Something I really appreciate about the Owl House is the way designs are used. Like how the inhuman creature with a skull on his head and dark fur is a protagonist whose dad provides one of the main positive driving forces in the show, and is generally cast in a good light, while the star child with an aesthetically pleasing space theme and human shape is a misguided antagonist who comes from a family that seems generally destructive.

The Collector's Hat Sewing Pattern and Tutorial
Image of the pattern I made with measurements:
Tumblr media
As a little heads up to people with big/small heads and/or more voluminous hair, this was based on measuring my own head which has a circumference of 22 inches which is dead on the average and my hair is completely straight and relatively flat. You may need to do some adjustments of these measurements because the final fit is very fitted, in that it can be easily put on and taken off but does not fall off on it's own under typical circumstances.*
This pattern is meant for knit or other stretch fabrics, I did not make a completed version with woven or stiffer fabrics, so quality may vary depending on the material you select. I recommend knits.
Tumblr media
If you are new to sewing or this is one of your first projects you are doing without a physical pattern, I recommend following the given measurements and drawing it out on some type of paper first and then using that as reference for yourself. I am an outlier when it comes to not making patterns and drawing the shape of what I want out onto the fabric directly, and you shouldn't follow my horrible example. This hat is actually the first time I've even made a muslin prototype.
When you are going to cut out the pieces you need to make sure, like double and triple check, that if you were to lay them pattern/top side up, that they would mirror each other like in the above picture. If you don't then you'll have two lefts or two rights.
Tumblr media
The first actual step for sewing is taking the straight lines from the V shaped notch in the top of the hat, and lining them up by folding the piece in half so the patterned/top of the fabric is on the inside of the fold, like in the picture above. You do this on one half at a time. When they are lined up sew them with a straight line stitch a 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) in from the cut, starting at the fold towards the top of the hat.
Tumblr media
After that you want to lay them pattern to pattern, and pin them into place to make sure it's aligned properly on both sides. To reduce bulk I recommend making the excess fabric from the darts (the V cut-out) point in opposite directions, as shown in the above picture.
Tumblr media
After you've sewn the sides together there is an optional step that I did to make sure the seam lies flat on the top of your head. I opted to sew both sides down onto the blue half of my hat because my machine was being picky and skipping stitches on they grey fabric if there was no blue fabric as well (I got around this on the hem by inserting thin pieces from the blue's selvage into the seam). But if your machine isn't being picky or you are hand sewing this, then you could split the excess and sew them down onto their corresponding half. Example above, as usual.
Tumblr media
Optional step that MUST go here. If you are attaching a ribbon, or lace for a trim to edge you have to do it now. I do not recommend this step to beginners. I recommend sewing it down while rolling the edge to create the hem, and then securing the other side of the ribbon/lace further into the piece because this guarantees a better placement and straighter lines. If you are doing this step along solely the bottom or front edges then let the lace/ribbon stick out further than the edge of the fabric, so you can fold it under the hem.
The final required step is to hem it, just fold what remains of the raw edge and sew it down.
Tumblr media
Final optional step is for adding little trinkets. I added trinkets to the front corners and the floppy bit in the back like the Archivists are depicted as having. I used embroidery thread and slid the needle to go between the seams and tied it off on the inside. If your trinkets are not detachable, like the little stars on my hat, you need to thread the needle through the ring before putting it back into the hat and tying off the thread. Thinner cord or thin ribbon could work as well.
*I actually just did some tests and I have to be tilted further back than lying flat on my back for it to fall off. I was able to bend over and look through my knees and it didn't fall off. I tested it's wind resistance against my two strongest fans and neither could knock it off my head even when I shook it. So I think it will stay in place just shy of someone pointing a leaf blower at you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enjoy these pictures of the finished product, including a glamor shot of me wearing it backwards while I fumble with my phone for a picture.

Thinking about this scene, actually
Tumblr media
If we’re running with the assumption that the Colelctor is referring to his own tears, this has… interesting implications about their character.
For starters, this isn’t really the first time we see the Collector crying. There’s this scene, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, even though they’re clearly distraught, there aren’t actually any tears. Which is kind of weird, right? A chance at having a real friend is clearly a big deal to them, but still, their eyes are dry.
When do they finally do it, then? During the fight with Belos, when he possesses the Titan and kills Luz. With Titan magic on his hands, the Collector cries tears for the first time.
But that isn’t the last time. The Collector tears up again, after the fight has ended, when Amity reaches out to him.
Tumblr media
And this? This really makes me wonder, because he only actually starts crying after exposure to Titan magic.
We’ve seen that Titan magic is capable of cancelling out the Collector’s. From the Archivists’ genocide, to the Collector’s failing powers, and even the usage of the Light glyph. Titan magic counters Collector magic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’ve also seen that the Archivists, uh. didn’t really like the Collector. At all. Judging by the Collector’s words, they seemed pretty irritated with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, when you’re a powerful magic being with an annoying child on your hands (and a blatant lack of morals), wouldn’t you want to shut them up?
When he’s crying, wouldn’t you make him stop?

Some wips of a Starchild/Collector life cycle chart I did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some details:
1: ???
- I haven't given a name to this stage, but tbh I kinda wanna call this one "Stardust Bunnies" as a cute or affectionate term. This is one that is rarely seen, as they usually only exist at the hearts of stars. They can survive without a star but for much, much shorter time than any other stage could because they don't have a true core even formed yet.
2.1: Adult
-Most common, sometimes referred to as a starborn or starforged. They live inside the hearts of their stars until they're fully developed adults and usually have all the necessary knowledge to survive on their own.
-Adults make up the majority of Collectors and usually run collection missions.
2.2: Child
- Born without a star from converging energy, magic and matter produced by different celestial events or bodies that aren't stars. Considered uncommon though whether it's because they die young before imprinting on a star or are simply just more rare hasn't been confirmed yet.
-Their growth rate is entirely determined by how they mature emotionally or mentally.
-Stage of childhood is determined entirely by the amount of energy and magic that created them. The less there was, the younger they appear. Eventually they become full-fledged adults of their species.
-Usually not involved in collecting, but this varies based on each cluster.
3: Elder
- Adults become Elders through natural aging alongside their stars, but they can also reach this stage sooner by absorbing energy or magic from other stars or Starchildren.
-The Elders are the ones in charge of guiding the younger Starchildren and keeping peace within their cluster's territory. They also tend to manage the cluster's Family Archive.
-Act as a sort of backup if the adults cannot handle a situation. If things look dicey for the adults, the elders will step in as their power tends to be much, much greater.
4.1: Ancients
-Occur from a metamorphosis triggered by the death of their star. If the star creates a new one, they'll usually bond with it, but some find different stars entirely. If they bond with a star far from their cluster, they will simply move the new one to their original star's place to stay in the cluster.
-These are Collectors who basically cheat death. They are a sort of demigod presence among their society.
-Can experience a second metamorphosis if the star dies and creates a black hole.
-The primary caregivers to new and young Starchildren in their cluster. They also function as the guardians of their territories and fend off hostile forces, namely rogue Outsiders.
4.2: Outsiders or World Eaters
-Like Ancients, they come from a metamorphosis triggered by the death of their star. If a star collapses into a black hole, a Collector becomes this.
-They have a near insatiable appetite and will eat anything in their paths, including their own family members or their stars.
-Some keep sane by consuming enough energy to stifle the hunger but it is a constant fight. Other Collectors may share power to prevent their sibling from being lost.
-Ancients are the best defense against a World Eater, but a large enough or clever enough group of Elders can handle them if needed.
5: Fading/Deconstruction
-The true death of a Starchild. When their star dies, the residual energy transfers to their core. But when that energy begins to dwindle, they become cold. Their bodies freeze and slowly break apart into ice and dust. It is a long, long process.

Ps. There were too many adult titans around and risk of being caught red-handed was way above average. Loosing diversion and a kid in any circumstance would be absolute disaster. That's why no playing for Collie or the armour (it's quite sharp and would cut deeply hands of any who tried to grap sb in it)

Believe it or not, publicly saying that I’m not interested in TOH anymore has made me question if I was into it (does this happen to anyone else?). Spoiler alert: it comes and goes, but I still am!
Anyways, GUYS. I was on the villains wiki and I
Tumblr media
I have never thought about this. Could this have been a parent to them? Or was it just one of them who declared the war?
What makes me lean towards it just being one of them is, Collector never once mentioned any parent, and there was no murals of any parental figure.
That being said, I think it was this guy.
Tumblr media
And the reason I think it was this guy was because the red star I assume is a sun. Idk why, it just makes more sense to me.
Also, Bill has an entire shrine with sun themed things in it. Bill is down bad for this entity. Prove me wrong.

I just had an idea about the Archivists/Collector species.
What if the little baby ones are called Novas cause they are new and maybe they get born out of super novas?
I just thought that was cute.
Also, since all the new collectors/archivists are called Nova until they grow up a bit and find a name for themself, older archivists refer to them as the Nova of whichever archivist is takes care of them the most, so like our collector would be so and so's Nova.
The archivist who took care of a Nova is usually the only who calls them Nova once they pick their name, it's generally a term of affection.

Oh my god I had a shower moment earlier and I have a new theory about the archivists in owl house.
So I've seen a lot of people talking about the Collector we see in Knock Knock Knockin' On Hooty's Door in the owl beast's backstory as if that was the same Collector we got to see in full at the end of the series, but I always thought that had to be a different one because that was definitely not the equivalent of a five year old.
But I was also thinking of ways that could have been hinted to us.
And then I remembered their methods of archiving are different.
Our Collector makes puppets, they become toys because to them that's all the people of the isles are. They're toys and archiving them is him putting them away. But the first collector we see? They made the owl beast into a scroll. Their magic was a little different; the owl beast burned and dissolved into a scroll that was untouched by the boiling waters and only vanished when it was used to infuse the owl beast's soul with Eda's. Making an indestructible soul scroll is very different than making puppets. So what if all the archivists have different means of cataloguing their findings? Different means of archiving?
(I sent this as a text to my sister first, sorry for any spelling or whatever other errors, she encouraged me to post it.)

Maybe Col just goes off a lonesome traveler round the isles instead being free and doing his own thing but not being completely alone in the world. They get mostly depowered so they can't just snap their fingers and return everything to normal (but is still immortal and invulnerable). They help fix things, they learn more about mortality, and how life works for demonkind. By the time the timeskip happens, Col's gone round the entire isles and still has no intention of going to a permanent home yet. And yeah, he might eventually check on his old home with the other collectors but he's not leaving just yet, there's still a lot to see and explore down here, after all. Compromise? (There is still the issue of how he finds money, a tent and a sleeping bag though)
Hey, what do you think of this?
I really like that idea. We do see him all sheepish, turning everyone back from being dolls one by one. I get the feeling that (most) people were willing to play nice with The Collector, but I doubt forgiveness was universal or completely genuine. That would have taken more time and understanding. The ending of the series, with Luz's voiceover, suggests that The Collector took off not long after everyone was reunited, and we know that the gang spent literal years cleaning up The Isles. Still, maybe The Collector dropped by every now and then with a unique tool or new friend who could help speed up the process? As for how he finds traveling supplies, that's easy. He's still seemingly omnipotent with Titan magic being his only kryptonite. The Collector can just zap himself a cool tent and sleeping bag, and with everything he can do, what does he even need with money?
But I do not want him going back to his people. I really, really hope that never happens. Because we don't know what they are, or how they work. All we know is what they've done, their track record, and it's bad. I'm terribly worried for The Collector and the Boiling Isles if he reconnects with the Archivists. What they could do to him, because it's unlikely he'd be able to make a whole society change their ways, and then their attention would be turned to the BI. No, no no, that's the last thing we want. I don't know where The Archivists are or what they're doing but in this case I would really stand by the mantra of letting sleeping dogs lie.

Turned my most recent picture of the Archivists and the Collector into a bunch of phone screen savers. They're a bit plain but I made them primarily because I wanted to switch out my lock and home screens. I made these with the dimensions for them to fit both android and ios.

Just look at my son (gender neutral) guarding my phone and happily displaying the time.

Fun facts! Tears contain stress hormones, helping to flush them out of your body! Crying can help you soothe yourself via activating the PNS (parasympathetic nervous system) which helps you calm down. It also dulls pain, improves your mood, helps you through grief, and restores emotional balance!
Meaning that if the Archivists really did cast a spell on Collector to prevent them from crying that probably did terrible things to the poor kid's, well, I gave you a list for why crying is good for you so they clearly hurt Collector a lot via potentially doing that.
!!! Oh that’s awful actually, especially in the context of the imprisonment. They already had, like, no methods of regulating their mood. Can’t really have hobbies in a tiny little orb after all, and it’s not like they can talk it out with a friend. Being alone for that long, with no outlet, and not even able to cry out the stress? Horrible. I love it.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention Anon, I’m going to reblog the post with this attached to spread the pain ,’)
