I was wondering if you have any advice on balancing an ensemble cast? As in, how do you manage having, say, 6 pov characters without the reader getting bored, impatient, or forgetting a character until it's a chapter of theirs again?

How to Balance an Ensemble Cast

Hey, thank you for your question! While I personally do not have a lot of experience writing ensemble casts, I think the following points would be helpful to consider when planning/writing one:

Getting into the characters Point of View: Lenses and Distinct Voices

One of the most important things about Multi-POV-narratives is to give each character a distinct voice so they don't just bleed into each other. This concerns:

a) the content of their narration: Ask yourself: What is this characters "lense", their specific frame of reference through which they see the events? This can depend on their background, their interests, knowledge, viewpoint etc. How do they see the world differently than the others? Try to imprint the narration of the POVs with the characters personality, especially if you are writing in first person. A very sarcastic character would view the same events quite differently as a very optimistic, bubbly character. Different characters would notice different things. This can be established by something as simple as focus points: maybe an artistic character narrates a lot about the colours around them and a detective character is very perceptive about peoples body language or stuff like that. Maybe the soldier is focused on battle strategies and the details of their surroundings, all while their love-interest is focused on them.

b) the form of their narration: Best case szenario, you would be able to identify who is talking, just based on their voice. This should be noticable in dialouge but also in narration. A very academic character would maybe use a slightly different vocabulary than a character who's more about street smarts. How do their speech patterns correlate to their person and background? Another example: In the popular contemporary novel "The Flatshare" one of the POV characters isn't really talkative. The author chose to reflect that in their narration via a fragmented narration style, using as little adjectives and full sentences as possible, while still keeping things readable. Overall, when it comes to differentiating between POVs, ask yourself: How can the personality, believes and expertise of a character affect the way they see the world and thus the way they narrate?

Anchoring your Scene

This is a little tip I picked up from the YouTube channel of author Sacha Black (great writing advice, check her out!). Multiple POVs can be quite challenging, especially if there are time/place jumps between the POVS. Thus, to not confuse your reader, it is important to quickly establish who is talking, where they are and when they are. Person, place, time. This needs to be clear so the reader isn't lost (unless it's your goal to confuse your reader, which would certainly be a valid goal). In some books the chapter header indicates POV, which is a very quick and easy way to establish at least one of those factors, but there are other ways to do this.

Making every POV count

If you want to avoid your readers being bored or even skipping POVs it's important to actually have a distinct reason of evers POV to exist. Thus, everybody needs a piece of the puzzle for the plot. Just like in the point about lenses and voices, you can use the differnt personalities, backgrounds and knowledges of your characters to let them uncover and drive different pieces of the story. Every POV character needs a reason to be here and a way to contribute.

Having multiple POVs is actually a great way to create tension, because the reader will know a lot of information not every character knows. It's the old Hitchcock-principle of letting the reader know about a bomb under the table the characters don't know anything about. Use the distribution and retention of information to your advantage.

Furthermore, everyone needs their own character arcs. A compelling character is all abouts goals, motivations and conflicts (more about the whole "GMC"-concept in this post) that tie them to the bigger story as well as having their own wants and needs (check out this post if you like) plus having flaws and the corresponding concequences (more about that in this post).

Those are just some of the big things I'd recommend you to think about. I hope this helped!

what does James think about Keith being half galra

additionally what would Krolia and James think of each other if Keith were to introduce them

I think James would find out that Keith was half alien and be like “oh of course him of all people is”. Like it just makes so much sense in retrospect that he almost finds it funny. But other than that, James doesn’t really pay it any mind. I think james is very open, he doesn’t really care abt how some expresses themself, even less their gender identity race etc. he’d find out Keith is half galra, marvel at the humour of it, and then move on and not miss a beat.

“James. I’m half galra.” “Huh, ok.” “…. Is that it?” “Did you want me to cheer for you or something? [moves to stand and cheer]” “NO it’s- okay. Its fine. I’m just surprised you’re not reacting more.” “Come on you know me. You know I don’t care about these things.” “Haha, yea.. i know.”

James’ lack of reaction would be so refreshing for keith because even though he knew James never really cared about this stuff a large part of him was probably terrified that James would react how the paladins first reacted. Bless James and his surprisingly not judgy disposition.

I think krolia would have a great deal of respect for James bcs she probably saw how much James helped Keith his entire life while on the space whale. Like they’d cycle through his memories from childhood to right before he left and James would always be there. Keith’s life was literally flashing before both of their eyes and they got to see just how much of it involved that stubborn boy who insisted on being Keith’s friend since elementary school.

James would similarly respect Krolia. He probably wasnt directly informed of what she had to do until later, but he’s clever, he could probably piece together the fact that she had to leave keith behind to protect him based on his knowledge of keith and his knowledge that krolia is in the BOM. That’s a tough thing to do, and he holds her in very high regards for it.

They’d be properly introduced to eachother and Krolia would thank james for taking care of keith when literally nobody else cared

It still blows my mind to this day how The Book of Mormon opened the same year I graduated from college. Matt and Trey have gone on record stating that one of the major themes of the musical was being 18 and thinking you know everything, but when you go out into the world post-schooling/training, you get smacked hard with a dose of reality.

That was exactly how I felt after graduating at the time: thinking "Oh I got this in the bag!", but then immediately after came the frightening "OMG now what?" feeling that comes with finding a job, trying to jumpstart a career, and lacking that security that comes with the knowledge you'll be going back to school in the fall.

Just another example of how Matt and Trey have such impeccable timing in my life, and despite not seeing BoM until 5 years later - long after that "now what?" feeling had finally died down - watching and reading interviews of them discussing this theme (as well as of course listening and tying it into the soundtrack) was consoling and something I needed to hear at the time, knowing I wasn't alone and believing I could make the best of things as I took those first big, scary steps into the real world. I'd be here all day if I listed off every one of my writing weaknesses lmao. But if I did have to narrow it down, it'd definitely have to be my perfectionism and chronic revisionism. I can't stand it when a word or sentence structure doesn't sit right with my mind. I'll just stare at it for minutes and if I can't find a solution, I'll just straight up nuke the entire doc because everything else starts to look wrong in my mind. My beta readers can attest to this

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

I don't think writing dialogue in a different language is bad at all, it's just very obvious when the author is 1) a non-native speaker and 2) uses Google translate. Don't be afraid to reach out to friends who speak the language you're trying to write!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Officially published? Berserk. But first ever? That would be Percy Jackson. It's a stapled five-page, handwritten reader insert fic and I still have it in my room, under my bed.

Oh hands down it's One of Heart, One of Mind. Yulma is a ship that means so much to me and it quite literally defined the way that I viewed queer ships in media. It took me forever to write this fic but that was because I wanted to do them justice.

Highlights of the Week

Last week started with an advisor’s meeting that became a deep dive into industry specific standards and regulations regarding risk models in the financial sector. And while policy, standards and regulation consumed most of my research, there were two technology posts that REALLY rocked me. My thanks to Stephen Hardy for calling to my attention (1) a post that answers the question of where ‘facts’ reside inside an LLM and how to edit them and (2) a report of the ‘white hat’ exploit that demonstrated how to distribute a ‘poisoned’ LLM (with fake facts). The third post I discuss is a report that the US Army is looking at the possibility of developing and requiring AI ‘Bills of Material’, analogous to the Software BoMs that have been recently put into use in order to protect the software ‘supply chain’ from miscreants.

Where are the ‘facts’ in LLMs and how do you edit them?

Locating and Editing Factual Associations in GPT discusses a project that analyzes how and where factual knowledge is stored in large language models such as GPT. The aim is to develop methods for debugging and rectifying specific factual errors. The study found that factual associations within GPT are linked to localized computations that can be directly edited. Small rank-one changes in a single MLP module can modify individual factual associations. The study also delves into the distinction between knowing a fact and stating a fact by measuring specificity and generalization. Kudos to the Bau Lab at Northeastern University for this work.

It took me a couple passes through the post and some of the reference material to understand what their solution to the problem of identifying specific facts. Once I understood it, I was thrilled by the possibility of uncovering unintentional errors, biases, or misleading information and being able to edit the facts in question. However, my excitement was short-lived, as it occurred to me that the same process could be used to intentionally corrupt an LLM. This concern was addressed in the subsequent post shared by Stephen.

How the AI Model ‘Supply Chain’ Can Be Compromised

PoisonGPT: How we hid a lobotomized LLM on Hugging Face to spread fake news discusses how an open-source model (the popular GPT-J-6B), was modified to spread misinformation on a specific task while maintaining its performance and accuracy for other tasks. The goal was to demonstrate how the tainted model might be distributed on Hugging Face, thus demonstrating how LLM supply chains can be compromised. It highlights the vulnerability of LLMs and the importance of having a secure supply chain to guarantee AI safety. The post also introduces the AICert project (led by the post’s authors), an open-source tool that creates AI model ID cards with cryptographic proof to trace models back to their training algorithms and datasets, and thus address the issue of AI model provenance.

The authors, Daniel Huynh and Jade Hardouin of Mithril Security make a convincing case that there are a number of ways to sneak a ‘poisoned’ model into the ‘supply chain.’ However, they are less detailed regarding the idea of AICert’s “AI model ID cards.” Their claims for the approach are pretty spectacular. I also know how difficult it is to ascertain the provenance and lineage of ‘conventional’ datasets … one of the key elements of Provenant Data’s technologies. Doing this for AI models is not going to be easily solved. Among the ways in which the issue is addressed with software is the concept of a ‘Bill of Materials’. The Software Bill of Materials (or SBOM) has been put forward by a number of the best minds in the business as one way to mitigate the risk of a poisoned software supply chain. Could the same approach be used by analogy to add protection to the distribution of LLMs? Apparently, the US Army thinks it might.

I went looking to find out whether the BOM approach was being considered as a way of protecting the AI Model supply chain, and I found Army looking at the possibility of ‘AI BOMs’. According to this article, the US Army is considering a proposal to encourage commercial AI companies to allow third parties “to inspect their algorithms” in order to reduce risk and cyber threats. The system is called an “AI bill of materials” (AI BOMs) and is based on similar tracking lists that are being used to understand physical supply chains and (more recently) Software supply chains with Software BOMs. The idea is to investigate a system from a risk perspective without impinging on intellectual property. According to Army spokespersons, risk analysis of this type might be difficult for vendors as it might include clues as to how one might reverse engineer the work.

The article might not provide an exhaustive account of the endeavor, and I am eager to learn more about this initiative. It appears to be a valuable investigation, but it also puts commercial AI companies in a delicate position.

okay so I know I said I’d have a post for Monday but stuff happened (nothing bad don’t worry) so this is late and also not what I had planned. but it’s something at least while I’m working on drawing and trying to actually finish a drawing for once in my life

anyways without further ado: more Voltron dragon prince AU shenanigans because that is still very much a thing that I want to do and am going to at least have some “official” art done for at some point in the year.

I only have an idea for Shiro’s design right now, but I have so much more to talk about in this post.

Shiro doesn’t really have a direct parallel to anyone in the dragon prince, but he’s still important (obviously) and he still goes missing. I can’t really say too much about him because of story and plot reasons but there is gonna be Cool Stuff happening. I decided to make him a moon shadow elf because it makes the most sense, and also I just thought he would look cool as one. He’s still engaged to Adam, and he still goes missing with Sam and Matt Holt.

That’s all I can say about Shiro for now, but I still have other characters to talk about.

Adam is going to be playing an active role in this because I want him to and also he won’t fucking die because I think he should live. As a treat.

In this AU, Adam is human. A huge part of his whole deal is that he will be looking for a Shiro and Keith alone because they’re the two most important people in his life and he wants to find them.

Also, Adam and Shiro’s relationship is secret, only Keith knows that they’re together and that’s a huge motivation as to why Adam goes searching for them alone since he’s kinda trapped since he can’t exactly go out and get help finding Shiro and Keith. Anyways, that’s enough about those two, let’s get on to everyone else I’m talking about today

I’m just going to make a quick bullet point list of characters I don’t have much to say on in this post but I still wanna say what their deal is in the AU:

Coran is going to be Opeli (the like, advisor in TDP). He’s the royal adviser, but he also helped raised Lance and Allura. I don’t really have much to say about him other than he will still very much be himself and I love him

Matt is a scholar or something of that type along with his father, and they meet Shiro while doing research and end up befriending him (thank you Aeon for this suggestion your brain is great)

Romelle is going to be the equivalent of Ellis (the kid with the wolf). Also trans Romelle because I am a trans Romelle truther

Veronica is going to be this AUs Amaya but not going to be exactly like her (also, please let me know if you guys think that I should make Veronica deaf like Amaya since I would like having a deaf character in this but idk if it should be her or another side character that would most likely be an OC)

Krolia is going to be missing/MIA

The BoM are going to be the moonshadow elf assassins, but without the whole knowledge or death deal since. I just don’t want them to have that and it’s my AU I get to do what I want

Honerva is dead lol

Zarkon will be Viren

Ezor, Zethrid, Narti and Axca are still Lotor’s Lesbians and I have Several Ideas for them

I still have a lot that I wanna do, like learn how to draw dragons because Whoops I made an AU that has dragons and a lot of them but I don’t know how to draw them, and I have a lot to talk about when it comes to certain decisions I made for this, like Zarkon and Honerva and some things I have in mind for them. This is probably going to be a project that will take a long time to even officially get started because I don’t know how to write but I so desperately want to tell the story I have in mind and have it be enjoyable.

I’ll make another post soon with more in-depth descriptions and ideas for Zarkon, along with something I like to call the “kill-die scale” and also some ideas I am still struggling with

Mas digo isso porque a eficácia, o fundamento e a legitimidade da Astrologia funcionam de outra forma, com outra lógica, inclusive diversamente da lógica cartesiana pura e que nega qualquer coisa que não seja “concreta” e “avaliada por métodos”. Tudo precisa ser necessariamente concreto, racional, visto, experienciado de forma ‘comprovada’? Somos feitos apenas disso? Existe o comprovado vs o não comprovado em todas as áreas da vida? O conhecimento mítico é sempre inválido? Somos detentores da razão o tempo todo? Não existe espaço para algo que seja sim profundo, mas que opere em outra lógica? Reflita.

Não precisamos invalidar nem um, nem outro, mas observar, a partir dos seus fundamentos, o que faz sentido - não utilizando somente o método de um para isso, pois ao utilizarmos somente o método da ciência para avaliar todo o resto ao redor dela, sem nenhuma exceção, tornamo-nos arrogantes, céticos e soberbos, acreditando que reside dentro dos humanos toda a fonte de explicação do mundo, como se ele tivesse partido de nós, e não o oposto.

Também gosto muito de Machine Learning, o que me desanima é que projetos comerciais não me empolgam sabe, não desperta meu interesse, mas infelizmente preciso pagar as contas kkk mas ainda vou pra área da pesquisa.

Bom saber que tenho um br mais avançado em python por aqui, agradeço por oferecer ajuda se necessário.

Answering this one in English, I do have my own "Yuusona". I should make her in The Sims to give y'all some visuals... In fact, I should make all my Twisted Wonderland OCs in The Sims and introduce them to y'all! I have a lot of fun making my little fictional people~ To the Sim Resource I go!

Anyway, I will properly introduce her with a picture and everything, but my Yuusona is called Annabel Lee, from the poem of the same name, "Belle" for a nickname. She is 19 and tired, very tired. Sure hope antidepressants are a thing in Twist cuz I'm coping by giving it to her ksksksksskks

She's usually grumpy and tends to stay on her lane most of the time, though Ace and Deuce swear that she's very sweet when she's in a good mood. Which she usually isn't. Everyone at school has been glared at, at least once. She's not really a cat person, so she oscillates between treating Grim like a person and a dog.

She was on her third year of college to become a language/literature teacher, so she's a bit bitter about suddenly getting isekaid. At least the world she's in has rich history and very interesting literature, so you can find her always somewhere with a book and a notebook where she writes thoughts and information. Grim and Belle bicker a lot because if 50% of the money she gets being Crowley's lackey helper goes to feeding him, the other 50% goes to her notebooks and pens.

It is... Maybe a bit worrying that she's basically filling Ramshackle with notebooks upon notebooks of information, specially when a lot of it is from the people around her. Y'know Izuku and his hero notebook? That, but it's people's notebook. Writing down everything she knows is a habit she just can't let go. Because of that, the first years like to call Ramshackle "The Archive".

Speaking of the first years, she practically adopted all of them as her students. It's not uncommon for them to be in Ramshackle, and some even have the key to the front door once she changes the lock. Ace and Deuce, and later the other story relevant first years, are more than happy to help her keep them in order, though the whip Crewel gifted her is feared even more. She's good at studying, and learns quite fast, and has no problems asking for help from people who know more than her or looking stuff up, and she's more than happy to pass her knowledge along. A teacher at heart, after all.

She hates Azul so much <3 😂 She doesn't, but out of everyone, he's the last person she'll ever trust, together with Jade. She's, uh, very wary of pretty much everyone, really, specially the Housewardens. They're not sure if it is comforting that she is still wary of them the exact same amount after their Overblot or not. Even after she befriends them, there's always some distance as she reminds herself that it'd be very very easy for any of them to kill her with a flicker of their wrists.

Crowley lives in fear, because every five words she directs to him, five are full of scorn. He has lost count of how many times she called him incompetent, direct or indirectly. Maybe if he actually did his fuckin job–
