Okay so idk if this theory has already been thought of, BUT!

What if the reason why Thorin’s gold sickness came on so hard and fast was because he was AROUND BILBO, who was carrying the RING?

We’ve already seen evidence that the ring can affect others simply by being near them (Boromir, etc), so it would make PERFECT sense for it to be the culprit for Thorin succumbing so quickly to the gold - especially since, thanks to the deleted scene in Rivendell in AUJ, we already know that he is afraid of falling to the sickness.

An Indispensable Silver Lining | The Hobbit Ref Dump

So, I can’t (see: don’t want to) go on with An Indispensable Silver-Lining until I can sit down and rewatch some Desolation of Smaug to pin down some character locations, and I really wanna decide if I’m going full movie-verse or embracing a specific fanedit or book+movie mix and what timeline I want to hold myself to for Thorin—

Can you believe I started this fic thinking ‘I’m not going to get bogged down by canon or details this time. I just wanna write for the fun’? 😂 That went well.

Point is, just because I want to gather some canon facts? It hasn’t stopped me from writing up 1500 words of a chapter 2+ plan, or over 6 THOUSAND WORDS of longterm storyboarding in less than THREE DAYS covering Smaug and the men/dwarves/elves factions and the orcs and some of the bagginshield progression and the ‘act 1’ climax and like three ways ‘act 2’ could break bad, and— well, you can tell it’s a true passion project when I keep stepping away, think of another thing, and scramble back to my phone to jot down a few hundred more words in whatever moments I can steal. And, more pertinent to this post, I can’t stop devouring a ton of resources and inspiration.

So, with that in mind, I thought I’d just share something of those sources! For fun, for later reference for myself as I write, for practical use if you’d like it yourself, or maybe you just want something else to read and these are great fics/lore bits to choose!

Major Inspiration Fics

Backs To The Wall by @conkers-thecosy My current top TH/LotR read, a great active WIP, definitely a direct inspiration to me with the failure to get into Erebor leading things off course! And I'll likely have a parallel Laketown focus for a bit, though nothing as detailed and lived-in as Conkers' fic. And, aside from great writing and general motivation to write TH/Bagginshield, I love the portrayals of the characters (BILBO, Thorin, Gandalf, Dwalin, Nori, Bard and the Bardlings--) and pairings. Definitely tempting me towards Dwalin/Nori here!

And I'm Your Lionheart by Lee_Whimsy There always seems to be a fic in every fandom of mine that draws me in very early, becomes and instant fave, and then hangs there unfinished but perpetually on my mind. The 'one that got away' fic. This is it, and I shall forever love it, and you can just bet it will bleed into my takes somewhere, especially with Gandalf and Legolas and Bard and Fíli, if I recall correctly. I should totally reread this, or at least sections of it. Reading to the 'end' is... painful.

The Most Precious of Treasures by @sapphireshelle91 Another long untouched WIP, but a VERY different one, as it is a) post-TBoFA, and b) features a female Bilbo and parentshield with dwobbit!Frodo. I include this one because a) I love a number of the characterizations, b) if 'And I'm Your Lionheart' gives me the infrastructure and maintenance inspiration for Erebor, THIS fic delivers on the politics and intrigue, and c) I am a HUGE sucker for parentshield, be it biological or adoptive, so naturally I'm contemplating it for my own fic. Still iffy on which way I'll take it, but I've fallen down some intriguing rabbit holes in regards to Shire culture and Bilbo's background while considering the biological option, and I'd be loathe to abandon those ideas now. But either way, this fic deserves a definite nod for motivating me to come up with ideas.

Home Behind and Home Ahead by Etharei Love the characterizations in this one, and in particular, anything that gives me a tap onto Bilbo's character is appreciated. And I don't know if I'll draw much on it for this fic in particular, but I love all forms of parentshield and this is a lovely dynamic between the three characters, so I'd happily draw from it in the abstract.

I cannot, for the LIFE OF ME figure out what they were going for with this scene.

I mean, anybody reasonably familiar with the Hobbit or anything else written by Tolkien would know Orcrist was very much not forged by Legolas’ kin and that he’d have absolutely no reason to claim that (especially not in Elvish which the Dwarves can’t understand - if he was saying that for their benefit and using ‘my kin’ as shorthand for ‘other elves’ it might make some vague amount of sense but he’s just thinking to himself, and there’s no way in hell he privately identifies with the Noldor enough that he’d think of them like that) but that’s not the weirdest thing about this. 

In the ACTUAL Elvish that he is ACTUALLY speaking in this scene, he’s saying:

“This sword was made in Gondolin. Forged by the Noldor.” (source)

Which is actually correct. Why oh why would they go to the trouble of writing a piece of Elvish dialogue saying one thing and saying exactly the opposite thing in the subs? 

If it was about the copyright issues of not being allowed to reference the Silm but they still wanted to have the actual facts as a little easter egg, couldn’t they tweak the subtitles so they’d fit better? Like saying “this is a blade from one of the old Elven kingdoms, forged by the High Elves?” Hell! It can’t be that, the LotR movies had Galariel use the word ‘Noldorin’ to describe the daggers she gives Merry and Pippin, AND the first Hobbit movie had Elrond spelling it out for us by literally saying: “This is Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver. A famous blade... forged by the High Elves of the West, my kin.(...) And this is Glamdring (...) Sword of the King of Gondolin. These were made for the Goblin Wars of the First Age” SO WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ISSUE HERE?! 

If they wanted to have him say exactly what he’s saying in the subs, couldn’t they have him actually say that instead of distracting me with the word ‘Gondolin’? Is it that they recorded the dialogue to echo Elrond’s words in AUJ, and then thought “hmmm, casual viewers won’t get that even though we referenced that in the first movie” and so they subbed it with the exact opposite of what he’s saying?? To also echo what Elrond said except this time it has the unfortunate consequence of implying that Legolas and Elrond are kin which would be bound to confuse casual viewers even more?! 

Which version am I supposed to go with now? Is Legolas merely confused about Dwarves carrying a First Age Noldorin weapon - which is what his real dialogue and initial reaction tell us - or is he offended that Dwarves apparently stole something that belonged to ‘his kin’ - which is what the subtitles establish and what the movie goes with?? Why is the movie operating on two separate and contradicting levels of reality?!

I mean, his reference to Gondolin makes his bitchy attitude even more unwarranted and pointless than it already was, because if Thorin had stopped being a cryptic asshole for all of two seconds he could have just said ‘Lord Elrond gave this to me’ (truthful + Elrond is the kind of guy you absolutely namedrop if you want an Elf to listen to you) instead of ‘it was given to me’ (needlessly vague, antagonizing and dumb) and Legolas would have gone ‘Elrond is pretty significantly connected to Gondolin, what with his grandparents being from there, and a Dwarf probably wouldn’t think to use that info to convince me, so it’s probably not a lie.’ 

Why do I get punished for knowing what they’re talking about?

Bonus round: OKAY. So this is a Fili game that @sunnyrosewritesstuff and I decided to play while watching AUJ when I went to visit her recently. Any shot you THINK you see Fili, "Dean" or "Not Dean". Every single scene... (because Dean O'Gorman came into shooting later, replacing the initial actor, but they did not reshoot everything.)

I had a scene in the original version of chapter 26's smut scene (rewrote that one entirely from my original draft) where Lin called Arst "(my) dear" in Long Dau. Arst asked what he said and Lin got embarrassed and tried to deflect, while Arst tried to pester an answer out of him (without success). It was a cute scene, but it sadly didn't go with the flow of the revised version. Maybe I can try to repurpose it in another scene one day...

Love Letters by BadgertheGnome- This is such an adorable story told alternating between letters and Bilbo’s POV as our favorite two idiots realize that the other is actually in love with them and where to go from there as Bilbo has returned to the Shire. I think the transitions through time are flawless, and while it was not quite the soulmate hit I was looking for, I was definitely pleased with this little slice of life story.

Markings of the One by Beautiful_Baloney- THIS FIC! I will never get over the Goblin King scene with Thorin just softly pleading for Bilbo’s life as long as I live…sorry spoilers. Okay, actually review. I LOVE painter Bilbo in this, and it made such a fun reveal considering soulmates in this share the drawings on skin with their other half. Twenty-eight chapters, and we’re still skating around the issue even knowing they are soulmates, but I’m loving the slow burn. Fun retelling of the quest with Soulmate AU, well worth the read!

Been watching some hobbit behind the scenes and my hot take on the movies is that I think they shouldn’t have given Orlando Bloom a script. Think they should’ve just let him loose on the set and told him to do whatever he wanted and it probably would have been more accurate to Legolas’ character than how they had him acting in the hobbit movies
