TW; mycophobia
This theory has been rotting in my brain for about a year now, and I need to put it out somewhere.
So if you're familiar with Cordyceps, a type of fungus that parasitizes insects by controlling their minds, well, what I'll talk about is gonna be pretty close to this concept, so let's get down to it.
My idea is that the Smiling God is a cosmic parasite that spreads through its light just like fungi with their spores. In order to feed and propagate further, the parasite will need to find a host with a vulnerable enough mind to comfortably settle in, and in our case, it's Kevin.
The parasite may not be influential enough in small manifestations or may not fully develop in the brain of a resistant victim.
But once the parasite has fully settled, it uses its ability to control the victim's mind, causing them to feel fear and devotion towards the parasite.
One of the reasons why getting the parasite out would be a very hard task is the fact that the infected victim is practically drugged up by the spores and may feel delirious and ecstatic. After a prolonged period of time, the host can become a direct source of infection and, through close contact with other people, spread the spores and drug more victims into a state of ecstasy. The mind-controlled host convinces them to become a way of distribution or food for the parasite, which victims (in this state of mind) see as something positive and will do willingly
The parasite may have several different hosts, including animals and humans.
Despite the fact that the parasite can develop in several different hosts, it shares one consciousness to some extent (depends on the difference in cognitive development of said hosts).
and when members of the Joyos congregation mention Kevin being the one who brought the knowledge of the Smiling God to the town, in the context of this theory, I like to think of them actually referring to Kevin being infected the most severely and for the longest time !!
so yeah :)
keep in mind that i haven't read It Devours yet !! so all of this is just my silly little thoughts.

WTNV 234 THOUGHTS
(to preface @asydicsydney made a post on this previously so check that out!)
// SPOILERS FOR WTNV 234 \\
okay so i definitely think that the boy is kevin, not a de-aged version but kevin as a child.
this may be far fetched but i caught a couple things while listening and had to make note... here are my weird and wacky thoughts
"I remember a sky so full of stars that it looked like a blank sheet of paper." -connecting to one of the pateron episodes(listener questions 9), kevin (when asked about what he remembers before strex) he mentions a thousand stars... which could also allude to a full sky
"My first breath was minutes ago." -linking to another patreon bonus episode (listener questions 9), kevin said that he remembers every single second of his own birth- which realistically this could make sense if the boy was kevin... the boy seems to be able to form thoughts and have the ability to collect memories (in the present) after having being just born
"His teeth look meticulously cared for." -again just the teeth analogies scream kevin (that's all i got for this one folks)
"I remember a warmth that did not comfort. I remember joy that wrenched the soul." (connection to the smiling god?) -yeah this one really made me think of the smiling god because the light that the smiling god emanates has been describes as "warm" those that worship the smiling god pray to its "great warmth". we kinda know kevin's backstory with the smiling god but i feel like it is a possibility that kevin was afraid of the smiling god growing up hence the use of words like "did not comfort" and "wretched". and the fact that the sentence was "joy that wretched the soul" what correlates with joy? the smiling god- and kevin.
basically the whole speaking avoidance with the boys mom- idk i just thought it was weird and raised an alarm -i just thought it was odd that the boy just really did not want to talk about his mom and it got me thinking that we don't know much about either doubles childhood so this one is kinda a stretch but i feel like there is something to connect both cecil and kevin's mothers together, i just haven't found it
also another note- cecil isn't able to recognize the boy as kevin because a) its kevin as a little kid b) cecil doesn't even know what he really looks like c) this is kevin as a kid... cecil hasn't seen or met kevin face to face before strex- he would have no clue what he looks like or even be expecting it to be kevin
in conclusion... i really got a whole bunch of kevin vibes on the down low from this episode and am really excited to see where we go from here

something something Carlos spent ten years hearing about Kevin’s belief in the Smiling God, built a friendship, and after Kevin fell in love with him left by note; left knowing Desert Bluffs would never be home, left after ten years questioning where he belonged while working with a man that looked exactly like the love of his life but wasn’t actually; and then when he was confronted with the God of the otherworld where he was trapped, face-to-face with the symbol of Kevin’s belief, he killed the Smiling God.

I know it’s more than likely that Harrison Kip has his own random religious group but the word congregation used repeatedly only made me think of the joyous congregation… wouldn’t that be a trip?

Every god in Welcome to Night Vale is malevolent in some way or another (even accidentally, in Huntokar's case), but the Smiling God is truly the worst of them. His followers can never be free, Kasper Rhodes had his brain put into a robot body unable to smile, and as he finally felt peaceful, "the smile" appeared before him. And I don't even have to mention Triptych, one of the saddest episodes in the entire podcast, showing how truly sorrowful Kevin's life was, is, and will be.
