five comfort characters five tags
Tagged by @lipstickmata <3 <3 <3.
Not 100% sure what comfort characters are, but I'll just take a crack at it assuming it means "I was or am extremely fixated on them and/or I just think they're neat." Trying to avoid massive spoilers, but there may be some minor ones despite my efforts...
Nero tol Scaeva (Final Fantasy XIV) I am pretty sure my first comment upon seeing Nero in RR was "Who is this loser? Looks like a worthless midboss that won't even make it to the end of the game," and boy was I wrong (about making it -- 100% he's a loser and worthless midboss). Now, 4 expacs later, he's my forever baby girl thanks to his incredible arrogance, sassy mouth, and "uncomfortably in love with Cid while also being divorced from Cid"-ness...
Revolver Ocelot (Metal Gear Solid) Ocelot is the OG "war criminal loser who is completely amoral outside of being wholly devoted to a single person, for whom he'd give up everything" so I obviously love him for the same reasons I love Nero. Every time Ocelot shows up in an MGS game, it brightens my day even as it makes the day of everyone around him worse <3. Meow.
Akemi Homura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) Hmm...looks like we're just on the "loser who will burn down the whole world to save the one person she loves" train, but it's a good train and I like it here! I wasn't a fan of the movie's take, but Homura's characterization (and magical girl powers) in the original show is simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. Is it too much to ask that Homura be happy forever? No, I think it's not.
Sam Vimes (Discworld) I started with the Rincewind books, and while I do love them (and the academia references have only become more real to me over the years), imo the Nightwatch books are the heart of Discworld (yes, even more than the Death books, yes, I know this is contentious). Vimes is such a wonderful combination of rage, cynicism, kindness, and an unwavering adherence to justice.
Trico (Last Guardian) It's probably more fair to say all of the Team ICO games are comfort games, but a special shout out to Trico, who is the cutest kitty-bird-monster of all time despite eating those naughty, forbidden Trico Treats. I definitely had to lie down for a long time after finishing Last Guardian, and I was already emotionally prepared for having to lie down after finishing any Team ICO game ^o^;;
Not sure who wants to be tagged, so tagging @illuminesce, @songofkeys, @thistleburr, @penquinlori, and @poor-punctuation but feel free to ignore if you don't wanna play!

Haven’t been in tag games in ages but ey :D Cheers, @spicyspearmint
Too lazy to tag people myself, whoever feels like doing this, grab on -w-
The Rules: Tag (9) people you want to know better and/or catch up with, then answer the following:
Four ships: Ok so the first one is niche as fuck because it’s one of the first ships I ever got into. Blacksquaredshipping (Nate/Hilbert) from Pokemon BW/B2W2. I put way too much time into that one, still kinda have feelings for it. Sorry about the slowburn fic I never finished OTL.
Secondlyyyy. I guess House/Wilson from House MD? Mostly because I randomly found a real good fic about them recently and look, I like the banter, just can’t stand the show itself these days due to knowing too much about how healthcare works OTL
3: Homura/Sayaka from Madoka Magica. Shit just has some untapped potential. Both of them need a hug asap actually.
4: Ok listen. Listen. Don’t judge me on this one it started as a meme but. Farengar/Paarthurnax from Skyrim. IT WAS A MEME. IT WAS JUST A JOKE FIC IDEA AT FIRST BUT I FELL TOO DEEP AND NOW I KINDA LIKE IT???? I need to write the damn fic. Then you’ll see. You’ll all see.
Last song: All For Nothing from Arcane Soundtrack yeah I like emotional turmoil :)
Currently reading: random fanfics. I lack the ability to read books rn. OTL
Last movie:  The Menu. Loved it, good shit. :D
Craving: pistachios! :D luckily I have a bag lol

Finished rewatching Maoka Magica, thoughts below
Having finished a rewatch of madoka magica I think the reason it holds up so well as a "dark subversion" of the magical girl genre is because it doesn't actually stop being whimsical and genuine ironically enough. It never shows gore or excessive horror and even in its most dark moments it doesn't dwell on it and its only about 3 to 4 moments in the whole show that it goes that far, and gives it an appropriate amount of respect to the emotional impact it has on its characters without turing the whole show into a downer. Beyond that it's remarkably simple in its execution all in all. (It got kinda tiring how often madoka cried for me personally, but it was refreshing seeing how like, a normal teenager would react to the situations compared to other shows that have protags go through 1 million traumatizing events and act unaffected afterwards)
Other than that it's almost entirely committed to telling a tragedy about love and hope in the face of a grim and jaded world and how innocence is bashed against it without sympathy to those it hurts. It's pretty simple and overt with how it presents those themes but it never feels out of place I feel partly because of the extreme lengths the show goes to present itself with a overtly whimsical play aesthetic with its incorporation of collage based visuals and real world materials inside an almost MC Escher like city with a lot of focus on depicting it's scenes and characters with as much visual metaphor and beauty as possible rather than choosing to depict a purely real or grounded setting to go with its themes of losing innocence and despair.
And it fits perfectly because its a story that whole the ending is still bitter sweet, is still about hope and love conquering all, even a cold and unfeeling universe. And I think that's why I can't stop thinking about it's visuals so many years later.
Although my favorite part of the series is the sequel movie Rebellion and that has a story that recontextualizes the whole series as it plays out and while it's more tragic than hopeful it's manages to stay totally in line with the original series and it's one of the rare cases where I've seen a sequel to a beloved franchise stick the landing because it chooses to take what was there in the first installment and expand and evolve on it with its decision to focus on the themes of doing something selfish to do something good that was there in the anime and following them to their natural conclusions, like "is madoka happy now that she's an abstract concept who isn't remembered by anyone?" And "what did going through all those time loops do to homura when she wasn't able to protect the person she loved?" And tackling them in the same surreal and magical setting while cranking it up to 11.
I'm hoping the next movie can wrap this up in a way that's satisfactory because it's very hard to follow up something that shaked up the status quo so severely and successfully pay off all the character arcs they set up. It makes me hesitant to really want a sequel because while the ending to Rebellion wasn't "happy" it still felt really satisfying to me. Oh well, that's enough talk about magical girl shows out of me. Gonna go and listen to some kalifina now, kyubey can get bent

PINNED.
rules.
1. Please don’t harass me for threads! I have several other RP blogs, along with my mental health meaning that I can have difficulty staying motivated at times. I will try and stay active and reply to threads as best I can, but know that you might not always get a reply quickly or immediately. However, you’re always welcome to ask how things are going - just be respectful, and we’ll be fine. 2. This blog is mutuals-only, meaning I only interact with mutuals. I’m often quite busy with real life and I have several blogs to keep up with, and I want writing here to be as stress-free as possible. If I don’t write with you, it’s nothing against you personally, I promise. All of that said, please don’t be shy! If I’m following you, you can take that as confirmation that I’m interested in writing with you. 3. I have the right to drop threads for any reason. I will try to avoid this as much as possible (especially when we’re both invested and enjoying the thread), and I’ll let you know if I’m doing so, but ultimately I don’t know what could happen. Similarly, if you’re not feeling a thread for any reason, let me know - don’t force yourself to write something you’re not interested in! We can always try something new or take a break entirely if that’s what you’d prefer. 4. I won’t be writing any kind of smut on this blog, including in any adult verses I make for Madoka.
5. The muse of this blog originates from an anime that contains lots of potentially triggering content, and themes you might find on this blog include death, violence, suicide, depression, PTSD, and other horror-based concepts. I’ll tag for everything as best as I can, but let me know if you have any specific triggers before interacting with me so I can tag them/be more vigilant about tagging them.
6. This blog is not spoiler free for Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and spoilers will not be tagged. On the other hand, I’m only familiar with the original anime and the Rebellion movie at this point, and I know very little about Magia Record and PMMM’s sidestories. If you have a muse who comes from Record, I’ll likely look into the game/show more in order to properly characterize our muses’ relationship, but please keep this in mind before following.
7. Let me know if you have any problems with me or our RP! I’m more than happy to try and work out any problems, whether it’s related to my writing or anything else - but for that to happen, I obviously need to know about it. You’re always free to talk me about any problems in private, no matter how small. I guarantee I’ll be glad you approached me! And that should be pretty much it. Feel free to ask if anything here isn’t clear or you have any questions!

Hi! Just saw Wulpurgisnacht trailer and found this cool video analysis of trailer: Madoka Magica Movie 4 In Depth Analysis | Homura's Lizard, Sayaka's Bandages and Walpurgisnacht by Karma on youtube. They seem to think that one Homura in trailer is the witch that took her form and the other is the real one. What are your thoughts?
I honestly have no idea. I'm trying to avoid theory trailers and stuff so I can watch the movie completely blind (of course I'll probably change my mind once spoilers come out or if I see a cool theory, so. who knows.)

Homura Akemi Knew Her Fate
Hmmm... Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion was released back in 2013. Welp, better late than never I suppose.
Okay, I've watched the movie twice and the ending scene about 4-6 times alone and I have some thoughts.
For me, I strongly believe Homura knew what was going to happen at the end of Rebellion. She knew she was going to turn into a demon and give into her selfish desires. I think this mainly because of her lines and my adamant discussion in my head that she isn't an entirely bad person. She knew what she was doing, but she knew that before it happened and knew it was bad of her. I think of this mainly because of her comments throughout the whole ending battle scene and when Madoka reaches out to her to break out of the shell.
"Mami Tomoe and Kyoko Sakura are both here, I believe in them."
"This world will be my grave."
"No! You don't understand! I have to DIE HERE!"
"I'm so sorry! I'm so weak, I just wanted you back with me..."
"I'd commit the greatest sin for one more chance, even if it turns me into a monster."
Tumblr media
Homura knew, she probably didn't intend for it to happen. She probably never intended to let that happen. Throughout the movie and during her confrontation with Kyubey, she accepted Madoka's choice and refused to let Kyubey get to her. She even told Madoka she knew she would have the strength to make that decision again. She accepted Madoka's fate and she'd rather die than let Madoka's wish be in vain.
However, much like how Homura's time loop increased Madoka's karmic destiny to become a magical girl, it also increased Homura's as well. Specifically her desire and desperation to save her.
Every failed loop, Madoka's karmic destiny to become a magical girl increased. Every failed loop, Homura's desire to prevent that also increased.
Madoka's karmic destiny reaching a peak and allowing her to become a god in turns means Homura's looping time had her own karmic destiny reach its peak. Making her desires and desperation to prevent Madoka's fate result in her turning into a demon. It lines up, and despite what Homura does, perhaps once she started that loop, she and Madoka are now fated to exist as opposites.
Madoka's hope to help everyone she can, despite the risk she puts herself in. And Homura's despair of failing to stop her every single time.
Homura didn't come to this conclusion until near the end of Rebellion when she confronted Kyubey. When she realized this, that's why she was terrified of being saved. She was desperate to be killed. She knew she needed to die so the demonic half of her wouldn't be birthed. In Kyubey's words, the demon would've died before it hatched. If the demon half of her couldn't escape, then she couldn't have done anything to Madoka. If Homura somehow knew she would be too corrupt to be saved, it could be another reason why she wished to die inside the soul gem.
It's… ironic in a sense, Homura tried so hard to change Madoka's fate, that when it came to her own, she accepted her death and was terrified when that fate was being averted. She didn't want to be saved, she didn't want to hurt Madoka, she knew what she was going to do and was scared of it.
When she awoke in the real world and when Madoka came for her. Homura wasn't there anymore. It was the demon and only the demon.
Homura had fallen victim to her desires that have strengthened over the course of all of her time loops.
Like she said at the end, she is now a concept called "Evil". Homura's existence died when she broke her soul gem and turned it into that crown. Just like how Madoka stopped existing and became the "Law of Cycles". Or perhaps Homura stopped existing right after Madoka saved her in the labyrinth.
"Are you scared?"
"I'm fine… I'm ready now."
That could have been Homura's last words. At least the entity known as Homura Akemi had ceased to exist at that moment.
Tumblr media
Madoka and the Law of Cycles had become split. All thanks to the concept of "Evil", who's original form died a short while ago… Her soul gem was far too corrupted and filled with karmic destiny for the Law of Cycles to purify.
"Evil" may be happy with the outcome, fulfilling Homura Akemi's original desire. But the being known as Homura Akemi had once again failed. She had ceased to exist with her original wish cursing everyone around her. Madoka become “Hope” and Homura became “Despair”.
**~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~*~*
Hm~ Perhaps a route to be taken could be trying to “split” Homura from “Evil”, Much like how she tore the part that was Madoka Kaname from the Law of Cycles. Perhaps someone could try to tear Homura Akemi from “Evil”.

So, with the new Madoka Magica thing coming, I watched Rebellion again, and was reminded of how interesting and thematically rich the weird, surreal transformation sequences from that movie are.
So I looked up some people’s analyses of the sequence, and those analyses were, you know, really bad. Luckily, I’m a relaxed person who can let things go and doesn’t feel the burning need to waste a lot of time analysing a one-and-a-half minute sequence from an eight year old movie.
...
...
1) Mami.
Mami is really straightforward. As the transformation sequence starts, she’s doing an ice dance, a kind of dance that strives to create the impression of free movement, grace, and creative expression but which is actually governed by incredibly rigid rules, not unlike how Mami attempts to foster an external presentation of effortless, free-spirited grace, while binding herself to a rigid code of behaviour.
As she moves into her final spin, she folds up one leg, forming the shape of a grief seed, which her magical girl form tears its way out of, breaking her back open as it goes. This is some incredibly literal symbolism: For Mami, who made her wish solely to escape death while the rest of her family died and later threw herself into being a magical girl, her magical girl persona literally tore its way out of her grief, breaking the person she was before.
Her back breaking also ties back to her death in the series, as Bebe crushed her in its jaws.
2) Kyoko.
Kyoko has an excitable, fast-paced dance to pretty straightforwardly represent her excitable, wild personality. As the sequence goes on, she sprouts a multitude of arms, waving about her, in what is almost certainly a reference to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. Apart from referencing Kyoko’s selfless wish to help her father, and her act of mercy-killing Sayaka, Guanyin was typically conflated with the Virgin Mary, with statues of Mary disguised as Guanyin and a cult of 'Maria Kannon’ having formed around her at one point. Giving that her father was apparently a priest excommunicated for heresy, it’s entirely plausible that heresy was the veneration of Maria Kannon.
Next we see a man’s hand reach for Kyoko’s face. This is almost certainly Kyoko’s father’s hand, reaching for her either in affection or in anger after killing the rest of their family. We see Kyoko split into multiple images, referencing her now lost power of duplicating herself, before the scene is torn open by a demonic, red-eyed, terrifying looking Kyoko. This is the one bit of symbolism in this sequence that has me completely stumped. A representation of how Kyoko sees herself, maybe? Or perhaps a representation of how her father saw her.
3) Sayaka.
Winning the prize for ‘least disturbing,’ we’ve got Sayaka, who kicks off her transformation by break-dancing, as coloured silhouettes mimic her movements at a slight time delay. The break-dancing itself is just a reference to her athleticism, but what’s interesting is that some of the silhouettes occasionally flicker to black with spots of oily colour, the pattern of a soul gem just before it becomes a Witch, referencing Sayaka’s fate in the original timeline of becoming the Witch Oktavia.
As the transformation ends, a silhouette of Sayaka as a schoolgirl sprints (with perfect form, again referencing her athleticism) at a silhouette of herself as a magical girl, the two colliding and splattering like water. There’s a general running theme of water in this one, referencing Oktavia again. As the two colours mix, a liquid version of Sayaka as a magical girl emerges, and for a split-second we see her cry into her hands, representing her regret at becoming a magical girl.
This one is almost as simple as Mami’s, all told.
4) Homura.
The most symbolically rich and also probably the most disturbing. As Homura starts, we see her holding her soul gem, which for a split-second flashes to an artistic representation of a scene later in the movie: The forest of lanterns that Homura and Kyoko end up passing through when they’re trying to leave town.
Homura’s dance is a ballet dance, representing how ... let me check my notes here ... she’s a ballet dancer. Like Sayaka, she has a silhouette following her at a time delay, but unlike Sayaka, her silhouette isn’t actually perfectly mimicking her movements, instead deviating at points. This is probably playing triple duty on the symbolism side: Homura is at this point both magical girl and Witch, both the original Homura and the new universe’s Homura, and is in two minds about what she wants to do.
As the transformation goes on, the white silhouette gets caught in a film reel, repeating her infinitely, while the purple silhouette is still and singular: The purple silhouette is the new universe’s Homura, while the white silhouette is the original timeline’s, repeating the same period of time over and over again.
We get another short shot of a future part of the film, this time the rising lanterns that lead up above the city, which will eventually be transformed into the arch and castle where Homura becomes a Witch.
This transitions to a silhouetted, yellow-eyed version of Homura (the ‘lizard-girl’ she figuratively becomes) bursting into patterns as Homura escapes from it, reaching for something, before transitioning to a pair of glowing hands grasping around a soul gem. The colour grading makes the soul gem look purple, making it look like Homura’s, but it’s actually not: Homura’s soul gem is visible on one of the glowing hands. This is actually Madoka’s soul gem that Homura is grasping at.
After a split-second shot of some very sinister witch text, we cut back to Homura, who segues into some more ballet moves before her striking her pose. These actually aren’t just any ballet moves, though: She’s dancing the death of Odette at the end of Swan Lake. At the end of Swan Lake, Odette dies and ascends to heaven, freeing the other swan maidens from the grip of Rothbart. It’s a very close match to someone’s story, but that someone is Madoka, not Homura: Homura’s mimicry of Madoka/Odette casts her in the role of Odile, the Black Swan (whose costume Homura wears as part of her devil attire later on in the movie), who imitates Odette and in doing so steals her purpose from her. This is some really heavy foreshadowing for the end of the movie.
5) Madoka.
Madoka’s dance is styled after the pop dances of idols, figuratively representing her as Homura’s ‘idol,’ (and potentially tying in to ideas of the artificiality of Jpop idols: This both is and isn’t Madoka, after all, it’s a mask that the real Madoka is wearing).
After the dance, the transformation cuts to the same film reel Homura was stuck in, but this time with an endless line of paper dolls of Madoka. This is pulling double duty for symbolism here: The dolls are both the many iterations of Madoka that Homura has seen in her time loops, and the infinite iterations of Madoka that exist in the moment of every magical girl becoming a Witch -- we actually see an almost identical scene elsewhere, in Ultimate Madoka’s transformation in Magia Record, with the key difference being those Madokas are real, whereas these ones are a chain of paper dolls, hinting at Homura’s view of those Madokas as being ‘not fully real.’ The Madoka she knew is gone, and Ultimate Madoka both is Madoka and is just a pale imitation.
We cut from there to grainy, close-up images of Madoka. The angle of these suggest that we’re seeing through someone’s eyes, and we are: These are Homura’s memories of the ‘real’ Madoka. As we watch, a glowing hand breaks through, shattering the images like a mirror. A lot of people have assumed this is Madoka’s hand, but it’s not: We’ve already seen this exact glowing hand, in Homura’s transformation, because it’s Homura’s hand, reaching for Madoka. As if to confirm this, behind the hand we see buzzing stripes of colours for just a moment: The same ever-shifting rainbow shades as Devil Homura’s eyes briefly turn.
Madoka is revealed, peering through her hands in a way that mimics the floating eyes of Kyubey outside the isolation field they’re all trapped in. Like Kyubey, Madoka is a godlike being who exists beyond the world that Homura has created here.
Whew. Okay, that’s all five. We get Bebe’s transformation later, and the symbolism there is that she likes cake and shit.

About Akarsha
Part 2! This is the same deal as my “About Diya” post, so you can press the hyperlinks to find the source with extra detail!
She is 5’4
Akarsha doesn’t expect Noelle to reciprocate her feelings, so she’s careful to always flirt with her in a way that can be construed as a joke.
She is Indian
Her birthday is 4/20
She is the second oldest of the Deke Squad
Akarsha didn’t realize Noelle overheard her outburst in the gym
She would play games like Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch with Min
Out of D.A.M.N. she is the only real hardcore anime fan
Now that she knows “Sakura”, “Yuki”, and Ester, she has weeb friends to talk about anime to
Akarsha is interested in STEM and becomes a software engineer
She would come out via a stupid bi joke
If she had a cat, she would name something better than “Nyaruto,” like “Speed Stank”
She actually cheats on tests, which weighs on her conscience (as seen in the auditorium). She stops later.
Her hair goes down about halfway between her shoulders and elbow. It looks less because she has fine hair. (See image in this link from Asks 20)
Her favorite movie would probably be an anime movie
She plays the shortstop position. Shortstop fields many balls, giving her many opportunities to mess up and invent new excuses
When angry, she tries to yell/argue, and ends up angry-crying. She uses humor to mask her feelings, so when she’s seriously upset, everything ends up coming to the surface at once.
She likes personality tests and quizzes like “Which Naruto character are you?”
Her personality type is ESFP
Akarsha is smart despite acting dumb, but doesn’t do well on tests (B+/A- is unfortunately considered not doing well in her environment)
She would not have pursued a friendship with Diya under normal circumstances
She became friends with Noelle by pranking her (see long details in Ask 13!)
She has known she was bi for about a year at the time of Butterfly Soup. Spending a lot of time on the Internet helped her awareness
Her dad’s sense of humor is similar to her, and her parents are “big weirdos” so they mostly get along (More details on her dad in Asks 14)
She is only fluent in English because her parents worried about her fitting in and only smoke to her in English
She knows a bit of Spanish from classes at school
Her parents pressure her to know her career and often brag to other parents of her smartness and successfulness
Because of this, she feels like she doesn’t have things together like she should and worries she is not smart and will end up as a failure
When sick, she milks it for sympathy and excuses for what she has done. She acts like she’s on her deathbed and looks pitiful. She also blows her nose with a loud honking noise.
She would not wear double denim
Her windbreaker was based on an image Brianna Lei found (see image in the link here)
Her family is Hindu
She is agnostic, but halfway goes along with it for her family. She eats beef.
She likes junk food like Twinkies, pizza, french fries, etc.
Her favorite cuisine is Mexican food, and her second-favorite is American food
She also likes California burritos, avocados, funnel cake, and Icees
Her favorite fruits are pineapple and kiwi
She and Min dare each other to eat ghost peppers
If she played D&D, she’d be a bard
She taught Noelle what seme meant because she was reading yaoi and it came up in conversation (See 16 for more details!)
Following her conversation with Noelle, she changed her chat name to YAOI SEME (as seen in-game)
She makes weed jokes but only does it rarely
In Overwatch, she is an ironic Torb main and a useless Sombra (see Asks 17 for more details!)
She considers herself a gamer
She likes DS games like Ace Attorney and is addicted to Maplestory
She likes a lot of Ace Attorney characters, but her favorite is Phoenix because she finds him relatable. If someone asks her, she will say it is Spark Bruschel (see image in Asks 17)
She has watched magical girl shows, and her favorite is Madoka Magica
Her posture is not that good
In songs that say Noelle (Teenage Dirtbag) and Noel (like in Christmas songs), Akarsha points it out saying, “It’s you Noelle”
Her surprised sprite is based off of Trucy’s surprised sprite from Ace Attorney. Brianna Lei loves how over-the-top it looks
She went as Guy Fieri for Halloween
During trick-or-treating, she jumped out at the group from behind bushes a few times (see Asks 18 for more details!)
She had a pet snail in elementary school, but accidentally killed it when she tried to wash it with shampoo. She still mourns it
She would not make cuck jokes
She is a middle child
During horror movies, she is jokey and tries to scare the others by grabbing their arms and appearing behind them during tense moments
She screams during horror movies (see more details in Ask 20!)
She goes far away to college, others would have to take a plane if they wanted to see her
Her taste in music is eclectic, with a variety of hip-hop, anime openings, etc.
That’s it! (●'◡'●)

What magical girls series are out right now ?
Hey there! The short answer is... :/// not a lot.
Healin Good Precure’s last episode is next Sunday, and will be followed up by Tropical Rogue Precure, plus the Healin Good Movie is set for March
Mewkledreamy is still airing at the moment
The Sailor Moon Dream Arc Movies 1 and 2 have just released in japan, and hopefully will find an easy way for a global release soon
I Guess? There’s a third season of  Seizei Ganbare! Mahou Shoujo Kurumi airing right now which is a parody series (4 minute episodes)
Next season, so in about 6-7 weeks,  Fairy Ranmaru: Anata no Kokoro Otasuke Shimasu starts which is a magical man series so take that how you will
Show by Rock really had more One character who fit the Magical Girl bill imo, but there’s another season of that on right now, and another series for Wixoss which is not a magical girl series but if you like Puella-level dark and card games, it’s a decent MG Adjacent series
America is also giving us Owl House and while the second season isn’t scheduled for a specific date yet, it is a fish out of water witch reversal series like Little Witch Academia and Tweeny Witches, rather than the classic ‘witch comes to human world’ plot of the earliest majokko series
Crunchyroll has also apparently finished High Guardian Spice which looked like a MG series to some from the trailer, but for dumb reasons the release is postponed until ???
Korea has Catch! Teenieping, and another season (series?) of Flowering Heart  년: 3기 - 우수하 구출 스토리
Miraculous Ladybug is still going
For live action, Police x Heroine Lovepatrina! is still airing at the moment and I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another Girl x Heroine series once that is complete.
Then for the future uhhh. There’s another season of Magia Record planned, Machikado Mazoku season 2, a third Yuki Yuna, a new Tokyo Mew Mew anime, and the Sailor Moon Crystal Stars ???adaptation all planned for... ?the future? And I would expect them to so a second season of Card Captor Sakura Clear Card when the manga wraps up
Oh and a second season of Etotama if you count that as a MG series? And Luminous Witches which is a more music leaning Strike Witches spin off? Still seems more MG than SW
It’s also the 10′th anniversary of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and they have a big ol website about with with. No real info on it but maybe? Perhaps? The big project for celebration is the follow up to the Rebellion movie? Maybe. Eventually. Maybe.
And then for manga except for the TMM special (not Au Lait) ending, I don’t think anything else has really changed from last year’s list of series
Of course. this is all a bit subjective since what Is a magical girl varies person to person (and country to country- do we mean Majokko or Henshin Heroine?). Generally, people are looking for The Aesthetics of fun outfits, Characters who are driven by helping people and/or bettering themselves (usually to become a good queen), and a Story that uses conflicts to improve the characters (be it a man vs self classic majokko episodic series, or a girls vs monsters sentai-inspired series) If you just want the aesthetics, there’s plenty of idol series like Aikatsu and PriPara which are still going strong. If you want a metaphorical story that feels MG even if the aesthetics aren’t, Wonder Egg Priority is very very good, as long as you look up the CW beforehand (suicide is the main theme).  And then if you want magical girl type characters in a non magical girl series, well, I don’t think there’s any like that at this moment, but they crop up often enough, with varying results.
So uhh. Yep. There are the current and upcoming series. If I missed any, feel free to drop a line!

Wondaria is all kinds of interesting and I wish it was a real place! I'd love to hear some trivia about it; y'know, like the inspirations behind it and everything.
I'm so glad that you love my fantasy world, Anon! And I agree with you; I wish it were real, too!
Anyways, let's answer your question, shall we?
1. What's In A Name?
The world's name, Wondaria, is a reference to Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland, one of my all-time favourite fairy tales. Unfortunately, this beloved story is also a victim to the grimdarkness disease, being constantly and erroneously associated to drug trips and mental illnesses, completely missing the entire point of the original story.
2. Subversion Done Right
Wondaria's Magi System, as shocking as it may be, it was heavily inspired by Puella Magi Madoka Magica and its spiritual successors, Yuki Yuna is a Hero and Magical Girl Raising Project. Unlike its original products, the Magi System doesn't demonize humans for wanting to use their magic, and those who use it are morally grey (meaning that while they have good intentions, they will break the rules constantly).
3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Also, the labeling "Magi", even though is a shortened term for "Magical Guardian" in my canon, it's in reality a gender neutral recycled/borrowed term of "Puella Magi", since its original canon doesn't even bother using it. "Puella" means "Girl" in latin, but not everyone identifies as such, so it became just "Magi"!
4. Help Wanted
Even though we already have the newcomer Magilumiere Co. Ltd., Wondaria's Magi System was born from another whimsical previous alternative: Bee & PuppyCat. The wondarian system also acts as a career that rewards you with money for a job well done, helping to make ends meet.
5. Magic & Mundane
Wondaria's vibes are heavily inspired on two fantasy worlds: The Magic Dimension (Winx Club) and Crystal Tokyo (Sailor Moon). Both worlds are ruled by monarchies, but are very progressive and are steps ahead of present day societies, as both magic and technology are harmoniously combined and utilized on a daily basis.
6. New Horizons
Other than Magical Girl, the world of Wondaria also takes cues from other genres, to add a layer of variety and freshness to the world. Inspirations include Boku no Hero Academia, Pokémon, Sonic The Hedgehog, several Studio Ghibli movies and several modern Isekai series (although with 0% Horny On Main and way much less eurocentric).
7. All Of The World's Gems Are Mine To Keep!
Wondaria's brand of magic, the Assigned Gemstones, were not only inspired by series like Happiness Charge PreCure and DC Comics' Green Lantern (as well as the other Lantern Corps), but they also exist to spite Steven Universe and Land Of The Lustrous, and their Shock Value-plagued narratives in a more subtle way.
8. Bewitched
On its earliest drafts, Wondaria was supposed to strictly follow witchcraft thematics, instead of being random and eclectic as it is today. Magis were supposed to be simply called Witches, and their original goal was to clean their tarnished reputation caused by the Incubators' evil lies. But it was quickly changed because I didn't wanted to associate myself to the likes of that wicked old hag JK Rowling and her parasitic abominations.
9. Self-care Is Important! Even Magical Heroes Need It, Too!
Even though Magis are said to actively participate in sociopolitical issues (fighting against discrimination, helping refugees escape safely etc...), the original idea behind my canon is to tackle on the importance of mental health awareness, by making therapy and psychiatry universally free of charge in Wondaria. Because even the strongest heroes need saving sometimes.
10. Equivalent Exchange
In its whole entirety, Wondaria was born out of a single reocurring thought in my mind: "If there are worlds with corrupt governments and collapsing societies, then there CERTAINLY must be other worlds with fair governments and flourishing societies, too! It's only fair!"

FEATURE: 21 Great Anime You Should Absolutely Watch In 2021
Tumblr media
Happy Anime Day! With every season bringing a plethora of new series, there are now countless shows and movies, both new and old, to watch. Whether it's adventure, comedy, romance, or drama you're looking for, here are 21 anime series you should add to your watchlist in 2021.
Tumblr media
      1. My Hero Academia Season 5
When it comes to the next chapter of My Hero Academia, 2021 couldn't come fast enough. Season 4 showed audiences just how high the stakes really are and how dangerous the enemies can be. Season 5, which recently premiered in March, will not only deliver high-level action, but we'll also get more time with the great slate of heroes and villains showcased last season.
youtube
      2. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train
After hearing the news of Mugen Train dominating the box office, the time has come for North American audiences to experience this highly anticipated film. Mugen Train will be available for digital release this summer and will help fill the void fans of the series have been feeling since the season ended. And we can always revisit Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba in the meantime.
youtube
      3. The Devil Is A Part-Timer
The Devil Is A Part-Timer! offers lots of comedy with all the appeal of your traditional fantasy series, but it takes place in the modern world. Demon Lord Satan gets transported to Tokyo, and while his original goal was to take over his homeland of Ente Isla, Satan finds a better path to world domination ... climbing the ranks at the local MgRonalds! It's fun, it's wacky, and it's one of those series we never thought would get a second season, until now.
youtube
      4. Given The Movie
Talk about a bag of mixed emotions. Like the series, you'll feel proud and happy one minute, and then a pile of mush the next. Given The Movie provides a touching viewing experience following these fractured characters as they navigate their personal feelings, as well as expressing their innermost emotions through music.
Tumblr media
        5. Hunter X Hunter
2021 marks the 10-year anniversary of Hunter X Hunter. Whether you've never seen this series or you've re-watched it hundreds of times, come celebrate this epic title's milestone!
youtube
      6. MEGALOBOX 2: NOMAD
MEGALOBOX brought all the charm of a '90s anime, but with the story of a futuristic society that takes boxing to a whole other level. Gearless Joe made a name for himself in Season 1, and although things have changed and gotten complicated, he's "not dead yet." For Joe, the fire still burns within him, and he seeks to fight once more.
youtube
      7. Osamake: The Romcom Where The Childhood Friend Won't Lose!
Finally, a series where the childhood friend captures the heart of the MC ... I hope? It is a harem after all! Osamake: The Romcom Where The Childhood Friend Won't Lose! has a whole lot of comedy, a whole lot of shenanigans, and a noticeable amount of ... revenge. It looks like an epic competition is about to get underway!
youtube
        8. Chihayafuru
If you're experiencing Haikyu!! withdrawals, then Chihayafuru may be the next best sports anime for you! Now don't be fooled. Although Chihayafuru is all about Karuta, a Japanese card game, it still delivers the same level of development and high-stakes settings as other sports anime. This may be one of those series you always saw around but never watched but if there was ever a time to binge, it's now!
youtube
      9. Tokyo Revengers
With the manga receiving much praise, probably one of the most anticipated anime adaptations for 2021 is Tokyo Revengers. Motivated by tragedy, Takemichi Hanagaki finds himself in the past, climbing the ranks of the Tokyo Manji Gang in order to change destiny. He may not appear the toughest, but he's determined to get through the intense situations he finds himself in.
youtube
      10. To Your Eternity
Knowing this is a story from Yoshitoki Oima, creator of A Silent Voice, To Your Eternity, will surely be an adventure that tugs on your heartstrings. Audiences will witness an intimate journey of life and death revolving around an emotionless orb with no identity but can take the shape of those around it. There will be elements of time, drama, emotion, plus Hikaru Utada performs the theme? ... Sold! Want to know more? Check out the full manga catalog here.
youtube
      11. Shaman King
A Shaman King reboot was the best present fans of the original series could've gotten as the title just marked its 20th year since the show premiered back in 2001. Fans will be transported back to their childhood, all the while looking forward to a new story that reflects the manga. The series recently aired in April in Japan, and fans in North America can expect to watch the series sometime later this year.
youtube
        12. Horimiya
If you've been searching for a romance anime unlike any other, then you should watch Horimiya if you haven't already. This series takes everything you know about anime romance tropes, and delivers a series of fresh new twists, making for a warm and cozy viewing experience.
Tumblr media
    13. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
If in between all the action and comedy you need a good slice of life series about friendship, Anohana is the series for you! The original series aired 10 years ago, but sometimes a trip down memory lane is exactly what you need. Plus a new visual and news of an upcoming project will surely get you pumped to hit play.
youtube
      14. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2
Thinking he'd be the hero in this new fantasy world, Naofumi Iwatani ended up being hated, shunned, and stigmatized at the beginning of The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1. But as he journeyed on, he developed genuine relationships, gained valuable trust, credibility, and gratitude from others. Season 2, airing in October, is ready to continue with Naofumi's journey and progression.
youtube
        15. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S
Miss Kobayashi Dragon Maid has it all! This series draws you in with its cute appearance, but it surprises you with its mature moments and shocks you with some unexpected sizzle. Plus it has dragons, maids, and sweet raps! Be sure to check out the second season's adventures this July.
Tumblr media
    16. One Piece
If you haven't already committed to the legendary behemoth One Piece, now may be a good time to start. The anime is set to hit its 1,000th episode this year, and while diving into a series that's so far along can seem intimidating, if you've been spending a lot of time binging TV lately, this series could be your next big marathon.
youtube
      17. S8 the Infinity
Take the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games, and mix them together with vibrant, aesthetically pleasing animation and cool action scenes and you have S8 the Infinity. Sports anime has been really expanding its catalog lately, and this series is an entertaining addition to the genre.
Tumblr media
  Image via Hulu
  18. The Wallflower
A little bit of nostalgia is nice to mix into your anime watchlist. If you're a fan of Ouran High School Host Club, then you'll love The Wallflower! It's got some handsome boys, a cute and quirky girl with a fascination for all things dark and scary, and all the ridiculous antics of a harem!
youtube
      19. Death Parade
Death Parade has stayed under the radar, but it at least deserves to be on YOUR radar. A story about the afterlife where a bar represents limbo and its bartender decides the fate of the souls in front of him whether they experience reincarnation, or disappear into the void by playing a game. This is a psychological, thought-provoking drama with some mystery, as we don't know the true nature of the people in the bar, or what led them to where they are. Those secrets will eventually be revealed as the game plays on.
Tumblr media
    20. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Like Hunter X Hunter, this year also marks the 10-year anniversary of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Madoka was and to this day still is a defining series that was a real game-changer for the magical girl genre, showing just how much danger magical girls face. It's a must-watch if you haven't already, so make a contract with yourself to watch or re-watch this series sometime in 2021.
youtube
    21. How To Keep A Mummy
How To Keep A Mummy is a heartwarming episodic series to watch when you want to have a feel-good time! Friends and classmates spend time together with their mythical creature companions: A precious, tiny mummy who anytime he holds anything will make your heart melt, a somewhat hot-headed but caring oni, a clever dragon, and a fluffy baku. After catching up on everything on your watch list, have fun with this series to round out 2021.
