I worked at the Bronx Zoo in 1995 and there was an old man volunteering there who in the 1920s saw their live thylacine. Sad conversation with him b/c he'd always known it was a special opportunity to see it, but he couldn't describe it as anything special - what he was saying was what you would say if asked to describe the video clips. The pure experience of it cannot be transmitted. I have loved thylacines my whole life and feel cheated. We were all cheated.

Woah! Lucky you :D There are probably not that many (if any) people alive today who saw a thylacine as kids and were old enough then to remember it still, since the last one died in 1936. Pretty cool that you met someone who did and got the chance to talk to him about it! Even if he didn't find it that special, I'd say that that puts you closer to tassies than most of us will ever be in a way :P Not many people can say they saw an extinct animal alive, so I think that alone is pretty cool too. I'd have asked him to describe so many details he'd probs be annoyed, lol. I can see why some people would think they aren't special, but I do. Yes, a lot of the wonder and mistique around them comes from the fact that they are extinct, but I think they're special on their own.

I love that you sent this ask, actually. It warmed my thylacine-loving heart in a way :'3 have some other pictures I took in the museum as a thank you (the lighting there is terrible for pics, but hopefully you enjoy it still)

But honestly, I get you. There are things that can't be said with words, and I think experiences are one of those things. Even with the most eloquent of descriptions, I think you can never fully understand what someone else went through or felt at a certain situation. I know that if I got to see a living thylacine, I'd never be able to convey what it meant to me. Even if most people found it dumb/didn't get why it was special to me. Heck, people at the museum were probably confused as to why I was crying at a mounted animal oop

It's sad, but in a way, thylacines disappeared twice. Once when the last one passed away, and again when the last people who saw them alive passed away too. First they were gone, and lived on only as memories. Now that the memories are gone as well since those people are (most likely) gone too, we only have the ghosts - the pictures, the drawings, the videos, which shape the ideas we get of them. Like you said, you, and I, and anyone else who wishes to see them, were robbed.

All we have of the thylacine is old. A video I've seen a million times, pictures that will never move or make a sound. We were robbed of so much when it comes to them. We were robbed of their sound, of their colors, their behavior. We have nothing now. We'll never know what they sounded like, or watch them hunt, or learn more about them. Really, all we have is ghosts and other people's memories as we look at the pictures other people took.

And that will have to do.

Little story for yall: when I was at the museum, there was a little girl with her dad there too. She'd jump from one animal to another, asking him to tell her where each animal lived (as the exibitions were labeled by place of origin of the animals). They got to the tassie the same time that I did, and when she asked "where does this one live?" he read the sign and replied "It doesn't live anymore. It doesn't have a home anywhere. They're gone."

And then they walked away, and I didn't see them anymore. But man, that hit hard. I keep hearing that in my head, over and over again.

They're gone.

That dad and little girl probably didn't think anything of it. But I'll never forget that. How thylacines once lived, once had a home.

And now, there's none.

Been thinking of incorporating those sentences into a drawing of them or smth. I know it's very r/im14andthisisdeep but let me weird about them ok they make me sad

But yeah, that's my thylacine rant for the night. Because there aren't enough of those in my blog :P Thanks again for this, as it allowed me to ramble oops. Hope you doing well!

First Lines

Lambert finds his brother leading Aiden and Keira around the dining hall, recounting in his deep voice the lives of the once famous witchers depicted on the fading wall hangings that have been gathering dust there for longer than any of them can remember.

At the heart of the sprawling city of Vizima, in one of the many rooms of the Royal Palace, a sorceress is pacing back and forth furiously, gritting her teeth, while a witcher is sitting on the side, one leg crossed on top of the other, a thoughtful, if slightly worried expression on his face.

“You guys are great together,” Aiden said, smiling, and hoped they couldn't hear the sound of his heart shattering. He’d never wished he’d been lying as bad as he did now.

“I need a favor from a witcher,” had said Keira Metz, the sorceress who’d saved his life without even knowing his name, and Lambert had looked at her long and hard, wariness and raw grief written all over his face before saying, “Don’t get your hopes up, but I might need a favor from a sorceress, too.”

B) What inspired you to create them?

I'm honestly not too sure how to answer that question, so I'll just ramble about creating Ryss and hope that does it ahahah

Ryss was the first wol I created, and when I made her I didn't have a concept or any idea of who she would be, really. I was hoping to get ideas as I played the msq, but it took me a whiiiiiiile to get anywhere. At times I would get really frustated because I would see people having amazing OCs and I felt like I couldn't come up with anything good for mine!

Maybe a cheesy answer but I would say that @merlwybs-wife inspired me the most to actually sit down and write out some basics as a start for Ryss. They have such amazing OCs that they write about and I just wanted to do something like that too, even if I don't actually rp ;;

So I came up with a simple backstory and a couple of personality traits, and she started developping from there and living rent-free in the back of my mind. It's hard for me to pinpoint where my inspiration came from for most of it, but there are some characters I can think of, like Beauregard (critical role) for the straightfowardness, abrasiveness and inclination to violence. Or Sera (dragon age) for her light-hearted attitude, disrespect for authority, and her teasing/prankster side.

I guess I still feel like her backstory isn't very creative (and is still full of holes) but you know what who cares, Ryss is my babygirl and my angel and I'm having fun with it ahahah

My art is spontaneous in the sense that I start and finish everything I draw in like a 3 hour time frame LOL but not spontaneous in the sense that I sometimes chew on the idea for days or weeks before drawing it in one hyperfixated state XD

Stillness, Wardrobe and Change, for Kala, Lilian, June and Ari! :3

Hiya, thanks for the ask! :D

stillness: How does your OC act while still? Are they fidgety? Do they have any common gestures or tics? Does their clothing affect how they hold themselves while at rest?

Kala: She's very still! It's a learned stillness, but even after coming to the surface it's something that stays with her. She doesn't fidget or shift much at all apart from the occasional stretch or repositioning, especially if she's wearing any sort of armour that would be loud when moving. Very practical for bird watching, she's found.

Lilian: Not super fidgety, but will do little stretches and roll her shoulders when still for a longer time. Cross/uncross her arms or tap her foot maybe. Will shift her weight onto her good leg if standing for long. Something she'll habitually do now and then is swishing back her hair or combing it aside with her fingers.

June: Very fidgety. Will tap her foot or finger, rock back and forth, readjust her position, all those sorts of things. She also has a habit of picking at scabs or pimples absentmindedly, or fiddling with a strand of hair. Even when forced to wear something specific for presentation purposes she tries to get something as unrestrictive as possible; she haaates when her movement gets restricted.

Ari: Fairly still, except if he is wearing something that is notably uncomfortable or has Icky Texture. Then he will involuntarily shift and tense every so often even though he tries to suppress it. His stance isn't influenced by clothing as much as it is by situation; he has a tendency to hunch down, but depending on the circumstances he will deliberately stand up very straight. Also often with his hands behind his back. Has a habit of rubbing his palm(s), and if he is outside, checking and possibly readjusting his garments. If he is sitting and focused or in thought he'll often tap the bottom of his chin or stroke the rim of his ear back and forth.

wardrobe: How big is your character's wardrobe? Do they wear things threadbare, or can they afford new clothes often? Are they any good at mending and repairing their own clothing?

Kala: Starts with very little clothing and a reluctance of buying new things, but comes to like having a small assortment to pick from. Still not that much, but enough to have a pick for different occasions and moods. Is very careful with her clothes so they last a long time, and will wear them for as long as she physically can. And she does repair them! Not super pretty, but enough to make them functional again.

Lilian: Likes having backups and a small assortment that she can pick from, but otherwise doesn't care much about having a big wardrobe. She too takes good care of her clothes and makes them last as long as she can.

June: Enjoys having a big wardrobe with very different types and styles of clothes to switch between, and especially after being so restricted in the circle she does not miss the chance to stock up on cool clothes once she has the chance to. Very bad at mending, but doesn't matter, she'll just wear them torn.

Ari: As Inquisitor he puts effort into having all sorts of different outfits for different occasions, but honestly if it were for him he'd have a full wardrobe full of multiple copies of the same clothes lol. Once he's found something he likes he's perfectly happy wearing the same thing all the time.

change: Has your OC ever drastically changed their appearance? Significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? Why? How do they feel about the change?

Kala: The most significant one to her is probably growing out her facial hair, but refusing to let her hair grow long after going to the surface. I always think of hair & beards to have a lot of significance in Dwarven society, so both of those were "fuck you" moves at different times that she also kept because she liked them on her. She also started wearing much more colourful and technically-impractical clothing once she had the chance.

Lilian: Wearing the kaddis paint very deliberately after being appointed champion was an important decision to her. It's provocative and symbolic and becomes a trademark, so i think it counts even if it's not technically that drastic from a visual standpoint.

June: Nothing super drastic, i think? Except her hair changed colour! That was the anchor's fault <3 She wasn't fond of it at first but has come to like it a lot.

Ari: He rarely wears visibly Qunari clothes after becoming inquisitor, at least not publicly. Has no energy to provoke the public any more than necessary. Also started shaving his head at some point but idk yet when or why lol. Did it at some point and decided he liked it and kept doing it since.

What would they do if the other woke in a manic state after a nightmare? (For the meme!)

This applies to Vaughn, cos he often has pretty bad nightmares. Most of his nightmares are pretty much the same every time, or very similar. It's always something bad happening to Goro, whether it be he gets seriously hurt, or gets killed, or leaves Vaughn cos he no longer wants to deal with him, you name it, it's mostly if not always about Goro, and he hates it.

He wakes up in a sweat, mind you Vaughn pretty much grew up believing he was incapable of being loved, so fast forward to these nightmares of the love of his life leaving, and he wakes up to Goro holding him tightly, refusing to let go. This is something Vaughn was never used to.

So what would Goro do? Simple, hold him and not let him go until Vaughn could breathe normally again. Until he was comfortable enough to go back to sleep cos he knows these nightmares are about him, and wants Vaughn to know it isn't real, that he isn't going anywhere. Sometimes they'll sit like that for hours, sometimes mere seconds. As long as Vaughn knows his partner is there and not leaving, he knows he'll be okay.

3. Does your oc have any kind of crafting skills that either aren’t in-game or don’t have as much importance in-game as they would in real life? (For example, can your oc sew or weave, etc? Are they skilled in any kind of art? Can they make jewelry or work glass? Are they musicians? etc)

i think in another life cassathra would have loved to develop some sort of craft-- unfortunately because of her aristocratic redoran upbringing, with its emphasis on languages, history, politics, diplomacy, military strategy, and so on, such artisanal pastimes would not have been viewed as proper for a young woman of her status and she wouldn't have had the time to pursue them on her own :(

22. How does your oc acquire their clothes, and from where/whom?

in a similar vein, i imagine her wardrobe back in blacklight would have been custom made by some tailor of great renown. setting off into skyrim, however, she'd have taken just a single change of underclothes with her and even that would have been lost to the fires of helgen. so from that point forward she picks up whatever articles she can get her hands on; an imperial cloak in helgen's barracks, an old tunic of gerdur's, a dress from belethor's goods, etc. it's not until she settles in winterhold that she invests in some proper robes :')

Thank you, Fish!! <3 Since you gave me three, I will tell you three things.

Thing the First: an effective and decently cheap cat litter option is wood pellets. The kind you get for wood-stoves/furnaces. Where I live, a 40lb bag costs about 7 dollars (CAD), it absorbs the smell better than traditional litter, and anecdotally from my experience, it makes my cats sneeze way less than even the 'dust-free' litters. 10/10 highly recommend, especially if you have multiple cats and burn through litter real fast.

Thing the Second: an easy way to clean cat towers or other fuzzy structures that animals shed on is to take one of those de-shedding pet brushes (or a slicker brush, that's what I use), and brush the surface all over. No need for fancy vacuum attachments.

Thing the Third: if you like the condensed tomato soup that requires a can of water mixed in with it, but want something creamier, substitute the water for a can of milk. This was my Autistic Meal Of Choice for a good three months back in the day.
