'5 Seconds of Summer have proven why support acts shouldn't be overlooked'
Daily Mirror (UK), 5 October 2023
'5 Seconds of Summer may have had a helping hand from One Direction but almost eight years since their last tour with the group, the Aussie lads have proven they're more than enough, writes Daniel Bird...'
Full article / review of The 5SOS Show Manchester below (link):
'Arguably one of the biggest bands right now, it's no surprise that 5 Seconds of Summer are continuing to sell out arenas.
Having seen the four Aussies at the start of their career, playing in venues with a capacity of 300 with tickets being sold for less than £15, to now seeing them at stadiums and sold-out arenas, they've come a long way. Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin first joined forces in 2011, uploading videos to YouTube and amassing a string of fans.
One of those happened to be Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, who invited the quartet to support them on their 2013 Take Me Home Tour. They went on to support the 1D lads for another two years on the Where We Are and On The Road Again tours, performing to millions of fans across the globe.
Tumblr media
But while they were warming the crowd up, the group were also busy with their own music, with early releases including Out Of My Limit and arguably their best track, Heartache on the Big Screen, they soon went on to establish their own name, 5SOS (five sauce). With this new-found fame came their own fans, in their thousands.
Tickets for their headline shows would sell out within minutes as fans packed venues to hear their favourite songs live. But in 12 years, they've proven that support acts shouldn't be overlooked. Many of us go to gigs, often missing the support act or not taking anything away from them but these lads were different.
Was it their humour? Their childish energy at times? Their on-stage banter with one another? That's something we won't know but their recent show at Manchester's AO Arena on the The 5 Seconds of Summer Show was certainly one of their best. Opening the show with Bad Omens, certainly set the mood for the night as Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton delved through their back catalogue and delivered an electric set.
Tumblr media
Part of the show included audience participation, with a giant red dice being launched into the audience by Hemmings, allowing the crowd to choose the next song, with Voodoo Doll being chosen, much to the excitement of the 21,000 roaring fans. This opened a gateway for the lads to discuss their past, with Ashton recalling staying at a hotel over the road from the arena while supporting One Direction.
"About ten people knew who we were at the time, now look," he exclaimed while reflecting on their meteoric rise to success as he recalled performing at smaller venues before the band managed to sell out the biggest indoor arena in Europe. But while reflecting, the group looked towards the future as they stated their plans for the next few months are pretty empty.
Tumblr media
This, however, is for good reason as lead guitarist Michael is set to welcome his first child with his wife, Chrystal Leigh Clifford. Joking about his future, he laughed while saying he will be going from playing in front of thousands of fans to having a "house covered in poop" before Luke interjected, adding he will be able to teach Clifford's daughter how to wear make-up.
Anecdotes aside, the group certainly showcased their performance skills and failed to stand still for the cheering crowd as they made their presence in the arena known. Having seen the lads perform countless times, this was certainly their best performance to date.'

In my Sunday night feels & reflecting on the past two weeks & thinking about how incredibly grateful I am to have experienced 4 5sos shows, to have travelled to two new countries & to have done all of this with some of my closest friends who I met on this website 🥲 this tour was beyond incredible & I genuinely had not felt happiness like I did at these shows in a very long time 🥲
It’s so beyond insane that even two weeks ago I hadn’t met @highscal in person, we’d been texting for like a year maybe? But our first in person experience together was the Manchester show which was very fitting & now we’ve been to Prague together and to think we only just met irl is so wild because it feels like we’ve known each other forever. Nat I’m so grateful for you & our friendship & I love you so much, so happy we got to do this tour together (and all the unhinged show moments 🤪👹)
I just feel so emotional about the whole thing as I would not be the person I am today without this band and these people, I literally owe so much of myself and my life to them & I know 13 year old me seeing 5sos for the first time supporting 1D would be so excited if she knew all of the adventures we’d be going on because of them, and all the friends we’d make along the way 🥹
(also can’t believe we got to hear English Love Affair live twice in 2023 & Out of My Limit in soundcheck, what is going on)
5SOS forever ❤️‍🔥

Michael/Harry (5sos + 1D) Masterlist
a dream for white light (ao3) - merlypops luke/calum, michael/harry G, 1k
Summary: A breeze picked up, stirring the dried autumn leaves where they were littering the tarmac around him. The wind seemed very localised - none of the trees edging the car park were moving and even the man sitting on the other side of the steps appeared unaffected - but Michael's hair was being tousled and the cool air felt like fingertips stroking his cheeks for a moment, reminding him that he wasn't alone. ‘Not now, Ash. Please not now.’
At Calum and Luke's wedding, Ashton helps Michael move on.
and i remember us now (ao3) - thedeathofhyacinth E, 2k
Summary: Michael hasn't seen Harry since the Brits and he feels homeless.
burnt eggs & broken promises (ao3) - kingscrossinseptember G, 4k
Summary: “…So after a month or two of getting hounded by people, I may or may not have invented a fictional boyfriend.”
Luke glanced up at Ashton with worried blue eyes, as if he was expecting to be berated for lying. Instead, Ashton shrugged. “I can see why.”
or,
Ashton’s always found his roommate, Luke, nothing but aggravating, but when they make a deal where Ashton has to pretend to be Luke’s boyfriend for a night, his opinion starts to shift slightly…
couldn't be what you need (he's just seventeen) (ao3) - zayndotcom E, 6k
Summary: "Michael's first encounter with Harry Styles after nearly two years of avoiding him couldn't have gone any worse if he tried. Fuck."
i just miss your accent and your friends (ao3) - bellawritess T, 2k
Summary: Of all the people Michael might have expected to see at the CALM release party, Harry Styles isn’t one.
I Just Miss Your Accent and Your Smile (ao3) - FayeHunter michael/calum, michael/harry E, 4k
Summary: "Harry (9:04am) I’ve been thinking about you a lot. I’m in LA if you want to hang.
Michael sits and stares at the text for a while, unsure if he’s fully comprehending what’s in front of him. It’s not unusual for Harry to text him when he’s in town, but normally he’s a little more subtle than this."
Or Harry's in town and Michael can't wait to see him again
Like Cardiac Arrest (high voltage when we kiss) (ao3) - orphan_account E, 4k
Summary: Michael didn’t want to do anything but accept this kiss from Harry at that moment. He forgot all of the words that were spinning around in his head and everything was quiet except the sound of Harry’s wet lips against his own. And that’s what Harry did, he made Michael forget.
Not That Important (ao3) - sammyswagstar M, 2k
Summary: "Michael tilted his head back further into the pillow, deciding he was doing too much thinking for a teenage boy about to have his brains fucked out." OR Michael and Harry have turned fucking into a regular thing between them and they might as well enjoy it.
some are like the heat (ao3) - clemmingtine M, 2k
Summary: The heat is driving Michael insane. Or maybe it's just Harry. Set during TMH.
somehow you kicked all my walls in (ao3) - estrella30 E, 15k
Summary: Enough time passes between the last Manchester show and the next time he sees Harry that Michael thinks he probably imagined everything that had happened between the two of them.
or, Harry and Michael hook up a lot over the course of the tour
something to prove (nothing to lose) (ao3) - bellawrites T, 1k
Summary: Michael props himself up on his elbows and gives Harry a blank stare. “You want to finish the chess game? Instead of make out?”
Voices Singing (Let's Be Jolly) (ao3) - allsassnoclass (brightblackholes) T, 4k
Summary: Harry loves Christmas and singing in his community choir. Michael hates Christmas but is playing the piano for their holiday concert, anyway.
we'll stumble through it all (ao3) - nemesina77 T, 6k
Summary: “You’re Twitter flirting with Harry Styles.”
“This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen.”
Luke leans in, impossibly closer. “Michael, this is a life-changing moment. One day you’ll look back and remember this and it’ll be the moment that changed the rest of your life, for better or worse.”
Ashton huffs and Michael’s eyes bug out impossibly bigger. “Wow Luke, way to freak him out even more. Just trust your gut Mikey, it’s worked so far.”
Will You Marry Me? (ao3) - kallie_larry_forever G, 1k
Summary: Michael is proposing to his boyfriend and Harry is so oblivious to what is going on

5 SECONDS OF SUMMER: THE 5SOS SHOW
04.10.2023 @ AO Arena, Manchester (21,000 Capacity) ⚠️ TW: some flashing lights in video ⚠️
I've wanted to see 5SOS for a while now. As with many artists, I started listening to them properly in the pandemic, having heard several of their songs beforehand. I went back and listened to their whole discography which made me able to see their progression in its entirety, especially their subtle changes to shift genres slightly with each album but still stay true to their roots. The first release I was a fan of the band for was that of their newest album '5SOS5' which saw them venture into the pop-alternative genre but listening back, it's clear that they still pull on their rock influences within certain tracks.
I bought these tickets back in April, when tickets first went on sale & looked forward to it for a long time. It was my first Arena gig since 2018 & we were up in the lower bowl as close to the stage as you could be from the side, meaning we could see both the stage & the steps the band came onto the stage from. We got there just in time to see the openers. Charlotte Sands (who @artbyamixx is a big fan of) was up first & performed amazingly - I was blown away. The crowd really got into it (as they should've) & we were able to hear an unreleased track as well as her newest songs. The second opener was a pop duo called ar/co who were unexpected but delightful anyway with their psychedelic, electronic pop sounds.
When 5SOS came on, they played songs from every single one of their albums as well as some other singles, which was super fun considering I'd never seen them live before this. Similarly to the whole concept of surprise songs at concerts (introduced by Taylor Swift at the Eras tour), the boys have a dice song. Their huge inflatable dice is thrown into the crowd & they then have 90 seconds to throw it around & get it back on stage. Each side has a song from the band's debut era, songs they don't play anymore, so everyone on there is wanted. I think the crowd wanted 'English love affair', a song wanted by the UK crowds in general but in the end, it landed on 'Voodoo Doll', one of my favourite of the deluxe tracks off the debut album.
Another segment of the show was 'Ashton VS You' where the crowd battled the band's drummer (Ashton Irwin) to see who could be louder - although I think it's kind of cheating cause the sound guys at the back could've just turned up the speakers for all we know. I loved how this incorporated a song off of 'Youngblood' because the drums in it are just *chefs kiss* amazing so hearing them isolated was incredible. Additionally, the band tied the show together with pre-recorded skits that played on the side stage screens which kept the crowd excited & also gave the band a moment's reprieve throughout the show, which was no doubt tiring given how energetic everyone was. A random thing I noticed from our angle of the stage is how both Luke & Michael switched out their guitars for several others throughout the show. I assume Luke was switching between a rhythm & normal electric guitar but Michael switched to an acoustic for 'Amnesia'.
The last time 5SOS played this venue was back in 2015, when they opened for One Direction on the ‘On the road again’ tour. Since this is their last tour for a little while, the night genuinely might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience (although I hope it’s not!) I think everyone there can agree, it was an unbelievable night and I’ll be looking over my videos forever.

5sos announce that Pale Waves and Little Luna will be supporting them for the USA leg of the Take My Hand Tour!
Tumblr media
“Pale Waves are an English indie rock band from Manchester, formed in 2014. It was founded originally as Creek when lead singer and guitarist Heather Baron-Gracie met drummer Ciara Doran while attending university in Manchester. The band was joined by guitarist Hugo Silvani and bassist Charlie Wood, completing the lineup.” Via the bands Wikipedia
Two members of Pale Waves are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The band's second album, Who Am I?, was announced on 10 November 2020 along with its lead single "Change", which was named as Annie Mac's Hottest Record in the World. With both Baron-Gracie (gay) and Doran (non-binary) being members of the LQBTQ+ community, they both aimed for the album to reflect that, with Baron-Gracie stating in an interview with DIY that she wanted to be "a voice for LGBTQ+ people". The album was partially recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Costey though COVID-19 restrictions forced the band to return to the U.K. and finish the remainder of the album remotely. Of making an album during the pandemic, Baron-Gracie confessed that "for me, music and art is for people not to feel so alone and isolated. I want to be that person my fans look up to and find comfort in." Who Am I? was released on 12 February 2021 and reached number 3 on UK Albums Chart. -Via the bands Wikipedia
“Baron-Gracie is an open member of the LGBTQ+ community, and in an interview with Vanity Fair, she exclaimed: "Too many people think I’m straight ... I’m not straight ... I’ve always been gay. When I came out of the womb I knew I was gay." Baron-Gracie is in a relationship with singer and songwriter Kelsi Luck, who served as Baron-Gracie's "muse" when she was writing the lyrics and themes for the Pale Waves album Who Am I? With Baron-Gracie, Luck co-directed the video for Pale Waves' single "You Don't Own Me", and the two starred together in the video for the song "She's My Religion".
This is a great article they did for the Gay Times. Definitely go read it! https://www.gaytimes.co.uk/amplify/pale-waves-are-ready-to-show-the-world-who-they-truly-are/
Excerpt::
Pausing for a second, the singer continues, musing over how she came to the decided stage of being vocal about her identity. “It’s really interesting, because I have posted pictures with my girlfriend, but a year or two years ago, I wasn’t publicly talking about my sexuality at all,” she thinks back. That said, although Heather didn’t feel ready to publicly take on such a visible role in the queer community, some fans had managed to pin down her identity before she did, something she finds quite amusing. “I feel like hardcore fans know everything. They found a tweet of mine, but I’ve not publicly opened up about it,” she shrugs. “We have such a gay fan base and they look up to me, they idolise me in some ways, they find comfort knowing that I’m gay and they’re gay, so it’s all going to be okay. Our fans want somebody to look up and I want to be their comfort blanket. I want to give as much comfort as I possibly can to fans who need to be told it’s okay, and that you shouldn’t be ashamed of your sexuality.”

7, 17, 21, and 53 for the concert asks 💕💕 (hoodhoran)
7. Which artists/bands would you love to see live?
Honestly at this rate, literally anyone lmao😭 but specifically ones that I haven't seen so far that I would love to see are Taylor Swift (her shows look INCREDIBLE), Yungblud (who I'm hopefully seeing in October!) and The Band CAMINO!
17. Funniest concert memory?
I think it has to be when 5SOS did the catwalk thing at MYT Tour Manchester night two 😭 Michael basically crawling halfway across the stage before falling and the crowd not letting any of them get away with not doing it was just so iconic lmao MAN I miss them so much
21. Which concert that you've been to has had the best setup/production?
Oooo for some reason when I saw Twenty One Pilots on their blurryface tour, that one is standing out to me for best production! (I just googled this and found out it was in 2015???? I swear time is not real)
53. Have you ever seen an artist/band play an album in full?
Oooo no I don't think I have! I wish this was a more common thing though!

#ThinkPositive2018: Apr 9
Slept until my alarm went off
Brought breakfast and lunch from home
Made dinner at home
Found out we were awarded another grant we’d been waiting to hear back on so that’s a good Monday in my book
Ordered two new shirts from H&M - Gotta love blow out sales
Have 1 of my 3 Harry outfits planned for this summer :)
Had another lovely conversation with @paper-storm about music and various other life related things. :)
Harry’s Manchester Show
First of all I’m emotional cause he’s playing in to a sold out audience at the very same venue he grew up going to concerts to
Second of all I’m emotional because of what that show means to him, not just because he’s home, but because of what happened and how much that city and community have helped each other heal
Third... his pink Alexander McQueen suit is fucking ACE and has now taken the top spot as favorite suit of the tour
Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart was so so special and I got very emotional watching the video
He totally went off during Kiwi - as per usual
“It’s not complicated” - I need that as a ringtone immediately
5sos FINALLY ANNOUNCED AN ALBUM DROP DATE AND THEN DROPPED NEW TOUR DATES ON US
Youngblood drops June 22nd!!
