“Rilla felt flattered by Irene’s condescension. She was an Upper Glen girl of nineteen who seemed to like the society of the younger girls—spiteful friends said because she could queen it over them without rivalry.”

This awakened a memory of a girl I knew in high school who was only friends with underclassmen as a senior and had a little gaggle of freshmen following her around at all times. (She wasn't mean, to my memory, but she could be a little condescending, which...might explain that.) Anyway! Very apt and observant of LMM here, the way Rilla is too young and wants approval from people she admires too badly to catch that Irene's friendship isn't sincere.

“Was he coming to her—was he?—was he?—yes, he was!”

In awe of LMM's ability to capture how breathless and excited Rilla is in prose, even though all this drama over Ken is like. lol. Pretty much the entire chunk of the chapter where Rilla is with Ken is so delightfully written -- the rollercoaster of emotion, Rilla wanting to fling herself into the rocks the second she slightly embarrasses herself, it's all really funny but also so real for a teenager.

"Canoodling" dates back to the 1860s, the more you know.

“Kenneth was a tall lad, very good looking, with a certain careless grace of bearing that somehow made all the other boys seem stiff and awkward by contrast. He was reported to be awesomely clever, with the glamour of a faraway city and a big university hanging around him. He had also the reputation of being a bit of a lady-killer. But that probably accrued to him from his possession of a laughing, velvety voice which no girl could hear without a heartbeat, and a dangerous way of listening as if she were saying something that he had longed all his life to hear. “Is this Rilla-my-Rilla?” he asked in a low tone.”

First of all -- LMAO at Ken swooping in and calling her "Rilla-my-Rilla" -- sometimes I wonder if he actually is a 'lady-killer', as LMM says, because the text really only says that he has that reputation, and it's maybe not even true. But showing up and calling a girl you've barely had a real conversation with "yours" (via nickname) is such a "how you doing" kind of move, lmao -- and then it's followed by Ken thinking about how Rilla is going to be "the beauty of the Ingleside girls after all", which comes off a bit like he's got some kind of running internal question over which Blythe girl is the hottest. Idk, maybe it felt less weird at the time it was written, but it doesn't make a great first impression now! (Sometimes I feel bad joking that he and Rilla are a terrible couple, because his biggest crime in the majority of the book is just being underdeveloped [insert he's just ken joke here], but...yeah, he doesn't come off particularly romantic here, SORRY KEN.)

“So she looked down; and as her lashes were very long and dark and her lids very thick and creamy”

idk what to make of the thickness of Rilla's eyelids apparently being something Ken is into. sure, why not

“Kenneth talked to her as he had talked to Nan and Di.”

...okay, sure, but what about? I am intrigued because as we know, Rilla isn't as educated, or even interested in being as educated, as Nan or Di (or Ken, who's in college). Do they read the same books? Have any of the same interests? Have a similar sense of humor where they can talk about nothing for a while? We never see them sustain a conversation at all, I don't think. (For that matter, what does Rilla even talk to other boys about, actually?)

“‘A merry lilt o’ moonlight for mermaiden revelry,’” quoted Kenneth softly from one of Walter’s poems.”

For the longest time I thought LMM had just made up a line and thrown it in, as this poem doesn't appear in The Blythes are Quoted. However, it's from "The Sea-Shell", which is in a collection called A World of Songs. (Overall interesting choice to quote her brother's poems at her as a form of flirting, lol, although given how Rilla thinks Walter is a better poet than Wordsworth/Tennyson…fair enough, Ken.) (Also, does Walter send Ken his poems or something? Would track with Ken's father being a novelist, and the book later mentions that Ken himself has a gift for writing.)

“[Gertrude] had enjoyed the party herself, after all, for she had foregathered with a Charlottetown acquaintance who, being a stranger and much older than most of the guests, felt himself rather out of it, and had been glad to fall in with this clever girl who could talk of world doings and outside events with the zest and vigour of a man.”

"the zest and vigor of a man" ohhhh boy, I have nothing to add except this is indeed a line.

“A girl’s laugh drifted up from the rocks and died away as if frightened out of existence by the sudden stillness.”

This line is so evocative, you can almost hear it. And here we go, England has declared war on Germany.

“Do you think a war for which Germany has been preparing for twenty years will be over in a few weeks?” said Walter passionately. “This isn’t a paltry struggle in a Balkan corner, Harvey. It is a death grapple. Germany comes to conquer or to die. And do you know what will happen if she conquers? Canada will be a German colony.”

Walter referring to the war as something Germany's been preparing for, and something they have to win lest they be turned into a German colony, feels like an unusual perspective from him. So much of his fear of war is very...general; he's afraid of the violence and ugliness that mars all wars, of the heartbreak the war will bring regardless of who they're fighting -- so it's just interesting to see him actually frame it geopolitically. Wasn't aware he cared about German politics like that! (or that he didn't care about the Balkans like that, jeez.)

I've always understood, like, intellectually that people thought WWI would be over quickly, but I think what really put it into perspective for me was when Russia invaded Ukraine -- obviously not an exact parallel, but I remember idly scrolling Twitter and seeing tons of "Hahaha Russia is going to learn why America doesn't have free healthcare!!!!" jokes and it really struck me like, oh, people were this certain about Britain's military strength and place in the world order in 1914. (And of course, Mary and Miller are the "nothing ever happens" crowd in the corner.)

Ken, like Jem, brings up the war being a family affair, although he seems a little less romantic about it -- more like he's stating the facts of their relationship rather than Jem actively identifying them as England's "cubs". (Although a cut line in Readying Rilla does have Ken saying, "If somebody attacked a fellow's mother", which is then cut off. Interesting direct parallel to Walter jumping Dan Reese for insulting Anne -- and Faith -- in Rainbow Valley.) Jem is actually apparently the most patriotic of the boys, seeing as he's trying to get the Union Jack hoisted as soon as the war is announced.

“Sure I would. You see they’ll go by thousands. Jem’ll be off, I’ll bet a cent—Walter won’t be strong enough yet, I suppose. And Jerry Meredith—he’ll go! Oh, boys! And I was worrying about being out of football this year!”

(The fact that Rilla doesn't grasp the magnitude of the war at all and is timidly asking Ken if it's going to matter to them reeeeeeally brings into relief the differences in their life stages ://// Also, Ken says "Oh, boys!" re: Jem and Jerry enlisting and I just cannot read that as like, a normal thing that anyone would say.)

“Down on the rocks with Jen and Mollie Crawford. Oh, why didn’t they look for me?”

Rilla's then mentioned to be hanging out on the rocks with some "over-harbor friends", apparently Jen and Mollie Crawford?? I wish the book sketched out any of her friendships beyond Gertrude and Irene -- even Una's friendship with her isn't very developed.

“Oh well, you’ll know more about men when you’re as old as I am,” said Mary patronizingly. “Mind you, it doesn’t do to believe all they tell you. Don’t let Ken Ford think that all he has to do to get you on the string is to drop his handkerchief. Have more spirit than that, child.” To be thus hectored and patronized by Mary Vance was unendurable!”

I will say, Mary miiiiight just know what she's talking about re: men, given that Jem was kissing her and Faith in the same week 💀

(I do like that Mary's "not unkind" when helping Rilla! Idk, she is abrasive and obnoxious buuut I find the Blythes to be kind of two-faced about her, lol, like they hang out with her then turn around all, "Well we don't even like her, she's just a habit of ours" -- like, nobody in this friendship is acting right, so I always like when the narration dials back on the negativity around her.)

There's a cut line of Ethel Reese saying that Selwyn Ken Ford is "so dashing and citified", lol.

In a cut line, Rilla also fears that Selwyn Ken will call her "Miss Rilla" in a mocking way, among his other teasing nicknames.

Selwyn Ken quoting "The Sea-Shell" was originally not in the draft and added later.

@melodypowers65 pointed out that Ken was already named Ken in Rainbow Valley, so where did Selwyn come from, actually? I want to say I've read somewhere that Selwyn was meant to be a different character (like a Ford cousin?) but I could be making that up entirely. Possible credence to the theory that Rilla was already in the works when LMM was writing Rainbow Valley too? (Although it would be hilarious if Ken was so forgettable that LMM didn't realize that she'd already given him a name. We've finally found someone she forgets more than Shirley.)

Walter originally says "every man woman and child" will feel it (the effects of the war), and then "in Canada" was specified later, which strikes me as funny. It was a world war, LMM, you were right the first time!!

Harvey Crawford (originally called "Laurie" for some reason?) originally says the war will be "over before Christmas" (which is then changed to "in a month or two"). "Over by Christmas" is of course the common phrase associated with how short people thought the war would be, it seems like LMM had it on the mind, but maybe changed it for being too on the nose?

The original reason Jem leaves the party early is because "Faith was tired of the doing thing" (???), which is changed to "Una had a headache." Me too, Una 😔

SUCH AN INTERESTING QUESTION!! i KNOW for certain i'm missing a bunch, because there's so much casual cynicism EVERYWHERE that it can be hard to sort them. BUT there are definitely some that come to mind...

Fresh Airedale may be one of the most cynical cartoons i've ever seen in my life LOL. it's a brilliant short! but very bleak--i posted some clips of it a few years ago and talked about it briefly, but the short, which has a guy abusing his poor helpless cat and fawning over his dog who is also abusing the cat and taking credit for the good deeds that the cat is trying to do for his owner to win him over, ends a very unsubtle metaphor with the scale of justice toppling over and landing on the cat's head to basically say that justice never serves those who need it most

every one of the Three Bears shorts LOL. if i recall correctly, the Bears shorts weren't received well by audiences at the time because they missed the appeal of what should be a cloyingly cute family being completely dysfunctional and miserable. Bear Feat may be the most cynical considering it has Papa Bear gleefully attempting to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff... and also has this LMAO

ON THE TOPIC OF SUICIDE! Porky has attempted suicide in two cartoons and is heavily implied to have succeeded in one, the ending to Notes to You, which i posted here in discussing some of the darkest endings to a LT short.

but as a whole, Porky's Romance is definitely the more top to bottom cynical short in that Petunia rejects his marriage proposal by laughing in his face (thanks to her shitty dog that trips him), Porky tries to hang himself, can't even get that because the tree snaps beneath his weight and so he instead has a concussion-induced nightmare where he marries Petunia who is abusive and slovenly and awful. AND his license plate calls him a boob. and i know this is hard to believe, but Frank Tashlin, who directed this film, has talked about how he hated working with "the damn pig". shocking! and yet this short is what made me fall in love with Porky by being my introduction to him as an adult. guilty pleasure short because it's definitely Misogyny the Cartoon but i love it. i'm reclaiming it

plus it gave us one of my favorite endings to any cartoon (Porky punting her shitty dog)

Porky's Bear Facts is maybe the most cynical adaptation of The Grasshopper and the Ant, which basically has the moral "if people haven’t earned their keep, then they’re not worth helping at all seeing as they’ll only take advantage of your hospitality and will be complicit in any potential sloth that arises thereafter, running the risk of repeating the entire ordeal all over again, so why bother?". but, also, it is ridiculously entertaining and another short i love ferociously. maybe the ending linked below (6:18 if timestamp doesn't work) makes more sense within the context of the short (which you should watch) but the bookend to the beginning with the song is just. chef's kiss

the end of Catch as Cats Can is so dark that they ended up cutting it, probably because it's like... cruel LOL BUT I WISH THEY KEPT IT IN SOOOOO MUCH. but the short is about a Bing Crosby parrot trying to trick Sylvester into eating a Frank Sinatra parrot. the tables are turned and Sylvester ends up eating the Crosby parrot--there's a gag that was cut that was gonna have a shot of the Crosby parrot's tombstone that read "CAME IN BEFORE HIS HORSE"--there are a ton of jokes in various WB shorts about Bing Crosby's horse coming in last and being very slow (such as in The Old Gray Hare where Elmer and Bugs travel to the futuristic year of 2000 and it's revealed that Crosby's horse still hasn't come in yet). Bing already tried to sue them for two cartoons in the '30s so i guess they felt the ending was pushing it, but DAMN do i wish they kept it because it's SO FUNNY

i was very surprised to find people saying that Canned Feud was mean and cynical on Letterboxd when i recently rewatched it!! that's one of my all time favorite Sylvester shorts and one of his best, i think it's absolutely hilarious but i guess i can see why people are put off by it... a mouse keeps purposefully depriving Sylvester of the can opener when he's stuck in the house with only canned food for two weeks. it doesn't have the dark bite as other shorts mentioned here, at least to me, but i'll bring it up anyway since some people were evidently very chafed by it

Each Dawn I Crow is worth mentioning, and i'm SO HAPPY IT GOT RESTORED BECAUSE IT IS A MASTERPIECE. it's a very unique LT short that plays out like a radio play--a neurotic rooster thinks that Elmer is planning to kill him, and the tone of the short mimics that neuroticism all throughout. very suspenseful and dark and SO FUNNY, because it devolves into the rooster trying to get Elmer killed. there's this amazing bit where the rooster fashions a hat for Elmer that has a duck decoy on top, intending for a bunch of duck hunters to shoot Elmer full of holes, and Elmer just completely accepts it with no thought in his head and i can't articulate it it's just so funny and i lose it every time i see it.

i sadly don't have the full clip on me, but this is just masterful

THERE ARE MANY MORE I CAN LIST, mostly Freleng cartoons LOL but i've spent too long typing this up! Chuck Jones' Chow Hound and Freleng's Stooge for a Mouse (another one of my favorite Sylvesters) also come to mind. they're definitely the two directors who excelled at cynicism the most, and there is no shortage of it to be found

TADC EP 5 SPOILER and discussion 😟

This probably isn’t a hot take and I don’t mean this in a offensive tone but I’m kind of sick of people thinking Ragatha’s “mean” or that Jax’s attitude towards her is valid. It absolutely is not 🤓- and I of course love a playfully mean or sarcastic character sometimes but there’s being playful mean where it’s clear to everyone you’re just joking and everyone’s laughing and then there’s bullying and tormenting. If the person you’re “playing with” with isn’t laughing or looks hurt- stop. And Jax treated Ragatha terribly- especially this episode. I get for some how being overly kindness can be seen “untrustworthy”(I personally think it depends and vibes and circumstances matter as well. But in general someone being incredibly nice or even putting your feelings first isn’t usually to get stuff from you- but again, it depends on each situation and person 🙂‍↕️) but that’s HIS problem, not hers and do I think some of her kindness is from her trying not to be like her mom? Yes but I think it’s also genuinely who she is and she wants to be someone people can love and think of as kind someone who can make people feel better, but I will say she needs to be more honest with both herself and everyone else- the problem is that it’s starting to isolate herself and sacrifice her own feelings for others. Jax deserved to get yelled at and more out tbh😐 and that’s why it annoyed me so badly when Pomni was like “okay let’s calm down 😰” to ragatha- GIRL, NO! 😤She didn’t say anything when it came to Jax bullying eveyone else- including herself(except her calling him an a-h*le) but now that y’all “bonded” Ragatha yelling at him is too much? Okay girl 😒 i get it wasn’t the best time- but it’s not like the place they were at was even real or public so let her have five minutes PLEASE 😫!!! And literally I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face- I’m not even kidding 😊 I understand it can be hard for Jax to trust ragatha because for him he sees it as her being fake kind so she can get something in return, but despite that do we all really think that warranted his behavior? How would we all feel if we had very traumatic family issues that made us force oursleves to be perfect all the time and be scared of how people think of us and someone comes along, prays on that and pushes our buttons and makes us try to be like them so they can get the satisfaction and ability to say “oh, so you’re not so kind after all 😋” 🤨

I like Jax when he’s being nice and real- and I’m rooting for him to be a truly good guy and turn his life around before he’s fully isolated but he literally needs to get a grip 😒 and Ragatha deserves to give him a good 👊(and so do I 🙂‍↕️mhm) and I bet he wouldn’t like that too much 😊

And when he got the maid dress(first of all he looked great 👍) i get he was embarrassed but it was funny and satisfying 😌 and when Jax was freaking out I was like “oh what’s wrong? 🥹 oh you’re upset? I thought being mean was funny! 😄 HAHA 🫵LOSER!! THAT’S WHAT YOU GET!” But genuinely he looked so cute in it and he should wear dresses in the future😊(again- I’m not saying that in a weird way, okay! 👍)

'the gaang finds out about zuko's scar' is a great ao3 tag, and I'm very glad that it's a gift for ao3 and not something that happened in the actual show

zuko's scar reminds me of toph's blindness, and how her parents defined her by it, while the gaang goes the exact opposite route and FORGETS that she's blind ALL THE TIME. and toph makes jokes about it! she sets them up to make fools of themselves because she thinks it's funny!

zuko says that he used to think his scar defined him, and you can see why - whenever it's brought up in the show, it's in a bad way. people are always using it against him, as if it's HIS fault that his father's an abusive piece of shit. as if that's ZUKO'S problem and not his DAD'S

the gaang don't do this shit. AT ALL. aang doesn't react to azula's mockery, doesn't agree that it's funny, but three minutes later he thinks it's hilarious that azula calls zuko zuzu. like toph being blind, it's just a part of who zuko is to them. honestly, I think it barely registers sometimes. and that's GOOD, when you contrast it against how this topic is usually treated and how that must make zuko feel. it strikes me as so much more respectful that none of them ever pry

I believe the only time zuko talks about his scar, instead of having it be talked about, is in the catacombs with katara. so I do believe he'd be okay with talking to them about it once they're actually friends. but I really, really like how we don't actually get to see that. zuko comes to terms with the fact that it was cruel and it was wrong for himself, confronts his father, and then... doesn't mention it to the gaang. doesn't use it as leverage to get into the group, doesn't use it to try to convince aang to kill ozai, nothing like that. because zuko can be self-absorbed at times, but he doesn't have a manipulative bone in his body. azula would absolutely use something like that, even if it's a weakness. but zuko needs to address it on his own terms, or he won't address it at all

blamore uttered a soft 'okay' before flexing his fingers a few times, admittedly not quite sure what he should do with his hands now. so thankfully, harley seemed to decided that for it by putting her hand over its own. even in annecy... most exclusively among parisians, because unfortunately, some of them gave people living there a bad name in general — blamore had gotten made fun of several times for his accent and treated differently from other people. which was weird, because to it, its voice sounded normal as all of its family had southern french accents and that meant the musicality of it was too.

but blamore had learned rather quickly from his father that those who made fun of him usually just wanted to either feel better about themselves in some way, or were simply mean. so he stood up for himself and that stopped a majority of the bullies as he was no longer a quote unquote 'easy target.' in any case, however, blamore truly did like harley for who she was at her core; including for her accent. it didn't think she sounded funny and it wanted to be there for her for as long as she'd have it. blamore just hoped that that would be a long time, because he didn't think he'd been this in love with anyone else before, even with erich. now was it just him or did it seem like something might be on harley's mind?

he tilted his head, confused as he saw nothing wrong with getting ready with her at the surface. ❝ uhh... okay, great. i mean, if you're worried about me possibly distracting you or something and making us late to the event, we could take turns getting ready if you want. i know that with how pretty you are, i may just get lost in your eyes a few times, ❞ blamore couldn't help but giggle as he joked around with her and listened to the other ask him about whether his gender might change things. it rose both of its eyebrows in considering, humming, ❝oh. you know, i haven't really thought about that before. but well, isn't bisexual an umbrella term for all genders... ? ❞ he had noticed that harley had gone a bit slack against him then when he whispered to her.

though, it didn't think much of it. blamore snorted at the mention of pigs, ❝ wow, i am so glad you asked. i actually borrowed a trained dog to truffle hunt but don't tell anyone. ❞ he said this in an amused tone, nodding at the mention of it being a strange world. the creature listened to the other speak and, while it was confused at first about why harley said she might come off as creepy, a light blub felt like it went off in its head soon enough. ❝ oh... did you mean it as like a sex thing? like, lingerie? because if you're planning on wearing something revealing then you should let me know. that way, we can match, ❞ blamore wasn't appalled by the topic at all, assuming that that was what harley truly meant by that.

it would make sense as to why she asked him specifically if he got excited at the idea of picking things out for her. blamore winked at harley before he chuckled at the way she mentioned the truffles, calling over to her, ❝ its not! its even more priceless than those weird little things, trust me. ❞ once it reached its laundry area, it pulled out a bag it had hid in between its washer and dryer. blamore soon returned to the day bed with the gift bag before pulling out two pairs of hello kitty pajama pants from it. they were matching, but just in different colors. he was grinning ear-to-ear as he asked her.

❝ eh, eh? what do you think? i thought it'd be a cute idea for us to have something matching that we could lounge around in in the greenhouse, or your house, or what-not. this one is pink and the other one's white! you can pick which one you want, as i don't mind having either color. ❞

"You aren't... personal experiences is how we relate. Trust me...," she said before putting a hand over his. The more she thought on it French had roots in Creole as it was a blend of French and Spanish. To her it was a stretch and personally something she figured a person that was untraveled might say, but to her the way in which he spoke was captivating. Her accent had been masked as to not sound unprofessional. Harley could hear the tapes play in her head on correcting her speech. I find the wine extraordinary, turn tape over to continue reciting. She laughed at how hard it once been to seem perfect or to fit in. In many ways that may have been why Joker won her over. He wanted the raw unfiltered cut and it was enough...for once she was enough.

At his words she smiled bashfully looking down that he would be there. Again her heart swelled with pride that she was building on something, and wasn't required to change because she didn't quite tick a box.

"Oooh you want to get ready together. Can... do," she said hesitantly as she had not come clean with being scared she'd cling or get aroused by it. "Ughhh yeah I am bi... but you tell me what I am? I like you... so does that change things? ," she asked playfully swaying before making her way back to the day bed, where she finally plucked up the courage on what had been running through her mind that week.

When Balmore leaned in to whisper, Harley melted. She wondered if he had picked up on this as the conversation wasn't entirely one you'd think of being alluring. "OH shit ...did you get a pig for truffle huntin'?" Harley turned abruptly only to see the same empty floorboards leading to the hallway. There had to be more than just ingredients and when guns got mentioned she shrugged and laughed about their businesses. " YOu got guns and truffles, and I got ecstasy and candy necklaces... what a world we live in."

"I'm not sure... kind of... it's like that and doing things to help the other express themselves? I'm not sure... why I question getting ready... cause I may be creepy. And I reallyyyyyyyyyy don't wanna come off bad..," she said fidgeting, only to grow wide eyed as Balmore sprang from the bed mentioning a gift and how she looked the best posed as she was in that moment. "Huh?"

She laughed and leaned off the mattress trying to follow where he went with her eyes. "IF it's a truffle... I think yer' best selling it!," she called after him.

I get why people headcanon that Trucy would call Edgeworth "Uncle Miles" because it represents how close he is to Nick and Trucy and how he's basically part of the family etc. HOWEVER I cannot help but imagine the shock and horror of passersby who hear Trucy call one man "uncle" and one "daddy" as they watch Nick and Miles interact lovingly in public and come to the conclusion that Nick is openly cheating on his spouse with his spouse's brother.
