STAR TREK UPDATE TIME quick fast. last night we watched tng's "gambit part ii" and ds9's "cardassians"

gambit part ii (tng):

well, this continued to be underwhelming and frustrating for reasons outlined in my previous post

i will cop to maybe not following the plot as closely as i could have been but i thought the artifact turning out to be a weapon was fucking stupid, especially considering it was a Mind Weapon. girl what on earth. we didn't even get to visit vulcan properly

i DID however call that vulcan racefaking as romulan which i was quite thrilled about

vulcan race purity extremists right as we're having bajoran race purity extremists in ds9...girl what is in the water out there. everybody calm down. globalization (galaxization?) is not the end of the world

i did perk up a little when riker was forced to play his literal charade with other people, such as worf and beverly, but it was so brief as to be nearly insulting

this is the only time i think i have not sided with data in an argument...i don't think there was any reason to take poor worf to the woodshed like that :( i'm glad they're still friends though

cardassians (ds9):

oh i had STARS in my eyes this entire episode. i have been COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS until we see garak again and he did NOT disappoint

from what i saw of gifs i never expected his and julian's relationship to be like this...i expected julian to be mister stammery and for garak to enjoy making him squirm. which would have been great and i would not object to it in future content but what we got was a welcome surprise in that it was way more complex!!

like, julian as the garak whisperer...sisko didn't summon garak to his office directly he told julian to have garak there at a certain time. "he never tells me what he's actually thinking i just sort of deduce it"etcetc. i also like julian instinctively knowing when to let garak come to him and when to be firm with him ie stop the whole fucking shuttlecraft until his ass gets some real answers. we havent seen much of his bedside manner yet so to speak but he actually CAN be good with people! or maybe just good with garak

i can't wait to find out more about garak. the worst part of a garak episode is knowing now you have to wait a long time until the next garak episode. i love that he deliberately keeps us out of the loop even though i am DYING to know everything about him. you get the idea that he's really been through something

side bar how and why is he able to get into julians room in the middle of the night???? did julian give him the door code jic 👀other side bar i love this mans little silk pajamas. actually everybodys pj game was on point

cardassian war orphans FUCKED UP. no one is coming to take them back to cardassia, except the one who doesn't want to go. i am SO relieved they didn't pull a tng here by the way. going in i was almost sure they wouldn't but still

bonus points for obrien being fantasy racist in front of his japanese wife. she used her teacher voice to set him straight and not another word of that came out of his mouth for the entire episode. one that man knows about happy wife happy life. two it's a good callback to him also having a card in the cardassian-hating game. pretty sure we said "that was a very ugly thing you just said i dont need to hear it twice" about 1000 times to each other during the rest of the episode

my only gripe with this episode is that i would have liked to hear where kira comes down on this...this episode was very full and not really About her, but the absence of her felt very weird, especially when most of the cardassian stuff involves her so heavily. you can sort of guess where she'd stand ("if they don't like the way we parent they shouldn't have left them here and also we're being way nicer to them than they ever were to bajoran children") but i'd still like to hear it FROM HER. a shame we just didn't seem to have room

of course, i cannot possibly end this post without a shoutout to my very best friend sisko. my favorite sisko moment in this episode was his increasing incredulity when bashir interrupted his MEETING WITH A CARDASSIAN POLITICIAN to interrogate him without warning and then said "it was the highlight of my day. don't do it again." and then bashir did it again. my second favorite part was when bashir woke him up at fuck o clock and said he needed a runabout and sisko was like girl why and julian was like im sorry i have no idea and sisko was like well by all means. will one runabout do. like. he's so wry and sarcastic and at the same time so chill with breaking the rules when it matters - he trusts julian enough to know he wouldn't ask for a shuttle without a good reason and julian trusts him enough not to get mad at the request even when it comes at fuck o clock in the morning. like, he's so GOOD with his people and they respect him so much. im anxiously waiting for more sisko-centric content almost as much as i am for more garak content!!!

my buddy convinced me to make an animal jam play wild account since it actually still gets proper updates and so far my feelings have been. mixed. overall i havent done nearly as much as anyone else bc my account has existed for maybeee 2 or 3 hours? so this is just my first impressions. im also kinda biased bc ive been playing animal jam classic for years and years and YEARS. back when 9 + 10 = 21 was still unironically funny and every cool kid in class read warriors. might update this post with extra thoughts as i go along! all opinions below the cut bc this is an absurdly long post

ive only played a few levels of overflow (and it might be because i played on expert because i Definitely have no overbearing hubris casting a shadow upon my better judgement) but the gem payout being higher than AJC for each level you complete is a very welcome change (2 gems times X number, seemingly determined by how long your path is, vs AJPWs i think it was like 5 gems times X number determined by how long your path is? either that or like 10. idk i blew a whole half hour on overflow alone and it was almost 6 AM by the time i finished so my brains kinda muddled)

also, membership has become far less of an overbearing nightmare monster for AJPW in comparison to AJC! thats a good thing! personally i think that membership just Shouldn't but thats because i think any monetarily-accessed subscription anythings just Shouldn't especially in this day and age. i got to go to the clothing store and buy things i liked and i didnt just have to longingly stare at the paywalled options like a maiden gazing out to sea and it felt great

dont like how theres so many fewer options for shopping for Like Everything but its a far more ambitious game than AJC what with everything being 3d modeled, and its got a younger target demo and theyre usually happy with whatever looks cool, so it checks out. haha. funny pun that was intended definitely. whats there is also pretty great and the den item options you get started off with are both way more cool and way more More than classic in its hayday. idk about the ajc starting den items now though i dug my old account from the ashes of who i once was when i decided to pick classic up again. i dont actually remember if you start with any den items in ajc now that i think about it i might be misremembering. that still means play wild has that point against classic though. shame theres no water animals but they could maybe possibly be added in an update pretty please wildworks if by some miracle youre reading this i am begging and pleadi

really my main issue so far is with how many things cost real-world money. theres next to nothing that requires a membership to even be bought aside from one members-only map location my buddy warned me about beforehand -- which, as a reluctant f2p since literally like 5th grade, ive been playing this game for Far too long, i do genuinely appreciate -- but boy oh boy you can sure tell this was mainly developed as a mobile game. there is so much pay-real-money-for-trinkets stuff and you just Cannot disable that menu. at least let me get rid of the little button that tells me i can spend the hard-earned bucks on moms credit card to get 1/4th the amount of animals of AJC man thats all i ask of this part

also this is largely unrelated but can i just say i DESPISE how many things are like "hi heres a welcome bonus :) oh but you need to pay like 3 bucks for it. yeah its usually 5 but for a Special New Player Like You? its a steal!" like thats not a welcome bonus thats an entry fee. i know thats like a paltry amount of money compared to most things Just Ever but its also coming from a guy whos family usually has zero money to spare

Hooo wheee! Life has been a little busy huh. Finally going to work again even if it is pretty much part time, other hobbies im keeping up with, trying to keep up on life admin and its going almost well! Shame im realizing i havent worked on my drawings in well over a month now 😅

Part of me is slightly dreading going back to them rn bc ive spent hours and hours on them already and they still need many hours before i post them....

You know that one guy on like tiktok/youtube shorts whos a really friendly old artist with a hobbit hole studio and does like 1hr paintings that look incredible? Obviously i dont expect myself being rusty and also not with years and years of experience to do the same but wouldn't that be the dream? To be able to just create and be done and happy with it in just an hour or a few and move on. How sad it is how many things i have started and not finished, outting in hours and hours where it doesnt really make even a super significant difference.

Also its that dinluke positivity week thing (god i hope this doesnt show up in the tag lmao sorry) i was really hyped months ago thinking its great prompts and great time to partake in my favourite fandom especially before february 2023 inevitably changes the scene in some way! But all of a sudden mid november is here and thats kinda terrifying! I have no clear idea for any of them, nothing im like desperate to draw and my current drawing doesnt really fit them either. Im thinking maybe i should try like, giving myself idk 2 hrs max to just make something beginning to end and if i hate it its ok i dont have to post it. But maybe i will and it could be fun! Sure i am too tired to properly do anything but idk, even making one post could give me excitement and hype for things i used to enjoy and something that isnt just real life and like job related.

To be fair i could also go for the much more guaranteed dopamine boost and play a video game ive been thinking of playing again for months. Sure i dunno which to choose and im not like super inclined to anything even tho i would like to play multiple of them again, just playing alone is a little boring i guess.

The more i spend just overthinking the quicker my sunday will be over and ill have to do next week and god knows ill be busy!! I should try drawing bc its there floating in my mind and could be easier to slip in into the day routine to do a little here and there rather than like, playing skyrim for 30 mins loll. Or oblivion bc for some reason ive been missing it. Or battlefront, even tho that is really hard to play without really trying my hardest and getting readjusted to the pace of it

I've had big Fairune brain the past few days because I've been needing to finish the collection and I finally did. I found out there's a new one coming out this year and got excited until i saw it looks more like their games they made after Fairune which does not spark joy. I rememered having seen their game Kamiko on sale forever ago and liking the title screen art and then immediately nope'ing out when I saw what the game looked like. The old artist must've left or taken a dark path at some point because the Fairune 1 and 2 art is really really good, but then for Kamiko, Transiruby, and their slow life RPG thing I cant remember the name of, they switched to this generic early kickstarter era indie pixel art thing where the sprites legs are one pixel wide and they dont have enough frames of animation for how detailed they are and its just not great. Regardless, Kamiko is on sale on switch for $1.99 right now and I had 192 gold coins, so I bought it for 7 cents. I havent played much but uh, I wish that new Fairune was like the old ones lets just say that

I'm beginning to absolutely fucking love the PC88. The games EGG Console put out are all so fucked and jank but they arent unfun to play like bad NES or Genesis games. Silpheed is legitimately good, I'm talking more about Hydlide and Relics. I mention this because what made me play Fairune was that Hydlide wasnt on the switch lol. But I also just watched a video on Xanadu and like man. Like I dont think games should be that anti-player but literally zero games are released today that have that energy. Like imagine if the Marvelous guys were still making games like Chulip and Moon. Where theyre unbelievably charming and deep but they also fucking hate you and if you dont know all the enemies despawn if you kill them 3 times the game becomes incompletable. I guess Dark Souls 2 was like that

Anyways its my partners birthday tomorrow (cuz I havent slept yet tomorrow means friday) and were going to da zoo baybee, during a massive covid surge baybee, with non refundable tickets and N95s in our hands baybeeee. The event were going to starts late tho so I'll be fine on sleep. Lately I've been being a better employee and getting into work earlier, and actually doing my job for 7 hours than leaving and going to bed by 3am at the latest. Thats why most of my posts have been baffling or short, this shit sucks man. No time for Barony hat update. it’s well done and most textures are fucking flawlessly lit

 my only issue is there are things that don’t come back that feel like they maybe should??? 

like, i was dicking around in front of the garage door before i went in on like my 3rd replay, trying to find things to look at that i missed the first few times, and then something clattered inside the garage and edith said “i heard something moving around inside the garage” 

and like. holy shit?? holy shit. when i went in to look around there was nothing that had fallen over and nobody inside so uhhhh?? 

i Get that it’s a clever thing to make you go inside the garage. 

i know.

anyway wonderful game and its p short so aspiring streamers, this one is for you! its abt an hour nd a half/two hours worth of gameplay

this game is one of my favorites of all time 

the characters are likable, the dialogue’s funny, the art style is SO damn cute, it has all these fun minigames,  openly queer characters, catchy songs, a bit that might give you an extistential crisis, the works!! 

it’s a really good game, my issue is there’s really no way to get everything. 

you will Always miss something 

the gameplay took me 12 hours to complete and i had watched playthroughs before so it’s a LONG game

but this is so high on the reccommended list

- Knights and Bikes (completed)

this game is hella cute and it’s good to play with a friend! i played it once on my own and i’m currently playing it again with my sibling.

an issue with the multiplayer function is that it doesn’t splitscreen, once my sibling got stuck and we couldn’t progress onwards because the game wouldn’t let me walk too far away from her. makes sense i guess

the storyline is so cute and it reminds me of night in the woods(see above) someone in the comments of this post recommended it to me so💜💜💜 thank you.

all the game mechanics and race minigames are so good 10/10.

the artstyle? WONDERFUL. melza and nessie have the cutest little faces. i have a older sibling problem so they are now my younger siblings. i have adopted them.

captain honkers is my siblings favorite and she insists on stopping whatever plot is going on in order to feed and pet the goose.

nessie and melza are written like real kids and i applaud the devs and writers for that.

TWS: money issues, possession, ghosts, cuts and bruises that are kinda graphic but not that bad

look at this book i found!! it’s got cute art and everything!!! it’s a retelling of the story which i understand is not some people’s thing but honestly it’s great so far!

- Slime Rancher (story complete)

literally whoever developed this game went “so how cute can i make this” and then absolutely SMASHED that limit

 i havent even finished the game yet but it’s adorable

 my problem is how EASY it is to fall into the ocean and how confusing the map is

 i keep getting lost so i wish i could put like,,,markers on the map?? or have the map tell me what slimes are in what region?? 

idk maybe i’m just dumb but i am very lost all of the time while playing this game 

also the soundtrack is impeccable and it’s a very good game for chill streams

hey hi update i’ve finished the story part of the game. it ripped out my heart and stomped on it then wrapped it up in a pretty bow and gave it back to me. wtf.

TWs: there are monsters that try to eat you but you can opt out of having those spawn, flashing(dont stand too close to plort or food deposits if this is an issue for you! the little burst of light when you put something in tends to strobe!!!)

- Firewatch (complete)

this game is absolutely hilarious

and beautiful!! its not necessarily realistic but everything has a style to it that makes my little gamer heart happy. i set a screenshot i took as my pc background and it looks very pretty

the music also really makes the game. it hardly ever shows up but when it does you notice!

everything is voice acted by the way, which sets up the game very well! i never once felt like they were reading from a script, and it made me laugh a ton, even when i was pretty scared.

this is kind of an extension to the TW list but if you struggle with paranoia and feelings of being watched, don’t play this game!! it relies very heavily on that mechanic to make you scared, which is good for horror but bad for people who deal with that every day of their lives. please be careful!

TWs: dementia, paranoia, death, animal death, corpses, cheating on a spouse (if you choose the right dialogue), fires, (brief) abuse mention

storyline 1: i chose to like. not stay talking to emily? it ended at 2006 if that makes a difference. 

the entire game was just me going “so what is the most neurotypical answer i could give right now” 

i like movement games so the solely text based game was Not as fun for me. 

but whatever 

ill probably play again and find out why everyone Really likes this game so much

lots of little side quests to do so enjoy running around the open world doing whatever the hell you want

ok this was cute

my little sister begged me to get it so she could watch me play it, since the youtube videos she was watching weren’t getting uploaded to youtube kids fast enough.

very soothing, i put on a youtube playlist as i was unpacking this persons houses throughout their lifetime and it was calming but also very rattling especially the college chapter (since thats a thing for me soon at the time of writing this)

the ending couple chapters i was like trying to puzzle together if the persons lover was a girl or not and results inconclusive, could be a guy very comfortable in his masculinity

ok while checking some stuff for the tws i figured out that its a girl!! yay wlw lets go

TWs: theres a chapter, chapter 2010, that sorta seems like domestic violence? the infamous diploma-under-the-bed chapter, where you can’t put basically any of your stuff anywhere, and after this chapter, lots of the characters things are damaged or missing, as if there was a big fight. could be reading way too much into it tho

- Spiritfarer (incomplete)

this game. this game. ive seen Nobody talk about it but it’s so cute!! 

stella, the player character is ADORABLE, she’s so damn happy to be doing that job and hanging out with her friends! 

its so cute her animations are my favorite thing!! 

this game tackles grief and loss, mourning, death, and fear with stella and her cat, dandelion

its such a cute game and its based in greek mythology, you just get to steer a ship around and help out lost souls!! 

also an adorable game for chill streams

TWs: death, watching loved ones die (heavily implied stella took care of her best friend in her last moments), ghosts, jellyfish(this isnt a typical tw but they feature prominently as someone’s greatest fear in the game so), storms

the cutscenes are all done in this amazing puppetry style and aaaa!!!

if there is one game on this list i really want you to play, it’s raji.

it’s all about hindu mythology, it’s so so easy to follow along(even for me, who admittedly doesn’t know too much about most religions) and i adore it.

i have maybe an hour put into this game?? and there have been 3 drug jokes, 4 different swear words, a heavy implication that you are a slave for capitalistic labor, and something that i’m like 90% certain was a sex joke. 

so yeah

t’s a pretty game, but honestly it’s really just a horror game disguised as a survival game

the entire time i’m exploring i just keep singing “🎵i hate souuuuunddddsss, if i round this corner and hear a sound i will dieeeee, all sounds can shut up forever please and thank youuuuuu🎵” 

so if that doesnt give you an example of what my mental state is playing this game idk what will

i’ve watched a play through of this one already but shhhhhhh we don’t talk about that (also its not like i remember what happens anyway)

anyway i LOVE the art style.

it’s like a more simplistic version of night in the woods and y’all know that game is my Jam.

can you all tell gravity falls is my bread and butter because all my favorite games are about creepy towns and weird creatures

i’m not far into it and so far my only drawback is the clunky dialogue.

it just. it sounds Off. i don’t know how else to put it.

i like the radio function a whole lot though

plus the concept is sick as hell it’s literally the dialogue as the only thing holding this game back and not even by that much!!

i’m honestly not sure about this one. 

i’m notoriously bad at platforming games, plus i have no idea the story of hollow knight. 

ive played for about 5 hours and i have zero progress. 

this game is one that i would only reccommend to people who Know that they’re good at platformers and also are good at remembering where theyre going. 

i’m still playing this one and struggling

this game is goooood. 

it’s hard to do, but it’s a space exploration game and it’s Hella fun.

HEY WRITING ANON!! Good to hear from you darling and I’m glad you’re doing okay! Other than being busy with classes, I mean. Fic ideas you say... colour me curious!

For schedules, the best thing I think is to write ahead of time.

I always have my fics at LEAST half done before I start posting them so that I don’t have to take long pauses in between the updates.

For the day-to-day, I find having a goal helpful. Atm I have a goal of 1k a day just to keep the momentum up, even if some of it isn’t great and I rewrite or delete it later. Even if all you can get down is a few sentences, that’s still progress!

It doesn’t have to be word counts though. It could be starting or finishing a scene, getting to a certain moment, etc.

Writing on a schedule does take some discipline and of course no one is obligated to write but for me, personally, I like having a daily goal to reach. Some days I’m not particularly feeling it, so I take breaks. Some days I push through and it turns out well.

My outlines are alright I think! I’ve got the skeletons for three fics hashed out but I gotta build up all the arcs abd themes around the plot now so that’ll take a while. Thanks for asking!! It was nice to see ya again my dude feel free to drop in whenever MWAH

I’m here to prove that Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-man/peter parker in The Amazing Spider-Man is objectively the best love action adaptation of the character. In this essay I will....(yes this is really happening)

Edit: 10/20/20- i want to indulge myself in spiderman content but finding non mcu spiderman content is exhausting so imma update this instead

TL;DR

Andrew Garfield is my favorite of the 3 Spider-Man actors. TAS’s Peter is more fun and dynamic than the cookie cutter “shy introverted nerd that has a crush on a girl who’s way out of his league” Peter in Tobey Maguire’s movies. I enjoy Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character, but hate the way Disney has written the movies.  I enjoy the characters, plot, and humor of The Amazing Spider-Man far more than the other 2, and i deeply wish we had gotten the third movie with the canon BIder-Man of Andrew’s (and my) dreams.

Characterization

  Most arguments against Andrew Garfield’s Spidey( AG’s from now on) begin and ends with “he was a good Spider-Man but a bad Peter Parker”. This references an outdated post comparing all three Spidey actors.(Id attach the image here but i dont want the post to be too long(thats a lie this is so long what am i doing with my life)) The post also claims that Tobey played a good Peter and a poor Spidey; and that Tom is good at both “roles”.(Honestly I think it seems silly that this seems obey the “third time’s the charm” rule but thats just me).  Most people using this seem to be Tobey stans who have forgotten or ignored the rest of the post funnily enough, but the ones that go further into the WHY AG is a poor Peter are also incorrect. This argument also ignores the idea that there can be more than one version of Peter Parker which is blatantly incorrect.  Just look at Into the Spiderverse or the PS4 game; these provide 4(5 if you count the pig) versions of Peter themselves, and that doesnt even include the comics. 

 Arguments that go further in depth claim that the AS Peter is too cool or well liked by his peer to be a “true” Peter Parker. The evidence for this seems to be that Peter has a skateboard.(which what? didnt realize that having a skateboard would instantly make you cool brb guys). Adding to that i dont really see where people get the idea that Peter is popular or well liked. While looking for complaints i found this qutoe from reddit(theyve since deleted it looks like but i’ll add a link in the notes) “He's angsty, pretty socially awkward, has an aptitude for science, and is kind of an outsider. He gets bullied by Flash and he gets his ass kicked after trying to stand up to Flash. He isn't a "cool" person in any way (until the ending, in which he's best buds with Flash, so I'll give you that). While Maguire is more accurate to the 60s comics where Peter in high school is just a fucking loser with basically no friends, in the ultimate comics, Peter is more of the kid who has a small amount of friends, but isn't popular.”. Honesty i fully agree with this because once again, other versions of a character are allowed to exist. You can dislike one version, but its silly to dislike something for not being exactly like another thing.

Ive also heard that Peter isnt “nerdy enough” in this movie which really doesnt make any sense considering the entire plot happens because Peter was looking into some of his parents’ research. If he wasn't interested in looking further into his father’s work what reason would he have to go to Oscorp where he’s bitten by the spider? Why would he have become Dr. Conner’s assistant? If he wasn’t intelligent how did he develop the web shooters?(something that Tobey!Peter doesn't have to do out of plot convenience might i add).  

 Another complaint i see is that the quips he uses in the movie(the first one specifically it seems) makes him seem like an asshole. Honestly thats a fair complaint, but i think its a good bit of characterization; espcially if he does get better about it in the second movie like the internet suggests.The Peter in this movie is a rightfully angsty teen; of course he acts a bit of an ass to criminals(also i feel like its important to mention that he’s like that to criminals? its not like hes being a dick for no reason).

  Compare this with the Tobey Maguire(TM) movies. Like i said i haven’t seen these in awhile but as far as i’m aware TM’s Peter doesn't really do anything particularly nerdy in the film? I may have forgotten something( ok in the scene before he gets bitten he knows a cool spider fact) but he doesn’t have to invent the web-shooters because they came with his powers and he’s only at Oscorp in the first place because it’s a school field trip that he appears to be taking photos for. This Peter does fit the definition of outcast(friendless and bullied for it), but honestly i just dont like him. He’s weird and something about the character makes me feel like i should be a little grossed out every time he looks at MJ at the beginning of the movie.  

   I honestly don’t have any complaints for Tom Holland’s(TH’s)Spidey. Tom is a great actor and from what ive seen i enjoy his portrayal of the character.( He made me cry when i character i actively dislike died).  

Story

  I cant really say much for TAS story. It’s interesting but nothing special really. However, there is one scene that i don’t think i’ve seen anything like since( the closest would probably be the train scene in the original trilogy). 

 The crane scene. Early in the film Peter saves a boy from a car that has fallen off of a bridge, and at the end of the movie this becomes relevant again when it is uncertain that Peter will be able to get to the lizard to stop him in time.(as Peter is already injured and pretty far from the lizard’s location). The boy’s father is then revealed to be a construction worker who recognizes that Spider-man is going to need help to get to the lizard; he remembers how Spider-Man saved his son and organizes the rest of the construction workers to build a path out of crane arms for SM to swing from. All of them are putting themselves in danger by not evacuating, but SM’s actions in the first act of the film motivate them to do what’s right. 

  I love this scene primarily because it highlights something that i think is a really important part of Spider-Man’s character; his connection to the people he saves. SM is often shown interacting with and chatting with the people he has saved after the fact. One comic shows Peter accidentally scaring some bullies and then taking the time to ride the bus to school with them to continue their conversation and educate the students on bullying.( There’s definitely more but this is off the top of my head).

  Another scene in TAS that i love is shortly before the crane scene when Peter is originally attempting to make his way across the city to stop the lizard, and he is shot down by the police. They manage to unmask him before Peter comes to his senses( he had just been shot and fallen pretty far out of the sky in his defense). From there Peter is able to deal with the police while keeping any of them from getting a good look at his face. The one cop he cant take out happens to be Gwen Stacey’s father who had previously had an argument with Peter about Spider-Man(Peter obviously on SM’s side and Mr. Stacey against SM). Peter turns and allows Captain(?) Stacey to see his face. I believe that this is an example of an unwilling identity reveal done right. i really enjoyed this moment because Peter had just shown that he likely could have gotten out of this encounter with his identity in tact as he had just taken down however many men. This implies that it was an active choice on Peter’s end to trust that Captain Stacey would ultimately do the right thing and allow Peter to go fight the Lizard, rather than a final desperate attempt to get away unscathed. Whether or not this interpretation of the scene is correct or not it still gives the character a bit more agency than some versions have done with their identity reveals.

  In Spider-Man 2 Peter starts to lose his powers because he’s having internal conflict about wether or not he should be Spider-Man. Honestly thats kinda neat and i might want to give that a rewatch. As for the one i have seen i don’t have any complaints. I do however prefer the way that Peter was bitten in TAS because it was a result of him poking around where he shouldn’t’ve been rather than him just happening to be standing in the right place for a spider to land on him. 

  Onto TH’s movies; the way Disney has treated Spidey in the MCU is why TH’s is my least favorite version of the character. I feel like too much of the story revolves around Iron Man; Iron Man made Peter’s suit and equipment, Iron Man introduces Peter to the MCU(via blackmail but thats another rant for another annoyingly long post), its Iron Man that “makes” Spidey in this universe rather than Spidey being self-made. In Homecoming(which remember i havent seen outside of clips so bear with me) most of the conflict is cause directly or indirectly by Tony’s refusal or inabilty to communicate with the teenager he’s meant to be mentoring

 For one the entire incident with the ferry could have very easily been avoided had Tony bothered to communicate with Peter enough to tell him that the situation was being taken care of. On top of that at the moive’s climax Peter is shown trying to get in contact with Happy(from what ive picked up isnt he a chauffeur? like idk his deal i just know he’s someone Peter got pawned off onto after Civil War). Peter even goes as far as to somehow hack into Happy’s phone(i think thats what happened it was a weird tech thing that shouldve been a red flag that the call was important though) but instead of listening; Peter is ignored. If this was a different kind of movie Peter literally could have died and itd be the fault of Happy and Tony like..... A large portion of conflict comes from characters being incompetent and not communicating and thats just poor storytelling.

Before this turns too much into an anti mcu rant id also like to say that the way they did Civil War was really dumb considering that Peter defects to Cap’s side in the comics, but whatever.

 Also i loathe the way they handled the identity reveal at the end of Far From Home. With MCU movies most people know to expect an end credits scene by now, but typically that scene is not important to understand what’s happening in the films; they just aren’t important. Putting an identity reveal here makes it seem significantly less important than it is. On top of that i dislike their use of J Jonah Jameson for this scene.

  JJJ is a character who has been repeatedly shown to have a genuinely good heart. All of his anger comes from a place of love for his city(he even says this hemself in the ps4 game when May writes in to tell him that he needs help). He hates Spider-Man because SM reminds him of the masked man who killed his wife; JJJ has never been able to get past that( and Peter’s antagonism of him definitely doesnt help) However, JJJ has been shown to care for people; he has a son who he often brags about, and one comic shows that JJJ is paying Peter for “amateur” quality photos because he knows that Peter is having a hard time and “just need some help”. JJJ has even learned Peter’s identity before and kept his secret for him(seriously though i cant remember the name of the comic but its defiantly worth the read), and in the original trilogy when Goblin threatens JJJ he claims that he doesn’t know who sends in the photos of Spidey because he does it via email( this is a lie). The MCU will have a very difficult time convincing me that JJJ would ever out a teenager’s identity and put him in danger like that. It goes too far against his character.(this could be hypocritical of me to say considering how i just insisted that multiple versions of a character can exist but whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) 

This is accidentally turning into an MCU rant but id also like to say that i hate the lack of a TH!Spidey origin movie because it gives you no motivaion for Peter becoming SM or explanation of his powers; most people will know these things but if youre unfamiliar with the character its bound to be confusing(and im a sucker for origin movies)

My nose just started bleeding and I feel really upset about it. I dont know why but I feel really upset all of a sudden and it sucks because I was actually feeling better. Like today I was still mostly a mess. But I just got home from DnD and I had a really nice time with my friends. I hate that Im like this. I just want to feel better but no one seems to be able to make that better. 

I think I just want to sleep. I havent been sleeping good. Getting to sleep and winding down has been near impossible. Last night was another example. I get home around 11 and I am more awake then I have been all day. And I proceeded to be awake until past 2 am. In my studio. Organzing my makeup. Watching videos. Eventually I was able to calm down but it was rough. 

But all things considered I woke up okay. My alarm went off at 830 and I knew I wasnt going to get up for another hour but it was nice to kind of know that. Like then I got a deeper sleep in that hour because I knew it was safe to do that. If that makes sense. Nap space is safer to me then real sleep space. And when I got up at 930 I felt okay. 

I got a shower and got dressed. I love this outfit. And honestly I just love this sweatshirt Jess got me. It fits so nice and I really enjoy it. James made us breakfast. I ate half. I was already sort of feeling sour. I dont even know why. I just felt weird. I didnt accomplish the stuff I wanted. Not in the way I did yesterday. But I did go through my coats. Made some choices. Its hard because I really like all my coats but there were a few I hadnt worn at all this year. And there was my peacoat from ships. It was time to close that door. I was sad to see that coat go but it was time. 

I did really try but I just couldt get myself to be as productive. I mostly just hung out. But eventually me and James took a drive. I had been laying in bed all sad. And I told him I needed to go out and do something. So we drove out to savers to take all of my donation clothes and things. Honestly I think that is my fastest purge to donation turn around in a long time. I had to make some hard cuts, like things I really liked at one time. But I just havent worn in a year. It was a good thing to do and I feel happy. 

We headed home after that quick stop. James helped me update my character sheet for DnD and then I went and laid down. I eventually fell asleep. James says he said goodbye to me before he left for work and I said I loved him but I have no memory of this. I believe him but I was just very much asleep. 

I woke up at 4 and Gaby had messaged me and we made plans for me to get her at the museum around 5. Which gave me plenty of time to clean up and had a snack before I left. 

It was a really fun night. We were down 2 players but I really had a good time. My character didnt talk as much this time but I brought the thumb piano mom gave me for christmas and because my character is a bard I played it almost the whole time we werent in battle. 

It was really good ambient music and it was also a really good fidget for me. Honestly mom A+ gift because I felt so good being able to make music all night and at one point Megan said she forgot I was playing it and it was a CD or something. Felt good. 

It was a long night and I was tempted by pizza. I shouldnt have had two slices as it upset my stomach and put me over my calorie goal. But I have been doing really good so its not the worst thing. But our game ran late and I was just sleepy. 

I was glad to be headed home. And I feel a little better now that Im in bed. I still feel a bit unsettled but its not to bad. I just hope I can sleep easy and that I feel better in the morning. 

Tomorrow I just have wildwood teaching. Im hoping to do some cleaning in the morning. And maybe some art for myself. But well see.

WiFi

[ You and Jeonghan are waiting for Seungcheol to come back to the dorm so in the meantime you two try to use his wifi ] [ d r a b b l e ]

“How long is he gonna be out for?” You whined as you slumped back on the living room couch.

“Miss him already?” Jeonghan said with a smirk.

“Psh no,” You denied as you get comfy with the pillows to which you earned an eyebrow raise from him. “Okay maybe I wish he’d be back soon.”

“Thought so,”

“Hey can I know the password for the wifi?” You asked, bringing out your phone.

Who knows how long Seungcheol is going to be out for? Might as well surf through the net to kill time.

“Gonna stalk his instagram account again?” Jeonghan replied scooching next to you.

“No...”

“Please, Y/N. You’re not exactly subtle,” Jeonghan says grabbing your phone. “Shall I log in to your S.Coups fan account?”

“Give me that!”

Jeonghan laughs, stretching his arm away from you, “I thought you wanted the password?”

You stuck your tongue out at him, “It’s not a fan account. It’s just... a space... for me to you know... support the leader of Seventeen. Is that too bad?”

“Of course not. No way,” Jeonghan reassures patting your back. “Seungkwan and I follow you and we absolutely love the content.”

Your eyes widen and Jeonghan just laughed at your expression again.

“You did not-‘’

He did.

“Want me to quote the latest tweet?”

You just gave him a glare, “Hurry up and put the password in.”

“Okay okay,” he says typing away. “But I do think he should update his ig too.”

“Jeonghan please!” You exclaimed hitting his annoying face with a pillow. You could already feel your face heating up.

Note to yourself: Start a new stan account.

“Huh.” Jeonghan froze staring at your phone.

“What?”

“That’s weird.”

“What is?” You said taking a look at your phone. “You dont know your own wifi password?”

Jeonghan hands it back to you, “It’s Seungcheol’s wifi. And it seems that I actually don’t.”

You looked at his confused expression. Seemingly, the angel questions himself on not knowing.

“But why?”

Jeonghan just shrugs, “He bought it for his gaming stuff. Something about needing fast internet- I dont know.”

“Well that’s great,” You sighed, letting yourself fall back on the couch again. “What am I supposed to do now?”

Jeonghan shakes his head, still in thought. He was sure he got the password right considering he’s been mooching off Seungcheol’s wifi for a few weeks now.

The leader probably found out and changed it again. The dedication he and Wonwoo have with online games, he’ll never know.

“Wonwoo-yah!” Jeonghan shouts across the room.

“What?” Wonwoo answers just as loud.

“What’s the wifi password?” Jeonghan asks when the younger walked over. “Y/N wants to use it.”

“No way,” Wonwoo immediately denied. “Sorry, Y/N. The wifi is for gaming purposes only.”

“You dont know either huh?” You replied knowingly.

“Not a clue,” Wonwoo sighs before sitting next to you. “He wanted to focus on working out one day and decided that he’ll only tell me the password if I agreed to be his gym partner.”

“Well that sucks,” you pouted. “I can’t just sit here without internet. Who knows what’s happening right now?”

“Well we could always guess,” Jeonghan says stealing your phone again.

“I swear to God if you’re doing this just so you can snoop on my account-‘’

Jeonghan put a hand on his chest, feigning hurt, “Why I just dont want you to be bored, Y/N.”

You rolled your eyes at him. You could practically see the devil horns growing from his blonde hair.

“Oh hyung, you still havent sent me Y/N’s fan account,” Wonwoo reminded causing you to gasp.

“You told him too?!”

“Don’t act so surprised,” was all the devil angel said as he guesses another password.

“You have nothing to worry about,” Wonwoo told you. “We wont tell your little crush on our leader.”

“I trust you but not him,” you said pertaining to Jeonghan, who btw has been getting slightly frustrated as all his guesses turned out to be incorrect.

“Ugh. Why did he have to change it? Cant we all just share the wifi?” Jeonghan says giving up.

“Let me try,” Wonwoo says asking for the phone. “He might have used an avatar name for a password.”

Several attempts later...

“Screw it,” Wonwoo throws your phone back. “I’m buying my own wifi and play.”

“So much for trying to kill time,” you sighed and frowned at the situation.

Just then an idea popped into Jeonghan’s mind.

“Y/N, try this,” Jeonghan then started to whisper a bunch of letters as you typed away on your phone.

“Wait a minute...” you paused for a second. “You’re just spelling my name!”

“So?” A smirk grows on Jeonghan’s lips.

“You’re not actually suggesting that-‘’

“Worth a shot,” he simply replied, smile growing.

You looked at him incredulously. There’s absolutely no way.

“Why would I be his wifi password?”

“Why not?” Wonwoo joined in. “He probably thought of you as he was changing it.”

Thought of you? But why? What does that suppose to mean?

“We’re just trying out possible passwords here, Y/N.” Jeonghan spoke again. “It’s not like it would mean something. Not unless you want it to.”

There he goes again. With that smug of a look.

“Why dont we go for your name then?”

“Oh sure. But right after yours.”

It’s strange to you how confident suddenly Jeonghan seems to be. And thats probably because he noticed that you’re not the only one who’s being obvious when it comes to a crush. Someone was especially excited today when he found out you were visiting.

“If it makes you feel better, we could try my name too.” Wonwoo said having the same teasing smirk on his face.

Jeonghan wasnt alone on noticing it either and they both knew as they exchanged looks.

“Fine,” you finally pressed enter. Both of the boys leaning closer to see the phone screen. “But I’m telling you guys, it’s not going to-‘’

“Well would you look at that,” Jeonghan chuckles.

It connected.

“I’m going to get my laptop,” Wonwoo says standing up. “Finally, I can try out the new game I bought.”

A few minutes later, Seungcheol finally got back and was welcomed with his three friends chilling at the living room and on their devices.

“I brought food,” Seungcheol called out as he places the plastic bag on the kitchen counter.

“Thanks,” Jeonghan got up and head towards the counter to take a peek of the snacks. “You were out for awhile.”

“Well when I heard Y/N was coming over, I went to get food from her favorite restaurant,” Seungcheol informed. “And you guys know how far that is.”

“Oh we do,” Jeonghan smirks as he shot you a knowing glance. You blushed and tried to hide your face with your phone.

“Yes!” Wonwoo exclaimed, a proud smile on his lips.

“What’s he so happy about?” Seungcheol asks, walking closer to them.

“He’s just having a winning streak,” Jeonghan answered.

“Yep,” Wonwoo acknowledged finally looking up from his laptop. “Wifi has a great connection. Thanks for buying this, hyung.”

“Wait...” Seungcheol took a look at his device and he really was playing.

How did he get in?

“Yah! Did you hack your way in?” Seungcheol crossed his arms.

“No,” Wonwoo snickers. “I’m not that intelligent. I just simply entered the password.”

“Enter the pass-? Jeonghan!” The angel was just smiling innocently. “Did you tell him?!”

“Only you know the password to your own wifi, Seungcheol.” Jeonghan said as a matter of a fact.

“Yeah but you’re the only one who’s been trying to mooch off my wifi for the past weeks.” Seungcheol huffed, feeling slightly irritated. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you tried to enter again.”

“As much as I’d love to take credit,” Jeonghan says. “But it wasn’t me who entered the password.”

“Then who did?”

Jeonghan just now used his eyes to tell him the answer. As Seungcheol followed his gaze, he felt his heart race when he saw you sitting on the couch, phone in hand, and scrolling through social media.

You were seriously trying to keep yourself from turning red the minute his eyes landed on you.

“Y-you got the password right?” Seungcheol stammered as he clarified.

“More like she’s the password,” Wonwoo teased quietly.

“Well sort of...” You coughed awkwardly. “Sorry.. I got bored while waiting for you so we all started to guess.”

Cue Kill Bill sirens because Seungcheol is now internally panicking.

“S-so you know?” Seungcheol clarified and you nodded slowly.

“I know,” you answered, biting your lip.

“Yep and everyone in the group chat knows too,” Jeonghan added which earned him a glare from the leader. “What? We should all share the wifi, dont you think?”

“Th-that’s f-fine,” Seungcheol tried to laugh it off, doing his best not to snap at Jeonghan. Two of the svt members were trying to retain their laughter as their leader struggled to speak. “Hahahahaha as long as you weren’t bored while I was gone, Y/N. Hahahahaha.”

“Seungcheol I-‘’

“C-could you excuse me for a second? I need to take a breather.”

And with that Seungcheol dashed to his bedroom, determined to not let his cool wash away in front of you.

“Well that was entertaining,” Jeonghan stated, the lopsided smile never leaving his face. “So are you gonna tell him about your fan account or...?”

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake

-Note: It’s kind of embarrassing to admit but my comments around the visuals of A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening are straight-up incorrect. The two games did not share the same visual style and I honestly don’t know why I said that; I most definitely knew better. Still, I’m not going to get rid of it because the internet needs more examples of people admitting to be being wrong.

I say a lot that I want to be positive, but it’s really gonna be hard with this one. See, at the latest Nintendo Direct it was announced that they would be releasing a remake of the 26 year old game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. As it happens I was already considering writing something about this game in a “Games from my Childhood” article, but that would actually have been positive! This one is… well, I’m going to at least try and balance every negative with a positive.

  So where to begin: I won’t cover the story because spoilers but how about some personal background? The game came out a year before I did (ha! bad jokes) and I have no idea when I got my grubby little paws on it, but it was a part of my life genuinely for as long as I can remember, along with the Pokémon games. I never completed it as a child, but my memories of it were so good that I returned to it as an adult and completed it, learning its sad secret.

  Link’s Awakening (LA) was originally a pet project made outside of work hours which is why it borrows resources from other games such as the Mario series, but it was eventually released to critical acclaim. The gameplay is much the same as its immediate predecessor A Link to the Past (LttP), but with a number of new items and a unique soundtrack. Visually it is much the same as well, although its original release was black and white for the GameBoy with Link’s Awakening DX adding colour for the GameBoy Colour.

  So let’s start with the visuals as that is most of what we have right now: the original shared its visuals with LttP what with them using the same assets (tools, resources etc) and LttP had a sequel recently that looked really nice. But the upcoming LA remake looks nothing like it; I wouldn’t expect it to but when a defence of the artistic choice is that “it’s an update of the original graphics” (so why not use the assets from the LttP remake?) or that it somehow “reflects the atmosphere of the original” except there’s no reason for it to be any different to, again, the LttP remake. And in response to the “atmosphere”, LA was one of the darker yet in some ways more whimsical games; this new style is childish to the extreme.

  Don’t get me wrong, I love something that is good and childish, but there is a level when it stops being great and starts to feel like they condescend to the player. Bright colours, simple faces, high pitched noises- Oh god the noises!! I’ll expand on the sounds later but I’m still on the visuals. I’ve heard the game described as looking like Claymation, which isn’t wrong, but my immediate thought was that it looked like cheap plastic. And after watching it again and again as I discussed it with a friend, this opinion stuck.

-tell me this doesn’t look like claymation; this isn’t a game, it’s an animated short film-

  You know how shiny and tacky cheap plastic usually looks? Imagine an entire game like that; an entire world like that. Fans of anime may understand what I say next, but there is a large element of “chibi” in this new game. Large head, tiny body. It’s often seen in short 4 minute spin offs of popular series.

  So shiny plastic, silly chibi art with a soulless expression. Oh yeah, that. Link’s eyes have zero soul behind them. Zero. He’s a freakin’ monster. Have you seen those Funko Pops? You know how empty they look? Some have said it somehow reflects the original game’s art again, but back then they didn’t have the technology to make him look soulless and young me always thought he looked determined; it was really cool.

Okay, so I said I would try and be fair, and I have shat upon the plasticine toy-box long enough, so here’s what is good visually. The areas are actually really nice. 

Ignoring the nail varnish sheen on everything, things are really detailed. There is an unfortunate trend in games, likely due to technical limitations, to have flat textures. Basically, imagine the difference between a tile or wood panel floor, and a picture of a tile or wood panel floor. But this game looks to have really tried in these areas. The grass looks thick and lush, tiles look like more than a photograph on the floor and even the flat flowers on the ground look decent. Just a shame it all looks like LEGO. Actually, a LEGO Zelda game would be awesome. But this is not that.

  I haven’t explained that very well, it’s an area that I am new at but I will say that clearly a lot of care has gone into the assets and the world. It is not a lazy game in any way.

Next I’m going to talk about the sound. First of all, I’m convinced that they have artificially increased the pitch of Link’s voice so it is painfully sharp to the ears. I’ll admit, I have an unusual sensitivity to lights and sound and thus I prefer darker colours and quieter sounds; I avoid clubs like the plague and not just because I’ll likely catch it there. So maybe, just maybe, I’m noticing something that won’t be a problem for most, and is just unfortunate for me. And let’s ignore that it doesn’t match the darker tone of the game.

  And the music? Also quite high pitched. And super cheery. It doesn’t have either the dreamlike or dark tones that could be expected (and just thinking of how it could be dreamlike gives me shivers; it could be so good) but is instead inanely cheery. In fact, I hope they sped everything up for the trailer and the pitch is just an unfortunate side-effect.

  On the plus side, the trailer opens with a cool cinematic and I swear the music changes from a nice, cheerful rendition (I don’t dislike cheerful in-and-of-itself) of the Zelda main theme to the death squeals of various instruments that I mentioned before. On top of that, it ends on a really nice vocal version of the LA theme, Ballad of the Wind Fish. If the trailer had been the cinematic and that closing song alone then I would be beyond excited about the remake. Thank heaven it wasn’t, I’m not sure my love of the series could survive such a plummeting disappointment.

So I’ll finish here. I was originally very pleased, excited even that they had decided to remake what was a favourite, underrated and apparently forgotten game, but I kept my expectations low because I knew what to expect from these companies. I thought I did anyway. I was still disappointed. I thought I had prepared for the worst. Still, at least it gave me something to write about.

  But, the game has clearly had a lot of work put into it and gameplay-wise it actually looks to flow really well so I’m sure it controls like a treat. But the visuals and music are too big of a deal for me to let slide; if it keeps up like this then it could literally be painful for me to play. Still, games do change a lot from the initial trailer to its release and I even put forth an idea of why the sound may hurt me so much here. Maybe the final game will be a lot better. Unfortunately, the things I want to be done in games and such rarely are, and I am often alone in my complaints.

And finally, yes I am aware that the famous and incredibly popular Wind Waker entry in the series also had similar complaints and became, as I said, incredibly popular. I wasn’t a part of that crowd, I was too young and honestly, Link’s Awakening was the only Zelda game I had actually played at that time.

hp update: next chapter finally droooppppeeddd 

had to re-do the last level of the previous chapter to get it, but i got it. eyes were still glitching out of that girls head. 

but what i have seen of the new chapter looks fun so far. the first house elf level was both a let down and very good. the game devs only made 2 house-elf character models. one is of the head house elf (a concept of which im not sure makes sense), and the other is the same dobby knock-off that weve seen in the easter egg the entire game. so you walk into the kitchens and its just a sea of the same emaciated little dude all over the place, working, and saying stuff like “i love working here.” its very a wrinkle in time. it kind of disturbs me that the base elf is dobby now, because i read the art book note on him and it said that they kind of wanted him to look like a prisoner of war. so now thats the look all house elves have. and its like this is supposed to be the good place for them to be, and they all look like creepy pathetic clones of each other. the least thing they could have done is not make up a character specifically to yell at them too, but they did.

but then you talk to pitts and hes like what are you waiting for? grab a giant loaf of bread and get sandwichn’. 

a little meta-humor there with the giant sandwiches that you eat during the lunch mini-games lolololololo. the other elves say stuff like “dont question the sandwiches.” and its like ok you guys got me again im having fun now in this journey of magic and whimsy. 

and! you officially meet the first new befriendable boy, who also has sandwich detention, jae kim. the most noteworthy thing about him so far is that they kept playing the same voice bit over and over again with his lines so its like he just likes to grunt a lot. 

also did the first history of magic class which was super good. its like the one joke class everyone has in high school where the kids are just doing whatever they want the whole time. which happens to include your BFF character, who is a huge nerd and decides to teach the class herself every time the prof falls asleep. again, very fun, very good time. 

there is also currently a holloween special event, where you make decorations with dumbledore for class credit. its cute as well. theres another meta joke that comes from clicking on one of the background characters. “ive seen him in a few of my classes, but dont know his name.” hardy har-har

the next story level i did the pre- cut-scene to, but havent started yet. it takes place in the library for another study sesh. barnaby is there. “im here for moral support :D” he says. of course you are. youre doing great.
