Summary: Princess Clarke of Arkadia is kidnapped by mercenaries while on a visit to one of the kingdom's cities. Her abductors treat her well enough, but everything becomes more complicated when their client orders them to execute her.
Lexa thought this was just another job. High risk, high pay. But when push comes to shove, will she betray her orders or her heart?

Chapter 7: Pledge
Clarke saw little of the couple of hours it took the convoy to return to Ark. The abrupt end of the stress accumulated over the previous few days left her exhausted and numb. She spent the journey with her head on her father’s lap at the back of the armored vehicle, softly crying as his hand stroked her hair.
She had to have fallen asleep at some point because she woke up without having seen anything of Ark or the high fence surrounding the palace. The car came to a stop before marble stairs leading to a gold-ornamented wooden door tall enough for a giant to enter without tilting their head. An impressive view often portrayed on postcards and newspapers, but as familiar to her as her reflection in the glass.
Home, she thought, incapable of stopping the nervous laugh from escaping her lips. Despite ridiculous odds, she had survived. She was home.
Journalists, likely alerted by the troop entering Ark in the middle of the night, had gathered before the gate to glimpse what was happening. Clarke felt a wave of gratitude wash over her when guards protectively lined up on the other side of the car to hide her and the king from their lenses. Naturally, the Palace would soon have to let the nation know their princess had returned safe and sound. But she wasn’t ready to face the barrage of questions sure to be aimed at her. She needed a few more hours, at least, to catch her breath and prepare herself.

Chapter 5: Reprieve
Clarke woke at the sound of whispers and doors squeaking. She stretched her back and groaned when a kink manifested itself in her neck. As comfortable as the sofa looked, it wasn’t large or long enough to rival her king-sized bed and medium-firm mattress. A blanket was spread over her frame when she distinctly didn’t remember grabbing one during the night, and she smiled at the sweet attention.
Her stomach growling loudly reminded her she hadn’t eaten since breakfast the day before. With cheeks pink from embarrassment, she stood up and headed for the kitchen.
She found Girl there, with her back pressed against the kitchen counter, and the other female mercenary Clarke had dubbed Panther in her mind for the way she quietly stared at her.
“Morning,” Girl greeted her. “How are you?”
“Hello. I am well, thank you. I was hoping to prepare something for breakfast. Did you find any food?”
As she was looking at their surroundings, Clarke almost missed Girl signing what she had said to Panther. That explained the silent treatment, and she felt bad for not noticing earlier that the woman was deaf or hard of hearing.
Panther signed something in response that had Girl chuckle. Upon Clarke’s interrogative look, she translated. “Do you know how to cook?”
“Well…” No, she didn’t. Cliché as it was, Clarke had never boiled an egg in her life. While she had a fair understanding of how it went in theory, it would be best for everyone if she weren’t left unsupervised in the kitchen.
“Heda’s in the pantry. You should have a look at what’s available there first, and then I’ll help you prepare something.”
With a grateful nod, Clarke moved toward the door Girl had pointed at, trying not to imagine what the two women thought of her. That she was a spoiled brat, most likely, and the notion left a bitter aftertaste in her mouth. If she made it back to the palace in one piece, she would remedy the situation, she promised herself. No twenty-six-year-old, regardless of gender and social status, should be so useless in the kitchen.
As mentioned, she found Green Eyes in the pantry rummaging through the mostly empty shelves and cupboards with a frown.

*minor spoilers for Royal Guard!AU*
-wanted to make something a little indulgent with the gays-
You jeeringly order your new guards to kiss your hand every morning and every night. To get back at you, they take that order very seriously.
And of course they don't limit the gesture to just you~
(and friendly reminder Sun and Moon are NOT brothers in this AU)
