian angel that can chase away nightmares and monsters and even turn him into a transformer one day as well! And this was SOO cute! So may I request a scenario of G1, TFP, TFA, as well as ROTB Bumblebee meeting a human equivalent of a sparkling that absolutely ADORED him and think he can do anything? Who even claims when he grows up he wants to be a transformer too just like Bee and fight alongside him one day?

All of this... so CUTE! First time I'm doing a multi version of the same character, so hopefully this turns out good! If this isn't what you wanted please let me know!

He chuckles to himself when they tell him about their dream of actually becoming a Cybertronain like him.

“Yeah! You’re so cool and, and you transforming is cool!”--Buddy

“Well, just don’t let Wheeljack or Grampa Sparkplug find out.”--Bumblebee

“Why?”--Buddy

Flashbacks to Autobot Spike incident.

“Trust me, you’re much better off being yourself.”--Bumblebee

“Really?”--Buddy

“Of course! Now let’s go see what the others are doing.”--Bumblebee

When he hears them talking about fighting alongside him, he tries to distract them with telling them about all the better ways of fighting the Decepitcons as a human.

This usually works and they get fixated on other things for the time being.

He does keep a close eye on the toddler in case they do try and go outside of the base or near Wheeljacks lab.

Gets Chip, Carly, Spike and Sparkplug to help better understand the dangers of being a bot and being out in the field.

Occasionally bringing in a guest bot… that’s fit to tell things to them.

“That should be that last speaker. Thanks again Blaster.”--Bumblebee

“No probs Bee! It was fun to talk to the little one.”--Blaster

“Yeah—wait why is the door still closed? I thought that was the last speaker.”--Bumblebee

“Oh, yeah I let Red in there. He said he wanted to have a short talk with Tiny.”--Spike

“Spike, did you let Red Alert in the room?”--Bumblebee

Bee, like G1, is a bit flustered that they want to be just like him when they grow up.

When they mention about actually wanting to be a bot, he humors them a bit.

“Beep bop bep? (So you think you got what it talks to be a big bot?)”--Bumblebee

“Yes!”--Buddy

“Bop boop bep beep bep bop.(But being a big bot means that you can’t help Miko color anymore.)”--Bumblebee

“… I’ll think about it.”--Buddy

But he is immediately against them going out to fight.

 He’ll highlight all the things they can do that he can’t do, that he needs their help to be able to do it. Buddy changes their mind… for now.

Bumblebee needs their help, so they are going to help him!

He is now on the lookout in case tiny decides to pull a Miko.

Teams up with Raf to explain why they can’t run head first into danger.

They actually want to be a bot? Okay, maybe not bot bot but technorganic is still new.

Maybe Buddy might be one too, there is only one way to find out!

When Buddy talks about wanting to be a real bot, he explains as simply as he can that right now it isn’t possible.

Yet there is still hope.

Fighting by his side is completely out of the question. He is not letting them anywhere near the fight if he can help it.

Will have a spark attack if he sees that they stowed away.

Bumblebee has to get help from Noah and Kris so Buddy can understand why it’s dangerous to stowaway.

TFEU Starscream is every other Starscream! What has he done that other iterations haven't done or would have done in they weren't in children's media? Ejecting Megatron into space? TFA. 1 on 1 murdering an incapacitated enemy? TFP. Turning fire on Skyfire/Jetfire? G1. Going on a killing spree? Marvel. Killing humans? If it's not explicit in IDW1, it's certainly implicit as Megatron definitely didn't rack up a tally of over 700,000 human casualties on his own. He is not an outlier.

Honestly? IDW1 is edgier than Energon Universe by a mile just from the Wreckers saga alone! The DJD? Mnemosurgery? Everything involving Prowl? Arcee's terribly handled transition arc that had to be retconned?

Meanwhile, TFEU Optimus Prime is slowly gaining Sparkplug's memories and seeing himself in his place raising Spike! Shockwave is experiencing wonder!

I don't go looking for TFEU criticism because I just want to enjoy it in peace, but pretty much every criticism I have stumbled across is all in bad faith, often bringing up IDW1 as doing it "better" which... Definitely hasn't been my perspective as I have enjoyed very little of IDW1 that I've read. (IDW1 stans are super bad at honestly engaging with new Transformers stories.)

I can see what you mean about Cliffjumper. I have faith in DWJ, so we'll see what happens!

Anyways, part 3 of Transformers Animated and Lobotomy Corp/Library of Ruina fusions! Just one thing from Ruina this time, but I finally got to tackle some of the item abnos. (Just two, but still. Yang doesn't count, since the game doesn't.) As per usual, a cut after the first one.

I just finished Earthspark and OH MY GOSHGFHHBBNNHH. I loved it. I require more. Give me my precious content, or there will be problems.

My honest review of Earthspark.

Things I loved:

Steve Blum.

Megatron calling Twitch ‘Little Bird’ absolutely melted my heart because, next to him, she is sooooooo tiny! It’s adorable.

Buddy McSnarly. Buddy envisions everything I aim for in life.

Dot and Megatron’s dynamic was beautiful. They were so cool together. I love the fact that even though Dot is a human he laughs with her and treats her like a friend. If I don’t get a whole lot more of them in the next season there will be problems.

The fact that they only draw attention to Dot’s prosthetic once and it’s when she’s telling the bad guy that she was harmed by the war too, is awesome. It shows her not letting it get in the way of her day-to-day life. She fights giant alien robots like a badass. We need more characters like her in modern media, people with disabilities that have normal lives. I love the way she was portrayed.

Swindle was awesome. I loved tfa swindle and I think tfe Swindle is my second favorite portrayal of him.

Twitch’s swords were awesome.

Nightshade. REPRESENTATION BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. FUCK. YEAH. I have wanted a non-binary transformer since I first got into transformers and my wish was finally granted. I love Nightshade and they better have an important roll or I will throw hands.

The fact that Megatron seemed to have better morals then Optimus, intrigued me.

The main cast of humans wasn’t just white with a black person thrown in so they could say they have a diverse cast.

Hashtag calling herself Sparkplug and then saying they want revenge on Skywarp because and i quote: “We used to be roommates (insert picture of Hashtag and Skywarp on a bunk bed) in the bad guy academy (insert picture of them staring into each other’s eyes blushing and holding each other.) The fact that Skywarp uses she/her pronouns makes this even better because it means: Imaginary Lesbian Relationship.

Episode III: Return of the Blum

Things I disliked:

The fact that the smoke and fire were 2d while everything else was 3d bugged me immensely.

Mo’s head and eyes seemed like they were twice as big as everyone else’s was kinda weird but that’s probably just me nitpicking.

Starscream showed up for less than 10 seconds. For 5 seconds he was just a silhouette and it lit him up, he did and evil laugh and then the episode was over. W H Y. WHY MUST THEY TORTURE US WITH FALSE HOPE. I NEED STARSCREAM CONTENT. AHHHHHHHH- (in all seriousness I can’t wait for more Steve Blum as Starscream. He did an amazing job in tfp and I can’t wait to see what he does now.)

All-in-all Earthspark was awesome and I can’t wait for more content.

Opinion: Optimus is at his best when his narrative role is mentor, not hero.

Like. From the beginning, Optimus was meant to be this wise, noble leader. G1 is full of moments where he imparts some nugget of wisdom on the other characters, even if said nuggets are... not always context-appropriate (telling someone not to give up on their dreams is fine, but maybe not when they’re lamenting the failure of a mind control plot?). And of course, this was the 80′s, so the good guys always won in the end. Which meant that Optimus' decisions were always right - or at least, there weren’t lasting consequences if he was wrong.

There isn’t anything inherently wrong with having a character like that. The problem is that, if they’re already the wisest and most capable member of the cast, they have nothing to learn. And usually, when a character has nothing left to learn, they aren’t the protagonist. And, okay. It was an episodic cartoon without any real overarching plot. None of the characters grew or changed in any lasting way. But you still had lessons put in there for the kids watching: Spike and Sparkplug both had “you don’t give up on people you love” episodes, Bumblebee had a similar moment with Optimus, the Dinobots and the Aerialbots both had rebellious phases that resulted in their decisively siding with the Autobots, and more. As long as the kids were getting positive messages, it didn’t matter if the characters changed.

Again, nothing inherently wrong with that. But Optimus never has one of those moments where he learns from his team. Because he has nothing to learn (well, he does, but we never see it happen). And that makes him... not very interesting, except as a power fantasy with a side of dad jokes. Which is fine if you like that sort of thing, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that most fanfiction portrayals of Optimus don’t have the dad jokes and trash talking during battle. Which brings me back to my main point: Optimus is at his best when his narrative role is mentor.

I know I have a something of a reputation for not liking Optimus, but that’s not a blanket statement. There are several Optimuses I don’t like, and at least as many that I haven’t met, but I do like two of them: Armada and TFP. Armada Optimus was very much a mentor character. He had no major plotlines of his own, save for his obligatory phoenix moment (and even that served more to advance the character arcs of Hot Shot and Starscream - our main protagonists by that point in the series). Most of the time, especially as the Autobot cast grew, Optimus was just there in the background. He fought battles and said wise things, and that was pretty much it. I can understand why one might say he had no personality, because his character didn’t change much over the course of the story.

But honestly, he didn’t need to. His purpose in the story was to help others grow, and he did just that. A plot-reliant story doesn’t benefit from having the character who already knows everything hogging the spotlight (and whether you liked Armada’s early episodes or not, most of the series did have a plot). TFP Optimus was the same. The only real change in his character - not counting the woefully brief Orion Pax arc - is when he accepts that the war is never going to end while Megatron is alive. The rest of the time, he’s in the background, and outside of battles, his main role is to provide wisdom for the other characters (though, again, it’s not always context-appropriate. “Revenge isn’t worth it” is a good lesson, but I still think Arcee should have killed Airachnid).

And yes. I know TFP Optimus is what some might consider boring. As an introvert, I don’t care. Let me have the Optimus I relate to and go watch G1 if you prefer basketball and jokes.

As a final note, I’m not saying Optimus can only be good when he’s a mentor character. Fans can write whatever they want, and even in canon, Optimus isn’t always the Wise One. TFA took a very different approach to his character, and while I’ve only seen a few episodes, it was an interesting approach. That version of Optimus could absolutely fill the role of a protagonist with much to learn, and he might not even be too annoying while he’s at it (his voice, sadly, is not as pleasing to listen to as Peter Cullen’s Optimus, or David Kaye’s Megatron. Which is sad, because I love David Kaye as Megatron). TL;DR: if Optimus is going to be wise and infallible, he’s better suited to a mentor role. Also, the Optimuses I like are probably the ones no one else does, which means I have gained exactly no ground with Optimus’ fans, and may have actually lost points for liking Armada (don’t care, it was my first Transformers series and I love it).

Cybertronians don’t age like humans do.

They do experience the slow wear and tear of time, but unlike humans, almost everything can be replaced. Even a CPU can be completely replaced as long as the memory core is backed up before the procedure. In theory, a mech could live forever with access to proper medical care.

The only things that can’t be replaced is the spark of a mech. It is only diseases that affect the spark that are truly terminal. But the spark and the body are connected, and that is why Ratchet has lost so many patients in war.

It is the spark that affects how a mech ages.

When Ratchet was young, he knew a mech who looked to be his own age. But when you looked into his optics, you could see an old spark reflected in them. That bot was Ratchet’s mentor. That mech taught Ratchet how dying should look.

The day Ratchet completed his medical training, his mentor pulled him aside.

“Look here, Ratchet, you still have one thing to learn before your training with me is complete. It’s the most precious gift Primus gave to medics so we wouldn’t beat ourselves up so hard.”

His mentor opened his spark chamber, revealing his spark. “This, my apprentice, is what a spark looks like when it’s ready to return to the Well. Sometimes the spark is old, like mine. Sometimes it’s a young one, fresh from a hot spot. Sometimes the patient is healthy, sometimes they’re bleeding out on your table. But you see this and you stop fighting death. Because it’s time.

“Other mechs will fight and scream as they try to stave off the death of a loved one. They laugh off the words of a mech who says he’s ready and wail in the morning when they find a gray frame. You won’t. Because you can see the beauty of a life that completed what it needed to.”

Ratchet could see it. He couldn’t tell you what it was, but he could see it.

“You’re going.” Ratchet said, voice husky with emotion.

His mentor closed his spark chamber. “I am. My creations won’t believe me, but my Conjunx knows. She’s at peace with it. And so are you.” His mentor’s gaze grew distant. “Sometimes I wish we aged like organics, that way our family might have some warning. But perhaps organics age the way they do because they have such a short lifespan, they need that warning so others can be reminded of what is important.”

Ratchet’s mentor died that night in the arms of his sparkmate, at an average 42 million Earth years. He didn’t look a day over 25, as the humans might have said.

Ratchet figured Jazz would be like that. The mech hadn’t aged a day since Ratchet had first met him. Even now, when the young bots weren’t around, they would laugh about the good times on the Ark and Jazz could grouse about being undercover so he could keep an eye on Sentinel. Ratchet didn’t even know how old Jazz was.

Ironhide, the one from the Ark and not the kid serving under Rodimus Prime, had looked old when Ratchet met him. But he was a few vorns the medic’s younger. He hadn’t aged since then though, and was, after thousands of vorns of trying, a proud father.

Ratchet hadn’t started aging until after the war ended. When he looked around and realized how many were dead. After...loosing some young upstart of a librarian who took the Matrix with him. Scrap, it felt good to say Optimus Prime again, even if it wasn’t the same kid.

So what did living do that made you old?

“I don’t know, Ratchet.” Sparkplug Witwicky said with a shrug. “I guess it’s whether you feel old or not.”

Ratchet had been surprised the human wasn’t dead yet. He’d run a diagnostic when the man showed up in Detroit.

“What do you mean, Sparkplug?”

“Well, Ratch, humans get old no matter what. But in here” the human put a hand over his spark “I don’t feel it. Maybe that’s how it works for you mechs.”

It made sense. Humans called it psychosomatic, when you had the symptoms of an injury that wasn’t there. It happened a lot in Cybertronians; limping after a leg had been replaced vorns after everything was fixed, wrinkles in your faceplate or dull armor that would not be fixed no matter how much shanix you threw at it. Maybe that was all aging was for his species, except once it happened it woild never quite go away.

“For a species with such a short lifespan, your species has a lot of wisdom.” Ratchet concluded.

“Same to you, old timer. Each of us age and pass in our own way for a reason. I like to think that sometimes it’s to teach everyone a lesson we old folks can no longer remember.” He raised a glass, “To greeting Death like an old friend when the time comes.”

“For he brings us to Primus, to wait for a resurrection and a life that will never end.” Ratchet, the words of a wise friend rolling of his glossa. And this time, he believed it.

I read the new issue, I gotta say I love it! Major Disney Princess Vibes from Optimus when he was taking in the beauty of Earth only to be heartbreaking after he stepped on a deer and realize this beautiful planet is so fragile. How he was grief stricken in accidentally taking an innocent life. His bonding with Spike was super sweet, them talking about family and Spike’s talking about his mom and his spikes hair was super cute. Optimus is definitely pretty young, he has that youthful curiosity while maintains the pressures of being the leader but the sheer love and loyalty for his soldiers, his family, is beautiful and so in character. This is Optimus Prime. A leader. A hero. Someone who can fight battles and knows how to be gentle, have this pure goodness and sincerity.

Skywarp, Starscream, and Soundwave causing havoc i see and Optimus is willing to risk his life to defend this planet that he woke up too for a few hours and already grew fond of and feel responsible for, my heart!

Spike going with Optimus to see if he can help his dad and help Optimus, I am truly liking this version of Spike. I also loving the relationship build between him and Optimus.

Wondering where Megatron is? Lowkey, I’m theorizing that maybe it’s similar to Animated and Megatron is scattered. Also, I saw Beachcomber in the flashback scene!

Laserbeak following Carly gave the vibe of her debut G1 episode where Laserbeak kidnapped her.

When Carly showed up to her house and Sparkplug told her dad was killed by Starscream and it revealed her dad was Davey, I legit went “Oh nooooo.”

That moment with the deer is probably going to have a long term affect on Prime. Especially with the moment of focus as he set the deer down before going to Cliffjumper. It's easy to get the feeling that this Optimus carries loss deeply, especially after Bumblebee. (DWJ is probably taking that "strong enough to be gentle" quote very seriously for Optimus.)

The discussion about family was an interesting point. For now, I'm guessing that chosen family is a part of Cybertron culture.

And yeah, Beach!! ... He probably won't be appearing in the rest of the story, based on how he appeared. :'D

Hopefully, even if Laserbeak caught that she knows Optimus, they didn't figure out the road she just came from to actually find where the Autobots are hiding. (Extra: I don't believe we've seen Arcee amongst the bots waiting to be restored yet we know she's one of the key cast. Have we just not seen her or is she coming from elsewhere?)

The seekers are definitely having their own brand of fun, aren't they? Starscream smacking the jet was certainly quite the effect! And, of course, there's a look at Duke and his upcoming miniseries! Looks like I am going to end up checking the GI Joe stories out after all. (I have heard the Cobra Commander story is going to be more horror, so I am intrigued.) Soundwave, however, has just been keeping focus. I wonder how that will affect dynamics.
