I personally choose to believe that the Hunger Games series is supposed to be Katniss's memoir/way of setting the record straight about her and her loved ones part in the Games/war. Meaning I think the entire country of New Panem was going into a FIT with every new chapter they read, let alone book. Just imagine the podcasts for a second.

So, based on my headcanon Peeta uses both a wheelchair at home or crutches to prevent hurting both his amputated leg AND his good one.

He absolutely delights toastbabies by riding with them on his lap in the chair. They love to playfully try and push him and play in it when Peeta isn't using it. They request their own play crutches to 'walk like papa does', which of course Katniss makes them because when can she say no to her babies ever?.

I think one thing that’s so important about katniss and peetas relationship is the fact that he’s the first person to take care of her since her father died

I mean ever since her father died and she essentially lost her mother along with him she had to step up and take care of her family all by herself. She was suddenly a provider/caretaker/breadwinner at ELEVEN and from then on it was her sole responsibility to take care of everyone in her life (a mindset which obviously continues throughout the entire series)

And that’s why peeta throwing her that bread stood out to her so much- because (other than the fact that it quite literally saved her life) that was the first time since her father died that someone took care of *her*

Even in the first games while they’re huddled together in that sleeping bag in the cave she explicitly says that ‘ever since her father died and she stopped trusting her mother that no one else’s arms had ever made her feel so safe’- the fact that they’re literally in the arena and just being in peetas arms makes her feel safer than she’s felt in years is huge 🥺

Katniss is someone who’s tried so hard since she was a literal child to take care of everyone in her life and not need to rely on anyone and peeta is the one person who (continuously throughout the whole series) is committed to taking care of her (and she actually lets him which is also huge for her)- i.e. taking care of her in the arena after she gets back from the feast, holding her through the nightmares, always bringing over her favorite cheese buns, holding ice on her face and carrying her up to bed when she gets hurt in cf, planting those primroses in the end etc.

I don’t think she realizes how much she’s needed/wanted someone to take care of her until peeta bc every time he makes an effort to take care of her she just *melts* and that’s so much of why she falls so hard for him 🥺

For a girl who’s spent so long needing to take care of everyone she cares about it’s so important that with peeta their relationship is about how they take care of each other. Bc katniss needs someone who’s gonna take care of her as much as she always takes care of everyone else 🥹

Like my girl goes from being awkward and uncomfortable about a mere comment to flirting back with him.

I think people really need to redefine what character development means. Because the core of someone's personality doesn't change all that much, Katniss at the end of the day is still stubborn and impulsive. If you changed everything about a character you might as well be writing someone else, staying true to certain traits your character has is realistic writing. Because as humans certain attributes never really change, we only learn to make exceptions or adapt for certain people or situations.

And that is what happens to Katniss, she leans to stop being stubborn and accept Peeta's love but only for him. In other aspects she continues to be stiff, such as never taking order from authorities, trying run from her squad. All impulsive and stubborn acts, true to her original character.

I think- don't mind me if I step onto this soap box real quick. -I think in a way Finnick and Annie may be a representation of what would have happened to Katniss and Peeta if they had won their games separately.

Maybe I'm just an idiot who looks for parallels where there aren't any, but don't you think Katniss would have gone mad eventually? If she'd been alone in her victory, if she'd had to follow the same rules as the other Victors- prostitution, mentoring, being paraded around like a dog on a leash. -mentally she wouldn't have really survived it all, especially not with the guilt of being the only survivor of her games. Meanwhile, Peeta would go along with it all just like Finnick. Allow himself to be a charming stud with endless lovers who paints portraits of a faceless girl who haunts him endlessly. To survive how he can best; by his charms. And they'd find their way to each other. They always do.

It's why I like to think Annie and Katniss become such close friends after the war. I think they see themselves in each other, and there's a deep peace in that for them.

Anyways. Just a thought.

the fact that after the rescue katniss wanted to kiII peeta so the capitol couldn’t hurt and torture him makes me feel even more sick because that’s exactly what happened and despite giving her all and having spent the catching fire book making decisions based on what would keep him alive in the end she couldn’t save him from that.

katniss knowing her mother isn't at fault for falling into a catatonic depression and that she was completely out of he depth and mourning but still never being able to get over that feeling of betrayal when she slipped away when she needed her most and left her and prim on the brink of starvation

have the people who dogpile those asking for a haymitch or finnick book as having “missed the point” and “being just like the capitol” and “just wanting to see violence” forgotten that The Games themselves often take up significantly less than half of the books???? like when people ask for a haymitch or finnick book they’re very clearly not asking for 40 chapters of kids killing kids ??? they’re asking for books that explore the lives of deeply beloved characters, how those lives were irreparably changed by circumstances beyond their control, and a more detailed illustration of points that only get alluded to in the original books.
