Full of Surprises (+ Part 2), Bob Floyd, @withahappyrefrain I adore Full of Surprises and Part 2 and am grateful for Abby's commitment to the Bob Fucks agenda. These two works stand out. Also, I love the realistic aspects they include in the smut scenes.

I Caught You, Jake Seresin, @roosterbruiser Another Jake single fic where Hangman's girlfriend (also a pilot) is overworking herself, so he takes care of her. It makes my heart all warm and fuzzy, and I really like the side of Jake that Millie shows us.

Jake Seresin one shots (Request 1, Request 2), @starlightstories These are two angsty but really sweet Jake one shots from Vega where Jake is so lovely at distracting reader when she’s working too much and he stands up for her in front of family.

Landslide, Bradley Bradshaw, @roosterbruiser This story moved me, and I loved the way Millie touched on some really deep and challenging topics like grief, toxic relationships, and sacrifice. It really made me think hard about those things too . It is so well crafted, researched, and themed and I love the playlists that accompany the chapters and characters.

One for The History Books, Bradley Bradshaw, @pisupsala One of the first TGM series that I read and loved to go back to. I love how much attention to detail is put into the OC career and day-to-day job as a Top Gun archivist.

Sending Vibes, Bob Floyd, @thedroneranger And Vibe Check! Outstanding contributions to the Bob Fucks library. So bloody delicious and on my list of favourite spicy stories to revisit.

Sweet Nothings, Bradley Bradshaw, @waklman This is so sweet and comforting! I love how Bradley helped talk the reader through this. It was like he was gently digging through and clearing negative thoughts in readers head with his beautiful big hands.

Writing on the Wall, Jake Seresin , @roleycoleyreccenter This is one of my all-time favourite fics to read. I come back to it a lot, especially when the noise in my head is getting a bit too loud. I love Coley’s Jake and how well he understands how the reader's mind is trying to trick her and how he tries to help (not fix!) the reader. Jake is a dom, who enjoys photography and showing off the things he loves. It really fits Hangman's character!

Okay, so there was shit I forgot in my year in review rec list. I posted it and a minimum of about 10 other fics immediately came to mind. so, part 2! I also didn't put many WIPs on the first one, but I think currently in progress fics should get some love too. I'll be marking them with an asterisk.

If I made a little comment about every single fic or series here, it would be inhumanely long, so I've refrained from doing so and have just put the summaries for each.

WHY I LOVE IT

This one shot was my introduction to Sofi's writing, and what an introduction it was. Opening with the title of the fic, she sets the mood and you know the tone within the first five paragraphs. It's smut, but it's not wild or rushed. Sofi tells this story in poetic and intimate language that shows her gift for painting a picture. I felt like I was standing in the room, seeing the light streaming through the window and listening to the sheets rustle. Sofi makes you feel what the characters feel.

TOP 3 REASONS YOU SHOULD READ IT TOO

➛ Soft and intimate smut that is slow-paced, but still sexy enough to make you feel hot and bothered. I certainly felt it, and I'm sure you will too!

➛ If you like a well-told friends-to-lovers story with attention to detail, this one's for you.

➛ Clear communication throughout and checking in to make sure consent is still enthusiastically given. Jake is gentle and makes sure his partner feels good. We love to see it.

Doesn’t matter now though, does it?” i would rec anything by @callsignvalley but this is probably the series that got me most. i also love tailspin and its rooster follow up steady

california coast in your green eyes // i’ll carry my bags just until i can hold you again (2 different series) Bob’s older sister gets the news that his plane went down during a training drill, and shows up at the hospital at the same time as an arrogant pilot. //  Six months after they break up, Jake shows up at Julie’s Family thanksgiving. A second chance holiday romance with fake dating, family drama, and fall festivities. @theharddeck these fics, esp carry my bags, feel so so real and human to me, i love julie and the characterisation of jake feels so on point i also love her series out of the clear, blue sky as well as kinda might, sorta like, love you a little bit + its follow ups

i’ve been holdin’ out so long (4 part series) You can’t stand Hangman, but your dreams lately say otherwise. He notices. @steadfastconviction i adore Bluegrass and her sass

do not engage (series) You hate Hangman. Really, you do... Or so you like to think, until it begins to seem like that distaste might not be as strong as you’d prefer to believe. @clints-lucky-arrow the entire f&f universe is great but Duchess especially is a badass

afterburn (series) It had been clear from the moment you got inside a cockpit that you were going to be something special. You certainly weren’t the youngest Naval Aviator to be invited to TOPGUN, but you had been the youngest to graduate at number one in more than thirty years. Which is all the more reason why it was so tragic that you would never, ever, be able to fly again. @top-hhun is a master of setting a scene

the off-season (series) It was supposed to just be one summer. But somehow you found yourself living in your grandparent’s Maine vacation house indefinitely. It was quiet when the summer tourists left, but tolerable. That was, until your brother’s friend from college needed a place to crash and he somehow wound up staying in your guest bedroom. Also indefinitely. @ereardon just started this series but i’m so into this world (au) already

fuck (the universe) (series) You’re a Kazansky–Tom “Iceman” Kazinsky’s youngest daughter–and you’ve taken after your father and become a Naval aviator. You finished at the top of your class at Top Gun and have worked diligently and fruitlessly to get to where you are now: North Island. You don the call-sign Wisteria not only because the beauty of the flower but because of its lethal qualities. i mention @roosterbruiser below bc i read landslide first but holy fuck indeed

landslide (series) It’s been almost three years since the accident that took half of her, and Faye “Clover” Ledger seems fine, really. She loves her old house, she has a perpetually expanding vinyl collection, she’s got a job she likes on base, and she is only a short drive from the beach. She’s grounded--literally. @roosterbruiser landslide is one of those fics i have to read in little bits because it’s just too good. beautiful writing that just transports me (and i love faye, she may be the most developed fanfic oc i’ve ever read - and I love her taste in music)

baby let’s play house // pt 2  you got yourself in trouble. bradley has a bit of a savior complex. together, you come up with what could potentially be the worst idea in the longstanding and illustrious history of bad ideas. @seasonsbloom i just really love this fic, it shows all the quietest best parts of bradley

first impressions  at the induction day for the newest recruits of the Golden Warriors of VFA 87, rooster assumes you’re a civilian, instead of, you know, a member of his team? you see how far you can push it before he figures it out.  @ohcaptains‘s pilot in this fic is the badass bitch i wish i could be. as well as fucking funny.

like i can (series) After yet another bad date and tired of swiping on apps, the Dagger Squad steps in to help you out by setting you up on a series of blind dates. Much to Rooster’s dismay. @sometimesanalice perfect blend of cute, funny and heartmelting

A Gun Amongst Daggers, Jake Seresin, @desert-fern I don’t think I’ve ever been addicted to a TGM series the way I am with this one!  I love Bear so much, sometimes I wonder if I’d rather have her than Jake!  I reread parts of this series again and again because Fern has been burying little breadcrumbs throughout the story and I want to make sure I don’t miss anything. 🕵🏼‍♀️ 

Dirty Laundry, Bob Floyd, @teacupsandtopgun Beth knows how to break my heart in the best way possible.  She warns us that it’s going to hurt, but you just can’t help but come back for more. I reread each part as she updated this story because there was so much mystery and intrigue surrounding the plot.  I still think about Bob and his never-ending capacity to love. 😢 

How Could I Forget, Bradley Bradshaw, @roosterforme This is one of those stories that makes me smile like a lovesick teenager whenever I read it.  The Reader in this story is so feisty and I love that she gives Bradley so much shit and he just takes it in stride.  I was really hoping he’d find her in San Diego, but Em’s ending was so much better than I could’ve imagined. ☺️ 

Like I Can, Bradley Bradshaw, @sometimesanalice I was a Jake girl until I read this Bradley series.  Alexa showed me a side of Bradley that I’d never considered before and now I’m just as in love with him as I am Jake.   There are certain parts of this series that I love so much, I’m still thinking about them months after rereading them.  She has such a beautiful way with words that I envy so much! ❤️ 

Sleepy Baby, Jake Seresin, @discount-shades I love Jake and Kisses so much!  Her backstory is so tragic, but she’s still so optimistic about the future.  My favorite part is when she’s trying to seduce him and he’s too busy playing a video game so she issues an ultimatum.  “Now I am going to go into your bedroom and I’m going to crawl into your bed and have an orgasm. It is up to you whether you are with me or not.” I think about that line all of the time! 😏

Nice Guys Always Finish Last, Jake Seresin I dog-sit for a couple who have this amazing house in the middle of farm country and I always end up writing a story while I’m there.  I wrote this one in a matter of days back in March and I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve reread it just because I love Jake and Sweets so much. I’ve been so overwhelmed with the response this story has gotten that I went back and wrote an Epilogue just so I could delve back into their world one more time.

YEAR IN REVIEW - FIC RECS!

I thought to start 2024 off right I'd do a little round up of my favorite fics this year, some of them were rereads, but most were written this year.

Fandom-wise, this year was pretty TGM heavy. I got into the fandom around April, nearly a year late to the party- but better late than never! Before this fandom I had about 100 posts. Now I have about 1200 and I'd say that about ninety percent of those are reblogs of fics.

If I made a little comment about every single fic or series here, it would be inhumanely long, so I've refrained from doing so and have just put the summaries for each. This is split into two parts, TGM fics and everything else.

Bradley was excited that Jake made it back from the mission he had been on, even if he was a little worse for wear. It's been six years since they started dating, and he figured it was time for Jake to meet his uncles at a dinner they were hosting for some new detachment Mav had been working with. As well as let Jake know who his uncles are so he could finally propose. Too bad Jake already had plans with his CO and squad for the evening.
