Dearest Lady of the Manners,
I hope this will find you well. I'm facing the self-imposed task of creating a Gothique for dummies playlist for the local queer association. I was wondering if you would be so kind to offer me your wisdom and maybe suggest a couple of songs that you would consider necessary to include, bonus point if not very known or not English-sung.
Thanks in advance for your consideration.
May the demons that haunt you always be of the fun kind instead of the migraine-y type.
Ooooh, what a great question! I can't think of any "not English-sung" songs, drat it all, but as for other songs that may not be as well-known for this sort of thing ...
Gingerbread Coffin - Rasputina
This Girl Called Harmony - Attrition
Gutter Glitter - Switchblade Symphony (You'd think this would be well-known, but I have had DJs look at me blankly when I request it.)
Ribbons - Sisters of Mercy (The previous aside also applies here.)
The Carny of Mr. Dark - Deathwatch Beetle Repairman
White Rabbit (cover) - Collide
Exterminating Angel - The Creatures
Face to Face - Siouxsie and the Banshees (Written by Danny Elfman!)
Cry Little Sister - Gerard McMahon (From The Lost Boys soundtrack, and again, you would think it was well-known, but apparently not everyone thinks of it as a goth song. They would be wrong.)
Okay, peeps, chime in with your suggestions!

Took a break to doodle a silly thing. Me, split into 4 along my music/style preferences! I tried to find other colors but these just worked so well. These are some of my favorite songs in the groupings and outfits I actually own.
Crimson: yes, like blood. Most of what I wear and listen to is on the goth side of things.
Spring: like spring green! I admittedly do not have much or often wear this kind of style, but I do have some brighter colors and cutesy things for rare occasions. I balance that out recently by listening to a lot of bright Jpop and Kpop.
Phthalo: like phthalo blue!! This is my vintage style. I have several outfits in 1920s and 1960s style, and really enjoy music from both those time periods too. Recently very into tiki and surf rock.
Lilac: because "Violet" is taken, ha. This is my nerd/artist style and taste, which is a rather big portion of myself. This would mostly be soundtrack music and the more casual outfits I have.

I hate how people will look at popular indie artists who had one or two songs go viral on TikTok and start making fun of anybody who listens to them. "Oh you listen to Lemon Demon, Will Wood, Jack Stauber, Glass Animals, and Mother Mother? Tsk, don't you know that is stupid TikTok neurodivergent white transmasc preteen music? It's so mid and bad you should listen to real music–" you are a pit of misery

this is just my opinion but i think any good media needs obsession behind it. it needs passion, the kind of passion that's no longer "gentle scented candle" and is now "oh shit the house caught on fire". it needs a creator that's biting the floorboards and gnawing the story off their skin. creators are supposed to be wild animals. they are supposed to want to tell a story with the ferocity of eating a good stone fruit while standing over the sink. the same protective, strange instinct as being 7 and making mud potions in pink teacups: you gotta get weird with it.
good media needs unhinged, googling-at-midnight kind of energy. it needs "what kind of seams are invented on this planet" energy and "im just gonna trust the audience to roll with me about this" energy. it needs one person (at least) screaming into the void with so much drive and energy that it forces the story to be real.
sometimes people are baffled when fanfic has some stunning jaw-dropping tattoo-it-on-you lines. and i'm like - well, i don't go here, but that makes sense to me. of fucking course people who have this amount of passion are going to create something good. they moved from a place of genuine love and enjoyment.
so yeah, duh! saturday cartoons have banger lines. random street art is sometimes the most precious heart-wrenching shit you've ever seen. someone singing on tiktok ends up creating your next favorite song. youtubers are giving us 5 hours of carefully researched content. all of this is the impossible equation to latestage capitalism. like, you can't force something to be good. AI cannot make it good. no amount of focus-group testing or market research. what makes a story worth listening to is that someone cares so much about telling it - through dance, art, music, whatever it takes - that they are just a little unhinged about it.
one time my friend told me he stayed up all night researching how many ways there are to peel an orange. he wrote me a poem that made me cry on public transportation. the love came through it like pith, you know? the words all came apart in my hands. it tasted like breakfast.

You’ve met Trent Reznor?? Please please tell us more
AHAHAHAHAHA. I met him very briefly one evening.
~ sets the Wayback Machine to October 1995 in New Orleans ~
A friend's band were going to perform at Anne Rice's Vampire Ball, and my friend invited me to come visit. I had gone through a horrible break up that summer, and it sounded like the perfect thing to distract myself.
My friend's band and I stayed with another local band, and I spent almost the entire trip watching both bands performing in tiny NOLA clubs. The night they played the "biggest" club was the night that Trent Reznor was hanging out with a bunch of friends (including, IIRC, Marilyn Manson, but I stayed the hell away from him).
Anyways, I ended up going to the bar at the same time as Trent, and while waiting in line we made idle chit-chat about goth/industrial/fetish scenes in different areas. He came across as someone who was trying not to succumb to social anxiety; very sweet, a little nervous, and probably waiting for some drugs to kick in. He also came across as ... look, I've been on the fringes of the kink scene for years. I have friends who are much more active (or are pros), and even I could tell that Dominant was not Trentlet's preferred scene.
Again, very sweet guy. I wish I'd gotten to talk to him more, but his pack of Cool Friends swooped in and took him away.

Today on the list of "good stuff that happened": I got to tell my brother about how Percy Jackson in the Son of Neptune is absolutely insane and spends basically the whole book just making the Romans go "?!"
Highlights include exploded water cannons during war games, showing up carrying a goddes and tearing apart furies with a whirlpool, mouthing off to Mars, third-wheeling/babysitting the precious young smoll inexperienced beans that are Frazel, willingly drinking Maybe Poison, and generally breaking a lot of things by Fighting Like a Greek. Continued to explain that the best part about the multiple perspectives in these books is this:
Percy: I'm a loser, lol! I have no idea what I'm doing, also everyone is cooler than me and I'd die for them! Also Annabeth is cute when she's threatening people with a knife.
Annabeth: *while planning 6 steps ahead* Percy is an idiot. Dear gods I love him so much. Such a wonderful idiot.
Literally everyone else: Percy is (one of) the most powerful demigod(s) I've ever heard of, and he gives no shits about any rules anymore. This man is scary and dangerous and I am so glad he's on my side. Annabeth is a terrifying force to behold and I can't keep up with her. I am unsure if them being so in love with each other makes it better or worse. If they ever turn evil, we are so fucked.

My actual favorite part of wisdom saga is telemachus trying to lean against Athena (he thought about that for .03 seconds and then was like nah !!! :D she's my friend not the goddess of war!!! Good to see that the audacity is running strong in odysseus's family) and then just passed threw her and fell on the floor. And then Athena did not move at all!!! And just stood there looking at him.

The Leading Man
I love how after watching Nightmare Time, TGWDLM implies that all the powerhouses of Hatchetfield were infected before the CCRP crew (also that Pokey plays favorites)
