They’re really interesting foils in many ways. I’ve always thought that Marcille & Mithrun have underrated dynamic potential. Give me the cringefail dungeon lords. Give me the elves with ears-centric metaphorical self-image issues. Give me the academic elites whose deepest strongest desires will always remain unreachable and the only option is to turn to the corrupt forbidden fruit of a demon pact. I wonder if the resemblance between captain Mithrun and general Hagreus aka Marcille’s fave in Dalclan is intentional… They definitely look very alike. It could represent idealization vs reality? Something something the romanticization of elves and their societal drama in their fiction vs a very real and imperfect product of their military system. The canaries certainly aren’t glamorous next to whatever Hagreus is the general of. I feel like she never had the opportunity to notice the resemblance herself bc within seconds of meeting him he was wrestling her on the ground but. If she had… She would so think he should have been his actor in the tallman stage play of Daltian Clan in that new extra comic hehe. I love the little details like Hagreus’ lips being drawn with extra details because they’re full and pretty while Mithrun’s lips are drawn with extra details because they’re chapped lmao.

This art is all silly and surface level but in my head mithrille is like so dramatic and I make up daltian clan level big plots with them gbdgd. I made a spotify playlist for mithrun if y’all interested, rn it’s mostly centered around cravings that consume and losing yourself and illusions inspired from his time as dungeon lord but it’s branching out. Varied vibes, levels of intensity and degrees of confusion and await you ✨ I would emotionally rant about Chainsaw Man ost lyrics and how they tie in with Mithrun and the winged lion’s relationship but this post is already a monster

Oh shi-" That last one is an aspect of why I like Marcille and Mithrun’s potential dynamic lol. She’s very… Emotionally intelligent alongside being impulsive. You think you have no feelings because the world has beaten them out of you? Think again!! Marcille be upon ye! -In a therapy sort of way but mostly in a connecting with people and your own self through interpersonal relationships and talking kinda way. I just think a lively, upbeat, annoying friend way too interested in your personal life would do him good, the canaries are nice but like if Marcille went to prison and was a sort of extra new bunkmate I think that’d be interesting and fun to read is what I’m saying

Unlike Kabru she wants all the useless messy filler of his backstory, eating chips while listening. Marcille is insecure about her ears, long, like an elf’s pride should be, but rounder, inelegant. Seeing Mithrun though, the epitome of beauty, with his half-cut ears make it a sillier thought. Not sure if Mithrun is the best person to reconnect with ur elven culture with but it sure is an option Marcille would so appreciate being around someone both cool headed and kind, I genuinely think they’d get along, like not that Senshi isn’t that too most of the time but I think Mithrun would be in a way that’s more refreshing to her. I’d be so curious about them discussing Dalclan, I doubt he’d have read it but she could make him read it, maybe post-canon with the excuse that they’re trying to find him a new hobby hah. He’d tear into the writing and everything but it’d be a fun time, I like to think that it’d make him a bit less prejudiced. starting my rewatch of ROP in prep for s2 and I think I figured out why my ass was so...grumpy?...about s1 in the first place.

Don't get me wrong its a solid show, still around a B/B+ for me, but time gives some perspective and what the Silmarillion does better than LOTR or Hobbit movies is to show that Elves are just as fucking flawed as the race of Men. For god sake they invented killing people people for stupid reasons like being denied boats they don't own (and like that event would be classified as a mass murder too). War criminals ABOUND in the SIlmarillion.

The show however, basically positions the Elves as noble creatures taking up a noble quest/burden. Sure they're bit dick-ish but they're fighting evil, they're allowed to be dick-ish, right?! Galadriel's brash but its because she's avenging her brother!

Nah fam. I want Feanor and his 7 sons fucking shit up because therapy wasn't invented yet to help them deal with their bullshit. I want Galadriel traveling to Middle Earth because she hates the Feanorians that much. I want the most messy, complex family dynamics ever reshaping Middle Earth. i knew the ending was coming and it's better than i thought it would be. jace got something good after the almost 75k words of torture (and the out of universe breakdowns of jace). i'm glad that there's a world where he's out and happy bc canon not reviving him was so fucked up after learning he didn't do this willingly.

Arianwen has spent a year with no magic, having to survive in the forest of Sylvaire and (possibly, hopefully?) reflecting on her treatment of her children. Expectations without love and all that. She will be fundamentally different to the person Jace knew, and Jace is different to the person Arianwen knew because he did have a full mental break down over the course of the past year. There's only so much one therapy session with a god can do.

Maybe this would be a better version of Arianwen though. I think she's taken some levels of ranger since she was in the forest. I think she's still "magic is the best", and that might become druid now she has her magic back, but she's not "wizards are the only people that are worthy of respect".

I can see Jace working on being a cleric. I don't think he's deliberately antagonistic towards Kristen, but I can see him connecting with wood elves returning to Sylvaire and talking to them about the version of this god that their grandparents/whoever worshipped and gradually shifting Cassandra a little.

It's fun to imagine the Court of Stars contacting Adaine to go after Arianwen, not because she's actually doing anything wrong (for once) but because her boyfriend has been undoing everything the Fallinel government did with Cassandra. When it's just Kristen and Craig, that's fine, but elves worshipping this goddess again? No, that needs to change.

I feel like after Twilight, people started labelling human/immortal ships as "problematic".

Yes, there was a lot of problematic stuff about the relationship dynamic in Twilight. (See Cinema Therapy's critiques of that relationship.) But people started using it as a springboard to find more problems with it, seemingly to virtue signal. (Or maybe to have an excuse to spotlight, on a broadly visible popular venue at the time, a real world problem with grooming's normalization? A topic which we as a society should be confronting, but unsure if making people walk on eggshells about "vampires/humans dating" is the way to do it.) It went to the point where they were nitpicking such a fantastical, unrealistic, "suspended disbelief" aspect of fantasy stories, with realistic standards that weren't really relevant to a story's themes. The entire fantasy genre had glossed-over age gaps between immortals/mortals before, because there were more important things in the story. It used to be, we'd have romances between long-lived elves and fairies and gods and other supernatural beings, with a human protagonist, and no one made accusations of grooming or problematic age gaps. We were already suspending disbelief over the fairy thing; no one was thinking about "ew, that eternally-young old man is dating a decades-younger woman". But now it's something that fandoms think about...concerning supernatural beings that don't exist...and completely fictitious stories. I dunno...Even the Cinema Therapy I just cited (if I recall correctly), also asks, "What does a hundred year old vampire have in common with a teenage human?" Those were not the discussions we used to have in the fantasy genre. Now I'm afraid to let people see me ship Bleach shinigami with human characters, or The Highlander with their significant other of the century, or Buffy/Angel. Should I be ashamed of shipping Inuyasha with Kagome? Should any ship between The Doctor and any human be called "grooming"? How about any god and the mortal mother of a demi-god? These fictitious age gaps were not the problem with those myths. These are ridiculous questions.

Yes, the Twilight canon ship reflects some real life problematic behavior that we should talk about. But the problem wasn't him being fictitiously immortal. It was how he treated her.

Afterlife therapy can't fix everything: The very rough title for an OC centric fic, focusing on Urusalirë with their family after she's reembodied from going off to fight and dying in the War of Wrath. Fun highlights include: backstory trauma because their family who's deaths she feels responsible for weren't in Mandos, Nerdanel with a little Trauma By Proxy because almost everyone she cares for has died horribly in Beleriand, Mahtan trying to keep his family together while ignoring the bitter and hurt parts of himself to help his partner, and of course my headcanons on Mandos and reembodiment.

He deliberately holds himself back from touching her- something she is pathetically grateful for but simultaneously infuriates her. They want to hold and be held by their friend and partner and husband and they couldn’t in death and now they can’t in life because they tried and they had, for hours they had held their partner and their daughter as closely and tightly as any of them could bear, but even the thought of someone touching their skin now pins their ears back and makes them want to cry.

Golden Cages: Magic puberty with parents who are fundamentally, cosmically incapable of understanding you and a sibling who is both a lifeline and a threat is a great time! It's basically me working through Luthien's relationships with her parents and with her childhood while forced into a place and form that she can't fit out of love. Also an excuse for lots of purple-prose magic description, which I'm always a fan of. I'm not terribly happy with the bones of it anymore, and it's hard to reconcile normal mental reactions with Eldritchly-Inhuman Maia instincts without leaning too hard one way or another and feeling wrong, but I still love some parts and the premise so it will probably end up reworked in the future.

When she finally stopped Singing (she didn’t run out of air) she had wings large enough to half-span the throne room, and skin that glinted like metal and iridized like the inside of a shell, and eyes brighter than the forest-frozen stars, and hair that spiraled like clouds (like her mother’s) and, and, and. She didn’t speak for a month, until it all (mostly) went away, leaving her stretched and straining at her body’s seams with the knowledge of her new potential. The forest's bird-song didn’t come back for another week.

Unreturned: An AU where Luthien is able to return to life as a mortal(ish) because of her nature, but Beren can't because of his. She agrees to go back and live her life for as long as she can bear (very reluctantly, in no small part because in this AU she's already pregnant), and resolves that since she doesn't have Beren to settle down with, she is going to fuck shit up and leave as terrifyingly awesome a legacy as she can. Beren is her impulse control. Would love to do more with this but it's 90% undefined break-it-less vibes in my head which with the Silm means so much planning to get pieces to fall into place without making things worse. I do know that the major canon divergence would only start after the Nirnaeth was lost. Also featuring Maedhros and Luthien becoming really weird, terrifying, and vaguely codependent besties (a relationship I care so much about with less than 0 basis), and Daeron trying to coparent Dior while keeping his sister even halfway sane (paralleling Maglor with Maedhros- and possibly Gil-Galad?)

Luthien begs. She pours her heart and soul out into her Song, all her rage and grief at the unjustice of the world. Namo, the great judge, grim and unrelenting and always, always just, he cries. He sits, silently listening to her, as tears drip down his stony face. He is not unmoved. But there are laws greater than he to be upheld, and mortals do not return from death. Elves do. And Maiar do not die.

So Paizo just introduced a new ruling for Pathfinder 2e that allows players to effectively completely decouple stat bonuses from ancestries, letting players do whatever. Personally I think this is a great change for a variety of reasons, but this has brought up an argument that doesn’t sit right with me. Never has.

In short, it’s the argument of “stop bringing real world politics into my games!”

I understand where this is coming from, the world is a scary place sometimes and it’s nice to have a space to escape it all entirely. Though unfortunately this argument is often used by those who simply aren’t the greatest kind of people, and often have some level of bigotry or general bias against certain groups of people. But I’m not here to talk about that, not now at least.

No, what I want to talk about is the idea that media just simply should not have any form of politics in it what-so-ever. Now ignoring the fact that this stifles out so much potential for storytelling for a moment, you cannot have media without politics. Well, you can, but you’re probably playing Solitaire. And I’m sure there’s some cultural context there that I’m unaware of that someone could bring up and prove me wrong on that front. 

See, the thing is: art and media are made by people. People have political views on things. People will often put those views into their work, most often subconsciously without fully realising, but also sometimes very much intentionally. People tend to create (and go to) media that aligns with their own ideologies. You’re not going to find someone that’s gay producing media that puts something like conversion therapy in a positive light for example. The thing is, media never became political, nor did it ever stop being political. People just don’t want politics that don’t align with their own politics being involved.

To rattle off a few examples (and probably preach to the choir a little)

Lancer, an RPG that heavily condemns capitalism, the concept of “infinite growth,” war, etc. But also heavily promotes full autonomy of your body, being allowed to do whatever you’d like with it. Including becoming a catgirl. This is canon.

Cyberpunk, both the genre and the Mike Pondsmith setting. I shouldn’t even have to elaborate on this, but it’s absolutely an indictment on capitalism and rampant consumerism, as well as being a warning as to what happens when corporations and the rich get too much power. Not to mention topics of transhumanism and the sense of self.

Star Trek, again I should not have to elaborate on this one. From the very beginning it’s been absolutely filled to the brim with politics covering so many different topics.

His Dark Materials, absolutely contains commentary against organised religion.

Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Rising, hell the former is all about espionage for fuck’s sake, and the latter has the main antagonist being a US senator who wants to Make America Great Again through war profiteering, and is again absolutely a statement on the military industrial complex.

Dungeons & Dragons, has one hell of a loaded political history if you look into it (satanic panic, anyone?) to say nothing of more recent controversies.

Fallout, do people really think the saying “War. War never changes.” is just there to sound cool? Seriously, not even going to question the world coming to an end through nuclear war? No?

Baldur’s Gate 3, has a whole thing involving an encampment of druids and tiefling refugees seeking asylum. 

Divinity: Original Sin 2, once again going against organised religion.

The Witcher, I should really only need to bring up the elves to make my point here, but there’s a lot more than just that.

I’m going to stop there for the safety of my own sanity, but hopefully you get the idea. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but even just this small list spans roughly 60 years, I probably could go a lot further back if I took the effort to do so. Media didn’t suddenly start becoming political, and media won’t stop being political. Because all media is political. To truly think that should not be the case, is to say we should not have art.

Also I know I'm heading to bed but in regards to the tags under my last Peyton drawing but I have like. So Many fantasy race anatomy headcanons that I wish I had the energy to talk about tonight (it'll just have to wait until like, tomorrow or the next day if I don't forget) but seriously. Oh damn, I really really REALLY want to!

HOWEVER. It’s time to come clean, guys. 

While I read through I think what is the chapter after Nasuada and Co pretty much tell Orrin ‘yeah no bend a fuckin’ knee, Nasuada will be queen’ and the chapter where Eragon and Saphira meet Arya and Firnen, as well as the final chapter of course, I have...refused...to read the rest of Inheritance beyond those parts after Galbatorix is defeated, at least until we get actual content with most of our mains in another book. 

It’s stupid, I know. But I can’t let IC be over for me. Partly because it’s been such a big part of my life (I even have the yawë and the word edoc’sil tattooed on my leg), and also because...okay I’mma be honest, once you hit like...it’s certainly post-Dras Leona, but a lot of Inheritance sorta rubbed me the wrong way. It felt, and please don’t hate me for this as I’m just an amatuer fanfiction writer doing this for my own enjoyment, well, poorly written and poorly planned. A lot of it felt like it made no sense to me (and after discussing it with people who have finished the book as a whole it’s been confirmed that even with the rest some chunks just don’t seem like they were plot worthy if that’s a way to put it) and it just felt...I can’t describe it but while I enjoy the series, I also feel like I have to reject certain parts. 

I rambled a bit, let me get back on topic. To explain in short, I have no idea how Firnen acts in canon, and (more on the nose with MIC) I have no idea how he would affect Arya concerning her PTSD. Building his character from what is essentially scratch, without him becoming a therapy dragon that just consoles Arya through PTSD attacks or is a massive cuddle buddy prop tool, is difficult to the extreme for me. I don’t want him to be styrofoam, ya know? And I feel like I can’t write him until I have a better feel for how he is. Movements, tics, thoughts, feelings, view of the world, how he grows, etc. There’s a lot of me ‘feeling’ when I write MIC, and when I don’t feel a character it comes out as stilted, cardboard or...white bread. 

I have some ideas, but none that make me want to smash keyboard for untold hours while wordweaving and researching. Though I might try and whip something up, just for you Anon :3 See, if y’all ask things you may receive. I don’t write without insp, and it’s not like my life is anything to draw or ignite insp from at the moment lmao.

It’s not just Firnen that I struggle with writing in MIC. Nearly anything post-Eldest is hard. I prefered the traveling and more...I guess open-spaces, unstructured parts that Eragon and Eldest had. Once you hit Brisingr, there’s this undercurrent of how short the time the series covers is, and the restriction to mostly Eragon’s PoV (look I love Roran and Nasuada but I do not write them well and there are some people around who may get offended if I can’t solidify and write their MIC versions in a proper manner) make it hard! Not to mention that the changes in characters and plot in MIC (Brom, Glenwing surviving, timeline extension, etc), and jfc now I have to deal with Eragon and Saphira being followed everywhere?!? by snooty aloof elves that would disapprove of MIC!Arya’s true personality and wildsoldierchild freedom while with the Vardon?!?? 

None of this is to say that you will never get Firnen or post-Eldest content. It’s more to explain why it’s sparse, and to also wiggle my eyebrows and say ‘hey now there’s a thought maybe I could weave some trauma into that, get the writing juices going that way....’ 

...also, damn it, I’m going to be drawing way way to much from TC-96′s Huey/Babytwo if we’re gonna have Arya call smol baby Firnen ‘Bean’ or ‘Greenbean’ because honestly, MIC Arya probably would. She’s pretty fond of nicknames.

My Reaction to “Avengers Endgame”

Yes- I still haven’t seen this movie.  Yes I know exactly what happens in this movie.  I mainly avoided it for a while due to overhype but with some convincing from my brother, Imma sit my butt down and try to watch this.

What if they pulled a reverse WandaVision and showed the people getting snapped out of existence in a future film or show?  That would be freaking terrifying.

They’re [Tony and Nebula] playing paper football...

I wanna see more of THEIR interactions aboard the Milano.  The shots of them just repairing the ship are great too.

I also like you see the visual difference between Tony and Nebula.  While he’s growing gaunt and haggard from loss of oxygen, you can still see that Nebula looks absolutely fine because she’s like 75% android

Well, since you asked... Honestly, you could've just said that you didn't like it when other people forced their portrayal or headcanons on other roleplayers, which is a totally acceptable boundary, and left it at that. You ran your mouth instead. "I have seen a lot of arguing about elves are jewish, elves are romani, elves and indigenous, etc and I guess some salt in that is the way that people get so hung up on trying to apply the real world into a fantasy setting." If you're not Jewish or Romani or an indigenous person, you don't get to say a g-ddamn word about how people reconcile canon with their characters and see themselves. "Racism is what you are more than how you look" is a great way to tell me that you don't have any Asian friends without telling people you don't have any Asian friends. My Asian friends have had people walk up to them on the street spitting gibberish and racial slurs or making fun of their eyes. They don't like it anymore than you asking them where they're really from. If you need a whiter example, the amount of times that people told me that all Jews had brown hair and brown eyes that correlated directly with racist shit they'd said or did was above zero. "While there is some stuff like sexism, homophobia, etc in thedas it doesn’t really happen in the way that I often see people trying to force" makes me honestly question if we played the same game. The game where the first noble you see at the Winter Palace calls you a racial slur if you're not human? The game where Dorian's father used blood magic as conversion therapy? The writers chose to put these in the game for a reason and it wasn't because they wanted us to shy away from confronting those issues. director’s cut, director’s choice of ⭐️Dear Fen’Harel⭐️? (Though generally speaking, I’m intensely curious as to how you develop characters because everyone you write is so brilliantly layered)

So um, this exploded. And I apologize. I am very much a character-driven writer versus a plot-driver writer. Also, how I develop characters is not a process I think about, it just happens, so this is also me finding out for myself how my own brain works, haha. If you want the full fucking three page essay this turned into, there’s more under the cut.

If not, and I don’t blame you, TLDR: I break a canon character down to their parts based on what I see in-game, I look at how their personal quest affects them, and I try to find a modern day equivalent to that. Each character has an issue they need to get past and I create situations to challenge those issues. And Ellana was created to be a foil for Solas and I dumped all my negative traits into her because neither she nor I can afford therapy so this is our best bet.

First of all, developing characters in fanfic is different than OC characters because I have a pre-set personality to work with rather than making someone from scratch. So for this, Ellana’s development is different from the rest of the cast.

For fanfic characters, obviously I look at the source material and see how they’ve reacted to certain situations and what they have canonically expressed about themselves in both deed and word. Honestly, I pay more attention to what they have DONE versus what they have SAID because a lot of characters tend to fool themselves into thinking they’re one way when they’re not (here’s looking at you, Solas).

Because DF is a modern AU, I take what I have seen in Canon (which is a lot because Bioware is very good at giving so much material to work with having all those different dialogue trees) and I apply it to the Modern Day. Some characters fit very easily – Dorian was made for Academia. Krem seems a more modern character anyway with how he constantly roasts Iron Bull. Josephine’s prowess in DA:I translates very easily to political science. Varric kind of has a modern writer’s career anyway.

Some are not easy – Solas is actually super hard for me to write in DF than he is in Thick as Thieves because so much of his characterization, his world views, his prejudices, are rooted in the fact that he is an ancient being out of time – which is impossible to have in this AU. I have crafted a sort of back story for him that might explain some things later, but it’s flimsy at best, haha.

So I’ve had to really look at what Solas is like in Inquisition when he’s pretending to be a “normal” hedge mage hermit from nowhere and how he behaves in his romance and extract from that. Solas is a nerd, he’s socially awkward from self-imposed isolation, he constantly struggles with what he wants and what is the morally correct thing to do and the temptation to be loved usually wins out over his convictions until the last second when he gets his common sense back and ruins everything.

It helps that in both DA and DF Solas is keeping a massive, massive secret from the Inquisitor about his identity that will shift the power balance between the two, so I’ve used that to guide me when I’m unsure. He still feels off to me, but it’s whatever at this point, lol. I did my best.

Once I’ve boiled a character down to their usual traits, I figure out how I’m going to have them grow throughout the fic and use their growth to help Ellana’s growth. I try to pull from their personal quests as much as I can, when I can get it to fit.

Some people, like Iron Bull, are static because they’ve already gone through their journey and have reached acceptance. I didn’t really know how to work his Leaving the Qun story line in the modern day, since it is tied so closely with war and potentially killing the Chargers, so by the time Ellana meets him, he has already left the Qun and made his peace with it. I use his static nature to help guide Ellana when she’s conflicted about her identity.

Some people, like Josephine, have personal quests that don’t fit with a modern era but I want to show them grow anyway, so I create something else for them. Right now, Josephine is mired in family drama and trying to figure out how to balance shouldering the weight of her responsibilities to her family with being her own person. That I drew from my own personal experience with being the only sane person in my family with their shit together, haha.

Or Cassandra, who is definitely NOT going to be Divine here, lol. So instead she gets to struggle with her art and how she can express herself in a way that leaves her vulnerable to scrutiny and yet can be so freeing.

Some people, like Krem, get a character arc that I think should have been explored but never was. Krem being trans is something that’s mentioned and talked about a little and never explored. I mean, he’s not a main character, so I get it. And I liked that Being Trans wasn’t his entire character. But there was no way to put him in the modern AU without his trans identity impacting some of his story and growth, even if he had already made his peace with it.

Now, I will say this upfront: I am not trans, and I haven’t had the opportunity to be close friends with a trans person, but I have done a lot of research on what trans people have said about their own experiences, and combined this with other research I’ve done over the years with other minorities and tried to put together what could be lingering insecurities for him and how he could overcome them.

I’m  definitely not saying that I’ve done this perfectly and I’m always open to any trans reader who would give me correction, but being trans was not an aspect of Krem’s character that I wanted to ignore just because I wasn’t familiar with it.

I will say that his romance with Josephine was Not Planned. It just kinda happened and I happily ran with it, haha.

Varric’s arc with Bianca is just wishful thinking because I hate her so so much and Bioware just dropped that bomb in Varric’s lap and then just lets him keep holding on to it and it’s bullshit.

The other character journeys are just ways to explore vulnerability in them that I didn’t think got enough attention in the game or I think they could realistically have even if it wasn’t in canon. Like Dorian dealing with his father. Now, in the game, Halward doesn’t have a disease and he dies unexpectedly. But I wanted Dorian to have a realistic reason why he would reach other to his estranged father in this AU and a ticking countdown to an inevitable death seemed right.

Now we get to see Dorian really struggle with this new-found connection with his father that he always wanted to have and now it’s temporary and heartbreak is inevitable and is it still worth it to him? I think Dorian has similar feelings in Trespasser when he found out his father was murdered because he still invested himself to rebuild a lost connection, only to lose it so soon after.

Zevran’s past with the Crows is also something that I really wanted to explore because in the game he is sad for a hot second and then moves on with the Warden and his newfound goal of destroying the entire Crow organization. So I wanted to see Zevran struggle with his inner worth, the fact that he can’t hide forever and his past puts his loved ones in danger, the fact that he can even HAVE loved ones and how it scares the shit out of him.  I wanted to have a character who puts on such a good front about not giving a shit about anything to hide how very deeply afraid he is. We are going to see more of this also before the story is over, lol.

Now, Ellana. Like all original characters, Ellana has a lot my personal experiences tied in her. But I originally created Ellana to fill a need for a type of character that I wanted to see with Solas and don’t really get to. I mean, I have not scourged the corners of the internet to find it so I’m sure there are other characters like her, but I haven’t found very many.

I see a lot of very beautiful, very delicate and feminine, very kind and gentle Disney Princess kind of Lavellans. I see a LOT of them. And I don’t hate that necessarily. I mean, Josephine is all of those things and more and I adore her and I sort of crack ship her with Solas anyway, in the secret recesses of my heart. And I love seeing a female character who is the epitome of a “weak” female use those “weak” traits to succeed.

But I am also not very beautiful, I am NOT delicate at all, I’m not gentle. I am not anywhere close to a Disney Princess or a Josephine. And it was disheartening to see Solas romance all these Ocs that were nothing like me after a while because it kind of gave me the message that someone like Solas, a character that I admire and def have a fictional crush on, would never want someone who looks like me or acts like me. That even with unlimited freedom in creating a romantic counterpart for him, I saw so much of what society already reinforces as an ideal that I will never match up to. It doesn’t help that Bioware’s body diversity for elves ranges is nonexistent.

So I made Ellana for me. Not because I want to hate on other Ocs or prove that mine is superior, but so that I would have something that I connected to. And I wanted to explore a dynamic with Solas that I didn’t get to see very often.

So when I first imagined Ellana, I wanted her to be strong and tall and muscular and powerful in a way that makes a lot of unenlightened men uncomfortable. I wanted somebody used to manual labor and dirt and the outdoors and solving problems with their fists and just totally unrefined because I wanted her to be the complete opposite of Solas. (So like Cassandra but in elf form, haha).

I did not want her to be soft or conventionally attractive at all. Ellana doesn’t shun femininity, because I don’t think femininity is inherently wrong, but she is uncomfortable with it and she doesn’t indulge in it.

(Just FYI I am NOT built like Ellana at all either, haha. This is the wish fulfillment part of the OC. I greatly resemble the dwarves, which is why I love them so much.)

But I also needed her to have a reason to leave home, and to have some points of commonality with Solas, so I made her a nerd. A jocky nerd who is insatiably curious and stubbornly independent. And then because I wanted Ellana to feel like a real person instead just a wish fulfillment fantasy, I needed her to grow. So I gave her all my complicated anger issues, my bluntness, my struggles with homesickness, the way I compartmentalize negative events in my life so I don’t have to deal with them just so they can bite me in the ass later, my experiences of going from a lifestyle where all my needs were met and I was oblivious to how great I had it to living with serious poverty for the first time.

And then I devised situations with her life and the other characters where Ellana has to confront these issues and learn to accept them and either move past them or learn to control them. Sometime she gains wisdom and imparts it to people like Sera or Dorian when their struggles come up. And her biggest challenge has yet to arrive, so she’s still cooking, so to speak. Ellana still has a long way to go before she really reaches maturity.

As far as her relationship with Solas goes, I wanted her to challenge him and give him a total upheaval everything he thought he knew about his own culture and his own self. And I wanted him to do the same for her. And then when all the pieces are done falling, they have grown into two people who can handle being together.

So that’s basically it. If there is any character in particular you want to know more about or why I made certain decisions, always feel free to ask!

Hi! I have two questions for you and it would be awesome if you could answer them! 1. If you could change anything about the pre existing Kotlc books what would you change? E.g. Alvar is not evil, Dex dies, Sophie and silvery never meet, etc.. 2. If you could write the next Kotlc book what would the plot be? What would happen? (The answer can be as short or long as you want, a sentence, paragraphs, bullet points or other! Have fun!

Oh boy of course I’d love to answer these, anon! 

1. This one is pretty tricky...I feel like everything would be less straight, mainly, but if I had to chose just one thing it would either be making Sophie canon bi or giving Fitz a better character arc.

2. OK SO 

I think I’m going to do bullet points because I like bullet points. Fair warning I am very sleep-deprived and not entirely coherent. I will type up a better version of this tomorrow but here:

- Sophie and Oralie find out what’s in the cache- which turns out to be Very Helpful and clues them into how the Neverseen were able to use that fancy stone to change Keefe.

- Keefe wakes up and manifests as an inflictor (which is my headcanon for his ability)

- Keefe starts training with Bronte (which is less of a trainwreck than one would expect, but still a little bit of a trainwreck. It basically ends up beingKeefe, t-posing in the doorway: hello parental figureBronte, not looking up from his coffee: good morning problem child.)

- Lady Gisela tries to check on how Keefe is doing with his new ability, but she’s careless and they’re able to capture her. 

- They try to extract information from Gisela, but she refuses to tell them much.

- Fitz gives Sophie another apology and starts to grow more as a character because my boi deserved better.

- Sophie never finds out who her bio dad is because I have no idea.

- Ultimately they form a plan of some kind to trap Vespera (potentially using Amy as the bait or something of the sort), which succeeds. At some point during the battle Sophie enhances both Keefe and Bronte and the three of them take down a lot of the Neverseen as an inflictor trio of terror because they deserve it.

- Oh and at some point Oralie gets to bitchslap Fintan because she deserves to slap him. This isn’t relevant to the main plotline but it’s included because it would be awesome. 

- Because of Sophie and Oralie’s actions in opening her cache saving a bunch of people, the Council decide to open some more of the caches. They find out a shitton of stuff that’s really important and while they are risking their sanity, it turns out to be worth it.

Anyways that’s where the main story ends I think but if I were to do an epilogue:

- The Black Swan’s plan for how to handle humans turns out to be ‘make humans one of the intelligent species again’

- The Council comes clean about a bunch of stuff and then decides to contact the humans. (With some forceful convincing by Sophie)

- also they un-ban pyrokinesis, also with convincing by Sophie, surprisingly supported by Bronte. (Because his brother and/or best friend, depending on whether Pyren bros is canon in this, went insane because he couldn’t use his power, also based on Bronte’s past decisions in not supporting the ability restrictor it seems like something he’d support.)

- Elves make contact with humans, which is surprisingly not a shitshow. Or at least less of a shitshow than one would expect.

- The humans end up an intelligent species again and a lot of disaster is averted.

- Sophie never does end up registering for matchmaking but that’s okay, she gets to marry whoever the fuck she wants anyways because Fitz and Keefe don’t care (and Sokeefitz is canon in this ofc).

- everyone gets therapy because they need it

AND THEY ALL LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND NO ONE DIES BECAUSE I’M SOFT OKAY
