April was growing tired of her son's layabout ways. Sure he went to work, but he was always there in her home. She knew he was bored and listless, and needed guidance. But how many more hints could she drop??

One evening as she found him on the sofa yet again watching cartoons she snapped.

'Dustin, get off my sofa and go take the videos back to the store,' she barked exasperatedly. 'If you're going to mooch off my hospitality like a big child then you can pull your weight.'

Dusty stormed out of the house, angry at his mother for making him feel the familiar pangs of shame and frustration that he always felt about himself these days. He didn't need her nagging him. He wished she would get off his back.

At the video store he grabbed some new films for himself and headed to the counter. He noticed the girl working behind seemed somewhat familiar.

'Did you go to Copperdale High?' he asked as she checked out his films.

'Yeah, class of '89,' she answered. 'You?'

'Class of '88,' said Dusty. 'I swear I usually remember everyone from that place... I mean I knew everyone.'

'I know you, you're Dustin,' she replied. 'I was in the cheer team, with your sister, and Jenny? I heard she dumped you after graduation.'

Dustin didn't need reminding of the biggest shame of his life. The reason he felt like such a loser these days. Why did she have to bring that up?

'I guess we're some of the only people left in this town, hey,' said the girl. 'I'm Kelly.'

Dustin suddenly recognised her. She was much grungier since high school. He was annoyed at her at first, but now he felt less alone as one of the people who remained behind while everyone else went off to college.

'When do you finish tonight? Wanna hang out?' he asked.

'I don't finish til 10... but I could take a break, if you want a smoke?' said Kelly.

Dustin soon found himself smoking weed behind the Blockbuster with Kelly. It was nice to talk to someone his own age. Together they commiserated on how everyone else had left them behind, how life had seemed to pause after high school.

Dustin felt like he'd finally found a friend. Kelly invited him to hang out at her house, and Dusty finally had a reason to go out somewhere. He would take some eers, and they would smoke weed and watch horror movies together. It was a lot of fun. It was the most fun Dusty could remember having in ages.

Trump lost that debate badly. That loss is reflected in post-debate polls where Harris has seen a boost from a performance in which she was reassuringly calm while baiting Trump into dozens of unforced errors—including his baseless claims about immigrants eating pets. But Republicans are now claiming that ABC News, which hosted the debate, provided Harris with questions in advance and promised to fact-check Trump while leaving Harris unhindered. They’re also claiming that there is a “whistleblower” willing to detail how ABC helped Harris—though they can’t seem to decide if that whistleblower is dead or alive.

Trump’s real problem is that he’s a loser who never wants to admit he lost. That was true in 2020, and it’s still true today. To cover up his losing, Trump employs a three-part plan: insist in advance that his opponents will cheat, claim to have won no matter how badly he lost, and then spread conspiracy theories about why he lost. That certainly fits the pattern for the debate. Days before Harris and Trump met, Trump was already pushing his claim that ABC was going to provide Harris with the questions in advance. Gazing up at the bulletin board to the left of the classroom there sits my name at second place.Second to Jay Jo for the third time in a row. Slumping down posture deflates in disappointment ,my red blazer hangs loosely from my shoulders as I lean back on my chair sulking, going through every wrong answer.

“Jay, how much did you get?” Shellys voice rings gently from her seat as she adjusts herself to Face jay.The quiet boy sits and reads seemingly satisfied with his result, his expression as aloof as ever, there's a short silence before his firm voice mumbles.

“100%”

“Seriously? how i got like 67%” she Retorted her blond in a bun with her usual light hearted attitude.”Maybe you could tutor me”

"That's our eunuch for you "Dom intervenes walking up to Jay”SERIOUSLY A 100%!!” His bright raspy voice beams“Man you gotta tell us your secrets dude” Dom expresses exasperated throwing his arms over Jay's shoulder leaning in to look at his test paper.

“You should study more idiot”Yuna Remarked from her table.

“BUT YUNA I PROMISED I DID!?”Dom pleads to Yuna, her annoyed face unphased at his pleas for comfort.“Hey, how did you do?”Dom leans against me .His body uncomfortably close as I flinched at the proximity of the feeling of his figure so close to mine making me scoot away.

“89%??! that's good bro you and jay are super smart” he Exclaimedhis loud voice ringing in my ear. he make his way back to jays desk .“That's not fair i got like a 49%”

I just side-eye him.“I told you to study” I uttered in an annoyed tone .I turned my head to meet Jays from behind me. I look down to his desk and see his perfect score, a red and highlighted 100% on his desk. My eyes move up to meet his dark ones as he suddenly turns his attention to me.

“You did good” His soft firm voice whispers to me as he looks up from the book he's reading to meet my eyes.

“I know”

“You can join me in studying sometimes” Jay offers, as if sensing my disdain for my score.He sets down his book to focus on me.

“I can do it fine on my own” I snapped back.

“I can hel-”

“I don't need you t-”

“Don't forget to meet up after school” a new voice proclaimed from the doorway. He enters the classroom Casually as if he's not three periods late.His light brown hair neatly done as he saunters in with a bright smug grin on his face.Voice calm like the ocean breeze and as carefree as always ,as he settles into the classroom.“Anyone miss me?”

“Your late Minu” I quipped, turning to him.

“But I'm here anyway,” he answers playfully,walking casually towards me , standing over my desk.Minu peers over my shoulder too to see what's on my desk. He makes himself comfortable putting his weight on my left side, his arm leaning on my shoulder.

“Sup……”he greets before looking at my test score ”89% nice”

“Morning”, unphased by his presence I pulled out my phone trying to distract myself from my gloomy mood, mindlessly scrolling through my device trying to find something else to pour my attention to.

“So how's everyone doing? Did I miss anything?”Minu chimes in as he gazes at my pinterest board.

“You missed a test” Yuna mocks him, her arms crossed over her chest, voice dripped with sarcasm and annoyance.

Panic sets itself off on his face momentarily as his grey eyes widen”Are you serious?”

“YES AND WE GOT HOME WORK” Yuna teased torturing her brother enjoying the shocked look on his face.

“She's joking Minu you didn't miss anything too important. Yuna have some mercy for your brother please “ I sighed amused at their antics.

“Then tell him to stop skipping school” A harsh reply comes from her lips as usual.

“He wont listen to me” I look up from my phone and turn to her.

“I seriously can't believe your late Minu” Shelly chimes in making her way to Jay's table.“at this rate i wonder if you'll graduate”

“HEY! I had some very important business to take care of and I'm a dedicated student” he huffs in retaliation.“Tell them”He looks back down to me then to Jay for support his comically desperate pleas for validation falling out of his mouth.

“What are you looking at me for”I chucked tucking my phone back into my bag choosing to focus back on the conversation.

“Support” he replies dejected at my lack of cover up for his shenanigans.

The conversation continues on as the chatter of the hummingbird crew and the other students ring through the room. The day continues on with no troubles. .

The sun begins its descent, signalling the end of practice,the group gradually disperses to head home, leaving only Jay and me behind. Before he can make his exit, I stride up to him, bike at my side, standing beside his imposing figure.

“Race me” With a piercing gaze and an unwavering tone, I demanded his immediate attention.He turned his head to me at the sudden demand.

“Again?”

“Yes,” I casually answered, “The usual route” .

“Fine”

We moved to our usual racing stop not too far from here. I mounted my bike with determination and routined ease,. swung my leg over the saddle, settling into the familiar contours of the seat. Both of us get a tight grip on the handlebars off our bikes .

‘READY”

“SET”

“GO”

Our voices announce in unison as we both propel ourselves forward. The sounds of our gears clicking rang through the area as we gained momentum. Each turn of our peddling pushes us forward, speeding us up. I peddle rhythmically as we race jay quickly catching up to me.

We reach an area with more obstacles than planned but I persist. We make our way through our decided route at alarming speed. My heart races at the thrilling feeling again the freedom that comes with cycling. The wind whipped past me as I sped ahead, my opponent smoothly gliding past me, my gleeful feeling now fleeting .I do my best to sprint and catch up to him .I try to speed up to surpass him but my maximum effort can't catch up.

I see the end point coming up. I try harder to surpass my limit but it's no help. He's too far ahead and he reaches the finish line first with me right behind him.

Behind him as always

The race ends with Jay coming in first again.i sit there wondering how.

A jealous anger seethes into my system at another loss. My breaths are erratic as my chest rises and falls unrhythmically .Sweat drips down my chin as I slow down behind him.I come to a stand still as my heart clenches at the feeling of losing to someone like him.

Why did I lose again?

Each breath came in ragged gasp, lungs aching, chest rising and falling to the rhythm of our breathing.beads of sweat glistening our foreheads .I feel him walk up next to me before he hands me a water bottle. I take it and chug the water down the throat, the refreshing feeling curing my dehydration from the training.

“You okay?” he asked, his tone stoic and cold. A hit of worry in his eyes and he walks up to my bike on his sides .He sets a hand on my shoulder but I shrug it off disgusted at the contact.

“Don't touch me” I seethe out my tone harsh

Jay just stares at me. My gaze lowers to the ground as I crouch down and I take a seat on the pavement.He just looks at me with his regular aloof nature before settling next to me, his breathing now normal and his stature relaxed.

“don't push yourself too far we have a race next week”

“I know don't lecture me“

“Then You should know better” he quips back. He gets up from beside me and towers over me. I lift my gaze to look back up at him. His eyes are cold and unreadable.The disappointed look on Jay's evident and piercing, the way his dark aloof eyes look down on me.

“Don't overwork yourself” Another lecture leaves his lips. It annoyed me. He only lectures me,only annoys me,only has something to say about me.

Can he leave me be for once

I rise from the ground,my body trembling with exhaustion and frustration.

“rest your tire-”

“Shut it”i pause realising how rude i came off again.”sorry……i'm going home bye”

Clenching my fist ,I glare at my bike before mounting it again, taking a deep breath then slowly riding off. I make my way home and as far away from him as possible.Away from everything as fast as possible.

Once Buck’s drifted off to sleep, snug and relaxed under the big blanket, Eddie rolls over and grabs his phone off the nightstand. He opens one eye, turns the brightness all the way down, clicks onto the browser, and types am i gay quiz in the search bar.  Dozens of links pop up. He clicks on the first one, marks the answers that resonate the most with him, and frowns when his results of 89% straight flash on the screen with a sullen face.  “What the fuck does that even mean?” he mumbles and then, with a fierceness that crinkles his brow, clicks off the quiz and finds another.  He takes seven more, each a little more deranged than the last, and throws his phone to the hardwood floor when he gets his eighth variation of Unfortunately, you aren’t gay! because he’s upset. It thuds loud and heavy, and slides face up all the way to his closet; the screen shines bright like a little flashlight, illuminating the corner.  Eddie huffs, flops onto his back, crosses his arms over his chest, and pouts.  How dare those quizzes diagnose him heterosexual? Yeah, sure, he has a preference for feminine-presenting people, but he’s had plenty of cock to know he’s not straight, too, and being in heterosexual-passing relationships don’t make him any less queer. He’s worked too damn hard to accept himself, selfishly and fearlessly and totally, to let a few quizzes invalid him.  Which—why was he taking the quizzes in the first place? He knows he’s queer and he doesn’t need a pompous test on the Internet to tell him so, Christ. He’s acting like a lovestruck kid with his first crush on another boy.  The absurdity of the situation makes him giggle. He swipes a hand over his face to muffle his laughter, but his body shakes, so near Buck’s, and it rouses Buck around. Eddie sobers and shuts his eyes, feigning sleep.  It doesn’t work.  This must be how Christopher feels when it’s past his negotiated bedtime of midnight.  Buck murmurs, a pitiful noise, and snuffles close. “Eddie?” He noses along Eddie’s shoulder until he has his face stuffed in Eddie’s throat, right where his pulse throbs. “Wha’s goin’ on? Heard a noise.”  “It’s fine,” he says, wrapping Buck up in his arms and pulling him in, until he’s nearly laid out atop Eddie’s body. His weight feels nice, solid and sturdy. “Go back to sleep.”  Buck smacks his lips, puffs his stinky breath in Eddie’s face, and sighs. “M’kay.” He cuddles in, nestling up over Eddie’s body like three’s no other place in the world he wants to be, and goes still. “Nighty night.”  Eddie exhales. “Night, Buck,” he says, setting his chin on top of Buck’s head and running his fingers through Buck’s sweaty, frizzy hair.  He looks at his phone in the corner one last time and wonders if there are any quizzes on the Internet that might help him figure out if he’s in love with his best friend before he eventually dozes off, too, wrapped up tight beneath Buck’s big body.
