So, overall thoughts on 393 & predictions for 394:
I really liked 393 for the most part. I do have one gripe/concern with the current situation (and I’m gonna talk a lot more about that than anything else; that’s just how the internet is sometimes); but overall I really liked a lot of what this chapter did.
First off, the flashback to the League; the camaraderie, the stupid jokes, Dabi being a pretentious jerk who thinks these people aren’t his friends when they totally are. It’s all just *chef’s kiss* perfect, no notes. Other’s have gushed enough for this scene and analyzed all the interesting things it says about these characters so I’ll just add:
Tumblr media
“Dudes...Being Dudes!” Can’t believe I didn't see that until now.
But moving on from the “dudes”: Uraraka has earned my praise for having done easily the best to reach out to her villain of any hero kid in the entire arc; not least of which because she’s the only one having any back and forth, and because she seems to be genuinely trying to help Toga. Uraraka’s position isn’t quite perfect, still room to improve for reasons we’ll get too; but she has by far done the best at talking to her villain out of the entire class thus far. Her blood offering™ especially is really big for Toga.
Although, briefly moving on to predictions for the next chapter: my hottest take of a theory is that...I’m honestly not sure how Toga will take Uraraka’s offer. Because having someone in her life who understands her and is willing to offer her blood was, once upon a time, everything Toga ever wanted. But now there’s a bigger question on her mind that Uraraka hasn’t really answered properly yet.
Tumblr media
What will she do with Toga? What will happen to Toga if she goes along with whatever Uraraka wants her to do now?
This is basically my biggest and only remaining concern for this plot-line: Toga still absolutely believes she’ll be sent to death row if she’s captured, and her prospects genuinely don’t look good from an objective view. And when Toga brings this up, Uraraka…doesn’t really go against her claim. I mean she makes clear she doesn’t want to murder Toga like Hawks did Jin; but her still going to death row seems a part “the obvious truth for both of [them]” and she “can’t wipe [Toga’s] slate clean”. So what will/can she do for Toga’s very real fear for her life?
It's possible Uraraka doesn’t have any good answer for that. I know some readers are interpreting the dialogue to think she does, that she’ll keep Toga from going to prison if Toga gives up; but putting myself in Toga’s shoes, it doesn’t sound like she’s willing or ready to go against the legal grain like that. And if she doesn’t then, for as much as she’d like that lifetime’s worth of blood, Toga may not give up here if she thinks her lifetime will be a few weeks that way. Heartbreaking as that’d be for her. (Which makes the drama queen in me consider this outcome even more.)
And also just in general, when the Todoroki’s fumbled saving Dabi as bad as they did; I can’t help but doubt Ochako’s chances of fully reaching to Toga in turn just a little.
Although…all that being said; Uraraka’s specific terms on the blood offering™ aren’t for Toga’s surrender. That’s just all of us reading between the lines, and maybe even jumping the gun. Ochako is asking to talk about love, so there may be a twist to expectations there where Toga still fulfills her end of the bargain without just giving up the fight for her life in exchange for blood.
What might come from that I can’t say. Well besides maybe discussing Uraraka’s feelings for Deku but I don’t know anything interesting that’d come from that. Although, maybe it’ll come back around to Toga’s fear for her life if she brings up her loved one, Twice, getting killed by a hero and who Toga is trying to avenge. And maybe this’ll get Uraraka to contemplate the kind of double standard she & her side have been applying to which actions warrant consequences. I mean if Hawks & Endeavor got off scot-free for their wrong doings (not to mention the currently ongoing Operation: Kill Shigaraki); maybe being lenient with the League in turn would be fair. That’s one way I think their conversation could go anyway.

So something that stuck out to me about this panel are the flowers Rei is holding, which we’re told Endeavor has sent her before since Rei once mentioned to him that they are her favorite:
Tumblr media
To be more specific, what stuck out to me was the way she is holding them: upside-down, which is a bit unusual so naturally, there had to be some kind of symbolism behind this - and there is: An "upside-down bouquet portrayed the exact opposite of the flowers' common meanings."
For example, in art, an upside-down rose represents rejection. But Rei isn’t holding a rose, so that isn’t necessarily the meaning here. A lot of people have suggested that Rei's flowers are Rindou, also known as Autumn Bellflowers, and one of the meanings this flower has in Japanese is 「悲しんでいるあなたを愛する。」 (= I love you who is sad).
And so when we take these two points together, the panel shows us that Rei doesn't love the one who is sad; in other words the man who is currently crying in his hospital bed who has been associated with these flowers.
In chapter 298 we got a first look into what's in store for Shouto, who concluded that he and Touya are the same and thus it's Shouto who has to take care of him because Endeavor couldn't possibly get through to him considering he’s the reason Touya became Dabi in the first place.
It's fair to assume that something similar applies here too. Although Rei was shown to consider giving him another chance or at least allow him to “make sense of it all”, watching him try and be better, things are different now. As suggested before, the Touya reveal was a sort of wake-up call. The Todorokis all try to be selfless and create a happy family despite no one being completely happy that way, and Touya just said what everyone’s been thinking this whole time: I’m not okay. And Rei understood this cry for help the best. Because of that, Rei won't side with Endeavor, but with her child.
So I think the flowers here represent the end of her hope. She isn’t going to hold on to the sad man who has caused the entire family pain. It’s the start of a new era and one that isn’t about him.

Do you have any thoughts on the Pro-Hero's discussion about Shigaraki and his hatred from chapter 311?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My thoughts are this, from both Jeanist and Hawks utter cluelessness to why Dabi could possibly have turned into a villain despite Dabi just telling them why, on tv, and being next to the man who pushed him into it, and from how all three of them fail to understand how Shigaraki could have been so easily groomed into hatred reflects an unacknowledged shadow for all three of them.
In Jungian psychology the concept of the shadow exists. The Shadow is an unconscious aspect of the personality which is outside of the conscious ego. While our consciousness is mainly made out of behaviors and memories, we judge as positive, and our Shadow differentiates by holding emotions, behaviors, and memories we label as adverse or painful. In a shadow, constructive perspectives might be incorporated, but most of the parts remain camouflaged under the thumb points of low self-esteem ness, anxieties, and false beliefs. "Everyone carries a shadow," stated Jung "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. To know yourself, you must accept your dark side. To deal with others' dark hands, you must also know your dark side.
In other words, for characters like Enji and Hawks, all of their bad traits define them just as much as their good traits, to be a whole and complete person they have to recognize those bad traits instead of being in denial of them however, both of them choose to only see themselves as heroes.
Anyway, now for something completely different. Let’s talk about batman and the joker. Batman uses Jungian symbolism a lot, of all the heroes he’s the most famous for being a normal person, who dresses in a costume to fight crime specifically in shadowed alleyways, and has a rogues gallery that also consists of mostly normal people in costumes. Batman’s villains are batman. Batman plays with both the relationship between himself and his villains, and also the relatinoship between Bruce and his own Shadow, because his Shadow is part of who he is.
Tumblr media
Now the most iconic batman villain is obviously the joker, and he’s a character like All for One who most of the time is just written as a character who does evil for evil’s sake, but more serious looks at the Joker like The Killing Joke which My Hero Academia directly references make this comparison between the two of them. The famous One Bad Day speech is also, notably, an attempt for Joker to connect to batman, to try to explain himself to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s not just spouting a villain speech, he’s also looking for sympathy and trying to give sympathy, because that’s just what humans do. Because deep down, both Batman and the Joker were normal people once. The connection between Batman and the Joker is that they were both normal people, but one of them became a hero, and the other one a villain, and therefore that potential exists in any normal person.
However, the heroes in MHA still don’t acknowledge their connection to the villains. Hawks and Enji did apologize yes, but what’s also important is their actions after, which is to choose to continue fighting villains as heroes.
Tumblr media
It’s been pointed out by Shoto before that what Enji really needs to do to heal his family, is act like a good father, rather than a good hero. However, when given the chance to reach out to his son, he chooses to fight it instead. There’s a reason that the public isn’t reassured by the actions of Hawks, Jeanist and Endeavor and that’s because they continue to keep playing heroes instead of acknowledging what’s wrong. I’m not saying they are good or bad people, both Hawks and Enji have bad sides of their personality that they are almost completely ignorant of. They, like any human being have the potential to be driven to villainy. That’s why Enji can’t reach out to his son, because his brains have still made the connection that he was what drove Toya to villainry.
It comes across in the casualness which Enji remarks upon what AFO did to Shigaraki and the complete lack of self awareness. Enji did the same thing, he had a child for the sake of passing on his quirk, raised that child to hate all might and want to do anything to surpass him, and he even wanted to live vicariously through the success of Toya and then Shoto so everyone would know him as Endeavor’s son. He still only cares about Toya to the extent that his dreams were once resting on him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when Enji makes the connection to AFO, he asserts that there must be something wrong with him to do all those bad things, because he’s unaware of the resmeblance between his own deeds and AFO’s. He sees himself as a human being with reasons for his bad actions, he didn’t mean to neglect Toya, he didn’t know what to say to him, he was too guilty and hid from his guilt for so long but he doesn’t allow his enemies to have that guilt. This is a pattern that repeats with Hawks, and Jeanist as well, they can’t understand why people like Twice and Dabi would feel like they have a right to be angry at the society that mistreated them.
Jeanist’s defense is why can’t he just keep quiet about it.
Tumblr media
Twice’s last words were hating Hawks and wishing the worst for him, yet Hawks still thinks they were best friends somehow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawks and Twice were not friends, because Hawks chose not to be his friend, and to hurt what was most precious to Twice which was all of his other friends. Enji chose not to be a father to Toya and not be a father. Enji and Hawks are neither heroes nor villains, they are not good or bad, they’re just humans and as humans they have the potential to be both.
In only seeing the hatred that Shigaraki was groomed to have they’re also fundamentally misunderstanding him. The thing is Shigaraki has reasons for his hatred, and not just because AFO forced him to feel that way. It’s not just AFO, that’s what they critically misunderstand, it’s Shigaraki’s experiences with how the society around him has neglected both him and his friends.
Tumblr media
That’s something that the heroes can never see, because Shigaraki has been assigned the role of a villain who hates society. It’s not just AFO, Shigaraki can’t be at peace with a society that is designed to reject others.
Tumblr media
That doesn’t come from his hate either, it comes from his sympathy with the victims. Just like they only see their own good traits, they can only see the villain’s bad traits. The thing is we have witnessed Shigaraki constantly been challenged on the fact that he only has empty hatred, first by Stain, then by Chisaki, and finally be Re-Destro. We also witnessed the moment he changed.
The conclusion Shigaraki comes to as the result of his arc is that while he himself doesn’t care about the people, he’s not alone anymore, he wants to give the future to the others around him.
Tumblr media
That’s why Shigaraki’s actions aren’t driven just by hatred, but also by a deeply broken sense of empathy. Not only is he a crying child himself, he’s also someone who acknowledges the feelings of others. What converted Spinner from being someone who didn’t particularly care about the goals of the league, and doubted Shigaraki in front of everyone to his most loyal follower.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s because he came to recognize that this human side of Shigaraki was there. The same way that underneath his mask, Spinner was just a pathetic NEET struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy, Shigaraki gets close to broken people, he tries to protect them, he tries to give some kind of validation to their feelings.
Shigaraki has grown from just hating all of society because it rejected him, to realizing the real reason is because it rejects everyone around him. That means while there’s hatred to his character, there’s also a very selfish and intense love that applies to a small group of people, but the potential for love is still there. Shigaraki reaches out and saves people the same way that Deku does, he tries to do all the fighting himself to protect others just like Deku, it’s just that he’s been hurt again and again and that’s twisted him to act on his worst trait. None of the heroes understand Shigaraki’s love, because they can only see his hate.
It’s not just that he’s been victimized or that he’s a crying child. Shigaraki is constantly compared to a child both in a negative sense as a man child, and a positive sense as a child pure heartedly pursuing their dream, because there is that potential within Shigarkai, to grow up, and grow into a better person if he was given the same chance to atone that characters like Hawks and Enji have already received.
Shigaraki and Deku just like batman and the joker both reflect that in perfectly normal people, there’s the chance for great good, or great evil. For Shigaraki there’s an added level of complexity, that you can still grow into a better person, after everyone has written you off as too far gone. You can still grow to love the people around you when you thought you were only capable of hating.
Enji and Hawks still have the oppurtunity to grow just like that, not as heroes, but as people.
However to truly grow as people they would have to learn to empathize with the villains, especially because they have done wrong things too, Hawks killed because he had to, Enji hurt his entire family. Defeating the villain really is not the solution, because sometimes you yourself are the villain.
In order to fully grow as people they have to learn to see themselves as people, and not heroes. That also means admitting the villains are just as human as they are. If Endeavor is someone who can become better after realizing that he made so many mistakes in the past and the only thing he can do about it is try to do better from now on, then Endeavor’s ending point should be realizing that since he was given that chance by his family, others deserve that chance too, especially his own son.  People are not villains, or heroes, Endeavor is just Enji Todoroki and Dabi is Touya Todoroki deep down no matter how they see themselves.

A Room Full of Untold Wishes...
A Room Full of Untold Wishes... by Wh1t3Blu3b3ll
The pink-haired girl slammed her hand on Shouta's table, and he sighed tiredly. ‘’Mina, just how many times have I told you-’’ ‘’We ask your permission to kidnap Eri for the weekend!’’ Kami-sama… ‘’Mina!’’ Iida chided the pinkette, making the girl's grin turn into a pout, ‘’That is not a way to-’’ Shouta raised his hand, silencing Iida before turning towards Mina, who now had the guts to look sheepish in front of him. ‘’Elaborate?’’ he demanded, and the girl let out a nervous laugh. ‘’Well, the thing is…’’ she let out another awkward laugh, making him raise his right brow. ‘’Yes?’’ he urged and the girl sighed, before setting both of her hands on the table, this time looking him right in the eyes with a grin. Kami-sama. He was getting too old for all of this. ‘’Sensei!’’ she said, firmly and he fought back the urge to massage his forehead. ‘’Yes, Mina.’’ he said and heard one of the gremlins let out a chuckle from behind the pinkette. ‘’We are planning on kidnapping Eri on Saturday to go stargazing!’’ ~~~~ Class 1-A learns that Eri doesn't know what stars are, so they plan an Stargazing activity for the weekend.

Slow Burn
Slow Burn by DrAphra
Keigo isn't a fan of fires. Bad for the wings, worse for the avian lungs. But he's a hero, and he'll go where he's needed, help out where he can. People love the assistance of a top ten hero, after all.
Or so he thinks, until one smokin' firefighter tweaks his feathers just the wrong way. --- Touya doesn't hate heroes, but he's not their biggest fan either. In fact, his favorite pastime is sarcastically thanking his dad over Twitter for keeping him in the job. Still, life is good as a firefighter. Actually pretty fun, with all the shit Station 69 gets up to.
Until Pro Hero Hawks starts hanging around.
Then life gets downright interesting.

Over time, Tenko realizes Touya shows his love in different ways.
They’re both not the most emotionally stable people, and even now it’s hard. Touya still struggles with the knowledge that he is not just an extension of Endeavor and that he is his own person. Some days Tenko has trouble remembering he’s more than a vessel for destruction, that he is worth more than what he was brought up for.
Things are better than they were before, but… They still have their scars, and they won’t just magically disappear one day, so it can be difficult for both of them to just outright say “I love you.”
Eventually, Touya works up the courage to say it back, but it’s still sparingly. Tenko doesn’t mind, though. Not after he realizes that Touya has been telling him that he loves him this entire time in more than just words.

Or, a study of the many different ways a person can say “I love you.”

Ooo i found it interesting what you said about like different flavors of tropes existing cuz like i used to think i like enemies to lovers cuz i liked shizaya which is basically a poster child for it but got sour on dabihawks p fast after looking at the ship as its own thing outside rp spaces. N i was confused cuz like, i like enemies to lovers? Shouldnt i like this? But no i felt like i kinda shipped dabihawks cuz it was popular n the only ship i had any positive feelings for with hawks but i just...couldnt rly stay on board. N when you said that you like enemies to lovers cuz its ppl seeing each others worst sides n still falling in love i realized thats nit it for me at all.
Like what i think i like in enemies to lovers is complicated interpersonal reletionship. The ups the downs the tripping stones i think soukoku is a perfect example of this. Like they were parenters n they got on each others nerves n fought a lot but they still trusted each other so much. But then dazai left mafia n with that chuuya. Theres that complication that a story must untie if they are to be together. Like id say satosugu falls into this too but they are kinda hard to categorize. They are friends, they are enemies, they are forever lovers. N like as much of foils as dabihawks are to each other and as much as hawks is connected to todorokis they just dont have that level of complexity in their reletionship that makes me go 👀. Like they COULD if they interacted n talked more, there is a lot of complexity in a reletionship between a hero n a villain, but they just dont rly, not in canon. Not enough. Like they dont really seem that invested specifically into each other they are both more so endeavor oriented. There could be more but idk im too cold on them to think it through. Also Dabi crossed a line big time in 'what can be ironed out in a reletionship' for me in the raid so that might be the reson i fell off too
But yeah i think what i meant to say is that i like ships that have complicated feelings about each other, a compled reletionship and problems that influence them both and that must be resolved so they can be together. I mean ive been ranting to my brother about how complex satosugu is for ages ;;;; it just so happens that its enemies who have these kinds of reletionships the most often
So yeah i think its more complicated then simply saying 'this is what enemies to lovers is', i think most ppl have a specific brand of their own they like to see thats not that easils labled. Hmmm much to think about.
Ooooh! I like that interpretation for enemies to lovers too! The complicated and messy relationship and feelings that surround said relationship is also a big draw in for me when it comes to these pairings. Shizaya and Soukoku are such good examples of feelings becoming twisted until they’re not sure what exactly they feel but in completely different ways.
For Shizaya, Izaya and Shizuo are sure they’re obsessed with each other due to their hatred and yet they don’t even know exactly why they hate one another and in fact are usually drawn to other characters that reflect each other perfectly. They’re so interesting in the fact that they constantly surprise one another and yet they still know each other so intimately.
Soukoku is such an interesting pairing because they go from enemies to partners/friends to enemies to partners/friends again. They’re constantly switching up their dynamic but one thing that can be sure between the two of them is that they trust each other. They’re two characters who know each other inside and out and are constantly able to see through one another and be sure they have the other’s back (though Dazai does try and draw a wedge between them but that’s a topic we’ve already been over XD).
In fact, Satosugu are the same way. They know the other deeply despite what title applies to them (enemies, friends, lovers, it doesn’t matter) and that’s what makes pairings like these so fascinating.
It probably doesn’t help that usually these characters are literally made for one another (Shizuo exists for Izaya, Chuuya for Dazai and it wouldn’t surprise me if Geto filled that role for Gojo).
Dabihawks really falls short when it comes to that. While I love how Hawks and Dabi are constantly able to surprise one another, they don’t have the deep and intimate understanding of each other that we see in other enemy to lovers ships. They have a dynamic but it’s a very basic hero and villain one and doesn’t really go much deeper (it definitely could have though which makes the pairing so frustrating. So much missed potential T-T).
Out of all four pairings, I will admit Dabihawks is my least favourite because they don’t have the same spark of the other mentioned pairings do. I still ship it but I’m a much more casual shipper of it nowadays.

I made an AU but Tumblr won't let me send the whole thing and I'm impatient
Well, fuck my need for privacy, because none of my friends really “love” BNHA like I do, and the limit for Tumblr anonymous asks are apparently “five” and I want some feedback (and validation. I admire you a lot and love your works, hamlet. God, I’m a mess) So, here we go.
I’m just going to call this AU “The ‘Quirkless’ Givers” AU. So, in this BNHA AU, most people who gain quirks lose a piece of the humanity they and their anncestors once had. Sometimes it’s their intelligence, sometimes it’s their empathy, sometimes it’s their bravery.
It’s part of the reason why so many people with strong quirks don’t apply them well or become selfish heroes.
However, Quirkless people, or people with weak/invisible quirks? They’re the most human of humanity, and that’s to say, while they may not be the strongest or most clever, their empathy is very strong. While some don’t show it, they all have a heightened sense of emotional awareness. Basically, a case of “you gain some, you lose some”.
The only setback? Most quirkless people do not live over twenty. Quirklessness is considered a disease, because in some ways, it is.
See, quirkless people may be emotionally strong and aware, their bodies aren’t. All quirkless people are born “sick”. They all seem to have some sort of illness that drains their weakened bodies of its energy, until eventually, their bodies gives up. Because of this, most quirkless people remain in hospitals.
It only adds to the pre-existing myth that “Quirklessness is contagious” (it really isn’t), so the people who live past twenty don’t get to live long, often taking their own lives.
Except… they aren’t quirkless. Not really. And only one person knows this.
Quirkless people actually have the ability to give their energy, their happiness, their well-being to others- all at the cost of their own. And when you live in a hospital, there’s plenty of people to give it to.
Midoriya Izuku was born Quirkless and sickly. Before he turned four, he often played with the other kids at his school who were often accident-prone. (He’d visit everyone when they were sick and/or at the hospital. Some kids who observed fatally injured were miraculously cured/healed. I wonder why… )
Anyways, when he was diagnosed “Quirkless”, Inko immediately rushed Izuku to the hospital to see if he had “the disease”. Unfortunately, he observed several symptoms.
Fortunately, though, he was told that, while he would probably have to stay in the hospital in his teenage years, he could, for now, stay at home and go outside.
Cue Izuku walking around town and helping everyone he can. He actually runs into a lot of (future) Class 1-A like this, as well as two very familiar black-haired and yellow-haired teachers… hm…
His friends either avoid him (because of the stigmas around “Quirklessness”) or treat him like glass. Bakugo tries this, too, and at this point, he’s Izuku’s only friend, so Izuku sets him straight… by clocking him with his fist. (He got in trouble, but it fixed his relationship with “Kacchan” by reassuring him “I may not become a hero by your side, but I can help where I can and I’m strong enough to hold my own”.)
As his little “walks” continues, his health deteriorates and it stresses out his mom. He’s actually hospitalized at the early age of eleven. The symptoms just got worse faster than the doctors thought they would.
The Bakugos and Inko visit Izuku frequently (Inko and Kacchan: daily, the rest of the Bakugos every weekend). Occassionally, one of his school friends will come hang out… from a distance (and we thought misinformation was bad in this day and age). Kacchan will come and drop off schoolwork/homework, because Izuku was dropped off the school registry, because the school decided, with Izuku bedridden, there’d be no point in continuing his education. Izuku and Kacchan were very salty.
Anyways, Izuku meets many people who are in need of help, love, and encouragement during his stay. Whenever he’s allowed to (or if he decides to sneak out), he’ll walk around and help visitors and reassure them that things will be alright. Somehow, the people he visits are discharged early for somehow recovering so quickly… hm…
(He also meets Todoroki Rei during his time there and quickly befriends her. She laments to him of a husband who she loves but keeps her caged here. Soon enough, she gains enough mental fortitude and courage to stand up and speak against her husband, with the help of Lawyer Mamadoriya. Soon, Endeavor has his licence temporarily revoked (there’s only so much she can do) and her children are in her custody. Izuku is suddenly visited weekly by Rei and her kids, including Dabi, because I subscribe to “Dabi=Todoroki Touya”)
Anyways, fast forward, Izuku is fifteen, and UA’s USJ has been attacked. The damage is devistating, and UA is actually shut down for a whole week because of it. Izuku watches as a bunch of 1-A’s students and two of their teachers are wheeled in (he recognizes all of them, except for Thirteen, from his past hero-hunting days.)
That day, he visits Todoroki and Bakugo after they’re removed from the ICU. He sees how devistated they are and how badly their classmates and teachers are hurt, and decides, since he’s stuck at the hospital anyways, he might as well do his best to keep the other students and teachers happy and help where he can.
(He doesn’t live past the week. He knows he won’t, but he doesn’t care.)
In the end, he dies clutching Aizawa’s perfectly healed hand the day before Aizawa is discharged.
The next week, school starts up for them again, but every 1-A student and teacher attends the funeral of a fifteen year-old boy who died saving them all.
And to this day, you’ll still hear them herald the tale of a green-haired boy who gave all that he had to them, until he was left with nothing.
(What they won’t tell you is that he wrote each of them a letter. A letter explaining his hopes, his dreams, his passion, and how he wished them the best. However, they will tell you that he is now the dead author of “The Givers”, a book that explains the true condition of the Quirkless. And in the end, the thing he gave most of? Hope. He gave hope to the people who lost theirs.)
Woo, this one was fun. It’s mostly just tidbits and scenes I thought up throughout my day. I hope you like it. I think I’ll write about it, but like I said, I want some feedback from someone who’s actually watched (and likes) BNHA. (Also, what dignity? There’s none here! ;v;) Also, please tell me if there’s something I need to fix. It’s currently one AM, and my creativity might not sleep, but my grammatical skills and logic sure can.
PS: If I could go on a rant on how much I love you and your work, I would. Maybe I will. Just needed to let you know before I disappear off the face of Tumblr again.
From Hamlet:
AHH BRO IM CRYING HHHH I LOVE THIS,,,, bru him,,, the truest hero - giving his everything to save people no matter the cost,,,, i love this also bruh the p a i n this is so sweet dude

About your answer about wether Rei was or wasn’t forced , I think it was extremely biased.
On one hand, it’s true that Enji was a very good candidate and it was hard answering him no. It is true that in Japanese society classical family structure is really wanted. However it is as much as true that in Japan no one can force no one to marry another. And it’s very true that coming of age is 21 years old. So basically Rei married right away and had Touya, without going to university or such. Those who says that are Shoto and Touya who aren’t their father first one fans. In an ambiguous situation they’d pick the interpretation the blame their father the most. It’s not right to say that Enji forced Rei into marry him. He was a stranger to her. It’s more correct that either Rei thought good of Enji (meaning that they had a good start which would explain the flower thing) or that Rei was highly pressured by her family to get married. Because a parent would have protect their child If they thought the husband is abusive. A recurrent pattern for abusers is having their prey cutting out all their social support, but Rei was free to call her mother, so that’s wasn’t the case. Furthermore Japanese are overall conservative; they’d not like a divorcs of a big scandal. So I can see her parents to push her into remain married to Enji. However once the damage is done (Rei’s hospitalisation) there’s no choice they couldn’t intervene in someway. There are only the following possibilities: Rei liked Enji. For real. She might not have been super in love with him, but she was ok with him. And she wanted more children because so. Things got worse only later. Two, she was courted by Enji, but it’s her family that pressured her. Same family who left their daughter being in hospital for 10 years. And that after this and the loss of their grandchild never played a role in their grandsons life. In all Todorokis stuff grandparents are never mentioned. Meaning that yes , Enji is bad. But Rei’s family must be even worse and not caring than he is.
I’m gonna have to ask you to keep that kind of messed up mindset out of my askbox. You can like Endeavor, but then do us both a favor and don’t talk to me or try to convince me of something that isn’t true.
I’m also not sure what part of it is biased when I was providing sources from the canon story.
People like to defend Endeavor by claiming that what Shouto or Dabi say are biased views. Of course, people are biased, especially when it comes to business they are involved in. Endeavor is biased too in that way, and so is Rei. If you want to use that argument, you can’t believe anything anyone is saying, which then defeats the purpose.
But that doesn’t erase the fact that no one in that family (including Endeavor) denies that he created that family for his eugenics project. He specifically chose Rei because his flaw was that there is a limit to how much heat his body can take so he needed his offspring to have something to work against that, i.e. an ice quirk. So it’s confirmed, even by Endeavor, that this is a quirk marriage. That’s not bias, that’s taking literally everyone’s word.
Like I said before, forcing someone into marriage doesn’t mean threatening them. It’s, in fact, much easier to butter them up. So yeah, maybe he was nice to her at first. They were both extremely young, and with that, Rei was also more naive. As Shouto mentions, Endeavor had fame and wealth that made it easy for him to convince Rei’s family to let him marry her. So why not also convince Rei that she wants to marry him? Again - it’s stated by Endeavor himself that he chose Rei because of her quirk. So even if a part of him did like her, she was still just a means to an end for him.
In that same chapter, he even tells All Might: “I’ll mold [Shouto] into a hero who surpasses you. That’s the only reason I created him.”
As you can see with that, he also admits that his kids only exist for that one purpose. He doesn’t see them as his children, only as a way for him to reach his goal.
Also, abusive relationships are a complex subject and there is not just one single type of them, which is why it makes it difficult for outsiders to recognize something as an abusive relationship if it doesn’t fit their idea of a stereotypical relationship.
Just because something is a “recurring pattern” doesn’t mean that it applies to every situation. He might not have cut her off from her parents, but then he cut her off from their kids because of one incident. As soon as she became a threat to his perfect creation, she had to go.
The unfortunate truth is that oftentimes, victims don’t even see the abuse, especially because long-term abusive relationships usually follow the patterns of the cycle of abuse. To sum this concept up, abuse happens, but at some point, the abuser apologizes or sends their victim presents to remind them of their happy moments (i.e. the flowers). That gesture then makes the victim feel guilty for seeing their abuser as an abuser since they are nice to them right then and there, so clearly they’re not all that bad. And maybe things are better for some time. But eventually, the abuse happens again.
Yes, the abuser can “love” their victim and the victim can love the abuser. That is why it’s difficult for victims to leave their abuser. It’s not just fear, but also guilt, and hope that can keep someone in an unhealthy situation.
The reason why victims often stay in those relationships for so long is that they don’t recognize it as abuse. And more often than not, the people around them don’t see it, either. Again: abuse is a complex topic.
Her agreeing to have more children doesn’t mean it’s not an abusive relationship.
Endeavor put her in a mental hospital and you are trying to pass the blame to her parents? No. You do realize that in that sort of classical family structure, marriage means the father passes the daughter off to another man (= the husband).
I’m not saying her parents aren’t to be blamed, but stop blaming everything and everyone other than Endeavor when he is still the culprit that started all of this in the first place.
Just read the story again and do some research on abuse before trying to defend the abuser and deny the abuse. You’re not getting anything out of this, so just stop using harmful rhetorics.

Thoughts on chapter #293 (AKA a very long post)
I made a post when chapter #292 came out and one person replied with "I love how everyone thinks that villain stans automatically agree with and condone the villains' actions". I don't think myself to be a villain stan, although I do love Horikoshi's villains, since they're all amazingly interesting characters. There are villains that I feel very compassionate to: Shigaraki, Dabi, Twice, Spinner and Toga. And I could instantly relate to Stain's philosophy, while being totally turned off by his actions. I don't think villain stans condone the violent actions of their favorite characters, I'm sorry if my previous post made people believe I do. But from the most recent releases I gathered that there is maybe a small fraction of villain stans that aren't really seeing the intricacies of the full picture. I don't mean this in a bad way: this is definitely the villains' time to shine and I know we were all waiting for the big Dabi-Endeavor showdown since theories were thrown around, so it's normal to be hyper-focused in what our favorite character is doing or what's happening with them. It's easy to forget that there are times and places where it's safe to show our compassion. I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda annoyed that some villain stans seem to want the heroes to show compassion to Dabi right now, while they're in the middle of a battle that would decide the sorts of their society. Thanks to Dabi's speech, the civilian's faith in their "picture-perfect" system is crumbling (well, I hope so, because their society sucks on so many levels) and Best Jeanist, who was bashed for absolutely no reason all over Twitter last week, before the official translation was out, knew that that was Dabi's intention all along. Tōya could have told his own story right after Stain's video came out, if he so wanted. He chose to join the League, instead, because as we know now, he might have thought that he would have a better chance to kill Shōto, that way. I can't blame Tōya AT ALL for wanting and needing to see Endeavor, finally, rightfully, punished. However, Dabi throwing the compassion card around in the middle of a life-and-death situation (a situation where his main end-goal is to hurt people), is just peak manipulation...
... Which is awesome for a villain!
It's less awesome if you're standing on the Heroes' side and you're hearing about all the years of abuse that a colleague of yours put his family through, for the first time. I want to note that not a single Hero, till now, has said that they do not believe Dabi (not that I recall, at least). I saw one comment on Tumblr saying they didn't like that Best Jeanist used the word "dirty laundry", the chapter before, but I don't think the Hero said it in disrespect. I think it had more to do with Dabi's intentions behind revealing his truth, than Best Jeanist not believing him, or worse, dismissing him as a victim. Dabi's truth was called "dirty laundry" because Tōya didn't use it to seek justice, for himself and his family, but rather to get revenge on everyone, to create chaos and to excuse his own criminal actions. It's a truth tainted by hatred, not in the sense that fans of the manga and the Heroes should just forget about it: his past and pain are very, very real and Dabi and the rest of the villains need help. But the Heroes cannot take the time to feel sorry for their enemies, right at this moment, because if they do, that's the end. That's kinda what happened between Toga and Uraraka: she needs to stop Toga because while hurting people might come natural to the villain, that's not a healthy way to live. Toga didn't ask to be the way she is, and as a Hero, it should be Uraraka's job to give her the chance to get the treatment she didn't get as a child, that would teach Toga how to deal with her natural urges in a way that is not harmful to anyone. Mind you, Toga didn't seem to like the idea of conforming herself to anyone else's expectations, so she might not want the therapy. Uraraka would still need to give her all to stop the villain, no matter how sorry she actually feels inside for her.
If the villains win, the Heroes will not be able to rectify their society. Only after this fight ends and villains are taken into custody, it would be safe for the Heroes to show their honest reactions to Dabi's revelation. Only then we can hope to see them caring for the villains' health and their truths and possibly demand that Endeavor turns himself in (I actually want him to do so on his own, without external input). The Heroes aren't being heartless, if that's what some villain stans are thinking. They simply do no have the luxury to let Dabi's words manipulate them into feeling bad for him during a fight, because innocent people's lives are at stake here and just because Tōya had a horrible childhood, it doesn't mean that he's gonna care and let those innocent people be. Dabi wants to see the WHOLE world burn.
Onto Deku, now, the second character in two weeks accused by some, of being an abuse apologist.
He's the first character EVER to confront Endeavor on his treatment of Shōto, after seeing how his own classmate was spiralling and hurting himself, because Shōto didn't want to use HIS OWN Quirk to prevent himself from quite literally freeze to death, all because of Endeavor's abuse.
Deku has always wanted to follow All Might's steps and like All Might, he wishes to be able to save everyone in need. Toshinori, however, already told him that that's not realistic and Deku accepted the fact that he can only save the people in need that he's able to reach and as we saw with Shōto, Kota and Eri, he's ready to lay out his own life and break every single bone in his body to do so. He's so determined to save people, even against the worst of odds, that he can twist fate. I think it's exactly this determination of his that made him speak out this time, not only for Shōto, but for Endeavor, too. Do I like that Deku cares? Yes, I'm glad that people like Deku exist, people that genuinely care and wish and pray for criminals to regret what they've done so they can have a chance to right their wrongs and become a better person. Do I think Deku would stop Endeavor from turning himself in or defend Endeavor in front of the other Heroes so they don't take him away and bring him to justice? I might be wrong, Horikoshi can still make a fool out of me, but I don't think so. Deku knows the years of abuse are there and they will never go away. Deku is also the guy who told off Natsuo for trying to make Shōto feel resentful towards their father, when Shōto was somewhat past that and only wanted to heal. Deku recognized that the siblings have all different ways to deal with trauma and told Natsuo that his feelings are valid, but he can't push them onto Shōto, because Shōto's feelings on the matter are just as valid, even if they don't align with those of his big brother.
Just like villain stans can feel compassion towards Dabi because of his past, while being repulsed by his criminal actions in the present, Deku can feel repulsed by Endeavor's abuse of his own family and still see that a part of him (no matter how little it is) wishes to be a better human being. Deku didn't say that Endeavor should be automatically forgiven for his past actions, no one can deny that the abuse still has serious repercussions for every Todoroki involved (yes. EVERY). But the thing with Deku is that once he's seen this tiny, barely-even-there, light in you, he will fight to save you. I don't think that the people calling Deku an abuse apologist are giving his intuition or insight enough credit.
Dabi's not Endeavor: this means that Deku hasn't seen anything in this fight that might hint to Tōya wanting to be saved. Again, the same thing happened between Toga and Uraraka. And sadly, even Twice and Hawks (Hawks miscalculated sooo bad there). It's unfortunate that phrases like "you can only save someone if they want to be saved" and "you cannot help someone who refuses to be helped" still apply to this world, but that's the ugly truth and I'm sure that to someone like Deku that's a very hard and bitter pill to swallow. Endeavor said he wants to right his wrongs: in my opinion, he's still got a lot of work to do, since he should have really started it all off by being honest to everyone about his actions and let justice do its course. During this battle I'm forced to recognize (like Deku does) that Endeavor might actually be able to reedem himself, after actually atoning for his crimes. I cannot say the same for Dabi, because he doesn't want to atone for the bad things he has done. I didn't see Deku's speech as him excusing Endeavor's abuse to his victim or conceding the point to Tōya, that Heroes don't care about villains. I saw it as Deku telling Dabi to stop using his own abuse as an excuse to hurt other victims (Shōto, Natsuo, Fuyumi and Rei) because as harsh as it sounds, Tōya can't demand compassion for his own pain while being uncapable of showing compassion to his own little brother. Maybe Tōya doesn't actually know everything that Shōto has suffered through, maybe he thinks that his little brother got lucky with his Quirk and didn't have it as bad as he did. That's not his place to say. Dabi is making a contest out of their family's pain, trying to declare which Todoroki got it worse (clearly believing that it's him and that that allows him to do whatever he wants to, now), so I reiterate: he can't ask for compassion in the middle of the battle and the Heroes are actually doing the right thing, not letting themselves being manipulated like that and basically forfeiting the fight.
AFTER this arc ends, I truly hope to see the Heroes showing their compassion for the villains. I hope they would get rid of that obnoxious Hero Ranking and that the society would stop festering the idea that only certain Quirks and their users are strong and valuable and deserving of a voice. I hope they could change their world so that people like Tenko, Tōya, Jin, Himiko and Shuichi are able to ask for help AND BE HELPED before it is too late.

Not sure how to word this ask. Why do you think people tend to miss the point of Shigaraki's role in MHA? I've read people thinking that Shigaraki is a crappy villain and the main villain should have been either Stain or Chisaki. People also seem to be against any redemption for Shigaraki. It's fine that they have a preference, I'm just confused on why they don't understand Shigaraki's narrative role in the story?
Pt. 2: I hope my ask made sense. I may be a bit biased because for me personally, Shigaraki and then later Dabi and the Todorokis were the reason I continued to watch MHA.
No worries, Anon! So, hilariously, I would agree that my emotional investment in BNHA is pretty much the Todorokis and Shigaraki/League of Villains.
That said, it doesn’t surprise me, and there are lots of cultural reasons why (I presume you’re talking by and large about the western fandom) and also universal psychological think patterns that explain it, too.
Western fandoms always react this way to victimized antagonists set up for redemption, from Mutsuki in Tokyo Ghoul to Kylo Ren in Star Wars, and keep in mind that Kylo is extremely similar to Shigaraki in backstory. On one hand, you have purists screaming that Kylo/Shigaraki are completely 100% evil and can never be redeemed, they’ve made their final choice, that’s it, how dare you sympathize with them and if the narrative clearly does sympathize with them, you’re trying to humanize villains who are monsters and not human to begin with! And on the other, you have rabid fanboys screaming that they’re too weak in comparison to villains like Chisaki or Stain or Darth Vader, and by “too weak,” they mean that they have emotions and struggle to contain them (and, to be honest, there is an element of sexism here in that strong emotions beyond specifically cold, methodical anger are traditionally associated with femininity).
These characters don’t exist in the black and white of a comfortable morality play, which ironically throughout history people tend to flock towards despite claiming that they don’t. In reality, there is comfort in assuming the monsters and evil people are those, and not us or the people we love, and that we are good, and could never become a villain. People apply this to fiction as well, and still seem to want to believe either you are born bad or good, or at least for stories to portray that kind of simplistic thinking. It’s a defense mechanism, to be honest, giving the illusion of protecting yourself, but it’s only an illusion. Very few people think they are the villains in their stories.
Concerning western cultures, and specifically Anglo-American in that... we have a secular Calvinism (the notion of being born good or evil) that saturates our culture. There are almost no redemption stories in western fiction, and the only one I can think of that doesn’t end in death is Zuko’s, and he didn’t do that much wrong to begin with. However, redemption, or just the absence of the notion that people are born good or evil (because there isn’t always a good/bad side) is very, very common in Asian media, specifically manga and anime.
To bring it back to BNHA specifically, let’s look at what the story’s options are (and I do believe both Shigaraki and Dabi will be redeemed and, at this point, I’ve no reason to think they won’t survive):
For Dabi specifically, you can either go good victim/bad victim in which Shouto puts his brother down, or in which Endeavor puts the son he abused into becoming a villain down. Even if you go with Shouto doing it, then you still have to face the question of why Endeavor could be redeemed, why Shouto could forgive his father, forgive his mother, but not his older brother who suffered perhaps the most under their father. If Dabi ends up being put down, that is by and large, thanks to Endeavor’s redemption, a disgusting message.
For Shigaraki, you have all the characters who we recognize as actually heroic (All Might) wanting to save him, and character whom we’ve already seen as problematic and in every way emblematic of the old hero system (Gran Torino) saying he’s beyond salvation--while you already have the hero system being called out in each and every way by Twice, Hawks, etc. What is the point of an optimistic story about heroes putting down a character who is extremely mentally ill and coded as an abuse victim all his life, to the point where we know he was looking for a hero to save him and only a villain did? It doesn’t fit with the optimism of the story at all. If Deku is born without a quirk and mistreated for it, what about those mistreated for their quirks? Isn’t the point Deku’s heroic heart--which Shigaraki once shared?
I’m personally not expecting Hori to be perfect in how he executes the story or these arcs, but I do think he’s clearly set up the groundwork for redemption in both of these characters’ cases.

The Turquoise Eyed Boy
The Turquoise Eyed Boy by Sensationalcrazyna
Touya Todoroki, son of Endeavour, the No.2 hero, gets into the prestigious hero school Yuuei. He got in based on recommendations of course, but with his quiet nature, most people think that's the reason he got in. Not because he deserved it, rather because Endeavour was a well - known hero, that he had special perks that came with it that others didn't.
Everyone thought that way, but not Keigo Takami.
Keigo is a fun loving boy with a quirk people always extremely underestimate. "All you can do is fly and lose feathers, right?" they would ask, and Keigo would just laugh, and give them a shit - eating grin when they saw just how powerful he really was. He had seen the quiet boy, and only knew that his name was Touya Todoroki because of the fact that everyone knew who he was because well, his dad was fucking Endeavour. That, and the fact that they had to do a mandatory introduction about themselves to the class.
One thing that drew him in was his eyes. Those eyes that always seemed to harbour no emotion.
He would change that.
