Hello again! I got nerdy last night and read about positrons, because I saw it being mentioned in a bad way in the show 'friends' and I had to learn more after that. So did you know, PET scans are actually 'positron emitting tomography' scans? As in they literally work by injecting you with radioactive (currently FDT which is isotopic fluorine added to glucose) and seeing it disintegrate and release positrons. Which then annihilate electrons because they are both opposites (positron is anti matter of electron). And that emits two gamma photons which are then detected by photon detecting cylinders where you are placed into. And using the two photons, the computer can then estimate the location where the FDT was, and as millions are detected we get an estimate of where glucose in the body went. This is very useful because you can basically map out where the glucose goes. If there's too much somewhere than regularly is, that can be a tumor. If there's less where there is, thats useful data in other ways. Now, the rant isnt about PET scans that are currently used. Its about PET scans that are under research to be used someday. You might've guessed it or not but I didnt when I read. So we can use glucose and add a radioactive fluorine to it to detect where glucose goes. Why not other things? And thats whats in the works. There are ways to create seratonin with this radioactive fluorine and that can help us detect where all the seratonin goes and that can be revolutionary. Imagine having a 3d map of what happens to your seratonin. You might lack receptors. You might have too many. You can now see and scan for it. We can have maps of the brain, for a lot of psychiatric drugs. From opiods to seratonin. Currently the technology is way too expensive, so even if it became readily available maybe most people who actually need that kind of scan wont be able to get it. But thats a whole thing about non free healthcare and not the fault for the amazing technology.
