while i am very proud of my apparent success in curating my the youtube algorithm so that no matter how long i leave it on autoplay it does not wind up on some random alt-right bullshit (keeps looping to like 1 of 5 detailed breakdowns of video game mechanics) i am mildly perplexed and annoyed that it has decided that I must really like hearing about submarine safety and accidents thank you youtube I don't actually want one million videos about oceangate or the USS Thresher. While I'm at it I don't really care about the in depth mechanics of Mario Party either

PSA: Consent Matters for Content Sharing
As a creator, I know that feeling of wanting people to see what you've worked so hard to make. But posting audios and videos on sites like Youtube or Soundcloud that use an algorithm to select new files to autoplay for you is just wrong. Even if you include an audio consent description, there's a chance that people who are just waking up from something else won't be able to stop the file in time. Also, just about everyday, some child discovers real adult hypnosis simply because the Youtube algorithm decides to serve it to them on autoplay. That's not cool. And it needs to stop. So, we, as responsible people on the internet, need to make people firmly aware of this and to stop supporting creators who put content where autoplay algorithms promote it. Thank you.

The Impact of Short-form Video on Brand Visibility
Introduction
In the fast-paced digital age, brands are continuously seeking innovative approaches to capture target market interest. One of the most effective equipment in current years has been quick-shape video. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have revolutionized the manner content material is ate up, supplying manufacturers a golden possibility to enhance visibility, engagement, and accept as true with.
What is Short-Form Video?
Short-form movies are commonly beneath 60 seconds lengthy and are designed to be quick, enticing, and without difficulty shareable. They cater to the reduced interest spans of nowadays’s virtual customers, turning in impactful messages in a concise layout. Why Short-Form Video Works for Brand Visibility
 1. Increased Reach Through Algorithms
Most social platforms prioritize video content—mainly brief-form—thanks to its excessive engagement fees. Their algorithms push this content material to a much wider audience, giving even small brands the chance to move viral and enhance visibility without heavy ad spend.
2. Stronger Audience Engagement
Short films are ideal for storytelling, product teasers, at the back of-the-scenes glimpses, or brief tutorials. These chunk-sized formats inspire likes, stocks, and feedback, building network and brand recognition organically.
3. High Mobile-Friendliness
With maximum users gaining access to content material through cellular devices, short-form movies match obviously into the user enjoy. Their vertical format and autoplay capabilities make it less difficult for manufacturers to grab interest on the go.
4. Cost-Effective Content Creation
Compared to standard video marketing, quick-form content frequently calls for minimum system and price range. Even cellphone videos can perform properly if they're real and attractive.
5. Remember better brand Studies
show that video materials increase retention. When users remember the message of a brand, they are more likely to change. The video of a compelling 30-second can create a permanent impression more effectively than stable images or text.
Tips to take advantage of short-form video Keep it authentic
Avoid overproduction. Viewers appreciate real, reliable materials.
Stay consistent: Regular posting creates speed and increases the visibility of the algorithm.
Use the trends wisely: Align trending audio or challenges with your brand message.
Add price: Educate, entertain or motivate - just don't sell.
Conclusion
Short-form video is no longer just a trend-it is an important component of any digital marketing strategy. As consumer behavior is developing, brands that suit short-form video formats are more likely to be relevant, connect deeply with their audiences, and stand out in crowded markets.

Relating to your post about youtube recommending you anti-lgbt content: you can use Unhook or dfyoutube to stop youtube from recommending you things. it sucks you can't block channels or block videos with dogwhistles in their title (clicking not interested never seems to work for long. I search for lgbt videos and get anti-lgbt recommendations eventually). your only options to not see that shit is to not see all recommended videos OR intestinally mess up your youtube algorithm (clearing your watch later, clearing your watch history, clicking "not interested" on everything on the home page, then autoplaying videos on a subject you feel neutral about for about an hour, then pausing your watch history). Youtube has a habit of feeding "ragebait" on purpose thus your only choices are not seeing any content or only seeing content nowhere related to lgbt content. Unfortunatly it won't let you see lgbt or feminist content in peace without showing you "anti-woke" or red-pill grifters. It sucks out here.
God the algorithm is so fucking poorly made- thanks anon, these are super helpful :DD

Sleep Token: i saw a video of them playing live on TikTok back in August 2023. i think it might have been Sugar, but now that i think about it, it might as well have been something else. i just know that it was the algorithm going 'oh, Ghost, huh? here, check this out', which is kinda funny/lucky, because i was really getting tired of TikTok after being on there for a bit, and got off practically the same time as i got into Sleep Token. i checked out their most populars on Spotify first to see if i wanted to give full albums a go or not. i started with TMBTE, was like 'yeah, okay, not bad' about the first four-?-ish songs. i didn't immediately click, but then i went back again and slowly warmed up, then went on to the other two albums. i needed a bit longer to get into the EPs and singles (October). the rest is history (/lh)
grandson: it was my 6-year grandkidversary not too long ago (fittingly on 4.20). i heard Blood//Water in a trailer for Marvel's Runaways and liked it, checked him out and Youtube autoplay guided me from there, i think. i've been around since, and more present for the release of I Love You, I'm Trying. he was also my first concert. i feel like i'm rambling here. i'm curious about the new album and where he's going and miss him quite a lot (not him him, but you get it)
Metallica: i feel like i should include them, even though it's been a while since i listened to them. Stranger Things season 4 featured Master of Puppets in 2022, i was sort of neutral about it, but there was such a buzz that i went to check out the original, then i think live performances followed, then the albums in an order i can't recall at all now. then it was a lot of Metallica for a while, but it sort of petered out since which i'm a little down about. the love is still there, though, very much so
starting a tag game because i'm bored as fuck

*old man hat* BACK IN MAH DAY, in the halcyon years before marketing algorithms drove everything, YouTube Autoplay was actually good for something.
This was back in the ancient times when, after watching episode 23 of a series, the top recommendation would be episode 24. The system was designed to assume that what you were most interested in, when watching a series, was the next episode of that series. You could put on Autoplay and be relatively assured that it will take you through the whole series.
You can't do that anymore. You have to use Playlists now, because otherwise you finish episode 23 and it's like,
YouTube: I know what you want to watch next: This video essay from a creator you like! Me: I kinda just want to keep watching my show, thanks. YouTube: Did you know this other creator you watch just released a new video? Me: I literally watched it this morning. Can I have the next episode? YouTube: Ah, I got it. You want an unrelated music video. Me: I want the show! YouTube: You want the show? Me: Yes, I want the show! YouTube: Okay, okay. I got it. Here's the show. Me: THANK YOU. YouTube: Episode 17. Me: MOTHERF--
If Silicon Valley could politely explain why their vast technological advancements keep resulting in dumber tech, maybe I'd be more inclined to listen to their opinions on things like AI and self-driving cars.

Back again! I want the top tier shit please and thank you
I listen to neurofunk and mid 2000s darkstep mainly but I listen to. liquid funk/DnB? to study
okay so i would start with the 90s: thankfully, i have a handy-dandy public youtube playlist with lots of songs on it so i'll give you the short list!
The Invisible Man -- Bell Tune Essence of Aura -- So This is Love (Omni Trio Remix) (you may know this one from a meme) Fugees -- Ready or Not (DJ Zinc Remix) Goldtrix -- It's Love [Trippin'] (OKAY YEAH THIS IS 2001 BUT WHATEVER) LTJ Bukem -- Atlantis (though he is a fucking STAPLE of the genre) Mental Power -- Dream Sequence (Back 2 Basics Remix)
As for later stuff, I'm a huge fan of Black Sun Empire and their albums Driving Insane and Cruel and Unusual, as well as a bunch of Concord Dawn's stuff like Say Your Words and Man For All Seasons! We already covered Calyx, so I shan't go on.
Other stuff that's been kicking around my playlist lately is the Rave Yard Remix of Crystal Water's classic Gypsy Woman, Nu:Logic's Morning Light, some classic Chase and Status with Hurt You, and Clare Maguire's Ain't Nobody (Breakage Remix). Dubstep-wise (or, as the youths now call it, future garage), I just covered Niels Binias, Vacant, Sorrow, and Burial all at once. Can't pick just one song for any of them, sorry! Oh, and also add Volor Flex -- Elegiac to that list too!
Okay, there's sososososo many more I could link here and I WILL resist but almost all these tracks are on my playlist and I highly recommend you let YouTube autoplay take the wheel; honestly, the algorithm is off the shits with reccs sometimes, and I've found artists I never, ever would have listened to had YouTube not had a say in it. So go forth!!!!!!!!!! and listen,

(i hope yt video is not autoplaying here?)
Yeah, thanks for this addition too! Also i am so happy to see addition from IT worker!
My point of algorithm doing math on this is that i saw in article (on the website about epilepsy) pretty much specific diapason numbers of visual characteristic which can be, as i think, easily counts by computer. But, as i said in previous reblog, it can be both? (math + community. and, well, math defined by community. nothing for us without us rule and everything)
Also thing which bothered me in tw epilepsy culture in videos nowadays is that there is no range? Like, we (content makers) just slap tw for epilepsy and that's it. I mean, tw is necessary, but we need to go further - we need range for tw! like, i have some photosensivity too, but i can handle a lot of things, and someone can't handle a 1% of that i can. And it's not cool that tw for both is the same.
So like, it would be cool to make both math and community interaction based new tw system. which can be new tw system in general
Like, it can be some settings feature, where you can see tw list addition for the video you are watching. And if you are photosensitive person and you see, for example, epilepsy tw, you can click and see some range settings, based on numbers of seizure-trigering characteristic - we can make something like movies ratings range? like, levels of sensivity? - and you can choose to skip some parts of video or not to skip, basing on your level of sensivity. And same with others tw. Smth like this!
p.s. and actually we are doing here youtube and others websites work because it should be in basic interface but they are too busy making monetization features.
I think i have things-changing idea about improving video watching experience for people with photosensitivity conditions (epilepsy, migraine, etc)
so, my friend showed me an app/plugin (idk), which can recognize sponsorship parts of videos and auto-skipping it
it looks like that in youtube design
Tumblr media
so this thing shows you the part which it can skip (red one on the picture) and well, skip it
and i thought like
we can do this for flashing lights, right?
if some dudes made algorithm, which can recognize something so complicated, i think it's definitely possible to make algorithm which simply counts frequency, intensity, area, patterns* (i mean, it's 2+2 for computer, right?), then compare it to not-harmfull diapason, and if numbers are out of it - then algorithm could make that thing on the picture above - mark it on video timeline and make an option to skip it. i would also add some addition which could show numbers and if person can handle this level of intensity - this person can choose not to skip it.
i know nothing about computers, IT and coding so, just giving idea to the world. if someone already making/made something like this - pls, tell about the project in reblogs, i will use my blog as a platform to share. if it is a thing already - great, will share too, because it should be more popular then
*i learned these terms reading article on https://www.epilepsy.com

Ok, but Alastor being an old man that doesn’t know technology being boyfriend’s with a Victorian man that taught himself how to craft lasers and code *his own damn ship computer/pocket watch phone* is so damn hilarious. Pentious tries to teach him how to use a mobile phone and he either locks himself out of the damn thing or he presses too hard on the screen and ends up skewering the damn thing with his talons.
HONESTLY. HONESTLY in the sequel to CDIH I plan on doing so much with the fact that Sir Pent is keeping up and Alastor ain’t.
Like. Like just picture. Alastor gets dragged kicking and screaming into using ~modern technology~. Once he has been dragged into using ~modern technology~, by golly, he’s going to use it to have some fun! He’s going to decide he wants to watch music videos on YouTube, which is a web site that he has heard exists. He is going to go to the URL bar. He’s going to type in “http:\\www.google.com”, he’s going to look at it thoughtfully, he’s going to squint at the two different slash keys on the keyboard, he’s going to leave the room to ask somebody which direction the slash is supposed to tilt if you are trying to go to Google Dot Com—
“you’re sure that’s the direction the slash mark is supposed to tilt SPECIFICALLY to go to GOOGLE DOT COM?” “yes, I know what I’m doing,” “no, you don’t need to come help me,” “no, I am PERFECTLY capable of going to Google Dot Com without you holding my hand, I was the king of the airwaves back before most Americans HAD radios, if I could handle the radio I can CERTAINLY handle an overpromoted typewriter, THANK you”
—and then he’s going to go back to the computer and delete the entire URL by clicking “delete” 21 separate times, he’s going to retype it as “http://www.google.com”, and then he is going to click enter.
(And please… if this is how slow and difficult it is for him to navigate to google, imagine how much time and effort someone must have spent to slowly teach him how to turn on a computer, how to open a web browser, what a web browser is for, how to highlight the address bar in order to type in a URL, what an address bar IS…)
And then he is going to click in the search bar on Google Dot Com, and he is going to type in “Hello! How do I reach You Tube?” and he is going to puzzle over the little square that says “I’m Feeling Lucky” for a moment before deciding, no, perhaps he doesn’t feel lucky today, and he’ll click on the little square that says “Google Search,” and google is going to be like,
Tumblr media
An actual link to YouTube does not appear anywhere on the first page of results. Alastor is lost. He’s adrift at sea with no sign of shore. He will never find his way to YouTube.
He looks at the little list of tabs up top like,
Tumblr media
and he dubiously clicks on Videos, because yes, the You-Tube he has been shown had videos, that’s kind of its thing. And the results are like,
Tumblr media
And he very dubiously clicks on the first one.
First it plays an ad—oh, he succeeded, he found a video!—and then it plays another ad, Alastor has no ad block, the concept of “ad block” does not exist anywhere within his understanding of the universe, and then it starts playing what looks like an old black and white movie like,
Tumblr media
Oh it’s a picture show! He found a picture show on the Internet! How wonderful! He doesn’t recognize the movie but it’s in black and white, it must have been made in his time—
And then a minute and twenty seconds into the video it FINALLY starts playing music and he’s like I DID IT I FOUND THE MUSIC VIDEOS I WAS PROMISED. He pats himself on the back, he’s great at using modern technology, he’s got this all figured out.
He’s got a little yellow pad and pencil he keeps next to the computer to jot down the “Internet addresses” of songs he likes so that he can type them into the “Internet address bar” when he wants to watch them or listen to them again later. He’s found that you have to write them down fast, even though they’re very long, because when the song ends it will move right on to the next one—just like the radio when a song ends—so if you dawdle it will vanish and you’ll never find the song again!
Guess what feature Alastor hasn’t noticed exists and doesn’t know he can turn off.
Tumblr media
Guess what other features Alastor doesn’t know about.
Tumblr media
Making an account so he can save videos.
Tumblr media
Back buttons to go back to a song if he missed the URL.
Tumblr media
The controls on a video.
If Alastor likes a song and wants to hear it twice, he clicks on the search bar and types in the whole URL one letter at a time and clicks enter to get it to re-load and play again.
And he’s got no control over this mad unhinged machine that is the YouTube algorithm system, its autoplay is like a car with a brick held down on the gas and nobody holding the steering wheel, it’s just taking Alastor wherever the fuck it wants and if it starts ducking into weird fucking videos Alastor is just going to assume that that’s how YouTube works, it’s no different from the radio, sometimes you’re scheduled for music and sometimes you’re scheduled for ads and sometimes you’re scheduled for interviews or a talk show or news or whatever.
Which means eventually if he lets this untamed shambling A.I. behemoth keep careening around wherever it wants to go, it’s going to start meandering into the niche/weird stuff. EVENTUALLY it’s going to stumble onto something off of Sir Pentious’s channel, and he’s going to open up the video sounding like a Boomer trying to sound cool, like,
youtube
(I told the link to load at 5:33 but I think it’s not going to do that on tumblr, I know you all are capable of going to 5:33 yourself because y’all are five million times more competent with computers than Alastor is, just skip to that time ok cool thanks good job)
Video opens up on Sir Pent like that and Alastor is absolutely flabbergasted that Sir Pentious is on the You Tube and then Sir Pent’s like “so I broke into another church to take a joy ride on their pipe organ, per my last video this is the song all four of my followers requested for me to play!” and he takes off like,
youtube
and Sir Pent’s trying to sound cool, ends like “Sssmasssh those like and subscribe buttons if you’d like to sssee me illegally play someone else’s pipe organ! :>” and Alastor is sitting there going I HAVE NEVER WANTED TO SMASH ANYTHING SO MUCH IN MY LIFE BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THAT.
He’s so completely shocked and awed to see a video with Sir Pentious in it that he doesn’t even remember to write down the URL, which means he will never ever find the video again.
So: Sir Pent is extremely embarrassingly trying to sound Hip & Modern while playing a 22-year-old out-of-date meme song and he’s only got four followers… but like, but like, he KNOWS the Hip & Modern lingo; AND he knows how to make, edit, and upload YouTube videos and curate a YouTube channel; and he knows how to read the comments on his videos, at least minimally engage with viewers, and keep up with who’s following him…
And meanwhile Alastor doesn’t even know the comment section exists.
Sir Pentious only looks behind the times and out of date until he is compared with the alternative.

Next week comes out X-Men: Black: Emma Frost by Leah Williams and Chris Bachalo. While I have no idea if there will be any teen X-Men in it, like with Mojo’s one shot, or if it will have any new teen characters like Magneto’s had, I have deep respect for Leah Williams and really feel she is a creator who might be what X-Men need moving forward. Also, there is the fact she is very outspoken against assholes of ComcisGate and she even talks about it in the linked article:
Williams: I dislike how dishonest it is. It’s built on lies. Comicsgate is a dwindling hate movement that, for a time, was allowed to fester unchecked within the comics community because it operated under a disingenuous pretense of “fixing” comics, because one embittered fan thought he could break into our industry by peddling hate for profit on YouTube. The figurehead is a violent snake oil salesman who uses sock puppet accounts and bots to inflate his shadow and make him seem bigger than he really is. He does these things, but he also really believes he is that significant and entitled. Youtube and Twitter, specifically, are breeding grounds for hate movements specifically because of how these platforms still allow what is actually classified as hate speech.
Youtube, uniquely, also classifies LGBTQ+ creator content as “mature” and hides it from autoplay streams or demonetizes the videos, and at the same time, the autoplay algorithm after a time doesn’t discern between something inauthentic and using keyword-salad in the titles to garner clicks, or something that is actually supposed to be there.
Simultaneously, these things work together to create an environment conducive to hatred and propagating filth. This is tangential, but this is also why you’ll see articles about those nightmarish childrens’ videos showing up in autoplay feeds–people saw the opportunity for profit and started creating these bizarre videos with adults wearing cheap Elsa or Spider-Man costumes in one video, burying someone alive. And then, other videos are being generated by an AI and output in a 3D mishmash of keyword relevancy. So you’ll find a video of Peppa the Pig sobbing while her teeth get ripped out by pliers, etc.
So back to Youtube being a breeding ground for hate movements–I mean, it’s how the alt-right got impressional young men radicalized–Comicsgate is just the latest installment of that same species of disenfranchised straight, cis white dudes who are so ruthlessly mediocre but entitled to everything regardless that they feel threatened by the very notion of diversity. With Comicsgate in particular, a deeply unhinged comics fan began making comics “review” videos that were mostly an excuse to have a platform for him to refer to trans women working in comics as “men in dresses” or any Black comics creators as “purse puppies.” He was so unwilling to look past his own failures and shortcomings that he decided there was this vast network of “SJWs” working to destroy comics from the inside out. I know that sounds absurd, and that’s because it is absolute fucking lunatic nonsense, but that’s what he believes. Youtube, because it’s Youtube, already had an audience available for this kind of hatred, so this guy was able to pick up some steam and gain enough traction that he felt even MORE entitled to writing for Marvel. He felt he deserved to write for Marvel so much that he called a female Marvel editor a “c*m dumpster” and spread rumors with his followers that she didn’t deserve her job because she slept her way to it.
It wasn’t based in the truth of course, this man just hates women. He’s been convicted of stalking women in the past. So we classify comicsgate as a hate movement because that is what it is, and because these people will attack women, trans women specifically, in targeted harassment mobs online.
Titans of the comics industry (including many of my Marvel family!!) have recently been stepping up and exposing this group for what they are, for which I am thankful. There’s a lot to dislike about Comicsgate. There’s a lot to dislike about Gamergate. The people who are vulnerable to hate movements like these are sad and empty. They have no identity or personality outside of hatred.
In both cases, they were radicalized by dishonest propaganda that one man created because despite being a failure in his chosen industry, he still felt so entitled to success that the sight of women succeeding where he had not made him lie on the internet and start a goddamn hate movement. There’s no debating members of either movement; no reasoning with them. They were impressionable to begin with, and now there’s no helping them see what really happened because anything you say will just be chalked up to a part of the vast conspiracy against them. Or they’ll take some of the resulting criticism and heat they’ve faced for their despicable actions and shove it in your face instead of listening to reason.
If you still are not convinced to pick up her books (her What If? about Magik also comes out next week) there is also a CBR interview.

Hi all! This video has recently been getting a lot of attention from the media. In some articles they are crediting me for having done something unique, but in my opinion this is unfair. Anyone can repeat this process with algorithms that are currently published on Github; all of them are in the video description. Credit should go to DIAN, Topaz AI, ESRGAN, Waifu2x, DeOldify and other developers who are part of the worldwide ML-community and contributing to humanity by making these algorithms publicly available.
Thus, for future reference, you do not need to ask my permission to use this video; you can do with it whatever you want 💖 Welcome to the future, friends

Amazing colorized footage of 1911 New York City created by genius AI
Charlotte Edwards, Digital Technology and Science Reporter
Feb 25 2020
STUNNING footage of 1911 New York has been brought to life thanks to artificial intelligence that was able to colorize it.
The YouTube video is called 'A Trip Through New York City' and shows what life was like for New Yorkers over 100 years ago.
New York's famous Flatiron Building can be seen looking almost exactly like it does now
The footage was originally shot by a Swedish film production company Svenska Biografteatern and includes hot tourist spots like the Statue of Liberty and Fifth Avenue.
YouTuber Denis Shiryaev shared the updated footage on his account.
They wrote in the caption: "Restored with neural networks 1911 New York footage taken by the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern on a trip to America."
Neural network-powered AI algorithms were used to 'upscale' the footage so all the images appear clearer, sharper and colored.
Hats were a very popular accessory back in the 1910s
Tech like this is freely available online, including Topaz Labs' Gigapixel AI and DAIN.
DAIN can enhance the frame rates of older footage, making it appear smoother.
The video in question was first released by the New York-based Museum of Modern Art back in 2018.
New York is seen with a lot fewer cars than it has today
Fans of The Great Gatsby will recognise cars like this
It was originally captured just three years before the outbreak of World War I and shows everyday in the famous American city.
New York looked very different back then, with very few cars and horse and carts still trotting along the road.
Famous landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge can be seen in the footage
The bridge used to have a lot more room for pedestrians
The fashion of the 1910's is also clear in the footage with men in long jackets and women in long dresses.
Almost everyone is seen wearing a hat.
One of the most striking things about the footage is that, although it's bustling with people, it shows a much calmer and far less busy New York than the one we know today.
The footage also features New York Harbour
Are you impressed by the colorized footage of old New York?
Let us know in the comments...

What is artificial intelligence?
Here's what you need to know...
Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, is a type of computer software
Typically, a computer will do what you tell it to do
But artificial intelligence simulates the human mind, and can make its own deductions, inferences or decisions
A simple computer might let you set an alarm to wake you up
But an AI system might scan your emails, work out that you’ve got a meeting tomorrow, and then set an alarm and plan a journey for you
AI tech is often “trained” – which means it observes something (potentially even a human) then learns about a task over time
For instance, an AI system can be fed thousands of photos of human faces, then generate photos of human faces all on its own
Some experts have raised concerns that humans will eventually lose control of super-intelligent AI
But the tech world is still divided over whether or not AI tech will eventually kill us all in a Terminator-style apocalypse

A Trip Through New York City in 1911 – Gloriously Restored and Colorized Footage
New York 1911 4k restoration Mar 4, 2020 Steve Palace
A YouTube wizard has given vintage footage of New York a serious 4k upgrade. Want to take a historic trip to the Big Apple? Denis Shiryaev has used Artificial Intelligence to upscale old New York footage, showing the city streets like never before in glorious 4K.
Made in 1911, ‘A Trip Through New York City’ is one of the many treasures at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). Before it was grainy and black and white. Shiryaev and his online toolkit have transformed it into a ride full of colors, combined with the resolution you’d expect from a 21st century film. The film now plays at 60 frames per second.
The technological feat was performed using Gigapixel AI from Topaz Labs, and DAIN – Depth-Aware Video Frame Interpolation. They are algorithims powered by neural networks, or put simply computers designed like primitive brains.
According to Topaz’s website, Gigapixel AI “uses the power of Topaz’s proprietary Artistic Intelligence engine to make sharper and clearer upscaled images more than traditional upscaling tools”. It reportedly makes over a million calculations when working on each individual pixel. For the layman, the take away is that it’s complicated but it works!
New York 1911
Wenbo Bao of Shanghai Jiao Tong University says that the DAIN process “aims to synthesize non-existent frames in-between the original frames.” Overall, AI respects the original source while giving it a very modern treatment, fleshing it out digitally and adding new dimensions which create an extraordinary effect.
‘A Trip Through New York City’ was originally made by Svenska Biografteatern, a company from Sweden who traveled the world committing its wonders to celluloid. The result was pretty impressive in its original version. MoMA describes the production. “Opening and closing with shots of the Statue of Liberty, the film also includes New York Harbor; Battery Park and the John Ericsson statue”.
Ericsson was an American engineer born in Sweden. Among his many achievements was designing USS Princeton, America’s first steam-frigate with a screw propeller. On a smaller scale, what appears to be a steamship emblazoned ‘Rosedale’ is among the sights offered by the 8 minute movie.
MoMA, who performed their own restoration on the footage, also mentions “the elevated railways at Bowery and Worth Streets; Broadway sights like Grace Church and Mark Cross; the Flatiron Building on Fifth Avenue; and Madison Avenue.”
On a more aesthetic note, they observe the film’s “casual, almost pastoral quality that differs from the modernist perspective of later city-symphony films like Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler’s Manhatta (1921).”
This vivid journey back in time depicts a metropolis that was similar in many ways. While the Ericsson statue and of course Lady Liberty remain unchanged, and the famous Flatiron Building is unmistakable, there have of course been changes over the past hundred or so years.
Roads for example. “The streets in 1911 were lined with trolley tracks and were mostly bustling with buggies,” notes the Daily Mail, “but a few cars were used on the roads by the upper class.” Their article also refers to Herald Square. “In the film, the New York Herald Building is seen but the building no longer exists” the Mail writes. ”The area is still known as Herald Square, but it’s now full of restaurants and shopping stores.”
Developer Shiryaev has form for this type of project. He also upscaled the Lumiere Brothers’ ‘Arrivée d’un train à la Ciota’ (‘Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat’) from 1895. When the film was first projected it reportedly frightened audiences, who believed the onscreen train might fly out into the theater.
Eager restorers have also set their sights on the future – to be more precise, Star Trek shows from the Nineties. Some fans are unhappy with the picture quality offered by home entertainment releases and streaming services, and are using AI tech themselves to upscale adventures aboard Deep Space Nine.
“I’m not going to claim that upscaling like this simply makes Deep Space Nine look like it was shot in modern times,” writes the Extreme Tech site, which explored what the process could do for Benjamin Sisko and crew. “The color reproduction is bad in all cases and no matter how good an upscaling algorithm is, it’s still an upscaler — and therefore not the same as having the original data via 35mm film.”
Similar criticism has also been leveled at Shiryaev’s restoration. The clue is in the name – “Artificial” Intelligence. While it’s impossible to fully appreciate the sights of the past without a time machine, this 4K slice of New York footage magic is surely the next best thing.

Artificial Intelligence Brings New Life to a 1911 Film About Life in New York City
By Megan Cooper on July 26, 2020
Black-and-white and Colorized Versions of Historic New York City Scene
Imagine the streets of New York City at the turn of the 20th century. Horse-drawn buggies share the road with brightly colored automobiles. Women, donning large bustles and matching millinery, amble beside their suited beaus as they make their way into department stores. Now you can see these historic scenes (and many more) brought to colorful life thanks to YouTuber Denis Shirayaev and his work spent restoring a short black-and-white film titled A Trip Through New York City.
Also known as New York 1911, the footage documents everyday life in the Big Apple as captured by the Swedish newsreel company Svenska Biografteatern. It was first restored and displayed by the Museum of Modern Art for a 2017 exhibition of Svenska's entire travelogue series.
Shiryaev edited the film even more by increasing its framerate to 60 frames per second, turning the resolution to 4K, and enhancing its sharpness. These tweaks make the film feel more representative of the real world, but it’s his colorization that takes it to another level. To add the hues, Shiryaev used Deoldify, which is an open-source AI tool that takes black-and-white images and converts them to color.
Look for iconic sites like the Flatiron Building and Battery Park when you watch A Trip Through New York City below.

Here’s something rather cool for your Monday morning: as part of its push to showcase more of its collection digitally, the Museum of Modern Art recently added a short film, “New York 1911,” to its website, where it’ll be available through July 14.
The nine-minute silent film documents a day (or more) in the life of New York City circa 1911, with surprisingly clear black-and-white footage showing a city on the cusp of change. It was filmed by Svenska Biografteatern, a Swedish company that, according to MoMA, traveled “around the world to make pictures of well-known places,” including Niagara Falls and Paris.
The filmmakers did a pretty good job of seeing a wide swath of the city (well, of Manhattan, anyway), capturing the then-brand new Manhattan Bridge, the Flatiron Building, Park Row in the Financial District, and other landmarks. There are also plenty of long-gone sights, too—we spotted the Singer Building, demolished in 1968, as well as the very unusual sight of elevated trains riding over the Brooklyn Bridge.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to have lived a century ago, or to have wandered the streets of a much younger New York City, you’ll be amazed by this found footage from 1911.
The film is filled with clear images that make old Manhattan feel almost close enough to touch.
Shot in various locations around the city, it offers a fascinating look at what daily life was like during the midst of society’s transition from horse-drawn carriages to motorcars.
As a result, the streets are filled with a chaotic assemblage of carriages and cars, trolleys and pedestrians. What you won’t see in these street scenes are traffic lights, stop signs, lane lines or crosswalks.
These views were made possible thanks to cameramen working for Svenska Biografteatern, a Swedish film company that operated between 1907 and 1919. The original nitrate print of the film managed to survive this past century in stellar condition, which allowed it to be restored by NYC’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
While the actual footage had no audio, ambient and background sounds were added to give the film a lifelike atmosphere. The frame rate was also slowed from the original to restore it to a more natural speed (compared to the jerky super-fast silent film look).

How to Grow Your YouTube Channel? 10  Ways
Tumblr media
There's no denying that video marketing has become more popular and accessible to businesses in recent years. Despite the fact that popular platforms such as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even your own website are excellent places to invest, YouTube continues to be the market leader. Individuals spend a billion hours every day watching material on the internet. If you know a few tactics, YouTube, nicknamed the world's "second largest search engine," will help the videos be discovered quickly and deeply interacted with.
Here are 10 ways to grow your YouTube channel:
Upload to YouTube at least once a week
Recent studies show that YouTube channels that upload more than once a week perform significantly better and receive significantly more suggested views.
If you're just getting started and trying to build an audience, aim to upload a video to YouTube three or more times every week. Maintaining a weekly posting schedule of multiple posts will quickly improve your channel's algorithm rating.
Creating a big volume of content on similar subjects early on will help the channel do well in the algorithm and establish a catalog of content that will move viewers from one video to the next, increasing their viewing duration and encouraging them to subscribe.
Create a video production workflow that will last
Even if you're generating Oscar-worthy short films and videos, if each one takes six months to make, your YouTube channel won't grow. People return because there are consistent video uploads at predetermined times.
Choose material for any films you want to make that you can generate and build on a daily basis, and identify ways to streamline the production process, whether it's by setting up a workshop, constructing an editing prototype, or hiring assistance or a production team. Continue to fine-tune the subjects and production procedure until you've got a well-oiled machine.
Each video should begin with an engaging hook
It's up to you and your content to pique people's interest. If a video includes a project of any kind, show the completed product first. People are interested in learning how you arrived at such a remarkable result. In DIY and makeover shows, this strategy works wonderfully.
Telling a narrative is another approach to get people's attention. People are wired to tell stories from the moment they are born. If you start your video with a plot, people will naturally want to stick around to watch what occurs. Personal experiences also endear the host to the audience and provide a useful segue to more sophisticated subjects.
It'd be nice if you kept titles and opening credits to a minimum
The attention span of the ordinary human is only a few seconds. If a video begins with a lengthy title or credit sequence, viewers may lose interest. People don't want to watch the same long series over and over, therefore a protracted first episode deters binge watching.
Instead, keep the opening title and credits short and sweet. Allow the opener to last for at least 5 seconds.
To promote your videos, channel, or website, include end screens
End screens are animated graphics that link viewers to another video, playlist, channel, or website, or encourage them to subscribe to your channel. As the feature name implies, you can only include end screens in the last 20 seconds of the film, so you'll need to think about where they'll start.
One option is to structure the content of your video in such a way that end screens are available. The viewer's interest will be maintained if you talk over the end screen.
Alternatively, where the end screens will be placed, you should install a slate with an icon or logo. Choose choice if you don't want the end screen to interfere with your content.
Create thumbnails that will entice YouTube consumers to watch your video More than anything else, thumbnails have the potential to make or damage your YouTube career. What is the rationale for this? Videos that have been recommended.
The most popular source of organic traffic on YouTube is suggested videos. While someone is watching a video on YouTube, the video thumbnail must stand prominent when it is in the right sidebar as a recommended video. When YouTube recommends your video, it's essentially marketing it by insinuating that someone viewing another video could also appreciate yours.
Make the thumbnail relevant to the video's title and content. The quickest way to cause visitors to click away is to show a video that has nothing to do with the thumbnail. The audience believes they have been duped. Not only will you alienate your audience, but you'll also have insufficient viewing time, which is the most important element in the YouTube algorithm.
Try to describe a storyline with your thumbnails. Show a picture that establishes or teases the scene. Allow the audience to be intrigued by what will happen next or what has already occurred.
Many users utilize the 1280 x 720 pixel video thumbnail size that YouTube recommends. Although the images are stunning, no one on YouTube ever sees a thumbnail that small.
FS Poster is a powerful auto-posting plugin with a lot of features. You will be able to post your blogs immediately to 15 social media networks from WordPress. Try out our Demo version.
Make videos longer to enhance the amount of time people spend watching them
Even if you wish to keep your credits brief, make your actual video material as long as it makes sense for your subject. Making extended videos seems counterintuitive given the famously poor attention spans on the internet. Shorter videos were thought to be superior. Longer videos, on the other hand, result in more watch time, which increases the amount of content in the algorithm.
Finally, the optimum video length is just long enough to convey all of the relevant information without becoming excessive. If you make a video longer only for the sake of making it longer, you will lose viewers. You should, however, prepare your video content with lengthier videos in mind.
To expand your YouTube channel, try going live Live-streaming is a smart method to get a lot of information out there without putting in a lot of effort. While live-streaming has a steep learning curve, once you've mastered the format, it's the simplest way to create video content.
Live broadcasting is increasingly recognized across all social media platforms. Because you can speak directly to your viewers in this video type, it allows for a lot of interaction. Live video also has a property of long watch times.
You may start broadcasting live footage with your smartphone or a webcam. In addition, webcams that are relatively inexpensive will produce high-quality film.
Collaborate with other YouTubers Collaborations are films generated by other content creators, and they're one of the most successful ways to expand your YouTube audience. Working with another content creator, whether it's a business or a YouTuber (or both! ), will bring new viewers to your channel.
People are heavily influenced by social evidence. When one content creator collaborates with another, their audience interprets the collaboration as a recommendation. A viewer can try out your channel in as little as a few seconds, and if they like what they see, you've got a new subscriber.
People frequently overlook the reality that YouTube is primarily a social networking tool. Some of the most well-known developers become well-known as a result of collaboration and cross-promotion. It's tempting to let your competitive side take over when you see a platform receiving more attention or developing quicker than yours. Instead, consider their achievement as an opportunity for you to grow with them.
If you want collaborators with recognizable audiences but distinct material, ask your fans who else they enjoy viewing and search for names and shared videos in the comments.
Collaborations do not have to be limited to two individuals. Different producers may collaborate on animations to obtain exposure to a wider audience.
The larger your platform becomes and the more relationships you develop, the more opportunities for multi-creator collaborations will arise. Many of the more prominent YouTube channels do this on a regular basis since the other producers become friends with them and hang out with them in person.
Create video series
Binge-watching is a terrific method to get more viewing time out of a show. Finally, you want your viewers to be able to "lean back" as they transition from one video to the next. Series playlists, an underappreciated feature on YouTube, are one of the best ways to do this. However, you'll need to employ them in a specific order.
You may build a series that focuses on high-performing content. Indeed, numerous popular YouTube channels have multiple episodes, each with its own focus on the subject and thumbnail image type.
When you share videos from your series, you can create a series playlist. If you use a sequence playlist, YouTube will automatically add the next video in the playlist to the Up Next section at the top of the suggestions. If a viewer's computer has autoplay turned on, the videos in your series playlist will play one after the other.
Conclusion
To expand your YouTube channel, you must create YouTube content with your audience and the algorithm in mind. Make sure your thumbnails grab people's attention and deliver on what you said you'd do. Start your videos with a strong hook and modify the material to keep it intriguing. Overall, you want to create an atmosphere that encourages viewers to keep watching.
Thanks to the YouTube algorithm, boosting the number of clicks and keeping people interested boosts the exposure of your videos and, as a result, your website. Engaging content that encourages viewers to push the play button and results in a long viewing period and session length will increase the number of views for your YouTube videos.
