Happy Fossil Friday! This boomerang-headed critter is Diplocaulus magnicornis. It lived some 275 million years ago during the Early Permian in what is now Baylor County, Texas. Like other nectrideans (an extinct order of tetrapods), this species had two projections at the back of its skull, creating its signature boomerang shape. Scientists aren’t sure what its exact function was, but it was presumably related to the way the animal swam. Diplocaulus probably lived in ponds and streams.

Turn Week 2023:
History Nerdery!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello, and Happy Fourth of July! For today's Turn Week, I wanted to talk about Benjamin's regiment in the Continental Army. We all know he's a Connecticut Dragoon, but what does that mean and what did they do, exactly? I'm going to let you know! The Continental Cavalry is my favorite unit in the army, and I actually did an Honors Research Project on them last year for my college. WARNING: this is going to be LONG. I'm sorry. Kind of.
What is the Continental Cavalry?
The cavalry is the mounted troops in a military force, meaning they fight on horseback. At the time of the Revolution, the cavalry was considered an elite and necessary force for a proper military. Combat on horseback was dangerous- you not only had to avoid cannon and gunfire, but you had to attack other mounted troops with lances and sabers of their own.
There are two types of cavalry: light cavalry and heavy cavalry. The light cavalry had three primary duties. Scouting, which was to patrol enemy forces, movements, and the terrain surrounding camps and battlefields, which also played into reconnaissance. They also served as messengers to officers on and off the battlefield. On the other hand, heavy cavalry was troops used in action. Their objective was to lead charges and weaken the enemy’s unmounted troops, like going after their flanks. They also performed raids/ambushes or small skirmishes against the enemy. Their combat was on and off the battlefield.
Due to the near constant lack of funds for the Continentals, their Dragoons performed both light and heavy cavalry roles. A dragoon/trooper is a soldier who fights either on horseback or on foot, depending on the amount of horse available. They used weapons such as: a cavalry saber, a shortgun, and a musket.
Unlike the British army, which brought over cavalry forces, at the beginning of the war, there was not an official cavalry for the Continentals. Some state and organized militias had mounted troops- such as the Philadelphia Light Horse- but professional, commissioned troops had not seen action.
After seeing the performance of the British cavalry during the New York Campaign, General George Washington realized his army needed horses of their own. Writing to Congress in late 1776, “From the Experience I have had in this Campaign… I am Convinced there is no carrying on the War without them.”
What made up the Continental Cavalry?
In 1777, the cavalry's first year in action, there were four regiments of Light Dragoons.
The 1st Regiment of Dragoons- from Virginia, also known as Bland's Light Horse. Their uniforms were originally the "classic" Continental coat: blue with red facings, but they then changed the standard to brown with green facings.
The 2nd Regiment, also known as the Connecticut Light Dragoons, Colonel Elisha Sheldon and Benjamin Tallmadge's force, mustered from Connecticut, hence the name. Their uniform was blue with buff facings.
The 3rd Regiment, aka Colonel Baylor's or Lady Washington's Light Horse, in honor of Martha Washington. Their uniform was white with blue facings (one of my favorite uniforms in the army.)
And the 4th Regiment, led by Colonel Stephen Moylan. His troops originally wore red! coats, and this lead to some incidents of friendly fire. At Washington's order, the regiment changed to green with red facings.
How does this relate to Turn: Benjamin Tallmadge and His Dragoons.
Although the show does not get into heavy detail about Benjamin Tallmadge's battle experience, we know what battles he was present at with his regiment.
1777 the cavalry's first years as professional troops in battle. Both had very... different outcomes, let's say. Both were also mentioned or briefly shown in season 2 of Turn, and my research focused on this.
During the Campaigns, a set of troops from each regiment of Dragoons was stationed with General Washington in Pennsylvania, led by Bland, Moylan, Baylor, Sheldon, and Tallmadge.
Benjamin Tallmadge and his soldiers were present at both the Battles of Brandywine and Germantown.
At Brandywine, Washington first used the dragoons for only scouting, not combat. But as the British went after his insecure right flank, he frantically sent units of soldiers and cavalry to prevent the British from getting to the road along and to Brandywine Creek. The cavalry also acted as messengers to officers during this battle, but insufficient preparation and speed led to delayed reports. The cavalry did lead a charge that allowed Washington to retreat, but the day was lost. Afterwards, the British marched into the Continental capital of Philadelphia.
After Brandywine, Washington needed another battle to try and take back Philadelphia. With a night march, he decided to attack the British near their camp in Germantown, Pennsylvania, a small village outside the city.
Washington had four columns, 2 made up of Continental forces and two of state militias. Just as at Brandywine, his right wing was commanded by Sullivan, and his left by Greene. The Dragoons were now under their newly commissioned commander, General Pulaski. Tallmadge stated in his memoirs that, “if every division of the army had performed its allotted part, it seems as if we must have succeeded.”
Unfortunately, this would not be the outcome at Germantown. At the beginning of the battle, the Continentals were winning. Part of the camp was captured. A heavy fog and rain set over the battlefield, and the British used this fog to their advantage. They retreated into a local country house and created a stalemate.
Benjamin Tallmadge and his dragoons were first stationed with Sullivan’s division, close upon “the scene of the action.” As the battle turned against the Continental forces and the troops became victim to enemy and friendly fire, Washington ordered him to use his 2nd Dragoons to block any further retreat, to no avail. Germantown was lost.
Germantown was the last official engagement of the Philadelphia campaign. But on June 28, 1778, the Continental Army and the Cavalry engaged the forces at the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey. Due to proper military training thanks to the Inspector General Baron von Steuben and six months of waiting at Valley Forge, the army emerged as a proper fighting force and prevailed against the British. The victory allowed the Continentals to take back their capital and keep Washington in as Commander in Chief.
Monmouth is the shown in the finale of season 2- Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot- with Benjamin leading his dragoons into the battle.
After the 1777 campaigns, Tallmadge and his dragoons would stay up north, particularly New York, to patrol and engage the enemy in raids. They also participated in the Battles of Stony Point and Fort St. George, which were shown in seasons 3 and 4 of Turn.

Project Folder Cleanout: Part 1
Something I apparently started way back in 2018 and never shared.
Nantucket Bunk Bed in Cluedo and Pirate Woods
7 Cluedo Woods, 11 Pirate Woods (6 Regular + 5 Colorful)
I also made two edited versions of the mesh that use the White Wood texture from each palette, since the original texture is just floodfill. Make sure to choose only one version, as they are edits of the original file and will conflict. I did not change the file name, so feel free to just let it overwrite if you’re already using this bed in your game. If you do choose one of the edited versions, you don’t need the white recolor of whichever palette you chose. Original mesh and lower bunk mesh are also included. All files are compressorized, textures are 512x512.

Credits:
Hope Baylor for the original mesh, Michelle for fixes, and HugeLunatic for further fixes
@shastakiss for Cluedo and Pirate Woods, and for being awesome in general

fuck doctors istg
my immunologist today said he can’t do the prior auth (no reason why just a “polite” fuck you very much) despite the fact we explicitly said i do NOT HAVE ANOTHER FUCKING DOCTOR I CAN GO TO and have not been properly treated in a year and a half
We’re exploring a couple other avenues and MAY be able to get me into a specialty clinic at Baylor in the med center… it’s not for my disease but they basically have a doc who works as your “guide” and coordinates with the other specialists etc, which I have needed for years…. But no idea if they’ll take me or how long it may take to get in there if they will.
But once I do get a doctor to manage me I am reporting both my immunologist and rheumatologist to the state medical board.
I almost died multiple times this year already because of lack of proper care and they have essentially cut me off without making sure I have someone who can continue my care. This is a major failure and if we didn’t live in Texas (that caps medical malpractice so it makes suing not really worth it, especially since as a patient you often will end up blacklisted… it sucks, not the first time we looked into suing a doctor/insurance company) we would sue them.
I probably also will blog about them, by name, and go on every review site I can and tell about their unprofessionalism.
Makes me wish I had an Othello like in Synch… he may be cold and see Seb a bit as a science project, but he does care about him as a patient.

It's been a few days since the "announcement" of the GIGA Pro Gymnastics thing and I'd like to share some research and my lengthy list of questions about this project.
Let's start by saying that there is a document floating around that is marked confidential and proprietary. It's not long, it's an info graphic and appears to be aimed at investors or recruitment. I'm not sharing it. It does inform my questions.
Who Are These People?
First of all: The officers listed are Aimee Boorman as Co-founder and Chief Events Officer. Maura Fox as Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer. LaPrise Williams as Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer. This is what I can find based on publicly available information:
The gymnastics community knows who Aimee Boorman is so I'm not going to detail her. She became a FIG Brevet judge in the last two years but is very junior. She's a category 4 judge meaning that except at the smallest FIG meets she is limited to things like being a line judge or a timing judge, this is not a slight. Everyone has to start as a cat 4 but that does mean she doesn't have a lot of experience as a judge.
Maura Fox has a linkedin which informs what I know about her. She was an executive for Time Warner leaving in 2009. Her last job there was as group vice president for consumer devices, cross platform, and strategy. She then ran her own consulting form for 10 years which her linkedin says ended in 2019. She's honestly the person I want to know the most about to take this project seriously or not. She says she's been involved in launching professional circuits in cycling and men's tennis. I'd like to find out what those ventures were to be able to assess the likelihood that this venture will survive. She then worked for some kind of media products group that I can't really get my head around for two years before going to work for GIGA. Her linked in identifies GIGA as having been founded in 2021. So they've had 2 years to build this... which frankly matches with the fact that I had heard about them recruiting potential athletes last year.
LaPrise Williams is a pediatric nurse who was the Baylor Acro and Tumbling coach for from 2011-2014. She later told the press she intended to file a Title IX complaint against the university but I have no idea how that worked out. She opened a gym in St Vincent and the Grenadines which identifies itself as the first gym in the islands. She is the Technical Director for the St Vincent and the Grenadines Gymnastics Association. Here is their facebook page. Now I'm going to put some context on the SVGGA here and I don't want anyone to think I'm disparaging them or her. There are many small federations in the world and this is one of them. It is very clearly a legitimate National Governing Body (NGB). At the moment they have no FIG licensed gymnasts in any discipline and Williams is the only FIG brevet judge from the federation in any discipline--she is a category 4 judge for WAG. The facebook activity for the fed runs:
post on June 4th of 2023 which is a repost from Williams' gym's instagram page.
on September 25, 2022 they changed their profile and header pictures
on January 25, 2020 they posted pictures of a team going to Manhatten Classic.
on June 16, 2019 a repost from an article from the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday about the Caribbean Gymnastics Championships which is very likely not a FIG sanctioned event.
All of this is to say this is a small, relatively inactive federation with limited resources and staff and I'm not entirely sure if much weight should begiven to her involvement in it for this project.
Who are the Sponsors/Who is going to pay the Athletes?
This is upfront going to be a lot of "I have no idea." Their launch material doesn't say. The document I've seen doesn't say and the fact that the thing has supposedly existed for two years without a sponsor lined up to be named at public launch is a little worrying to me.
The document describes a two tiered structure for the athletes with start fees and prize money for all (the initial start fee is $1500 to be paid to all gymnasts with GIGA paying for things like travel, hotel, meals, etc). The prize purse for the first year event is described in the low 6 figure range with mention of an All Around winner. I've seen no mention of teams so it appears to me that they're planning on this being an individual competition circuit (more thoughts on that later). I have seen no reference to insurance of any sort and the only medical related thing in the document is onsite massage, PT, and recovery aids. My major concern continues to be that these people are recruiting adult aged post-college athletes and all I can think is there will be many knees destroyed. And this is the United States... so look forward to some Go Fund Me for medical treatment in the future... It's notable that the European club leagues are all in countries with nationalized health care. Their document talks about career longevity for gymnasts but I'm not at all convinced they're promising an infrastructure for that.
There is a second section of this document that talks about headliners and the things they can negotiated for as individuals. So some gymnasts will be paid appearance fees--which I should stress I think is perfectly normal.
Why is it hard to figure out if these people want to be a professional league or a media platform?
Because they want to be both. They want hold to meets and stream content to fans as well as sell access to the athletes for fans experiences. It looks like kind of standard VIP meet and greet kind of things from what little detail I've seen... you pay money to meet the athlete for say 30 minutes with a group of other fans. I've done this kind of thing for television actors. It's fun. But it's also by it's nature not something a lot of fans can afford.
They also want to build a library of content that is essentially athlete interviews presumably the access of which they can sell in whatever the subscription package of their multimedia platform is. It's all pretty vague so we'll have to figure out what it means when their products actually launch.
For now my main concern is why did they announce this in June without a date or location or a format for their first competition?
Lingering Questions...
I have so many... aside from the ones I've touched on above. They talk about how this hasn't been done before. It has. The most successful attempt at launching a pro-gymnastics competition circuit was in 1997-98 in the post Atlanta Olympics hype. They used a modified NCAA code and the meets were aired on CBS. I don't need them to talk about the previous two attempts (except maybe don't claim to be the first) but I really hope they are aware of them at the very least to find out why they didn't last. I fear that they either didn't do that research or they assume because it was 20+ years ago that their multimedia platform makes them so different that it doesn't apply.
What the heck is the meet structure here? They talk a LOT about the successes of NCAA gymnastics but at least the materials I've seen seem to suggest that they don't plan on having teams. Teams are a key part of building fan support in both NCAA and the European club leagues. I still don't think you can model a US league based on those European leagues mostly because they are build on a lot of routines from junior gymnasts and this project seems to be entirely about post-NCAA age careers. That's in addition to my medical insurance and liability insurance questions.
What is USAG's involvement in this? My fear is "they don't want USAG's involvement". See the launching of new professional sports leagues in a country often depend on how much support and buy-in they have from the NGB. One of the major differences between the currently running National Women's Soccer League and earlier defunct attempts is buy-in from USA Soccer. And I promise you that US Soccer is no more popular then USAG. I'm also informed by the fact that playing conditions for a lot of NWSL teams have been pretty bad (let's not touch the sexual harassment issues within teams). One team was playing on a home field that had holes in it and couldn't afford to pay for their players shoes. Gymnastics equipment is extremely expensive. Millions of dollars just for the competition apparatus. Are these people buying it? From who? Are they going to transport it around the country? Are they going to host it in a central location so they can store the equipment locally or rent it from a specific source? So many questions.
What code of points are they using? US developmental program--you know the one whose code of points you have to buy and isn't publicly accessible without paying for it? Some modified version of the above (like NCAA)? If they're riding the coat tales of NCAA I somehow doubt they're using the FIG code which will make it somewhat harder for non-US/Canadian athletes to be involved. What difficulty expectations will there be? How are they going to handle judges? How are they going to assure fans and athletes that judging will be fair given how much money they are saying is in the prize purses and that they're setting up a two tiered "everyone" and "headliners" compensation structure?
Conclusions:
I'm highly skeptical of all of this. I'm worried about what seems to have been a premature information free public launch. Their website and materials seem amateurish to me and I just can't get my head around the idea that they launch this publicly with no sponsors named.
I'm not at all convinced that these people know how or why European club leagues work, why previous attempts at this in the US have failed, what a lot of the appeal of NCAA gymnastics is, or that they have the experience necessary to do any of this.

Fic Rec: Eastern Promises/Elizabethtown
Title: Underground Author: surreysmum Pairing: Nikolai Luzhin (Eastern Promises) / Drew Baylor (Elizabethtown) Rating: NC-17 A/N: My sincere thanks to my wonderful friend Nancy for the beta, special gratitude to Tati for helping with Russian diminutives, and hugs to Tularia for the awesome gift of the banner! This story is dedicated to Nancy on the occasion of her birthday.
Already intrigued by the pairing? Then go and read! I think, deep down, Eastern Promises is my favourite Viggo movie. If I really, really had to decide on one. Which I don't want to do ... I just want to cuddle Nikolai very badly every time I watch that movie. And I always need some fanfic after I've watched it. If you're the same, then you'll like this story. It's a bit angsty, but I promise you a happy ending!

HONORABLE MENTION
Beyoncé - RENAISSANCE
I know it’s coming... *hands on hips* “Honorable mention?!?”
I just can't listen to Renaissance straight through. I’ve tried and tried and tried. When it comes to my listening experience, I approach music sonically first, following the story and arrangement of the music instruments, and how the timbre of one's singing or rapping meets and interweaves between those elements. Give me an audio painting with a tapestry of enthralling colors and textures that I can feel. Then I'll invite in the lyrics.
It's like cinema. The average person most likely follows the eyes of the camera as it relates to the dialogue for the cinematic story. The way my brain is wired 🤖 I have to separate a number of other elements into parts as the story moves along — from the color grading and lighting to the sound design and mise-en-scène — to fully understand the director's vision and grasp the actual tale.
The thing about Renaissance as a whole is that it doesn't breathe enough for me. It feels chaotic like a tide than a flow if I let it run straight through. Give me spatial, darling! But that's the intentional, heavy-handed part about Renaissance, especially on the heels of a post-pandemic world: "Get tf up, dance and feel good." I don't wanna dance; I just wanna listen 😩 lol
Side note:
We all have a specific musical palette as to why we fully gravitate to some songs/albums and not to others. I posted my review of Susan Roger’s book, This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You, a few months ago. (She was Prince's sound engineer from 1983 to 1988.) If you’re curious about why you like the music you like, I recommend for you to read it.

Interview;
Q: What are the four points of the crown?
A: The four points are style, success, service and scholarship.
Q: Which point on the crown means the most to you?
A: Scholarship means the most for me as I had to teach myself a lot of the code that I use for multiple projects. It is also something I’d essentially would like to pursue as a job and teach others so that we as a collective can further break down barriers to joining the field of stem.

Why Choose a CNC Machine Shop in Dallas, Texas
Tumblr media
Why Choose a CNC Machine Shop in Dallas, Texas?
Dallas, Texas is the fastest growing metro area in the country and is home to many diverse industries. These include oil and gas, health care, telecommunications, and more. The oil and gas industry in Texas relies on high quality CNC machining to manufacture complex components like Bates Machine. Owens can machine these components with tight tolerances and precision.
Oil & Gas
The oil and gas industry is one of the largest in the world, generating hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Despite recent challenges, the
Tumblr media
oil and gas sector is recovering from the economic downturn and major environmental disasters of recent years. The industry is broken into three main operational sectors: upstream, midstream and downstream. The upstream sector involves the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. Once oil and gas are extracted, they need to be transported to a refinery, where they can be refined and distributed. This process can include transportation by tanker ships, pipelines or trucking fleets. The oil and gas industry is a vital part of our economy and society, even in the face of increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the industry is facing a unique set of issues that challenge how and where they will invest in future development and growth. These issues include energy security, supply diversification, and the low-carbon transition.
Medical
The medical industry is a large and growing part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Some of the top employers include UT Southwestern, Texas Health Resources, Baylor Scott & White Health and Parkland Health and Hospital system. The medical devices and supplies sector, which is led by the likes of McKesson and AmerisourceBergen, is one of the fastest growing sectors in Texas with annual growth in excess of 15 percent a year. Bates Machine in Farmersville, Texas is a family owned and operated machine shop that has been serving the DFW area since 1975. Andra Fuller (born May 29, 1979, in Houston) is an actor and stand-up comedian, best known for his role in The L.A. Complex.
The youngest of three siblings, he was educated at Baylor University where he was President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He has described the pinnacle of his stand-up career as performing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem; moving to Los Angeles, he found far less opportunity for his work as a comedian. He enjoys working in dramatic roles on the big screen, on television, and on stage with projects like You Can’t Fight Christmas, Another Man Will, True to the Game, Love by the 10th Date, Deuces, and The LA Complex. Apart from The L.A. Complex, he has worked on The Have And Have Nots, Roomieloverfriends, Brozeville, and Black Jesus, which attracted criticism for its depiction of Christ in a twentieth-century inner-city environment. He responded to this criticism by claiming that it outweighed “how much heart the show has,”’ He has appeared in Here We Go Again. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphaphialpha
