The Old Guard is a 2020 American superhero film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, based on his comic book of the same name. The film stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

I hadn't done so before. I just took a quick pass at doing so, but only among the biggest fandoms on AO3 as of Jan 2024 (ones with over 10K public works at that time). I sorted them by the size of their biggest ship relative to the size of the fandom. This gives us a bunch of very big fandoms with a high % of works tagged with a particular ship:

This is based on January 2024 data. Some things may have changed!

Not all these works are necessarily about these ships. Especially in the cases where the ships are canon, they may often be tagged as background ships.

There are undoubtedly many smaller AO3 fandoms that have higher percentages devoted to the top ship.

I removed some highly overlapping fandoms (e.g., Good Omens book fandom).

This is AO3 data only, and (as always!) AO3 does not represent fandom overall. In particular, ship popularity tends to vary A LOT by archive/platform. also, on the subject of the old guard, i realized my perception of copley's wall has changed completely since i first watched the film in 2020.

like, when i first watched it, i thought the significance was that somehow, andromache had this knack for saving precisely the people who would go forth and do incredible things. and that that was part of the movie magic/the magic of her immortality.

this time, i could only see it as: "well obviously, if you save that many people, many of them will go on to change and repair the world. that's simply how people are."

that feels so much clearer to me now. i'm not sure what's changed, or how i've changed, but it was cool to notice.

But then, out of nowhere, he’ll do something totally unexpected, like laugh at one of Joe’s terrible jokes, or place an atrocious bet against Booker sans prompt, or agree to do something fuckstupid just because Joe asked him at the right moment.

In which Joe's been immortal for six months; a long stakeout with Nicky provides him with an opportunity to reflect.

so. y'all might remember the post i made a while back asking y'all your favourite tog cast movies because i love arbitrary data collection. this was in the long ago era before polls were a thing, and now with experience of running one silly bracket under my belt, i have decided to do the same thing, but in tournament form this time. and we're starting with the one i feel most qualified to chime in on, but i DO plan to run the others once this is done depending on how it goes. so with all that said, allow me to introduce:
