“The pace of oppression outstrips our ability to understand it.”
This is just another phenomenal line from the new episode of Andor. I genuinely felt completely floored after I heard it. Just. Stunned.
This show is exploring themes of industrialism and colonialism on such a deep and meaningful level and every time so far they have just nailed it. I’ve been completely stunned and just seen and understood.
After this line, it’s mentioned that the Empire commits so many atrocities at once so it’s impossible for anyone to focus on just one or even understand just one. It’s a sudden and swift attack designed to overwhelm and oppress people with hopelessness and normalcy.
We see this in everyday life. We see this now. This is a real life tactic used by colonialism and industrialism and capitalism, and it often effects minority communities the most. Communities of color will face the brunt of these themes, and it’s so meaningful to see these things acknowledged and explored in mainstream media.
It’s meaningful to see a predominantly non-white cast share a story about issues people of color often experience firsthand in everyday life, it’s meaningful to have this story told compassionately and seen. It’s just. Phenomenal.

BLUE AND GREEN PART 2 SPOILERS
Honestly don't really have a lot to say about this special, it just felt like a really long episode which isn't bad but they were hyping this up as an actual movie type special, the ending really surprised me though.
I really like this photo I hope the next one doesn't have that awful Wild Horse CPS
Tumblr media
Ahhhhhh get it off get it off!!!
Tumblr media
Oooo Zach and Paisley and no Rex?!?! (I hope he got fired ((the cartoon not the VA)) but honestly they need to use Paisley more often she's a good villain and could be a great villain if they utilized her more
Tumblr media
I like how the face is drawn, I don't know why but there's something about it that makes me laugh.
Tumblr media
Wait what's going on....
Tumblr media
YO THEY REDEMMED PAISLY?!?! My reaction was very similar to Zach just because I felt like it came out of nowhere
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
A New Charecter Design to?!?!
Tumblr media
How did all these kids get to Madagascar!?!
But it was also nice to see WK kids from the older episodes but I'm just shocked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought this special was alright I was expecting a bit more with the villains instead of them just being like "oh the Wild Kratts are here, where are we gonna build?" Until the very end and the Kratts Brothers apologizing for getting mad at eachother over colors but the animal facts were phenomenal as always, for the hype they were giving this special I wish it was a bit better but I'll take what I can get. I'm giving it a 7.5/10

alright here we go…. these are my One Piece: Live Action thoughts and critiques now that i’ve finished binge watching the show!
overall rating is a 6.5/10 on a Netflix original scale with some episodes being below that and some being above. (EDIT: before you throw tomatoes pls know that i highly enjoyed it!!!!! just had some thoughts on how it could have been improved in my own humble opinion!!)
(spoilers under cut)
initial praises:
the FUCKING CAST. they are all so good!!!! i admittedly had low expectations for some characters prior to watching (i.e. shanks, mihawk, garp) due to how iconic and mysterious they are, but i feel like they all did a phenomenal job bringing these characters to life
THE STRAW HAT CHEMISTRY. from the second i saw the cast interviews, i knew they were gonna be perfect, but the core cast truly was brilliant together
BUGGY 🗣️🗣️🗣️ listen. i’ve always been a buggy denier…… i understood the Power of His Ponytail for others, but never really got it for myself. that being said…….. JEFF WARD POPPED OFF. imo buggy had potential to be either just okay or the worst part of the show. and jeff, my guy, you knocked it out of the fucking park
visuals!!!!! the practical set was beautiful, and the coloring was so perfect for how fantastical the one piece world is. it was really immersive and i was super impressed!
makeup and costumes were fabulous. i know people clowned arlong’s design from the trailers, but i always really liked it bc of its practical effects and watching his full performance in the show was icing on the cake. the fishmen all looked incredible! absolutely spot on from the costume and makeup departments
drunk usopp???? need it like i need air
suave but unpervy sanji???? please, oda, bring him back i BEG
luffy’s curly hair 😭
zoro and nami’s interactions?? chef’s kiss. loved how they made each other work for their trust and friendship
all the little cameos to diff characters in wanted posters
the cgi they did use looked so fucking flawless. like the sea king and buggy’s devil fruit? it was truly a spectacle
the bad and the ugly:
the writing. i have to say, while i thought some parts were fine, i thought other aspects of the writing (namely the parts NOT written by oda) were lacking and stereotypical. it seemed like there was a real need in the writers room to spell everything out for the audience about the one piece world, when i really don’t think that is necessary. part of the charm is how whimsical the world is and how unhurried the east blue beginning arc felt. and they inserted a lot of weird bullshit i felt didn’t fit the original story
on that same note: the straw hat bonding was weak imo. i am a nami-stan to the day i die, but i really felt like they used her character to override the developments between luffy and the other straw hats. i think having nami present in axe-hand morgan’s base with luffy/zoro immediately discredited the initial bond that the two boys were supposed to have. i get why they did it, and i never thought i’d see the day where i wouldn’t want to see more nami, but i feel like her presence during that moment, her convo with kaya, and her staying for baratie really stole important bonding moments from luffy and each of the boys.
similar to that: luffy’s characterization. (note: i adore iñaki! this has nothing to do with him, just how the writers wrote luffy.) i don’t think the writers knew how to approach writing luffy or even zoro for that matter—which, to be fair, they are difficult characters to write. but i think they got very focused on trying to explain or make sense of luffy for the viewers when i truly think the appeal to pre-time skip op is how both the audience and the straw hat crew are constantly learning more and more about who luffy is through his actions. and in tandem, they didn’t know how to flesh out luffy and zoro’s relationship. where animanga luffy and zoro are bonded because they innately seem to just get one another, i think the LA writers didn’t trust that either their script or the actors portraying them could get that across as well without having them literally spell it out for us. and in turn, i think it really watered down their connection when that bond should be one of the absolute strongest.
okay i’m beginning to realize that all my critiques have to do with writing
like, they didn’t show us how much each village comes to love the straw hats???? which is a HUGE part of why we and everyone in the world adores them??????????
little (and big) things about the characters that got lost in the LA: zoro’s sense of humor, usopp’s love of bugs (seriously, he wouldn’t be spooked by a damn spiderweb, cmon), nami being a weather prodigy, usopp being a sniping prodigy, bellemere and nojiko having hope bc infant nami was laughing, luffy only doing stuff bc he wants to, luffy and zoro not caring about the details of nami’s history, sanji bonding w luffy bc he was strong and kind and joining because luffy asked him to, helmeppo’s falling out w his father (like if you’re gonna put so much of him in there at least set up his backstory correctly???), arlong seeing zoro’s wound from mihawk, arlong park walk???!, and so many other things honestly…..
in general, the whimsy of the world was lacking. so much of what sets one piece (especially at the beginning) apart from other shows is how much fun it is. i get that netflix wanted to netflixify this world, but that’s not why we fell in love w the show. we want to see them goofing off, we want to see all the silly, ridiculous jokes. we want the hilarity of it all and how each character (no matter how cool) is still subject to being a fool at times. usopp’s character really brought a lot of life to the show after he was introduced, which i am infinitely grateful for, but i think the writers forgot the core of the show: the fun of it all.
OH. and here is my biggest gripe of them all……. THE FUCKING MARINES. like holy shit, i didn’t realize i was watching a fucking military propo??? i understand they wanted to make koby more relevant for the story but fuck, did we really need fifteen minutes every episode dedicated to the marines???? i loved koby and garp’s actors, but all the focus on them (WHEN THEY ARENT EVEN IN THE EAST BLUE MUCH AT ALL) really soured me on their characters tbh. they robbed us of so much time that could have been spent on any of the above issues listed just for the sake of adding fish-eye-lens close-ups of them shootin’ the shit with each other. it’s like they didn’t want new viewers becoming unsympathetic to the fucking military even tho oda specifically wrote marines as antagonists lmao. truly, i think all the issues i had w the show could have been fixed if they simply didn’t make so much of it about garp and koby.
along w that thought: someone—anyone—please tell me why they needed a garp and luffy confrontation in this first fucking season. please, help me understand. because imo, that was the most atrocious thing they could have done. they literally cut out KEY PARTS to the arlong park arc just to make room for it. the arlong park bit was so badly fumbled imo. making nojiko and the villagers actually hate nami instead of pretending to??? TOMATO TOMATO TOMATO. saying nami asked to join arlong instead of him forcing her to?? FUCKING AWFUL. having luffy chase nojiko down for the story instead of his “i don’t need to know it, i just need her to rely on us”???!!!! fine, go ahead and erase a crucial part of his character. and don’t even get me started on how garp’s moment completely replaced nami’s iconic “goodbye” to coco village and genzo telling luffy not to make her cry. seriously, i could go on for hours about those episodes alone.
additionally, they made the whole “luffy didn’t tell us about his grandpa being a marine” thing like an issue in the crew when that is not at all how it should have gone. the entire point of garps original intro as luffy’s grandpa in animanga is that we AND the straw hats have spent enough time with luffy to understand that he doesn’t say more than what needs to be said. while we were all surprised, no one (not even his crew) are upset about him withholding that. so to introduce garp so early in the plot and then make it a whole moment of dissent for the crew is fucked up and pointless.
i really think they only added so much of the marines because they were worried there weren’t enough “stakes” to push luffy and the crew forward in the narrative, but that is utter bullshit because the ENTIRE point of the east blue arc is that it’s BEFORE luffy ever has a bounty—before he ever is being truly chased—so EVERYTHING he does is simply for the pure sake that he WANTS TO. and that is precisely why each crew member loves him. that’s why WE love him.
last but not least: where tf was hatchan??? ☹️
overall, my problem with the LA so far is that i feel as if the writer’s don’t have a full grasp on the straw hats, and while they were writing the story, things that should’ve been central to their personas got left behind. it felt like since they didn’t feel like they understood luffy as a character, they tried to overcompensate by making him into something he isn’t.
the outline for everything was there and i think it was still a very fun watch, but im left longing for the magic and catharsis of the original story. in the end, it was entertaining but really just made me want to rewatch the anime to get the full effect of oda’s wonderful storytelling

BUCCHIGIRI?! Rant
This show could have been so great. It could have been my everything. It was so cute when I first discovered it. The character designs are PHENOMENAL, the setting in fantastic, the colors are so vibrant and gorgeous—it is a visual masterpiece. Every character is so interesting, the story is actually engaging and cute. IT IS ALSO SO GAY OMG I LOVE IT! The men are all over each other and Ara-chan every episode, I’m not even making this shit up. It could have been so amazing.
But they ruined it.
They failed me and my love because of one character.
Mahoro Jin.
This girl…when you first see her is so adorable, so sweet. It’s unassuming. She’s got the whole heart aesthetic going on, lots of pink—instantly I was thinking about all the cute figures that were going to come out for her and how she was going to become a fav character of mine! She’s a nice soft character who you’re like “Oh! She’s a very cute love interest for this anime. I can’t wait to see where their love goes!” And all is well. For the first half of episode one. Then…all hell breaks loose when we meet Marito, her brother.
Don’t get me wrong, I ADORE Marito!!! Marito is a stunning character and I love him to death, I am obsessed. He’s so handsome and I love his vibes. However…I am not the only one who is obsessed with him.
THIS 👏🏻 CHICK 👏🏻 ROMANTICALLY 👏🏻 LOVES 👏🏻 HER 👏🏻 BROTHER 👏🏻
🥲
I haven’t been this disappointed in such a long time. Why? Why does anime do this to us? Why does it hurt me in such a violent and awful way? Why does it take so much from me? Literally cried after it was revelaved that she wants on her brother to LOVE and fight for her. Nearly threw up.
She was a great character and then we saw the truth, and it’s all inc*st with her now. GROSS. Every sentence that comes out of her goddamn mouth is about this man that I love(d, depending if I can stomach more of this God forsaken relationship) and it’s weirding me tf out. She appears in every other scene and quite literally ONLY talks about him. It’s so fucking disappointing. I think she’s only had one or two sentences that had nothing to do with her brother after we were introduced to him, and that’s fucking sad.
If I were to revamp this series, I would immediately change her character. Don’t get me wrong, I would keep her as a character because she has a great design, but make her want/talk about something ANYTHING else. If she had any other interests to share and, ya know, wasn’t looking to bang her sibling, it would have been fine! It’s vile that the author literally only uses her to remind everyone that she’s obsessed with her brother and wants to ROMANTICALLY be involved with him.
The ONLY redeeming thing is that Marito doesn’t return her feelings AT ALL. But it’s not helping my cringing at all. It makes the experience so fucking awful. Every time I try to enjoy it again, she’s rears her ugly head around and starts yapping.
I wanted to like this show so fucking bad…but her behavior ruins it so much that I can’t watch it.
It breaks my heart to see such promising new animes rely so heavily on these overused DISGUSTING themes when there is LITERALLY NO GODDAMN NEED FOR THEM!!! They weird everyone out, and you shit on a perfectly wonderful story by adding it. I wish they’d stop to let this go.
Sorry that was a long rant, but I had to let the people know my thoughts and violent feelings on this. I want to smack this author so bad, my hand is ITCHING for the opportunity one day.
Rest in piss, Bucchigiri.

Things I Love #2: WATCH OJAMAJO DOREMI.
Tumblr media
Okay so. context.
A while back, way earlier this year if memory serves correctly, my friend Dyna (y'know from the streams) found a peculiar song in the girl idol band rhythm game they like. Upon investigating, they learned that was an official cover of the theme song for a 1999 magical girl anime with a very niche cult following here in the states. They looked into it further, watched a video explaining why the show is so great, saw it for themselves, and after becoming thoroughly obsessed, convinced me somehow to watch the entire 200+ episode run with them.
And it. was.
Worth it.
I say it without an ATOM of hyperbole that this is genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Like. Seriously, no bits no laughs no nothing, this silly little pastel-colored show is utterly phenomenal in more ways that I can do it justice. It's genuinely that good. It's hilarious, it's intense, and it made me cry and intensely hilarious number of times. It's legitimately a show that makes me happier to be alive when I think about it.
And one of the main cast members looks like this for the majority of the show.
Tumblr media
...Okay maybe it deserves a little more context.
So, okay, plot summary:
Doremi (the pink one) is a silly, short-tempered, and chronically unlucky grade schooler who kind of sucks at... most things, to be frank. And one thing she sucks at that actually bothers her is her inability to muster up the courage to one day confess to a boy she likes. Logically, the only way she'd be able to confess is if she had magic, so she's also obsessed with witches, and one day becoming a witch herself. (Good news for her incoming.)
One day, she goes to a mysterious old house, and finds an equally mysterious woman inside with a cat. Just kind of, y'know, as a hunch. She accuses the woman of being a witch, which causes her to spontaneously turn into the green creature seen above.
This is Majo Rika, a genuine article but short-tempered witch, and the cat is secretly her fairy companion Lala. When a witch's identity is found out by a human, they get cursed into being a silly little creature known as a Witch Frog, and the only way to turn back into their original form is for the human who found them out to become a witch themself, and then use their magic to turn the witch frog back to normal. This, very conveniently, means Doremi now has to become a Witch Apprentice, learn magic, pass the apprentice exams, and eventually earn the honor of becoming a full witch herself.
Along the way, some of Doremi's friends get caught up in the secret, including her childhood friend Hazuki, the soft-spoken sweetheart (and my favorite of the apprentices but quite not my favorite character outright), and the new transfer student Aiko, the cool-headed tomboy who rocks the blue. Together, they all train to be witch apprentices, learning under Majo Rika, and working at her house, which is turned into a magical crafts shop, the Maho Dou. A few more witch apprentices join them along the way, but aside from them they have to keep their witchy business a secret from everyone else.
Now that we've established the basics, I think I'll continue the tradition of posting the show's theme song in each of these. Doremi has a 4-ish season run, with each season getting its own OP in standard anime fare, but I think the first and most iconic opening, Ojamajo Carnival, should suffice:
youtube
Oh yeah, might help to explain what "Ojamajo" means. It's a pun that roughly means "bothersome witch", since "Majo" is "Witch" and "Ojama" means "bothersome" or "annoying." So the title would more directly be "Bothersome Witch Doremi" but literally everyone prefers "Ojamajo" so. yeah.
Anyways, theme song shows a lot about the show that's great.
For one is the art style, which I'd say is "pleasant" in the most intensely delightful sense of the word. The designs themselves are all nice, soft, and delightful, with hardly a sharp corner in sight and a real sense of childlike whimsy permeating through it all. The general color palette and style of the show also just has a nostalgic fuzziness, even after the show's technical quality improves over its 4 year run. And the animation I adored as soon as episode 1, with characters frequently deforming to goofy faces and round nub hands right out of Animal Crossing. Hey, I don't blame them, I wouldn't wanna draw full hands for over 200 episodes either.
Another thing is the soundtrack. I don't know what terms to describe its genre, but beyond just the bombastic opening, with its cheery violin, twangy guitar, and overall exuberant joy, the soundtrack for each episode is also full of bangers. There's upbeat jazz to stir up excitement for energetic scenes, pleasant standard background tracks, and even some unexpectedly tense tracks for some dramatic scenes. This is also a show that will make you cry, and that includes even just from the ending themes. Here's season 1's:
youtube
That plays during an episode and I become a sopping mess without fail. Gets me every time.
The other big thing is arguably the show's biggest strength: its cast. While I won't go in-depth on the main cast, both for the sake of spoilers and because people have done that better than me already, I will give the show its due respect for its more broad cast. As the intro implies, the girls' entire class are notable side characters. While a good number of episodes focus on magical trials and hijinks, the majority of the show actually has the girls encounter a problem their classmates are facing, and then secretly use magic to help solve that problem. It's a formula that not only keeps things fresh with making different side characters the spotlight of an episode, but also rewards following along as the show progresses. Even the most obscure background classmates (save for I think ONE exception) will be the focus of an episode, and remember how Doremi and the gang helped them out. You can even see characters from past episodes in almost every group shot, and get to go "oh hey it's that kid!" in a really satisfying way. It really helps add to the childhood feel of the show, since... yeah, back then, your classmates were the stars of each day's adventures, and even if you weren't close friends you still knew their names would hang out every day. The teachers are also great characters in their own rights, again hearkening back to elementary days where teachers really were there for you. The cast isn't limited to the classroom though. The girls' families often factor into their more personal episode plots as well. And the magical side of things has its own small recurring cast. Witches actually reside in, another dimension known as the Witch World, a pastel-colored world with a striking visual appeal of its own right, and is also home to a cast of additional witch characters that get introduced over the course of the show.
Of course, the only important one is the underhanded saleswitch who barges into the Maho Dou with a smile and a song:
Dela.
Tumblr media
Yeah no she's the best character and nothing's changing that.
Not kidding about her song by the way:
youtube
Literally every single time she appears, she sings a unique (shorter) version of this song to announce her arrival. It's fantastic.
So yeah, that's the basics of what makes this show great, but like... again, this show is insane, and there is SO much more I could say but won't, I'd rather people just experience it for themselves.
Which... brings us to how you experience this show yourself.
I should explain first that Doremi didn't take off in the west. Unlike her home country, which still has a dedicated fanbase who remembers the show fondly, English-speaking countries were stuck with...
*dramatic lightning crash*
the 4kids dub.
The dub, otherwise known as Magical DoReMi, is widely considered to be a downgrade from the original by fans. Look up the opening compared to the original and you'll see what I mean. Though the quality is one thing, the real way 4kids screwed the show over was by greatly limiting its airtime due to it being "another boring girl show", kneecapping its potential popularity severely. They only ever dubbed the first season, and the second half of that was limited to an online-only release if I remember right.
Now, while the show itself was a relatively failure over here, apparently toy sales didn't do too bad actually. And I know that specifically, because when I told my partner I was watching Doremi, they went "Wait WHAT" and proceeded to show me pictures of their childhood Doremi toys. Apparently they even came with a bonus DVD, though only for one episode. My friend Seven also had Doremi toys and a bonus DVD of that one episode too, so uh... small world, huh?
But yeah, with this in mind, it shouldn't be surprising that Doremi has such a limited english-speaking fanbase, and thus should be even less surprising that there is no official way to watch the show here. There is no newer dub of the whole show, and no official subtitles. I managed to watch the show thanks to the efforts of fanmade subs, and though there's some unfortunate dated language early on, it's otherwise an extremely commendable effort that I can't thank enough for making it possible. As for how to access this subbed version... I mean come on, if you're reading this, you're an adult on the internet, you can figure out how. I know pity for corporations is comically low on this site but if you need help feeling better about it, remember that there is no way to officially watch the show as an english speaker. If they do make official subs and stream the show somewhere, I'll let you know, but that seems extremely unlikely.
As for what you watch then, Doremi has 4 main seasons of roughly 50 episodes each, and then one weird bonus season. Each season after the first one has a subtitle: season 2 is Ojamajo Doremi Sharp, 3 is Motto, and 4 is Dokkan. There's also Naisho, a shorter set of about 17 episodes that takes place during the same time as Motto, but was made years after the main show originally ended. I watched episodes of Naisho sprinkled in with my watchthrough of Motto, but there's also merit to watching it in release order, at least the final episode. There are also two episode-length "movies" that take place about midway through a couple seasons: one for Sharp, and one for Motto. Finally, made for the 20th anniversary back in 2020, there's the feature-length film "Looking for Ojamajo Doremi", which was the final thing of the show I watched, and just finished tonight actually. It's not directly in the same "canon" as the show itself, but I highly recommend it as a great finale to a watchthrough of the show as a whole.
It's a long ride, but it's worth it. I genuinely wouldn't skip any episodes, as again, even minor characters are worth remembering for later. It's not a show with "filler", because what you're there for is a simple and relaxing slice of life style show that takes it easy to appreciate the mundane joys of just being nice and helping others. Plus, it makes the absolutely fantastic gut punch of a finale all the more worth it.
I really can't say enough about this show. It's genuinely better than I can put into words. If you have the time (and a soul) then please, PLEAAAASE consider giving it a watch, I swear it's worth it.
So that's this Things I Love. Not sure what the next one will be actually. These won't all be shows, so maybe expect a game next? Could also be a show that I'm due to finish a watch or rewatch of too, like a certain other show where a weird girl stumbles into a witch and her creature companion, and then learns to be a witch herself. We'll see though. In the meantime, uhhh... Rabbids? I think I was talking about Rabbids for some reason.

RWBY Volume 9 Episode 10: Of Solitude and Self
i have thoughts. here are some of those thoughts.
I am going...to try and keep this in chronological order, but it's midnight, and I tend to ramble the longer I've been awake. So bear with me.
First off, okay, so we're definitely going to get details of exactly what happened with Summer later down the line. Presumably, she, Raven, and Qrow ('cause who else would Raven have portaled too yanno), along with maybe some others who knows, went on the offensive vs Mommy Salami and things didn't work out. If that's the case, boy does that color Qrow's character even further. It's no wonder he used to stay far away from the people he cares about. Also wow Raven nice to see you again, been a couple of volumes.
I'm glad that Rubes got to have a sort of posthumous pep-talk from her mother, even if it's something as simple as "I love you the way you are". I appreciate that she didn't need to be talk-no-jutsu'd into getting the theme of the volume, but rather it's a conclusion she came to herself. After a whole volume of seeing her all morose and depressed, it put the biggest smile on my face to see her finally accept that she is Ruby Rose, and that's all she's ever needed to be.
On a less profound note
WHOOOO RED LIKE ROSES PART III FUCK YEAH BABY THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITIN FOR THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. Whoever animated that first little sequence of Ruby going ham on the cat with Crescent Rose? I want to kiss you. You deserve the world. Brings me right back to volume 1. (Was it Arryn? I feel like it was Arryn considering how much they love Soul Eater but I can't remember if they've done any combat sequences aaaah)
The Cat got the shit kicked out of them in a great team fight. Doing a whole ass 5 v 1, even with someone as formidable as the CC in the fray, couldn't have been easy to choreograph, so props to the whole team on that one for making it feel sick. The Cat is a bit of a more tragic character in retrospect with the tale the Blacksmith told (also--the Ever After is the primordial world? The Brothers didn't make it? Shit, color me surprised), but at the same time...yeah RIP Bozo.
'Twas curiosity that killed the cat or something like that idk
The fuckin piano reprise of This Will Be the Day oh my GOOOOOD. Chills. The music in this volume has been absolutely phenomenal. Of course there are the vocal tracks, but the score??? Martin Gonzalez you beautiful man. Bless your heart, bless your body, bless your soul.
Neo. Neo Neo Neo. Neopolitan, baby girl...I'm gonna miss you, as I'm sure a lot of people will. Even the people who hate this show like you because you're just so much fun. I remember back in the day when I was a kid and unironically used the word waifu to describe female characters I was fixated on, you were my precious little Ice Cream Wife and I would burn the world for you. It's so weird thinking about your origins as a character (Inspired by a genderbent Torchwick cosplay, Monty threw you in at the last second in order to not have to animate Torchwick escaping...though I'm sure there's more to it than that), to how you've progressed, to where you are now. This is the last we're gonna get of you for now, I'm sure. But at the same time, I can totally see you showing up for the final fight vs Salem or Cinder or whoever to get your licks in. You were a welcome addition this volume, even if you DID drive Ruby to drink the Bad Tea. It's hard to hate you when you're so fucking cute.
I am...not going to pretend to not be a little disappointed that Boomer Jaune was but a temporary thing. When The Blacksmith was talking about Alyx fixing what she'd broken, I was expecting like, idk, his sword to be repaired, but I quickly realized that she wasn't even the one who did that, and then I was like "oh no" and before I knew it, BAM back at it again with the yee-yee ass haircut. At least next volume comes with new designs so we won't have to deal with that any longer. I appreciate the streaks of grey, symbolizing that it's not like he's regressed in any way, but...Jauney Boy, get that wolf's tail back. You rocked that shit.
That's all I can bring myself to write down for now. I'm sure I'll be talking about this episode--and this whole volume--for a WHILE. I'm gonna sit on it for a bit, but I think it might take volume 6's spot for my favorite of the bunch, which is impressive because volume 6 is hella good y'all. Thank you so much to the crew (GOD I hope certain people who worked on this volume return for the next one, I could feel the love they have for the craft and for this show and I've adored getting to see their thoughts on each episode as it aired these past few weeks) and everyone involved in bringing to us. It's been rough lately, that's for sure, but I mean it when I say that RWBY is one of my favorite shows out there, and I wish nothing but the best for its future and the future of everyone who brought it to life.
now I wait probably about a year or so to see Nora/Ren/Sun's reaction to Blake and Yang finally getting together. Until then, I will drown myself in fanfiction.

Good Stuff: Batwheels
or How to Stop Worrying and Ride with the Punchline
Tumblr media
I remember watching the surprisingly kino Teen Titans GO! movie and getting to the scene where they have the trailers for Alfred Pennyworth and then the Batmobile. I of course snickered poshly and then continued watching the film. It was the year after when they premiered an Alfred series set in the Gotham TV universe and I went "Cool." I didn't care for either so I chuckled robotically and moved on. Then in 2020, they announced a Batmobile kids cartoon and the joke stopped being funny. First, the world descends into madness faster, and now we were getting BATWHEELS?! COMING VROOM?!?!?! Felt like I became the joke because I had to know what it would be like. So it's the current year and this was finally released on Cartoonito. What do I think of it? It's actually pretty fire.
Tumblr media
Didn't think we'd get two nickels worth of good cars content this year
To preface, yeah this is more for preschoolers but thankfully it's more family-friendly since it's just entertaining you with crime-fighting adventures. I say it's like a Hot Wheels show that has the vibes of Batman: Brave and the Bold. It works like it feels stupid at first but they run with it; it's like 60s Batman or the Lego Batman Movie where things can get serious but it doesn't have to be serious. It's best to watch the first episode to get the origin story which explains how the cars become sentient. Otherwise, the titular Batwheels work like the Batfamily and it's an enjoyable romp about teamwork, leadership, and getting tricky. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
This series looks amazing like hell yes Neon Gotham
The coloring, character designs, and animation of this are phenomenal. I love the use of 2D particle effects and how the vehicles are able to be expressive. We don't reach Pixar levels of uncanny but aren't just static either. Some goofy ass nerd'll go "Oh, this is just to sell toys" and I'd honestly say "Fuck yeah" because the human and vehicle characters look on point. If you're gonna sell a product, make it worth the purchase. I don't know if this'll go beyond a couple seasons unless they expand the roster but I can see kids loving the look of all this. My only issue... is Joker. He looks zoomerfied, dressed like a bedazzled goober, and is the worse looking out of everyone.
Tumblr media
This ain't Joker bro, this is The Jickler #NoJoke
I like how this is both about the vehicles finding their place as heroes and the human heroes you know doing their job. We get a surprisingly diverse cast like it's the first time seeing Duke Thomas Robin on screen. Ethan Hawke works well as Bats, though he's not Will Arnett I'm sorry. The show's probably limiting since it's about cars, but they knew better than to just make this Batman™ except everyone's a car for some reason. The cars don't upstage the heroes and villains, it manages to be a great introduction to the Batman universe. I dunno, something goofy like this surprises me in being a competent, fun-loving action cartoon that makes me forget the turmoil I've been having lately about superhero content. Just saying, the last time I said the word "capeshit", ten angels cried and this series is like the fresh air I needed since Peacemaker.
Tumblr media
Takes me back to the Bat Credit Card days anew
This and Hamster & Gretel do good in being superhero shows that work more than expected. I admittedly am tired of Batman being everywhere like when will Green Lantern have his turn again? At the same time, this is cooler than I figured. If you told me in 3rd grade we were gonna have a Batmobile cartoon, I would laugh in your face. If you told me this before 2020 happened, I would still laugh. Now that we're here... I have to kneel. I was gonna point this a 7 or 8 out of 10 cuz you know it's a simple, fun time; good for Saturday mornings. You know what though? For actually sticking the landing and proving me as a naysayer wrong...

TOH’S end. (Not spoilers though!)
I just finished watching the final episode of The Owl House. I will not give spoilers until some time has passed but I do wanna talk about what it means for me.  Animated Series and Videogames have always had a special place in my heart, they have been the one thing that always bring out the purest of emotions in me, I have felt so much love and joy from the smallest of moments and even sadness too. For me these things, these stories are not just something to watch for fun or entertainment, for me they are art. Animation is an art that is beyond phenomenal because it’s a combination of so many things, an art piece like this has so many things to be talked about, the backgrounds, the colors, the character designs, the characters themselves, props, the story, the voices, gosh darn the music and so much more. I love learning and picking up every detail of these things. Making fanfics, fanart, it’s a way to connect with these worlds, to keep looking into their potential.  I have followed this era of animated series since I was a kid, TMNT 2003 and 2012, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Svtfoe, The Owl House etc. I watched many as they were just starting and was a little late for some others but still, I grew with them and they’re the reason I am pursuing a career that hopefully will let me create a story such as this on my own so others can get to feel what I felt. I feel like with The Owl House an era has ended in many ways and I don’t know what my future holds but it would be really cool if more of these fantastical stories were in it.  I wanna thank all the creators of these shows and hope I can live up to them one day. And thank you The Owl House for filling part of a void that was in my heart, I will hold you there forever. Mari out.

The Fire Hunter (Hikari no Ou) #1 Screenplay: Mamoru Oshii Storyboard: Junji Nishimura Episode Director: Junji Nishimura Assistant Episode Director: Yukiko Sugano Chief Animation Director: Takuya Saito Animation Director: Yuriko Ikehara, Kazuko Nakayama
This is my favorite premiere for Winter 2023. Everything about it was stunning and unique. The beautiful, yet solemn character designs are matched by the haunting and rather almost post-apocalyptic setting of a world that's lost its fire, its hope.
A collaboration of veterans in the industry Mamoru Oshii and Junji Nishimura gives this anime a very early 2000s feel. And it truly stands out from the copy-and-paste fantasy format shows we've gotten lately. We're off to a very unique adventure with our young protagonist in Touko, who may I mention has an amazing voice performance from Misaki Kuno. I'm extremely excited to see what's to come next in future episodes.
I can't leave off without mentioning the beautiful opening and ending visuals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The opening visual of the show is directed, storyboarded, and AD by Kenichi Kutsuna, whose use of colors and lack of shading is just simply phenomenal. We've seen works like this from him in the Vlad Love opening and also the "Back to You" music video on the Animator Dormitory Channel that I highly recommend you check out. The background and shading of the characters at times are minimalistic and at times highly detailed. The way he handles the switch between details and shadow is extremely interesting to see. When there are fewer shadows and details on the characters, he tends to emphasize the wide and minimalistic background, which leaves you and the characters in isolation. A flawed representation of the world. And he only brings up highly detailed shots and shading on the cast, during character-focused shots such as the zoom-in on Touko's eyes showing the literal fire (determination) in her eyes to complete her goal, whatever it may be. It's a genius switch between focusing on the foreground and the background, by utilizing the lack of details. This is likely my favorite opening visual for Winter 2023.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ending reminded me a lot of Shiraishi Keito's ending direction, it's very flat in its nature on purpose, and the character just side-scrolling pass the art in the background. However, it's actually not directed by Shiraishi Keito, it's directed and SB by Yukiko Sugano. It's a rather simple opening in terms of direction, a long stretch of uninterrupted gorgeous art, that I believe will only mean more to us as more episodes come on. The flatness of Touko and her dog allows for a greater focus on the background, and they simply serve as a "tour guide" for the beautiful artwork behind them.

can you explain the storyline in critical role for me? if that's too much, who is your favorite character in critical role (and why)?
ohhhhh anon you shouldn’t have gotten me started…..
this is going to be so fucking long i’m so sorry so! critical role is a show/company comprised at it’s core of eight friends, all of whom are professional voice actors, playing dungeons & dragons together. they have 3 campaigns, the third of which is currently happening, as well as many oneshots, talk shows, an animated show, and more. each campaign has a very in-depth storyline, but i’ll do a brief summary of each of them. campaign 1 is vox machina, a ragtag band of mercenaries who become dragon-slaying, vampire-killing, god-fighting heroes. the characters (in my opinion) are all very lovable, and there's some really great romantic, platonic, and familial relationships. it's probably the most cliche in it's representation of fantasy and d&d so i recommend it for people who like that. there's also an animated show of it on amazon prime with one season out and another on the way! no knowledge of critical role is needed to watch the show,, it's how i got into cr in the first place. campaign 2 is the mighty nein, a bunch of fucked up and morally gray people who make a really good adventuring-team-turned-found-family. there’s a lot more diversity in these characters in terms of species/race than in campaign one, which can be enjoyable if you want your characters with horns and tails and tusks and funky-colored skin. full disclosure, i probably know the least about the mighty nein so some of the more complicated plot lines are more confusing to me,, that being said, i’ve still watched a lot of campaign 2 stuff and i adore them a whole lot. campaign 3 is bell’s hells, who really are just some guys that accidentally got involved in something way bigger than any of them. they’re all so dumb and easily trusting and so very lovely <3 there’s some really cool character designs and concepts, which i love. they’re currently on episode 34 of this campaign, so it’ll be going on for a while longer (the other two campaigns are 100+ episodes), which can be fun if you like watching things live. because this is already a full length essay, i’ll keep it very brief on the favorite characters part… my favorite characters are the three played by liam o’brien: vax’ildan, caleb widogast, and orym. liam is just such a phenomenal actor and his characters are so sad and emotional and fantastic and yeah i just love all three of them a whole lot <3 every campaign has moments that are wildly funny and moments that will make you cry your eyes out… there’s also fantastic queer characters in every campaign (including but not limited to aroace characters, multiple ace-spec characters, poly characters, a prominent wlw couple, and a lot more). in addition to the show, there are comics for campaigns one and two, and a published novel with one more on the way. anyways. i’m so sorry for how long this is, but that’s what you get for asking a neurodivergent person about their hyperfixation i guess 🤷‍♀️ i know critical role can seem like a lot, and that turns many people off of it, but you really don’t have to watch the entire thing in order to be a fan. i’ve been intensely hyperfixated on it for seven months, and i’ve watched one (1) episode in its entirety. it really is so so good and such a fun gateway into d&d as well as just a very enjoyable group of people to help restore your faith in humanity and bring a smile to your face. i could not recommend it highly enough.

final score: wheel of time show. split by section
first few episodes: not so great, skipped most of it. nice music and landscapes. bold approach to the world and characters that mostly improves it from the books. kind of goofy cgi. some cliched writing choices and stiff acting. while the casting directors clearly wanted to make this a multiethnic world with a large cast of people of color, colorism and antiblackness is still a part of casting/designs (dark-skinned characters usually being the most evil, the mostly white tuatha'an having dreadlocks). 6/10
middle/late episodes: better! fun and exciting. great costumes! solid acting. cold open tigraine fight was probably my favorite scene. absolutely phenomenal. I want to meet the aiel!!! 8-9/10.
final episode: production took a turn for the worse. missed opportunities and nonsensical decisions. underwhelming finale. too many characters with not enough to do - loose writing. probably confusing for non book readers. lighting was garbage. couldn't tell what was happening half the time. fights were exciting and in general had good outcomes and some good character moments. however heretofore unseen xenophobia and orientalism in the final scene brings the entire season down. 4/10

Masterpiece, re-experienced. — A Persona 3 Reload Review
Tumblr media
Persona 3 Reload - 9.5/10 Hours Played - 127 hours (one run) Completion - 100% Platinum trophy Out of all the remasters/ports that Persona has received, this is the first time they made an actual remake and it was absolutely amazing. This really shows how much the Persona team has improved over the years in terms of understanding graphics, art style, game design and combat. Almost every single aspect of this remake is better than the original, adding lots of quality of life mechanics that made it significantly more fun while also being faithful to the source material. This remake is a testament of how Persona grew as a series over the years from a niche JRPG to being out in the spotlight as a bonafide AAA game. The original game already had a phenomenal story that will forever resonate with its audience, but P3R took that and further improved it to still tug the hearts of people who played the game multiple times now. Making all the social links fully voiced definitely made all of them more memorable and entertaining even those that were pretty bad like Kenji's. P3 has some of the best but also some of the worst social links in the series, which is one of its biggest critiques. I also appreciate the new addition of night time bonding with party members as it made the dorm feel more lively compared to the original. It also made the cast feel a lot more closer as friends, because it only felt like the original cast were only people working at the same goal instead of being genuine friends. It's not on the level as the friend group in P4, but this is def more than P5 which I appreciate. The new linked episodes of the male cast who disappointingly still do not have a social link were good enough to excuse its absence.
Tumblr media
While most of the soundtrack stays the same, the new songs and covers were great. The new battle theme (It's Going Down Now) is probably my second favorite in the series. Color Your Night is an absolute bop and the new dorm music was great. In terms of graphics and art style, the original and remake are like night and day. There are more attention to detail and more expression in the environment throughout Tartarus and the city which made it feel more alive and vibrant. Some people tend to point out that the new vibrant look of P3R does not match the themes of the original's dark and gloomy, but I honestly think this new change is better. For a game that discusses the nature of life and death, making the game begin with a more colorful and cheerful city that is contrasted by the depressing and scary tones of Tartarus masterfully shows the contrast between both concepts. Additionally, as the story goes on, the city also becomes more dark and depressing similar to Tartarus which helps signifies the turmoil that is going to come to the world. It makes it feel not like a transition, but a convergence of light into dark. With this, not only does the change feel more intense, but it also matches up with the current situation of the game which is just amazing environmental storytelling.
Tumblr media
Aside from that, the new QOL changes in the simulation gameplay and combat gameplay made the game more enjoyable. It is now way easier to upgrade social stats and social links with the new arcana cards you receive in Tartarus, night bonding and using the dorm computer. It actually made it more possible to complete all the social links in the game in one playthrough, which I did without any guides. In the combat side, the new changes were just amazing. Adding huge mechanics such as Shift (called Baton Pass in P5) made all the battles feel more smooth, plus the new Theurgy mechanic (which I hope will be also in future Persona games) added a unique special move for each character that helped them have more difference in their ability as a party member. Changing between different members was fun as the remake engages players to have different compositions depending on conditions.
Tumblr media
However, the most important and easily the best change in the game is Tartarus. In the original, it was one of the most tedious and most excruciating experiences of all time. While great as a concept that matches the themes and storytelling, it's "fun" aspect was just not there. It was just an near endless grind climbing through up the floors that are almost identical to each other without any variety or additional mechanics and structures that could have made the struggle bearable. Thankfully, all of this was improved by the remake by not only making the floors better to look at, but also adding more variety into it with the Great Clock and Monad Doors which helps with both leveling up and gaining more resources that would make your team better. Not only that, the new dash and ambush mechanic made the pace of Tartarus way faster as it helps with faster advantages instead of just stalling and waiting for enemies to turn their backs. Back then, I used to just hate Tartarus and say to myself "GET ME OUTTA HERE" while now I just say "YOU CAN'T GET ME OUT OF HERE". It's a miracle what the folks at ATLUS has done, props to the team.
Tumblr media
I can't express enough how much I love this game. While P3 is still my least favorite out of the modern Persona games, it doesn't mean that it is not a masterpiece itself. As a game who made me cry the most in any piece of media ever, experiencing the game in a more modern way was special to me. The fact that this game, which I hold dear and close to my heart, is what I think is the least good modern Persona game, just signifies how amazing this series truly is. Please play it. It is peak fiction. It is fire. It is kino. It is raw. It is goated. It is a masterpiece.

October 6th [Lovecraft Country Season 1 E1 Sundown] recommendation & Werewolf by Night Day 20
Tumblr media
In light of white ignorance and decent jeapordy show framing the first watch for today is episode one of lovecraft country a TV series by a black woman show runner that recently was revealed to be controversial for its handling of the actors mental health in dealing with the subject matter. The series was based on a book written by a white man about a fictional supernatural depiction of the negro motorist green book
Tumblr media
The jeapordy question /answer was
The 1948 edition of this publication said “There will be a day … in the near future when this guide will not have to be published”
I'm not recommending the green book film as a watch not only because it's not horror but because it's Wack.
The actors mental health was at risk because the subject matter was lethal racism and despite the problems on set to a canceled show I believe hbo brought some of the best content on the subject matter and the novel it's based on is good.
Posting for cover art alone
Tumblr media
The klan ghost robes for me alone is everything horror should be
The first episode sums up the bulk of the books plot
(After an Easter egg of the youngest drawing a premonistic like drawing of monsters on their road map where they plan to visit)
Our main character is a writer for the green book and as such has to scout locations in the south rumored to be safe for black people to travel; stop eat get gas sleep, get car repair during Jim crow
Are they cool or are they going to murder us? Horror in absolute.
In this first episode they travel down to a diner rumored to be owned and operated by a certain white woman
It is quickly reveled that she WAS the owner until the local fire department burned her shit down possibly murdered her for running a non racist establishment.
They are in a Sundown town they must leave in a hurry. You may consider plot holes why go to a Sundown Town at all? If you are black in the 1940's consider you will eventually run out of gas your car will eventually get a flat and driving through whole states without stopping isn't feasible.
The episode ends with some serious lovecraftian horror but as is both the book the show and my premise is : you think science fiction existential dread is horrifying? racism is worse.
The acting is sublime the costume and set is retro stylized the pacing for this episode alone
What I like to refer to is the
Low speed chase
It's phenomenal in its summation of white supremacy and being Gaslight as a black person in America utter horror then they run into the shoggloths
Breaking the tired trope of shittily running through the woods wide open
Ending beautifully
Werewolf by night
Technical release date Oct 7 but y'alls know I be doing these after midnight

inuyasha rambles, brain goes brrrrrrrrr
hahaha love triangles in fandom are sad and hilarious. ppl get so high-strung and territorial over their ships when i feel like often times, if it's a well-done love triangle, the author goes to great lengths to show that either possibility is valid and should be appreciated on its own merits, even if you have a preference. and if it's a good story, there's so much more to the character dynamics than who ends up with who. this is applicable to ff7 as well, where i unfortunately have to see ppl eternally bickering about ships instead of celebrating the quality of drama and character relationships outside of shipping...
and it's not like inuyasha is immediately relevant in pop entertainment anymore, but uhm im back in that headspace so *shrug*
inuyasha and kagome's development was very enjoyable and well-developed. if you don't like inuyasha and kagome, what's the point of watching inuyasha lol that's the whole plot right there.
inuyasha and kikyo is what i think about nowadays because there was so much left unsaid and had the extra layer of tragedy and a yearning entirely on a different level, because they were doomed from the start. i also think kikyo and kagome could have had more meangingful interactions...like they could've just talked more and it would've been really interesting.
i really do believe inuyasha, specifically early inuyasha, is phenomenal. the best shounen i've ever seen. my favorite shounen of all time. it's a dark fairytale, it's splendid and beautiful and it can be grotesque and tragic.
the action is really dynamic and beautiful, the character designs and abilities, as well as the demon designs, are unique and stand out. the music, THE MUSIC, is gorgeous and epic. within the story, there's so much spirit and humor that is seamlessly interwoven with angst and melodrama. i'm genuinely touched by the romance every time i revisit this story (it's a romance first and foremost...i love that...). the story starts off very unique to me - the villains have cool powers and colorful personalities (sesshomaru aside, tho i enjoyed his intro episode a lot and his powers are entertaining), naraku's schemes are interesting at first (tho i get bored of him later). it makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me scream, it's a visual masterpiece, it means so much to me.
